I’ve only just finished reading the Manga Is Love the Answer and I strongly recommend it as an introductory text. It goes into way more detail than a lot of other coming out aspec tales, covering microlabels, questioning and alternate relationship structures. TW for SA though.

I just finished reading the manga Is Love the Answer? by Uta Isaki and oh my god
I am not articulate enough to fully explain how much I love this but I will try
I honestly didn't think it would hit me so hard but seeing a character figure out that shes aroace was so.. nice
the story didn't invalidate it at all and even talked about some of the bs people say abt aroacespec people (you just need to try it, you're a prude, etc.)
and the protagonist is genderqueer too!
it was just really super nice seeing a character I could almost fully relate to when it comes to sexual/gender orientation
and! and! the story addresses how sexuality and gender is fluid and labels aren't all-encompassing
like it explicitly says not every ace person has the same experience!!! there are many facets to asexuality!!!!! (and this applies to other orientations too!!)
omg and theres also a moment where the protagonist realizes she feels some kind of attraction to a fictional character (but not exactly romantic) and holy crap I FELT THAT
and I felt SO VALIDATED when that happened
cuz I have my fictional not-quite-crushes and sometimes I wonder if that make me not ace but no! I still am!!
I didn't realize how much I needed aroace representation until I read this, and now I sorely wish there was more
or at the very least I hope more people (queer or not) find and read more stories like this
I wish there was more understanding between people when it comes to this
goodness this made me so emotional sorry for the long post but seriously go read Is Love the Answer?

Welp, just read Is Love The Answer? and it is now going to be my go to manga to throw at people's faces when explaining the ace spectrum.
Tumblr media
The feeling of being an alien because you aren't on the same sexual/romantic wavelengths as everyone else, the sense of relief you feel when you find out there are other people like you and the worry that you might not fit into a particular brand of asexual. All of it just hits so home to my personal experience coming to terms with my asexuality.
Between having multiple ace/aro characters on different ends of the ace spectrum, the way the manga repeatedly makes the point that the ace spectrum is very nonconforming and fluid and that you don't need to play up or downplay your attractions to fit in the identity, this might be the most "I wish I had a time machine to give this to my past self" manga I've ever read. It would have def made my younger self's life a lot easier...
All of this while being a single 6 chapter volume that you can read all of in less than an hour. It's an easy recommend to everyone from me.

Okay but that one part of Is Love The Answer where Chika mediates a discussion between a couple that are upset with each other because one thinks the other has cheated, and her being aroace allows her to be the first to recognize the problem is that they have different (and conflicting tbh) ideas about what constitutes cheating, what violates the terms of a monogamous romantic and sexual relationship, what they’re okay with and not okay with when it comes to that, and they hadn’t communicated those to each other beforehand, and at the end of the discussion the couple decides to break up but there are a lot less hard feelings all around than there otherwise would have been >>>>>>>>>>>>>>
