Gramatical gender in Irish is so interesting.
For the most part, the same terms are used for men and women, nouns are the same, the only different thing is the definitive article.

In most gendered languages, male is the default (Eg: my friends in Spanish for a group containing 9 women and 1 man uses the masculine version of the word friend) but Irish doesn’t really work that way.
Nothing about a noun also doesn’t tell you it’s gender, you just kinda have to know.

OKAY LISTEN UP ALLA YIZ
listen to Motherfocloir, especially the Pop up Gaeltacht episode
https://audioboom.com/channel/motherfocloir
also listen to The Irish Passport, especially episode 3 The Irish Language
https://theirishpassport.com/podcast/episode-3-the-irish-language/
It’s just shit because when I say “I miss Irish” it isn’t even like I miss the language, I miss what the language /should/ be. I don’t mean I miss it being crammed down our throats to the point where we all resent it and I don’t mean I miss it so I’m going to go off on my own and learn it. I just miss it because it isn’t /mine/. It really, really isn’t. I wasn’t born into speaking it and we don’t get taught it well at all so grasping at a language always just out of reach is almost worse than not having it all. It’s even hard to explain but god, to lose a language and everything that went with it is just, heartbreaking. So to say we’re exaggerating when we say that we are in genuine, constant mourning of our language isn’t much of an understatement, even if I didn’t realise that properly until I was older.

As someone from the north of Ireland, I am arguably more Irish than a lot of you xenophobic southerners. I’m Irish because it’s the very soul of my being, I am nothing if I’m not Irish it’s what runs through my very veins. You’re Irish because you were born in Irish soil, you’ve never struggled for your Irish identity. So yeah, fuck you if you’ve ever said northerners aren’t Irish, you’re a bloody dick.

Is fuath liom sin cĂ©n uair postaĂ mĂ© as gaelige nĂ fheacfaidh Ă©. NĂ brĂşigh chun cinn Tumblr siad amach. Tá an gaelige atá ag streachailt cheana fĂ©in, nĂl uainn seo. Is fuath liom ag postáil as BĂ©arla ach tá uaim mĂ©! Nach duine fhacainn Ă©!!!!! Nò Ta aistrigh uaim mĂ© ach tá mĂ© tuirseach do sin.
(I hate that when i post in irish nobody sees it. Tumblr doesn’t push it out. Irish is already struggling enough we don’t need this. I hate posting in English but I have to! Nobody sees it! Or I have to translate it but I’m so tired of that.)
