Tried to work out the travel times for BG3 because the speed at which the romances progress personally disturbs me (slow down!). It's basically a week - maybe a little less or more. Not helping. At least you're so likely to get lost and side-tracked by the endless dangers in the endless open spaces of the Fields of the Dead it's going to stretch that out to a tenday or so. Got distracted working out where we start in Act 1. Ended up glaring at several fictional maps, playing with calculators, and now I've decided we should've started the game in fucking Cormyr.

(Do you know how much mountainous terrain there is between Elturgard and Baldur's Gate? Zero. None. Nada. This is open grassland with some hilly terrain and no forests or woods going westwards. Where did this mountain pass come from? You know where there are mountains? The Sunset Mountains and the Stormhorns to the East, standing between Cormyr and the Sword Coast. And I don't even know what the hell is happening with the waterways in Act 1 and 2. What is Reithwin built on. Is it the coast? Because we're firmly inland. But the Chionthar does not branch like that going westwards. What is happening.)

🚨FIC ANNOUNCEMENT 🚨

Hello! So, as you may know, I've been hard at work with a couple fics lately. ✍️🤡

While I'm still working on these, I had another idea that I ended up completing over the weekend to give myself a little break. Yes, I know - taking a break from writing a fic by writing another fic seems like a weird way to TLC 😂

The first chapter of my newest fic, Love That Sponge, will be coming at some point tomorrow! The second/final chapter is done, but I'll be waiting until next Tuesday to give myself some breathing room.

I'll be using the above banner for any fic updates. Anyway, here's the gist:

Spongebob kindly arranges a “practice date” for Squidward when the latter lands himself an actual date. The practice session inevitably goes wrong, but not for the reasons either of them expected. Or a slightly alternate ending to “Love That Squid” in which Spongebob manages to convince Squidward to finish their practice date, and how one final tenet changes everything.

Thinking about unsolicited concrit (because of my own experience with it) and you know, I get where these critics are coming from. You see potential in the thing and want the author to do better.

But... Fanfic isn't about offering the most polished version of your work for some people. Fanfic, for some people, is to write something so your mind finally shuts up. It's like a cat having the zoomies for some, and they just need to get it all out of their system. It's why you have "No beta, we die like x" tags or "I wrote this last night instead of sleeping" tags.

I saw someone say on here that you're not morally obligated to get better at your hobby, and I have to agree. And fanfic is a hobby.

Several weeks ago one of my coworkers called me over into her cubicle and gave me a very unexpected gift. Her mother passed away recently, and she'd been packing stuff up at her condo to give to relatives and sell, so the home could be sold. The mother was an avid knitter and crocheter, and when my coworker came upon her stash of equipment, she told me, she "immediately thought of me as someone who might get some use out of it."

So, I have inherited a varied collection of knitting needles and crochet hooks, cable needles, sewing needles, and, best of all, now-out-of-print pattern books, mostly for blankets, because that was what this lady loved to make most. Plus, I also have a bunch of gauge swatches she made, pinned to little bits of card covered in perfect schoolteacher handwriting setting out the patterns they were made to test.

And also...

My coworker brought another bag, full of yarn and...knitted blanket squares. Her mother's last started project, before she got too sick to continue. And she asked if there was anything I could do with it.

It turned out, there are twelve completed squares, and I quickly located the pattern book they are from amid those given to me. It's a book of 60 patterns, meant to be put together however the maker wishes into blankets of 20 squares. I figured out which of the numbered patterns were already made, and selected eight more that I thought might go well with them.

So now! I am working on completing! My coworker's mother's last knitting project!

And I really am feeling very good about doing it.
