Poets partying
(Bohemian Tea Party, Woodberry Poetry Room)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Christina Davis gives a speech about the poetry room's activities + I am caught close-eyed catching up with poet Fanny Howe + selfie with poet and Woodberry fellow Rosa Alcalá for our mutual friends.
Poets grieving
(Memorial for Ukrainian writer and poet Victoria Amelina)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A moving night of readings, remembrances, and reflections on war and the Ukrainian literary community. Also ran into Fanny again (3 times in 5 days--I forgot how much I missed seeing Fanny at all things poetry & film related in Boston/Cambridge).
Tumblr media
Ukrainian poet Iryna Shuvalova's reading and speech was utterly devastating.
Poets reading and translating
(Kim Hyesoon reading with translator Don Mee Choi, introduced by poet and translator Jack Jung)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Was deviously thrilled to get this pic of Jack that also captured Don Mee snapping Jack's photo. Don Mee read her English translations of Kim Hyesoon's poems.
Tumblr media
The queen herself, Kim Hyesoon!
Tumblr media
I've been a Kim Hyesoon and Don Mee Choi fan for over a decade, so this reading was a real treat for me. Could not pass up the opportunity to buy this gorgeous signed broadside, which tickles my bird-woman fancy!

same tak ya y khotila b hovoryty
yak spalakh nichnoho vohnyu nad morem
yak zhinka shcho spivaye iduchy vulytseyu p‘yana
tak nache nikhto ne chuye
tilʹky boh
this is how I want to speak
like a flash of fire on the sea in the night
like a woman singing drunk in the street
as though no one can hear
but god

European Writers' Festival, il 18 e 19 maggio alla British Library
Tumblr media
... Continua a leggere su

a moving grove
By Iryna Shuvalova
Translated from the Ukrainian by Uilleam Blacker
go escape while you can go escape
buy tickets for the last water train
which as it subsides reveals
curbs pavements the riverside
the anatomy of the sinewy city that lies
naked and unfamiliar like a man in your bed
go—escape while you can
take all your belongings
everything that’s yours
split lips cut knees
the cracked jar of a head from which
memory slowly seeps and all you can
leave just leave behind
the evening lights in the windows
the beloved exposed throat of the sky
the smell of the subway the lead of the river
go and don’t come back have no doubts that’s how it is
to fall into the bottomless well of a body
to throw yourself like a comb over your shoulder
to sow yourself across a field so that a host
of warriors might grow
this is how the needle passes
through the needle’s eye this is how the forest
shall come up to the walls
and start to tremble

into the sweet orchard
you will go, woman, into the sweet orchard a bone through a throat a chunk of clay that melts slowly burying yourself in the dark pond of his body
you’ll go as if into a river first—a large fish with a white belly full of dreams second—a bloody berry a closed fist full of bitter seeds third—an empty jar with a narrow neck full of song
each time you enter you won’t have a name each time you enter you’ll carry a mouthful of names you’ll swallow them beyond the gates so that again you won’t have any so that you can return
Iryna Shuvalova, translated from the Ukrainian by Olena Jennings

You Deserve More
by Iryna Shuvalova, 2020
sometimes the light shifts and folds up
like a tablecloth the kids hide under
a membrane that something trembles behind
the sensitive innards of their secret world where
the world lasts forever
airy agile unchanging
(Translated from the Ukrainian by Anand Dibble.)

i really enjoy doing book covers, so i thought i'd drag a few of my favorites that i've done over the last few years from deep in the vaults...this one is a lovely little chapbook of the poetry of Iryna Shuvalova, a Ukrainian poet whom i had the pleasure of meeting, a truly wonderful person, as well as a master of her art...
