The NCRI study, titled “Killing with Applause: Emergent Permission Structures for Murder in the Digital Age,” highlights the profound societal implications of this event, showcasing the disturbing normalization of violence against corporate figures and the role of social media in amplifying such narratives.

While the specifics of Thompson’s murder are shocking, the NCRI warns that the broader cultural shift it appears to be facilitating may be even more worrisome. Events like the “UHC Shooter Lookalike Contest,” held in Washington Square Park, reveals how online rhetoric is influencing real-world behaviors. Participants, many of whom were dressed to mimic Mangione, gathered to celebrate and parody the assassination, demonstrating an alarming erosion of societal norms.

On social media, fancam edits and viral videos glorify Mangione’s actions, framing him as an anti-establishment icon. According to the report:

These videos frequently feature romantic or hyperbolic captions, highlight niche cultural affinities, or focus on his physical appearance, further amplifying his image and fueling narratives that glamorize his actions. This glorification fuels permission structures that could inspire others to perceive violence as a legitimate form of activism.

The hashtag #EatTheRich has surged by over 500 percent week-over-week, accompanying calls for violence against corporate figures and circulating “CEO Wanted” posters and executive “hit lists.” These posters, which feature “mocked-up mugshots of healthcare executives,” promote vigilante justice and represent “a deliberate attempt to provoke fear and destabilize corporate leadership.”

According to the NCRI report, “The murder of Brian Thompson appears to have catalyzed a dangerous feedback loop, where glorification, humor, conspiracy, and targeted harassment create an environment ripe for further violence.”

The controversy spread rapidly across multiple online communities, although the relevant post has since been deleted.

Professor Lee Eun-hee from Inha University’s Department of Consumer Studies pointed out, "The problem is that consumers feel disrespected. Even though the boycott has continued for several days, the company has given the impression that it has not communicated properly with its customers, and even posted an advertisement that appeared mocking." She added, "Even though Naver is the top platform in the industry, such behavior could be seen as reckless and arrogant by customers, especially when competitors are closing in."

Recently, some twitter users have labeled Naver Webtoon a misogynistic company and called for a boycott. Naver Webtoon's Dilemma

For Naver, the situation is a catch-22. If the company deletes a specific work while the contest is underway, backlash is expected. Additionally, it's not appropriate for the editorial team to intervene by demanding changes to the title or content of a challenge-level work rather than an official serialization. Plummeting Stock Prices and U.S. Investor Lawsuits

The troubles for Naver Webtoon extend beyond the boycott. The company’s U.S. entity, Webtoon Entertainment, which serves as the headquarters, successfully went public on the New York Stock Exchange in late June this year. However, following its IPO, poor performance caused the stock price to plunge.

In the second quarter, Webtoon Entertainment's revenue reached $320.97 million, a mere 0.1% increase from the same period last year, while operating losses soared to $79.09 million, more than 14 times the previous loss. The majority of revenue comes from the Korean and Japanese markets, where weakened local currencies against the dollar significantly impacted the second-quarter results. If the currency effect is excluded, the adjusted year-over-year growth rate for the second quarter would be 11.1%.

Following the second-quarter earnings announcement, the stock price fell nearly 40% and has continued to decline. As of October 16, the stock was priced at $11.18, roughly half of the $21 IPO price. Although third-quarter results may show slight improvement due to the stabilization of the won and yen exchange rates, it is unlikely that performance and stock prices will improve sufficiently to satisfy investors in the short term.

As the stock price continues to decline, U.S. investors are moving forward with lawsuits. Since September, law firms specializing in securities litigation have been recruiting participants for a class action, alleging that Webtoon Entertainment failed to adequately disclose the impact of exchange rates on revenue growth in the securities filings submitted to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in June.

It's probably obvious that I have a lot of thoughts about this, lol. :)

I've read a lot of good posts on here about how and why the relationship between creators/producers and their audience/fans has changed, sometimes for better and often for worse, in the past few years.

I also think a lot about how the language around fandom has changed ... how often I see the phrase consume media instead of plain old 'watching a movie' or 'enjoying a tv show' or 'playing a video game.'

The phrase seems to say something about how fandoms and audiences now view their relationship to entertainment media. How as 'consumers' people try to use market forces and pressure tactics to influence a story's direction ... campaigns and billboards and hashtags. And the 1 in 100 success story adds fuel to the fire, encouraging even more consumer campaigning ... even though the business model of the entertainment industry is itself in huge flux, with audience reception being just one of a multitude of factors.

I know some creatives actively lean into the fandom interaction and lobbying for stories/ships/actors - at least when it suits them - while others just tolerate it because it's the price of having an entertainment-related job in the social media era. But ultimately I'm not convinced it's a net positive for fandom, or the creatives behind the TV shows and movies and video games we enjoy.

So, what happens to people that were doing those jobs?

I believe the relentless endless obnoxious and fucking nauseating push for all things AI & robotics is leading to the following scenario in the next five years:

Once 80% of current jobs have been replaced with AI and robotics, people will be offered jobs to do what they are already doing -- use social media, online gaming and Metaverse (which will be rolled out already) -- and they will be paid as "User Researchers", to fill out surveys and give feedback on their daily experiences using social media, online gaming and the Metaverse and to test out functionality and usability of new features.

What UBI (Universal Basic Income) should have been for all adult US citizens will instead go to these User Researchers. I predict they will borrow from proposed UBI models and pay these User Researches a $1k a month and provide them with healthcare.

The real purpose of these jobs will be to make people even more obsessed and dependent upon social media, online gaming and the coming Metaverse than they already are. Instead of breaking to go to work, now this is their work so there is no break from it Monday through Friday -- they will be addicted.

They will be so addicted that even on the weekends, they will choose to stay inside online -- social media, gaming and Metaverse -- instead of going out and about, socializing, exercising, going for a walk, shopping, movies, going to eat, sports, plays, etc.

VR will be huge at this point and all of the above can be experienced virtually so why leave your house or apartment.

Naturally, there will be people who occupied the 80% of jobs that were eliminated by AI and robotics that wont have an interest in being User Researchers for social media, online gaming or the Metaverse.

I predict they will get the equivalent of retirement packages since their actual functional roles no longer exist and have been replaced with AI and robotics and then I envision they will allow these people to access their 401k and social security early.

I believe User Researcher will be offered as a major in colleges and online academies. I also believe influencers will tout it as the thing to do post high school and post college. I also predict that degrees will be optional for the position and not required.

Naturally, given that these User Researchers will literally be paid for their addictions to social media, gaming and the Metaverse, as one might suspect, they will not be getting up very much from their respective couches, gaming chairs, bean bags, beds and Lay-Z boy reclining chairs and thus, by design, obesity, Type II diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart disease and all manners of diseases caused by sedentary lifestyles will skyrocket.

A less healthy, more sedentary, more addicted to tech society than we even have know that are dependent on big tech to fund their existence.

What could possibly go wrong?

Covid was the soft reset for the Age of AI & robotics.

They got rid of countless jobs and small businesses and financially ruined many entrepreneurs and 9 to 5'ers.

Paradoxically, at the same time we were being told that we couldnt go into the office because Covid, yet somehow fast food and big box retail were deemed "emergency services" (like hospitals and pharmacies???) so that mostly black and brown impoverished people who statistically are more immunocompromised and less healthy were constantly exposed to the dangers of Covid as many customers refused to mask up.

You Are My World Sims 4 Challenge

Welcome to the You Are My World Sims 4 Challenge! 

The goal of this challenge is to create your own world in the Sims 4 starting with no money! This challenge does require the City Living Expansion pack, but I have a base game substitute listed for the City Living requirement so all simmers can play! I am unsure if a challenge like this already exists, so if there is a challenge like it I DO NOT take claims that this is the first of its kind! This challenge does use some rules from the Rags to Riches challenge! I hope you enjoy this challenge, if you do it please use the hashtag #madiplays4 so I can see it :)  

General Rules - 

Start as a Young Adult and have no money (cheat “money 0”)

Bulldoze every lot in the world you decide to live in and start on any empty lot 

Must reach level 10 in the politician career and join the politician branch (City Living)

For base game join the business career and reach level 10 in the investor branch 

Play on either normal or long lifespan (I recommend playing on long lifespan for more gameplay and time for building lots) 

You do not have to finish this in one generation! The oldest heir of every gen will “take over” and they must join the same career as their parents and reach level 10 of the same branch 

The only cheat aloud is the “money 0”  in the beginning! Afterwards, no cheats or mods are allowed to help with things like money, skills, careers, and builds. 

Your sims can only be aged up on their birthday 

Lot traits are allowed for any lots 

If you have the university pack, you can not take your starter sim to university! After heirs can go to University to get a head start on their career but it is not required.  

The challenge is technically finished once all lots in your world have a functional build! 

Build Rules - 

Your builds can be made by you. If you are not much of a build person, pick a lot off the gallery that is in your budget and place it into your world. 

For worlds with 7 or less lots, you must have at least 1 non residential/rental lot for sims to go to. For worlds with 8 or more lots, the world must have at least 2 non residential/rental lots. 

All build must at least be 10 x 6 unless you are building a tiny home 

Townie Rules - 

You can either make your own townies or pick sims off the gallery.

For worlds with 7 or less lots, you must have at least 5 townies. For worlds with 8 or more lots, you must have at least 10 townies. 

World Rules - 

You can do this challenge on any world you would like to!
