New York Occult Rockers MAMA DOOM Reveal 'Ring The Bell’ Music Video

Here's a track that gets better every time you listen to it. It's a ballade of sorts, a tale told of the longest night. "Ring The Bell" is the first single that emerged from 'Blood Salt Sacrifice' (2023) by MAMA DOOM, which dropped December 15th. Today, it gets the music video treatment and this Gratuitous Productions joint illuminates the story in a dreamlike way, where we are left to ponder its symbolism and puzzle together a meaning.

“Blood Salt Sacrifice," says the band, "tells a story that combines the eerie aspects of death and the undying with the enduring themes of love and power and Gratuitous Productions, led by Anne Terror and Grave Dave, wanted to create a Twilight Zone inspired video with ‘Ring the Bell.’ Most of the video was shot under the shadow of an ancient tree surrounded by several forgotten headstones. We set up a makeshift dreamscape which provided me with my own internal struggles because large spiders kept finding their way onto the sheets. There is always a lot of laughs and a whole lot of fun when making these videos, and we’ve got many more to come!”

"Ring The Bell" begins with a wavy Toolesque bass groove from Chuckie Rumbles, and the bass has a strong presence throughout the 3:34 runtime. This is paired with Anne Terror's vibrant beat and an otherworldly synth that has the feeling of ancient mystery about it. Like her keyboard playing, D.Lolli's vocals are well suited for the storytelling demands of the lyrics, supporting the narrative with a range of styles from serious and focused to dramatic and gnarly.

The underground New York trio released their third album on Interstellar Smoke Records, and it is a strange, haunting gem, weaving elements of doom metal with retro occult rock stylings (get it here). Last heard in 2021 with the release of their sophomore album Ash Bone Skin N Stone; haunting hard-rockers Mama Doom return this month with their devastating new album, 'Blood Salt Sacrifice.'

Originally formed in Newburgh, NY in 2016, since the band’s 2018 debut, 'From Blue to Bone' (2018) the trio have traded in guitars for keyboards and ethereal vocals, and in doing so summoned the deepest of grooves from dominions below.

Something is… very different in this simulation. Chance, or coincidence?

There are seven Lord Ravagers. Emanators of Destruction who carry out their Aeon’s bidding, and leave nothing but deathly silence echoing in the stars along their wake. But now, there is an eighth that is present among their ranks when Elio looks into the future again.

How curious.

It comes as an unexpected surprise, certainly, that there is yet another who draws the gaze of the Ruin Author. But it’s not an impossibility. After all, the universe is vast, and there are countless factors working in tandem that all affect the future.

The eighth Lord Ravager bears a vaguely humanoid appearance, but there is no mistaking them for something human. Their entire body is white, and filled with cracks. Like marble stone, filled with veins of gold. Blades shatter uselessly upon their skin as it strides among the stars, untouchable. Some form of invulnerability? What of their abilities? If there was to be an eighth that Elio also needed to account for, then–

The Lord Ravager opens their eyes.

And the world falls silent.

Elio focuses upon the Lord Ravager and concentrates. There is little doubt that this is most dangerous of all the Lord Ravagers. Who were they? Where did they come from? How did the Aeon of Destruction find them?

It’s not easy, but looking into the past is far a simpler task to accomplish than simulating the future. The past only records what has already occurred, and there’s no changing events that have already been set in stone.

Elio sees–

A beautiful world, lush with life.

Smoke curls into the air. Screams. Monsters walk the lands–

Stellaron.

Elio looks silently into the rapidly-changing scenery, and understands. The eighth Lord Ravager comes from a small, isolated world, one that hadn’t properly developed any methods of interstellar travel, nor established connections with other civilizations. And before they had any chance to do so… they were found by a Stellaron.

It’s easy enough to guess the rest of the story from there.

The eighth Lord Ravager. The sole survivor of a dead world. Sometime after the total destruction of her world, she must’ve caught the Aeon of Destruction’s attention. But for such an isolated world, how–?

A girl stands upon the barren earth motionlessly, broken sword in hand. The eighth Lord Ravager, before she was cast into the Warforge by the Aeon of Destruction and remade anew.

The Antimatter Legion. That explains it, then. The Antimatter Legion somehow found this world after its end, and following that…

Long white hair streams out behind the girl like a banner as she tosses her broken weapon aside. The defeated enemies before the not-yet Lord Ravager disintegrate.

Then, she suddenly tilts her head upwards. Eldritch blue eyes lock directly onto Elio’s own.

“Who watches?”

Elio’s eyes snap open.

Bright lights. The aroma of coffee. It’s mostly quiet on the Stellaron Hunters’ ship right now, and the parlor area is empty –save for a young woman with red-violet hair who looks up from her coffee with a smile. Kafka.

This one is a bit different since it's a band on tour/ road trip fic. If you ever watched Walk the Line and are a fan of Johnny Cash songs, this is definitely for you. Din is a single father raising Grogu and a guitarest. He has the opportunity to make some good money to tour with Luke Skywalker and his sister Leía. If you like the idea of Din Djarin singing Cash songs while he's playing the guitar, this is a good one. The fic is definitely a love letter to Walk the Line. Arteaga – NEON ACIDO (English And Español) (2023)

Mack of Fuzztlán takes a look at NEON ACIDO, the new album from Chilean occult stoner doom band Arteaga, released August 31st on Interstellar Smoke Records.

It’s a masterful work in six tracks, a unique journey in each one of them that makes It impossible not to be transported back to the seventies with the style that they have managed to achieve in such a magnificent way; a classic, vintage sound, riffs and a seventies rhythm to the max, all as if it were recorded in a still life thanks to this effect of reverberation and remoteness that is acquired, it even has a phantasmagoric air, a sound from beyond the physical.

Warsaw's WEIRD TALES Return with Frightful Spite on Frenetic 2nd LP

~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~

WEIRD TALES are back with plenty of new steam to burn in the provocatively titled, 'Second Coming, Second Crucifixion' (2023). Throwing all fucks to the wind, the stoner-doom trio from Poland present their second full-length album this weekend, and today Doomed & Stoned readers get an advance listen.

The band's first major release since the pandemic is true night music, fit for dirty, windswept streets 'neath lonely street lamps and shuttered buildings, brown bag in hand, guts emptied for all the world to see.

When I asked frontman Dima Rasputin about the sinister monicker that accompanies the shocking album cover by artist Kriss, he told me, "Well, you know, people are so dumb. If Jesus Christ comes back they will crucify him again." As to the tone, thematically and lyrically, of the songs before us, Dima adds, "So overall an overall disappointed feeling is a big part of the album. With them noses in them phones, we are doomed."

Weird Tales make their intentions known straight away with "Disgusting & Mean." Guitars screech, fret, and snarl, while groovy bass and drums double team to pummel your senses, topped by forlorn vocals that decry the absurdity of dealing with jerks we encounter in this rat race.

I see your dirty eyes I hear your dirty voice I don’t like your lies You think you’re wise? Now look at me, come on! You can’t get what’s going on! Do you see this smile? Now you die!

”Dead People’s Shit” takes the tempo down just a notch or two for this churning doomer. Upon first listen, you might think this is a tale told by a ghost, but indeed it is about the living dead and told from the perspective of one confronting them. “You are dead, how can’t you see it?” Then he cries out, “Nobody listens, nothing is real. Can you even feel?” The song might serve as a critique of a world in which each person escapes into their own private dimension of addictions and distractions.

”Undertaker” is a dyed in the wool doomer, in the vein of Cough, that carries plenty of emotion. Some excellent guitar work on display, as well. The song reaches into the depths of the genre and pokes at its boundaries.

Following this, is Krokodil Blues, a reference to an easily synthesized homemade drug so horrifying in its effects that it was hard to believe that anyone would want to try it. Currently fent and tranq are doing much the same thing in the States. The ‘20s are shaping up to be The Age of Anxiety for everyone, as the artiface of modern civilization and high technology ratchets up its demands on all of us. Is it any wonder that people want to escape? These chemicals, however, are transforming the human being into the basest of animals.

"Damned Lovers of the Swampire" is another standout track, with damning downtuned fuzz-covered riffs that reach inside of you and grab you by the guts. Five minutes in, the song breaks out into a groovy foot shuffle full of spit, bile, and blood, and the guitar burst at 6:30 is wicked bluesy, finally giving way to the screams of the damned. Then the album draws to a conclusion with the voracious 9 minute monster, “Acid Lobotomy.”

Second Coming, Second Crucifixion represents Weird Tales most concerted and terrifying effort yet -- lyrically and musically nihilistic to the core. Dima (guitar, vox), Kriss (bass) and Smoku (drums) have cobbled together a true soundtrack for the End Times. Look for the album to drop this weekend on Interstellar Smoke Records (pre-order here). Stick it on a playlist alongside Dopelord, Temple of the Fuzz Witch, Salem's Pot, Church of Misery, and Electric Wizard.
