Features for recognizing the bridled dolphins, pt. 4: "typical" spinner dolphins

Apart from the Eastern Tropical Pacific, spinner dolphins throughout the rest of their pantropical range appear as more conventional bridled dolphins.

Useful features of pattern for ID:

"Three-tiered" coloration: a dark dorsal cape, mid-tone on the sides, and pale underside. This style of coloration is pretty typical for delphinids, but spinner dolphins are probably the most clear-cut example of it, giving them something of a "layer cake" appearance.

The dorsal cape may arch from behind the eye to dip down again below the dorsal fin, as in these individuals, or it may be fairly level.

The pale grey, white, or pinkish ventral coloration is usually crisply-demarcated from the medium-grey thoracic coloration, and often extends up above the dark pectoral flippers.

The thin lipline and beak tip are very dark.

There is usually not a prominent facial mask, but the thin lines of the bridle, running from the eye to the base of the rostrum and from the eye of the base of the flipper, are typically crisp.

Useful features of body shape for ID:

The rostrum is extremely long and thin. Apart from some forms (or species...) of common dolphin Delphinus delphis, spinners have the most elongate rostra of all delphinids, and the most teeth of any mammal.

Dorsal fin is erect and essentially triangular; unlike most dolphins it is only faintly falcate, if at all, and approaching their Eastern Tropical Pacific relatives may sometimes have a gentle forward cant. The dorsal fin is proportionally larger than in the ETP spinners, though.

These are overall fairly small, slightly-built, compact dolphins.

Shigaraki: 1/10. Bro CANNOT handle spice. You really think gamer boy who survives off of chickie nuggies and the occasional appy juice can handle spice?? You give him anything above "medium" heat level and he's done. He's cooked. He's begging his mom (Kurogiri) for help with a raspy, panicked voice

Kurogiri: 6.5/10. He doesn't really eat, like at all. But if he could, he'd be able to take a normal amount I think

Toga: 8/10. She has a weirdly high spice tolerance that no one can seem to explain. She doesn't brag about it cuz she doesn't even realize that most people have a much lower tolerance for it. She's always surprised when Shigaraki throws up from eating Indian take-out because it doesn't burn her at all

Twice: Either 2/10 or 7/10 and nothing in between. For him, eating spicy food is like a roller coaster ride. One second he'll be perfectly fine, then the very next he's screaming, then back to normal, then screaming, and so on and so forth

Dabi: 7/10. He was born with a very low tolerance, but had vowed to build that up by training his mouth to take it. He knows that his body can't handle hot temps, so if he can train his mouth to handle the hotness of spicy food, he absolutely will. He's gotta flex on Shigaraki as much as he can

Mr. Compress: 5/10. He got average. He doesn't seem like the kinda guy to really like spicy food. Tho his dark, wavy, almost curly hair suggests that he could have some Latino in him, he just doesn't really care for spicy food, so he hasn't built up his tolerance at all

Magne: 11/10. Her spice tolerance is INSANELY high for no reason. She can handle just about everything you could give her. You throw her on Hot Ones and she'll come out stealing the bottle of "Da bomb" for everyday use

Spinner: 4/10. He's the kind of person to fake not being affected by spice when there's people around. He'll try to keep a straight face, even when his eyes are watering so much he can't see and his nose is running faster than he thought possible. It's obvious to EVERYONE that he's in pain, but if Shigaraki's in the room, he mustn't show that (not necessarily Spinneraki, but it can absolutely be)

Nothing too serious or traumatic really. I grew up idolizing my dad (and All Might of course) wanting to be a hero. I was really shy and timid through elementary and junior high, so even though I was strong, I didn't want to draw attention to myself, therefore, not getting any recommendations. I started to let go of those limiting beliefs and allowed myself to use my power as I should, and I passed the entrance exam in 5th place.

Fish of the Day

Today's fish of the day is the blacktip shark! Requested by @isrusin

The blacktip shark, scientific name Carcharhinus limbatus, is a common coastal shark. Coming from the Carcharhinidae family, this makes these sharks "requiem sharks"  relating them to many other sharks in a similar area. Found worldwide in the tropic and subtropic, this shark has multiple populations spread across the pacific and atlantic coasts, the mediterranean sea, Canary islands, Galapagos islands, and Indian ocean. This shark is in water less than 30 meters of depth (about 100 feet of depth) along the continental shelf, they prefer to live along areas with murky waters, island lagoons, coral reef drop offs, and murky bays. They will also tolerate low salinities, being found on occasion within estuaries and swamps. This species is known to migrate seasonally moving north in the summers, and south in the winters to be in their prefered temperatures.

Similar to many others within the Carcharhinidae family visually, the black tip shark can be identified by the black tips along the pectoral, pelvic, doral, and caudal fins. One of the behaviours that gets these sharks mixed up with their relatives is spinning. Like the spinner shark, the blacktip shark is known to complete a corkscrew motion, launching itself out of the water as fast as 21ft/second. THe shark, once above water, will then rotate along the axis 3-4 times before landing. It is thought that this behavior is used to dislodge sharksuckers. Another behavior of blacktip sharks, is an agnostic display, which is a response to when threatened or challenged. The blacktip responds by swimming toward its competitor, rolling side to side and making sideways biting motions.

Similar to other requiem sharks, the blacktip shark can get as large as 9.2 feet maximum, but are usually only around 5 feet in length. The diet of the shark is made primarily of fish, and they will eat any fish they can catch within their range. IN addition to the fish, they will also eat other sharks, crustaceans, and cephalopods. Hunting occurs at the busiest times underwater, dusk and dawn, and although they do not always do this, blacktips will form feeding frenzies when large amounts of food are available.  On the other side of the coin, the blacktip shark has no known predators as adults, but they do have several small crustacean parasites, which infest the gills.

The life of the blacktip sharks begins in swamps. The blacktip shark is known for having one ovary and two uteri, only one of which is used at a time, and sharks will get pregnant every other year after reaching sexual maturity. During the early summer or late spring blacktip sharks breed, and a total of 4-7 pups will then gestate for about a year, before being born in shallow coastal swamps, only 22-24 inches in length. These swamps are referred to as nurseries, and this is where the juveniles will spend the first months of their life, until early winter when they will migrate south.When older, these sharks will return to these same nurseries to have their children.  Sexual maturation is then reached in these sharks at 4-5 years in male sharks and 7-8 years in female sharks with a total lifespan of 12 years on average, with the longest surviving blacktip living to 15 years.

I enjoyed seeing a demonstration of treadle spinning and drop spindle spinning by interpreter Janet Rice at the Neill-cochran House Museum in Austin, TX. She sewed her own bustle dress as well!!

Spinning is some I would enjoy learning (although I think not while I'm working more than full time)...and because of time, it's also something that I'm glad I don't have to do. This privilege is different from thousands of years of human history, when most women spent a whole lot of their time doing this.

"Consider jeans....Weaving the denim in a single pair requires more than six miles...of coarse yarn. Working eight hours a day, a spinner using a traditional Indian charkha would take about twelve and a half days to produce that thread - not including the time to clean and comb the fibers for spinning. If all that cotton had to be spun by hand, even at poverty wages, jeans would be luxuries.

This example actually underplays just how much work spinning once required. For starters, jeans don't demand all that much yarn...."

Brief Personality: Rabia is adventurous and a serious adrenaline junkie, but she has a real heart of gold. She has the naïve belief that most people are really good deep down, and the world usually cowtows to that as the alternative would be stepping to Firebird- who is usually standing very close to Rabia. Between the Punk subcutlure and Firebird, Rabia quickly learned that Cops aren’t people and that self expression and fullfillment are things to strive for, as long as you can support yourself in the pursuit of them. She also fell HARD for Firebird who was pretty oblivious for a while. The three girls became incredibly close. Rabia pretended not to panic every time Firebird vanished for days at a time, and also made a decision to believe anything her crush said, despite being fully aware that Firebird is a compulsive liar and will make up an infinite amount of stories to answer the same question if asked it more than once. Fox started up her Babysitting gig, and Rabia convinced Firebird to help out with it. “HQ”, The old hotel they eventually remodeled to be the most epic youth center they could put together, with resources for anyone who might need them, was originally her idea.  Now they run a successful business and are quietly raising a county’s worth of well educated and extremely liberal kids, to the dismay of a few Karens. Oh and she’s stabbed a few people and set alleys on fire with molotovs. Road Trips are like that for everyone, right?
