Happy International Romani Day!

To celebrate the real #InternationalRomaniDay, this post will cover the fictional Rom Dr. Victor von Doom. In Fantastic Four Special #1 "My Dinner with Doom", Doom uses the Rapprochement Festival to invite Reed Richards over to dinner.

Dr. Doom sets the mood for Reed with Haydn's Quartet in F Minor. Opus 20 No. 4 is said by Haydn to be "in the [Romani] style". (the z-word, an exonym which comes from Greek for untouchables should not be used) Opus 20 No. 5 is what’s performed on page.

Doom has prepared Romani cuisine that were his mother's favorites for his dinner with Reed. The first named dish is sarma: cabbage leaves stuffed with rice, minced meat, and spices. As for the rest, I'm unsure if some are simply for the fictional Latveria or based on a real dish.

The care and intimacy with which Doom planned his date with Reed is significant. To invite Reed over and share his mom and culture's cuisine is no small thing for Doom. If I made any error in this post please let me know. Any insight and further comments welcome!

Happy International Romani Day

Today is also the total solar eclipse across North America and it was very cool to see for myself.

But in the Romani context, this day is important for us to celebrate our culture, learn about our history, and to advocate for Romani rights across the world.

If you aren’t Romani but still wish to observe this day, then I invite you to visit the website for the European Roma Rights Centre where various articles can be found on Romani life, as well as the various forms of oppression we are subject to. It’s a very valuable resource for learning about Romani Rights.

Another valuable source of information that is more easily digestible are the shorts and videos made by Florian Tacorian on YouTube and TikTok. He’s Kalderash from Romania and his videos shed light on daily life for Roma, our traditions and culture, as well as how our culture is perceived by outsiders and misrepresented.

Take this day as an opportunity to learn and appreciate our culture, as it makes you a better ally when advocating for our equal rights.

As for my Romani siblings across the world, things are getting better and I personally see gadje changing their views on Roma as they get more educated, even in real life. Stay vigilant and stay safe, but have faith in your neighbors and be proud of who you are.

This International Holocaust Remembrance Day, I want to remember the Rroma/Romani/Sinti people who were also targeted for slaughter. They suffered alongside us and deserve to have their pain recognized by the Jewish Community. Our Histories' parallel each other, we share many of the same harmful stereotypes.

August 2nd marks the International Day of Remembrance of the Roma Genocide Victims.

On the night of August 2-3, 1944, around 3,000 Roma prisoners were killed in gas chambers in the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. It took 52 years for this day of remembrance to be established, which was spearheaded by leaders of Roma organizations from 10 European countries and the USA.

Ukraine has observed this day since 2004. In this remembrance, there are 140 places of mass execution of Roma by the Nazis in Ukraine.

Babyn Yar was one of them. In September 2016, a memorial monument was put in place of a Roma tent covered in bullet holes from machine gun fire.

"Babyn Yar is a horror for Gypsies. They died without even knowing what they were being killed for,” says Roma writer Rani Romani (Raisa Nabaranchuk),whose grandmother died there.

On this day, the Holodomor Museum reminds us that, "it is crucial to emphasize again that human life is of the highest value, and human rights require unquestionable observance. Disrespecting and neglecting them leads to the gravest crimes."
