A Warm Cup Of Tea On A Cold Winter Night - A Deltarune Fic
When Pink woke up this morning, they felt as if they were freezing.
"Oh.." For a moment, they had felt normal, warm even, "What a lovely morn-"
But then the sleep had left their eyes, and they had been hit with a wave of pure cold.
"What the.." Their brow furrowed. They began to hug themselves, softly rubbing their shoulders in a meager attempt to garner some warmth, "Did winter come early or somethin'?"
Chuckling at their own joke, they hopped out of their bed and barely repressed shivers as they walked towards the bathroom.
They looked at themselves in the mirror.
(... For a moment, they could've sworn their eyes were pure white, looking almost.. frozen over.)
But as soon as they blinked, they were back to normal.
... Well this was a confusing situation, wasn't it?
Sighing, they felt their signature salesman smile begin to form on their face, almost subconsciously.
"Those bills won't pay themselves, Pink!" Though their voice was enthusiastic and carefree, it was certainly not genuine, "You wouldn't want to end up like.. Him now, would you?"
With that last, scathing reminder of their past.. business partner, they fell into the routine that had become the status quo for them for all these years.
Everything was fine. Everything was perfectly okay. Nothing was out of order.
----
"Would you perhaps be interested in a flower bracelet?" Their charismatic and suave voice was a little.. off today, but they doubted that any of the customers could tell the difference, "It would match your eyes!"
The Tasque they were advertising to looked them dead in the eyes and replied: "meowowow meowmeowmeow mrow"
.. What were they expecting?
Still, The Tasque seemed to be somewhat interested in what they were selling, judging by the look in its eye and the fact it hadn't walked away.
(.. What? When you work in sales for a long time you learn to pick up on signs!)
They clasped their hands together, "Wonderful! I'll go fetch it for you right now!"
Humming as they rummaged around their store looking for the damned bracelet, they opened various compartments and whatnot as the looked around.
Where did they put it again? They could've sworn they placed it right next to-
❤️ Iceshock.
... What?
Peeping their head outside their store, they met the eyes of the Tasque once more.
"I apologize, but did you say something?"
They watched the Tasque tilt its head in pure befuddlement.
.. Strange.
"Ah. My mistake then."
Stepping back inside of their store, they readied themselves to begin aimlessly searching for.. whatever it was they were looking for before.
That must've been a fluke, they told themselves, must've been the wind.
Internally, they scolded themselves for bringing it up. It was the number one rule of salesmanship: Always act like everything is fine, even when it isn't. Never make the customer uncomfortable.
The Tasque must be getting tired of waiting at this point. They really needed to speed it up-
❤️ Iceshock.
Was their store always this cold?
❤️ Iceshock.
Why was their vision getting blurry?
❤️ Iceshock.
...
They blinked, wincing due to how bright everything was.
What had happened?
Everything was fine one second, and then the next-
... Wait a minute.
The customer.
Racing outside, they mentally prepared a thousand apologies for making the Tasque wait so long. Maybe they could throw in a free subscription for-
The Tasque wasn't there.
It.. it must've gotten tired of waiting and left.
Yeah. That was it.
... At least that's one less customer they'd have to pacify today?
Yes. This was a good thing. A good thing.
They plastered on their trademark Addison grin, and waited for any potential customers.
...
(Since when did their ring get so numbing?)

i am in the very small minority that thinks noelle wasn't actually killing darkners in the weird route. snowgrave is specifically labelled as "fatal" while iceshock is not.
they don't work like human beings, where your cells start dying if you're encased in ice. they're COMPUTER PROGRAMS; computer programs freeze. get it?
it still sucks that you did all that. everyone gets frozen and then left behind in the cyber world. but berdly was the only one you KILLED.
#honestly i feel like people lose sight of this? there's a reason it says 'FROZEN' when you defeat a darkner with iceshock#and not 'KILLED' or something. i mean that would be edgy but also like#snowgrave says 'fatal'; iceshock does not.#i definitely think the weird route is way more of a 'slow burn' than undertale's no mercy route.#or uh. slow freeze.#i do think it would be really interesting if it was killing the darkners#like how tvlandofficiall talks about it - it further reinforces the idea that darkners 'don't matter'#you kill all these darkners and it's fine but OH when you kill a LIGHTNER there's no going back#that's the moment with all the heaviness and importance placed on it as if all those other lives were nothing#but ultimately i find it more likely that toby was having a little fun eith the confept of computer programs freezing#deltamusings

It's so interesting to me that the widely accepted theory for Deltarune is that it'll end up being Us, the player, vs. Kris in the end. I understand why this is the perspective a lot of people have- Kris doesn't rip their soul out for no reason, obviously, and based on everything we've seen, such as the Post Spamton-NEO dialogue choices, it very much seems like we have the ability to make Kris make choices they otherwise wouldn't- but it seems especially cynical to me to assume that means Kris is going to be against us, or even that there is an antagonistic relationship between Kris and the player at all.
From everything we've seen, such as Kris' room in the light world being almost completely barren, and Toriel's memory of Kris asking when their horns would grow in, it doesn't seem like Kris likes themselves that much- and with that perspective, and the knowledge via Catti that she and Kris used to try and summon demons together, I've always had the perspective that we exist within the narrative of Deltarune less as a malevolent outsider forcibly imposing our will on the world and more as a benevolent force, called on deliberately by Kris' own actions to help them reshape their life into something they like more.
I think people tend to get very caught up in thinking of UTDR as very inherently cynical stories, especially in their metanarratives, due to the Undertale Genocide route. But that isn't what these stories are- or rather, it's not what they're *supposed* to be. The Genocide route, and its Deltarune counterpart, the Weird/Snowgrave route, are *corruptions* of the existing story and world, caused not by the player's mere existence, but by the player's refusal to engage with the game the way it asks you to- for Genocide, you have to actively go out of your way, to great resistance, to hunt down and kill every single monster, despite the game telling you that showing mercy is the best option. And in Snowgrave, you have to actively push back against the existing narrative in very specific ways, using the more diverse combat system to circumvent the restrictions it has- rather than attacking enemies yourself to kill them, as that simply causes enemies to run away, you circumvent this by manipulating Noelle to freeze them all with Iceshock, preventing them from running away. Noelle DOES NOT do this deliberately based on everything we've seen, and it is very apparent from her dialogue (both internal and external) that it is unnatural to her and that we, the player, are making her do this. And in the Snowgrave route, it is very understandable that Kris would take an antagonistic stance towards us, given, well, Snowgrave, but it must be remembered that the Snowgrave/Weird route is paralleling the Genocide route, and how did that route end? With the demon that comes when you call its name ushering the world, and our influence upon it, into oblivion. That sounds to my ear awfully similar to how the Roaring has been described. Some people have theorized that perhaps the Weird route will be necessary to avoid the Roaring happening- but what if it's the opposite? That's a separate subject, though, and I'll leave it for later. Given all the very apparent parallels between Kris' design and Chara's, mirroring the parallels between Snowgrave and Genocide, it makes perfect sense that Kris would be antagonistic towards us at the Weird route's end- but in the normal route, what have we truly done to warrant antagonism from Kris?
It's very heavily implied, if not outright stated, that Kris' life before Chapter 1 is... not exactly good. Their parents are divorced, very messily, their brother is away at college, their friendship with Noelle has grown distant, and they've been unable to befriend Susie like they wanted to. But then, we show up, almost out of nowhere, and Kris is whisked away on a magical adventure, where they can be the special version of themselves they've always wanted to be. Sure, they can't use magic themselves in the Dark World, but they can ACT, which seems to be enough. And yes, we can make choices they don't necessarily agree with, like saying Kris is fine after Spamton NEO, but Kris also has Ralsei and Susie as a support network, who see through that lie- and many of us don't make that contrary choice at all. I know *I* didn't. And the crucial thing to remember- we aren't completely controlling Kris. Even when Kris HASN'T removed the Soul, they've acted independently of us. They block King's attack at Susie, they back away from Spamton NEO, and perhaps most importantly of all, is Ralsei- Ralsei, who on two separate occasions actively stops Kris from being observed by us, proving this is possible both without removing the Soul, AND for people other than Kris to do. Kris is not a slave to our will- they go along with us by choice, even when we make decisions they don't agree with. Because they DO have the power- the Determination- to resist us. But they don't. What does that tell us about Kris, and the greater narrative?
Circling back to the metanarrative point to conclude this excessively verbose post, what we need to remember moving forward is that Toby Fox is not a cynical writer- at least, not by nature. He expects you to engage with the narrative he constructs on its own terms, as any writer would, but he also wrote the Genocide route specifically to deconstruct how the refusal to do so will inherently ruin the story. As Sans says when he dunks on you, if you actually cared about being friends with him, you wouldn't be on the Genocide route. There's no reason Deltarune won't be the same. Undertale did not punish the player for playing the game, it critiqued the player for not engaging with its narrative. Our ability to Save and Load didn't make us evil- our influence being exerted on the world of Undertale wasn't inherently bad. Even when it comes to actions like killing Toriel at the end of the Ruins and reloading to spare her- this isn't evil. In fact, it is the opposite. Flowey attempts to make us think it is, but he's already been lost to the same apathetic lack of engagement that we are in the Genocide route. Our presence in Undertale is not inherently negative- without our part in that story, the monsters would never have been freed from the Underground. I have no reason to believe Deltarune will be any different.
TL;DR: Our influence over the story of Undertale was not inherently bad unless we misused it by refusing to engage with it on its terms. This led to the Genocide route. The Weird/Snowgrave route is a deliberate parallel to this. As such, there is no reason to assume our influence over Deltarune is inherently bad; it will only be bad if it is similarly misused. The same can be said about our relationship to Kris- it is not inherently antagonistic, and has no reason to be unless misused, such as in Snowgrave.

The Virovirokun you are forced to battle after Noelle joins will always freeze in one Iceshock, regardless of Noelle's magic stat. Every other Virovirokun requires more than one Iceshock to freeze when Noelle has a lower magic stat.

one thing I don't like is the new iceshock ending. before ice shocking sans felt like true justice for his actions, but now Susie will actually get mad at you for doing it and throw away the stick. idk It just feels like punishing the player for something that's absolutely justified, no matter if he killed Suzy or not. he still has probably killed way more people than genocide frisk/chara. unless the ending I saw is if you iceshock him in a ruthless route. then that makes sense
we didnt change anything about the ice shock ending, actually. you just did something different this time around.

thinking about how kris's shield is used to harm
usually, shields are seen as a more passive weapon. which makes sense- shields are for defense, they're to protect you and the ones around you
swords are the offense, the aggressors, the weapon one would use for harm. shields are the defense, the protectors, the weapon one would use to mitigate harm
and yet in snowgrave route, the weapon kris is forced to use is the shield. using the sword beats enemies up, but it can't kill any of them (in fact, attacking using your sword aborts the snowgrave route). in a way, the sword is the protector in this situation- warning the enemies to flee
conversely, the shield is the aggressor. the tp gained from defending (16) is the exact amount of tp needed to cast noelle's iceshock spell. essentially, kris's passiveness is exactly what allows noelle to kill the citizens of cyber world
the shield is the danger. the shield is what allows the player to force noelle to attack every round. the shield is the last thing an opponent sees before they see ice, the last thing they'll ever see

An Angel Is Born - A Deltarune Fic
Part 2 of "A Warm Cup Of Tea On A Cold Winter Night"
----
Pink had begun getting really into The Light World recently.
They had been reading about the clouds, the sun, the sky.
It wasn't for any particular reason, mind you - they simply found themselves getting a little.. curious all of a sudden, that was all.
(That was the same thing he said before.. before-)
In their studies, they had discovered something that truly fascinated them.
The Lightners worshipped a deity - The Angel. The same way Darkners worshipped Lightners.
"What in Light's name could possibly be above.. well, a Lightner?" They had thought.
Thus, they had done more research into the subject, and well..
What they had found was wonderful.
The Angel was incomprehensible to any eye - Lightner, Darkner, Human, Monster.. no mortal eye could ever truly understand it. The Angel watched over them all in it's omnipresent eye, guiding them to whatever destinies it believed best for them. It had the ability to control the very fate of everybody that existed in this plane of reality. Those who were lucky enough to be shone on by it's light, were rumored to be blessed with powers and abilities that would allow them to shape their own destinies, as well!
It was while they were reading about this absolutely glorious being they were visited by none other than Blue.
"Heya, Pink." Blue greeted, his cheerful voice just barely managing to hide the pure exhaustion in his tone, something only an Addison would ever be able to recognize. He glanced towards their storefront as he leaned on their cash register, "Business slow today?"
"No!" They yelled out on instinct.
'I am not like him whatsoever I am not like him whatsoever I am not like him whatsoever-'
"Pink..?" Blue had put his hand on their shoulder, a concerned look on his face. "Are you okay? Do you want to clock out early today-"
They cleared their throat, putting on a deceptively calm voice in order to soothe Blue's nerves, "Don't worry. I'm.. I'm fine. It's just been a bit of a.. stressful day, that's all."
Blue's face looked emphatic as he walked up to stand beside them, "It's okay to admit that you're not okay sometimes, you know that right?" He giggled, "We're family. And family is always there for eachother. No matter what. If you want, I can.."
Pink found themselves spacing out as Blue talked about what has could do to make them feel better. After the.. incident, he had been focusing more on making sure no one's feelings were ignored. They didn't do it on purpose, mind you. It was certainly a sweet gesture that Blue was willing to do for them, but-
❤ Iceshock.
There it was. That.. voice again.
They had been hearing it every day these past few weeks, trying to get them to examine random things more closely, to talk to people they didn't even know the names of. They were beginning to sick of its apparent omnipresence over-
... Wait a minute.
❤ Iceshock.
"Maybe I could even get Orange to chip in, if he's not too busy with that new commission he was talking about earlier- Pink?"
'The Angel watched over them all with its omnipresent eye, guiding them to whatever destinies it believed best for them...'
❤ Iceshock.
"Pink, are you okay..? Do I need to call somebody-"
❤ Iceshock.
...
"P-Pink, what are you doing-"
...
They awoke to the sight of an ice sculpture right next to them, miraculously not melted in the heat of their store.
"Oh? How nice of somebody to gift me this.." They murmured tiredly as they began to drag the statue into the backroom of their shop, "Was it Blue? He always did like giving gifts.. I'll have to thank him for it in the morning.."
---

"deltaswap" concept - Deltarune Role Reversal (name may be temporary)
Deltarune Role Reversal is my concept of a deltaswap au, where instead of swapping roles and personalities, a change in circumstances have occurred, leading to the roleswaps.
LIGHTNER SWAPS (chapters 1 and 2, as more chapters come out more lightner swaps will happen)
Kris - Kris keeps their role as the vessel for the player, nothing much has changed with them. Since Susie is not in the main fun gang in this au kris has her hp values in the dark world.
Noelle - Noelle slept in on the first day of the group projects, leading to her joining Kris in their group project. She takes Susie's role in the dark world, and kris's hp values. Since she no longer is associated with the weird route Iceshock is the main damaging spell that you have, and you gain the ability to cast Blueshock when fighting the final bosses of each chapter.
Susie - Susie made it on time to class this time, and ended up pairing with Berdly. She shows up in the chapter 2 dark world where in the normal route she ends up realizing that violence and threats are not the solution to everything, like she does in chapter 1 of Deltarune. In the weird route, however, she uses Rude buster, which now deals fatal damage. The snowgrave replacement has not been chosen yet, but she casts it on Berdly, and instead of being encased in ice, he is just lying on the ground, with it being unclear if he is alive or not.
Berdly - Berdly keeps his role, but in chapter 1 he is the person you have to talk to to progress since Noelle is not there and Susie does not want Kris joining their group, saying "Hey, I am already IN a group, find your OWN!" Several of the chapter two interactions are different, as Berdly is still scared of Susie.
Asgore - Asgore is still the chief of police, and got the house in the divorce. This is subject to change if or when we find the reason Asgore and Toriel are divorced in Deltarune, but he is trying to repair his relationship with Toriel. He is an avid gardener, which will likely play into the Chapter 3 dark world when Chapter 3 is released (if there are things related to how Toriel bakes it will likely be replaced with flowers and other plants)
Toriel - Toriel is struggling to make ends meet with a teachers salary, so she started a small bakery near the lake, but she tends to give away food to others, she tends to bake Cinnamon-Butterscotch pies for other people in town. In chapter one she gives one to Kris, and you can decide to share it with Noelle right when you get it (who unlike Susie stays in your party when you exit the chapter 1 dark world,) or hoard it, keeping it to yourself, which Toriel is annoyed from, but not shocked. Doing this allows you to give it to Asgore, eat it in the light world (doing so would restore all HP, but it is unclear if you will be able to fight in the light world in the future,) or keep it for the dark world, turning it into an item that will bring all party members to max, since you cannot get the topcake in this (spincake is available however in the bake sale [more info on that in the chapter one darkners section] and in castle town from chapter 2 onward)
Papyrus - He has taken over his brother's store (temporarily) because sans is is "PICKING UP HIS SOCK"
As of now there are no more lightner swaps, but there are likely to be more when more chapters come out.
CHAPTER 1 DARKNER SWAPS
Ralsei - Ralsei keeps his role, but the interactions with him are much different, as Noelle also picks up on the fact he looks very similar to Asriel when he removes his hat.
Rouxls Kaard - Rouxls Kaard takes the place of Lancer, starting out trying to stop you he eventually warms up to you. He also tries to stop Noelle from freeing Kris and Ralsei as he does not want them to be hurt by the darkner who has taken it upon themselves to protect the dark fountain and carry out the will of the Roaring Knight.
Lancer - Lancer takes Seam's role as the chapter one shopkeep. After his dad mysteriously disappeared he started looking for him, instead finding a "cool house" with items inside, that he decided to start selling (so he could buy heart donuts from the bake sale) He is also the one who gives you hints on how to find the chapter 1 secret boss.
the original starwalker - he is pissed off
Malius - Malius is where top chef is in deltarune, but keeps his role, being the one to repair (and fuse) items and heal the party.
Top Chef - Top Chef is where Malius is in deltarune. The topcake is inaccesable as he already delivered it to Clover's birthday party. Talking to him allows you to purchace a SpinCake for 1000 dark dollars, or for free in castle town.
Seam - Seam takes the place of Rouxls Kaard, trying to stop you from reaching the dark fountain, and selling some items to you before the final fight. He is the court wizard, and is still the shopkeeper in castle town, seeming to know something about the dark crystals that you can collect. He also enters kris's inventory before they leave the dark world in chapter 2.
Jevil - Jevil takes the place of the spade king, since the spade king was mysteriously missing the knight decided instead to put the jester in control of the dark world, since he was almost as powerful as the king. Since Jevil came into power he has acted differently than he used to, disregarding Rouxls Kaard, who used to be above him, and not being as close to Seam as he used to be. He does not hate lightners as much as King from deltarune does, but he still holds a grudge. After he is defeated Lancer takes over as king. In chapter 2 Jevil gets a room in Ralsei's castle.
King - King is the Jevil replacement. Someone strange contacted him, promising power beyond his wildest dreams. When he found the ShadowCrystal he started going insane, and tried to take over the dark world, but Seam managed to imprison him. His fight is in the red soul mode like Jevi's, and his attacks are just much harder versions of his attacks in the King fight, with his special attack being a barrage of large spades. Defeating him gets you either the ButterflyCloak (lowers the cost of heal prayer and gives more magic power, meant for ralsei) or the ChainWhip (does extra physical damage, increases graze range, and gives another attack to XSlash [which is not mentioned in the description])
Special mentions - The kings and the animals are in the other's cage, just being a purely visual swap. The triple-hathy encounter is three rudins instead, the rudin and hathy stand swap places in the bake sale, and Clover's outer two heads swap interests and personalities.
CHAPTER 2 DARKNER SWAPS
Spamton - Spamton the car salesman has managed to make it big in cyber city, even going as far as taking over the entirety of cyber world, and overthrowing Queen after encountering the Roaring Knight. He has taken an interest in Susie, thinking that she could help him by opening more dark worlds to spread his business to. Since he has not been corrupted by the man on the phone he does not talk the way he does in deltarune, instead being much more similar to the other Addisons. The arcade fighting game is also replaced with a racing game, and the final fight is a Mario Kart-esque experience, where you race against Spamton to gain items to damage his car, and dodge bullets.
Nubert - Everybody loves him.
Sweet Kappn' Cakes - The music trio keep there role as the rebels, not liking what Spamton has done to cyber world.
Maus and Mauswheel - Maus and Mausewheel take the place but not role of Tasque and Tasque manager, maus appearing in the cyber field coming out of the monitors.
Taskque and Tasque Manager - They take the place but not role of Maus and Mausewheel, Tasque showing up when you lovingly caress the cheese, scaring away the Maus. (Also if you manage to encounter a Maus with Susie in the party you can act with her to "upgrade" the Maus into a Tasque still, but as far as I know this is only possible if you get far enough into the Weird Route as all Maus encounters are repalced with Tasque encounters, and vica verca) Tasque Manager is in the kitchen trying to get the Swatchlings to work faster.
Queen - After being overthrown by Spamton she was forced to leave her mantion, but remembering a machine that Swatch made she checked the basement, and a plan started to form, but every time she tried to break back in she failed, eventually getting a call from someone mysterious, leading to her gong crazy. She has some form of malware, and wherever she goes she is followed by a Virovirokun, which seems to annoy her. Like Spamton she comes out of a dumpster and tries to convince Kris to help her. If you go to a shop she has set up in the garbage dump you can buy the KEYGEN, and also get healthpoison (called healthpotion in the shop,) VirusSword (Called AntiVirus in the shop, claims to deal extra damage against virus-type enemies) and the FakeCheck(Called CheckmarkBadge in the shop) (when you buy them and check them in the inventory they "glitch" and turn into the bad versions) When you get the empty disc she then copies her harddrive over to it, and then you put it into the robot. It appears to fail, but then when you turn to leave she ambushes you, trying to claim your soul to be strong enough to not only take back over the dark world, but escape the "strings" that the malware uses to control her. The fight, instead of using the yellow soul mode, uses the purple soul mode, since queen represents the internet (the world wide web,) pressing Z allows you to swap between the two layers (up-down, and left-right) (this will change if/when purple soul mode is used in a secret boss fight to reflect it's secondary gimmick.) Defeating her gives you either the FireWall, which decreases the tp cost for fire-casters, or the AcidGlass(Increases physical damage greatly, but decreases magic, meant to be equipped to Noelle)
No special mentions for chapter two
Please let me know if you would be interested in me making a sideblog for this AU where I would use the undertale text box generator to show how scenes would play out, talk about any other changes I think of, and have the ability to send asks about the au

the way the world of deltarune treats darkners reminds me of bugs. you can kill a butterfly, end its entire life in an instant. it has no way of knowing this will happen. it is just existing and then suddenly its life is cut short. and literally nothing will change. there will be absolutely no consequences for you doing this. you just killed and nothing will come of it. nobody will ever notice.
you are not locked into the snowgrave route until you kill a lightner. all of those other lives didn't matter; they are "beneath" you.
...that or they're just not dead because "snowgrave" is labelled as fatal and iceshock is not, and also freezing is a thing that happens to computer programs sometimes so you're really just incapacitating them for the time being which kinda sucks but you're not like murdering them it's not super duper significant
#i actually wrote this initially about an ant. but i feel far fewer people have killed a butterfly#people see a butterfly as 'more important.' it's more alive. it matters more. but this is just because of its beauty#where we see beauty we see innocence. it feels repulsive to kill a butterfly but if you kill an ant it's just 'oh.'
