Au where Casimir gets his foot in the door early, and Quiroz joins Renasci as a seventh-year
#in this au Quiroz is the one Celia meets on her train instead of Maddie#because the desert knights meticulously coordinate things that way#having grown up with the Desert Knights Quiroz not only has some serious preconceived notions about Celia#but he also has an intimate and detailed understanding of the Demsne’s goverment Celia’s role in it and the politics surrounding this#and he assumes Celia has thins knowledge as well#if immediately becomes clear that she is both a very nice person and completely clueless and Quiroz becomes friends for realsies#and we bypass a lot of the plots that operate on Celia being in the dark because Quiroz just. tells her things. fills her in.#realizing how much has been kept from her Celia confronts Professor Legaspi and by extension the guild#and because they can’t use the ‘protecting you’ excuse they tell her a lot of stuff that she turns around and shares with Quiroz#Quiroz then turns around and shares it with the Desert Knights so that when Indaba stages a kidnapping attempt at the end of the year#it is very successful and Celia ends up trapped in Huperpetra years early#because she’s early she doesn’t have her block breaking abilities and her escape attempts all fail#Quiroz has a change of heart and tries to help her in one of the attempts but is thwarted and locked in the cell with her#they have a big fight followed by a serious conversation followed by trauma bonding and they come together despite Quiroz’s betrayal#eventually the guild storms the place and the two of them use the distraction to get out#they encounter Celia’s family in the process and she is understandly stricken by this encounter#it holds them up significantly and Casimir finds them there in the dungeon#the guild don’t know where to look and therefore haven’t found them#so it’s just a two person smack down - Casimir vs. an eleven-year old#except no it’s not because Quiroz comes out of nowhere joining the fray#he kills Casimir (mostly by luck but partly because he’s a savage)#amd they all make it out alive (with that one exception lol)#and Celia gets to be happy with minimal stress#celias journey#quiroz bazemore#alternate universes

Determined to use her skills to fight inequality, South African computer scientist Raesetje Sefala set to work to build algorithms flagging poverty hotspots - developing datasets she hopes will help target aid, new housing, or clinics.
From crop analysis to medical diagnostics, artificial intelligence (AI) is already used in essential tasks worldwide, but Sefala and a growing number of fellow African developers are pioneering it to tackle their continent's particular challenges.
Local knowledge is vital for designing AI-driven solutions that work, Sefala said.
"If you don't have people with diverse experiences doing the research, it's easy to interpret the data in ways that will marginalise others," the 26-year old said from her home in Johannesburg.
Africa is the world's youngest and fastest-growing continent, and tech experts say young, home-grown AI developers have a vital role to play in designing applications to address local problems.
"For Africa to get out of poverty, it will take innovation and this can be revolutionary, because it's Africans doing things for Africa on their own," said Cina Lawson, Togo's minister of digital economy and transformation.
"We need to use cutting-edge solutions to our problems, because you don't solve problems in 2022 using methods of 20 years ago," Lawson told the Thomson Reuters Foundation in a video interview from the West African country.
Digital rights groups warn about AI's use in surveillance and the risk of discrimination, but Sefala said it can also be used to "serve the people behind the data points". ...
'Delivering Health'
As COVID-19 spread around the world in early 2020, government officials in Togo realized urgent action was needed to support informal workers who account for about 80% of the country's workforce, Lawson said.
"If you decide that everybody stays home, it means that this particular person isn't going to eat that day, it's as simple as that," she said.
In 10 days, the government built a mobile payment platform - called Novissi - to distribute cash to the vulnerable.
The government paired up with Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA) think tank and the University of California, Berkeley, to build a poverty map of Togo using satellite imagery.
Using algorithms with the support of GiveDirectly, a nonprofit that uses AI to distribute cash transfers, the recipients earning less than $1.25 per day and living in the poorest districts were identified for a direct cash transfer.
"We texted them saying if you need financial help, please register," Lawson said, adding that beneficiaries' consent and data privacy had been prioritized.
The entire program reached 920,000 beneficiaries in need.
"Machine learning has the advantage of reaching so many people in a very short time and delivering help when people need it most," said Caroline Teti, a Kenya-based GiveDirectly director.
'Zero Representation'
Aiming to boost discussion about AI in Africa, computer scientists Benjamin Rosman and Ulrich Paquet co-founded the Deep Learning Indaba - a week-long gathering that started in South Africa - together with other colleagues in 2017.
"You used to get to the top AI conferences and there was zero representation from Africa, both in terms of papers and people, so we're all about finding cost effective ways to build a community," Paquet said in a video call.
In 2019, 27 smaller Indabas - called IndabaX - were rolled out across the continent, with some events hosting as many as 300 participants.
One of these offshoots was IndabaX Uganda, where founder Bruno Ssekiwere said participants shared information on using AI for social issues such as improving agriculture and treating malaria.
Another outcome from the South African Indaba was Masakhane - an organization that uses open-source, machine learning to translate African languages not typically found in online programs such as Google Translate.
On their site, the founders speak about the South African philosophy of "Ubuntu" - a term generally meaning "humanity" - as part of their organization's values.
"This philosophy calls for collaboration and participation and community," reads their site, a philosophy that Ssekiwere, Paquet, and Rosman said has now become the driving value for AI research in Africa.
Inclusion
Now that Sefala has built a dataset of South Africa's suburbs and townships, she plans to collaborate with domain experts and communities to refine it, deepen inequality research and improve the algorithms.
"Making datasets easily available opens the door for new mechanisms and techniques for policy-making around desegregation, housing, and access to economic opportunity," she said.
African AI leaders say building more complete datasets will also help tackle biases baked into algorithms.
"Imagine rolling out Novissi in Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast ... then the algorithm will be trained with understanding poverty in West Africa," Lawson said.
"If there are ever ways to fight bias in tech, it's by increasing diverse datasets ... we need to contribute more," she said.
But contributing more will require increased funding for African projects and wider access to computer science education and technology in general, Sefala said.
Despite such obstacles, Lawson said "technology will be Africa's savior".
"Let's use what is cutting edge and apply it straight away or as a continent we will never get out of poverty," she said. "It's really as simple as that."

do you have any recs for folklore/mythology books to learn from or docs/videos?
I have tonnes!!! I prefer non-fiction books when it comes to mythology, with the exception of American Gods and Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman, and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. This one is more history focused but it blends the mythology and culture of Nigeria/Igbo folklore. I would recommend it to anyone just looking for a really good book to read about culture, history, the perception of masculinity within that culture, and of course, the negative effects of colonisation, and the history of pre-colonisation in Nigeria. It's one of my favourite history books by a really amazing author and poet! Def recommend.
I tried to focus on mythology that is not as widely popularised as others since they are often harder to find. But here are some of the ones that I enjoyed! Most of them were available at my public library as well so if you can't find them in stores or online, that's always another good place to look for mythology books/refs!
Books:
Myths from Mesopotamia by Stephanie Dalley
Voices from the Other World: Ancient Egyptian Tales by Naguib Mahfouz
Conceptions of God in Ancient Egypt: The One and the Many by Erik Hornung
Indaba, my Children: African Folktales by Vusamazulu Credo Mutwa (this is a massive encyclopedia at 700 pages but sooooo worth it!)
Folktales from India by A.K. Ramanujan
Myth = Mithya: Decoding Hindu Mythology by Devdutt Pattanaik (also: The Goddess in India: The 5 faces of Eternal Feminism, 99 thoughts on Ganesha: stories, symbols and Rituals of India's beloved Elephant Headed Deity, and the Pregnant King are really good)
Myth and Reality: Studies in the Formation of Indian Culture by Damodar Dharmananda Kosambi
The Ramayana & Mahabharata by Chakravarti Rajagopalachari (these are epics but OH GOD they are fantastic!)
Irish Mythology - this is a massive tumblr reference with books and guides on where to find Irish Folklore
I've really been enjoying the Chronical Books series on mythology - if only for the illustrations. My favourite so far is Tales of East Africa by Jamilla Okubo, Tales of India: Folktales from Bengal, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu by Svabhu Kohli and Viplov Singh. I wouldn't really say these are super important for mythology - the stories are very basic (not in a bad way at all, just less in-depth since I believe the books are geared toward a younger audience) but the art alone makes them worth it!
Mythology by Edith Hamilton is usually a good introduction to Greek, Roman, and Norse myths
The Prose Edda: Tales from Norse Mythology by Snorri Sturluson
Videos:
Trese on Netflix - it's about Philippine mythology told in modern times, and just an amazing show on its own!
The Entire Story of Greek Mythology Explained - it's 3.5 hours but WORTH IT!
I don't really watch too many videos on mythology, but I do on history and culture. It's just kinda hard to find mythology/folklore specific videos but since it's often interwoven within the cultures respective history, I watch Smithsonian docs on their history instead.
I really hope this helps!!!

2017 VoicePlay fall activities — go, go, go ’til you ho-ho-ho
The last few months of the year are usually a busy time for singers, and this year was no exception for VoicePlay. Once they had wrapped up their summer projects, they rolled right on.
.
And they're off
The boys leaped into autumn by heading north once more for shows in NYC and Reading, PA.
They also threw their hats in the ring for a Hostess snack cake giveaway. (They didn't win, but that's okay. Some of the fans always made sure to keep them well supplied with sugar anyway.)
Tumblr media
.
Back home, it was time to start rehearsing for their third and final year of residency at Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party. They also needed to prep for their upcoming trip to the west coast, and film their next music video. Eli did manage to sneak in a bro brunch with their old friend, Jeremy James, though.
.
A little West Coast swing
For the third weekend in October, the guys embarked on a fast-paced trip to Los Angeles. They crammed a concert and three video shoots into just three days.
They kicked things off with a Saturday night show in Palos Verdes (and teased the locals a bit by calling it by the translated name "Green Sticks").
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
On Sunday, they packed in two music video shoots. They started with one of their two Christmas tunes for the year and new collaborator Shoshana Bean. Then they hopped over to reunite with Kurt Hugo Schneider for a little Broadway music.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Monday was time to get silly and messy with the pocket.watch ladies and some Taylor Swift.
Tumblr media
.
Keep it going
When they flew home, the boys were met by Rachel Potter once again for their second Christmas song of the year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Merry Hallowee-mas
All the preparation the guys had been doing for the upcoming holiday season didn't mean that they would ever neglect spooky season. After a few days of rest, sound guy Paul Kaleka and J.None kicked off the weekend by winning Indaba Music's Spooky Jams contest with a song called "Ghosts and Goblins".
VoicePlay released their video for "What's This?" from The Nightmare Before Christmas on the day before Halloween, and used it as a segue into their new holiday EP, "Warm Up", which they announced at the beginning of November.
The tracks are a combination of revamped tunes from the previous year with J.None's vocals added into the mix, this year's three new offerings, and one more new song that received a video during the following holiday season.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note that J.None is credited as a member of the group, not a featured guest.
.
One more spin
Just over a week after they'd gotten home, the boys headed out of town again for a student workshop and a concert at Western Illinois University.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
Off to the races
One week after that, it was time to kick off their MVMCP schedule in the Magic Kingdom.
Tumblr media
With sixteen shows per week for the rest of the year, it would be reasonable to think that job would be their sole focus. However, persuing a career in the performing arts isn't usually a path for sensible folks. There were still plenty of other engagements to keep them busy. For the second night of the residency, VoicePlay handed the reins to their backup guys and scooted up to Ohio.
.
But wait, there's more
The reason for their visit to Dayton was headlining the Kettering National A Cappella Festival. The trip there didn't go nearly as smoothly as they would've liked.
Tumblr media
Once they actually reached their destination, though, the concert went off without a hitch, and the audience had a grand time.
Tumblr media
.
The next weekend, they took a drive down to Avon Park for a show at South Florida State College. Bacause it was close to home, Kathy and Geoff decided to bring little William along for the first time.
Tumblr media
Uncle Earl always seems to end up holding the babies in group photos. 😁
.
Having the week of Thanksgiving free from their Disney World duties didn't mean that they just kicked back and relaxed. First they hopped on the middle leg of a Disney Magic cruise for a three-day jaunt to The Bahamas and back.
Then on the evening of Thanksgiving itself, they gathered up Erik Winger and scooted down to the southeast coast to perform at the annual tree lighting ceremony for the Boca Raton Resort & Club.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
On another day off from MVMCP in early December, the PattyCake guys teamed up with their friends at Entertainment Central to film a very beachy Christmas romp for their Atlantic City Boys group in Cocoa Beach. The final "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" / "Here Comes Santa Claus" mashup video was originally posted to Michael Evans's channel a week later, then reposted to the group's channel a year and a half after that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
That weekend, Winger joined VoicePlay for a two-show day at Mariner Church in Sping Hill, FL.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
important preparations — ear plugs and power naps
.
When Rockapella came to town on their holiday tour near the end of the month, Layne and Cyndi took little Doris to see some of their pals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
.
J.None spent both the weekend before his birthday and New Year's Eve rocking out at local shows with Paradigm Party Band.
.
That's all, folks
With the year coming to an end, the VoicePlay guys finally took the chance to relax, spend time with loved ones, and prepare for the coming months. But those are tales for another post.

Veronika Richterova
Veronika is an artist who works with recycled plastic bottles . She does so by manipulating the material through methods of cutting , twisting , melting and heating , transforming the plastic .
She creates chandeliers and other pieces, such as the nature inspired garden sculptures which hold a cartoon quality. These pieces look very life like at first glance which appeals to me , I am left questioning if it really is a gang of bats.
She uses PE/PET plastic bottles , in a variety of colours. Pet shrinks when heated , however other types of plastics can be unpredictable , so for many of her sculpture it have been an experiment.
I like how she stuck with the medium of the plastic bottle , as she upcycled in a creative way and there is an endless amount of these , i too would like to work more with plastic . I think the cartoonish characteristics to her piecework well , as it shows that is does not quite fit in with the environment , as plastic is not meant to.
I want to manipulate plastics in a similar way she does, changing the form of the plastic , changes the meaning of it.
