man lmfao it's pretty complicated i don't know how to articulate it. this is really long

cw for the typical discourse around this stuff, mentions of p*dophilia

in short every argument made against aging up uses the same basic logical fallacies. slippery slope, generalization, and assumption . the implication that every person who ages up fictional characters either is a danger to minors or is attracted to them in some way despite their being no empirical evidence or definitive way to conclude that about a person is, point blank, a bad faith argument.

fictional characters are not people - they're story telling devices. therefore they have no agency and cannot be effected by anything that happens to them. they're closer to a concept than a person. they're not real, they have no stake in real life - and the things we do with them are entirely made up. the argument should end there.

"but why age them up and not use *already adult character*" they are different character that accomplish different things. you wouldn't use blue to paint the sun

"im a minor and it makes me uncomfortable," i was a minor but im an adult now and i don't want to engage with any minors in this particular space which is why it's labelled 18+. most adults don't want to engage with minors over nsfw either. if someone does try to engage with or lure you with nsfw content knowing you're a minor, you are in danger and you should seek out a trusted person in your life to talk to and block said person. my job online isn't to make you comfortable and that experience is not indicative of every person online.

"why're you justifying having a crush on *canon minor character*" im in no way shape or form explicitly attracted to this character because he's a minor so there's not a crush to justify. im a person consuming a piece of media, and this character engages my interest and is drawn to be good looking. so i take him and engage with him in a way i like - that is how media consumption works. as an adult because im an adult.

even if we took sex/nsfw/romantic context out of the equation because that's normally what this argument centers on - i almost always contextualize characters in adulthood because that's the stage of life im in.

"why're you aging up a character just to sexualize them," im not. im aging them up because it develops their character in my mind and i find them more relatable. even if i did it wouldn't matter because it still means im transforming that character into an adult.

your assumption that people use this weird roundabout to justify their attraction to kids is based on the idea that actual predators and dangerous people online don't have spaces that are easily accessible and that their specific target is fandom.

"what about characters who are drawn as explicitly as children and meant to be depicted as children? is it okay then?" i find it deeply uncomfortable to age up a character who's next stage of life isn't already adulthood since it jumps through a lot of hoops. it's a boundary im unwilling to cross as it is for many others. if somoene does something i find unsavory, i block them.

at a certain point, ever single possible moral gray for this argument becomes bad faith. to break it down any further than necessary is simply a way to foster a "gotcha sicko!" moment instead of contributing intelligence to this conversation. people aren't actually looking to understand what this is or to break it down, they're just unwilling to think critically for fear of being morally ostracized by internet communities.

i hate to inform you, but having all the "right takes," will not save you from internet crucifixion. the sooner you have strong boundaries and morals in real life, the easier your life will be instead of trying to gain moral highground on random people online.

fiction indeed effects reality - but fiction isn't an inherent one to one to who someone is. fictions relationship to reality in relation to things like propaganda, and those affects all require additional context.

im in a stable relationship with a man i've been with for 5 years. he is a year older than me. i consume content about toxic relationships all day long. because what i do, what i find interesting, what i engage with are not inherent to who i am.

just like how watching a violent movie doesn't make you a violent person. just like how reading a book from a problematic writer doesn't mean you condone their actions. does everyone person who makes freud jokes agree with the things he was? you can have perceived correlations, bias is human nature but you can't decide anything definitively over something as trivial as fandom content on the internet.

morality and real life are largely based on context and awareness of the world. a man can be a murderer, but there is a stark difference between a man killing his abuser and a serial killer. your opinion of these people is formed and shaped by what context you know about them and evidence. real people have context necessary to make fully formed opinions on them and are effected by internet witch hunts.

and it is, your right, to not engage with someone based on a perceived context. but making assumptions and accusations as serious as p*dophilia is unbelievably dangerous and not rooted in anything.

when you create moral boundaries between you and someone else, assume the worst of them, you are creating a type of person to be othered. that line of thinking has been used for hundreds of years to commit acts of violence against unassuming people and it is dangerous.

"it's not that deep," it sure isn't. which is why you shouldn't fucking harass strangers you have no real context for. which is why the concept of aging up a character cannot be indicative of a persons morals and doesn't mean someone is attracted to kids.

if you want to have a talk minor safety online, there are plenty of ways to do that. there are plenty of conversations to be had about how adults and minors should engage appropriately.

but adults cultivating a space for themselves and other adults has little to do with minors. and unless you can prove, without doubt, that the person you're engaging with is bad - it's not your place to enact your perceived justice.

i would understand if there was some provable evidence in relation to fandom communities but there just isn't. the things that happen in this spaces have no effect on real minors unless minors are in the spaces they're not supposed to be in anyways.

aging up is a narrative tool, just like au's are. just like backstories are. we're all playing make believe and aging up a fictional character doesn't mean someone is a predator. end of story.

When Hinata sees the poster of himself that Yachi made. I sob like a baby every time.

All the Brazil foreshadowing

Hinata's bathroom songs. Reminds me of my friends and I taking karate in preschool and learning Japanese and always giggling at "benjo."

Takeda-sensei being so dedicated to bringing out the full potential of the team. Like, the team wouldn't have Ukai, or the Nekoma connection, or all of the training in Tokyo, - read: everything necessary for them to make it to nationals - if not for him. His words of encouragement to Hinata and Kageyama after they lost to Seijoh? Chills every time I read it.

And Ukai. Takes on. A second job. That has him up before sunrise. Just to coach these high schoolers.

The fact that Saeko stayed and drank with the coaches when she drove Hinata and Kageyama to Tokyo.

In the anime, when Kuroo is teasing Kenma for the face he makes when watching Hinata play and Kenma's like "I don't make a face" and Kuroo says, "You do." There's this like half beat pause before Kenma comes back with "Do not" and idk why but the added pause cracks me up.

Nishinoya choosing Karasuno for the uniforms. This is top tier Libra behavior and I would do the same.

The fact that Kenma and Tora had dark hair as first years, but then have bleached hair as second years. Like, did they decide to do it together? Did Tora just show up one day with gloves and foil and was like "now that we're friends, bleach your hair with me."

We get to see the other characters relationships with each other, not just the ones pertaining to the main characters. Like Oikawa and Iwa, Kuroo and Yaku, Yachi and Kiyoko, Atsumu and Kita, Tendou and Ushijima, etc.

The whole banding together of the team to help dumbasses Kageyama, Hinata, Nishinoya, and Tanaka pass their exams. The fact that Kageyama is even included in this group. The fact that both main characters are stupid. I laugh every time.

Opposing team members thinking Nishinoya is really cool

Everything about the timeskip. Everything. The teams. The jobs. Where everyone ended up. Makes me warm and happy inside.

I legit love every character and could go on a rant on why for every single one. All of them. Even Washijo. Furudate is a master of likability and relatability.

You eye yourself as critically as you’ll allow in the mirror, pursing your lips and trying to work around the sight of you in The Dress.

“Denks, are you almost ready to go?”

There’s a slight chuckle from your bedroom, another few rapid clicks of his controller.

“Are you almost ready to go?”

“I’m always ready to go.” As an afterthought you swipe on another layer of lipstick, blotting it out with your ring finger, and wrinkling your nose. “You’re the one who still hasn’t tied your tie yet.”

“Yeah, that takes me like thirty seconds, but you—” His voice trails off when he turns to eye you, eyebrows rising slowly, steadily as he looks you up and down. “What are you wearing?”

You fidget a little, plucking at the seam of your dress, shrugging a little as nonchalantly as you can. “A dress?”

“C’mere.”

“Denks—”

“Just for a second.” His controller is abandoned, clattering across the desk as he swivels, his chair creaking as he goes. “Real quick, just c’mere a sec.”

Your reluctance is for show and you know he knows that, but it doesn’t stop him from impatiently gesturing towards you, arms extended, hands waving, lower lip pushing out into a petulant pout. The second you’re in reach his hands gravitate to your hips, tugging you to stand between his legs. Slowly, with intent, with purpose, Denki drags his eyes from head to toe, his tongue peeking out as he repeats,

“What are you wearing?”

your big fat brain with this one… omg and i feel like bc he likes spicy food so much and he knows they don’t ask stupid questions when management asks him if he wants to do it, he honestly doesn’t mind lmao.

and i’m so sure w bakugou especially canonly loving spicy food he would be able to handle them ALL and he would be able to handle his reactions when it’s spicy too. so like the first lot of wings he’s calmly answering questions about his career, being honest and polite but of course still his straightforward and blunt self. he puts so much thought into his answers too so even civilians that aren’t a usual fan of dynamight they still tune in because they respect his opinion and what he says. as people of all age ranges watching him to hear about his life as a hero, the mental health issues that are automatically locked onto the job and then overwhelming sense of pride he gets from the job. and then innocent questions like his hobbies and what he does in his spare time and katsuki is comfortable with it all literally just munching away on the wings with no struggle even mentioning “yeah i eat shit this spicy at home, this show is a breeze for me.” even will mention izuku’s episode how his eyes were already watering, nose running and downing milk on the second wing. “that idiot might be strong but holy shit does he have weak taste buds.”

and then when it’s like the second to last wing he can feel his tongue tingle with heat and usually he’d be okay with just that bottle on its own but the lead up of the spicy ones before also gives his cheeks a light red flush and he’s got his elbows up as he holds onto the chicken both sides. (he’s also the type to completely suck the soul out of a chicken wing that literally only the bone is left. at home he’s also the type to chew bones, some shit about making his teeth stronger or whatever) ANYWAY yeah he can kinda feel it with the second to last one and he’s trying not to show it but he’s kinda squinting with his bites and his foot is tapping on the ground. and the interviewer feels like it’s the right time to talk about you, at least it keeps dynamight’s mind off the feeling of his mouth on fire.

“i think it’s the right time to ask about your girlfriend, what’s it like being in a relationship with one of the biggest heroes in the world?”

and whilst the question was being asked he’s trying to take out bits of chicken in teeth with his tongue but the mention or just the thought of you makes a huffy laugh flood through him, his shoulders shaking a little.

“i guess you should be askin’ her that but her life is much more… normal than mine,” and he’s wiping his eyes a little now, still a smirk on his face, “so our schedules can clash but nothin’ we can’t handle. best thing that’s ever happened to me, gave my life some purpose, you know?”

and the interviewer doesn’t know, neither do the viewers. a girl giving a pro heroes life purpose? doesn’t the job already do that for you? and bakugou can tell that’s the next question so he’s already on it.

he chuckles loudly, the noise rumbling from his chest, “i know what you’re thinkin’,” he pulls chicken off the bone with his teeth, munches for a while and speaks when his mouth is clear, “as honest as i can be, sometimes this job feels like you’re livin’ for everyone else. riskin’ my life for the people, which of course is somethin’ i accept and isn’t inherently a bad thing. but it can make life feel very real, knowin’ i can die at anytime and that forces you to comes to terms that death is always possible. always seeing life flash past your eyes every time i’m in a battle. but y/n, my girlfriend, she makes me fear death. i want to live, i always want to return home so i can see her again. yeah… she makes life worth livin’.”

and maybe it’s a bit too deep for a hot wings episode, but then again any interview with good questions becomes a sentimental, respected interview with pro hero dynamight. it sounds needed and it makes sense. humanises him for the viewers who only see him as the stubborn loud hero on their tv screens or at the scene of destroyed homes with a villian in hands. he’s sorta wiping his eyes at the end of that and nobody knows if it’s because of you or the wings.

some light hearted questions are included too, especially to wrap it up at the end with bakugou tapping his foot rapidly like it will soothe the burn on the last wing, “fans were speculating how on brand it was for you to reveal your girlfriend in a ten second video on her tiktok account instead of the usual red carpet picture or instagram post. what made you decide to do that?”

bakugou shrugs, his eyes gleaming, wiping his hands with a napkin. thinking about you really takes his mind off the burn in his mouth. “we didn’t decide shit and she was never a fuckin’ secret anyway. she wanted to do the dumb video with me so i did and i never say no to her.” his eyes are focused but slightly glazed over. then he wipes his nose rather roughly tacking on, “and she’s gorgeous, make sure you’re all lookin’ at her with respect.”

Izuku is staring at you when he gets in the car, thinking to himself that there is not a single thing about you he’ll ever forget. He could never see you again, but he’d remember you as you are every Saturday morning when he sees you: eyes bright, smile lopsided with your laugh ringing out like a church bell as if you’re some sort of sanctuary that reminds him it’s time to worship, but he’s never stopped since last Saturday.

You like summer and everything that comes with it. You like the feeling of the sun on your skin and how lemonade and ice cream and fruit just tend to taste better. You like sundresses and sandals and long days. You don’t even mind the sweat that rests on your brows or the way everything sticks together. But out of all of the things you like about summer, what you love most is the farmers market in the next town over.

It’s a massive space, taking place in a barn surrounded by cornfields and wildflowers. The fruit here is the best: a girl with long black hair sells peaches so juicy it dribbles down your chin and oranges unlike any other; a blonde man with fiery eyes sells corn that ruins everyone else’s for you; a girl with brown hair who tells you on the side of the milk carton you bought which cow it came from. Everyone here is kind. Thin lipped, polite smiles are given every time you walk past them; thank you’s uttered with every exchange of money; doors held open and samples offered with hands insistently outstretched.
