The idea that uni protesters are "elitist ivy-league rich kids larping as revolutionaries" on Twitter and Reddit and even here is so fucking funny to me if you actually know anything about the student bodies at these unis. Take it from someone who's going to one of the biggest private unis in the US, 80% of the peers I know are either from the suburbs or an apartment somewhere in America, children of immigrants, or here on a student visa. I've heard about one-percenter students, but I've never met one in person. Like, don't get me wrong, the institution as a whole is still very privileged and white. I've talked with friends and classmates about feeling weird or dissonant being here and coming from such a different background. But in my art program, I see BIPOC, disabled, queer, lower-income students and faculty trying to deconstruct and tear that down and make space every day. So to take a cursory glance at a crowd of student protesters in coalitions that are led by BIPOC & 1st/2nd-gen immigrant students and HQ'd in ethnic housings and student organizations and say, "ah. children of the elite." Get real.

Thinking about spirits of place and spirits of time and how I often get these strong feelings of time in cities or parts of cities that aren't necessarily connected to when they were built. The feeling I get is more akin to hearing the dreams of the city. Stockholm dreams of the 1930s and Gothenburg of the 1980s. The place I live now remembers the 1950s vividly - it's still alive once you leave the medieval heart of the city - but that heart dreams along with all the students that come and go to such a degree that it's hard to hear anything else.

My personal theory about what happened in India is that john was struggling w grief because of the 10th anniversary of Julia's death and that paul leaving early with jane made him kind of spiral thinking that paul didn't care about him and that it felt like a betrayal because of the way they'd bonded over the loss of their mothers in the past

hmm that's fair! I know it was also the sixth month anniversary of brian's death during that time as well.

I think In General john was just going through a bad time in india. like he was one of the heavier drug users of the 3 of them and they all stopped in india. he had to be having A Bad Time in general. and then lots of self-reflection on his life and relationships and everything else, given how much he was meditating.

to Me I don't even know if it really had to do with paul as an individual at all. paul was always supposed to go back early, they'd been reporting on that since before they left. although in the insomnia filled Mental State john was in, I wouldn't be too surprised if he forgot that and got bitchy about it lmao. given how many times he would freak out over shit that was just Not what he thought it was bc he forgot something (see: the northern songs shares), although that was typically After his heroin use started.

but! that definitely could be part of it, like one of the things that annoyed/hurt him when he thought about it while staying up for days and writing and meditating. I think he was probably ruminating a Lot on everything fucked up in his life and his and paul's relationship would be one, both from an internalized homophobia pov but also from just the pov that their relationship was starting to show cracks.

I really do think what happened in india was just a bunch of people getting sober for the first time in years- and one of those people had an untreated personality disorder he'd been self-medicating who now had to face That wall.

interesting to say the least that india was when he started obsessively writing telegrams back & forth with yoko & no longer viewed her as something to be laughed at. I think it was him falling into fp territory w her as paul had fallen off that golden pedestal in his mind for Whatever reason (my personal theory is the engagement to jane & general Cunty Controllingness after brian died as well as a lack of acknowledgement about how john was feeling in the wake of brian's death). he wasn't self-medicating with drugs or paul for those few months & I think he very quickly replaced them with yoko & then heroin later.

a really interesting adaptation for pavitr would be bhim (ben) and karna (kaine)

the inspiration for this comes from the Mahabharatha.

Simplifying the Mahabharatha: There are five brothers called the Pandavas (one of whom is named Bhim), who are heirs to the throne. However, their 100 cousins (Kauravas) also have a claim to the throne. They go through a great deal of hardships, after which the Pandavas win.

The leader of the Kauravas, Duryodhan, befriends someone not of noble blood, Karna, and elevates him to kingly status.

Karna is actually the first son of the Pandavas' mother; however, she abandoned him after his birth, as she was an unwed woman scared of being ostracized. Karna refused to forgive her, but promised he wouldn't hurt her four of her sons, except for one (Arjun).

The Pandavas only found out the truth after Karna's death.

so. could you imagine the narrative potential if we had Bhim and Karna? Brothers who feuded, and hell--didn't know they were brothers. (Pavitr works into this story somehow I swear--)
