My Kingdom of Heaven themed fictions (projects and ongoing):
Heaven Can’t Wait (Baldwin x OC) ongoing, arranged marriage, long fic, magical realism, slow burn, fairy tale tropes
REPEL (Baldwin x leperOC) short story, Greek tragedy style
Vide Cor Meum (Baldwin x time travelerOC) Two versions: one as an original story/novel, another reimagined as an Assassin’s Creed fanfic.
Sidi Mansour (Saladin x OC) no info to avoid spoilers, the hooks are best if discovered within the reading of it
He Cries Tears of Silver Modern AU Baldwin x blindOC one-shot. “You cannot change the whole world, but you have already changed mine.” (Maybe I should swap the title for Vide Cor Meum, it would fit better, but it does suit the theme of the time travel one too though) inspired by City of Angels and A Patch of Blue.
Chanterai Por Mon Corage?? Dragon themed story, influenced by HTTYD & HOTD.
(Baldwin x HinduOC) Vampire themed.
A Fallout crossover AU with Baldwin as a ghoul. I began making some drawings of this concept last year, including one based on a tweet, but I did not like the drawings at all (have to fix them)
A one-shot or short story based on my Sultan AU concept of him
Which of these interests you the most? :)
Someday this will be a masterlist, as for now it is still under construction, but I wanted to create an easy access to the current projects, and some info on them
Sorry that there are no x reader fics from me, but I’ve never gone for it since it’s just not my style, though I have read many in general before. Every time I’ve given it a try there’s simply something that doesn’t quite work, like it’s not compatible with the way I write.
If you read any please consider leaving a comment!

The httyd-live action
I know Dean DeBlois will do again a good job as Director, as he did with the original animated trilogy. But I think I will not watch it, maybe I could change my mind but I don’t think so. I just didn’t need it in the first place and I still don’t understand why it’s necessary. It feels for me personally as Universal just wants to milk out such a fantastic franchise, that didn’t need a Remake to begin with. I rather watch JW: Chaos Theory, Flow or the Wild Robot again. I don’t know something about the thought that httyd will get a remake doesn’t stick with me that much. Just something about it feels horribly wrong and I am honestly a bit afraid that the original trilogy will be not so much respected anymore if they do a live action adaptation. Httyd is great as it is and doesn’t need something that is remaking it. The last time I was this angry when they released the nine realms and it was in too many ways disrespectful to the original trilogy. Also another reason why I httyd doesn’t need a live action remake is because httyd has already really good animation, so good, it even looks in some scenes like live action. Hell, httyd is famous for this art style, it was nominated for four Oscars if you include the soundtrack. It’s one of the best trilogies ever made and a Masterpiece of Storytelling.
I know some people like the idea of a series setting within in the second and third movie. I personally also don’t need that either. I kind of like the idea but I think it has to be written and directed by the two guys who produced Chaos Theory and Camp Cretaceous. We have to give them credit, they brought back the Jurassic Park feeling in Jurassic World something Colin Treverrow failed to do, even if it his trilogy is good. And really scored with it in Chaos Theory. I honestly would really enjoy a series that would fit more to the tone of chaos theory, I would even say it would be better than Rtte and Riders/Defenders together.

The Hobbit Masterlist
*I was formerly known as bluemountainsmajesty and plan to rewrite some of my orphaned fics on ao3. For now, I'm linking them below:
Domestic Oneshots Masterlist - A series of oneshots (with the occasional second or third part), focusing on domestic relationships and moments between you and members of the company. [33/33]
Bilbo
Comfort - Bilbo has a relaxing Valentine’s Day planned, starting with a nice bath.
More than Friends - A dear friend is visiting the Shire and Bilbo discovers he may want to be more than friends.
Bofur
Alterations - Bofur means well, but is ill prepared when ordering a dress to surprise Y/N.
Cold Shoulder - Y/N feels ostracized and like she has intruded on dwarrow life, just by living in the mountain to be with Bofur. He finds a way to fix things.
Fixated - "If it’s not too much to ask you for a Bofur smut fic where he has a particular oral fixation so he goes down on the reader a lot? I’d like a gender neutral reader" nsfw
Mr. Sociable - “Are you jealous? Want me all to yourself, do you?"
Subtlety - Bofur wants to make a grand gesture for the woman he loves, and it gets a little Great Gatsby on him.
Dori
A Perfect Fit - “I’d like to ask for a Dori (hobbit) domestic fic please. I just don’t think he gets enough love. Maybe falling for a small dark-haired human running an orphanage? Cause that would channel all those great parenting instincts he has.” request
Dwalin
A Dream Come True - "Were you dreaming about me again?" w/ Dwalin - smut smut smut NSFW
Love Story - Dwalin is a bigger softie than he lets on.
Ode to my One - Dwalin's anniversary gift for his wife is both unexpected and endearing.
Suspenders - At the royal wedding, Dwalin has a wardrobe malfunction. Reader offers to lend a hand. Hints at some NSFW
They Gave Each Other a Pledge - Thorin's youngest sister is in a secret relationship with his best friend. All is well until he catches them together. NSFW
Fili
Confessions - “Fili feat. miscommunication, confessions, nearly missed chances (and more than a little bit of wine)” I want to say this was from a Fizzy writing event.
Dwarven Merchants - Fili x reader role switching au. The Durins are merchants from Erebor while Y/N is a distant relation to human royals. Fili doesn’t feel like he’s good enough for her. [incomplete series]
Enough is Enough - Thorin’s had enough of his nephew and his wife. Borderline NSFW
Lullabies - Learning to live under the mountain brings certain challenges, like getting used to falling asleep in complete and utter silence.
Not an Overreaction - Fili x reader where Dwalin’s daughter gets caught with her boyfriend. NSFW
Sugar Rush - Fili has a sweet surprise for his wife on Valentine’s Day.
Unveiled - Fili brings you to the Shire with him. Thorin thinks he’s being clever, spiting the wizard by asking you to join the company. He doesn’t know what’s coming.
Kili
Golden Years - The company finds out Y/N’s birth year and think she’s much older than she really is. Kili tries to fix the situation, not wanting her to hate him for his poor choice of words.
Meeting Again - Kili and Y/N reunite after their first meeting on the shore. She gets a bit of a surprise.
Nearly too Late - Y/N is about to return to Rohan, Kili panics.
Nori
Favorite Star - Nori is a bit of a dork on Valentine’s Day, but a dork in love.
Supply Run - Nori and Y/N get some supplies for the company, and Nori reaches a realization.
Ori
Anonymous - These letters just keep coming, it’s time to find out who the secret admirer is.
Into the Woods - “Reader from our world figures out how to survive for months in the wild. Encounters Ori and helps him, in turn asks Ori if you would come home with him. Maybe showing some of Dori’s and Nori’s influence in Ori’s actions towards you.” requested
Thorin
For the Dancing and the Dreaming - Thorin proposing to the reader by singing the “For the Dancing and the Dreaming” from HTTYD. With the reader joining him as a duet - request
Light of Day - Winters in Erebor really take a toll on their human queen. Thorin has an idea on how to fix that.
Skyless Stars - I got inspired by a gifset of glowworms from Waitomo Caves in New Zealand -> I like to think there are caves deep in Erebor like this and lovers take strolls there. Maybe there’s a pool and they go for dips in this little hideaway- away from the others for a moment of peace and privacy, contemplation… or secret kisses with Thorin.
Take a Break - Thorin and his Queen were invited to Rivendell to speak with Lord Elrond. She sees it as a vacation and tries to get her husband to see it the same way.
Unwind - My first smutfic: Thorin’s wife has been getting stressed with her duties lately, he tries to help her relax. NSFW
Valentine’s Festival - Thorin organizes an entire festival for the person he loves.
Wounded Pride - Thorin’s one is hurt, his nephews are to blame, the wizard is gone, and apparently, he had been right about their campsite
#hobbit masterlist#the hobbit x reader#reposting my hobbit fics so I can put a link to this post in my main masterlist bc it is dominating it#...and i kind of want to write for some of my other fandoms more

Hey!!! I’ve gone through your entire list of posts and loved it. There’s a lot of psychoanalysis which makes the work a fun read.
Though I’m curious, what is your biggest inspiration or take-a-way from Hiccup? Do you have any other HTTYD character that equally inspires you. What about the franchise that speaks to you the most?
Sorry if the questions are loaded, but I’m curious, you dissect and approach the franchise in a detailed, humanistic way, I wonder if that’s kind of how you also view the universe.
HELLO DEAR!!! Sometimes I wish you guys weren’t anonymous so that I can find you and thank you for filling up my Inbox with such amazing words of encouragement.
To hear that anyone has just read this blog and enjoyed it really makes my day. I pour my heart into my writing and I just want to say I love answering these questions and I am sorry I took over a year to reply. Before I get to why lemme answer you first.
My biggest inspiration and take-away from Hiccup is:-

He is different
I grew up with Hiccup. When the first movie was released I was the same age he was and going through my own season of not fitting in and awkwardness. I wanted so much to be noticed and recognised. Physically I was also very different. I didn’t fit in anyone’s mould.
Peers are precious about certain things and kids with many friends usually meet their criteria - but I couldn’t. Not even close.
I know how it feels like to be alone and misunderstood, even by my own parents.
but he is always kind…
Hiccup doesn’t subscribe to revenge, at least not around his immediate peers like Snotlout who sometimes, I really do feel he deserves it. He believes that there’s always something, to understand, to fix or to improve. That industriousness actually makes him the perfect leader to propel his people forward into the future. In a world where everyone focuses on what’s on the outside, he hyper fixates on what’s on the inside and if we really start listening to why people say what they said instead of just taking their words literally you hear so much more.
he stewards his gifts well.
He can invent. He’s been inventing before meeting Toothless. He’s good at it. And he meets every physical challenge he has with an invention.
He is also a natural born leader - though he never fit the mould of what a Viking should look like, he fits the mould of what a leader should be. A leader needs to earn his respect, and though still the smaller male Viking, he is very well respected.
He is fearless.
Push comes to shove, Hiccup is reliable, courageous and quick thinking. He does not back down from a challenge. Yet, he isn’t intimidated by others strength - he allows everyone else to hone their skills and be their best selves as he has allowed himself to be.
HICCUP inspires me because his growth and leadership and story comes from him first accepting himself and in time, he becomes everything he was suppose to be. My biggest take-away from him is, you will never lose if you give yourself time to see the bigger picture of why things are the way they are.
Of course I love Hiccup for so much more, but I don’t know how much you’d wanna read 🤣 Nonetheless, on the top of my head, that’s what I think he means to me.
The other HTTYD Character that Equally Inspires me is, of course, ASTRID

To be fair, we know her significantly more than the other characters so it’s natural to fall in love with her.
But they have created a very beautiful character to love.
Astrid is strong and independent, but nothing about that takes away from her femininity. Sometimes I feel like movies/shows about strong independent women make those women so unfeeling and hard.
Astrid feels real to me. She’s driven, self-disciplined and honourable, but she can also be condescending and harsh - and instead of getting defensive about it, she actually listens to that constructive criticism when it comes and changes.
She knows she is born to lead (though not in the same way Hiccup is - which is also admirable because she humbly gives way to him to do his thing) so she needs to learn how to inspire her soldiers, help them improve and make them better. She can’t do that if she always thinks she’s right. That’s what brings about toxic leadership. And she is not toxic.
I admire her dedication to improve. It’s something I love in Hiccup as well, but Astrid just works on herself and her performance. It’s inspiring.
While there’s more, I’ll keep it to these two things for now.
What about the Franchise that Speaks to me Most
Friendship. Trust. Becoming. Young Adulthood. Reality Check. Being lost. Finding Yourself.
So much really. So much.
When I first started writing this blog, I actually lost my grandmother. I loved my grandmother so much. She was warmth, love and life personified.
After she left, I was lost for a very long time, failing exams and switching careers. I couldn’t focus.
This show helped me piece together a lot of my own personal feelings. It helped me think through certain problems. When I synthesised those thoughts into this blog space, I felt like I was dealing with them.
And when I watch Hiccup and Toothless glide in the sky, it made me feel like I am there with them. The soundtrack itself is also very transportive.
I think my favourite thing about the franchise was/is that it made me feel again. At least on the rewatch leading to the creation of this channel.
The franchise when I first watch those movies, when I was really young made me feel “found”, if that makes any sense to you. Because, it talks about not being alone - like how the loneliest dragon could find the loneliest boy Viking. And that these two in turn, found a lonely girl looking for something to see herself in.
Each step of Hiccup’s life was mine. Even when he didn’t want to “take on the family business” and desired to be more than he and the world he’s in is built - that was me, still is me.
This franchise has something for almost everyone. And every which way you turn Hiccup, you will see a small glimpse of yourself in him.
In essence, I think the franchise just speaks and that’s what makes it so damn good.

Dragonoid's - Encanto Au
Ok I know there already has been a dragon au, but I was listening to the HTTYD soundtrack and when inspiration strikes, I have to take it-
So, in the world, there are two types of dragons. Normal ones you see flying around with "violent" tendencies. And the second kinds are called dragonoid's. Dragonoid's are a sub type of dragons. With every different type of dragon there's a dragonoid to follow.
As a dragon-oid you are either looked at as a Zoo animal, bad omen, or something to kill for money. Dragon scales and just skin in general is very valuable. Just one scale or slither of skin could have you set for life.
Eggs are even more valuable because the shell is like a crystal. For example:
Plus, dragon eggs have children in them. If you have one, you can have a constant supply of money. (I'll let you figure that entails on your own)
Dragonoid characteristics.
So, the obvious, scales!
Scales start from the fingers and slightly pass the cubital fossa in a gradient like fashion. Same for the legs. The scales Start from the tip of the toes and slightly pass the knee. Claws are retractable but are still sharp and noticeable.
Their skin is also bioluminescent so they have tons of beautiful spots and patterns that light up in the dark.
Sclera can be a variety of different colors and so can the iris. So when a dragon needs to hide out in the open they need to wear a cloak, as well as gloves.
If you have horns it’s best to shave them down or find a group to stay with. When you live in a group others can bring in much needed necessities for you. Also, horns can be a variety of sizes and can stretch far. So it’s usually mandatory to shave them down so you can lay down properly.
Alma has smaller horns that are about three inches tall so she doesn’t need to worry about shaving them down.
Tails are always gonna be long, about five feet in length for an average adult. But thankfully they are somewhat thin (only 4-five inches thick) and can easily wrap around a dragon's leg as a way to hide it.
Some have wings, some don't. So, others have to rely on climbing or running/walking. Some can breathe fire, spit out lightning, acid, and some can’t at all. Those that can’t usually rely on their claws and strength.
And yes, every single dragon has a fondness for shiny things and are semi-hoarders of anything shiny and glittery.
Typical places for dragon groups to live are far away areas in forests or crystal caves. Crystal caves are the most common places to live and other dragons will fight other dragon groups for it. (Dragonoid's are smart resourceful people with astounding intelligence, but I didn’t say they weren’t feral, especially when they need safety.)
-
Alma lived in a pleasant little dragonoid village. She was happy, which is an oddity when you are considered poaching material. It was hidden within the mountains and WAS a safe haven for dragonoid's AND regular dragons.
The story starts out the same, and you know how it ends.
-
The encanto is one big underground crystal cave mixed with a jungle..sort of? Kind of like this for reference (Yes, it's from HTTYD, BITE ME!)

There’s even a water part for more aquatic dragons. Speaking of which, the underground sanctuary has smaller caves inside fit for families to live in. These smaller caves have large holes in them that work like bedrooms.
However, as an egg and even a baby, you sleep inside your parents' room until you're at least five years old.
I need worldbuilding ideas for this au soooo
@miracles-and-butterflies
@glowing-celesticpetals
@gamerbearmira
@evostar
@thefourchimes
(You are definitely NOT obligated to give my ideas. I'm just tagging y'all in case you might be interested in helping)

I am BURNING with the need to elaborate, so I’ll start with Who’s Who:
- Ponyboy would be Hiccup, obviously
BUT I’ll explain anyway. A boy who is misunderstood by the parental figure in his life and wants more than the violence he’s been raised with. Who am I describing, Ponyboy or Hiccup? I dunno, you tell me
- and Darry is Stoick, again, obviously
Both Darry and Stoick are the leaders of their community/gang. Darry butts heads with Ponyboy in the same way Stoick and Hiccup do, which causes immense strain on their relationship
- Soda and Steve are Ruffnut and Tuffnut (no, they’re not siblings. Soda is still related to Pony and Darry)
They are best friends and can totally read each other’s mind. I personally headcanon that Steve and Soda get up to some WILD shit in their free time, just like the twins. I think they would also be the only two who would be in sync enough to ride a zippleback (yes, the dragons still correlate with each character. This is important later on for some of my choices)
- Two-Bit is so Gobber to me it hurts
I am a Darry/Two-Bit Best Friends Truther. Two-Bit and Ponyboy’s relationship is also something so special to me, and I really do think it mirrors Gobber’s and Hiccup’s. Both Two-Bit and Gobber look out for Pony and Hiccup, respectively. The duos also hang out with each other (Pony and Two-Bit spending the day together after Pony got back from Windrixville and Hiccup working at Gobber’s forge). Gobber is also the wise-cracker of the bunch, like Two-Bit
- Johnny is Astrid (NOT AS THE LOVE INTEREST. In this house, under MY roof, we ship Purly)
Astrid has the respect of Berk like Johnny has the respect of the gang. Both are really tough (and they’re both complete softies once you get to know them). Astrid is also the first person to truly get Hiccup, and that’s a defining aspect of Ponyboy and Johnny’s relationship. They get each other. Johnny would understand Pony’s love for dragons the same way he understands Pony’s love for sunsets and movies. The way Astrid understands Hiccup and his love for dragons
- Curly is Snotlout
Doing stupid shit and getting into trouble because of it. Again, who am I describing, Curly or Snotlout. (This characterization and Tim’s also just work out really nicely)
- and Randy is Fishlegs cause I say so
Randy, who understands why the Soc’s and the greasers fight very clearly. Fishlegs, who knows just as much, if not more, about dragons than Hiccup.
Now getting into the TV shows and later movies:
- Tim is Spitelout
Him and Darry are friends, but a little to the left of not quite. Also, Spitelout has his own kind of sway amongst the people of Berk, which reflects how Tim is the leader of the Shepard gang
- Paul is Alvin
The Lore between Paul and Darry fits SO WELL with Alvin and Stoick’s backstory
- Bob is Gustav because he’s kind of a shit
Bob wants to fit in with The Cool Kids TM. I also just think it would be funny
- Cherry is gonna be Heather
Cherry and Heather are both badasses and they both connect with Ponyboy/Hiccup on their shared love for something other people hate or scoff at. she and Dagur also both have red hair and green eyes
- Dallas is the one and only Eret, son of Eret
Eret and Dally are both men who have been hardened to the world, but still manage to do the right thing. They both come from far off lands and have a good relationship Astrid/Johnny
- and Angela is Valka
I had to throw some Shepard family angst in SOMEWHERE
- I have no idea where to put Marcia and it is KILLING ME
For the purposes of this AU, the greaser/Soc divide doesn’t exist. I also based these characterizations more on shared character arc/personality, as well as Outsiders relationships, than HTTYD relationships
please PLEASE ask me more questions about this, I have so many more Thoughts but this post is long as fuck already
And to close, a meme that fits this AU, for your troubles:

Just thought of an Outsiders How to Train Your Dragon AU……I have SO many Thoughts

Autistic Hiccup x ADHD Anna Headcanons
SO I’ve been really into the whole Autistic x ADHD ship dynamic and Hiccanna...highkey fits??? Like y’all know I will die on my “Anna has ADHD” hill, but after reading this post by @hobie-brown I’m like wait, the autistic Hiccup headcanon is wonderful too??? And blends SO WELL with ADHD Anna??? And I absolutely HAD to explore it more so BOOM headcanon time! Another special thanks to @hobie-brown for writing the super lovely autistic Hiccup headcanon masterpost that inspired me to do this!
Disclaimer: I myself am not on the spectrum (part of the reason I’ve always felt a little weird about definitively HCing characters as autistic unless I see actual autistic people HC them that way too), so most of the stuff here is stuff I know secondhand from my autistic friends! I do have ADHD, so I can always promise that ADHD Anna will be 100% authentic XD
~Anna absolutely gets into Hiccup’s special interests to try and impress him. The most obvious one being, of course, dragons, but also dinosaurs (extinct dragons), lizards (tiny dragons), and Dungeons and Dragons (An RPG game that does, in fact, include dragons). Hiccup absolutely had that dragonology book as a kid and got obsessed with it beyond all reasonability. Hilariously, Anna’s wooing strategy of indulging his special interests works like a charm--mainly because a) he’s pretty flattered that someone takes THAT much of an interest in what he likes and b) half the time, ANNA finds that she genuinely gets into whatever said special interest is and finds them easy to hyperfixate on. It helps that the more she obsesses over it herself, the more she has to talk to Hiccup about XD
~Specifically, Anna definitely joins a DnD campaign at some point so that Hiccup will think she’s a “cool gamer girl”--and then gets unironically obsessed with it and starts writing 10-page backstories for all of her characters. She later tells Hiccup it started out as a ruse to win his heart via nerdiness, and he absolutely loses his shit laughing.
~One of their overlapping special interests/hyperfixations is high fantasy. Hiccup is, unsurprisingly, all about the mythical creatures while Anna is more into the magic and the zesty political drama, but you dun best believe they catch every CGI-ridden fantasy movie that ever comes out. They’ve both spent a literal fortune on fantasy movie tickets, even moreso on watching them in 3D or Imax. How embarrassing for both of them.
~Another less-obvious overlapping interest is history. Hiccup gets into it while looking into the cultural mythos of dragons (he’s pretty fascinated by the fact that so many cultures around the world thought up similar creatures independently), while Anna gets into it because she grew up cooped up bored and lonely in a big house, and entertained herself by looking into the history behind some of the family paintings. They don’t seem it at first, but they’re actually both huge medieval and ancient civilization history buffs.
~Hiccup is THE most touch-repulsed person you will ever meet. This is unfortunate, as he is also SUPER touch-starved and absolutely does not realize it (I mean, I’ve never gotten the vibe Stoic was the super huggy type, considering his and Hicc’s relationship in HTTYD 1). This means he has absolutely no fucking clue what to make of Anna when they first meet meet. Anna’s the sort of person to give physical affection pretty freely, especially if she likes you--usually in the form of hugs, arm pats or playful swats, putting her elbow on your shoulder, etc etc. Hiccup is kinda just like “this is way too much touching but like??? I kinda like having her this close to me??? What do???”
~Anna, meanwhile, notices that Hiccup kinda stiffens up whenever she touches him and seems to not be crazy about it and she’s just immediately like “yo what’s wrong???” And as SOON as he admits he’s not all that crazy about being touched randomly she’s like “OH MY GOD I AM SO SORRY” and never touches him without asking again.
~As soon as she finds out touch a kind of A Whole Thing for him, Anna is like...AGGRESSIVELY respectful of Hiccup’s boundaries when it comes to physical affection. Almost annoyingly so. She gets in the habit of basically never initiating any kind of physical touch without asking first--even long after they’ve started dating, and he’s told her it’s okay to initiate touching as long as she’s not smothery about it. She still refuses out of principle.
~They come up with a kind of “consent language” so Anna can pretty quickly determine when it’s all right to touch Hiccup--because Anna still really likes being physically affectionate with him, and he does actually like receiving physical affection a lot of the time (because, again, touch-starved), he’s just choosy about who does it. They work out a system based off of small, light touches that Hiccup doesn’t mind where it’s basically 2 taps on his shoulder for “can I hug you around the neck,” 2 taps on his side for “can I hug you around the waist,” 2 taps on his arm for “can I grab/lightly slap/punch your arm,” and 1 tap on is shoulder for “can I put my arm/elbow on your shoulder.” If he’s cool with it he’ll either nod or just say “yeah go ahead.” It works a lot quicker than asking “can I do such-and-such specific touch” every single time, and allows Anna to keep some of her spontaneity. They develop this during their friendship and it ends up rolling over into their relationship, even after Hiccup has basically told her she doesn’t need to ask permission for a lot of these anymore. She adds a new one after they start dating--she taps him a couple times wherever she wants to kiss him to ask if it’s cool to give him a smooch! It usually is.
~INFODUMPING. Literally SO. MUCH. INFODUMPING. Hiccup absolutely WILL NOT SHUT UP when he gets to talking about one of his special interests. Anna just will not shut up in general, but when the topic changes to one of her hyperfixations, it’s even worse. If you try to have a conversation with these two while they’re infodumping, you WILL get talked over. Honestly, left to their own devices, they could probably infodump to each other for literal days on end.
~Despite how much they both like to infodump, they’re both pretty good about being patient and indulging the other when it’s their partner’s turn to infodump in the conversation XD They are, however, notorious about accidentally triggering a barely-related infodump in the other person. It’s not uncommon for one of them to finish a rant and then the other goes “OH THAT REMINDS ME” and sets off on a completely different, barely-related rant.
~Hiccup actually really appreciates how overexpressive--and occasionally overdramatic--Anna tends to be. He never has to try and figure out what she’s thinking because she just says everything in her brain, and her body language basically always matches how she’s feeling to a ridiculous extent, so he never has to give himself a headache trying to read her. The fact that she’s the opposite of subtle and has no filter whatsoever works great for him, because he doesn’t have to drive himself insane trying to understand her. He gets her better than he gets most people because she’s an open goddamn book. The boy’s never been the best with social cues at all, never mind the nuanced, obscure ones, so Anna’s general straightforwardness and utter inability to hide her true feelings at literally any time is a breath of fresh air. What you see is basically what you get, and Hiccup wouldn’t have it any other way.
~People think when Anna and Hiccup start dating it’s gonna be a disaster, mainly because he’s so blunt and she can be...”oversensitive” (i.e. has a REALLY bad case of RSD). Turns out they’re dead wrong--because Hiccup has RSD too! (I mean, come ON--look how BADLY he wants to get his village’s approval! And how hard he takes it when his dad or someone else is mad at him--even if he tries to hide it with snark) He’s actually one of the few people who can be blunt enough with Anna that she realizes when she’s being a dumbass but tactful enough not to hurt her feelings or set off her RSD--because god, has he been there. When Anna is being especially difficult and has worked herself into a real bad funk, Hiccup (and sometimes Elsa) is the only people who can talk to her and get through to her without getting blown up at.
~They stim in similar ways!!! They both tend to fidget or kinda bounce up in down in place as a way to comfort themselves and calm themselves down (I see them both having a lot of anxiety and generally being kind of paranoid, although Anna is MUCH better at hiding this via putting on a cheerful face). They both do the leg bounce!!! Also if they get SUPER excited they’ll do a little awkward happy dance!!! They both also tend to stim by rubbing things in small, repetitive motions--with Hiccup, it’s usually his sketching pens, his ear, his head, or the back of his neck, while with Anna, it’s usually her other hand, her arm, her clothes, or really anything with kind of a comforting, consistent texture (some favorites are rubber, felt, and velvet). After they start dating, they actually will stim with each other’s hands while holding hands--usually by squeezing the other person’s hand in kind of a repetitive pattern or doing the thumb-rub thing on the back of the other person’s hand. It’s not uncommon for them to each be doing something completely unrelated while holding hands and just stimming on each other’s hands the entire time. Anna especially really loves when she feels Hiccup stimming on her, because it’s her little indicator that he’s happy and feels at peace and content in her presence and she LOVES being able to do that for him!
~They both stim by playing with hair too! Anna likes to play with her own to stim--mainly by figeting with the end of her braids or tucking hair behind her ear. She DOES love to ruffle Hiccup’s hair too (and she LOVES how fluffy it is!), but it’s usually not a stim thing. After they start dating, Anna does occasionally stim by massaging Hiccup’s hair/scalp, but she doesn’t usually do it for very long. Hiccup really loves braiding Anna’s hair, or just playing with it when it’s down. it helps him relax and clear his mind to have something fairly repetitive and/or mindless to do.
~Even after gaining some confidence, Hiccup still has a fair bit of social anxiety, so he and Anna basically always go to parties and social events together and stick with each other the whole time to make it less intimidating for him. Hiccup generally prefers to let Anna do the talking when they chat with people, and sometimes if he’s REALLY nervous he’ll sometimes even let her kinda talk for him (not in a condescending “speaking over” kinda way, but more in like a “I can sense you’re not comfortable speaking here so I’ll help you out as best I can” kinda way). She always makes sure to leave space in the conversation for him to take over talking if he wants. She’s also incredibly prone to bragging about his accomplishments to basically everyone they know. Hiccup is both embarrassed and flattered by this.
~When Anna finds out about meltdowns (probably through Hiccup mentioning it kind of offhandedly--“Eh, sorry I went AWOL last night, I was having a bit of a meltdown. Don’t worry about it, I’m fine now.”) she lowkey gets super anxious and frustrated because she REALLY wants to help, but has no idea how. Cue literal HOURS of research on the internet and AGGRESSIVE memorizing of any and all tips that she reads that she thinks would help. Which, of course, means several MORE hours spent going over flashcards like she’s studying for a goddamn test, because Anna has never been known for her sharp, expansive memory.
~The first time Hiccup ever has a meltdown in front of her (maybe after a really bad phone fight with his dad or something? Just general sensory overload?), she takes him to a secluded room and IMMEDIATELY gets rid of anything that could be agitating sensory-wise. She dims the lights! She closes the blinds! She throws a nearby clock, an alarm, a timer, and several other objects with only the slightest potential of making an annoying noise out of a nearby window in a fit of passion! She goes on a frenzied quest to find Hiccup’s noise-cancelling headphones--and finishes it in record time! Even in a state of emotional turmoil, Hiccup realizes that Anna’s being just a little too methodical in how she goes about all this--these are the kind of things that wouldn’t ever occur naturally to her to do. So as soon as he calms down a bit and has screamed into a pillow for a while, he’s like “...did you go on the internet to look up how to help with meltdowns?” and Anna’s like “...yes?” And Hiccup is lowkey so touched he starts crying all over again...and then, naturally, makes a long string of snarky comments to try and distract from it XD
~For their anniversary Anna saves up a bunch and buys Hiccup a lizard and a terrarium!!! She gets him a crocodile skink because, I quote, “Well, they always look annoyed, they’re kinda shy, they don’t like to be touched, and they look like tiny dragons, so they reminded me of you!!!” Hiccup screams like a goddamn fangirl, he’s SO excited. As luck would have it, Hiccup’s crocodile skink is a lot less skittish and prone to hiding than they usually are, and he actually lets Hiccup pick him up and pet him without much issue. Which is honestly great, because repeatedly touching something smooth and even like lizard scales helps calm Hiccup down when he’s agitated and helps with some of his sensory issues.
~Probably goes without saying, but Hiccup basically NEVER genuinely gives Anna a hard time about her memory problems or how she’s not always the quickest on the uptake, and if anyone tries to call her annoying, dumb, or immature he will absolutely roast them into oblivion. He does sometimes like...lightly tease her about jumping into things without thinking or never shutting up, but he never pushes it if he can tell she’s genuinely bothered by it (and, again, Anna is very easy to read, so it’s not hard to tell XD)
~I’ve seen other people in the fandom HC either Hiccup, Anna, or both of them as BOTH autistic and ADHD, and honestly...fuck yes!!! I’m down for this too! I love the idea of these two disaster ND kids just vibing with each other on so many damn levels that it’s like...incomprehensible to the average human XD Like man, they fuckin GET each other!!! I’m pretty happy with most combinations of ADHD + Autistic headcanons for Anna and Hiccup, so long as they end up vibing!!!
~THEY JUST. THEY LOVE EACH OTHER. SO MUCH. THEY LITERALLY WOULD DIE FOR EACH OTHER. I AM SURE OF IT. I’M CRYING.

On Highest Point - A HTTYD book fanfic
Fishlegs comforts Hiccup as he worries about his future as chief of the Hairy Hooligans.
Set after the first How to Train Your Dragon book.
Hurt/Comfort.
Fishlegs squinted his eyes at the midday sun. The bright spring day was still biting cold and his knuckles were numb against the package in his right hand. He waded his way through the long, thick grasses of Huge Hill occasionally losing his balance as his body fought against the sea gale and bumpy ground.
He made his way upwards. The craggy rocks of the peak of Huge Hill were slowly emerging, reaching upwards to the wisps of cloud overhead. Hiccup’s figure was visible on the rocks, the horns on his helmet sticking out above the outline of the peak. When Fishlegs reached him he lay out the package beside his friend, unfurling the cloth to reveal a large hunk of bread with a pot of honey.
‘I noticed you weren’t at lunch’.
Hiccup said nothing, he only gazed out onto the open ocean.
They sat in silence for a while and watched the gannets and gulls, little white specks against the blinding expanse of blue.
‘What if I just don’t do it.’
He glanced over at Hiccup who was staring determinedly at the horizon.
‘What if I just give it all to Snotlout,’ Hiccup said, his voice cold. ‘I tell my father I’m not going to do it and I give Snotlout everything. He can even have my sword if he wants. I mean my father would hate me for it but what’s the change there? And I doubt my mother would notice.’
Hiccup’s eyes were ablaze with the shine of the sea. His features, usually fair, were hardened in the face of the wind. Crimson flowered from his jaw up across his cheeks.
‘He’d make a far better chief than me,’ Hiccup continued. ‘He’s charismatic, violent, an extraordinary fighter. Look at his dragon, for Thor’s sake! It’s a sign, Fishlegs, it’s a sign from the Gods that I should have given up the moment we left that Wild Dragon Cliff. I should have stolen a ship from the southern harbour and just kept going.’
‘That’s not true, Hiccup -’
‘How in Valhalla am I supposed to be in charge of this lot? My own father doesn’t even listen to me. I don’t have the air of leadership that Snotlout has, I will never be able to command an army the way he could.’ Hiccup angrily threw a stone into the thrift. ‘Face it, Fishlegs, I am useless.’
It was true that Fishlegs often buckled under the weight of the Pirate Training Programme. He knew he wasn’t cut out to be a hero, but he never wanted to be one. Hiccup didn’t have that choice. He didn’t fit in the traditional mould of the son of the chief, but Fishlegs knew that it was Hiccup’s difference that would make him such a great leader. He sighed and looked at Hiccup, trying to reach him.
‘Your Father is proud of you, Hiccup. I know he is. Look at how you defeated the Green Death. You were a hero!’ Fishlegs swayed to nudge Hiccup affectionately. ‘You used your brain and not just muscles! Nobody else in the tribe could have pulled that off, if you weren’t there we would have all be eaten, I’m sure of it.’
Hiccup shook his head. ‘It’s no good. Either people will hate the leader that I will become, or I will have to become an entirely different person.’ His voice quivered and finally broke as he tore his eyes from the horizon. He hung his head, tears running down his cheeks.
They have had many conversations like this one over the years. All his life Hiccup has been expected to grow into what a chief should be; a barbarian with big muscles and an even bigger appetite. Fishlegs knew that it was his gentle nature that would make him the best chief the tribe could have. He wished Hiccup could see himself the way he did.
‘You’re kind, Hiccup. That’s more valuable in a leader than anything. More valuable in a person. Besides,’ Fishlegs continued, ‘you’ve got more military tactics in your little finger than Snotlout has in his whole fat head.’
Hiccup let out a teary laugh and laid his head on Fishlegs’ shoulder.
‘You’ve always looked after me. You’ve been there for me all my life. If you can take care of me like you have, you can certainly look after the tribe. So what if you’re not naturally violent? Aggression is overrated.’
There was quiet for a while as Fishlegs held Hiccup, both boys watching Toothless as he scampered around the hilltop, chasing after rabbits and screeching at the entrances of their burrows.
‘Ow!’ Hiccup flinched as something fell on him. They both blinked upwards, Hiccup rubbing his head, to see Horrorcow flapping above them. ‘Carrot? ’ she offered in a motherly way. Hiccup hastily wiped his face and reached forward to pick up the large vegetable. ‘Thank you Horrorcow, that’s very kind of you.’ Horrorcow smiled and flapped off to chew at the grasses. Hiccup discarded the vegetable and turned to the package that Fishlegs had brought him and tore off a chunk of the bread, dipping it in the honey.
‘Thank you for coming to find me, Fishlegs.’
Their eyes met and the two boys smiled at each other.
‘Don’t mention it.’

My HTTYD 3 Criticisms
This is gonna be a long one so I’m gonna put my criticisms under a read more
Just wanted to make a post listing all of the HTTYD 3 criticisms I have (this isn’t an attack on people who liked the movie, it’s totally valid if you did, I just want to list some stuff that I didn’t like and stuff that, in my opinion, didn’t work in the movie)
- The Light Fury logically shouldn’t have been able to cloak in the first scene when she’s caged up, she would have needed to fly through a plasma blast and there’s no way she did that whilst caged??
- Snotlout hitting on Valka was just really weird and uncomfortable
- There’s no way Grimmel killed all of the Night Furies, he’s just one man with a bunch of Deathgrippers and a crossbow
- The Deathgrippers are portrayed as an ‘evil’ species of dragon, but the dragons are said to be just wild animals?? How can a wild animal be ‘evil’ and have evil intentions if they’re just wild animals? It’s not their fault that their diet consists of other dragons

- The Deathgrippers are also being controlled, drugged and held captive by Grimmel too, just like the Light Fury, but they don’t also deserve to be rescued too??
- If the Light Fury is so scared of humans why did she decide to pick Hiccup up and yeet him?? Surely she would have tried to avoid being seen and especially being touched by them after being caged and drugged by dragon hunters?? If Toothless had looked like he was in danger I could understand her trying to intervene and get rid of Hiccup but she intentionally came towards him unprovoked
- The Light Fury tried to kill Hiccup twice and Toothless didn’t growl once?? (I know she’s scared and I don’t blame her for lashing out at humans after being drugged and caged but I would’ve expected a stronger reaction from Toothless) But in the third date scene the Light Fury steps on a line in his drawing and that’s when he chooses to growl at her
- it feels like all of the other villains in the movie were just dumbed down to make Grimmel look smart
- Grimmel’s Night Fury info contradicts what the franchise has said or shown about Night Furies previously:
1. He said that Night Furies can’t fly for long periods without rest, yet Toothless has one of the biggest wing surface area to body ratios in the franchise and his wings are soaring wings like an eagles, and so he should be able to fly for maybe 4-6 hours straight without rest
2. He said Night Furies can’t survive cold temperatures but Toothless has been living in Berk for 6 years without an issue, and Berk is supposed to be freezing for most of the year according to Hiccup
- New Berk is only accessible by dragon, so how does New Berk trade with other villages? And sail out to catch fish for food? After all of the dragons are gone??

- Night Furies having the ability to cloak is pointless, they’re nocturnal and camouflaged when flying at night so they don’t need to be able to cloak. Idk maybe it could be a leftover adaption that they retained??
- Hiccup is portrayed as ‘naive’ for thinking that Toothless will come back to him

Toothless and Hiccup don’t have a parent-kid relationship. That would suggest that Toothless wants to get away from Hiccup and be more independent, yet he never showed an interest in flying without Hiccup until the Light Fury came along, and that was only because she wouldn’t let Hiccup get near her. If Toothless never showed signs wanting to leave Hiccup or fly on his own in the past then why is Hiccup naive for thinking that he’ll come back?
- Just a small thing but I would’ve liked to see Valka discovering the Hidden World with Hiccup, it would’ve been a nice to see them bonding over the discovery and it could’ve shown how far their mother-son relationship has come in a year
- The Mushroom Forest in the Hidden World must produce spores, and long exposure to mushroom spores causes lung inflammation so surely the dragons living in the Hidden World wouldn’t be able to breathe properly and would get sick from breathing in spores??
- The Light Furies don’t seem to fit with the Hidden World’s bright, saturated colours, their white, pale scales would stand out against the colourful vegetation growing there
- What if a group of Deathgrippers infiltrated the Hidden World? Wouldn’t the Hidden World dragons be trapped and cornered inside?
- Toothless didn’t consider his flock at all when he disappeared with the Light Fury for a day, shouldn’t he have been with them to help protect them just in case, especially since Grimmel just burned down their previous home and may still be tracking them?
- How can Toothless be the king of the hidden world, a place he only discovered hours ago, and command it? Wouldn’t the dragons there already have an alpha dragon??
- It would’ve been nice to have a moment in the Hidden World where Toothless seems homesick and misses Hiccup, just to know he at least still cares about him and hasn’t forgotten
- When the Light Fury comes back to New Berk and smells Grimmel she flies towards him instead of the opposite way??
- Toothless sacrifices his entire flock (including hatchlings) and lets them be caged up by the dragon hunters to save a girl he only met 3 days ago (not saying he shouldn’t care about the Light Fury but he should probably care a lot more about the well-being of the flock he’s been in charge of and has known for a year)
- The Light Fury is somehow aware enough in her drugged state to be able to fly straight with Grimmel on her back in the final chase scene (same point applies to the Deathgrippers throughout the entire movie now that I think about it)
- The Deathgrippers that were still attached to Grimmel’s airship as it crashed into the water weren’t at least attempted to be rescued and were left to drown
- The Deathgrippers shouldn’t have been able to catch up to two of the fastest dragons species in the franchise in the final chase scene
- Coming to the conclusion of the dragons leaving felt rushed and out of the blue
- The message at the end of this film totally contradicts the other two films; the first movie was based around the fact that dragons aren’t the wild, savage beasts that they are thought to be, but beings capable of human-like intelligence and emotion. HTTYD 3 contradicts this by saying the dragons are just wild animals and they can’t help following and listening to instinct.

HTTYD 2’s end message was even though there are bad people out there, we will still fight for what’s right, even if we have to go up against armies and armadas, we will change the world bit by bit so that people and dragons can live together in peace.

HTTYD 3 scraps that message and instead of fighting for the dragons and changing the world for the better, the dragons are just sent away to hide in a hole in the ocean indefinitely and are just left to hope that someone picks up where Berk left off. They beat the warlords pretty easily, Grimmel is gone and the Light Fury has started coming around to Hiccup so why do the dragons have to go all of a sudden?? New Berk isn’t accessible by bad guys (unless they have control of a dragon) and Berk has an entire flock of dragons on their side controlled by a Night Fury so their island is easily defendable.
They are in one of the best positions to continue rescuing, saving and protecting dragons yet that’s when they choose to give up?? Hiccup didn’t even give up in HTTYD 2 when his dad was killed by Drago but he beats a bunch of warlords and an apparently famed Night Fury hunter and that’s when he gives up?? It doesn’t make sense to me
- Toothless was able to smell the Light Fury from miles away in the exodus scene but wasn’t able to smell Hiccup from the rock he was lying on in that decade time skip and almost attacked him and his family, even though in the first film when Toothless was an actual wild dragon he knew Hiccup wasn’t a threat if he wasn’t holding a weapon
- Kinda bummed that Toothless’ appearance didn’t change between the ages of 21 and 31 in that decade time skip, I expected more nubs (the Light Fury too)
- The Homecoming short just proves that if people and dragons aren’t united anymore things just kind of almost go back to the way they were in HTTYD 1 (making the whole 6 years of human-dragon companionship just kind of pointless), the new generations of Berk will never grow up with dragons alongside them and see with their own eyes that they are more than just wild beasts (and apparently they weren’t being taught about dragons either until they put on the show about them according to the short), and dragons will never grow up alongside humans to see that some are good and want to help them, not trap and kill them.
- How is someone in the future supposed to pick up where Berk left off fighting for the dragons and uniting them when the Hidden World is so hostile towards humans?? No human is able to enter without getting swarmed by dragons
If you made it all the way to the bottom thanks for reading :] and again, I’m not trying to attack anyone who liked the movie, I’m just listing the things I, personally, didn’t like about it and the things that I thought didn’t work.

Tbh yeah. I had pretty high expectations since everyone is saying this movie is “the best dreamworks movie ever,” and that it’s “better than httyd,” but honestly… this whole film fell very flat for me. This is a long review, so TL;DR: the movie establishes a lot of compelling themes in the beginning, but fails to follow through on any of them, leaving us with a vapid ending that feels more suited to a much younger child audience than the marketing and even the beginning of the film suggested.
The movie starts out strong: the protagonist, Roz, is a robot that washes up on a deserted island. Roz is programmed to be a helping robot, a producer and provider that simply takes orders from humans in an organized, “pre-planned”[sic] environment; thus, she struggles to understand and adapt to the wilderness, where life and death are intertwined and all creatures are too concerned with survival to indulge her. Even after adapting to the language of the animals, learning more about their behaviors and the unique advantages each has in the ecosystem, Roz STILL cannot fit in; thus, she resolves to contact her manufacturers and be brought back to civilization. But this plan is smashed to pieces when Roz unwittingly destroys a goose nest, kills the mother goose, and breaks all the eggs but one. The egg hatches into a runty gosling she names Brightbill. She tries to leave, but she is given orders from another animal to rear the orphaned Brightbill so he can survive the dangers of the forest and fly south for winter. Roz, who cannot disobey direct orders, struggles with the crushing responsibility of raising a baby she didn’t ask for and doesn’t know how to care for. Thankfully, she receives some scant assistance from a reclusive fox, Fink, who starts out more interested in using her than helping her. This trio—Roz, Brightbill, and Fink—are all outcasts on this island, but they find each other and slowly learn to make the best of it. Roz works herself to the bone, literally, to keep Brightbill out of trouble, losing and breaking parts of herself along the way.
About here is where the film starts to fall apart. After all of this is established, there’s a very abrupt shift in the themes of the film, so the second half feels very rushed, disconnected, and trite in comparison to the beginning. ⤵️
After a five second montage equivalent to height marks on a wall to signify Brightbill’s growth, Roz somehow goes from a reluctant guardian in way over her head to a being possessed by the magical power of motherly love; this is handwaived away by the narrative with a one-off line about her gradually rewriting her programming piece by piece over time—which is never shown or even hinted at previously in the movie—all for the sake of her task. The relationships between Roz, Brightbill, and Fink all vastly shifted offscreen during this timeskip, so the closeness they share feels unearned—especially the closeness between Roz and Fink after Brightbill grows up and leaves the nest.
After Brightbill flies south for the winter, Roz doesn’t return to the manufacturers as planned; she stays in the forest instead, giving and giving and giving parts of herself to save the other animals—who have shunned, feared, and hated her, bullied her and stolen pieces of her since the beginning of the film. She rescues them one by one from an unexpected deep freeze until she is breaking apart at the seams, powering down, unable to continue on. But the emotional low that the entire movie has been building towards thus far—Roz’s death—never comes; instead, we’re treated to a banal scene of Fink lecturing the other animals about the value of kindness around a campfire, like a page out of a parable. Fink scolds them for eating each other to survive and all the animals are suddenly very contrite and become friends, blah blah blah. Roz shuts down. But where she might have died and been slowly rebuilt/nursed back to life by all the animals who have been tearing her innards out since the beginning of the film, or where the animals might have needed to find human help to save her, time skips once again and she is just magically fine come spring. The missing parts and ever-growing pools of fluid leaking from her ports are never shown or talked about again.
Even when she commits the ultimate sacrifice by ripping out her power core to save Brightbill near the end of the movie, there are no consequences or fallout for that action. She has been completely hollowed out, broken and battered both by what others have done to her and by her own hand… but it’s okay because apparently she doesn’t need any of the parts of herself she’s lost when her body is being puppeted around by the magic of motherly love!
After she proclaims that she is a wild robot and realizes she wants to stay with her newfound family and community on the deserted island, she realizes she needs to go back to the humans anyway to prevent them from hurting the animals in pursuit of her. But she is just a robot; if she returns, the humans will steal her memories and reprogram her back to factory settings, destroying everything she has built for herself and her found family. This, again, is subverted by the same deus-ex-machina that’s kept her alive so far—the power of motherly love prevents their technology from working, so she remembers… somehow! But she remains with the humans anyway, one farming drone among many, because reasons.
Roz’s emotions are treated as jokes and her sacrifices are not treated as real sacrifices by the narrative. There are minimal consequences for Roz’s accidental murder of Brightbill’s biological mother and siblings; no consequences of the other animals’ mistreatment of her; no consequences for the destruction of her body or the erasure of her mind. The stakes are nonexistent. Every opportunity for a poignant, emotional climax is dropped and tiptoed around in favor of overstated “child-friendly” tropes and shallow morality lessons, as if the children watching are dumb and can’t be exposed to sadness. The Giving Tree told a more compelling and impactful story about self-sacrificial motherhood in 621 words than this film did in an hour and 42 minutes.
This has been an issue I’ve noticed with a LOT of children’s media recently: kids media is being watered down, as if the studios are afraid of facing backlash for producing films that can make the audience feel anything but vague wholesome feelings at the end. This case of watering down is particularly detrimental to the story. The intentions of the director may have aligned more with the ending, but sometimes, as a writer, you need to allow your stories to go where they want to go instead of trying to force them where YOU want them to go.
Silver is right. At the beginning of the film, the movie set up themes about finding family in unfavorable circumstances rather than by choice; learning to live in harmony with nature instead of against it; and that life is so beautiful and meaningful BECAUSE it is unplanned, wild, and ultimately finite. Instead of following through with these concepts, the director refused to let the story breathe and forced a pivot in the last half of the film. So the movie actually wound up saying, “it’s okay to allow others to use and abuse you because love will magically fix everything,” “being different is bad unless you prove to be useful,” and “segregation is great!” ?????
I just don’t understand the hype. The ending was a complete feel-good cop out, more suited to 3-7 year olds than the “8 years or older” demographic that the marketing seem to suggest. I went in expecting a life-changing masterpiece like How to Train Your Dragon, and instead I got Madagascar.
Just watched Wild Robot for the first time.
Went expecting it to be GOOD, solid, since everyone keeps saying it’s one of the best Dreamworks ever made.
It…. Failed.
Yeah, I don’t even see this as anything better than “average” - it felt more like “Over the Hedge”
The animation has a cool concept: robots being hard and shiny, artificial, with the natural world feeling like living paintings… but they never really committed to that or drew attention to the difference.
The messaging was trite and hammered in over and over. The characters were exaggerated and simply straightforward, and it really FELT like a movie made for children and which took no real risk and was formulaic in its delivery.
They had SO MANY opportunities to lock in on the themes they set up and hinted at- but chickened out and swerved from all of them in favor of the harmless story that has been done a million times before.
Like, they JOKED about death happening everywhere, but the actual seriousness of it fell flat, and made the characters feel like disposable extras.
We got hints the robot might fall apart out here without human intervention, but that ending was WEIRDLY subverted, and that breakdown never happened. She napped and was fine.
They JOKED about motherhood feeling like a crushing obligation that ruined your life when you don’t want the kid to start with, but never followed through. Instantly got magical power of loooove that defied all reason and could magic a robot to life.
They TALKED about family, and missing someone, but at the end our robot goes to be a super generic farm bot with no individuality among a thousand other farm bots like “this is where I belong”
Also!
—
It felt like it WANTED to be about:
Raising a child you didn’t want or ask for, and doing your best.
Learning to live with the natural world instead of apart from it.
Death is a part of the natural world and it’s what animals must do for survival.
Being an outcast because of things you can’t control, and finding family and happiness despite it.
—
What it’s actually about:
Differences are rightly punishable and undesirable unless they make you useful to the group.
The magical power of MOTHERLY LOVE can possess a robot and bring it to life like Pinocchio.
Human stuff belongs in the human world, and it’s NOT RIGHT for the robot to be with the animals.
Every winter all the animals call a truce and don’t eat each other, because mankind taught them Kindness. (Don’t worry about what predators eat, they can stop eating for the truce)
—-
Scavengers Reign did it better.
The Iron Giant did it better.
Wall-e did it better.
HTTYD nuked it from the sky.
The robots from Castle in the Sky had a more compelling story arc, and they were all dead.
It was fine. I liked the Peregrine Falcon. 6/10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Hiccup?! Toothless?!"
That's Astrid's voice that's calling out to him and his Bud, Hiccup lifts his head up from Toothless' and looks up to the night sky, the stars twinkling far above their heads. The remains of the sunset can still be seen in the far distance.
"We're down here!" Hiccup calls out to them and he can hear them running towards them.
Toothless' head is still on his lap. In the hours they've been waiting, neither of them has moved much. Hiccup's injured knee is bend beneath him and it has swollen that way, too.
"Hey, they're here! And they're alive!" Ruffnut happily announces and ten different faces appear where the front of the house should be and Hiccup is happy to see them, though he does have some questions.
So his smile melts just a tad, but only a tad. He's still happy to finally see them all.
"So mind telling me where you guys have been this whole time?" He asks. Considering how long it's been, he believes he has a right to know.
"I'm sorry, Hiccup, we got held up." Astrid apologizes, Stormfly chirps to back her up.
"We ran into some of those Hunters and then we all got caught in that earthquake!" Snotlout adds, wanting to be sure that Hiccup knows that it isn't their fault they got held up. They didn't just forget about their friends and then didn't worry about them the entire time it took them to get back to their leading duo.
"Okay! So can you guys come get us out? Toothless can't be moved before we get all of this off him first." Hiccup asks of them, gesturing to the wood and brick and dust covering his dragon, and they don't need to respond. Of course, they'll help them out.
Hiccup sees their faces disappear from view, without a doubt they're searching for a way down.
"And Fishlegs? Bring medical supplies!" Hiccup shouts up to him.
"Oh-okay!" Not the most reassuring thing you want to be asked, but not too surprising either considering their situation.
"Over there!" Astrid tells the Riders as she might've found a way into the basement and while they're on their way to them, Hiccup pets Toothless' head and shakes him lightly to rouse him out of his sleep.
"Hey Bud, wake up! They're here!" It doesn't take much as Toothless isn't sleeping that deeply. He can't with that wound in his wing.
Tiredly, Toothless wakes up and croons hopefully to his Rider, but doesn't lift his head from Hiccup's lap. Hiccup doesn't want him to either, he's lying just fine.
The knee that he dislocated earlier that day has probably swollen beyond use by now anyway, but that is of little concern to him.
The Riders reach them, climbing over and under the debris all around them.
"Wow, this earthquake wasn't nice to this neighborhood." Ruffnut remarks.
"Well, this neighborhood could've done with the occasional upkeep. The street, too." Hiccup says to her.
There have been a few aftershocks, too. When they happened, instead of leaving his Bud behind to get to infinitely safer ground, Hiccup had draped himself over his head and hoped for the best. Though this house that they're in is mostly ruined, there is still plenty of it left to fall.
Some smaller parts of it did, but not on them, fortunately.
"So what's the situation?" Astrid asks and kneels by the duo. Obviously, there's something wrong or they wouldn't still be sitting here in what looks like a basement.
She pets the Night Fury's head, too, and Toothless purrs appreciatively at the show of affection.
"His wing is hurt. Some wood broke off from somewhere and pierced his wing." Hiccup points it out. The bleeding has stopped a long while ago and the puddle that he had originally found hasn't grown much. The wood must be stopping it.
"Oh, that could be bad," Fishlegs states and stands there with all of their medical supplies. This place is quite cramped for someone his size. This place is quite cramped for everyone involved.
"So what do we do?" Tuffnut asks and they all look to Hiccup as maybe he already has an idea on how to handle this situation.
"We remove the debris lying on Toothless. Start from the top, that way we won't risk hurting him further. And someone hold that wood in his wing still, we can't risk moving that either. Fishlegs, keep an eye out for an opening to help. I'm going to stay here." He tells them swiftly. His part of the plan is not only to keep his dragon calm as he probably won't be getting up with that knee of his anyway. Not easily, at least. He might even be a detriment to Toothless' health if he tries to help out.
But the Riders agree with the plan and they get to it. Excluding Hiccup and Fishlegs, they still have a total of four pairs of hands to help all of that junk off Toothless.
They get to work and Hiccup looks down on his Bud, petting the top of his head with a smile.
"It's going to be okay soon, Toothless. We're here for you. We're going to get you out of here and fix that wing. Everything's going to be okay." Hiccup leans down and hugs the dragon's head, who lifts it and purrs knowingly.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
It took some doing to get Toothless out of that basement. First to get all that rubble off him without disturbing the object impaling him, then removing that object itself, and then they had to take care of that tear in his wing. And as wings tend to bleed profusely, it had to be done quickly.
After all of that was taken care of, Stormfly had to lift him out of there before they could search for a campsite to settle down in for the night.
And in the meantime, the Dragon Riders found out about Hiccup's once dislocated knee and that means they have two injured friends in their group.
But they found a nice place to stay in the form of a hotel with a lot of nice and big beds to rest in, certainly big enough for a Night Fury. Though this injury isn't nearly enough to stop him for long, flying won't be such a good idea for at least the next week or so. The good news is that dragons are fast healers.
The rest for tonight and tomorrow, it's merely to recover from the events of the day.
The doors of the hotel are big enough for a dragon Toothless' size to just fit through and he and Hiccup take one on the second floor. The Riders each have their own room on one of the upper floors, close to the Dragons, which have settled on the roof.
"Here it is, Bud! Our very own suite!" Hiccup tells his Bud, limping into the room with a crutch to aid him. He always has at least one with them ever since the loss of his leg. With his chronic pain, it's handy to have one with him for his bad days.
Toothless comes in with a rumble and looks around the room. It quickly becomes clear that he has little interest in anything present and swiftly climbs onto the bed. It's a miracle it can even hold him.
Hiccup lets out a chuckle and watches Toothless get comfortable, the frame creaking horribly all the way.
"Don't break it, Bud." He tells him, Toothless rumbling indignantly, but in a teasing manner.
He settles, bed groaning beneath him as he does, and Hiccup lets out a laugh when Toothless pats on a spot next to him with a paw.
Placing the crutch down on the ground by the bed, Hiccup gets on it and removes his shoes, deciding to leave his prosthetic on. It doesn't feel too pleasant on his knee to crawl up on the mattress to reach his dragon, but Hiccup manages and looks at his Bud.
"We made it. At least for today." He tells him with a smile, Toothless croons in agreement.
"I told you we would be there for you, didn't I?" Hiccup asks and pats him on the nose, which coaxes Toothless into laying his head on the human's uninjured knee. His smile widening, Hiccup pets him.
It's well past midnight by now and all they have for light is the moon, but there is still plenty of hours to go before the sun rises again. Until then, Toothless can rest and so can he.

Oh oh oh oh oH IDEA IDEA IDEACAAAKE WHAT IF I,, COMBINED THEM,,, DAZAI TICKLING ATSUSHI AND HE JUST, WITHOUT THINKING, IS LIKE “OSAMU STOOOPPP-“ AND THEN THEY BOTH FREEZE AND THEN. KISSES. Anyways! The fae probably like messing with him, but like. In ways that (they think) are relatively harmless, like replacing his furniture, or rearranging all of his books. But also they’re very protective of him, like an older sibling. (Nyanon, 1/5)
So I feel like, the moment anyone (Dazai) looks at Atsushi with heart eyes in their general vicinity, the admirer (Dazai) will be harassed. Not even with bets or deals, just. Magical fairy harassment. Atsushi just thinks they (he) pissed the fair folk off (again). Moving on, this is basically How Odasaku Decides to Commit Murder: The AU. No he doesn’t care that he’s stuck in a phone, he’ll figure something out. And oh yeah no definitely!!! (Nyanon, 2/5)
Atsushi is Babie and has never committed an (undeserved, looking at you Shibusawa-) murder, so even with research, he can’t know Everything. But Dazai is super smart! Of course he’d know a lot!!! Meanwhile Dazai is hiding the bloody knife he used to test one of Atsushi’s murder mysteries in the closet to clean it later and debating on whether or not he should introduce him to Ango and Oda. AND ITS SO CUTE PIKACHU IS SO FLUFFY AND FUNNY AND YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY WATCH IT!!! (Nyanon, 3/5)
But yeah that could definitely work! Like, maybe it’s Ranpo who turns into a Pikachu, and Atsushi is his best friend? And of course, even if neither of them know that Ranpo is Alive and Right There, Ranpo knows. He Knows. That he must tease this boy about his crush on the reporter with the Umbreon (or maybe Ninetales?). He feels it in his jellies. Also no you’re right the first time!!! Only Atsushi would be able to understand him, but everyone else can see him. (Nyanon, 4/5)
They just hear normal Pokéspeak, is all! Anyways, moving on again to another AU Concept (let me know if this gets tiring): Everyone is a dragon rider! So it’s kinda like the magical reserve, I guess? But no reserves, just everyone having a dragon that they’ve bonded with and stuff. Kinda like HTTYD, I guess? Or maybe Eragon? Does that make sense? Also I’m sorry if this entire thing is Short and Bad I am. So tired. (Nyanon, 5/5)
YES YESSS COMBINE EEEEMMMMMM DO ITTT- uh, i mean sure bro do whatever you want aha aha
ango and oda are probably constantly bringing atsushi up like “so,,,when do we get to meet this ‘kitten’ of yours?” and maybe another coworker (probably kunikida) is like “wait you werent talking about an actual kitten?”
UWUWU I DEFINITELY HAVE A TAB OPEN FOR IT RN SO ILL WATCH IT WHENEVER I HAVE TIME BRO ranpo being detective pikachu fits so well though oEGHJAJKEEKSJSDJS
NOOOOOOOO YOUR AUS ARE NEVER TIRING PLS I LOVE THEM SO FUCKING MUCH DUDE AND FU C K BROOO I L O V E HTTYD ESPECIALLY THE FIRST MOVIE BRO IT DO BE MY FAVOURITE FU C K MAN AAAA ATSUSHI GIVES OFF HICCUP VIBES; SCARED BEBE WHO BEFRIENDS A RARE BREED OF A DRAGON THATS FRIGHTINGLY STRONG BUT SOMEHOW MANAGES TO TAME THEM
please rest and take care of yourself bro thats the most important part never forget that SMH

So I calmed myself down a bit but I haven’t changed my mind, I still don’t really like it
So, I have to give credit where their is credit to give. Stoick looks fantastic, Gerard Butler is just Stoick the Vast, there’s no way around that and he also knows the character very well, so I think he will do a great job again. Nico Parker looks cute as Astrid. Also the dragons look decent to actually quite good, but they don’t fit very well with the real humans and, this probably the thing aside from being a unnecessary recreation, that ruined the forbidden friendship scene between LA Hiccup and CGI Toothless for me. The poster for the movie though looks great, I like the letters they choose with the strike class symbol and the silvery shimmer. I am just sad and angry that my favorite movie of all time gets remaked because Universal or DreamWorks want money so badly, I don’t care anymore honestly who’s in charge of this or come up with this. What also disappointed me in the trailer was, that it really gave the first expression of a shot to shot remake, I really hope it’s not and we will all be surprised by it and all the people who think this will be good, are hopefully right because even though I don’t like the Idea every much and think as myself as an young author in the making, that this is just creative bankruptcy. I don’t want it to suck either, because I really love the original trilogy and it’s TV-shows and comics and I was actually excited when this first was announced, it just gave at first a good feeling because DeBlois said at first it will be its own story and also John Powell was back as writer for the score. It just gave a good feeling at first because it was in good hands. And I know Dean DeBlois did the best he could and I think it was nice from him to come back and watch over it, to make sure they will do it right.
Will this ruin httyd for me? Of course not, it’s a remake at the end of the day, which is something if you don’t like or want to see it, you can still ignore it and watch the whole beautifully animated original story in instead. And also nothing in this rough world can destroy the love and admiration I feel for the original httyd-franchise. It’s my inspiration and my safe place. But I have to confess a unnecessary remake is at the end of the day better than a unnecessary sequel, which would ruin the flow of the story, like KFP4 did uncontrollably and sadly. But let’s just hope DreamWorks doesn’t make the next mistake after doing a live action remake in times were they are superior over Disney and Pixar in terms of the originality of their animated films and make it like the live action Disney movies. I really hope, they are smarter than this and I really really really hope, this was just a one hit wonder and DreamWorks will stay with its high quality animation and stories, even though they are in so much worry now because of their outsourcing their homemade animation. Let’s just hope and see what will happen next.

ROTBTD TAG GAME
Okay, so I was tagged by
@ohlooksheswriting-wips
! Thanks for tagging me!
Answer these questions and tag your rotbtd friends! And please don’t reblog this, put your answer in a new post 😊✨
Name/nickname?
My blogging name is Owlswing, but I also go by Owl :)
How did you get into rotbtd?
Oh, gosh... I was about 15...? Anyways, I liked all of the movies individually, and I ended up stumbling across some fanart of all four of them together, and then I saw tags like “the big four”, and the rest is kinda history. I got in deep on a dying fandom and never left...
What made you stay/come back?
Hahaha! See, fandom was dying/dead when I came around, so I never left. I just started a really long Hogwarts AU that is still not finished... (also after checking the timeline for the last question, I realized that said Hogwarts AU is almost 5 YEARS OLD! Maybe I should do something special for the anniversary???)
Out of the four movies, which one is your favorite?
I mean, I absolutely love them all, probably wouldn’t be in the fandom if I didn’t, but... I have to go with Httyd. Hiccup is just a really relatable character for me, and I just love the exhilarating feeling I get every single time I watch Test Drive. It’s just so beautiful.
Dreamworks Dragons or Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure?
You know, I think I need to go with Tangled Adventure on this one. While I love the Dragons series, I feel like Tangled did a really good job of staying true to the original characters while also adding more at the same time for more dynamic plots and such. I think it was just really well done, and there are no plotholes/awkward overlaps like there are sometimes in httyd (that could be because there are less movies so not as many toes to step on) but still, I think Tangled Adventures was really, really well done and I must give credit where credit is due! :)
Which one do you prefer to be made a sequel of, Brave or Rise of the Guardians?
It’s hard because I really want BOTH... I think I would prefer a remake of Brave with the original director, Brenda Chapman, because I feel like it would’ve been so much better if she hadn’t been taken off a project that was inspired by her own relationship with her daughter. Yeah. I’m still mad about that Disney.
But for overall sequel I would probably go with Rise of the Guardians. Brave seems like more of a stand-alone plot to me, so trying to shoe-horn in something else has high chances of being not so great *coughfrozen2cough*. Where as rotg has many characters with different legends and stories to be told, a whole book series to draw from, it’s a whole world that we’ve only explored one small part of, and I would’ve liked to see well-adjusted team dynamics/family-team antics of the guardians! :)
OTP/BrOTP(s)?
Ah, see I’m really NOT against any of the ships, I’m just not big on shipping in general. There are very few ships that I’m actually, ya know, Into. So I’m definitely more of a Brotp kinda gal. I love me some good, healthy, and strong friendships! Found Family? That’s my ish! Love that!
Favorite character(s)?
Hiccup. But there’s a special place for each of them. I’ve seen myself in each of them and nothing can really replace that feeling.
Favorite AU(s)?
Okay, I gotta say Hogwarts AU cause I’m chin-deep in that right now. Soon to be drowning. Simultaneously the best and worst decision of my life. Haha! Just kidding! Anyways, I like this AU because I’m really big on fantasy, and it just makes sense; why four people from completely different walks of life ended up in the same place at the same time? I think it’s pretty cool and it’s such a big world to explore!
Besides that... I would say a War AU could be cool, like medieval fantasy or futuristic sci-fi. Pirate AUs and Circus AUs will also always catch my attention.
Pick one! favorite B4 house placement in Hogwarts AU? | favorite B4 nation/bending headcanons in ATLA AU?
Okay, so for Hogwarts Houses I definitely have preferred Houses, but the whole system is so generalizing to begin with I really believe that any of the four could be in pretty much any house if you really want, but here are my preferences:
Hiccup - Ravenclaw
Rapunzel - Hufflepuff
Merida - Gryffindor
Jack - Slytherin
As for bending headcannons, I really haven’t put a lot of thought into it, but that question is very intriguing... I’d probably do something like...
Hiccup - Air, because the peaceful Nomad lifestyle and the desire to fly and explore and be free is just very fitting. Also he could befriend Toothless instead of a Bison, confusing everyone because they thought Dragons were dangerous!
Rapunzel - Earth, because for one thing I love breaking norms in this way! I love the idea of Rapunzel being the dainty, pretty princess but then she busts out some of the most badass Earth Bending moves, invents metal bending to escape Gothel, is just very kind but if you piss her off she’ll totally wreck you. I think this would be A LOT of fun. Also, I think it would be fitting with the whole “flower” thing. I also think it could be an interesting character arc where she’s not very good because her personality doesn’t exactly fit the “traditional earth bender attitude” and being raised by Gothel (”You? A bender! Oh, honestly Rapunzel, don’t make me laugh!”) could leave a lot of insecurities that she would have to grow and work through. I think it could be really beautiful.
Merida - Fire, on the flip side this one is kinda typical I imagine, but I would say (also on the flip side) make her afraid of it. Make it the one thing that Merida isn’t, well, Brave about. She doesn’t like fire bending. It could potentially make her a disgrace to her royal/noble family. It also would explain why she’s so good with a bow and sword: she chooses weapons over bending. Unlike Rapunzel who wants to learn but is hindered and must overcome, Merida would be against learning and would eventually have to learn that it is a part of her and learn how to accept it (after possibly visiting the dragons with Hiccup or whoever the avatar would be cause who the heck knows? could be interesting if none of the Four are the Avatar. Make a fifth character the Avatar and the Four could just be the teachers...)
Jack - Water, obvious, I know, but giving Jack ice powers AND another element makes him WAY to OP. I would say Jack is actually not a natural at water bending. He’s always accidentally freezing everything! (not unlike Katara). He has to work hard and earn his title as a master, eventually becoming the best because he trained harder than any of the others and surpassed the other water benders that used to torment him back in his home village! I also think Blood Bending could be an interesting plot device here (maybe Jack is tempted to use the technique because he’s worked so hard and still isn’t good enough? Or just in general Jack’s inner battle between the darkness and his fun-loving personality...)
......Dang it. I think I just started plotting something. o_o
Pick one! since this is 2020, any hot takes you want to give us? | what old fanon tropes that you still enjoyed to this day?
I will always love brotp between Jack and Hiccup! Absolute favorite. I also love the idea of the four having sleepovers and telling each other everything and overall being supportive and loving towards each other. All the positivity and fluff!
Any fic recs? Or if you couldn’t think of any, what was the last rotbtd fanfiction that you read? (It could be an old work or a recent one, do share!)
Uh... I honestly haven’t been reading many as I barely have time to write, but I did hear of one that I think is pretty good! It’s a pokemon AU by Acecove! I’ll link it below...
https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13320856/1/Pok%C3%A9mon-World-Evolving-Together
Whew! That was a lot! Anyways, I’ll tag @emixa26 and @adaminaart!

RIDERS OF BERK | HTTYD SERIES | BREAKING DOWN HICCUP
Blog Post Series : Breaking Down Hiccup
Title : In Dragons we Trust | Alvin and the Outcasts
Ep/Season : Episode 5 & 6, Season 1 (Riders of Berk)
Premise(s) :
Mildew sets out get rid of the dragons. As usual. Alvin the Treacherous, a long term enemy of Berk has now ceased the opportunity to appear and kidnap the dragon conqueror for himself, much to his surprise.
THE OPENING SCENE
The opening sequence of Episode 5 is cathartic. When Hiccup free falls, there is such freedom and release. He glides in the air with such ease. The artistic direction of the show is refined. Hiccup is the bravest in the sky, and ironically, somewhat uncomfortable on land. He is himself with Toothless, or in a better way put - more himself. But without Toothless, he is always placed in a position of finding himself.

Episode 5 and 6 is exactly that. We know that Mildew’s scheme to get rid of the dragons succeeds at the end of Episode 5. And Hiccup is now looking for an opportunity to get Toothless back and bring him home. The struggle now begins as Hiccup has to find his strength in the absence of his best friend.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
HICCUP HORRENDOUS HADDOCK III
At the start of Episode 5, we are made aware of the dynamic of Hiccup in the village. There is now no disputing that he is Stoic’s heir. I’d like to think that the village was worried having Hiccup as chief initially. He’s scrawny, tiny, couldn’t/wouldn’t kill a dragon. He didn’t fit the Viking mould. Even Stoic was concerned. But after the battle with the Red Death, no one can fault Hiccup’s stubbornness and bravery. His courage was unmatched. His compassion greater than the scale of his measure and his understanding even larger.

So, when we go into Riders of Berk, Hiccup is undisputedly next in line. This is reflected in what Stoic tells Hiccup in Episode 5 “all eyes are upon you son, whatever those beast do reflects on you AND whatever you do reflects on ME.”
RELATIONSHIP DYNAMIC
FATHER-SON & CHIEF
Hiccup is trying to prove himself. And while Stoic has done better after the events of the 1st movie, in terms of parenting, he still struggles to divide his position as chief and his role as father. This context is often a topic when we follow a storyline involving royalties and their heirs.
Stoic doesn’t want to disappoint his son, but he must also protect his village, which is allegedly being ruined by something his son loves the most and believes are innocent.
The question of trust is still a running theme between father and son.
And the notion of whether Hiccup is a worthy leader hangs lightly in the air.
The living situation between dragons and Vikings is still precarious.
HICCUP X ASTRID

I can’t not talk about them. When Hiccup was contemplating the series of unfortunate events, he starts to believe that Mildew set everything up. After they leave the dragons on Dragon Island, Astrid, sad and upset looks for him. I notice that the two of them, in the earlier days of friendship, often sought each other for support (as they will continue to do into their relationship).
At the same time, Hiccup confides in Astrid the possibility of Mildew’s treason. She has always been his voice of reason. A great listener. She doesn’t nudge him towards the impulsive but is wise in her counsel, letting him make his own decisions, but reminding him to calculate them. We know they grew up together, but the grew together as well, if you get what I’m saying.

This reminds of the final movie, when Gobber pesters Astrid to marry him. It is because he knows that Astrid makes Hiccup better. Even Valka acknowledges that he listens to her. There will always be a Hiccup and Astrid.
HICCUP V ALVIN THE TREACHEROUS
Alvin the Treacherous (voiced by Mark Hamill might I add 🙌🏼) is Hiccup’s first enemy. I get that Mildew might be considered the first, but he wasn’t a real threat to Berk (yet).

Something Hiccup proves very well, is that he is brave. He isn’t stupidly audacious, like Snotlout, who when push comes to shove might run away from the challenge (though arguably Snotlout gets better towards the end).
He is also very clever. He chooses his battles and uses psychology to outwit his enemies, instead of brute strength, which most of them would have more than him anyways.
HEROIC STORY LINES
UNDERRATED ROMANTIC | CHIVALRY AIN’T DEAD

Hiccup heroically shows up just when Astrid needs him. I love these little touches. Hiccup continues to prove himself to be nothing like “Stoic’s little embarrassment.”
Hiccup tries to trick Alvin. Astrid catches on quickly (proving their inward connection) and plays along w his plan. We know that this rouse may not fly if it was put against the twins or Snotlout, who may not get the idea immediately and Fishlegs would be too nervous to act it out well.
HICCUP’S BRAVERY
Was it stupid to let Alvin take him hostage? Yes, but Hiccup was unafraid. And didn’t even flinch while captive. He grows a lot in these two episodes. I love that his size holds no comparison to his courage.
BATTLE STRATEGY IMPROVES
While Alvin will prove to be a lesser evil than the demons that will soon chase him in later seasons, Hiccup and the way he manoeuvres Toothless on the battle field will improve and match up w the evil at hand. The turns he makes when battling Alvin is a little clumsy and out of touch, but this will change as he practices and progresses in the story. I like that they made it look that way, as opposed to Hiccup just naturally knowing how to fight w Toothless by his side. I appreciate the growth they’re trying to lay out here.
Likewise, the way the riders work as a team will also progress. The other’s seemingly irrelevant rattlings will prove useful, and Hiccup will learn to be a leader, team player and friend to them and they to him.
CONCLUSION
I loved how Stoic faced off Alvin. Punishing him for taking Hiccup. Which shows off his tenacity, strength and love for his son.
I like how though Mildew wasn’t outed, he didn’t need to be. It’s like a lesson in “things don’t always work out the way you want it to and justice isn’t always served independent of evidence". But when you do the right thing, things will workout, and that’s exactly what happened.
I love that at the end of the episodes, the village cheered on the dragon riders sparking on a desire to let them stay and tolerate a free roaming dragon city.
