Gramatical gender in Irish is so interesting.
For the most part, the same terms are used for men and women, nouns are the same, the only different thing is the definitive article.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In most gendered languages, male is the default (Eg: my friends in Spanish for a group containing 9 women and 1 man uses the masculine version of the word friend) but Irish doesn’t really work that way.
Nothing about a noun also doesn’t tell you it’s gender, you just kinda have to know.

I want to try something here, so if you're an american, especially one who values irish culture, read this.
So, for those of you who aren't aware, there's a rap group here in Ireland called kneecap. They're pretty fucking good on their own, but they're probably best known for being easily the most authentic, skilled, and cheeky rappers usung the irish language. You may know them from the time they put stickers up in the British museum
Tumblr media
They've done great things for the language and we should thank them as a nation, but that's not what we're here to talk about
Recently, kneecap got their own movie
Tumblr media
This is extremely important. Ireland has a cinema industry, but none of our stuff ever competes in American markets, even when it's done undisputably well, and gets critical acclaim
This film is incredibly important to irish culture today, and I'm not just saying that. With all the American media we're force-fed and the erosion of our native language it means so much to have a movie about the irish language without it being a novelty, even one which is mostly in English. If you're an American reading this, I beg you to do whatever you can to spread this movie. Support it for the academy award it's been nominated for, tell your friends about it, watch it legally if you can find it to drive up engagement, watch it illegally if you can't, and perhaps the biggest one of all:
If you're up to it I want you to call your local cinema and ask them to play it. Franchises might not agree, but I know America still has independent cinemas, or even ones with a lot of freedom in local management, so please, if you can get them to show this film it could work wonders for the preservation and representation of irish culture, something that is desperately needed in a time when samboism is one of our biggest industries
Shit, even if you want to rewrite this post, I know I'm not the best communicator, go ahead, just make sure the word gets out. Send to all
Besides, it is genuinely a great film. I saw it the other day with my boyfriend and I already want to rewatch it

Americans will joke about the famine, call gaeilge “simlish”, insult our dancing, berate our food, trivialise the oppression we went through, call us colonisers, mock our accents, make drinks mocking our very real trauma, erase and appropriate our culture, call us drunks and alcoholics, and put out countless pieces of media perpetuating stereotypes made about us during our genocide, and wonder why we hate them.

And you dare to call me a terrorist,
while you look down your gun.
When I think of all the deeds that you have done.
You have plundered many nations,
divided many lands,
you have terrorized their peoples
you ruled with an iron hand!
And you brought this reign of terror to my land
-The Wolfe Tones, Joe McDonnell.

I just want to write something about the political situation in Northern Ireland- I don’t want to speak for Irish people, but I think it’s important people who live in Britain take an interest and understand what’s going on.
Under the terms of the Good Friday Agreement, Northern Ireland is meant to have devolution, with it’s own parliament. There’s a strict agreement about powersharing between the parties.
In the last 6 years, Northern Ireland has had a functioning parliament for two of them. This is largely due to the DUP blocking the formation of a cabinet that doesn’t serve their interests. The liberal ideal of “just vote” isn’t working.
One of the more recent and significant events are that in 2022, the DUP first minister resigned due to Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal- a Brexit deal which very clearly disregarded the Good Friday Agreement, and Northern Ireland in general. This essentially caused the dissolution of the parliament and led to elections in May 2022.
For the first time, Sinn Fein won the most seats, meaning the first minister would be someone from the party. But the DUP were unhappy, and refused to participate in the election of a speaker, meaning the government could not function. Due to the DUP’s behaviour, just like from 2017-2020, there’s currently no NI assembly. And it seems like the DUP know if they just hold out long enough, they’ll force another election.
And presumably they’ll keep doing this until they get the result they want.
People tell us to “just vote”. Well, the people of Northern Ireland did vote, and the party in power refused to relinquish their interests. Meanwhile, catholic republican communities continue to be discriminated against in all sorts of ways- including by the police. The police, furthermore, are a symbol (and a practical force) of Britain’s colonial occupation of Northern Ireland.
Against this backdrop, what other recourse do young Irish people have but violence?

The Man Was All Shot Through
The Man Was All Shot Through by Liam MacGabhann
The man was all shot through that Came today into the Barrack Square And a soldier I, i am not proud to say That we killed him there They brought him from the prison hospital and To see him in that chair I swear his smile would Would far more quickly call a man to prayer Maybe, maybe I don't understand this thing That makes these rebels die Yet all men love freedom and the Spring clear in the sky I wouldn't do this deed again for All that I hold by as I gazed down my rifle At his breast but then, then a soldier I They say he was different, kindly too Apart from all the rest A lover of the poor his wounds ill dressed He faced us like a man Who knew a greater pain Than blows or bullets ere the world Began: died he in vain Ready, present, and him just smiling Christ I felt my rifle shake His wounds all open and around his Chair a pool of blood i swear his lips said "fire" before my rifle shot That cursed lead And I, I was picked to kill a man like that
James Connolly
