My ADD Medication Journey - Dec 18, 2023

12/18/2023 – Monday

1st dose taken at 7:30 am

Packed a couple of granola bars in my lunch to snack on one or two hours after taking meds

Was noticeably fatigued waking up despite getting a proper night's sleep

Don't recall being woken up in the night, felt like I slept the whole way through

About an hour after taking meds, noticed slight increase in energy

Possibly because I've completely woken up

Two hours and energy is good, focus is good

Not noticing any increase in tremor intensity

I intend to try two doses today

Friday's 2 doses and sleep suggest that acclimating to the change in chemistry is required

Insomnia might be a temporary side effect

Will note my findings tomorrow

Unsure if this is related to the medication or if it's just a point in a cycle

Noticing reduced craving for soft drinks (usually Coke)

Convenience of access still provides temptation, but it isn't as strong

Been drinking water more than anything else

Possibly just at a point where I'm less interested in the sugary taste

Possibly no longer needing the stimulation due to the medication

Unsure, but will continue to monitor

Noticing suppressed appetite, still eating my granola bars to prevent low blood sugar

Noticed uptick in tremors after eating, not enough to be a hinderance

2nd dose taken at 12:30 pm

Originally intended to take medicine at 11:30 am, but got wrapped up in work

I should try to set a regular schedule for taking my medication and put in a daily reminder on my phone

Today was the office Christmas party and lunch was provided

Unsure if there was enough citrus in the food to affect medication absorption

Not noticing any major changes in tremor intensity – though the office being so cold doesn't help

Focus is still good, mood is still good

As of 2:30 pm, still not terribly hungry and doing well

The rest of the day passed without incident

Did not notice any increase in tremors

Energy and mood remained at a good level

Appetite was not terribly strong by the time I got home, but ate dinner anyway

Interested to see if I sleep like I did on Friday, or at all

The fuck is up with being in eterna forest anyways?

{{ ooc: That was a development over multiple years of planning Jess's life! (I've been writing about xir for like. 16 years. what the h--)

Anyways! It sort of happened naturally, it wasn't the original intention or conscious decision. tl;dr Jess was happiest there in the story, a lady gave xir the cottage, and xe didn't have anywhere else that feels like home, so xe moved in there permanently after traveling the world and wanting to settle down. Also, easy access to Misdreavus. And I liked it, so Jess probably would too!

Jess was always meant to be a little on the goth side. I gave xir my love of the dark, and Eterna Forest is supposed to be dark Even In the Daytime. I made Jess just a LITTLE more nocturnal than I am, a little more photosensitive than me, a little more connected to spiritualism than me too. So like, Eternally Dark Forest with Native Ghosts? Naturally, xe liked the place!

It was already special because it was xir very first Destination on xir journey. Xe set out specifically to train a Misdreavus! So of course, in Sinnoh, that meant going to Eterna Forest. They leave to explore the world after finding the ghosts, getting to know each other, and training a bit, but xe enjoyed being there while it lasted.

When Jess and the team return to Eterna for the first time, they're all so HAPPY to be there. It just reached a point where I realized Jess and the team were always happiest in Eterna Forest. (Mistress is actually a big factor in that; while both she and Missie were born in Eterna Forest, Mistress didn't take very well to captured life at first, and she felt more at home in the wild. Eterna Forest felt more like home to her than anywhere else in the world.)

Jess deciding to live there permanently is also a factor of Other Story Elements. There's a part, waaay down the chronology from where A Work of Magic is published so far, where Jess seeks out this ghost expert xe found out about online. This lady lives in Eterna Forest because, frankly, I thought "spooky house off the beaten path deep in the dark woods" sounded eerie and understated and cool. It's part stereotypical ~Witch~ and part "The Old Chateau is Haunted so maybe the whole forest is too".

It's a long story, but basically Mistress couldn't use any ghost-type moves in the entire story up to that point, they had to work around it for contests and battling and everything. Jess had by then consulted lots of different people, asked their opinion, tried to work with experts including Mr. Fuji and The Move Tutor, even had about a week of training with ghosts in Lavender Town, and Mistress STILL couldn't use any ghost moves.

So when xe finds out about this underground expert on ghosts, Jess is desperate enough to bring Mistress (and the whole rest of the team AND xir best friend) to this lady. Who is also in Eterna Forest.

They wind up bonding, this is the lady Jess learns the most about ghosts and magic from, Jess and Sonia live there with her while training Mistress, and the lady ends up passing away, leaving Jess and Sonia her little cottage in the woods.

Jess and Sonia eventually move on, though. Jess checks on the place to keep it up to date, and as xe grows xe goes to other regions, but never feels "at home" anywhere else. The cottage is sort of xir default Home Base, because xe doesn't get along well enough with xir family, and they don't own any property to pass down anyways. Besides, xe's most at home among the dark and the quietude and isolation.

Conveniently, xe is a Massive Fucking Introvert and the cottage is off the beaten path, so there are very few people to bother them.

See also: the One Singular Year I spent living in an apartment complex tucked away in the local metroparks, at the edge of a wooded area, and it was my very favorite place I've ever lived. I miss it a lot actually. Being able to walk for 3 minutes and be at the river, or in the trees... the looks people gave me when they saw a cloaked person emerging from the woods at 11:32pm on a Tuesday night... >:} It was amazing. So, I maaaay be sort of living vicariously through the decision to keep Jess in the forest.

But mostly, it's just where Jess is happiest.

Two-dose ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine protection against COVID-19 hospital admissions and deaths over time: a retrospective, population-based cohort study in Scotland and Brazil

Background

Reports suggest that COVID-19 vaccine effectiveness is decreasing, but whether this reflects waning or new SARS-CoV-2 variants—especially delta (B.1.617.2)—is unclear. We investigated the association between time since two doses of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine and risk of severe COVID-19 outcomes in Scotland (where delta was dominant), with comparative analyses in Brazil (where delta was uncommon).

Methods

In this retrospective, population-based cohort study in Brazil and Scotland, we linked national databases from the EAVE II study in Scotland; and the COVID-19 Vaccination Campaign, Acute Respiratory Infection Suspected Cases, and Severe Acute Respiratory Infection/Illness datasets in Brazil) for vaccination, laboratory testing, clinical, and mortality data. We defined cohorts of adults (aged ≥18 years) who received two doses of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 and compared rates of severe COVID-19 outcomes (ie, COVID-19 hospital admission or death) across fortnightly periods, relative to 2–3 weeks after the second dose. Entry to the Scotland cohort started from May 19, 2021, and entry to the Brazil cohort started from Jan 18, 2021. Follow-up in both cohorts was until Oct 25, 2021. Poisson regression was used to estimate rate ratios (RRs) and vaccine effectiveness, with 95% CIs.

Findings

1 972 454 adults received two doses of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 in Scotland and 42 558 839 in Brazil, with longer follow-up in Scotland because two-dose vaccination began earlier in Scotland than in Brazil. In Scotland, RRs for severe COVID-19 increased to 2·01 (95% CI 1·54–2·62) at 10–11 weeks, 3·01 (2·26–3·99) at 14–15 weeks, and 5·43 (4·00–7·38) at 18–19 weeks after the second dose. The pattern of results was similar in Brazil, with RRs of 2·29 (2·01–2·61) at 10–11 weeks, 3·10 (2·63–3·64) at 14–15 weeks, and 4·71 (3·83–5·78) at 18–19 weeks after the second dose. In Scotland, vaccine effectiveness decreased from 83·7% (95% CI 79·7–87·0) at 2–3 weeks, to 75·9% (72·9–78·6) at 14–15 weeks, and 63·7% (59·6–67·4) at 18–19 weeks after the second dose. In Brazil, vaccine effectiveness decreased from 86·4% (85·4–87·3) at 2–3 weeks, to 59·7% (54·6–64·2) at 14–15 weeks, and 42·2% (32·4–50·6) at 18–19 weeks.

Interpretation

We found waning vaccine protection of ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 against COVID-19 hospital admissions and deaths in both Scotland and Brazil, this becoming evident within three months of the second vaccine dose. Consideration needs to be given to providing booster vaccine doses for people who have received ChAdOx1 nCoV-19.

This is 100% going to sound like I made it up, but while I was out on a hike in the woods, I found a dagger. Okay, fine it was really just a big knife, but still. It was just lying there half-hidden by leaves. It needs cleaned and sharpened, but it seems to be in pretty good shape.

So: an update! Guess how I spent my afternoon?

Okay, I've been working on repurposing the pages of that book I was talking about. I've done a few things with the pages (obviously there's a lot of pages, so I can do many things), and I kept in mind some of your recommendations.

Before I list what I've done so far, I should probably be as transparent as possible: this was a Harry Potter book I purchased about a decade ago, before, uh (gestures vaguely at the whole JKR situation). While I understand that paper is not alive, I'd like to think the these pages that I've repurposed are now a bit happier. Anyway:

I started by carefully ripping out any pages that were blank on at least one side. As an artist, it's always nice to have some extra drawing paper on hand, especially when drawing with friends or siblings. And these blank pages? Well (insert the "Free Real Estate" meme here)

I then removed any pages that had a reasonably large amount of blank space, cutting out the blank areas. Again, free drawing paper. Also, potential scrapbooking material. I've slid these pieces of paper into a barely-used sketchbook, for convenience.

Paper airplanes! Although I know one way to make a paper airplane, I looked up a few alternate methods on the internet, for the fun of it. If there were any pages that were mostly walls of text on either side, those ones were typically picked for this (as for any other paper-folding projects)

Speaking of paper folding: I tried to make an origami frog, but I accidentally made 2 of them. They're so tiny, they both fit on one of my hands. I shall name them Frog and Toad, after the iconic fictional couple.

Made a little envelope out of one of the pages, big enough to hold a small deck of cue-cards cut in half. This is because whenever I try to use flashcards to study, I just cut cue-cards in half and use those. Will this envelope actually be used for cue-cards, though? (Shrugs)

Anyway if anyone has any more ideas, feel free to send them here! After all, there's still a bunch of pages in this thing, meaning a bunch of possibilities.

Hey, random question. (I'll explain the context sometime later, so just bear with me for now).

Let's say that, hypothetically, while cleaning up my bookshelf, I found... a book that I don't want to have anymore. But for various reasons, I cannot donate this particular book to the library. What do I do with it?

Should I tear out the pages and make something new out of it? If so, what? Blackout poetry? Collage? Origami? Should I dabble in miniatures?

Obviously, Reading Week is almost done, so I can't really do anything immediately, except remove the book from the shelf. But it's been sitting in my room for months (at least, I assume. Who knows how long for sure). And I don't know what to do with it.

I wrote a bunch on the plane, so:

New Thing: to keep myself from just yelling at all times what my current word count is with no further context, I'll post it and whatever is currently happening, except it'll be a spoiler-free Describe Your Story As Badly As Possible version of what's happening (and if I can't even do that, then I can shush about the word count until I can).

havent written much recently so im gonna talk about/summarize some of my wips because i can (this ended up as all FFXV based ones oops)

-Mermaid AU: mostly pulling from the little mermaid and various mermay fics ive read. noctis and regis are at cape caem on vacation and while playing on the shore, noctis falls into the water and is saved by mermaid!lunafreya. the two eventually keep meeting up and talking. some specific things to bond over include magic and being prince/princess. soon after, the two do some kind of spell that turns lunafreya human. noctis helps her back up to the house from the shore, but its difficult going for the two of them since a) luna doesn’t know how to use her legs yet (and for parts like this, i was thinking of incorporating og little mermaid stuff, like every step hurting) and b) helping luna aggrevates noctis’s old injury (as something i was trying to keep in line with canon).

dont really have more than this, but a possible second half of this would go like this: regis wakes up in the morning and when going to wake noctis up, also finds an unknown girl in noctis’s room. he tries to figure out who she is and whats shes doing here from noctis, but only gets the full answer from luna later. would mostly be regis trying to figure out what he’s supposed to do when he finds out she’s a mermaid princess (with magic!) who’s effectively just run away from home

-Fateswap AU: Noctis is the oracle and luna is the chosen king. main focus on noctis, ignis, and prompto. main “story” i have is noctis and ignis are plotting to escape their niflheim guards, of which prompto is one. the two put their plan into motion: noctis pretends to be sick, prompto goes to help/check out whats happening, and ignis disarms him. its right at that moment that prompto decides yes, he really does want to defect and can he go with them pretty please? ignis thinks its a bad idea, but noctis does agree. thats where i initially ended my outline, but i can see expanding it to include some roadtrip stuff, but its harder to find a solid stopping point after that

-Insomnia: started this one with “somnus couldn’t sleep” purely bc i find the irony amusing and i have fun writing hooks. then i had to work backwards with why he wasn’t able to sleep and it turned into one of my standard introspection oneshots. ends up more as a reflection on being in someone’s shadow/being expected to be like/just as good as an older sibling and deciding to do your own thing despite expectations/comparing yourself to others. this one partially arose because i was on an ardyn & somnus kick as seen in my next wip

-Somnus gets the ring: this one is a mix of gap-to-fill type of fanfic and wanting to do something with the high messengers (theres 24 messengers, but we only see a few of them. soo... [insert free real estate meme here]). I had fun coming up with a High Messenger OC for this, who i mostly based as being an opposite of gentiana in appearance and is dressed a bit like a roman soldier. i also sort of incorporate my HC that the gods/bahamut/messengers very rarely interact with the line of lucis and don’t tell them much when they do. this would be dialogue heavy which is where im getting stuck.

my current outline for the story goes like this: somnus realizes he’s in a dream and in front of him is the crystal and a soldier. somnus quickly realizes the man’s not human, but something divine. the messenger delivers what he’s supposed to say from bahamut and theres a bit of back and forth as somnus tries to pry more info out of him. somnus eventually accepts (almost a vow-ish type thing) and wakes up with the gem of the ring in his hand.

-regis, noctis, and the crystal: takes place when noctis is really little, before regis finds out he’s the chosen king. main thrust would be its cute, and a bonding moment as regis teaches noctis about the responsibility that comes with their (literal) god given powers. events would be: noctis has been slipping out of his room to sleep on the throne room steps (which i HC the throne room to be right above the crystal). regis takes this as a good opportunity to teach noctis about the crystal, their magic, and the duties the gods gave to them as the world waits for the chosen king. they go to see the crystal and noctis finds himself both drawn in and frightened by the crystal and the magic (his magic).

i’ve been trying to figure out what cybertronian geology is like for years and so far i don’t have many conclusions, but i fuckin love the ones i do have lol. Here’s my ramble, part New Shit and part stuff i posted on a different site a couple years back:

Primus (Cybertron) and Unicron (Earth) are entities that are kind of like interstellar whales, or alternatively, vacuum cleaners. They float around the cosmos in search of Space Dust that contains interesting and useful elements, which is gobbled up, mined for tasty bits, and stored in a planetoid body around their cores. Under normal circumstances, the core entity is continually and actively moving stuff around inside the planet, meaning that these planets tend to be extremely tectonically active and thin of crust. 

Beneath the stored Space Dust, there's a 'skeleton body' that can be built upon, and if necessary the planetary body (which is mostly storage) can be shed/recycled to allow Primus to fuck off and do whatever without carrying a whole planet around. However, shedding this extra mass results in the destruction of the planet - so it's kind of a last resort, as long as you give a fuck about what's crawling around on your surface. 

Primus' 'skeleton body' folds down into an 'alt-mode' that's more or less an enclosure for a primordial spark. Primus, recovering from the battle against Unicron, went dormant for a long time, entering this alt-mode form and drifting through the young universe, collecting Space Dust along the way. Primus used these collected minerals to recuperate, and then had the great idea of creating the Thirteen - which were also formed out of that space dust, purified and alloyed together by Primus and given life with a spark split from Primus' own. And then the Thirteen got together and had their own kids, and Primus was like "Ah. I have grandchildren."

Primus has therefore spent the last 4.5 billion years more or less napping, meaning that Cybertron is much more stable than it ought to be. It still has some pseudotectonics, but the result of this activity is more like when you have a restless night’s sleep and you wake up and all the blankets have fallen off to one side lol. There is not as much internal heat inside Cybertron as there is on Earth; the role of convection is mainly filled by various Primus Bullshit processes, like the giant fuckin arms that rove (extremely slowly) through the mantle, looking for the snacks Primus hid at the back of the metaphorical fridge eons ago and forgot about. These arms also channel the byproducts of Primus’ consumption back up to the surface, where these byproducts occasionally become useful to Cybertronians.

This happens mainly in rift zones, alongside volcanic and pseudovolcanic features which are essentially god farting. Volcanism is rare and tends to be of the gaseous, explosive variety because of cooler internal temperatures and the way everything comes to the surface all jumbled together.  

There are... three? layers to Cybertron:

the central core, which is relatively small and all Primus. The core is immobile, most of the time (pls insert the free real estate meme here, only with Megatron holding some dark energon) because if the core moves, Shit Is Going Down.

an intermediate layer, which is made up primarily of sensibly-arranged Space Dust. Like Earth’s mantle, it is a solid which acts like a liquid over sufficiently large timescales, meaning , There’s also some of Primus' skeleton arms and a few extra structures left over from when the Thirteen were being built and trained, such as the Well of All Sparks. Primus maintains these bc it’s nice to be able to talk to the grandkids once in a while.

and then a surface layer which is more or less analogous to the Earth's lithosphere, formed of the most recent Space Stuff acquired by Primus (during the Dynasty of Primes and especially the Cataclysm). This forms a single but not 100% whole tectonic plate which gets stretched and thinned and crumpled up in places due to Primus’ pseudotectonic activity.  There are crumple zones, such as the Main Divide and the Manganese Mountains, where two regions of the surface are being pushed together and thickening, folding, fracturing and welding back together under the pressure. There are fracture zones, where the surface is being pulled apart in all sorts of directions and so the crust thins and a complex system of rift valleys and depressions opens up - one of these runs from the northeastern Sea of Rust up into the Mitteous Plateau, a former crumple zone now being worn down by erosion.

Unicron on the other hand got well and truly knocked tf out by the Thirteen, allowing the planetary mantle of the Earth to develop more or less like a normal rocky planet. This meant that a lot of the best elements sank down to Unicron’s core on their own and Unicron is now both fast asleep and absolutely lost in the nickel/iron sauce.

you dont have to answer if you dont want bc its not your job im just trying to understand and not mess up - is the answer that non-ace fans stop writing jon/canon ace characters in sexual situations or to be more considerate with it? or is it a question of appropriateness - maybe don't write pwp, but if its part of a larger work as long as its handled respectfully its alright? and on a similar vein, should non-ace readers be consuming nsfw content of ace characters?

Well, I might as well write a majority of my recommendations here.

In my opinion, allos are welcome to write jon/canon ace characters in sexual situations. However, this is most appropriately done if they have someone who identifies as asexual do a read-through of the fic before they post. That way they can point out any issues that there might be with how the author handled Jon’s asexuality or point out nuances that an allo person might not pick-up on. So basically, get an asexual beta! There are plenty of aces who would be happy to read through your fic to give you feedback, if you reach out and ask!

It also doesn’t hurt to tag the fic with what flavor of ace Jon is, whether it be sex-repulsed, sex-neutral (yes sex-neutral aces may have sex) or sex-positive, or something in between. For example, I have a good friend who tagged her fic: “Ace subtype: mostly no but sometimes yes”. 

As long as allos are usually running their fic by an ace beta and tagging appropriately, they are more than welcome to write pwp or longfic, or whatever their heart desires!

Should non-ace readers be consuming nsfw content of ace characters? Ace people are still people! You are welcome to consume nsfw content of ace characters! In fact, I welcome and encourage it (obviously, only if it’s your thing) because there’s so many amazing fics out there that handle nsfw situations with Jon well, and would serve as a fantastic learning opportunity so you can see the many perspectives of how we view sex. You can see how asexuals write Jon denying sex, grossed out by sex, experimenting with sex, trying sex out and disliking it, or enjoying it enthusiastically. I think it’s amazing for allos to see how we see ourselves through Jon, and get familiar with a different viewpoint!

As you can see, I do not subscribe to the viewpoint that “because Jon is heavily implied to be sex-repulsed in canon, this means it’s inappropriate to write him in sexual situations.” There are so few asexual characters out there right now, and we (those who ID as ace) flocked to TMA because of Jon. Jon is a character that is so important to a lot of aces (me included) because he’s is one of the few ace characters we have to project upon and are able to write about how we feel about our asexuality through him, no matter where we fall along the asexual spectrum. [Insert “It’s free real estate” meme]

And, of course, this is not to say that sex-repulsed Jon isn’t great too! In fact, I primarily write sex-repulsed (or could be read as neutral) Jon because that’s what I’m most comfortable with. Allos who are interested in exploring this aspect of Jon’s character should feel welcome writing about it or including it in their fics, and of course, get an ace to read over it to make sure it’s not written disrespectfully!  (i.e., not wanting to have sex DOES NOT equal asexuality, asexuals feel a lack of sexual attraction and the sex-repulsed subtype also feels repulsed by the idea of sex). 

(Mini fandom history time: Over a year ago, a majority of the nsfw fics involving Jon were actually almost all written by aces, because we were SO excited to have an ace character who we could play around with! As the fandom has grown, this has obviously shifted a bit, but still. I have my favorite fic writers who write excellent nsfw Jon fics who are ace or have ace betas!)
