Itschan Kala gleicht eher einem Freilichtmuseum als einer Stadt. Die Innenstadt ist voller restaurierter historischer Gebäude und sehr angenehm zu Fuss zu entdecken. Die islamische Architektur hat sich seit dem Mittelalter kaum verändert. Die Altstadt ist ca. 400x720m groß und ist ringsum von einer fast völlig intakten Stadtmauer eingeschlossen. Zugegebenermaßen wird hier doch wohl auch viel renoviert/restauriert. Die Mauer ist auch zugänglich, vor allem Abends bietet sich einem ein toller Blick auf Ichan Qala.

In meiner Unterkunft hatte ich beim Frühstück eine Gruppe deutscher Touristen getroffen, welche mich kurzerhand zu ihrer geführten Stadttour von 9-14Uhr einluden. Um einen weiteren guten Einblick in die Altstadt zu bekommen, nahm ich das Angebot dankend an. Vieles an geschilderten Fakten resp. Infos's kannte ich bereits aus meinen Recherchen, andererseits auch nett, den Vormittag mit anderen zu verbringen, mit denen man besser als mit den meisten hier kommunizieren kann. Man hört viel Russisch und Usbekisch, offenbar auch einige Touristen aus Frankreich.

Wenn man vom Westtor (Ata Dareasa) aus die Stadt betritt, stößt man direkt auf das 28m hohe Minarett Kalta Minor, welches mit einem Durchmesser von 14,80m sehr gedrungen wirkt. Es wurde nie vollendet und sollte ursprünglich ca.70-80m hoch werden. Es ist aber das einzige, komplett mit Fliesen versehen Minarett. Geschichten dazu, warum nicht fertiggestellt, gibt es mehrere. Gleich nebenan liegt der Kunja Ark ("Alte Zitadelle"). Er stammt zum Großteil in der heutigen Form aus der Zeit 1686-88 und war bis in die 1830er Wohnsitz der Khans von Chiwa. Sehenswert sind der Thronsaal sowie die Sommer- bzw. Wintermoschee im Ark. Interessant sind auch die Geldscheine aus Seide im Museum, welche außerhalb Chinas wohl nur hier gefertigt wurden. Da macht Geldwäsche dann doch mal Sinn. Die ältesten Fundamente des "Ark" stammen ca. aus dem 5.Jd.n.Chr.

Neben dem Ark stehen mehrere große Topf- und Fassöfen. In dem Fassöfen backte ein Frau gerade eine Art Fladenbrot, welches aber auch klein geschnittenen Gebüse, Zwiebeln und Gewürze enthielt. Knusprig und noch warm smeckt es am Besten!

Im Herzen der Altstadt und wahrscheinlich auf den Fundamenten der ältesten Bauwerke der Stadt liegt die Dschuma Moschee (Freitagsmoschee). Die Moschee ist eines der ältesten Gebäude der Stadt und stammt aus dem 10. Jahrhundert, obwohl sie im 18. Jahrhundert wieder neu aufgebaut wurde. Die große Gebetshalle wirkt wie ein dichter Wald mit 212 Holzsäulen. Jede der Säulen ist mit kunstvollen Verzierungen geschnitzt und dekoriert. Diese Kunst der khoresmischen Holzschnitzerei wurde im Laufe der Jahrhunderte zu einem Meisterwerk der Handwerkstechnik verfeinert. Eine der Säulen stammt aus Indien und zeigt, wie eng die Beziehungen zwischen den Ländern der Seidenstraße waren.

Die Gruppe legte eine kleine Pause in einem Cafe namens "Terassa" direkt am Ark/Kalar Minor ein, wo wir uns bei Tee oder frischen Säften erfrischten und die leichte Briese auf der Dachterrasse genossen.

Der Tasch-Hauli-Palast ("Steinpalast") wurde im 19.Jahrhundert erbaut und verfügt über drei große Höfe, die mit zahlreichen Korridoren und Durchgängen verbunden sind. Der Palast wurde zwischen 1832 und 1841 erbaut und erstaunt mit der Pracht seiner exquisiten Dekoration wie geschnitzten Holzsäulen und Mauerwerk. War allem die hohen, mit Majolika-Fliesen bedeckten Wände des Empfangs- und Gerichtssaals stechen ins Auge. Teilweise wirken die Ornamentefelder an den Wänden wie riesige blau-weiße Wandteppiche.

Nachdem mir das Essen gestern sehr geschmeckt und das Restaurant nett war, verschlug es mich zum Abendessen heute wieder dorthin, es gab meinen ersten Teller Plov. Ansonsten werde ich früh ins Bett gehen gehen, da ich für morgen früh vor meinem Tagesausflug noch etwas geplant hatte.

Shergazi-Khan Madrasa, built by the hands of slaves, stands as a fascinating monument of the 18th century. One of the oldest buildings in Ichan-Kala — an ancient walled town — the madrasa is located in the very heart of modern Khiva. The story of this site is that of power, revolt, and murder.

Khan Shergazi ordered the madrasa to be built, but had no inkling it would ultimately lead to his demise. Although the overall architectural achievements of the site have been surpassed and faded into history, the history here is no less vibrant today.

Shergazi Khan was born in Bukhara, although the exact date of his birth is unknown. It was here that he studied in the madrasa and quickly became known as a well-educated person. In 1714, after the death of Yadigar Khan, Shergazi Khan ascended the throne to become the ruler of the Khiva Khanate. Research suggests he was the last powerful and influential ruler in the history of Khiva. In 1717, Shergazi Khan used cunning military strategy to defeat the first expedition of the Russian Army into Central Asia. According to some sources, surviving soldiers were captured and made slaves. A similar fate befell soldiers from Khorasan, Mashhad, and Merv, cities Shergazi Khan’s army captured the next year — survivors were taken to Khiva as prisoners and forced in slave labor.

Khiva's city walls enclose the Ichan Kala on four sides. These walls provided vital protection from marauding Turkoman tribes and were previously supplemented by a surrounding moat. The original foundations date as far back to the fifth century although the strongest sections were added by Arang Khan, in 1686-88. Today most of the walls have been restored, although some sections remain untouched.

Islam-Khodja Complex is one of the pearls of Ichan-Kala - Khiva’s historical part, which was the first Uzbekistan’s site included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1990. Although the madrasah and minaret of the complex were built only in 1908 - 1910, they are the most prominent of Ichan-Kala, its landmark. The complex is famous thanks to the contrast between its Ichan-Kala’s tallest minaret and smallest madrasah, as the architect of the complex designed. Thus the minaret, visible at a long distance, looks even grander.
