Happy #InternationalCheetahDay!
Tumblr media
Here is the cheetah in Zakariya al-Qazwini's 'Aja'ib al-Makhluqat wa Ghara'ib al-Mawjudat (The Wonders of Creatures and the Marvels of Creation), an important work of Islamic cosmography which was probably first written in the 1260s, and for centuries after was reproduced across the Islamic world. This illuminated manuscript copy was made in Wasit, Iraq in 1280 CE and is the earliest known surviving version.

International Cheetah Day! 3464b+ by Jen Hall Via Flickr: Until this last trip to Africa I didn't realize the cheetah populations were dwindling so fast. It is increasingly hard for a cheetah cub to be raised to adulthood. The biggest reasons are habitat loss, human-wildlife conflicts and poaching. When we were there, cheetahs that had new cubs had a ranger who followed them and did their best to protect the cubs from other predators and to keep an eye on them. I thought this was pretty cool. We even saw one ranger run off a baboon that was heading in this family's direction. I thought it was important to bring awareness to the cheetah's vulnerable status.

International Cheetah Day
They are mother nature’s precision, high-performance machine, designed to do one job and to do it with incredible skill and effectiveness. They can accelerate faster than a Ferrari, tearing up the ground from 0-75 mph in just 3 seconds, and they come with a self-grown paint-job that would make the fanciest of muscle cars blush with envy. That’s right, we’re talking about the Cheetah!
International Cheetah Day celebrates these incredible animals while raising awareness about their threat of extinction. So get ready to enjoy Cheetah Day!
History of International Cheetah Day
As founder of the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF), Dr. Laurie Marker chose to commemorate Khayam, a cheetah she raised at the Wildlife Safari that she ran in Oregon, by establishing December 4th as International Cheetah Day in his memory.
Khayam served as part of an important experiment that helped in determining whether or not captive Cheetahs can be taught to hunt and live in the wild on their own after being in captivity. After a trip to Namibia, the experiment was proven successful. However, Dr. Marker and Khayam still returned home following the experiment, after observing that local hunters were eliminating wild cheetahs as a threat to their livelihood.
Driven by this encounter, Dr. Marker decided to move to Namibia to help heal the rift between farmers and the majestic cheetah. It was in 1990 that she founded the CCF. Cheetahs are incredible animals, being the fastest land mammal in the wild today.
Sadly, though the numbers used to be significantly higher, there are only 8,000 of these creatures left in the wild today, a number that leaves them as Africa’s most endangered feline. Cheetahs hold their position as the world’s fastest land mammal, thanks to some tricks that have perfectly adapted them for high speed.
The cheetah’s full running speed is so fast that their feet only touch the ground once every 6 to 7 meters, and their muscular tail helps to steer them like a rudder at these high speeds. Needless to say, once a cheetah has prey in their sites, there’s no running away!
How To Celebrate International Cheetah Day
Celebrating International Cheetah Day is meant to not only be fun, but also educational. It’s an important day to raise awareness for wildlife, so try out some of these ideas to honor the day:
Learn All About Cheetahs
First, this is the perfect day to learn everything possible about these amazing animals. Try out these ideas for getting more involved in the world of cheetahs:
Watching documentaries is a fascinating way to learn about the plight of these beautiful creatures. A few options are available, including Running for Their Lives, Cheetah: Against All Odds, or the BBC’s Cheetah Family & Me.
Attend a variety of functions held on International Cheetah Day at various local zoos.
Read books about cheetahs to children, whether buying them or borrowing them from the local library. These might include titles such as How Many Spots Has a Cheetah Got? by Steve Martin; Oshok and the Cheetah by Arjun Dhol; or the amazing photography book, Remembering Cheetahs by Wildlife Photographers United.
Host an International Cheetah Day Party
Get some friends, family or coworkers together and host a party that means something! Use a cheetah theme and have decorations resembling the cheetah spots or also a jungle theme. When guests arrive, give them all headbands with cheetah ears on them to wear at the party. Serve snacks along the theme, such as Cheetos Paws or make a decorate a cheetah cake. Finally, for the evening’s entertainment, watch a cheetah documentary (listed above).
Don’t forget to make the party into a fundraiser by asking guests to bring a donation with them, or getting some gifts ahead of time that can be used to create a fundraising auction. While there, invite everyone to sign up for Cheetah Conservation Fund newsletters so they can stay informed.
Help with Cheetah Conservation
Once a new (or growing!) appreciation for these high-speed mammals has been developed, it’s time to start finding ways to help with their conservation. Many valuable and credible organizations have been striving to make a change for the better for these animals. Join in by volunteering or making a donation to one of these groups:
Cheetah Conservation Fund This organization (mentioned above) was founded in Namibia in 1990. Their website offers many options for education and donating, as well as purchasing resources that support the animals. In addition to simply making a donation, friends can actually sponsor a cheetah, whether monthly or for a full year.
African Wildlife Foundation Committed to protecting animals all over the continent of Africa, the AWF has been working toward solutions related to building communities and avoiding human-wildlife conflict.
Big Cat Conservation An organization in the UK, this group supports projects that help a variety of Big Cats around the world.
Spread the Word About International Cheetah Day
Getting the community involved with saving the cheetahs is ideal when it’s combined with efforts from the local zoo. People who live in a place where their local zoo doesn’t have an International Cheetah Day celebration, might decide to contact them and see what can be done to arrange one, even volunteering to help run it if need be!
The cheetah is known for being incredibly fast, but with your help, together we can slow down its extinction.

It's December 4th, 🐆 International Cheetah Day! On this day in 1976, a Cheetah cub named Khayam was born at Wildlife Safari, in Winston, Oregon, USA. Doctor Laurie Marker raised Khayam from a cub until its death in 1986. In 2010, she designated December 4th as International Cheetah Day, and the event has been growing by leaps and bounds ever since.
Cheetahs used to roam everywhere from the southern tip of India across the Arabian Peninsula to the whole of Africa, but the 7,000 remaining Cheetahs are now limited to small fragmented areas in Africa and Iran.
Cheetahs are carnivores and feed mostly on small antelope like gazelle and impala. They usually chase down their prey and then, as all big cats do, clamp down on the captured animal’s throat until it suffocates.
Cheetahs have “tear marks” that run from the inside corners of their eyes down to the outside edges of their lips to help deflect sun glare from their eyes.
A Cheetah cub has a mantle of long, tall hair on its back. This helps the cub blend into the tall grass while making it look much like a dangerous Honey Badger – an animal even lions and hyenas think twice about messing with.
Cheetahs have long, muscular tails that help them keep their balance when they're running fast. The Cheetah is the world’s fastest land animal – it can run 110 kph (70 mph) – but it can't outrun extinction. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Cheetah's current status as "vulnerable." Our planet's Cheetah population has declined by 90% over the past 100 years, and I suspect it won't be long before they’re declared "endangered." Can you imagine our world without Cheetahs? Please help save them if you can. ☮️ Peace… Jamiese of Pixoplanet

i recently went to the zoo and there was a cheetah who was bonded w this dog and i was imagining maybe monster!konig is in some sort of zoo/science lab thing and he gets bonded w kitten hybrid!reader!!
idk idk lolll i just could not stop thinking abt it
Staying in captivity as researchers are trying to understand how a simple ocean-type hybrid could grow so strong - how a normally pliable monster can be so aggressive and intelligent at the same time; scientists kinda treat him like their prized hound, a really nice and expensive possession they can do whatever they want with. They want to keep the subject happy and compliant with the research - but Konig dismissed any potential companion they brought to him before. Dismissed them violently, often killing poor fucker before the security could do anything. They dropped you in as a wild guess, a suggestion from one of the interns - if Konig gets insanely territorial when faced with hybrids of similar strengths and types, maybe he could do better with a therapy pet, something fluffy, small, and absolutely harmless. Needless to say, the intern was promoted after the first night Konig spent buried between your legs, fucking you for long enough that the whole lab would watch - and he didn't kill you by the end of the day. If anything, he bred you, properly and nicely. If anything, they have just found a way to make him less angry during the checkups - if they allow him to fuck you right before the research process, he would be...almost fine. Almost calm. He bonds with you easily - you're a cat hybrid, small thing, completely harmless. You could do some damage to humans with your claws and teeth, but Konig is off-limits, and you know this. He is fine with you biting and marking him - he searched such affection, he fucking adores it and wants you to do it more. Researchers think they finally found a key to him, that he is finally willing to participate in the experiments... Oh, they couldn't be more wrong. Once Konig gets a taste of how precious his mate is, he starts to think of why the hell he even supports these guys. Winds are changing - and monsters soon will be ruling the society. It's a good thing you already found yourself a protector, right?

"The Asiatic cheetah is on the brink of extinction due to worsening conditions. Unfortunately, wildlife conservation in Iran is not a top priority for the government, which is under intense pressure from sanctions. These sanctions not only affect the government but also the livelihoods and employment conditions of the people across the country. Companies and factories are going bankrupt, and their workforce is being downsized. As a result, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep experts at non-governmental and non-profit organizations that are dedicated to preserving wildlife. Individuals are forced to migrate from hope to despair to sustain their paths of career growth and prosperity for themselves and their families. The Iranian Cheetah Society (ICS), which used to have over 50 members, now manages all conservation, educational, and advocacy activities with only six individuals. Among them, we manage to pay a modest salary to only one person and struggle intensely with a shortage of manpower and budget. In the past year alone, three key members decided to migrate. If we are to dedicate more time and resources to the conservation of the Asiatic cheetah, there is no solution other than preserving the few remaining workforce. It is important to note that extinction won’t wait for political issues to be solved. The current supporters of the ICS have somewhat assisted in keeping ongoing conservation activities in the field, despite sanctions and economic hardships. However, the lack of sufficient manpower for field deployment renders project budgets futile, no matter how much they increase. Therefore, this year, we intend to request assistance for covering the salaries of our conservationists and aim to secure project costs from larger institutions throughout the year since they are generally uninterested in covering human resource expenses. According to our estimates, by Giving Tuesday next year, each full-time expert will incur at least 4100 euros in expenses. This amount covers only the salary and does not include insurance and other expenses, which we hope to obtain from other sources. With every 4,100 euros, we will be able to contract a full-time force for one year. We hope to raise a minimum of 8,200 euros from Giving Tuesday to International Cheetah Day this year. You can also contribute by securely donating money through PayPal at HelpCheetah.com or by sharing this message with others, helping us remain hopeful for preserving the Asiatic Cheetah."
- The words of Iranian Cheetah Society CEO Morteza Pourmirzai.

"Well, I definitely wouldn't be against that." Cinn chuckled quietly. They walked amiably alongside Shark Bite, though now...they were a bit more wary of the childish prankster. Acacius tended to target newcomers to the city, but Shark Bite had done a great service for Apotos...so they weren't about to let the other fall prey to a prank. "Buuuut, only if I can give you my number in turn. I'll make sure t'text you if Fachio ends up having a discount day, sound fair?"
Speak of the devil...there was Acacius, up above. He had dropped one of the bags, the other currently loftily held on his back as he tried to run across the rooftops. Cinn had to resist the urge to shake their head. That wouldn't deter him...it would just spur him on. They took another bite of their Breezy Dog, realizing they only had one more bite before the delectable meal would be gone.
"And you're welcome, but really- you don't need to thank me. Consider it a thanks from me to you for dealing with the 'bots." Cinn shrugged. "By the way,....how opposed are you to...a feather shower?" Since Acacius probably wouldn't leave Shark Bite alone until he got his quarry... They may as well try to prepare the blue hedgehog for the inevitable.
"You're the guide," Shark Bite grinned and nodded, peacefully unaware of Acacius- for now. "Whichever way is fine with me, as long as we reach our destination." He adjusted his hold on his metallic arm as he followed Cinn. He couldn't help but appreciate the architecture of the place as well; there was so many places and so many ways to run! Yup, definitely coming back here, the fact he hadn't already was a bit of a shock but, hey, no time like the present. "I know I sound like a broken record but thanks again!" Shark Bite said. "And if you need any help with those tin cans again, well, just give me a call! I can give you my number."

No way Hargrove. No goddamn way.
That was Steve’s mental response when he saw where Billy had taken them. He would have been fine with anywhere, literally anywhere at all other than the vast span of beach that spread out before them.
Billy had recently gotten very into fitness again. It wasn’t really anything that surprised Steve, his boyfriend cared deeply about his image and feeling like he looked his best made the heavy thoughts significantly lighter. Usually it was just the usual weightlifting and daily runs but this time he’d decided to go back to his roots.
Swimming.
Wild water swimming. Like, in the ocean swimming. Something Steve would rather dance across burning coals than do.
He stared at the lime green swimming trunks with some suspicion, poking them with a distrusting toe. Billy of course was already naked, wrestling into the smallest, reddest speedo known to man.
Steve suddenly was hit by a dizzying wave of deja vu as he remembered watching Billy sitting atop a lifeguards chair in shorts the exact same colour. Clearly, some things never changed.
He was dragged by the hand of a very excited blonde torpedo and then he was standing in the water, covered just above his feet. Just standing there. Adjusting.
It wasn’t that Steve particularly disliked swimming, in fact he was very good at it. The problem was that ever since what had happened with Barb in the pool, Steve had a severe mistrust of large bodies of water. He could deal with maybe a bathtub of the stuff but anything larger and he started to sweat.
A mistrust that he may have forgot to inform Billy about and was now trying to tackle head on.
The ocean was clear and calm and blue. Really, ideal conditions for a quick dip.
It was not the Harringtons pool in 1983. There was no demodogs or demogorgon or mindflayer somehow nestled underneath. He was fine. Billy was fine.
They were both fine.
Steve went in a little deeper and started to swim out.
Billy was of course pretty much almost done by the time Steve had gotten over his internal screaming match with himself but still grinned widely on seeing him, eyes crinkling.
They spent another five minutes in the water before Billy decided he was starving, smacked a kiss onto Steve’s lips and started wading out the water with the speed Steve imagined a cheetah pouncing would have.
He looked back briefly at Steve, holding out a hand.
“You ok Harrington?”
“Yeah I’m good.”
Steve could tell him another day. Today he’d just take this victory.
For @dragonflylady77 for her two year anniversary of being in the fandom and being the person who’s consistently kept me feeling safe and happy while I was at my lowest
