when the homes in the depopulated palestinian village of lifta were originally built is impossible to tell and most likely varies from house to house. the area's been known since ancient times, including having been written about in the hebrew bible. it's retained multiple different names throughout history - lifta by romans, nephto by byzantines, clepsta by crusaders, then lifta again by arabs. in more recent times, the area saw battle in the early 19th century, when it saw a peasant's revolt against egyptian conscription and taxation policies. (egyptian-ottoman ruler muhammad ali had attempted to become independent from the ottoman empire, and sought to use the area of "greater syria" which palestine was apart of as a buffer state.)
the village was predominantly muslim with a mosque, a maqām for local sage shaykh badr, a few shops, a social club, two coffee houses, and an elementary school which opened in 1945. its economy was based in farming - being a village of jerusalem, farmers would sell their produce in the city's markets. an olive press which remains in the village gives evidence to one of the most important crops its residents farmed. the historically wealthy village was known for its intricate embroidery and sewing, particularly of thob ghabani bridal dresses, which attracted buyers from across the levant.
lifta also represents one of the few palestinian villages in which the structures weren't totally or mostly decimated during the 1948 nakba. 60 of the 450 original houses remain intact. from zochrot's entry on lifta:
israel's absentee property law of 1950 permits the state to expropriate land and assets left behind, and denies palestinians the right to return to old homes or to reclaim their property. it's estimated that there's around 400,000 descendants of the village's original refugee population dispersed in east jerusalem, the west bank, jordan, and the palestinian diaspora.
like many depopulated palestinian houses, some of those in lifta were initially used to settle predominantly mizrahi immigrants and refugees, in this case 300 jewish families from yemen and kurdistan. the houses weren't registered in their names, and the area generally saw poor infrastructure and no resources including water and electricity provided by the government. most left in the early 1970s as a part of a compensation program to move out people who'd been settled in depopulated palestinian houses - if they didn't, they were referred to as "squatters" and evicted. (holes were even drilled in the roofs of evacuated buildings to make them less habitable). the 13 families which remain there today only managed to do so because they lived close to the edge of the village.
in 1987, the israeli nature reserves authority planned to restore the "long-abandoned village" and turn it into a natural history center which would "stress the jewish roots of the site", but nothing came of it. several more government proposals on what to do with the land had been brought up since then. this culminated in in 2021 when the israel land administration announced without informing the jerusalem municipal authorities that it issued a tender for the construction of a luxury neighborhood on the village's ruins, consisting of 259 villas, a hotel, and a mall. since 2023, they've agreed to shelve and "rethink" these plans after widespread objection.
the reasons for the objections varied significantly between the opposing israeli politicians - who see the village as an exemplar of cultural heritage and "frozen in time" model of palestinian villages before 1948 - and palestinians - who largely see the village as a witness of the nakba and a symbol of hope for their return. lifta is currently listed by unesco as a potential world heritage site, a designation netanyahu has threatened to remove several times.
many palestinians who are descendent from its former residents still live nearby. like with many other depopulated palestinian villages, they've never ceased to visit, organize tours of the village, and advocate for its preservation.

Scientific publisher Sage Journals has retracted three papers on abortion—including a controversial 2021 study on mifepristone, the medication at the center of a US legal battle.
The 2021 study found that mifepristone, one of two pills used in a medication abortion, significantly increased the risk of women going to the emergency room following an abortion. The study, along with another retracted paper from 2022, was cited by US District Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk in the April 2023 ruling that invalidated the Food and Drug Administration’s approval of the drug.
Mifepristone was approved in 2000 by the Food and Drug Administration, the federal agency that evaluates the safety and efficacy of drugs, and has been used by at least 5.9 million women in the US since then. The drug blocks a hormone called progesterone that’s needed for a pregnancy to continue. It’s used alongside another pill, misoprostol, to induce an abortion within 10 weeks of pregnancy.
The three retracted studies were published in the journal Health Services Research and Managerial Epidemiology in 2019, 2021, and 2022. In July 2023, Sage issued an “expression of concern” about the 2021 paper, saying it was launching an investigation into the article.
According to Sage, a reader contacted the journal with concerns about misleading presentations of data in the 2021 article on mifepristone. The person also questioned whether the authors’ affiliations with pro-life advocacy organizations, including the Charlotte Lozier Institute, present conflicts of interest that the authors should have disclosed in the article.
In a retraction notice published on February 5, Sage said an independent reviewer with expertise in statistical analyses evaluated the concerns and concluded that the article's presentation of the data in certain figures leads to an inaccurate conclusion. The reviewer also found that “the composition of the cohort studied has problems that could affect the article's conclusions,” according to Sage.
As part of the publisher’s investigation, Sage said, two subject matter experts conducted an independent post-publication peer review of the three articles and found that they “demonstrate a lack of scientific rigor.” In the 2021 and 2022 articles, the reviewers found problems with the study design and methodology, errors in the authors’ analysis of the data, and misleading presentations of the data. In the 2019 article, the experts identified unsupported assumptions and misleading presentations of the findings.
“The retractions are not scientifically warranted as is easily demonstrable to any trained, objective scientist,” James Studnicki, the lead author on all three studies, told WIRED via email.
Studnicki, the vice president and director of data analytics of the Charlotte Lozier Institute, shared with WIRED a copy of a point-by-point rebuttal he and his coauthors submitted to Sage in response to the retractions.
In the 2021 study on mifepristone, Studnicki and his coauthors used data from Medicaid claims of 423,000 medication and procedural abortions between 1999 and 2015. Of those, over a quarter visited a hospital emergency room within 30 days of the abortion. During the study period, they found that emergency room visits associated with medication abortion rose much faster when compared to rates following a surgical abortion.
In his ruling last year, Kacsmaryk wrote that anti-abortion doctors and medical groups had legal standing to sue over mifepristone’s approval because “they allege adverse events from chemical abortion drugs can overwhelm the medical system and place ‘enormous pressure and stress’ on doctors during emergencies and complications.”
Ushma Upadhyay, a public health social scientist at UC San Francisco who studies medication abortion, says she has had concerns about the 2021 study since it was first published. “In my mind, the largest problem with the paper is that it conflates emergency department visits with serious adverse events,” she says. A serious adverse event related to medication abortion includes requiring a blood transfusion, needing a major surgery, or being admitted to the hospital—none of which the study looked at.
In their response to Sage Journals, the paper’s authors argue that emergency room visits are a “broad proxy indicator” for abortion-related complications. But Upadhyay says it’s to be expected that some people visit the ER after getting a medication abortion, since the pill regimen causes bleeding. Especially since patients often take the medication at home and may not live near an abortion provider, they may go to the ER if they have questions about side effects or to confirm that the abortion was successful, she says.
Decades of research has shown that mifepristone is safe and has a low rate of serious complications. The FDA has recorded 32 deaths following its use but cautions that these events “cannot with certainty be causally attributed to mifepristone” because not enough information is known about the patients’ health and care they received.
The 2022 study, which was based on the same dataset as the 2021 paper, found that patients who have medication abortions and subsequently visit the emergency room are frequently misclassified as miscarriage patients, which conceals abortions. The study was also cited in Kacsmaryk’s ruling last year.
The 2019 paper looked at abortion providers and their hospital admitting privileges—meaning formal agreements between providers and hospitals that allow them to directly admit patients to the hospital. It found that half of abortion providers in Florida lacked such privileges, which the authors argued raises safety concerns about their medical qualifications. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has said that admitting privileges are not tied to patient care or a clinician’s competence.
After Kacsmaryk’s attempt to reverse mifepristone’s approval in April last year, the US Supreme Court granted a stay to keep the drug available. The high court is expected to hear the case next month. Until then, the drug's future remains uncertain.

Note: the pre-print version has some minor differences. I haven't been able to get hold of the full published version.
If you feel like you just haven't seen enough stupid buzzwords crammed together into the most vacuous ramble you've ever encountered, "No More Building Resiliency" is the paper for you.
APA’s refusal to acknowledge white supremacy in current events is a display of white supremacy that advances its centuries-long arc of white supremacy. Positioning itself as the powerful savior, the magnanimous arbiter of scientific healing, while deleting its white supremacist origin story is yet another manifestation of its whiteness. APA’s statements provide a window into the profession’s history of racism and white supremacy, while capturing its active efforts to refuse and deny it. This paper challenges this refusal, redirecting collective attention back to the past to delineate the patterns shaping our unfolding present. Organized psychology is the foundation for implementing antiracist psychological practices. However, these practices—whether they are APA statements, clinical tools, or research protocols—cannot be reimagined as antiracist until the whiteness overpowering them is revealed. This process requires interrogating contemporary practices and situating them in the histories and systems of oppression that gave rise to them.
“No More Building Resiliency” takes aim at celebrated psychological frameworks that uphold whiteness, thereby bending the moral arc of the universe towards injustice. Encouraging resilience among the nonwhite, marginalized people assaulted by whiteness and its intersecting systems of oppression, rather than condemning the sources causing harm, is an injustice. American psychology’s narrow view and orientation to individual-level change, which renders itself ineffective at best (e.g., Price et al., 2021), is harmful in more subtle ways (Chen et al., 2021; Fadus et al., 2019). Pathologizing minoritized children for attachment deficiencies theorized by white psychologists while sidestepping the violent family separation forced by the legacies of slavery and colonization is another (Causadias et al., 2021; Coard, 2021). Detouring away from oppressive legacies is the first, most important step in an antiracist journey. However, this sharp turn cannot transpire until American psychology’s sordid history is exposed and its contemporary threads are unraveled (Legha et al. 2022). This antiracist approach to psychological practice, therefore, offers seven historical themes illuminating the whiteness engulfing commonplace psychological practices. This historically oriented approach rejects seeking reductive answers through natural processes born from colonial social order (APA Div 45 Warrior’s Path Presidential Task Force [Warrior’s Path], 2020). There are no boxes to check or competencies to master, as is often the norm for psychological practice. Anchored by CRT, abolition, and decolonization, it, instead, inspires asking better questions that lack immediate answers. Each historical theme, therefore, begins with a question prompt to implicate clinicians in remaking psychology’s white supremacist history into an antiracist future. This prompt also positions the millions of clients receiving psychological services each year to hold their providers accountable by interrogating their clinicians’ practices. Everyone owns the past, present, and future of American psychology. By transparently exposing the past and present manifestations of oppression, this antiracist future becomes closer to being within reach.
There's literally no statistics, no evidence, no data, nothing to actually support the insane ramble of this paper. It's an unhinged mess working overtime to try to connect a dozen different events from the distant past and more recent events together into a single unified conspiracy, with the American Psychological Association at the center of it, based on literally nothing.
White saviorism is the white supremacist assault, thinly veiled by the language of “strengths-based,” “trauma-informed,” and playful acronyms suggesting “we got you.” Saving people from harm rather than eradicating the harm is the strategy to cover up and sustain the harm.
This complete disregard for evidence is thoroughly unsurprising when you encounter passages like the following:
Thus, objectivity, much like race, reveals itself to be a socially constructed weapon leveraged by (white) people in power to advance their (racist) contentions by claiming they are numerical and, therefore, indisputable.
and
The lesson is clear: measurement does not imply truth. “[N]umbers are interpretive, [embodying] theoretical assumptions about what should be counted, how one should understand material reality, and how quantification contributes to systematic knowledge about the world” (Poovey, 1998, p. 12). Data–a manifestation of power, not a construct free of it–demands interrogating what is being measured and what for, who is doing the measuring and to whom are they doing it, and what (personal) agenda they are advancing and what truths they are trying to obscure.
The tweet wasn't kidding when they described it as "Qanon-grade." It's paranoid, presuppositional and basis much of its claims on things that haven't been said or done.
But this is now published, and people can, and have, cited it. So now this deranged screed is "knowledge."
Locating health and pathology within individual psyches and bodies represents an active and deliberate erasure of oppressive histories and racist structures.
So, treating psychology as psychology is wrong, because it doesn't do anything to completely unmake and remake society.
American psychology needs a complete redo.
They call instead to reject everything we know about human psychology and advocate instead for a "historically oriented approach" (i.e. blame everything about today on people who are long dead, and events that nobody alive experienced) in which...
There are no boxes to check or competencies to master, as is often the norm for psychological practice.
That is, put activists in charge, rather than qualified, competent therapists.
The crux of the paper is really embodied in the title. Don't teach black people to be resilient, don't encourage them to build an internal locus of control, that they are largely in control of their own lives. Because when you want to disparage and impugn anything that works against you and your politics, just concoct some mental gymnastics to associate it with "white supremacy" and then say "George Floyd," "whiteness" and "slavery" a lot.
Resiliency, another rigged discourse, suggests that minoritized people have–or should have–a unique ability to live with and thrive in the face of oppression as a sign of wellbeing, rather than a violence they have no choice but to suffer (Wingo et al., 2010). It harkens back to theories of “racial resistance” contending Black bodies, including children’s, were stronger in order to justify their enslavement.
This is eerily similar to Xianity, as exemplified by this quote from a devout Xian pastor.
"Satan doesn’t whisper, 'Believe in me.' He whispers, 'Believe in yourself.'" -- Matt Smethurst
Predators benefit by encouraging people to be vulnerable and fragile, and denigrating anything that would get in the way of them leveraging that helplessness for their own purposes.
This paper wants black people to feel helpless and victimized, because happy people who feel in control of their lives are far less likely to engage in the uprising and revolution the scholars activists are looking to instigate. Marx came to the same conclusion, by the way.

BURBANK, CALIFORNIA -- In a serious surprising turn of the events, the original cartoon web series 'High Guardian Spice' on Crunchyroll is facing an uncertain future as discussions surrounding a potential Season 2 have given way to disappointment and controversy.
High Guardian Spice was produced by Crunchyroll Originals in late-October 2021, and was created by a Cuba-American show creator named Mr. Raye Rodriguez, was initially met with a significant amount of excitement upon the announcement.
With its focus on diverse characters and a story centered around 4 young women named Rosemary, Sage, Parsley and Thyme, whose attending a magical school at the High Guardian Academy (HGA), the series aimed to break new grounds in the world of cartoons, since there is no further evidence or independently claimed for the anime genre. However, as Season 1 concluded, it became evident that the show had garnered mixed to severely negative reviews.
(STOCK PHOTO COURTESY: Google Images)
Criticism and negativity surrounding the show intensified, leading to a series of harsh reactions from some viewers, largely citing issues related to the animation quality and storytelling. Online discussions quickly shifted towards accusations of political hate speech and critiques of the series as a "trojan horse" for LGBTQ+ representation. These criticisms led to extreme divisions within the anime community.
(SCREENGRAB COURTESY: Raye Rodriguez via The X Network, per the relay thread with Nitter Instances)
The situation escalated further as High Guardian Spice, faced backlash from some quarters of the anime and cartoon communities. This led to concerns about its future and the potential for a 2nd Season. A vocal group of fans expressed discomfort with the series, feeling it discouraged non-LGBTQ+ viewers for various reasons, including a lot of online allegations of cyber-homophobia.
The actual controversy additionally prolonged to accusations of underbudgeting for both the writers and animation departments, with some claiming that the show's production quality fails to meet the entire project industry standards. The series receiving massive bad interests from a group of people or individual but vocal, with the incorrect marketing for its targeted audience whose labeled it as the "most unfairly maligned anime" on the internet web series as according to The Mary Sue news bureau.
(ART PHOTO COURTESY: Raye Rodriguez via LinkedIn Blog Post / He is now permanently done on Crunchyroll, which potentially moved on to a different streaming animation platform. While Ms. Rosemary grips her sword and tries herself without giving up.)
In light of these saddened developments to Radyo Bandera news team, Crunchyroll remains tight-lipped with regards to the web series' fate of High Guardian Spice. Speculation about a potential 2nd Season met uncertainty, and it is unclear whether it will return, or be permanently cancelled.
As it stands, the divisive nature of 'High Guardian Spice' has also placed its destiny in jeopardy. Whether Crunchyroll picks to address the criticisms, or if the series will make a move to a different animation studio and a different streaming platform, remains to be seen with a good transparency to the public. The controversy surrounding 'High Guardian Spice' poses a question about how far creators and platforms are willing to go in accommodating both their core targeted audience and people with differing viewpoints. Will a potential Season 2 be an opportunity for a redemption, or risk the show's cancellation forever?
(THUMBNAIL PHOTO COURTESY: DaftPina via YT Images)
Case and point by default in the world of cartoons instead of anime, 'High Guardian Spice' stands as an interesting case study with a point-of-view, limiting boundaries of what a web series can be represent, the impact of fan discourse, and the weight of a balanced public opinions. Only time will tell for what the future holds on this ambitious web series of Crunchyroll Originals.
High Guardian Spice is available to stream all the episodes, on demand right now on Crunchyroll.

Week 5 - What does/can digital citizens really do social media? Do they have any responsibilities?
This week’s topic has driven us to focus on the concept of digital citizenship. In basic terms, the concept can be described as the ability to know how to use the skills and knowledge of digital technology effectively so that it could create a positive effect on society, the communication process between individuals, and the creation or consumption of digital content (Office of the eSafety Commissioner, 2023).
In order to accomplish these tasks, people would usually take advantage of hashtags (#). In which, it consists of the "#" sign used with short keywords or phrases. This concept originally appeared on Twitter to make it easier for users to find interesting messages and follow discussions or trends. This sign can be additionally used to draw attention to and stress a certain topic on social media. Furthermore, hashtags are also extremely well implemented by social activism to bring about social change, since they frequently use these social media platforms to share information and raise awareness about issues related to the society (Kim & Lee, 2022). With the number of users we have now, social network activists play an important role in molding public discourse and fighting for a variety of issues such as education, public health, human rights, and equality. Moreover, digital citizenship is also utilized in the political processes such as voting through online polls and surveys, engaging with government authorities via digital platforms, taking part in online policy discussions, or organizing or supporting advocacy efforts for larger social or political concerns. According to Jæger (2021), the digital revolution has had a substantial impact on citizens' political participation. These platforms have opened up political discussion by enabling individuals to participate in conversations, express their ideas, and connect with political players in previously unheard-of ways. Furthermore, they have allowed citizens to create independent groups, raise their concerns, and campaign for their problems in front of larger audiences. This shift has transformed traditional elections into a more collaborative, inclusive paradigm in which ordinary individuals may actively influence political agendas and promote social change.

Article 1:
The (In) flexibility of Racial Discrimination Labor Market Context and the Racial Wage Gap in the United States, 2000- 2021.
Article 2:
Economic Inquiry: Soft Skills, Hard Skills, and the Black/ White Wage Gaps
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ecin.12406
This first article focuses more on the economic conditions and the racial wage discrimination for Black, Hispanic, and Asian workers. This article uses the Current Population Survey (CPS) for statistics and data. The author of this article argues that racial wage discrimination against black workers is more rigid and resistant to changes in economic environments, whereas wage discrimination against Hispanics and Asians is more flexible and responsive to economic conditions.
The second article focuses on the easier/ softer skills as well as the more difficult/ harder skills of jobs and occupations. As well as the impacts that it has on the white and black wages. This study used the research from both and the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY) and CPS. Research shows that the wage gap for black/white workers is smaller for hard-skilled jobs than easy-skilled jobs (Pg. 1033, Paragraph 5). This article also shows how wages are different if an individual decides to be a salesperson or a technician. Where subscripts in this equation is W (white) and B is (black) individuals. This article has 3 main implications, 1 is that policy makers should pay more attention to taste discrimination on the part of customers and co-workers. 2< the focus of government policy should be turned toward these jobs that require softer skills and that such policy should target to eliminate potential disadvantages that Blacks may face in the accumulation of these skills. Lastly, Blacks may get higher return from investigating in cognitive skills than whites.
I feel like both of these articles are the same in a way they both measure the wages between people of color and whites. But they are different because article 1 focuses more on just wage gap between white and black individuals. Whereas #2 expands the wage into Hispanics, Asians, Whites, as well as blacks. Not only that but it also focuses on unemployment percentages.

Week 9: Gaming Communities, Social Gaming and Live Streaming
What is a game? “To play a game is to attempt to achieve a specific state of affairs, using only means permitted by rules, where the rules prohibit use of more efficient in favour of less efficient means, and where the rules are accepted just because they make possible such activity. I also offer the following simpler, and, so to speak, more portable version of the above: playing a game is the voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles.” (Suits 1978, p.41)
Game platforms: -Consoles -Distribution & Consumption - Social/communication - Streaming Gaming, primarily online gaming, has become very popular in recent years due to its ability to create a community. People are able to share their interests in the games with others all over the world just from their own devices and many different platforms. What comes with this is streaming. Many gamers are now streaming on platforms like Twitch and YouTube where they play games and viewers engage with it by commenting and getting entrainment out of watching someone play. According to Twitch statistics, in 2023, there are over 2.4 million average concurrent viewers. Streaming has also become a way people complete games, as they document it live for people to watch. Gaming has become both a sport for many and even a job allowing them to earn money through live streaming.
Some interesting information from the required reading is below.
As of 2018, Melbourne now accounts for over half of the entire Australian videogame development industry (GDAA, 2018) During 2010 opportunities and popularity around sharing videogame works were easier than obtaining employment in the industry. International Game Developers Association was a monthly social meetup that was set up in the early 2010s. It was both a social and networking event. The Arcade was then introduced which provided affordable office space for small game development teams. This again highlights the community gaming forms through events that happen all over the world and here in Melbourne. Considering starting gaming? It's never too late to join the community and share your interests with others. Let's Kick Racism Out of Football
An organizational profile of Kick It Out
Kick It Out Logo (2022). Retrieved here.
Kick It Out was founded in 1993 by a group of football organizations and individuals who were concerned about the increase in racism and discrimination in football. The group was initially known as "Let's Kick Racism Out of Football". The organization aims to make football a sport where everyone can feel safe and included, regardless of their race, gender, sexuality, religion, or disability.
The organization is based out of London, United Kingdom. It has no branches, but it works in partnership with various football clubs, leagues, and organizations across the UK.
The governance structure of Kick It Out is led by a board of trustees who are responsible for overseeing the organization's work and ensuring that it is meeting its objectives. The current Chair of the organization is Sanjay Bhandari, who was appointed in 2020, and the Chief Executive Officer is Tony Burnett.
Kick It Out has established a range of standards for clubs, players, and fans, and provides education and training programs to promote understanding and awareness of discrimination issues. The organization also participates in many conversations on social media and news platforms in relation to incidents of discrimination in football.
One such event was the racist abuse aimed at England players during a Euro 2020 qualifier match against Bulgaria in 2019. Kick It Out urged the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to evict Bulgaria from the tournament, but Bulgaria ultimately got away with playing their next match without fans.
Another significant event that impacted Kick It Out was the murder of George Floyd in the United States in 2020. The organization were one of the first parties to suggest that football players take a knee before matches to call for action and change in society.
In 2021, Kick It Out formed a three-year partnership with Sky Sports in January 2021 to help tackle racism and promote diversity and inclusion in football by way of educational initiatives and annual reports on issues such as diversity and discrimination. As Sky is Europe’s biggest broadcaster of sports, the partnership is very favourable for Kick It Out.
However, some criticisms have also been aimed at Kick It Out, particularly in relation to its funding. For example, in an article by The Guardian, former England footballer and Kick It Out ambassador, Leroy Rosenior, expressed concerns that the organization's reliance on funding from the football industry could compromise its independence and effectiveness. But seeing as the aforementioned partnership with Sky transcends the football industry itself, Kick It Out may very well have shushed those critics for now.
A study published in 2021 also broached Kick It Out’s effectiveness – or lack thereof. A survey conducted in connection with the study found that while fans recognize the importance of raising awareness of racial discrimination, almost three-quarters of White fans had not engaged with any Kick It Out initiatives. This goes to show that Kick It Out does not necessarily deliver what it promises – at least not to the desired extent.
Read about Kick It Out’s initiatives on their website.

He would say I was "such an ignorant adolescent" condescendingly, spat down from his throne through a tense mouth. I was though.
How ignorant of me to be but nine, and curious Pardon me, Oh Dearest King Father, for lacking four decades of knowledge while I'd lived barely One. And having questions I couldn't answer...
Until I could.
Searched, observed, watched, heard, Learned: don't be such an Ignorant Adolescent
And now as I grow out of his castle house, he wonders why I am distant. I don't talk to him, I'm not his little girl anymore
Well gee, remind me again; Why I learned to find myself by myself?
