Alien Ecosystems and Their Fragility: Understanding the Impact of Parasitic Threats
In The Age of Shaman Professor Elroy Book One: Shamanry Raised by J. George James, the impact of parasitic threats on alien species serves as a compelling lens through which to examine the fragility of extraterrestrial ecosystems. This article explores how parasitic threats can disrupt alien ecosystems, affecting not only individual species but also the broader ecological balance. By analyzing the dynamics of these parasitic interactions, we gain insight into the intricate web of interstellar ecological relationships and the implications for maintaining ecological stability.
The Dynamics of Parasitic Threats
Disruption of Alien Species
Parasitic threats can have profound effects on the health and survival of alien species. Parasites often exploit their hosts for resources, leading to various health issues ranging from reduced vitality to mortality. In The Age of Shaman Professor Elroy Book One: Shamanry Raised, Blue’s struggle with a parasitic infection highlights how these threats can compromise an alien’s physiological functions and overall well-being.
Case Study: Blue’s Infection Blue’s condition illustrates how parasites can impair essential functions, such as electroreception, which is crucial for his survival and interaction with his environment. This disruption not only affects Blue’s health but also his ability to fulfill ecological roles, such as foraging or predator avoidance.
Impact on Ecosystem Interactions
The health of individual species is closely tied to their role within the ecosystem. When parasites compromise a species, the ripple effects can extend throughout the ecosystem. For instance, a decline in the population of a host species due to parasitic infections can impact predator-prey relationships, competition for resources, and overall biodiversity.
Example: Predator-Prey Dynamics If a parasitized species is a primary food source for predators, its decline can lead to reduced prey availability for these predators. This, in turn, can cause shifts in predator populations and alter the balance of the ecosystem.
Ecosystem Balance and Fragility
Alien ecosystems, like their terrestrial counterparts, rely on a delicate balance of species interactions. Parasitic threats can destabilize this balance by causing imbalances in population dynamics, resource distribution, and species interactions. The fragility of alien ecosystems can be exacerbated by the unique and often extreme conditions in which these ecosystems exist, making them particularly vulnerable to disturbances.
Implications for Ecosystem Stability The introduction or spread of parasitic threats can lead to cascading effects throughout the ecosystem. For example, if parasites cause significant declines in key species, the resulting changes in species composition and interactions can lead to long-term ecological imbalances and the potential collapse of the ecosystem.
Broader Implications for Interstellar Ecological Balance
Interstellar Ecosystem Management
Understanding the impact of parasitic threats on alien ecosystems is crucial for managing and preserving interstellar ecological balance. Effective management strategies must consider the complex interactions between species and the potential consequences of parasitic threats. This includes monitoring for emerging parasitic diseases, implementing control measures, and developing strategies to support ecosystem resilience.
Cross-Species Disease Transmission
The study of parasitic threats also raises concerns about the potential for cross-species disease transmission between alien and human species. The introduction of alien parasites to human environments or vice versa could have unforeseen consequences for both ecosystems and health systems. Vigilance and preventative measures are essential to mitigate these risks and protect both alien and human species.
Conservation Efforts and Research
Conservation efforts in interstellar environments must address the challenges posed by parasitic threats. Research into the biology of alien parasites, their impact on host species, and ecosystem dynamics is vital for developing effective conservation strategies. This includes studying the life cycles of parasites, their ecological roles, and potential interventions to reduce their impact on ecosystems.
The impact of parasitic threats on alien species, as depicted in The Age of Shaman Professor Elroy Book One: Shamanry Raised, underscores the fragility of extraterrestrial ecosystems and the complex interdependencies within them. By examining how parasites disrupt species health and ecosystem balance, we gain valuable insights into the broader implications for interstellar ecological stability. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive understanding of alien ecosystems, proactive management strategies, and ongoing research to ensure the preservation of ecological harmony across the galaxy.

THE RAIDERS SPECIES: VERTIGAL (plural: Vertixes)
Coming from the frozen world of Vertences, Vertixes are one of few species to know their homeworld. This race of fox like canines are very centered on military and technological advancement. They are known mostly for their six ears and small size. Despite their size they are very strong as their planet is slightly more massive than others. Because of the frozen nature of their planet, all life on Vertences, including Vertixes, live beneath the surface in and near geothermal caves, but a great many things also live in the colder caves. Due to the low light of many of these caves, Vertixes mainly use echolocation to see and have such precise hearing that they can feel texture with sound. They also possess great night vision as bioluminesence tends to lighten many flora filled caves. Their legs are great at jumping which helps them navigate the greater caves of their world and their thick fur keeps them warm. Vertigan cities are very unique, typically being shaped by the caves they are built in. They are typically built in massive caves, one by an underground ocean is typically the best choice. Despite their limited surface access, vertixes have achieved intersteller status as of millenia ago like many others and have spread influence, becoming a very common species. Their similar genes to many also allowed cross-breeding to give many other common races the digitigrade legs they have. Vertixes come in two colors, blue and green, and some even grow horns and split horns like small antlers. The horns are often seen as a sign of power and strength, as many high ranked officials have them. Another type of vertigal is said to exist but hasn't been confirmed yet. A multicolor, bioluminesent, deep cave dwelling vertigal, that may have gone extinct hundreds of years ago.
After the century war, a Vertigan ship was on its patrol when it stumbled across an anomalous reading in a nearby system. The ship went to investigate, a deeper scan in system showed the signal to be coming from a moon. The ship moved in slow, maintaining scans. The signal source came from. A leftover berretans moonbase that was completed just after the war, too late to enter. Penetrating scans would not enter the structure, so the vertigan ship began using a drill beam to cut under the surface. The moonbase however was occupied by pereta forces and this would be the day of their awakening. The moonbase grabbed the vertigan ship with an attractor beam and was waiting to charge weapons to destroy it. The vertigan ship had weapons troubles as the gimbals were locked by the beam. Eventually they ere able to blast the emitter and get free. They pulled away to warn the galaxy, but were being jammed and a giant berretans warship, now under pereta control, went to intercept the destroyer. A chase battle commensed. A scan revealed holes in the destroyers shields and the vertigan ship maneuvered for a missile Salvo. The massive gemini-class was disabled and broke away, but the vertixes were too late. The moonbases weapons came online and blasted the ship to dust. Moonbase Alpha had come alive and later Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Epsilon followed. The Reconstruction War had begun.

I was in Star Fleet serving on a ship, and then I was moving into a different division. I remember seeing the name, or word Metalclaef or something similar to that spelling. He was the Captain or Rear Admiral of a ship or division.
The uniforms were the black combat uniforms. I was reading up on the surface operations blacks before I went to sleep so that may have played a part in that part of the dream.
I was also in a workshop, and the apprentice from B - L&G was there. She was messing about with a labelling machine for some reason.
The I was in a massive room, and there was some sort of monster or something trying to get through. Then there were 2 Superman's there. One in a black uniform, and had a Russian accent, and he seemed to be a bit more powerful, and took more charge than the traditional red and blue suit Superman.
He also had a slicked back hairstyle. When I looked around, I realised that we were on some sort of evactution footing for leaving Earth completely. There were people trying to break in, but there were soldiers trying to prevent them overwhelming the base. I don't remember what I had with me, but I assumed that I had things which contained important memories.
The base reminded me of the ships from Intersteller, there was so much equipment floating about. A room full of kitchen equipment. It felt like there was everything there.
Later on, we were walking around outside, and we were releasing giraffe from cages. The cages were insanely small, and I think a few of the giraffes were dead, or they were very slow moving.

(via What Can A Wrinkle in Time Teach Us About Writing? - Eva Langston)
Completed in 1960, L’Engle says the manuscript was rejected by at least twenty-six publishers because it was “too different.” It finally found a home in 1962 with the publisher Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and it went on to win the Newberry Medal along with many other honors. A Wrinkle in Time also became the first book in the Time Quintet, a series of novels L’Engle wrote about the Murry and O’Keefe families.
So anyway, what can we kidlit writers glean from this classic novel? Glad you asked! Here are five lessons writers can learn from Madeline L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time.
(By the way, if you haven’t read the book you might want to stop reading this post because there are almost certainly spoilers ahead.)
(And also by the way, were you aware that there is a graphic novel version of A Wrinkle in Time, illustrated by Hope Larson? I haven’t read it, but I think this is just the sort of story that would be AMAZING as a graphic novel.)
*This post contains a few Amazon affiliate links*
1. Don’t be afraid to “write up”
Don’t assume that just because you’re writing for children you need to dumb down your language, your ideas, or your themes. Though the suggested age range for A Wrinkle in Time is 10 to 14, L’Engle uses quite sophisticated language. Just take a look at the very first paragraph:
It was a dark and stormy night.
In her attic bedroom Margaret Murry, wrapped in an old patchwork quilt, sat on the foot of her bed and watched the trees tossing in the frenzied lashing of the wind. Behind the trees clouds scudded frantically across the sky. Every few moments the moon ripped through them, creating wraithlike shadows that raced along the ground.
Just as playing a sport with someone better than you can help you improve, reading something a little above their level can help kids increase their vocabulary and become better readers. Plus, there’s nothing kids hate more than being talked down to.
Not only does L’Engle give her kid readers lyrical and adult-like prose, she also trusts them with some adult-like ideas and themes such as conformity, the fifth dimension, and good versus evil.
2. Give your protagonist flaws
No one is perfect, so don’t forget to give your protagonist some real flaws. In A Wrinkle in Time, Meg is stubborn, impatient, impulsive, quick-tempered, and insecure. And with her glasses, braces, and unruly hair, she’s flawed (or at least she thinks so) in the looks department, too.
In many novels, the protagonist must overcome their weaknesses in order to reach their goal. In A Wrinkle in Time, however, Meg’s flaws are actually what help her defeat IT and save her little brother’s life. Instead of completely overcoming her flaws, she realizes that her greatest weaknesses can also be her greatest strengths. Her stubbornness makes her strong, her impatience and impulsivity come from passion. And, most importantly, despite her flaws, her family loves her, and she loves them. In the end, it’s love that saves the day.
One of the things I think works so well about A Wrinkle in Time is that Meg is so deeply flawed. She’s someone we can identify with, and hopefully she helps kid readers realize that one doesn’t have to be perfect or “fit in” in order to be loved.
3. Give your story a classic and well-paced start
Leo Tolstoy famously said, “All great literature is one of two stories; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town.”
A Wrinkle in Time is both. First, strange Mrs. Whatsit shows up at Meg’s house in the middle of the night, in the middle of a wild storm. As it turns out, Mrs. Whatsit and her friends have arrived in order to take Meg, her brother Charles Wallace, and her new friend Calvin on a journey across time and space.
The pacing of A Wrinkle in Time is on point. In the middle of Chapter One, Mrs. Whatsit shows up. I would call this the inciting incident – what gets the story started.
At the end of Chapter 3, Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin are whisked off into space with Mrs. Whatsit and her friends. I would call this the climax of Act One. According to Blake Snyder, author of Save the Cat, the act one climax is when “the main character enters an “upside down world” where they’re completely out of their element.” In Meg’s case, her “upside down world” is strange planets in other galaxies!
My copy of A Wrinkle in Time is approximately 200 pages. The children begin their intersteller journey around page 50: one-fourth of the way through the novel. And that, my friends, is what’s called good pacing. If it takes you longer than one-fourth of your novel to get to Act 2 and the real meat of your story, you’re probably spending too long getting your story started.
4. Give your story a turning point
At the story’s beginning, your protagonist should have a goal or desire that makes her take action. In Meg’s case, she wants to find her father. As your character reaches for her goal, increasing obstacles are put in her way. And then comes a midpoint, or twist. Often at this turning point, one of a few things happens:
The protagonist realizes her goal is not what she thought or not what she wants.
The protagonist realizes she will need to change her plan of action.
The protagonist gives up her old goal in place of a new one.
I’ll give you a classic example first. In The Wizard of Oz, the turning point is when Dorothy and her friends reach the Wizard (their goal), and realize that he won’t help them unless they kill the Wicked Witch of the West (which then becomes their new goal and new plan of action).
Similarly, in A Wrinkle in Time, the turning point happens when Meg finds her father:
She had been so certain that the moment she found her father everything would be all right. Everything would be settled. All the problems would be taken out of her hands. She would no longer be responsible for anything.
And instead of this happy and expected outcome, they seemed to be encountering all kinds of new troubles.
Meg reaches her goal but realizes it’s not what she thought. She saved her father, but in the process they had to leave Charles Wallace behind, in the grips of the terrible IT. At this point Meg realizes her father is not all-powerful, and she can’t depend on him to fix everything. Now she has a new goal: to save Charles Wallace. And she must do it all by herself.
5. Make your characters memorable
Even if it’s been awhile since you read A Wrinkle in Time, I’m sure you remember five-year-old genius Charles Wallace and redheaded Calvin O’Keefe with his freckles and too-short pants. Not to mention Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who, and Mrs. Which. I LOVE the portrayal of these three magical ladies:
Mrs. Whatsit is a comical, roly-poly eccentric:
“How did you know this was Charles Wallace’s house?” Meg asked.
“By the smell.” Mrs. Whatsit untied a blue-and-green paisley scarf, a red-and-yellow flowered print, a gold Liberty print, a red-and-black bandanna. Under all this, a sparse quantity of grayish hair was tied in a small but tidy knot on top of her head.
Bespectacled Mrs. Who speaks in quotations (because she “finds it so difficult to verbalize.”):
The plump little woman beamed at him. “Why, Charlsie, my pet! Le coeur a ses raisons que la raison ne connait point. Fench. Pascal. The heart has its reasons, whereof reason knows nothing.”
And Mrs. Which, the oldest, wisest and most mysterious of the three, who looks like a Halloween witch (when she bothers to materialize), and speaks in a “sharp, strange voice:”
There was a faint gust of wind, the leaves shivered in it, the patterns of moonlight shifted, and in a circle of silver something shimmered, quivered, and the voice said:
“I ddo nott thinkk I will materrialize commpletely. I ffindd itt verry ttirinngg, andd wee hhave mmuch ttoo ddoo.”
In my opinion, these are some of the best and most memorable characters literature has to offer. I sincerely hope the Disney movie does them justice!

Passing The Frozen Nebula With A Side Of Pretzels
I watched Duckery attach the prep-rope to the O-ring of his astrosuit, and feed the line of oxygen directly through to his helmet. A kind of preventative measure, but really all it would take would be any miscalculation of pressure levels to leave Duckery dead with little effort. He paced a minute, and calibrated some settings on his armpadd, then looked up towards me. The frontscreen of his helmet activated, the dim opaque surface coming to life like a plasma television being switched on for the first time. The inner cameras of the helmet worked fine, relaying his visage, and a mischevious grin that carried a mission. Duckery had spent a long time talking up his experiments, his dalliances with physics.
“I’m telling you. It’s the only way. It’s... just perfect.” He said, his blue eyes beaming with passion and sincerity. A gift of knowledge he dared to share. A craft rarely applied in the multitude of intersteller exploration.
Duckery extended his hand out to me, and I gave him the duct tape. He nodded curtly, picked up the case, and stepped behind the blast doors of the airlock.
“Are you sure about this?” I yelled through the window futilely. Duckery motioned to my commlink, which I had forgotten to sync the last time I charged it, so I manually opened Duckery’s channel.
“Alright so, the tether holds for about a solid 15 seconds, but if my calculations are correct, we only need 6 seconds, so it’s almost like it’s not even a risk when you think about it...” Duckery, re-ran a simulation on his armpadd.
“Well, maybe six and a half. Seven. Seven tops! Tops!”
I nodded and prepped the airlock to disengage. Overrode the safety feature to keep the doors open for longer than 3 seconds. Double checked the tether with the securicams. Everything seemed okay, it was just Duckery’s will now.
“You’re not afraid?” I asked.
“Nah. Done this myself a million times. Worth it every time!”
Duckery took the case and began furiously duct taping it to himself.
“Can’t we just tape it to the interior hold itself? Why do you have to physically hold onto it?”
“Unreliable! Lost too many that way! This way, if y’all lose me, you’ll at least have a real reason to turn around and come get me!” Duckery laughed, finished taping, and gave the thumbs up.
I hesitate, then I hit the airlock switch. The porthole becomes filled with the bright neon blue light of the Zhulong-Theta “Frost” nebula. It really was like seeing a massive, floating, glowing space cube of ice, just like so many of the previous Taikonauts said before us.
“Aaaand Now!” Duckery’s voice chirped.
I pressed the recall on the tether line. Seven seconds now. Crap. We forgot to account for the tether reelback. Nine seconds. Ten. Eleven. Twelve. Thirteen. Fourteen. Fourteen and a half...
Duckery slams into the interior hold, his back smooshed up against the porthole. The neon snuffs itself out and the entire deck goes black. I hit the airlock button frantically, and immediately grab the first aid kit we prepped in case anything went wrong. The airlock re-pressurizes after an agonizing two minutes, bringing all the lights back with it. When the doors finally opened, Duckery’s suit was still covered in frost.
“WOOZY SHIT! WOW!” Duckery gesticulated wildly and ripped at the tape securing his arms to the case.
After a few moments and with some assistance, we managed to separate him from the case, and set it down gently on the floor. Too frozen to touch barehanded. Duckery de-attached his helmet, and tore the case open, pulling out a perfectly frosty, perfectly ice cold, perfectly chilled can of beer. He double checked the gravity settings on the ship, and cracked open the can, letting that beautiful noise of foam and carbonation escape into the air.
Kr-psshhhhhh!
“I’m telling you Huang, there’s just no other thing like a perfectly chilled beer from the airlock. Especially one from a frost nebula.” Duckery laughed.
I drank.

Start with Cosmos if you haven’t already, the old one with Carl Sagan, and its handy dandy companion book
(TBH just grab a bunch of Sagan)
Then there’s Stephan Wolfram’s A New Kind of Science, which isn’t strictly about space but covers principles that definitely apply to space and is just very cool.
(Be warned, she thicc but it’s mostly diagrams)
Universe by Nicolas Cheethman
Some more Sagan—Pale Blue Dot
Man In Space (edited by H.J.P. Arnold) may not be available anymore but it’s a great coffee table book with lots of pictures
From the Earth the Moon
Moon
And in a similar vein with fiction that does good science: Intersteller, The Martian, and 2010
2010 is the sequel to 2001 a Space Odessy and does make more sense if you’ve seen 2001, but 2010 is much more space-y than 2001
Hope this helps!
Does anyone know any good books/movies/articles about space?

Photo
This is the last piece I currently have in my new series Intergalactic. It's called "It's Full of Stars" (it's a reference to the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey). ⠀ .⠀ This started as a pour painting with tons of little subtle texture. The little bumps were almost invisible so I painted white, yellow, blue & red dots on them forming the stars. The areas that don't have stars, don't have any texture. I added in a simple moon / planet and some sparkling stars just to punctuate the space theme (and because there was kind of an empty spot where the planet is).⠀ .⠀ Some of the blue paints are metallic but it's subtle and not something that I can really show off in a photo. The whole painting was coated with 5 coats of high gloss varnish so if you feel like touching the little bumps (and you will), you can #petmyart all you want! Just clean it with a slightly damn cloth periodically to remove the oils from your petting sessions. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #deepspace #astronomy #astronomyart #space #spaceart #spacepainting #whiterosesart #blue #moon #stars #nightsky #intergalactic #intersteller #flowpainting #fluidart #acrylicpour #pourpainting #abstractpainting (at Fairfax, Virginia)
