Happy Birthday, Ileana Douglas
The above was taken back in April, and it depicts my joyous opportunity to reunite and catch up with actress/author/presenter Ileana Douglas (Ileana Hesselberg, b. 1961) I knew Ileana shortly after moving to NYC in the late ’80s. We were both members of the Manhattan Punchline Comedy Corps, a sort of comedy bootcamp/internship offered by the hard-working Steve Kaplan’s much-missed Manhattan…

Robert De Niro in Cape Fear (Martin Scorsese, 1991)
Cast: Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Juliette Lewis, Joe Don Baker, Robert Mitchum, Gregory Peck, Martin Balsam, Ileana Douglas, Fred Thompson. Screenplay: Wesley Strick, based on a novel by John D. MacDonald and a screenplay by James R. Webb. Cinematography: Freddie Francis. Production design: Henry Bumstead. Film editing: Thelma Schoonmaker. Music Elmer Bernstein.
Steven Spielberg originally planned to film this remake of J. Lee Thompson's 1962 Cape Fear, but when he decided it wasn't exactly his thing, he traded with Scorsese for the rights to make Schindler's List (1993). (Which in turn makes me wonder what Scorsese's version of List would have been like: Would Robert De Niro have played Oskar Schindler or Amon Goeth?) I'm not sure why anyone wanted to remake this specific material (James R. Webb's screenplay based on a novel by John D. MacDonald, revised here by Wesley Strick) since the premise of the film, an ex-con takes revenge on the man he blames for sending him to prison, is such a staple of melodrama. The only real twist to the premise is that the object of revenge is not the prosecuting attorney or the judge who sentenced Max Cady (De Niro), but his own defense attorney, Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte). Cady, while studying law in prison, learned that Bowden had suppressed evidence that he might have used at least to get a lighter sentence for Cady. (Bowden had been revolted by his client's rape and battery of a young woman.) Scorsese's version of the story is certainly watchable -- Scorsese has yet to make a film that isn't -- but it's just a melodrama ratcheted up to the heights. Scorsese has Freddie Francis film some dialogue scenes in closeups, with the camera slowly pulling in even closer on faces as the characters talk. But the one time Scorsese decides not to do this is actually the best scene in the film: when Cady talks with Bowden's daughter, Danielle (Juliette Lewis) on the stage of her high school's theater. Here the distance the camera keeps from them at first allows for a tension that grows in intensity, until finally the camera draws nearer. De Niro pulls out all the stops in a performance that earned him an Oscar nomination, but at times verges on self-parody, especially the Southern (?) accent that he adopts (and occasionally drops). Nolte and Jessica Lange (as Leigh, Bowden's wife) are fine, as one expects them to be, but the best performance is given by Lewis, who was 18 and makes Danielle a credible 15-year-old, her rebellious streak reinforcing her attraction to Cady at the same time that she knows to be wary of him. It earned her an Oscar nomination and launched her career. Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, the Cady and Bowden of the first film, appear in cameo roles -- a gimmick, and not an especially effective one.

When Sharon Lawrence showed up in “Drop Dead Diva” I couldn`t stop thinking of Ileana Douglas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But trying to find pictures, where you see the similarities as much as in moving pictures is kinda hard. Lets say Ileana Douglas on the left, born July 25th 1965 is a less refined version of Sharon Lawrence, born on the 29th of June 1961. Playing a sister couple wouldn`t be so wrong! They do look more alike than River and Joaquin Phoenix after all. ;)

October 5, 2017 will be a day that will go down in Hollywood history, the date that The New York Times published their shocking expose on Harvey Weinstein, detailing decades worth of sexual harassment charges. A few days later, another report from The New Yorker, by Ronan Farrow (the son of Mia Farrow and stepson of Woody Allen), levied even more serious charges, with three women coming forward to accuse the now-disgraced producer of rape, including actress Asia Argento, the daughter of famed Italian filmmaker Dario Argento. At some point when these accusations were being first brought forth, I couldn't help but think of the short-lived satire series Action, especially the series finale. It has always been one of my favorite cult classic shows, because it was so far ahead of its time in terms of its dark humor... and now it serves almost as foreshadowing of the despicable acts that took place in the shadows of the Hollywood spotlights.
Action first aired on Fox in the fall of 1999, with the network giving the show a 13-episode order for this biting satire, starring Jay Mohr as a hit Hollywood movie producer named Peter Dragon. While the show was praised by the critics, it was largely ignored by viewers, causing Fox to cancel the show after just eight episodes, refusing to air the final five, even though they had already been completed. The full 13-episode run would later air on Spike TV and then on Comedy Central, where I first discovered it in the early 2000s, as something I randomly happened to come across at 2 AM after the bars had closed.
When I moved to Los Angeles in 2008, I picked up the uncensored DVD set and watched the whole season in order. I was blown away by how brilliant the show was, and equally blown away by how forgotten the show had become, even though it was basically the precursor to Entourage (but much funnier). I had watched the whole series/season because a friend and I were writing an Action script, set in present day, a decade after the events of the show, which was definitely a fun experience, even though it ultimately went nowhere (Not-So-Pro Tip: don't write stuff based on an existing IP unless you have the rights to said IP...). Throughout the past 10 years, there were a handful of times when I'd pop in that DVD again and revisit the series, just as a reminder of how brilliant the show is... but that's not why I re-watched it again over the past few days.
I'm guessing that most, if not all of you reading this, have never seen the show, so I supposed what follows would be a spoiler alert, 18 years later, but it's kind of a chicken or the egg scenario, since you can't really be spoiled if you've never heard of the show before reading the spoilers... but we're getting sidetracked. The whole first season followed Peter Dragon as he tries to recover from his first ever box office flop after a string of hits. Peter surrounds himself with some very unique company, such as Wendy Ward (Illeana Douglas), a former child star turned high-end prostitute turned Peter's new development executive, Stuart Glazer (Jack Plotnick), the president of production at Peter's production company whom Peter treats like a lowly intern, Bobby Gianopolis (Lee Arenberg), the secretly-gay head of the studio who is also married to Peter's ex-wife Jane (Cindy Ambuehl) and Adam Rafkin (Jarrad Paul), the writer of Peter's new film, Beverly Hills Gun Club

New York Stories - Uneven Anthology
One of those 'anthology' films that pops up every once in a while, though rarely much more than a curiosity. Three short films, directed by three well respected directors of the time. Supposedly these would be directors who are thought of as 'New York' centric, and Scorcese and Allen certainly seem to fit the bill, but I don't think Coppola quite qualifies (unless you are counting 'The Godfather'?)
Anyways, saw this one in the theater when it was released. I really liked the Scorcese segment "Life Lessons" with Nick Nolte as the famous expressionistic artist with a young protoge, especially the scene of him painting, with the Bob Dylan song in the background (probably one of my favorite "artist" movies of all time, oddly enough). The Woody Allen segment is very funny, and harkens back to some of his earlier films, almost like the pressure of having to be 'artistic' was lifted from him. Coppola's just falls flat, and is an ordeal to sit through. But this is usually the case with these 'anthology' type movies, there is usually one really good one, and a couple so-so segments.
some other ones: O Henry's Full House, Boccacio '70, Spirits of the Dead, Four Rooms
2.5 stars (Oedipus Wrecks - Woody Allen), 1.5 stars (Life Without Zoe - Francis Coppola), 3.5 stars (Life Lessons - Martin Scorsese)
Released 1989, First Viewing June 1989

"Connecticut in the Movies" Drops Today
I have multiple reasons for being excited about Ileana Douglas’s new book Connecticut in the Movies: From Dream Houses to Dark Suburbia, which is being released today. One is the author, who I knew way back (the late ’80s) when we were members of something called The Comedy Corps at the Manhattan Punchline Theatre, an institution that is sorely missed. We acted in scenes together, participated…

Bruce Campbell appears in Time Warp cult horror films doc.
Bruce Campbell appears in the star-studded documentary, Time Warp: The Greatest Cult Films of All Time – Vol. 2 Horror and Sci-Fi directed by Danny Wolf. What can we expect from this production?
Bruce Campbell has been a horror icon for over four decades. He is one of the few genre stars that has made several cult classics. When his name is mentioned immediately the Evil Dead trilogy springs to mind.
However, he has also appeared in Bubba Ho-Tep, Don Coscarelli’s adaptation of Joe R. Lansdale’s eccentric take on Elvis Presley as well as Bill Lustig’s Maniac Cop. Both films have their dedicated followers and aren’t gigantic mainstream franchises like A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th.
According to Collider, the actor is one of the featured celebrities in the upcoming horror documentary, Time Warp: The Greatest Cult Films of All Time – Vol. 2 Horror and Sci-Fi. Directed by Danny Wolf and released by Quiver Distribution, this particular segment of the three-part series is hosted by Joe Dante, John Waters, Ileana Douglas and Kevin Pollak.
George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead and Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre are just some of the highlighted titles that will be discussed. Campbell will be sharing the spotlight with some of his contemporaries like Jeff Goldblum, Roger Corman and Rob Zombie.
Currently, the first part in this series which covers Midnight Madness will be coming to On Demand and Digital on Apr. 21. The Rocky Horror Picture Show, The Big Lebowski and This Is Spinal Tap are some of the featured films that will be commented on by the directors and actors alike.

CAPE FEAR (1990) “A thoroughly upsetting romp. I mean, how were DeNiro’s family members able to love him or even be comfortable alone in a room with him after this. I don’t know if he pulled off the Southern thing, but he’s got the lunatic rapist down solid. Also you got JoeDBake and alternate reality 44th President Fred Thompson, plus this really great shot of a phone that made me long for the tactile satisfaction of non-touchpad dialing.  -Donnie Gazelle
“I hadn’t really seen too many Bobby D. movies yet when I saw this. Maybe just MIDNIGHT RUN and WE’RE NO ANGELS? And I was fucking SCARED of him after this. Ileana Douglas is a fun chick! Don’t take a bite out off her face! This was from that period where Nolte was believable as a normal husband and father, like when he was PEOPLE’S ‘sexiest man alive’ after PRINCE OF TIDES. Now he’s inconceivable as anything other than versions of his character from DOWN AND OUT IN BEVERLY HILLS. I forgot he was ever civilized. Man i do not ever want too go to prison OR be responsible for someone insane GOING to prison.” -Tommy Gazelle
