0 - The Fool - Dragon Quest (The Fool is infinite potential and is at the start of a long journey. DQ as a series is a long-running, is a bedrock of the medium, and has done its own takes on everything from pokemon to minecraft, and it either did it first or did it better.)

1 - The Magician - Metroid and Zelda (The Magician is the first person the Fool meets and is a guide for the journey. The Magician is associated strongly with teaching and with tools. Metroid and Zelda both are foundational works and they revolve around gating player process through tools.)

2 - The High Priestess - FEZ (The High Priestess is another guide, but sits before the veil, keeping guard over arcane, hidden knowledge and deciding when to share the secrets of the universe. FEZ is one of the Big Games that hide under layers and layers of mystery.)

3 - The Empress - Stardew Valley (The Empress presides over growth and cultivation of her kingdom, sitting in a field with wheat in hand. SDV is chiefly about taking care of your own domain, the farm and the wider village.)

4 - The Emperor - Civilization (The Emperor is the firm hand of government and can be an important navigator in chaos but also is angered by lack of obedience and losing control. Civ is all about steering every aspect of a nation and protecting it viciously.)

5 - The Hierophant - Pokemon (The Hierophant is a cultural, societal leader that gains power from people who believe similarly but subsequently is very set in their ways. Pokemon is a huge phenomenon that unites people of all ages, but also struggles heavily with innovation and progress.)

6 - The Lovers - Journey (The Lovers aren't necessarily smoochy-smoochy, but represent a Decision, joining hands with another person and striding into the future together. It's Journey. If you know, you know.)

7 - The Chariot - Bethesda's Catalog (The Chariot is a tumultuous, potent card. They hold onto the reins of powerful beasts and drive forward, blazing a new path. But if they lose grip, everything goes to hell. Bethesda's works tend to have this incredible ambition to them, and when they hit, they HIT, but when they miss, it's dramatic.)

8 - Justice - Dark Souls (Justice is the system and its enforcement of its rules, whether they feel fair or arbitrary. I feel DS fits it well-- it relentlessly follows its own rules and is firm in them, which can either draw players in or seem cruel and unwelcoming.)

9 - The Hermit - Immortality (The Hermit is a wise person who gained specialized knowledge but through great personal sacrifice. They find it difficult to share their knowledge because they essentially traded that ability to communicate easily for the wisdom. Immortality has some deeply complicated concepts to communicate, but its methods and the basic mechanics it uses are to some people impossible to understand.)

10 - (Wheel of) Fortune - Spelunky (Fortune is the card of pure luck and the whims of fate and how you survive being caught in its spokes. Spelunky is a pure Rogue-like as opposed to a Rogue-lite and there is no knowing what the procgen will give you.)

11 - Strength - Undertale (Strength is specifically about emotional control and fortitude. It's not about slaying the lion, but holding it, keeping it from lashing out. Undertale is a game that asks the player to endure emotional struggles both against the mechanics and against their own inclinations.)

12 - The Hanged Man - Signalis (OH BOY ITS MY FAVE CARD. The thing about the Hanged Man is that it's a test, a gamble, a deal. The Hanged Man is not hung from the neck, this is not an execution, they are inverted. They choose to be inverted in the hopes of gaining some Insight into the universe, but in doing so risk madness or obsession or doom. Signalis is both a game about a protagonist going through this and also a game that will put the player through this if they aren't careful.)

13 - The Nameless Arcana - Braid (I'm not even personally a fan of Braid, but I believe it is one of the handful of Original Indie Games. The very existence and popularity of Braid and its contemporaries showed that games outside the big studios could hit big. Braid (or Cave Story for the PC crowd) altered the landscape.

14 - Temperance - Yakuza (Temperance is the melding of disparate elements that should not go together into something grand and new, and maintaining that balance. Yakuza manages to be genuine and profound not in spite of its strange mixture of tones and mechanics but because of them.)

15 - The Devil - Genshin Impact (I don't feel the need to elaborate on this one.)

16 - The Tower - Shenmue (The Tower is total upheaval and where it all comes crashing down, where ambition crumbles and brings an institution down with it. Shenmue is not solely to blame for the failure of the Dreamcast and Sega's exit from the console arena, but it contributed to it and is emblematic of that seachange.)

17 - The Star - Mass Effect (The Star is a beacon in the darkness, a distant light that indicates not so much a goal, but that the journey will continue. Mass Effect is a landmark title that maybe didn't execute on half the things it tried, strangled by its own scope, but it still showed what games could do, broadening the possibility space. It is hope for greater experiences and art.)

18 - The Moon - Metal Gear (The Moon illuminates the path through the darkness, but creates illusions in the reflections, demanding the querent move forward with care or they will go astray, go mad. Is Metal Gear really deep? Is it the closest triple-A games get to arthouse? Does it have meaning? Or is it a mess? Is it too Problematique to justify it's big ideas? Is it all just really, really stupid? Or is it genius?)

19 - The Sun - Tetris Effect (The Sun comes at the end of a long, arduous journey. It is the sigh of relief, the tears of release, the light to finally see how far you've come. Tetris Effect is the latest iteration of one of the oldest formulas ever, and it's brilliant and celebratory and invites everyone to take part in its joy.)

20 - Judgement - Pathologic (Judgement is all-seeing and all-knowing, the final tally and the reckoning. So is Pathologic. Few experiences demand so much from the player, and few games are so brutally honest in answering the player's decisions. In Pathologic, you will get what you deserve.)

21 - The World - The Outer Wilds (The beginning is the end is the beginning. Completion and totality and holistic understanding of Everything. It's gotta be Outer Wilds.)

Chimera Arcana Lore Guide: Realms and the Physical Universe

The composition of the universe can be described in the most basic way as a supermassive web of unstable matter, suspended in an endless void. Scattered along this web are bubbles of stability known as Realms, which contain within the conditions that allow life and civilization to exist and thrive.

While the size of the universe and the number of realms is theoretically infinite, there are only about 150 Realms which are in contact with each other; most of these exist in one of two closely connected clusters, which are named the Astral Domain and Edaxian Domain. The remaining Realms can be found in the void between the two clusters, which is called the Great Division.

Realms can come in a wide range of sizes, with the largest being about half the surface area of Earth, and the smallest being only a few kilometers in length. They are all cylindrical in shape, as a Realm’s Seal, which helps keep the entropy of the outside universe from destabilizing the Realm’s interior, will always wrap completely around a segment of the universal web. All realms contain both a Sun and a Moon; the Sun being a disc of pure energy embedded on the seal, which provides a Realm with light and heat, and the Moon being a spherical ball of matter that orbits around the Realm’s surface, nearly outside but still within the seal. What purpose a moon provides, as well as their very nature is still shrouded in mystery, as no known person have managed to successfully land on a moon’s surface.

So this is the first entry in a series of images and writing that I have been working on for over a year; the Chimera Arcana Lore Guide! The intent of this series is to go over any info that may be helpful to know before the webcomic properly begins. This is all optional info, though; none of this will be strictly necessary to read in order to understand the story.

Akechi, Yusuke, and Hifumi all go to the same school, but because akechi is a 3rd year they don't interact pretty much at all.

Tucker and Futaba would either be absolute best friends who already knew each other through the hacking community or worst enemies and I can't decide what's better

A half written first chapter for this stg I am not writing more someone else do it please

Danny ends up yeeted into Japan after the last episode of his original series, except it didn't go as well as canon, his parents had only faked their acceptance, in all truth once they'd gotten home, he'd been subjected to months of experimenting, jazz had left for college soon after and didn't know anything and Danny, poor Danny, was letting this all happen to himself because he had convinced himself it was out of love, for the greater good. Eventually, he was broken out of this cycle by his friends who'd spent this whole time trying to free him, and once they did they beelined it for the ghost portal, to get as far away as they could, they took Danny to clockwork as they assumed he'd know best what to do next, and he did. He sent Danny to akechi and his friends back to their homes.

Danny, now with extreme PTSD and lots of new scars to go with it, is completely out of it when he first bumps into akechi. He just kinda ends up in the middle of Akechi's living room, staring at his hands and silently crying, and akechi, who just got home from school and watched this child fall out out a portal onto his carpet, considers calling the police for a second before realizing if he filed a report like that it would absolutely fuck his image, headlines like "detective prince akechi finally snapped?" "Child star gone crazy!" "Young detective claims child 'fell out of portal' more on this at 9" and ultimately decides that he will deal with this problem himself. Armed with his (fake because it's for the metaverse and legally he can't own one) gun akechi slowly approaches him and nudges the back of his head, and suddenly his problem disappears, quite literally, into thin air.

Danny, who absolutely panicked at being broken out of his meltdown by the feeling of cold metal against the back of his head (hmmmm how many things could this remind him of, so so many) had gone invisible and fuckin booked it to the closest corner, his mind not clear enough to get him any further, and his energy not high enough to sustain the invisibility. He was curled in a ball arms crossed out in front of him in an attempt to shield himself.

Akechi snaps to attention as suddenly the child is back but in a completely different location, seemingly much more afraid than before. Akechi thinks about it for a moment before lowering his gun and kneeling onto one knee from where he stood, raising his hands in a sign of surrender, to try and show he no longer means harm.

"Hey, it's ok, can I get you some water?"

Clearly being on the offensive wasn't going to make progress and now akechi was much more interested in this boy than he had been.

He runs through a list of things he was taught to do to deescalate a situation. Try basic questions, offer reassurance, space, and make sure not to move too quickly or unpredictably, that last one will be a little hard since his guest is in an unknown place so no matter what he does it'll be unpredictable.

Danny lowered his hands which had started shaking, waiting for the hurt, the next step, something, after hearing the older boy in front of him speak, he said something about water? Danny thought for a moment, this is all a trap, or not real, or both, or maybe hey, just maybe he finally actually died. In which case, the actions he was now taking meant nothing anyways. He opened his mouth to speak but only a hoarse impression of an attempt at speech came out, so instead, he nodded. He was so entirely unsure of his situation, and the tears wouldn't stop, god he just wanted to help, he did everything they asked, so why did it never sto- Danny closed his eyes painfully tight and repeated the word no to himself mentally in an attempt to stop his thoughts from going where they were.

Akechi winced at the sound of the boy's voice, could it even be called that, but took note of the small nod and stood to go retrieve water. Once he had the drink in hand he stood about 5 feet away from the boy and spoke again.

"Can I come over and hand this to you?" He needs to make sure not to send him further into whatever sort of attack he was having, so being overly careful about all his actions was the least he could do.

Danny he was just barely starting to regain his ability to actually breathe, shook his head no rapidly, but had no idea how to communicate his wants without his voice.

"I'll just set it on the floor right here then and go back to where I was"

Was this man an angel? How did he know what Danny wanted, when he hadn't spoken a word? Danny gave an agreeing shake to his head this time and waited for the man to go back and sit down before essentially crawling over to the cup. He relished in the feeling of the water running down his throat, of the concept of kindness being shown to him, for the first time in months.

Akechi waited for the boy to calm fully and seem more at ease before saying he was going to get bedding for him, he'd set him up on the couch, and get him some food (not that akechi had much to offer, but he was sure he could find something) and letting him rest for the night.

What a strange fucked up situation this was, akechi wasn't sure how to feel about any of it, but he did have a growing sense of pity for the boy. He'd clearly been through something, and the whole falling out of thin air onto his floor definitely didn't help. Goro didn't exactly want to subject this child to the things he himself had been through when Shido was experimenting with his abilities, so he'd keep him confined to his house for now while he sorted it all out. On the other hand, akechi doesn't trust this unknown at all, so he'd call in sick to school in the morning, and take a few days off, his grades shouldn't suffer too much given his aptitude for memorization, but it wouldn't exactly be pleasant either.

Speaking of unpleasant things, akechi checks his phone for the time, and looks at the news before sighing and softly telling the boy he was going to sleep, and pointing out where his room and the bathroom were in case either was needed. Goro also knew in the back of his mind somewhere that telling this stranger who had literally disappeared and reappeared right in front of his eyes earlier, where he slept wasn't exactly the brightest idea, but he also knew he wouldn't be sleeping tonight, too busy researching and trying to figure anything he could out. He'd even need to be careful of what he looked into though, considering the kind of mistrust and surveillance Shido had of him, wouldn't want to tip him off now would we?

Danny took the bedding given to him and hulled himself up in a corner ready to stay awake the rest of the night on high alert, or he would have if it wasn't suddenly a completely different time of day, Danny swears he only blinked but in that moment his body must have shut down, after such a long period of abuse and lost sleep, it must have deemed this a safe enough environment to sleep. What had woken him up though was the sound of something falling, he assumes it came from the kitchen nearby, but he hadn't been conscious enough on the outside to process anything else that happened, in fact, he'd almost immediately started panicking again.

Goro poked his head into the living room to see the boy wide awake and staring into nothing with a sense of panic. He wanted to apologize, but he felt speaking and startling the kid out of that state would only make it worse. Maybe he himself had needed to sleep more than he'd imagined though, because as bad at cooking as he was, dropping a frying pan was a new one. What was he even doing with the pan to begin with? He couldn't remember now, the pounding sound had rattled his brain too much.

Yet another card in the series!

The Magician is (technically) the beginning of the Major Arcana, being the card to officially hold the '1' position.

I have a big, long analysis under the cut so if you're interested in that, please read it lol. I spend a lot of time thinking about symbolism and I would love for people to talk with me about it!

But anyway, let's begin with an analysis of Majima as The Magician:

The Magician, being at the very start Major Arcana still has the youth and the drive of the Fool while also knowing a bit more about what they want. This want fuels them and unlocks their magical potential.

And let's talk a bit about magic. The Magician in their original card holds one wand up to the sky while pointing to the ground. This is a representation of the phrase 'as above so below'. In its most basic form, this is the belief that the beings who created the Earth imbued that magic into everything on the planet.

The reason I chose Majima for this card is that, in many ways, he's super magical himself. We see this the most in 0 where he took the Grand, a failing Cabaret, and made it into the heart of Sotenbori. He was some scrappy kid with no prior knowledge of management who somehow made his impossible situation the best it could possibly be.

And we see throughout Majima's life that things just work out for him.

(Spoilers for Yakuza 1/Kiwami, 2/Kiwami 2, and 4)

There's the absolutely ICONIC scene where he disarms a bomb with his fucking intuition, and then in the beginning of the Majima Saga, he says something along the lines of 'I can make a lot of money if I try'. Money has never been something that Majima couldn't make. It comes to him if he just. Desires it.

And there are other examples of Majima putting himself into situations where he's grievously injured and just... bouncing back from them.

There's the scene 1 where he's stabbed in the baseball center (or shot at the piers depending on which game you're playing) and although he's taken to the hospital, he's fine like. The next day.

In 2, he fights off an entire army of men and sure he's pretty beat up, but he's up and running around not long after.

He does this again in 4 where he's able to fight off an obscene number of guys when Shibata is telling him not to go to Saejima. Although Majima is more permanently injured in this instance.

And we can partly chalk these fantastical elements to Yakuza's crazy world. Magical things can and have occurred in this universe before. For example, Tachibana's little stunt where he turns off the lights in Kamurocho for a few seconds doesn't have a non-magical explanation other than 'this is the power of money'.

He can say that all he wants, but there is not way to explain what happened without a fantastical element.

But even within the strange universe of the Yakuza games, Majima is still an outlier. Nishida is surprised that Majima was disarming that bomb with his fucking. Intuition. All the other officers at the Clan meeting were shocked at the amount of money Majima brought in.

The infinity sign above the Magician's head (obviously) symbolizes the infinite potential of the Magician-- their ability to utilize their drive or their intense desires to get what they want. And in the crazy universe that Majima's in, he's recognized as an outlier and is both respected and feared for his magical potential.

Another reason I chose Majima's Y0 self for the role of Magician is because the Magician serves as a connection between the divine forces above and the people on earth. That's why they're pointing up and down. Because not only do they understand the origin of magic, but they are also able to communicate with both sides.

While Majima is temporarily out of the Tojo Clan in 2, he functions largely the same as if he were still a member.

Majima in 0 however is a civilian. He's so much a civilian that Shimano scrubbed any records of him off the books. Despite this civilian status, he aches to return to the Tojo Clan so he can make a place for Saejima, his sworn brother (or so Saejima can kill him).

Whereas Majima in 2 is largely content with his life outside of the Yakuza, Majima in 0 does not have the same luxury. He's doing work for the Yakuza (in this case Sagawa), but functions largely as a civilian until Sagawa ultimately gives him the hit. Even then, his kindness keeps him from severing that link between himself and civilian life, leading to the later events of the game.

But let's also want to touch a bit on the Reversed version of the Magician.

While the Magician Upright is authentically magical, the Reversed is a charlatan. They're using flashy tricks to distract and manipulate, not to inspire.

In 0, Majima is pretty thoroughly tricked by Shimano.

Shimano knew Majima so well that he used his own morals against him. And because Majima was so blinded by his desire to return to the Tojo clan, he fell for the lies.

It could also be interpreted that Majima, while in the process of tracking down and killing Makoto, was exhibiting much of the same qualities. He breaks into Hogushi Kaikan, he lies to Makoto about why he's there, and even after he saves her from the Yakuza trying to kill her, he still contemplates breaking her trust and murdering her.

We see glimpses of the Magician Reversed in these attempts to deceive, but ultimately, the reason Majima doesn't keep trying to take advantage of people like Makoto is that hurting people in that way is just not how he's built.

By the time the events of Yakuza 1 happen, we see that Majima has become a more violent, selfish person, but I would argue that's partly due to Shimano's influence. Once Shimano dies, Majima seems to mellow out immediately. Even before he leaves the Clan, he's not as outwardly violent or angry. He's still clever and he knows how to get what he wants, but he doesn't lean on violence as much.

And then when he leaves the Clan? He immediately starts building something. Sure it's just a mall, but I always thought this shift from destruction to creation was so interesting. Especially because Majima actually finishes Kamurocho Hills.

In this small character beat, I think we can see the essence of the Magician tarot card.

A true Magician creates while a false one deceives and destroys.

Valerian Cassano | Death Sits In Their Garden, Death Rules Them All

Some lore fanfic about the ties of Anatole’s family with magic, and the most powerful witch among them all: Valerian Cassano, great grandfather to Anatole, and in the Cassano-verse, also grandfather to Valerius.

There weren’t many witches or magicians amongst both the Cassano and the Radošević. Magic was a scarce gift in their family, jumping generations or from one collateral to another, manifesting in specific gifts most of the time. Maybe more of them would be tied to magic if their political tradition wasn’t so strong, or if they simply knew better. It is hard to give a name to that which we don’t know, to that which we simply take as fact.

The topic was rarely openly discussed; it wasn’t taboo, nothing was between them. Instead, it had become something only those with magical abilities themselves discussed. As long as they were aware they had them, of course. Who else would understand? 

So you had Anatole, the man of light and languages, the favourite of the Gods of the Sun, as his more religious relatives would say. You had Amparo, Lady Death, the girl of sand and glass. Milenko, the poet born in water. You had Vlad, the alchemist. You had had Anzano, may they find rest, the Priest. Yet, as present and even notorious as their magic could be, none of them bore the gift and the weight Valerian Cassano did.

Not many people knew about it.

Ironically, as the same would happen to his grandchildren Vlad and Valerius years later, Valerian was not raised by his parents but by his aunt Hyppolita Valperga. Hyppolita was a clever woman, who laughed little; ambitious and stoic, yet still warm in her own way. Valerian wasn’t much like her, he was much more like his mother Carmina, Hyppolita’s sister.

Yet he had gotten one thing from Hyppolita — other than what being raised by her gave him: her necromancy.

Hyppolita was an outcast of necromancing circles herself. The magical art had fallen in disgrace out of the greed and corruption of some, something which austere, upright Hyppolita (or ‘Lilita, as only her husband could call her) could not condone. “They,” she used to say with a weary sigh, “pretend to become Death themselves. They are not Death, for they rule nothing. We are simply messengers of death-energy, conductors of it. Everything which we bring back to this world is a loan, Death themselves has made us.”

“They will die again, Valerian. Everyone always does.”

The one indulgent thing Hyppolita allowed herself, was her orchid garden. Valerian remembered her sitting in it, humming a song to herself — a song old and arcane, belonging to her own Death God, or rather, the version of Death she approached.

“Death is one and the same, Valerian,” she would say among her abnormally vivid orchids. They almost seemed to whisper, almost alive. “Death is one and the same for everyone. The Death Arcana, the Gods of Death of different cultures — like Morana, your friend Elysian’s Goddess of death — they are all one Death. Death is equal, death is not boisterous. Death does not want you to die, why would it? You will die anyway, and wanting has nothing to do with it.”

Hyppolita’s Death was a, was a... was— Valerian had no words for it. Hyppolita had taken him through the realms thrice to meet Death, and once he had gone alone. To ask questions to a being vaster than he will ever dream of being, small and insignificant and mortal. Death seized him up like he was as light as air.

Hyppolita’s Death’s voice was a sound Valerian was never able to hear anywhere else.

“Something is happening to Death, something has already happened to it, Valerian. We are witnessing the Death of something which cannot be killed.”

As he grew up, he always thought Hyppolita was being unnecessarily ominous. When he became older he realised it wasn’t Hyppolita that was ominous, it was him who did not understand. It would be many years before he understood.

In the interim, he became of age, and with becoming of age, he chose a profession. He did not become a doctor, like Aunt Hyppolita was, instead he became an actor. To his surprise, his aunt approved of it: “An actor is a vessel, just like a necromancer is. You have a wonderful voice, Valerian, use it. Death will be always there to guide you.”

Hyppolita was right, in her own way. She tended to be. Valerian was 22 when he realised he did not see things as the majority of people did, that he did not affect things like the rest of people did. The more he studied, the better he became at acting, the more he practised, the better he became at necromancy. However, per his aunt’s request, he told no one. Those who knew would know, and those whom he hadn’t told but knew anyway are the ones Valerian should beware.

That’s how he met Quaestor Valdemar.

The Quaestor was a void. Their skin dewy like the most alive of youth, yet ashy like a corpse in the mortuary. Their eyes open and alert, with some of the longest eyelashes Valerian had every seen in someone, which was saying something: not only he was dating Iovanus Cassano, who had very full eyelashes, but he himself was known for his eyes: almond eyes with amber irises, an impossible shade of grey-golden and eyelashes like a fan.

The eyelashes weren’t enough to set aside the off sensation in them, nor the feeling that their eyes weren’t just on their face, but everywhere at once. The Quaestor simply felt wrong. They went to his plays for mere three weeks, yet was never seen in the audience nor ever commented about the nature of the play they just saw. The actors were not of their concern, nor their jobs.

They were there for Valerian.

He mentioned this to Hyppolita after the second time they came, as Iovanus was very disconcerted with the behaviour. “Caro mio,” he had said, “no one is exactly sure what Valdemar does. All I know is that my father refers to them as the Palace’s cockroach problem.”

Hyppolita always saw her nephew’s plays. All of them on the opening night, and the closing night, but never in between, but the mere mention of the Quaestor made her go to the next one.

“That’s odd, Aunt, I didn’t know you knew them.”

“I do not, and I have no intention to.” Valerian did not understand.

What the Quaestor wanted of him was to give him a book: a leather bound journal titled The Forge. Valerian hadn’t seen Valdemar in the audience, but he knew they would come anyway. Something, no, someone could tell him. It was a whispering in the hallways which came from no one, it was the life energy pulsating in things, it was the prickling sensation in his gums, the eyes on the back of his neck. It was the shrill voice of his Aunt Hyppolita’s death murmuring: Double, double.

The Quaestor was in his changing room, as they always were when the play ended, fingers gloved and— holding a book.

“Quaestor Valdemar, did you enjoy the play?”

Valdemar ignored him. “Do you know what this is? I believe this will help you where your true talent lies. You have much of it.” They smiled. Had their teeth always been that sharp?

“Is it about acting?”

“There’s no need to pretend with me. Why don’t you just take it, Valerian?”

Valerian never took it, not from the Quaestor at least. Hyppolita made it to his changing room before he even had a chance, treating Valdemar like an unruly pupil, with short, precise sentences about how they could go now and drop it, as Valerian was her child. Valerian could tell in the way she stood without taking her eyes of them that Hyppolita was afraid. He had never seen her afraid.

To his surprise the Quaestor left, and a week later Hyppolita asked him to have tea with her, and lock the room behind her.

“That book, The Forge is a compilation done by a naive Necromancer who thought compiling all the knowledge of people who thought themselves Gods would help someone. I do not want our art to be lost, but losing it also means corrupting it.”

Valerian only listened, sipping his tea in silence.

“Everything that’s in it— Valerian listen to me: I have never downplayed your gift. Never have I ever seen a Necromancer with such raw potential as you. You could do everything that is in this book with the necessary application and beyond. Maybe for some reason that I cannot explain you are such a remarkale actor because you have unused potential as a necromancer. Maybe both gifts are not related.”

She sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose with her gloved hands.

Gloved hands, just like the Quaestor’s. Just like the hands of many necromancers he had met.

“Aunt why do you use gloves?”

“Because I’m a Doctor.”

“Aunt.”

“Necromancy takes a toll on you: either in your life force, if you’re too rash, or in what you practice it with. We use our hands. Mine are in a deplorable state. Valerian if you ever wish to know how powerful a Necromancer is, look at their hands. Have you ever wondered why your hands are freckled and marked like an old person’s despite belonging to young skin?”

Valerian looked at his hands. Seeing that Hyppolita was right he sat on them, making his aunt laugh.

“You’ll be fine, if you are not rash with your gift. You can read this book if you like, I will mentor you... but do not accept it from the Quaestor — I do not know what Valdemar is, but I fear the answer, or a hint of it, is in this book. There are many an occult thing in this word, the arcane is not to be meddled with without knowing the consequences: magic comes with a price, life exists on the basis of Death, Valerian. You die on stage to bring life to a character. Life is nothing but an extension of that.”

“The realm of the Arcana are only 22, that is a limited number for such an infinite universe. Do not wander off. Do not become great at the price of becoming something you are not. This book whispers, and whatever voice you feed is the voice that, in your own self, becomes louder.”

From that day on Valerian studied with the same zeal he applied to his acting, and to those things in life which mattered to him. Valerian married Iovanus, and he studied necromancy. Valerian and Iovanus had a daughter, and he practised. That daughter, Matilda, grew and Valerian began using gloves — his hands hadn’t deteriorated as much as he feared, something his husband was grateful for, but he was afraid he would accidentally harm Matilda. He turned 31, slowly walking away from acting to involve himself with the affairs of the City, and he practised. 

Many things happened in his life: his daughter became an adult, she married herself, she had a child too young, and refused to take responsibility for it when Valerian or Iovanus were there, or her husband’s brother, Mircea, and his own husband, her cousin Florentino. Through doubt and fights, through love and reconciliation, Valerian lived between the living and the dead, his craft never leaving him.

Until his daughter died.

He didn’t remember anything of the first year after her death — after Mircea and Florentino decided they would take the children in, he sat on his grief and there he stayed numb for a year. The obsession came to him on the second year.

What had he done wrong? Hadn’t he been affectionate and educative as Hyppolita had been with him? Hadn’t Iovanus been attentive and had he not lead with example? No matter what they did, everything always went wrong, and Death...

Death. He knew Death: he could bring his daughter back. The thought ate at him, always in the tip of his tongue, always in the back of his mind. His hours melted and slipped away from him, his sleep was fitful, his meals scarce; every waking hour of many months blurred together into one question: what if they could do it all again? What if this time, they did it right? If this time Matilda would understand the duty of parenthood and the Consulship, so Iovanus never had to deny her the position, so her children knew her mother.

He could fix it, he could—

He looked at his hands. He had never noticed he had Hyppolita’s nail-beds. He could bring his daughter back, but at what cost? Would she be her? Would he bring her back only to repeat every single mistake? Were they mistakes? What was the price, how would he explain it? He would be a fool if he pretended to know everything that was out there, in every single realm. Bringing Matilda back would not change anything, but himself.

From that day on, Valerian stopped practising.

In the spot where he sat flowers bloomed the brightest, plants seemed to never wither or die. The rest of his family — the ones who do not know of his magic — as well as the waiting-staff of the Palazzo Cassano have stopped trying to make sense of it; old Valerian Cassano is pushing past the centenary in terms of age and is, by all means, well conserved. Most people assumed it has less to do with Valerian himself, and more to not having led a life of excess in his youth, aided by the resources the family he had married into had.

They were all wrong.

Valerian, well into the first decade over the hundred years of age had many reasons to live: he had Vlad, who had grown from an angry, hurt teenager, into a wonderful father and attentive husband. He had Valerius, so unlike his mother while having the same attitude of hers. So full of mistakes like himself, slowly trying to heal from things he did not speak of. He had Anatole, his bright, so very alive great grandson. He had Milenko who always read his poems to him, and he had his most wonderful pupil, Amparo.

Her magic was nothing like his, and for that Valerian was grateful.

He had stopped practising necromancy altogether. Only once he was close to admitting to anyone the reason why — a reason he hadn’t even told his husband, now dead. Valerius had come to him, sitting with him in the winter garden with his glass of wine in hand.

“You knew,” he said. A statement, not a question.

“Yes, of course I knew.”

“Why didn’t you say anything? You could’ve told anyone, you could’ve told Ae— you could’ve told Aelius.”

“I think he also knew, in his own particular way, but no one would gain anything from it. I did what I could, trying to make you open up for once in your life, but you’re stubborn as a ram.”

Valerius was quiet for a long time. “Can I tell you something?”

“Always, my child.”

As he spoke, he stopped being Valerius, the Consul, and instead became Valeriy, his grandson, confused and lost, prideful and complex as he had always been. Valerian listened as he told him about wine drinking rams, and realms beyond the realms they inhabit. Of goats and hungry devils.

Valerius stopped mid-sentence. “You already know this too.”

“Valeriy, have you ever wondered why haven’t I died yet?”

“To annoy all of us, surely.”

Valerian laughed. “You have Matilda’s attitude. Don’t look so guilty, I know you don’t remember her. That is her fault, not yours.”

Valerian looked at his nail beds, then straight ahead. “Once I had a great teacher, she taught me things I cannot teach you, don’t ask me what it is — she told me not to become great at the expense of becoming someone I am not. That is all I can teach you from this. Do not try to become someone you’re not.”

Valerius would ask him if he reminded him of her, to which Valerian would say no. As unlikely as it could be, his grandson did have a conscience, unlike his daughter. Valerius reminded him way more of the men who had raised him than his own daughter. Valerian had made his peace with it.

He remembered her, and that was enough. Even in death she was impossible to contact, but in all honesty Valerian hadn’t tried: he preferred to remain the father of a dead, irresponsible daughter, than become someone who trespassed the limits of his own craft so much, he became someone he could not recognise.

“Honesty can hurt,” Hyppolita had told him once ,“but those who run from pain are doomed to lose all capacity to remain human.”

"What, you really haven't heard of us? What kind of angel are you, we're- we're the freaking Winchesters."

In my last post, I looked at how I felt Castiel embodied the energy of the tarot card the Fool, card #0. Today I want to continue the tarot conversation by looking at the next card in line, the Magician. There are a lot of characters who fit this archetype, including Rowena, Lucifer, maybe even Gabriel or Jack. But for me, the real Magician is Sam.

I mentioned the Magician comes right after the Fool, our official card #1. Some people see the major arcana as a journey the Fool takes, taking different roles as the journey progresses, and some people see the figures that follow the Fool as characters that he encounters. Regardless, the Magician represents the same things, especially in relation to the Fool. Where the Fool indicates potential, faith, and naivety, the Magician indicates intention and direction. 

The card is usually depicted with a figure pointing one finger to the heavens and one to the earth, a table laid out with each of the four suits (or elements). The figure holds a magician’s wand, and bears an infinity symbol above their head. The imagery suggests access to resources and the infinite possibility for combining and using them. There’s a sense of manifestation, action, and willpower, but there’s no moral imperative for what kind of action is taken. This is why Bakara Wintner talks about the Magician as someone who "toes the line between the true miracle-worker and the trickster."

Sam has this resourcefulness. How many times has Sam tried something in the moment, based on previous knowledge and experience, and had it work out. Directing Dean to park on the hallowed ground of a fallen church in “Route 666.″ Painting their faces in blood to mask that they’re alive when Samhain is raised in “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Sam Winchester.” His impulsive—but successful—reverse-exorcism in “What’s Up, Tiger Mommy.” 

I think one of the key aspects of Sam’s resourcefulness is his confidence. He believes in the power of past experience to inform the present, and he trusts in his instincts. This is also part of being a Magician. I love how Melissa Cynova talks about the power of the Magician in a reading, how the card “represents self-love, self-awareness, and confidence. It's one thing to know for certain that you're going to do something. It's something altogether different to know for certain that you're going to succeed.” When I brought this up with Katharine, she brought up Sam’s response to Alistair in the final act of “On the Head of a Pin” when Sam cockily dismisses Alistair’s comment about Sam sending him back to Hell. “I’m stronger than that now,” Sam says with a smile. “Now I can kill.” And he does. 

Confidence, of course, doesn’t have to mean cockiness or arrogance. It doesn’t have to mean domination. And for Sam, his confidence is usually of a much softer sort. Katharine, our resident Sam-Whisperer, reminded me of this when she also brought up Sam’s words in “It’s a Terrible Life” regarding his life and hunting. "All I know is, I got this feeling in my gut. And I know—I know that deep down, you gotta be feeling it too. We're supposed to be something else." Sam’s sense of self is unshakeable, and his confidence in his own instincts in this moment is powerful. 

Then we have the quote I used to open this post. I was sort of iffy on using it—it falls a little back into that arrogant category that demon-blood-bender Sam really lives in. But the more I think about Sam stating what, in all honesty, I’m shocked neither Winchester says more often, the more I like it. Because Sam asking Metatron in “The Great Escapist” incredulously if he really hasn’t heard of them gets at the inherent Magician-ness of both Winchesters pretty neatly. We’ve stopped the Apocalypse, Sam seems to be saying. Defeated the Mother of All Evil, saved the world from Leviathans, survived Purgatory and Hell! What haven’t the brothers achieved? What magic haven’t they worked to still be standing after the horrors that they’ve faced? Sam has a right to wonder why the scribe of God has somehow missed the memo on God’s most chosen of children. 

Thinking of confidence and sense of self also makes me think about Benebell Wen’s take on the Magician. “To wield the intensity of concentration needed for omnipotent power, one must be strong in both spirituality and character,” she writes. “Thus, the Magician card often appears in spreads for those who are strong in spirituality and character. It is the card of individuality.” “Strong in both spirituality and character” alongside “the card of individuality” really calls Sam to my mind. Sam’s faith in those early seasons, his willingness to believe God may be talking to him even in season 11 after God has proven time and time again to be largely uninvested. Sam wanting to be a lawyer, wanting to help people. Taking charge and guiding the folks of Apocalypse World. Sam forging his own way after loss, after grief, after anguish. That is all evidence of his strength in spirit. That is strength of character. Sam maintains up until the final episodes of the final season that he and Dean’s righteous positions will find purchase, even when they are challenging God himself. Of the two brothers, Sam is ever the optimist, always willing to find a way to make a situation work. He will use what resources he has, what willpower he can still muster, and he will make something work or die trying. He’s both trickster, and miracle-worker, and his heart is always in the right place.

I want to close out this post by thinking of the Magician and Sam one final way, and that’s as a “vessel,” as Rachel Pollack sees the Magician. 

He is not casting spells or conjuring demons. He simply stands with one hand raised to heaven and the other pointed to the green earth. He is a lightning rod. By opening himself up to the spirit he draws it down into himself, and then that downward hand, like a lightning rod buried in the ground, runs the energy into the earth. Into reality.

She’s talking about the imagery of the card, and informing those of us who read tarot that, as the Magician is a conduit for spirit, so too are tarot readers. Through use of these tools, we become conduits to whatever is sending us the messages. This can be contested, of course, and isn’t a universal belief re: tarot. But it is, quite literally, the truth when it comes to Sam*. 

Sam is Lucifer’s vessel; he is a literal conduit or channel for divine intervention. He has the potential within him for great feats of power and violence, and with his past brushes with demon blood, this is a potential he is hyper-aware of and anxious about. Sam’s role as “lightning rod,” so to speak, is a lot of what drives his cultivation of spirit and character. Sam wants to do good, and wants to believe he is good, and he makes choices as the series goes on to live up to those desires. Sam’s worries about himself are aligned with the reversed energies of this card, such as the potential for manipulation, the misallocation of resources, and a lack of empathy. Essentially, the Sam we meet when he is soulless. 

Luckily for us and the others on the show, Sam largely lives in the role of the Magician defined by Melissa Cynova and Benebell Wen. He’s driven to do good and help people, putting his resourcefulness to work in the best possible way, the lore as his tools of his metaphysical trade. And, of course, by the close of the show, he’s also a bonafide witch, a literal magician on top of his Magician-like qualities. And we always love to see it.

*Also Sam is literally a witch. So. Jot that down.

The Tarot Directory by Sarah Bartlett

 Excellent introduction to the tarot that includes history, meaning, terms, use, care, and more. I loved the illustrations and that each page was colorful and informative.

 The book is divided into: Key to the basics, major Arcana, Minor Arcana and Spreads with interpretation of them. I liked that each card was presented with information relevant to it, ways to become more in tune with each card and then how to put them together in meaningful ways.

I have seen the idea of “getting to know the cards personally” and learning from and with them before but especially liked the way this and a few other ideas were offered and explained. This book had several spreads to use and ideas for spiritual growth while using the cards.

 This is a book I would like to add to my library and can see going through the decks I have one card at a time and getting to know them again and better than I have known them before.

Why We’re Never Going To Find Out How Saïx Got His Scar

Thanks! Pretty much all learned outside of school, haha. I don’t have a special background or anything. I am just an ordinary person drawn to strange subjects. I guess if I’m being honest, I became immersed in these subjects because I used to deal with depression, lol. I don’t anymore, but I still really love Axel’s character arc for that reason. He wanted to find hope. And he did.

His arc is based on the Phoenix—dying, rotting away, turning to ash, and then being born again. You need to experience a form of death, to shed away the old self. Only then can you be reborn into something higher. You need to suffer pain and despair. That is the only way to be liberated from your previous state. It’s one of those special character arcs that resonated with me strongly. It does kind of kill me to see a work of fiction incorporate genuine spiritual concepts, then get butchered. Because you don’t get that message from mainstream entertainment very often.

Zuko: “I used to think this scar marked me - the mark of the banished prince, cursed to chase the Avatar forever. But lately, I’ve realized I’m free to determine my own destiny, even if I’ll never be free of my mark.”

The only other one I personally recall that had a similar realistic spiritual aspect was Prince Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender. He is another character that I connected with a lot. Another Fire-type character associated with the sun, strangely enough. Zuko’s arc reminded me of Axel’s, actually. As you wander through the valley of the shadow of death, you are purified. You shed the snakeskin of the ego, and are capable of transforming into your highest self. You become capable of unconditional love. He had his own awakening experience during a dream. The way he loved his sister Azula also reminded me of how Axel loved Saïx. He reminds me of Isa, too. Both have iconic scars that symbolize their trauma.

The deeper you go, the more you realize how interconnected all these metaphysical concepts are, too. Eastern/Western. Alchemy, Shamanism, Kundalini Yoga, Kabbalah, Jungian Psychology. Doesn’t matter. It’s all the same thing when you get right down to it. Raising your state of consciousness, and seeing the illusion of the world for what it is. This realization allows you to become a new being. 

The two snakes/dragons represent Masculine and Feminine. Yin and Yang. Shiva and Shakti. Sol and Luna. The energy rising up the two pathways and opening the chakras, is referred to as sacred fire. When these two energies unite, one becomes enlightened, and transcends desire, duality, karma, space and time, etc. One’s true nature is realized, which is infinite. You have the compassion and love of the Feminine, and can combine it with the strength and intelligence of the Masculine.

And Axel’s character arc is essentially the same. They are both alike in so many ways. His Ultimate Gear is called “Double Edge”. His Champion gear is called “Rapid Spinner”, referring to the chakras, which are said to be like whirlpools of energy in the body. Chakra means “wheel” in Sanskrit. And these weapons are shaped like mandalas of the Third Eye and Crown chakras. Mandalas are geometric figures representing unity and harmony. 

It’s also known as sacred geometry. It’s a symbol in a dream, representing the dreamer’s search for completeness and self-unity. Carl Jung used them a lot in his practice. He said they symbolize the wholeness of the self. These specific mandalas are used in Reiki for healing. And this is exactly why we’re never going to find out how Saïx got his scar. It’s fundamentally tied into these spiritual concepts.

Xigbar: “Xion’s disappearance is fascinating. It seems Saïx doesn’t truly “see” her.”

Origin: The Sanskrit name for the 3rd Eye Chakra is called the Ajna (command, or in control). The color of Ajna is indigo or midnight blue, associated with depth of awareness.

Xemnas: “As your flesh bears the sigil, so your name shall be known as that…of a recusant.”

Location – Brow: Located in the center of the forehead between and above the eyes, this Chakra governs psychic abilities and spiritual discernment. Bodily, it governs the pineal and pituitary glands.

Saïx: “Settle down. Xion’s failings won’t affect your standing with us. You’ve nothing to worry about.”

Roxas: “Won’t affect my– What is WRONG with you? Look, I’ll do my mission–later.”

Level of Consciousness – 6th: Ajna Chakra is the command center, or the seat of wisdom where the consciousness evolves to understanding and acting on what we experience from a much deeper place of wisdom and insight. When Kundalini Shakti (spiritual energy) is awakened in this Chakra, it opens the 3rd eye, the inner eye of intuition and inner guidance. An under-active Ajna Chakra may show up in a lack of spiritual depth and understanding.

Saïx: Do you know what happens to those who lose their true purpose? Inevitably, they destroy themselves.

Soul Journey Stage – Breaking-Open: You have an urge to connect with your inner wisdom, to live your life in alignment with your inner guidance.

Xemnas: “Our experiments creating Heartless were attempts to control the mind, and convince it to renounce its sense of self.”

Element – Mind: In yogic tradition, it is believed that the mind is made up of the same 5 elements that the universe is made up of (earth, water, fire, air and ether). Ajna Chakra transcends the individual elements and opens the door to universal intelligence.

Saïx: “Nonsense. I see no problem whatsoever.”

Xigbar: “Ha ha! Well no, apparently you don’t!”

Saïx: “Something you find amusing?”

Xigbar: “If people see with their hearts, Saïx, then you’re even blinder than the rest of us.”

Quality – Intuition: The 3rd eye vision is the inner vision of intuition, insight and wisdom.

Saïx: “Pitiful Heartless, mindlessly collecting hearts. The rage of the Keyblade releases those hearts. They gather in darkness, masterless and free… until they weave together to make Kingdom Hearts. And when that time comes, we can truly, finally exist.”

Origin: The Sanskrit name for the Crown Chakra is the Sahasrara, meaning the lotus of a thousand petals. Violet is the highest color in the light spectrum, and represents wisdom, awareness, and spiritual energy. White is also associated with the Crown Chakra. If your Chakra is underactive, you may lack interest in your spiritual self, you may not be open to intangible spiritual experiences.

Xemnas: “My friends! Remember why we have organized–all the things we hope to achieve. The strength of the human heart is vast. Soon, though…we will have gained power over it! Never again will it…have power over us.”

Level of Consciousness – 7th: This is the last milestone of the evolution of human consciousness, the door to Pure Consciousness. When Kundalini Shakti (spiritual energy) is awakened in this Chakra, the illusion of the individual self is dissolved. Self-realization sets in.

Xion: “I love Roxas and Axel. I’m sure Saïx would scoff at that. Call it a trick of my artificial memories. But the time I spent on that clock tower was real.”

Soul Journey Stage: You have an awareness of your own consciousness, a knowledge that the planet is connected by love, your philosophies are simple and straightforward.

Xemnas: “But then, through Roxas, Sora himself began to shape “it” into “her,” giving Xion a sense of identity. I was ready to scrap the whole project…”

Element – Energy: represents the cosmic energy that is awareness and pure consciousness.

Saïx: “Nngh… How much longer…Kingdom…Hearts… Will your strength never be mine?”

Quality – Bliss: When the Crown Chakra is open, we experience the eternal bliss, the peace that “passeth all understanding.”

Saïx: “Well, that didn’t take long. Did it break again?”

Roxas: “She’s not an ‘it’!”

Axel: “Keep your mouth shut.”

Sense – Empathy: This is because of the deep connection that we experience when the Crown Chakra energy is active.

Axel’s purple mandala-shaped weapons are the Emperor and Empress arcana of Luxord’s Tarot deck. The Red King and White Queen. Sol and Luna. Ultimate and Champion Gear. Saïx’s two weapons in these categories are the pink ones, lol. The ones shaped like Venus, the goddess of love, and Vesta, the goddess of sacred sexuality who’s known as the Keeper of the Sacred Flame.

And in Luxord’s deck, you also have the Sun and Moon arcana. For the Moon arcana, Axel’s weapon is called “Dive Bomb” and shaped like more sacred geometry, and Saïx’s weapon is called “Luminary”, shaped like energy healing.

The Sun arcana is the red “Omega Trinity”, shaped like the Ouroboros, another symbol of Rubedo and the union of Sol and Luna. It’s also a symbol of infinity, beyond the limits of time and space. And Saïx’s is called “Light Year”. Isa is light years away, but the red light can reach him and heal him. Their characters were all about healing each other. It’s why it’s so heartbreaking for me to see how Lea and Isa’s story was treated. You just don’t see many stories like theirs. It’s so positive and uplifting. 

The writers have all of these sophisticated concepts in mind, and their artistic integrity gets trampled all over. KH is a lot like ATLA. They are both marketed as child-friendly, but you can tell that the writers for both series are extremely intelligent and well-educated. Though even ATLA got compromised artistically to make the live action movies…
