(Not So) Steamy Saturday
"The times had brought changes to Whitebridge. Could Jane Weaver, R.N., take up her old life and duties. . . ?"
"'Jane, I'd like you to meet Dr. Boyd Daves. . . .' It took all of Jane's poise to cover her surprise. For the handsome man smiling politely at her from behind the wheel was black."
"A new black doctor had introduced the racial question . . . and Jane found not the threads of her old life but a new challenge to her heart."
Of the 500+ nurse romance novels from the 1940s to the early 1970s in our collection, it is rare to find one with African American main characters, let alone having them depicted on the cover, and even rarer are interracial relationships. In our collection, the nurse romances that do were all published after Civil Rights legislation of the mid-1960s. Such is the case this pulp novel, Homecoming Nurse by Rose Dana (one of the many pseudonyms for prolific pulp-fiction writer W.E.D. Ross, 1912-1995), published in New York by Lancer Books in 1968.
With the novel showcasing many of the social taboos of the time -- divorce, a small New England town forced to come to terms with contemporary racial issues, racially-exclusive country clubs, interracial relationships, mental illness, the village ice queen chasing after a married man -- we thought it would have the makings of a fairly steamy plot. But, alas, its narrative is plodding and pedestrian with barely a wisp of steam. Disappointing. To its credit, however, with the entire town fretting over the potential of miscegenation, the story does culminate in an interracial engagement (between the main character Jane's friend Maggie and Dr. Boyd, not Jane herself). Getting there, however, is tedious and about as exciting as an ice cream parlor on a sleepy New England main street.

It boils down to "consenting adults' love and sex lives are nobody's fucking business" and ho boy how many people just absolutely can't handle it.

Abusive interracial relationships are hard to talk about, it's hard for me to form that dialogue, but I am tired of the narrative that it's only Black men making Black women's lives a living hell. The chilling reality is that Black women can be dehumanized by any man and race and gender is always a factor. I do believe in Black love, well, love in general and I don't necessarily have preferences, but there's just a lot of things I'm wary of while navigating intimate relationships with anyone, platonic or romantic.

Acceptance of interracial relationships is one of the key measures sociologists use to examine and measure levels of racist attitudes in society. This recent infographic from Gallup shows encouraging real-time progress over sixty years in the US.

fun fact: if the main reason you don’t ship miles with gwen is because she’s a “snow bunny”?
YOU are a part of the problem.

My mom fucking insinuated that I'm somehow forcing my (black) partner to do everything for me like a slave and that he's my "caretaker by force" like I've somehow tricked him into doing everything for me. Not like he has FREE WILL to decide to help me because he loves me and knows how hard I try and wants to make it easier on me. No it must be because I'm white and he's black. Why else would he hang around such a burden?!?
So apparently saying fuck off in response to that makes me the bad guy. Not her getting drunk and ragging on about how I'm abusing my poor boyfriend with my fake disability. My dad yelled at me right in my face about it.
I did talk with my boyfriend after this and he said it was ridiculous and he actually feels he doesn't do ENOUGH for me. I love this man to death and I help him with less labor-heavy tasks all the time. It's not like he's the only one who gives in our relationship. And relationships aren't always 100% equal! Recently he's been helping me more because I've been cleaning out my room which is very labor heavy. But even still he only really does the heavy lifting that I can't do.
But apparently there's no other reason a black person and a white person would be together. No it has to be some sick fucked up racist and abusive relationship.

White people who are like "interracial relationships are fetishizing BIPOC" seriously don't realize how much they're infantilizing BIPOC, do they.

Have to share this bc I’ve been subscribed to a number of Black traveler, expat, polyglot and immigration channels on YouTube — and i am so proud of diasporans who’ve succeeded in securing better qualities of life, mentalities and identity for themselves and their families in Africa.
It’s an hour long (I got halfway thru before sharing), but even without watching all of it, this man has a true wealth of knowledge he’s cultivated in how he’s assimilated and embraced his heritage, as well as what he condemns, supports, and intends to do with and for his lineage.

tw: rape, sexual assault, grooming, racial fetishization
*folds hands and sits at table* when are we as a society going to talk about the fetishization of Black bodies from the kink community and the complex dynamics of dominant and submissive intentionally disguised as [slave] master and slave
I'm talking about people who prey on you over sexual stereotypes, push boundaries and blur the line of raceplay to fulfill their 1700s fetish without consent
