(Not So) Steamy Saturday

Of the 500+ nurse romance novels from the 1940s to the early 1970s in our collection, it is rare to find one with African American main characters, let alone having them depicted on the cover, and even rarer are interracial relationships. In our collection, the nurse romances that do were all published after Civil Rights legislation of the mid-1960s. Such is the case this pulp novel, Homecoming Nurse by Rose Dana (one of the many pseudonyms for prolific pulp-fiction writer W.E.D. Ross, 1912-1995), published in New York by Lancer Books in 1968.

With the novel showcasing many of the social taboos of the time -- divorce, a small New England town forced to come to terms with contemporary racial issues, racially-exclusive country clubs, interracial relationships, mental illness, the village ice queen chasing after a married man -- we thought it would have the makings of a fairly steamy plot. But, alas, its narrative is plodding and pedestrian with barely a wisp of steam. Disappointing. To its credit, however, with the entire town fretting over the potential of miscegenation, the story does culminate in an interracial engagement (between the main character Jane's friend Maggie and Dr. Boyd, not Jane herself). Getting there, however, is tedious and about as exciting as an ice cream parlor on a sleepy New England main street.

This is gonna make some of ya’ll uncomfortable. . . but our friendships, situationships, romances, marriages, and families formed and found across colorlines are gonna need to move and manifest real differently as we enter this next chapter of Jim & Jane Crow // the “I love them regardless” or “we don’t talk about politics” or “they don’t see color” mindset is gonna have to radically shift because Black existence is fundamentally political // Blackness came out of slavery and as long as we exist in a country where almost 4 million people voted “yes” to slavery and 76 million people voted for the fascist branch of white supremacy, that existence will remain politically necessary for our survival.

🖤 If the Black women you love or the Black friends you made in school or at work were your entry point to learning about Black freedom struggles, you need to meditate on your miseducation and how to grow your knowledge beyond the interactions with your Black friends.

🖤 If your brown skinned kids (via birth or adoption) or your mixed families are not in community with Black folks outside of family members, you need to transform how your community practices look (and maybe move).

🖤 If you study or research Black histories, stories, or cultures but have no Black friends (and I mean “been in their kitchens // know their mamas” Black friends) . . . leave your colonizer ways at the back door, cause ain’t no one got time for the layers of caucasity you are peddling.

Loving Black folks does not equate to loving or caring for Black communities // your love must extend beyond your nuclear family, brunch date models and research topics that feed into tokenism and exceptionalism. Just as our diasporic kinfolk have to disrupt their miseducation, people of a lighter complexion who love, live, and laugh with Black folks need divest from their everyday practices and politics that reinforce the displacement and erasure of our shared (and very segregated) communities. x

Black women in interracial relationships can be just as annoying as black men because why am I watching a video of a black woman basically going “my white boy isn’t like the other white boys” and her man is wearing a Kufi hat and blasting rap music. It’s just as weird as a black man letting his white wife wear box braids and bonnets and shit. That shit is weird. Let white people be white people. You don’t have to turn them pseudo black or whatever. They can be on our side and not wear dashikis and bonnets and shit.

Abusive interracial relationships are hard to talk about, it's hard for me to form that dialogue, but I am tired of the narrative that it's only Black men making Black women's lives a living hell. The chilling reality is that Black women can be dehumanized by any man and race and gender is always a factor. I do believe in Black love, well, love in general and I don't necessarily have preferences, but there's just a lot of things I'm wary of while navigating intimate relationships with anyone, platonic or romantic.
