this is gonna sound really petty but i'm brazilian, the oscars shortlist just came out and my country's beautiful heartbreaking movie about our dictatorship is definitely gonna lose to the bizarre french musical about a TIM drug lord despite clearly being the better international feature. this is the first time brazil has made it to the shortlist since 2008 and if the other movie wasn't in the running i think we'd have a real shot. :(
Not petty at all. Representation matters. Hopefully Gomez's shoddy performance will be considered.

Kneecap has been shortlisted for the Best International Feature category at the Oscars! So close! It's a hefty, impressive shortlist, so a nomination is definitely not a sure thing, but fingers & toes crossed for Jan 17th. That would be kind of insane :)

10 fics for International Fanworks Day
THESE ARE ALL ALMOST FROM THE SAME FANDOMS IM SO SORRY but they are very good I recommend.
Please consider going through the authors' other works as well.
1. Nothing hurts like the almost, almost, almost by communist_sasuke
Fandom: Bungo Stray Dogs
Summary: “Don’t use Corruption, Chuuya.” Dazai tried again. “Let’s just get out of here.”
(A mission goes wrong, and Dazai learns to hold on to the things he can't bear to lose. If only his revelation hadn't come a little too late.)
I KNOW I KNOW mind the MCD tag but it's so well written and the grief just hits best at 1 am.
2. Atsushi's Guide to Surviving in the Armed Detective Agency (and Being a Part of a Family) by FrogintheWindow
Fandom: Bungo Stray Dogs
Summary: Atsushi studies his coworkers in the hopes of understanding what exactly he’s a part of, and realizes that he’s joined a family, not an agency.
Basically a series of short stories where Atsushi writes about his experiences with the Armed Detective Agency (and the Port Mafia)
FOUND FAMILY FOUND FAMILY FOUND FAMILY
3. try again, try again, try again by absolutefuckery

"They could be childhood friends!" Sakura gasps.
"Sensei has friends?" Naruto asks, squinting at Obito.

10. An Executive's Guide to Love, Jealousy & Everything in Between by mocarin
Fandom: Bungo Stray Dogs
Summary: Dazai Osamu is known for many things. Being the Port Mafia’s renowned strategist, a coldhearted executive, and ½ of infamous duo Double Black is just the shortlist. One thing he isn’t known for, however, is being capable of being in love. More specifically, in love with his hot headed slug of a partner of 3 years.
Or, Dazai attempts to navigate the complexities of love, with varying levels of success. Featuring his own special brand of flirting, an all too knowing audience, and poor, poor Tachihara who just wanted a friend but ended up on Dazai’s personal blacklist instead.

i know the oscars are bullshit but i'm a bit disheartened by everyone being sure Emilia Pérez is winning best international feature. can't judge its quality but i've seen 3 other films on the shortlist and they're all great and deserve recognition. many countries submitted works of art showcasing their history, culture, language and local talent and hollywood people choose this
#here's to watching the other potential nominees when they become available in my region and being sad all over again#once again i'm not criticizing the movie because i haven't seen it. i have my doubts it's really that great tho

Review: A Sunny Place For Shady by Mariana Enriquez.
Mariana Enriquez's A Sunny Place for Shady People is her first story collection since the International Booker Prize-shortlisted The Dangers of Smoking in Bed. Featuring achingly human characters whose lives intertwine with ghosts, the occult and the macabre, the stories explore love, womanhood, LGBTQ counterculture, parenthood and Argentina's brutal past.
I do always find this author's work intriguing, so when I saw her latest collection on Netgalley, I asked if I could read it and I'm glad I did as we get a new collection of weird, dark and political stories that reflect the lives of different women in horrifying and twisted ways.
I do think the stronger half of this are the first two stories - the characters she creates and shines a light on, are people I think I've met and so many I've met, that these stories feel like you're walking into a scene of people that you know and that she has written with pinpoint precision into these stories which make for story that really pull you in and allow you to live in them.
The tone in these stories vmake you feel like these stories are being told to you and just you alone, like you are in on this book from the beginning and something important is being shared with you on every page. This sort of autumn campfire energy creates a sort of menace in these stories that draws you in, especially in Face Of Disgrace in particular, which builds the tension until the very last line of the story.
Sure there are stories where I'm sat there thinking 'what did I just read?' but all in all this is a great collection that took me some time to read because these stories can really get to you. I'd definitely check for trigger warnings with these stories as they cover a range of things that effect women, violence against women in particular is something that is a major part of many of these stories.
I need to read something light after finishing this.
(Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC for honest review).

Happy Queer Media Monday!
Today: The Blue Caftan (2022)
A very recent movie, so if you are lucky, you might still catch it in a cinema. (Time stamp: March 2023)
(From left to right: Youssef, Mina and Halim, eating together.)
The Blue Caftan is telling the story of a married couple who run a traditional tailor shop in Morocco. The husband, Halim, is gay. At the beginning of the movie, he starts to make a blue caftan for a rich client. Over the time it takes for him to finish, we get to watch the developing feelings between him and his young apprentice, Youssef, as well as the progression of the wife’s, Mina’s, terminal breast cancer.
While the summary does sound a little bleak, this movie is so full of love and tenderness, it seriously softens the pain to something beautiful. While it is made very clear through the acting that Halim is not sexually attracted to his wife, his and Mina’s relationship is very deep and loving. Mina does show some animosity towards Youssef at the beginning, but as her illness progresses, she comes to accept and even appreciate him, so it really is three people who care deeply about one another up against Life. There is also a lot of nonsexual intimacy going on, mostly between Halim and Mina, but also between Halim and Youssef. All in all, it is a very soft, tender movie, that still deals with some very heavy topics.
The Blue Caftan premiered 2022 in Cannes, won multiple prizes at film festivals, and is Morocco’s official submission at the 2023 Oscars shortlist in the "International Feature Film" category.
I can’t really link much about it, but here is the IMBD page.
Queer Media Monday is an action I started to talk about some important and/or interesting parts of our queer heritage, that people, especially young people who are only just beginning to discover the wealth of stories out there, should be aware of. Please feel free to join in on the fun and make your own posts about things you personally find important!
#I watched this last week at our local film festival and was so impressed I just HAD to make this week about it#BEAUTIFUL movie#I can't stress how beautiful it is#or how important it's treatment of these subjects is#we've got one character slowly dying of an incurable illness#and everyone just dealing with it#we've got closeted gay men in a homophobic society#we've got the devaluation and eventual disappearance of traditional crafts/art forms#and so so much love#It is just so important to see a story of a gay man in a heterosexual marriage who is HAPPY and LOVES HIS PARTNER#like yeah life is hard but he is not unhappy#absolutely go and watch this movie#Queer Media Monday#The Blue Caftan#movies#Morocco#moroccan cinema#CN death#CN terminal breast cancer#oscar2023#gay movie#Movie Recommendation

This year, from August 8 to 11, Šibenik will host the first Croatian International Film Festival
This year, from August 8 to 11, Šibenik will host the first Croatian International Film Festival led by founder and creative director Ella Mische . The festival was also announced by the American Variety , one of the three leading magazines whose focus is on eminent reports from the world of film and visual arts, with a special focus on events in Hollywood.
The Croatian International Film Festival primarily emphasizes women in the film industry and the media, and the official opening will be held at Trg Republike Hrvatske with an attractive gala dinner, a red carpet and a tribute to Špiri Guberina , the legend of the Šibenik theater industry . For this occasion, our drama artist, the 'Dite of Šibenik' Goran Višnjić , will give an opening speech . This will be followed by three days of programs at as many as four locations: Barone Fortress, House of Arsen, Civitas Sacri and the Museum of the City of Šibenik.
On the list of received films, the audience will have the opportunity to see 6 feature-length and 20 short films, participate in panels and interviews with directors and actors. It is worth noting that CIFF has created a special 'student corner' intended for young talented film students.
"We received over 100 films from all over the world, and the shortlist will be reduced to 10 countries, among which are Croatia, the USA, Japan, Mexico, Nepal, Switzerland, Germany, Ukraine and Cambodia. It is my challenge and passion to combine my two world, Croatia and America, and connect them through the film industry, and where better than in the natural environment of our coast", said the founder of the commendable first edition of CIFF Ella Mische, a young academic actress, Croatian with an American address.
The festival will be officially opened by the film 'La Cocina' starring the American star Rooney Mara .
The details of the program and which domestic and international stars will be on the red carpet have not yet been revealed

Happy Birthday Christopher Brookmyre, born in Glasgow, September 6th 1968.
Brookmyre was raised and schooled in Barrhead, attending St. Mark’s Primary School and St. Luke’s High School, before attending the University of Glasgow. He has worked for the film magazine Screen International, and as sub-editor for The Scotsman and the Edinburgh Evening News.
Christopher is the author of eighteen published novels to-date, the latest being Dead Girl Walking.
In 2006 Christopher won the seventh Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction with All Fun and Games Until Someone Loses An Eye and, as is tradition, a Gloucestershire Old Spot pig was named after the winning novel. On accepting the award, Christopher said:
“My favourite PG Wodehouse quote is ‘It is seldom difficult to distinguish between a Scotsman with a grievance and a ray of sunshine’; today I’d like to think that I resemble the ray of sunshine.”
His first novel, Quite Ugly One Morning was the winner of the Critics’ First Blood Award for Best First Crime Novel of the Year in 1996. The book was made into a TV drama where James Nesbit was in my opinion miscast as the lead character Jack Parlabane, Brookmyre himself wanted Douge Henshall, who of course went on to star in Shetland.
The short story “Bampot Central” was shortlisted for the Crime Writers’ Association Macallan Short Story Dagger in 1997.
Boiling a Frog won the Sherlock Award for Best Comic Detective Novel in 2000 and Christopher became the only writer to win two Sherlocks when Be My Enemy picked up the 2004 prize. In 2007, Christopher was given the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Award for Writing.
Christopher has been shortlisted three times for the Theakstons Old Peculier Crime Novel of the Year Award: in 2007 for All Fun And Games Until Somebody Loses An Eye, in 2008 for A Tale Etched in Blood and Hard Black Pencil and in 2012 for Where The Bodies Are Buried.
In 2005 Christopher was named Young Alumus of the Year by the University of Glasgow. He has subsequently been awarded honorary doctorates by the University of Glasgow and by Edinburgh Napier University.
In 2013 Brookmyre announced, at The Edinburgh Book Festival that his novel All Fun and Games until Somebody Loses an Eye was to be made into a film, but unfortunately it looks as if nothing came of this.
Chris has many fans, one of the most famous must be the author Stephen King who opened last year’s Bloody Scotland crime writing festival brandishing a copy of Brookmyre’s Want You Gone and declaring it: “Fantastic!”
In 2018, Brookmyre wrote The Way of All Flesh with his wife, Dr. Marisa Haetzman. It was published under the pseudonym Ambrose Parry] In 2020, the team followed up with The Art of Dying, and in 2021, A Corruption of Blood.
The Cliff House was released inMay 2023, the book is his 27th in 25 years, the author says “It was a product of the pandemic, of time spent thinking about the people you haven’t seen.”
As well as writitng, Chris is a member of an unlikely musical super-group! The Fun Lovin' Crime Writers also features Val McDermid (vocals),, Mark Billingham (guitar/vocals), Luca Veste (bass), Doug Johnstone (drums/vocals), and Stuart Neville (guitar/vocals) have sold over 20 million books worldwide and won every major crime-writing award.
The supergroup will be taking to the stage om September 8th at the Palace Theatre in Paignton to raise the curtain on the 2023 Agatha Christie Festival, oh andyes, one of the songs the perform is Elvis Costello's Watching the Detecives.
