I am not one for multi-person ships and also don’t ship loolilalu x martha as they haven’t met, and likely wouldn’t (though if they did, I can see them bonding over being NPCs, and it would then probably be one of the best ships in the fandom). Each to their own! But that’s just me and my preference.

I think friendship that doesn’t lead to romance is underrepresented in most fandoms so even though ragatha x pomni (funnydoll? Pomnatha? edit: the tumblr suggested tags have told me “ragapom”) is my favourite TADC ship, part of me would be upset if it became canon.

Something I haven’t seen discussed as often when people talk about Tumblr’s usability issues:

Why does blog view not have hard-coded page numbers?

Part of the joy of Tumblr is that if you really enjoy someone’s blog, it can feed you for days. Years’ worth of goodies they posted, found and reblogged over the years, some at risk of being lost to time if you hadn’t stumbled across them again... It fosters this sense of exploration, like a “what’ll I find next?!” type of attitude that makes you keep on scrolling. And if you have to take a break, you can always go back to (theirblog).tumblr.com/page/134 and continue where you left off.

But with blog view... you can’t. There are no page numbers. If you hit next page, the URL doesn’t change, and Tumblr doesn’t remember where you left off. One accidental refresh, one browser crash, one Windows update, one misclick, and you’re back to page one, even if you were hundreds of pages in. How deep were you? Where did you leave off? Unless you want to brave the archive, you’ll never know(and the archive won’t help you get back on track). It’s honestly easier to just give up and find another blog to scroll through.

The sad part is I don’t even necessarily hate blog view; it can be a bit more sleek than some cluttered custom themes(even though I love custom themes!) and personally I think it makes finding tags easier. But web view isn’t on by default anymore, so a lot of newer blogs just. Don’t have page numbers. it feels like you aren’t supposed to spend time looking through people’s blogs anymore. On the spend time looking through people’s blogs website.

That sucks :/

As someone who doesn’t use Twitter and hasn’t used it since 2016, at this point I feel like every even slightly Twitter-esque (let alone overt Twitter-esque) design choice Tumblr makes gets yelled about because People Really Just Fucking Hate Twitter whether they realise it or not.

Which, like. Fair ‘nuff. I also hate Twitter, which is why I don’t use it. But nobody ever really gives these design decisions any time to percolate on this site in favour of kneejerk “they changed it and we hate it” reaction. Public likes are not new. Multiple tabs on a dashboard (some of them not things you opted into seeing) are not new. Having to block ads with external tools is not new (and it’s a big deal that photomatt said the words “ad blocker”, like, you couldn’t get that shit on any other profit-driven site, everyone is too scared for their precious monetisation)

The new sidebar, also, I think is pretty ugly right now but it’s probably going to go through a few iterations. I, personally, really wish they’d put the search bar literally anywhere else (maybe group search and discovery together IDK I’m not an UX designer) and I think accessing sideblogs has been too complicated for a while now, but none of those are the same as “this looks like The Other Blue Site”.

Like I’m not a graphic designer. I am certainly not a fucking UX designer, and I think those people are either all nuts or all geniuses. I’m pretty sure the new layout is being extensively heatmapped rn, and what changes it’ll undergo are gonna be done based on that, based on comments that are along the lines of ‘this change would make me more productive’ and less on “WEEEEEH CHANGE IT BACK CHANGE IT BACK CHANGE IT BACK”. 

Your animosity towards change is not meaningful user experience information. You misclicking on shit more *is*. If this layout is really *that* bad and terrible, Automattic’s research tools will demonstrate it as such. The developers now are actually much better versed in Web 2.0 design, for better and for worse.

Assholes don’t just wake up one morning and decide “I think I’m going to admit that I fucked up and try to make amends”. They need a catalyst for that. For Endeavor, it was finally achieving the dream he never thought he’d accomplish, that he’s been chasing so relentless he was willing to tear his whole family apart for just so he could live it vicariously through his youngest son. For that one ex-nazi whose story still gets passed around in Tumblr, it was a misclick. For the shrimp guy whose story still gets passed around, it was his pet shrimp dying. Even Zuko, who spent months building up to his redemption, still needed a catalyst to push him onto the hero’s side.

Honestly, back in october I thought that Lunar would be Eclipses catalyst so to speak. I was honestly kinda disappointed he wasn't. That's where the evil but redeemable au of mine came from.

Biases for tumblr polls off the top of my head for fun:

Selecting for

- followers of your blog or their followers (and so on); e.g., people who likely already agree with you or are interested in your interests in at least one aspect

- online within a certain time window (depends on how long people scroll on their dash and how many posts the people they follow make)

- answers which grab people’s attention (usually the first, last, and funniest answers)

- topics interesting enough to engage (preventing scrolling past)

- relatedly, people interested in responding at the time they see the poll

- Intentional misclicks; choosing incorrect or less correct options because an answer is funny or interesting

- whatever the recent reblogger is advocating for; in MCYT, whichever character they want to win a sexyman bracket, for example

Further issues:

- buttons are close together and misclicks cannot be undone

- choices are limited; broad categories with more than 12 options may need to be condensed or combined

- only a binary choice system (yes/no) with one choice; no multiple answers or ranking, and no view results button that doesn’t inherently skew the poll

- polls are not written to reduce bias; the poll writer themself may accidentally or intentionally bias answers to make one more or less attractive. For example, “I use Tumblr live”, “I don’t care about Tumblr Live”, and “I would never touch Tumblr live in a million years” as answer options would skew answers towards the last option, either because they feel obliged to agree due to pressure or because it’s funny. 

- users may be able to check what a person’s answer is, which may pressure responders to pick an option that’s more neutral or agreeable to OP or the reblogger

- you cannot see the number of actual respondents per choice with Tumblr’s interface alone, meaning another program or extra work without instructions is needed to analyze results

- users can comment on results in the post itself, meaning that users do not actually answer a blind poll, which may further bias results based on how the respondent thinks other people answered

Tumblr users generally do not approach a poll with the goal of providing accurate, unbiased data, even if the poll writer does (and they often don’t). Furthermore, even if a poll breaks containment, a large portion of initial respondents will be followers of, or in the circles of interest of, the original poster.

Let's consider the sampling bias of a classic polling method: the telephone survey.

In many jurisdictions, robo-calling cell phone numbers is illegal, so right off the jump, our sample is limited to people with landlines.

Second, our survey's calling centre probably doesn't operate 24/7, and you can only answer a home landline when you're at home, so we're also selecting for people who tend to be at home during our calling centre's office hours.

Third, most people who have landlines probably also have answering services and caller ID, so we're additionally selecting for people who answer unknown numbers rather than letting them go to the machine.

Fourth, our recipient needs to be able to participate in the survey, so we're also selecting for people who speak the language(s) in which the survey is being administered.

Finally, after all this, most people will just hang up once they figure out they're being polled, so in sum, we're selecting for people who:

have landlines;

are usually at home during our calling centre's office hours;

customarily answer unknown numbers;

Any one of these factors is likely to introduce very serious bias into our results; all of them taken together are going to render our data practically meaningless for most purposes.

Now, understand that this still represents less selection bias than trying to do demographic surveys by reblogging Tumblr polls.

I didn’t look that hard into the community labels thing bc I Don’t Care, if I don’t wanna see shlong and glussy I will simply Block but. BUT OHHH my god this is. SO Horribly designed.

This is the meatball menu options on an individual tumblr post on their mobile app. If I go to copy the link and I misclick the community label request, it automatically marks it for review. It does not let the individual user explain why they think it should need a community label. It doesn’t allow the individual user to undo or reverse the request.

The fact that it’s phrased like a question is especially shitty! Why would I, as a user, assume that it marks it for review?? I’d expect this kind of menu option to bring me to a page or menu explaining what community labels are for, and then maybe it gives me a question: “Does this post need a community label?” with a yes/no radio button answer, and if I select “yes” I get checkboxes for a list of reasons why I think it needs a mature label. It doesn’t do any of that.

I hate web design, I’m never ever doing it, however I would love to be hired as the monkey who enters tumblr’s web design and throws everything that isn’t hammered down across the room. Fix your shit or I’ll do it again and you’ll have to keep paying me.

Like I said here and probably in several other places, I don’t think the people at Drawfee are horrid antisemites. I think a couple of them have very open hearts and a good intentions and the same level of unexamined antisemitism that most non-Jewish people have. Karina and Julia are not uniquely awful. Karina and Julia are probably more kind and thoughtful than most people talking about this conflict right now.

That doesn’t mean they’ll always say the right thing or do the right thing. But knowing that they don’t intend to cause harm and that they care about remedying harm matters much, much more than the fact that they made the error in the first place.

I love Drawfee. I want to continue loving Drawfee.

This was not a post meant to shame anyone into doing what I wanted. This was simply a post with me finding media that handled stuff sensitively enough that I’m not feeling the constant horror of antisemitism everywhere. It’s a tough time right now. Thanks so much to [TUMBLR USER REDACTED] for pointing out that Karina unliked those tweets. It matters a lot!!!!

Nobody is perfect.

In an ideal world, yes. Drawfee would make some acknowledgment that antisemitism is on the rise. But I don’t know these people. It’s not my job or my right to ask them to do anything for me. All I can do is help others who are as affected by the ongoing crisis as me.

And, in case anyone wants to turn this very normal internet interaction into a weird witch hunt against Jews: I was not trolling Karina’s tweets for information the attack. I was scrolling what I thought was the “media” tab on her profile cuz I misclicked and saw that tweet from the Super Bowl time. I noped out real quick and went to Julia’s (and everyone else’s page) to see if this was something they’d all been liking or sharing (cuz I don’t go on Twitter much anymore). It wasn’t, so I just determined that Drawfee was not safe for me (and people looking for escapism in the same way as me) based on that info—I did not set out to condemn all of the crew, who I adore.

Antisemitism is endemic to our society. It is so familiar it is almost invisible unless you live being victimized by it. People are gonna eff up. What matters is that they fix their mistakes as best they can.

Right now, im in the same boat as I was when I made my first iteration of this post: if they can manage to keep the livestream free of antisemitism (or at least avoid contributing to antisemitic sentiment and put effort into keeping the chat free of antisemitism) then I’m more than happy to keep subscribing. It’s my comfort show. Their vibes are stellar. They always try to do good.

Again, it would be super if they actually condemned antisemitism. It’s not my place to ask that they do that, though. They’ll handle things how they wanna handle them, and I’ll determine based on my own needs if I feel comfortable engaging. Because I DO support Palestinian freedom and equality and equal access to healthcare and all that good stuff!

But I need to know that when people say “free Palestine” they aren’t unintentionally adding a silent “from Jews” to the end of that sentence. It’s a hard time right now. Compassion goes a long way.

   the new tumblr update

   is dumb

   Not just from a “urgh this is new and i’ll have to get used to iiiit” point of view.

The infinite scroll is now just, permanent, you can’t turn it off, i went to my setting and looked it over, again and again because i hate infinite scroll.    Infinite scroll is dumb because if you misclick while browsing and enter a new site/different part of tumblr, when you go back you will end up at the start.

   is it a dumb complaint? probably, but i should not have to actively be cautious with how i click on a site because i don’t want to go somewhere because it might mean i can’t check out what others posted.

   Another weird thing they changed, is that you can no longer right.click the reblog button and say “open in new tab”.    I noticecd this because of how I do tumblr, which is opening everything i wanna reblog in a new tab, which i can no longer do.    I don’t get why they changed that, at all. 

   The notifications now also light up the little lightning bolt at the top, putting up a number like they would with Asks or Messages.    It’s distracting, makes you think people wanna talk to ya, and it’s not necessary.

all in all, i haven’t seen anything that’s improved my experience on tumblr.

For those curious.

I will only unfollow people for three reasons: 

1. Said follower unfollows.  This can be with or without a reason given. I may end up poking them but if I don’t get a reply, I just unfollow seeing as it may be they are no longer interested in RPing with Bast. 

2. The blog has not updated in over a month.  There are some exceptions such as I know the blog is on hiatus or know the person personally and aware they are busy. 

3. The person is being a dick. This rare but I will first talk to the person before unfollowing. 

I will not unfollow for petty reasons. I’m a grown ass adult that won’t just let their emotions go away with them.  There has to be a reason I unfollow.  If you reach out asking why I unfollow, I will either tell you or tumblr decided to glitch again and will immediately re-follow. 

If you think I unfollowed you in error: TALK TO ME. Sometimes tumblr does glitch out or I may have misclicked (I do sometimes fall asleep with tumblr open and may unfollow--and yes it has happened before).  So let me know. I’m very open to talk to people and am not shy to be blunt when it is needed.
