Well, this is quite the stunning fellow.
Meet Irura bidenticulata, a spectacular, purple-and-gold jumping spider.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at that purple sheen!!
It’s a pretty small spider, at around 6mm long. This species was once thought to belong in the genus Simaetha, and in an 2011 paper finally describing the spider, it was found that it belonged in the genus Irura, and thus Irura bidenticulata.
They seem to be found in Southeast Asia and Southeastern China, but never seem to be common anywhere, except, for this little paradise known as Hong Kong. From April to May, I got to meet these little beauties many times on Hong Kong Island.

Curious enough, all of these that I found happen to be males. Females tend to be gold and black, and fluffy pedipalps. I was hoping to breed them someday, but I never got to find a female.
When June came along, I was actually quite sad to no longer find them. They are my absolute favourite arachnids and I doubt much could top them.
Hope everyone learnt something new today, and have a little more appreciation for the tiny critters around us (:

Irura bidenticulata, commonly known as the purple-gold jumping spider, is a species of salticid. As the name implies, while females tend to take on a more dull coloration, males are characterized by their striking, shiny magenta-gold patterned bodies. Found in Thailand.

please don’t give up! life can be so beautiful. today i saw a picture of the most wondrous spider (irura bidenticulata). there are the atrocities but you can talk to your family and friends. also sometimes there is a little creature
thank you so much <3 <3
i'm deeply dedicated to being kind and the change i want to see in the world but sometimes i get really sad at how people treat each other, y'know? it's a bit hard for me to deal with. but it'll be okay! <3

made another one. their name is Denise, and they were bitten by a radioactive Irura bidenticulata. before becoming Spider-Violet, it used to work as a child entertainment. (their bubbly, upbeat personality made it the perfect job. plus they had always loved kids!) their fangs didn’t appear after the bite; it’s a genetic condition. the bite, however, made them poisonous.
After their canon event, Denise decided to leave her workplace due to the fear of possibly hurting the children it worked with. They gave their life a new purpose, and started helping out the city. It sometimes happens to stumble upon the kids they used to work with, and that gives them an insane amount of joy. It likes to think of itself as a sort of guardian angel for them.
Random fun fact; They can talk, though the fangs give them a lisp.
