Guerilla Wildflower Plot Year 1

An experiment in an old abandoned plot near the CBC building was undertook (undertaken?) to restore a site entirely devoid of native forbs to one that IS entirely native forbs in 2024. This project will be continuing into 2025. Near the parking lot on the North end of the lot, facing 16th avenue, a large quantity of soil was piled up and flatted somewhat, and this soil has been colonized by lamb's quarters, red root amaranth, and to a lesser extent- prostrate knotweed, and tumbleweed mustard.

The extreme ecological poverty of the site made me eager to intervene, as it could only improve from here.

The first step was sowing. Around February 2024, I brought seeds of the showy milkweed, northern bedstraw, blanketflower, wild blue flax, coneflower, purple asters, white aster, alpine pussytoes, and a heap of curlycup gumweed. I marked these with popsicle sticks.

The second step was supposed to be reaping. In April or May, a quantity of amaranth sprouts that had to be seen to be believed erupted on the site. Within 2 weeks, the lamb's quarters had reached nearly 20 cm in height. I started frantically weeding to see if ANYTHING had sprouted. I finally found something that looked to be in Asteraceae- to confirm my suspicions, I used "Picture This," and the tiny rosette was identified to be Grindelia squarrosa- the curly cupped gumweed.

As a tiny seedling distantly related to dandelion and thistle, it really doesn't look like much. It won't even bloom in its first year.

I remembered reading that curlycup gumweed is a species that dominates dryer rangeland when the site is overgrazed. It was then that I realized I could be the grazer. I manically pulled thousands of lamb's quarters and realized that there were several dozen gumweed seedlings eking out a living beneath the oppressive canopy of one of the fastest growing weeds in the county.

By September, many more plants started to show themselves. Below, you'll see these hairy lobed leaves - these are blanketflower - the deeply lobed leaves in the top right are prairie coneflower. The blue-green whorled stems are wild blue flax. The large rosettes are of the curly cupped gumweed. Many of these plants have not flowered on their first year, but establishment of seedlings has been decent, and it bodes well for next year.

The site doesn't look like much without knowing what these plants are. It DOES look like much up close.

Below- blanketflower (hairy lobed leaves) gumweed (spatulate leaves, center) flax (blue-green, whorled stems) and coneflower (top left). I think the pointed toothed leaves on the plant in the top center might be a goldenrod (Solidago) but I'm not sure.

Below: A single hairy false golden aster (Heterotheca villosa) was in bloom. I would count that as a success.

I noticed that with the exception of this single golden aster, the species that are established are almost entirely those without tufted achenes (such as the Solidago and the Symphyotrichum species) because the seeds didn't blow away. This winter I seeded a lot more, this time including broom snakeweed. I tried to get fluffier seeds embedded in either mud or snow, but I'm sure a lot of these seeds will blow away or be eaten by mice.

I barely watered this plot and all that I really did was seed and weed. I hope some of these plants will get a foothold and persist in the relatively unmanaged area along the walking path north of Parkdale.

Jarvis tapes on Jason’s life (or at least what the footage tells you) 🎞️

Jason Grayson Underwood was born at twelve-oh-one a.m., April 20th, 1922

at Children's Hospital, San Francisco,

the second child of Fran and Jonathan Underwood. His sister Dolores Marie Underwood only be 5 years old.

On the 16th of June in 1929, Mr & Mrs. Underwood would divorce taking both children their separate ways.

August 30th 1943, Howard Stark and his sister Elizabeth Stark would come into the picture, change his life forever.

Meeting both of them during the war, alongside Agent Margaret ‘Peggy’ Carter. Who would later on become his sister in more ways than one.

Eighty-seven days later Jason met James Bucky Barnes and The Howling Commanders, crossing paths on the battle field with Captain America.

After the war ended, Jason Underwood went on to work for the SSR. He had the opportunity to work selling watches in Texas and New York, but went on to become an associate of the organization.

Which is where he met Agent Jack Thompson, Daniel Sousa and plenty of others.

However he had another job underneath his belt as him, Edwin Jarvis and Agent Carter were given a job to locate Howard Stark’s stolen items while he hide away.

The whole time, half of the country was after him.

That’s when he would met his sister once again, Dottie Underwood, A Black Widow. As she worked with an scientist and Soviet spies to frame Stark’s items as dangerous as they seemed.

It was complicated.

He was not pleased and made sure his sister was behind bar for her crimes, with working for the wrong side. But she did not care, she never did.

He shot the scientist and spies with the help of the SSR who realized who was responsible for all of this.

They freed Howard and his sister from all charges. Jack Thompson became Chief Executive Officer in New York City.

But they all know Peggy Carter deserves all the credit for the job.

Daniel Sosua was promoted to Chief in California.

In 1947 New York City, Chief Jack Thompson and Agent Peggy Carter of the Strategic Scientific Reserve (SSR) apprehend Soviet spy Dottie Underwood.

Newly appointed Chief Daniel Sousa of the Los Angeles SSR office meets with Detective Andrew Henry, who has discovered a woman's body in a frozen lake during a heat wave.

That’s when Jason Underwood was called from his newly acquired home in Los Angeles for the job, requesting Agent Carter to sign onto the job.

Howard and his Elizabeth Stark were living in Los Angeles as well, making films and creating new inventions for their company.

Ten weeks after filming a new movie Howard was creating and working on the case, Jason was driving north one night to his shared studio beach cottage when something highly unusual occurred, something almost magical...

Snow fell in Los Angeles, California. Heavy winds and hail stormed all into one. The car swing over the slippery slope of the bridge as he drove onto the main water, as he tried to pull up.

But failed to get the brakes to work.

The immersion in the frigid water caused Jason's body to go into an anoxic reflex, instantly stopping his breathing and slowing his heartbeat.

Within 2 minutes, Jason Underwood's core temperature had dropped to 87 degrees...

his heart stopped beating.

He was silent underneath the table of water for 7 minutes.

At 11: 55 a bolt of lightning struck the vehicle discharging half a billion volts of electricity and producing 60,000 amperes of current.

Its effect was threefold.

First, the charge defibrillated Jason Undwood's heart.

Second,

He was jolted out of his anoxic state causing him to draw his first breath in 3 minutes.

Third, based on Von Lehman's principle of electron compression in deoxyribonucleic acid, which will be discovered in the year two thousand thirty-five, Jason Underwood will henceforth be immune to the ravages of time...

he will never age another day.

Of course, he didn’t know that would be a harsh yet effective condition until later.

Wrapped in a cold sweat, dizziness and fatigue were the consequences of the accident.

He was in bed for a few days at the house or made to be sat down, as a nurse took his temperature while he helped study the case.

A field of zero matter and Whitney Frost, 2 times Oscar nominee who was a scientist at heart, was behind it. They hoped it wouldn’t be the rest of mission and the caseload conditions that harmed them.

But faith had other plans.

Peggy took the rest, after her painful defeat of almost being impaled by the help,to call Jason’s sister Dottie for undercover work.

It wasn’t the best thing, but worked like a charm. Dottie left getting her cut of the money and ran.

Soon enough, Jason, Peggy and others were up for the challenge to help finish the race in their job. It was a long and difficult process for the entire team but they made it work.

Zero matter was seemingly gone. Whitney Frost was put in prison.

Weeks went by.

He studied long and hard for weeks, working with Howard, Peggy, Dr. Wilkie Jones and Ana Jarvis on cases. Figure out the answer to the questions they had from their previous research on the mission.

And the effects left behind.

Jason found nothing on his plate of studies onto what happened to him, as the years went by he noticed his friends slowly turning around with age, as he stayed the same.

It wasn’t zero matter or the previous time on trips that harmed him.

It was something else.

Some would see it differently, thinking it as a blessing that he stopped aging, others might’ve called it a curse.

It just depends on who you were talking to.

For Jason, he made the blonde sick to his stomach and want to hide behind closed doors.

As the years passed, Jason credited her unchanging appearance to a combination of a healthy diet, exercise, heredity, and good luck.

He would travel around, change his name and mind. Leave for a couple of weeks every new decade.

It was all to prevent confusion, controversy and added pressure from anyone who might’ve wanted to sent him to a lab to be tested for his status. 

To protect himself and his loved ones…

a season of redemption, celebration, and forward motion

Dear Reader, it is with the greatest of joys that I return to the chronicle of Mr. Eric Bozoian—gentleman of noble pursuits, steadfast love, and increasingly formidable project management skills. The span since our last account, dated the seventh of October in the year twenty and twenty-four, has borne witness to no small number of life-altering developments, the most profound of which we must proclaim first, lest excitement overtake the pen—Eric Bozoian has wed the indomitable and ever-gracious Faren McDonald! 💍💚

But let us proceed in the proper chronology, as Mr. Bozoian would have it.

November was the month wherein Eric and Faren took up the mantle of wedding planning themselves, eschewing the modern-day indulgence of a wedding planner (a species whose rates often exceed the reach of reason). The venue was chosen with romantic precision: Indian Head Resort in New Hampshire, the very site of one of their earliest dates. 🏞️ A tour of the premises confirmed its suitability, as did a visit to the nearby Elks Lodge, which would become the site of a most memorable rehearsal dinner, featuring a spread of quality pizzas and a dedicated bartender—surely the stuff of modern romance. 🍕🍸

Having encountered cake tastings of such horror—one even containing mold 😱—Eric and Faren resolved in November to bake their own wedding cake. Their efforts would be rewarded manyfold, but more on that anon.

In December, the season brought with it its usual joys—snow-draped scenery, holiday magic, and the exchange of gifts. Among them, Eric presented Faren with matching jewelry, a sparkling addition to her engagement ring, and a token of love’s continuity. 🎁❄️

January was a month of action: hikes in the biting cold (so frigid that the sweat on Eric’s beard did freeze! ❄️🧔), 

February brought with it the final preparations—cake decorating, venue detailing, and the arrival of Eric’s custom wedding band. Having suffered through two lackluster bands in his prior marriage—one brittle and poor in spirit, the other sturdy yet soulless—Eric found himself now the proud owner of a golden ring, wrapped in a vine of emerald and diamond leaves, a perfect mirror to Faren’s own ring and a reflection of his truest self. 🌿💚💎

And then—March 15th. The Wedding Day.

Dear reader, allow us to indulge in a moment of literary reverence: it was perfect. From the birch-themed décor to the champagne in their suite, the American buttercream and cannoli cream cake they had lovingly crafted, the glow of the candlelit birch centerpieces (fashioned by Faren’s family), the behaviour of guests (appropriate, respectful, and joyous!), and the musical stylings of an excellent DJ—it all came together through the tireless planning of Eric and Faren, and in stark contrast to the chaos of Eric’s first wedding. 💒🌲✨

Even the modest indulgence in drink did not disturb the balance—Eric enjoyed himself, stayed grounded, and was surrounded by loved ones who respected his journey. It was, by all accounts, a day of joy unmarred.

The honeymoon? A revelation. 🌊🛳️

Eric and Faren set sail on a 10-day Virgin Voyages adults-only cruise through the Caribbean. From Puerto Rico to Barbados, from St. Kitts to St. Vincent, they explored eight stunning islands, feasted on gourmet meals, basked in the sun, and lounged in splendid comfort. Eric, long a veteran of all-inclusives in Mexico, now finds himself a convert to the world of cruising—and rightly so. The service, the destinations, the experience—it was all, in a word, sublime.

Yet even in the midst of personal triumph, the shadow of professional uncertainty looms. Eric remains employed by the federal government, but the current administration’s restructuring efforts have thrown many agencies into disarray. Offered an early buyout (pay through September for a May departure), Eric declined—choosing instead to weather the storm and hold out for his full pension, now just five years away. 🏛️⚖️

Whispers of relocation—to Kansas, Montana, or North Carolina—have added uncertainty. Still, Eric and Faren remain resolute: should the move come, they shall treat it as an adventure, buy a home wherever the wind may carry them, and begin the next chapter of their life together—possibly with children not far behind. 🏠👶

In all, dear reader, the past half year has been a season of transformation for Mr. Bozoian—a season of redemption, celebration, and forward motion. There are echoes of the past, yes, and memories that haunt. But with Faren at his side, his hands in the earth (or the HTML), and his feet steady on the trail, Eric walks boldly into the future. ✨

What is the perfect time to go in Osaka?

Osaka has a fairly mild climate and the seasons are quite distinct. Temperatures range from about 6°C in the winter to close to 30°C in the summer. Snow is rare. Late June to late July is the rainy season, with the typhoon season following soon after.

Given that there are many famous cherry-blossom viewing sites in town and in nearby Kyoto, spring (late March to mid-April) is an excellent time to visit, as is late November to early December for the autumn leaves.

Osaka hosts a grand sumo tournament in mid-March, and late July sees the Tenjin Matsuri Festival – with hundreds of elaborately decked-out boats plying the Okawa River. The third weekend in September is the memorable float-pulling ceremony of Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri.

Train The Nankai Express Rapit takes around 35 minutes to get to Namba Station and costs JPY ¥1450. Nankai Airport Express trains take about 10 minutes longer and cost JPY ¥920.

The JR Haruka Kansai-Airport Express departs twice an hour and takes around 30 minutes to get to Tennoji Station; it costs JPY ¥1710. More frequent JR Kansai Airport rapid trains take 50 minutes and cost JPY ¥1060.

Trains leave from Kansai Airport Station in Terminal 1; you can get a free shuttle bus there from Terminal 2.

Buses KATE buses to destinations around Osaka and throughout the Kansai region depart from Terminals 1 and 2. The trip to Osaka Station takes around 50 minutes and costs JPY ¥1600.

Come one, come all for Providence Peak’s Annual Spring Extravaganza! Browse the local shop windows as they’ve worked hard to display the most creative blooming displays to welcome the new season in and while you’re doing so, be sure you don’t miss out on the sales and special treats being offered during this week! If that isn’t enough to keep busy as Spring hustle and bustles its way into the doors of the city, there will be a mountain of daily activities offered alongside a truly fantastical downtown festival. As the winter snow finally melts away from the city, allow yourself to relax and welcome spring and all it has to offer.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

All Week (April 12th - April 23rd) — The downtown extravaganza will begin on Saturday and run all week long. This portion of the event fills the downtown square area of Providence Peak with vendors selling local goods and foods, stalls offering free merch, activities for the children, and even a petting zoo! You can find the full list of vendors HERE.

Wednesday to Friday (April 12th - April 14th) — Collect a voting sheet from the booth located near Town Hall and stroll through the local shops in each neighborhood, marking off your vote for several categories judging the floral displays in their windows. While near the shops, be sure to stop in at participating shops for a small spring freebie! When you’re finished, return the voting sheet to the booth near Town Hall and spend the rest of your day meandering through the festival vendors in the square.(any location on the locations page is fair game, please contact muns regarding character-owned businesses)

Saturday (April 15th) — Come one, come all to the annual reopening of Stomias Point Amusement Park where admission is always free and on this day only, so are the rides! Every two hours, Stomias Point will be offering free ride wristbands courteous of Nathan Crane of the Crane Foundation. Ride wristbands are good for two hours and each person can only receive one wristband. There is limited availability, so be sure to snag yours up to experience the thrills of Stomias Point Amusement Park’s opening day!

Sunday (April 16th) — Give your week a bright start by joining the Humming Bee at the Lind Dairy Farm for sunrise goat yoga and refreshments! Main Squeeze will have a booth set up nearby offering samples of their farm-fresh smoothies or a full sized drink for an additional cost to give you an energy boost to begin your session and Lind Dairy Farm will have a selection of milks, cheeses, soaps (not edible), and other craft items created by the farm animals you see there for sale. After the session, feel free to take a tour of the farm with Providence Peak’s very own locals, RJ and Penny Lind.

Monday (April 17th) — Hopefully you’re not too tired from the busy weekend, because as the festival carries on downtown, Take It Outdoors is hosting a boat and kayak race across Summit Lake. Feel free to bring your own equipment or they’ll have more than enough for participants to rent during the event. And what’s the prize for crawling out of bed and standing outside under the sun all day only to row across the largest lake in Providence Peak? Well, two brand new personalized kayaks, complete with paddles and life vests, of course!

Tuesday (April 18th) — Still coming down from the adrenaline of the ever-intense kayak race? How about more questionable life choices? A Touch of Ink will be offering a spring-themed flash tattoo sale for the entire day; $50 for anything smaller than your palm and $80 for anything between palm and full hand sized. As for what to get? Go wild! The flash sheet contains anything from typical florals to rabbits and hot air balloons. If it gives spring vibes, it’s on there!

Wednesday (April 19th) —  Find your way to Mayor Harris’ stand in the midst of the festival for a spring raffle. Each person has the opportunity to purchase 5 raffle tickets and are about to bet them on a chance to win some of this seasons grand prizes. Then, join Keola and Mya for a dance party in the center of the festival where they’ll be playing all of the current hits and rocking along to each one with the citizens of Providence Peak.

Thursday (April 20th) — Clear your mid-day schedules and join Holy Spirits for a Bridgerton-esque high tea (sorry, kids, this event is not family friendly!). Dress up in your most elegant attire and dance the afternoon away to violin covers of your favorite songs while enjoying a selection of adult-friendly pastries and refreshments courtesy of Thea Harris.

Friday to Saturday (April 21st - April 22nd) —  As the downtown festival wraps up, join the city at Frederick’s Farm in Bighorn Hills where everyone will be treated to fresh popped popcorn, apricots picked that day, and lemonade while waiting for their turn to fly in one of dozen hot air balloons sponsored by Providence Peak University.

Dating Disney: Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and the Beast features my favorite love story and my favorite Disney Princess, so it holds a very special spot in my heart. So, it’s worth looking into the film to decide when the Movie is supposed to be set.

During the opening musical number “Belle”, Belle is telling the Baker about the book she’s been reading. She’s clearly describing Jack and the Beanstalk, the earliest version being the tale of “Jack Spriggins and the Enchanted Bean” in 1734. But she also deliberately mentions an ogre, not a giant. Near as I could find, the only version with an ogre was written by Joseph Jacobs in 1890, making Belle nearly contemporary to modernity. Belle’s excitement over the book is likely a sign that this is a new story.

During the same musical number, we see a sign depicting a tobacco pipe, but unlike with the Calabash pipe from the Little Mermaid movie. I could place it to possibly be a Billiard type, but the exact era of creation escapes me. However, tobacco pipes have been around as long as Tobacco has been introduced to European trade, starting in the 16th century.

The history of colored printing goes as far back as the 16th century, and there are illustrations from the early 1700s with an impressive variety of color that help establish a stronger time period. The book also shows the words Le Prince Charmant or Prince Charming. Prince Charming started being used in 1697 in Charles Perrault’s version of Sleeping Beauty, although there, Prince Charming was not a name. Rather, Perrault stated that the Prince was charmed by her words. The first story to use Prince Charming as a name is the Tale of Pretty Goldilocks. It was written at some point in the 17th Century by Madame d’Aulnoy, but in her version the hero was named Avenant. It wasn’t until 1889 when Andrew Lang retold the story that Avenant was dubbed as Charming. One year later in 1890, Oscar Wilde used the term “Prince Charming” sarcastically in his novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray”, meaning that the term had gotten its more modern meaning by this point in time.

Gaston’s musket is a Blunderbuss, which was invented in the early 1600′s and remained popular through the 18th century before falling out of fashion in the middle of the 19th century. However, considering Belle states that this is a backwards town and Gaston is an old-fashioned, Primeval man, it’s possible he’s using a largely outdated weapon.

While there are no street lamps in the city, we can see in the background lanterns on the sides of buildings, which might allude to the movie taking place before the invention of gas lamps. However, gas lamps were invented in 1809, and if the version of Jack and the Beanstalk is from 1890, then by all accounts the town should have gas lamps. What this amounting evidence is leading me to believe is that the film is directly following the plot of the original fairy tale.

In the story, Beauty’s father is a merchant who loses his fortune due to a storm destroying his cargo. They’re forced to live on a farm until the merchant stumbles upon the Beast’s castle and kick starts the plot. In the opening song, Belle says “every morning’s just the same, since the morning that we came, to this poor, provincial town.” This could mean that she grew up in a much more modern, urban, and progressive town. Possibly even Paris. But that after Maurice suffered severe financial trouble, he was forced to move them to the small, backwards town that was practically living an entire century behind the rest of France, which is why she’s so bored and unimpressed by the little town. It helps explain why she’s so eager to want to get out of this town and see the world. She wants to be part of the modern world again.

Interestingly, I can support this theory with background information. According to some of my research, Belle’s village was based on the little town of Riquewihr, France, which still looks like it did in the 16th century to this day. So the idea that Belle’s little village lacks so many modern elements could be a nod to the architecture of this sleepy French village that has remained largely untouched by the march of time. Hence why it looks more like something out of the 1700s despite the many elements from the 1800s being present.

During the song “Be Our Guest”, Lumiere dances with a match stick. Match sticks were invented in 1805. Assuming the film still takes place in the 1890s, this would be concurrent with the other evidence we’ve seen thus far. Later in the same song, the silverware makes an Eiffel tower, which was constructed in 1889. Since Jack and the Beanstalk was written after that, it still fits within the suspected time frame.

During the climax of the battle, Cogsworth is wearing military garments reflective of Napoleonic styles. Napoleon was coronated in 1804 until 1814, had a brief return to power in 1815, and eventually died in 1821. So this is also congruent to the established time period.

In the Youtube Video “Fashion Expert Fact Checks Belle from Beauty and the Beast’s Costumes” by Glamour, April Calahan, a Fashion Historian from the Fashion Institute of Technology directly noted that Belle’s yellow gown lacks the shape of a proper 18th century dress, and more closely resembles the shape of 19th century dresses, fitting into the evidence that’s been mounting in support of a late 19th century setting.

As a part of his primary costume, Lefou wears a waistcoat and tailcoats, which came into vogue in the 1800s, namely from the 1840s through the 1850s.

But if the film is set in the 1800s, how can the Beast still be a prince after the French Revolution? Well something worth noting is that when he finds out that Belle isn’t coming to dinner, the Beast storms through the halls to her room as Cogsworth calls after him as “Your Eminence” and “Your Grace”. The address of “Your Eminence” is reserved for Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church, and is an ecclesiastical style of address. “Your Grace” is noticeably an English style of address, but it’s being used by Cogsworth who is British, so I can chalk that up to just part of his culture. Although it was used for British monarchs, it fell out of use during the reign of King Henry VIII (1509-1547) and after that, the use of “Your Grace” became used to address archbishops and non-royal Dukes and Duchesses. Now clearly the Beast is not a cardinal or a bishop, especially if he is looking for the love of a woman to make him human, since it’s forbidden for Catholic priests to marry. So clearly that is not what is meant here. But the other answer actually does hold a bit of weight. Beast’s father was in fact, a Duke. So how is the Beast a prince? He’s not. Not entirely. See, there’s more than one kind of Prince in French nobility. There’s a Prince du Sang, or a Prince by Blood. Effectively, the Crown Prince, the sons of ruling monarchs. But the title is also given to lords in charge of a Principality, one of the smallest territorial sizes. Thus, he would not have been important enough to be killed or chased out of power by the townsfolk.

CONCLUSION

The movie is set between the late autumn and early-to-mid winter of 1890. Although the snow is gone when Belle returns to the village, the trees are still bare, signaling that it may just be unseasonably warm, though it could be the very early spring of 1891 between the receding of the snow and the blossoming of new spring foliage. Between the books, clothing, and references made, my conclusion is that Belle is a very modern girl living in a backwards little town stuck in the past, thus why a village in 1890 looks so completely lacking in modern technology despite the era. The Prince is nothing more than a fancy title as the son of a Duke, and he likely has very little if any actual government authority. Essentially, Belle married into wealth, not power, and will never be a proper queen, and I’m not sure if the wife of a lord ruling a principality is a princess or not, but I suspect the answer is no. Making Belle, like Mulan, a Disney Princess who did not marry royalty, was not born royalty, and thus, cannot be called a Disney Princess. She’s definitely a noblewoman, but she’s not royal by any means.
