BL: Romancing in a Bubble?
As always, please let me know if you have suggestions, critiques, comments or corrections.
I will only be discussing BL broadly (here I use BL as an umbrella term) and not just live action. I don’t want to club together BL and GL since in spite of their shared roots they are very different in their genre conventions, target demographics, and history. Also, I am not very familiar with it.

I consider BL a genre in itself – practically well as the way Masala is a cinema genre.
Please check the content/trigger warnings before diving into the works I have mentioned below. Feel free to message or ask.
BL / romance
I don’t think BL is romance or even a sub-genre of romance. A lot of BL is romance. Many more of them have at least a romantic side to them. There is enough overlap between those genres to give the impression that BL is romance. (I remember the discussion Killing Stalking had prompted.)
But there are plenty of BL devoid of romance. Like One Room Angel, Social Reform Season, and The Orc Bride. Similarly, BL is not exactly a porn sub-genre even though there are plenty of ero-BL.
Also, there are plenty of BL where romance takes backseat such as The Night Beyond the Tricornered Window, Blue Morning, Brother, Lawless Gangster and Thousand Autumns.
BL / queer
Queer – Can I call it a genre the way I call BL a genre? Even if one were to ignore queer as method in academia, it is still so complex.
Let me quote Taiwanese tongzhi (queer) author Chiang-Sheng Kuo:
[W]hat exactly is queer literature? Is it queer literature if queer people like to read it, or is it only queer literature if there are queer characters in the books? Or is it an appendage of the queer movement? If a queer author writes a book without queer characters, does that represent a certain aspect of queer culture?

I think the problem persist even when I think of queer as a label.
Then there is the issue with conception of “queerness” itself. Like, in a way it is a limiting term. Is it fair to call normative or customary male-male erotic practices such as masti and Launda Naach, “queer” just because that’s how it is perceived elsewhere now?
To quote what Kaustav Bakshi wrote in Writing the LGBTIHQ+ movement in Bangla:
In the last decade, the question of decolonizing queer epistemologies was being raised periodically, whereby queer politics, despite having a shared agenda of toppling heteronormativity, and queer culture, albeit having a shared aesthetics, became more and more regionalist – not in a negative sense – but, with implications of difference, which can be interpreted and understood only when one subjectively experiences the ‘region’ with respect to gender, class, caste, ethnicity, physical and intellectual ability, access to education, metropolitan cultures, and most importantly, the internet.
[T]he attraction towards the launda is not understood as ‘queer’ – non-normative or out of the ordinary – but, as an integral part of sexual life, which is not always compulsively alert to the heterosexual-homosexual binary.
Imo, decolonizing queer epistemologies comes in handy when discussing BL since there are plenty of BL dealing with:
Historical BL set in eras and locations that had customary male-male sexualities and practices.
BL with special settings, like omegaverse, with different (if any) idea of queerness.
BL / other queer content
Just as Japan has gei-comi, and other manga like Shoujo Manga Artist Minamoto-San Comes Out, and Kieta Hatsukoi (shoujo), What Did You Eat Yesterday and My Brother's Husband (seinen) beside BL manga, different countries offer diversity in queer content with noticeable overlap. But clubbing them together would not be easy. Moreover, this diversity is as much cross-sectional as it is temporal (tanbi, JUNE, shonen ai, yaoi, BL in Japan).
BL the main difference between BL and other queer genres is BL’s focus on moe (affect). Anyway, BL predates LGBTQ+ acronym. It predates de-pathologization of homosexuality in many BL creating regions. Fu-people (BL fans) were creating BL before mainstream media started representing queer people in media. Fu-people battled state and its censors everywhere along with queer people. Live action BL is commercialized and we get mostly feel-good content. But that is capitalism (and the State) reaping the dividends of decades of fu-people’s labor of love.
I wonder if it is apt to consider BL the way western queer shows (such Verbotene Liebe, Queer as Folks, Os Nossos Dias and SKAM) as benchmark when discussing BL? Won’t it be better to evaluate consider BL in relation to local non-BL queer content in BL producing countries? But then, there are BL inspired by western queer culture such as Partners by Tamaki Yura.
Here are three gei-comi that I recommend for BL audience, through which they can get an insight into non-BL queer manga from Japan (created with androphilic men as target audience) :

Here is my BL versus gei-comi list which I think highlights their differences and similarities (I have included only Gengoroh Tagame’s works since they are probably the easiest to access/buy/borrow):

There is lot of overlap between BL and gei-comi. Gengoroh Tagame first published in JUNE (a magazine that contributed to BL we know now). There are magazines and anthologies (Nikutaiha BL) that offer crossover between different streams of queer content.
Similarly, there are danmei (Chinese BL) novel written by queer men such as the autobiographical works: Six Records of a Floating Life and Waiting Until 35 Years Old by NanKang BaiQi and Bei Cheng Tian Jie (北城天街) by FeiTian YeXiang.
BL / Queerness - exploration and conflict
Here are some live action BL (I’m not including some of the more famous ones like TharnType and Wedding Plan) where plot is rooted in character’s queerness and its exploration or implications:
Lan Yu – first danmei to get live action adaptation. The central conflict is rooted in the queerness of its characters, particularly Chen HanDong.
A Round Trip to Love and Irresistible Love – based on danmei by Lan Lin. These are part of a shared universe. The former has both ‘coming out’ (Cheng Yichen) and ‘leaving home’ (Lu Feng). In the latter, all the conflict is rooted in compulsory heterosexuality and we get the perspective of not only an amphiphilic (bisexual) man (Xie Yan) but also an amphiphilic woman (Xia Jun) of the same social class.

I don’t keep track of these things usually, so this is based off memory.
In Japan, most BL has dealt with the struggles of being queer in a largely heterosexist society since the days of tanbi and shonen-ai (such as Zankoku Na Kami Ga Shihai Suru by Hagio Moto). JUNE gained notoriety for focusing on it and yaoi boom was movement away from that. Then yaoi gained notoriety for existing in a bubble. When BL started to treat heterosexism in society as a part of the narrative, it garnered praise for being ‘transformative’.
BL has managed to carry within it different modes of identity and queerness.
Take Okane ga Nai (No Money) by Hitoyo Shinozaki and Toru Kousaka for example.
It is often held up as the epitome of all that is wrong with BL (or yaoi as anglophone fandom calls it). What’s less talked about is the main character, Ayase Yukiya’s queer angst and his exploration of identity that spans several volumes of the manga series. Kano on the other hand doesn’t struggle with his identity at all since his attraction to Ayase is driven by a very strong, initially unreciprocated emotional connection dependency (formed when his father died and he was at his lowest). For him, sexuality is merely a form of expression of his attraction for Ayase. Therefore, it does not inform his identity in anyway.
Within cannon, Someya and Honda’s pairing offer contrast to Ayase and Kano’s pairing. In a way, Kano and Someya have post-queer and pre-queer identities, respectively. Someya is a self-actualized person who mentors other queer characters (club staff, Ayase, Honda, Kano). There is a lot of give and take that happens between Ayase and all the queer people he meets at Someya’s club. Ayase's and Honda’s struggles with identity and sexuality are juxtaposed with Kano's and Someya's self-assured disposition.
That is also why I don’t think I Told Sunset About You stands out much. It can easily fit into the BL fold because there are plenty of BL that approached the same theme as I Told Sunset About You in a similar fashion (including these live action BL: His - Koisuru Tsumori Nante Nakatta, Life: Senjou no Bokura and The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese).
I recommend the danmei novel Sissy by Shui QianCheng, the author of the works Beloved Enemy, My Stand-In and Meet You at the Blossom are based on, for a more detailed exploration of heterosexism, including femmephobia and homophobia.
Sissy, Beloved Enemy and Professional Body Double (the novel My Stand-in is based on) are all part of 188 group (a shared universe of novels).
There are plenty of other BL from other region that are focus on themes such as heterosexism and compulsory heterosexuality. Here is such a one-shot: Romantic by Motoni Modoru (part of the anthology Tanbishugi).
BL / terms
I like BL and associated terms like danmei because of the culture and the history associated with those terms. Tanbi and danmei are different readings of same characters 耽美 but they represent very different things. Shonen-ai literally translate to boy(s) love but that term (or BRM (boys’ romantic manga) as Emiko Nozawa puts it) carries within it so much history and specific artistic styles and sensibilities. Waai is derived from yaoi/yuri but there are fu-cultural processes, very different from that of yaoi creation, behind the production of Y-novels. I learned a lot from exploring these words alone.

The snow gracefully floated down from the sky, creating a serene and otherworldly scene, while the colossal wall of ice dominated the horizon with its sheer magnitude. A blanket of grey clouds stretched endlessly overhead, casting a sombre atmosphere over the vast expanse of land.
As Princess Y/n made her way through the ancient corridors of Castle Black, her elegant black gown swept the ground, gathering traces of mud along its hem. Accompanied by Lord Cregan Stark, who was clad in rugged leathers and winter furs, she ascended a creaky wooden lift, her presence commanding attention and respect amidst the stoic members of the Night's Watch.
“Are we sure this is safe?” Y/n asked,
“Fear not my princess, the men of the Night’s Watch maintain all their equipment well. No harm will come to you,” Cregan nodded,
As the lift creaked and groaned, it gradually started to ascend. The wooden structure swayed gently, causing the lanterns to emit soft squeaks as they swung back and forth. As the lift continued its ascent, the imposing silhouette of the castle gradually receded from view, giving way to the expansive and undulating landscapes of the northern realm stretching out in all directions.
Y/n slightly trembled tightening her grip on his arm,
“One wouldn’t think a dragon rider would be afraid of such heights?” he teased her,
“No, it is not the height that bothers me.” she answered, “More the lack of control I suppose,”
“I understand, it can be hard to relinquish such things.” He said, “Come,” He told her As the elevator reached the top, he gently guided her through the winding passages that were meticulously carved into the massive wall. They passed by numerous guards stationed along the way until they finally arrived at an outpost overlooking the expansive landscape beyond the wall.
“It is beautiful… in a terrifying sort of way,” she says,
“Winter is coming My princess, and we must stand ready,” he told her,
She scoffed, “Coming? Surely it is here, no? Else tell me, what is this that falls from the sky and shivers me so?”
“This is but a late summer snow, in the depths of winter it will cover all you see. And the feelings of the warm sun will fade to distant memory.”
“My father brought King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne to see the wall, his grace stood this very outlook and watched as their dragons the greatest power in the world, refused to cross it.” he explained,
“It pleases me to know.” She nodded, “Our families share such history, that our ancestors over a century ago treated in this very place, The Conquer and the king in the north.”
He chuckled, “You my princess, at least had the grace and the mercy not to threaten me with your dragon,”
“True.” She smiled, “I wonder…”
“Of what?”
“From the word and histories I have read, The great Torren Stark would rather have died than bent the knee. Much less to the conquer unless he truly believed in unity for the kingdoms.”
“I fear you right My princess,”
“We know why I am here, we both know I have come because that unity… now is under threat.” she explained, “The realm is at risk of tearing itself apart like a dog chewing off its own tail.” she said, “If the men of this kingdom do not remember the oaths sworn before my grandfather King Viserys and his rightful heir my mother Queen Rhaynera,”
“I assure you, Starks do not forget our oaths my princess, Nor do any house under me. There are many in westeros who support your queen… quietly,”
“Quiet support is the same as silence, my lord Stark.”
“You must understand my princess, I like many others have a gaze torn. Between north and south, the matter of the crown and throne is a matter to you and your family I do not deny, but our matters are just as crucial, during winter the oath I owe to the wall and my people is even more than any I owe to kings landing.”
“War is coming my lord,” she said the shiver obvious in her voice,
“That it is.” He nodded, He gracefully removed his fur-lined cloak and gently draped it over her shoulders, ensuring that she was enveloped in its warmth and softness. “We must be united as one… to hold the claim of your mother together.”
Her eyes met his with playful suspicion, “Why do I feel the support of your Northmen comes with a cost beyond the oaths once sworn?”
“Our oaths are held dear, but what you ask would require our houses to have a strong union beyond just oaths.” He explained, “My princess?”
“Is this a proposal my lord?”
“It is. My princess.” He nodded, a gentle smile forming on his lips as he softly took her hand in his, delicately lifting it to his lips and pressing a tender kiss against her cold, delicate skin. The warmth of his breath mingled with the chill of her touch, creating a moment of tender connection between them.
“… for the sake of my mother's cause, and the kingdom. I must agree.” she softly smiled trying to hide her blush,
“Come we will discuss matters in more detail besides the fire.” He told her, “Before you freeze my princess.” he cooed tugging her away from the outlook.

I just finished watching through season 3 of the mdzs donghua fully and why do people praise cql for the romantic undertones when the donghua exists and did it much better
Hi there!
I am going to be completely honest here and say it's because a lot of them initially came from American live action media fandoms from 2005-2016 that very much thrived on mean spirited queer content baiting that the fans could transform.
Ironically I came across something from twitter today saying "fanfiction is taking back wonderful characters and worlds from problematic authors", and it made me sad. Because this is how the scape of American media is still like, the "subtext" of not really queer content is put on a pedestal because "I" can make what doesn't exist, better. It can be argued censorship was pushed to a certain limit, but it wasn't due to the writers and producer of CQL in the long run, it only is the bare shadow of the novel due to backlash and the film crew needing to resort to reshooting and edits of what had been a straight washing of the actual gay main characters.
The first season of the donghua, which preceded CQL by a whole year, can be debatably said to be able to get away with more risqué content due to the medium of animation, and tencent animation productions are very notorious with this and had the grace of being an old IP before the massive wave of mainland censorship restrictions regarding overly sexual content.
But the sticking point for me personally, is that even with censors the staff of the donghua hadn't tried to change the core relationship between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji being the most important part of the others life as what the interviews for CQL's head scriptwriter tried to do when she said "it had to be changed to heavy familial ties" and thus the expansion of the Jiangs. It's morbidly word for word the same as a lot of American comi-con panels back in the day that the same fans hated from American productions.
It's taking the same crumbs from 15 years ago and trying to call it more. When the donghua did what CQL didn't by at least keeping Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian together and the others most important and not needing to explicitly say this or animate it by book text. As well as somehow needing to still say that the subtext is more romantic than the overt. Personally, I am tired of that when I have something in a televised form of my favorite romance that doesn't relegate them to the zone of platonic only zhiji who can never be together, and shows them on screen going to a home they made that they can go to when they want together always, and what others say doesn't matter.
I'm tired of taboo love and I think that the donghua understood the "to hell with that" message MXTX constantly made with each of her romances regarding that and what polite society would think about my love.

COMI A MULHER DO VIZINHO CORNO

Olá, estou aqui mais uma vez para contar mais uma de minhas aventuras, sou “Ricardo” Minha vizinha na casa a frente a direita da minha é uma pretinha gostosa e baixinha, nunca usa roupas muito chamativas , más sempre é visível seu corpão, sempre que saio com o carro e a vejo faço questão de observá-la o máximo possível.
Como um safado assumido até forço contato visual a fim de gerar tensão, e ela nunca fugiu a um olho no olho , mesmo nunca passando disso, seu esposo pouco mais velho que ela sempre fez questão de me cumprimentar.
Certo dia pela manhã enquanto eu lavava a porta da minha casa ele chegou e após me cumprimentar me contou sobre um problema em uma calha de sua casa que sempre transbordava nas últimas chuvas.
Me dispus a olhar para ele e quem sabe reparar… entramos pelo quintal da casa dele nos dirigindo ao fundo da casa , ao passar pela janela da cozinha de blindex a vi , regata branca e short de moletom cinza , lisa….
Ele pegou uma escada e eu subi em direção a tal calha… pedi a ele um saco plástico pois havia muita sujeira e para a minha surpresa ela que trouxe o saco más dessa vez com uma toalha em seu ombro, uma encarada no fundo dos meus olhos deu quando respondeu ao meu agradecimento.
Subi e minuciosamente limpei toda a sujeira de folhas e matos que provavelmente pássaros levaram, ao descer não ouvi barulho algum e tentei falar com ele dá quantidade de lixo que havia …
Ela me respondeu que ele havia ido tomar banho e quando me virei em direção a ela , estava de biquini, bronzeando, com a toalha cobrindo o rosto… tremi na hora… como não uso cueca e estava de bermuda tactel… foi difícil me concentrar para meu pau não endurecer…
Um biquini vermelho em uma pele negra brilhando com o óleo é sacanagem, seu pacotinho levemente tampado pelo biquini tão pequeno me enchia a boca d'água, meus sentidos estavam aflorados, senti a adrenalina e como meu corpo pulsava apenas a observando.
O foda de ser viciado em sexo é que a gente perde a noção da hora de parar e não seguir em diante… Parei de pé ao seu lado e mapeei todo seu compacto corpo , seus pelinhos brilhando no sol me chamavam a se esfregar nela… notando minha presença destampada um dos olhos e sorriu…
- “Pode olhar… só não fica de pau duro “
Tampado pelo saco de lixo meu pau já estava meia bomba , e pulsou quando ela disse…
Ela se sentou , pegou o vidro de óleo e me pediu para passar nas costas dela , e foi aí que ouvi seu marido de dentro da casa perguntar se havia dado certo limpar mesmo sem nos ver , corri e desci a escada lhe dizendo que sim e que havia tirado um saco cheio de lixo.
Ele me agradeceu e me ofereceu café e eu aceitei, quando entramos a cozinha ela veio já vestida com o short de moletom dessa vez mais alto no corpo e sua regata branca sem sutiã estava levemente molhada com o óleo bronzeador… eu e ele apenas a observamos.
Quando ela bebeu água a toalha caiu de seus ombros, revelando seus mamilos rígidos, ela agachou de pernas abertas de frente para nós e seu short rachou sua xota e ao se virar um pouco de lado ainda agachada permitiu que víssemos os beicinhos de sua bucetinha pretinha toda depilada , na hora meu pau endureceu de doer…
Ele que também viu tudo, disse que buscaria seu celular no quarto que havia esquecido e foi correndo… ela ainda agachada olhou pra mim e riu vendo que eu devorava sua buceta com os olhos…
- “vai babar moço “ Ela me disse com a cara lerda
Larguei o freio e olhando em seus olhos respondi que já estava e ela fez cara de quem não me entendeu… Comi vi que ela queria provocar fiz questão de como sempre dobrar a proposta… puxei minha bermuda para baixo a revelando minha pica pulsando, escorrendo sua lubrificação… ela arregalou os olhos… provavelmente nunca havia visto 22 centímetros pulsando e escorrendo em sua frente kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk
Peguei na base e o balançava olhando para ele enquanto fazia “aaaaaaaaaaaaaa” expirando ar ….
Ela o media todo… e após algumas balançandas o guardei novamente fingindo que não a via e o corno desceu.
Queria me mostrar algumas fotos de um trabalho em andamento que ele havia tirado… Más, Sem querer me mostrou rapidamente uma foto que tirou dela de quatro de lingerie sobre a mesma mesa da cozinha que estávamos…
Ele passou para a próxima foto e eu fingi que não havia visto nada , mesmo já entendendo a intenção dos dois… após comentar sobre o trabalho passou pra uma outra foto , ela de quatro na cama com uma rola na entrada da buceta e ele de pé tirou a foto…
Gosta ?? Me perguntou ele
Ela se levantou e apoiou a lateral do quadril na mesa nos observando…

Más de uma forma intensa , imendei os deixando confusos propositalmente…
- Vem mamar… disse a olhando sério enquanto saquei a rola novamente
- Puta merda , disse ele ao ver meu e pau rindo
A piranha já veio se ajoelhando e abrindo a boca
- Não gosto que toque nele , disse a ela enquanto lambia a cabeça, e ela apenas afirmou de boca cheia largando a sua base … molhava ele de cima a baixo… chupava sua baba… lambia todo… colocava a cabeça na boca.
Dei um tapa na cara dela e mandei engolir todo , ela deu um gemidinho e tentou … ele se sentou em uma cadeira ao lado e eu decidi provocá-los…
- Já contou pra ele que esse não é o maior que já chupou cadela ?!?!?Que já engoliu um mais grosso que esse ??? Já contou pra ele como sua buceta ficou após te fuder ???
Ele revirava os olhos kkkkkkkk e ela me respondeu olhando para ele
- Como que conta que conheci você virgem… e riu voltando a me mamar…
A levantei e a debrucei na mesa , sua bunda grande brilhando de óleo mau revelava seu pacotinho… arregaceii sua bunda com as mãos e chupando com força suguei dos seu pequenos lábio até seu cuzinho que se contraiu na hora revelando um gemido, sua pernas grossas tremiam… chupei ela intercalando grelinho, penetrando sua buceta com a língua, lambendo seu cuzinho até perceber que iria gozar… passei a chupar esfregando toda a minha cara em sua buceta e rabo
- Animal , disse ela gemendo…
Suguei seu grelo, segurei com os dentes e ainda sugando o lambia fazendo movimentos circulares… ela tremeu-se toda e gozou , da buceta escorrer aquela porra branca e grossa… o ambiente perfeito pra enfiar a pica…
Me levantei e como se precisasse passei cuspe na cabeça do meu pau e enquanto o massageava apertava seus peitinhos… ela se virou um pouco para vê-lo entrar…
- Quer ver ele entrar todo em você capelinha safada ??? Sussurrei
- Quero , safado… respondeu ela…
Pincelei sua buceta e seu cuzinho algumas vezes e o empurrei na bucetinha sem que ela esperasse… contraiu de forma tão intensa que colocou a perna direita sobre a mesa…
- Olha corninho… olha o tamanho dessa rola na sua buceta… vai arrombar minha bucetinha…

There was a sense of pride running through your veins. Seeing the band that you’d known and supported for years sweep the BRIT awards, winning all of their nominated categories. You’d been working as office support at Dirty Hit since their first album was released, you’d been with them through just about everything, every gig you helped organise, all the singles you did the logistics on, and you’d become a good friend of all of them.
There was one, though, a certain bassist that you were closest to. You and Ross had always had a sort of special relationship. There was rarely a conversation between the two of you that didn’t involve at least a base level of simple flirting; you asking him if all the things they say about bassist are true, him teasing by saying you should find out for yourself. It’d never gone all that far though, there was a boundary there that neither of you were willing to cross. And you thought that’s just how it’d be forever.
The pub Dirty Hit had rented out for the afterparty spared no expense, you made sure of that. Music was pumping, there were dozens of fluorescents illuminating the space, and the drinks were flowing–very much.
Of course, the band of the hour was everyone’s attention–you’d gotten in a quick ‘congratulations’ before they were totally smothered by the countless guests who wanted to do the same thing. Even being just on the outside of it all, it was suffocating to watch the four of them bounce around the room, never being left alone.
You needed some air, so slinking towards the front door to take a break outside the front of the booming club–as best you could with the amount of shots you’d taken. The general opinion of you was neutral, and you liked it that way, you didn’t have to worry.
In your peripheral, you saw a figure stand next to you, a veil of cigarette smoke around them. You turned your head as was met with the sight of your favourite bassist. He looked exceptionally dashing tonight with his suit and bow tie–you told him he looked like a sexy Fred Astaire, which he blushed and laughed at.

A gust of wind blew through the street, chilling you to the bone. Ross noticed your slight shivering, and he put an arm around you, trying to give you as much warmth as possible, even with his jacket on, the cold was coming through. Ross chuckled at the sound of your teeth chattering. Something with the chill made you giggly, with the sudden inability to speak, the best you could do was laugh with him.
Suddenly he had a hand on your chin, lightly directing you to face him. He slightly raised his eyebrows, asking your permission. Instead of answering, you just went for it.

"Shinjo Mayu: Exploitation of Mangakas by Publishers"
I didn't know what to start this blog with until yesterday, I woke up and read a tremendous article of manga artist Shinjo Mayu. I couldn't resist talking about this queen who has been shaking up the Japanese publishing world recently, and I would like to share her experience and thoughts.
First, let's get to know Shinjo Mayu and how she has reached this point.
Shinjo Mayu (新條 まゆ) is a Japanese manga artist who was born in Nagasaki Prefecture in 1973. She graduated from Yukokan High School and made her debut in Shogakukan's Sho-Comi magazine in the special edition released on February 14, 1994, with "あなたの色に染まりたい." Her success skyrocketed with "Kaikan Phrase" (1996-2000), published in the same magazine as her debut, which was also adapted into an anime between 1999-2000, totaling 44 episodes.
On May 23, 2007, Shinjo Mayu announced on her blog that she would be leaving the Shogakukan publishing company to become an independent artist. Without giving many details, she mentioned that she planned to experiment with different things.
Nearly a year later, she opened up and stated that she left because the demands from her editors were too stressful and degrading. She even disclosed being threatened by an editor that her previous works would cease to be printed if she left. Seeking legal advice, fortunately, her works continued to be printed. She has expressed that many writers feel dissatisfaction working at Shogakukan due to excessive pressure. Even her editor, when she began creating manga, told her that "she was a manga creator akin to a worm who would never become a serialized manga creator no matter how hard she tried." She revealed that as a mangaka at Shogakukan, she had drawn up to 120 pages a month with an average of 3 hours of sleep per day.
During this time, she has become a highly versatile manga artist, creating works spanning various genres such as shojo, shonen, seinen, and BL. Additionally, she oversees a comprehensive housing production called Maison de Cocon. In 2021, she started a new series titled "Nijiiro no Ryuu wa Megami wo Daku" which is available on various manga applications.
Many authors, including Shinjo Mayu, feel distressed by the sudden passing of mangaka Ashihara Hinako. Even today, her case is still being discussed in the news and on social media. I will make a separate post about this topic, but in summary, Ashihara Hinako posted on January 26th on her blog a critique of Nippon TV because the television adaptation of her manga "Sexy Tanaka-san" was not faithful to her original work. She emphasized that she had repeatedly told Shogakukan to urge them to take action, but without success. She later deleted the post and apologized. However, on January 29th, her lifeless body was found in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, under suspicion of suicide.
Since then, Shinjo Mayu has expressed that not a day goes by without her remembering Ashihara Hinako and what led to her tragic end. Through social media, she denounces the mistreatment that manga artists receive, specifically at Shogakukan. She mentioned that when she wrote the blog about her departure from Shogakukan, an editor told her that there was a meeting where they said they "should control the writers so they don't make such big statements." On the other hand, at Shueisha, they said: "Before something like this happens, let's find out if the writers are dissatisfied."
Clearly, there are very good relationships between editors, manga artists, and publishers. However, as we have seen, there are also times when relationships are not so good. But it was yesterday, February 14th, where she exposed the Japanese publishing world by publishing an article on note.com titled "The Era is Beginning Where Manga Artists are Being Exploited by Publishers."
She has firmly expressed that she doesn't care about the consequences her statements may have on opportunities with other publishers, although she feels it is necessary to do so. From their manga, manga artists only receive 10% of the profit. In the past, working with an editor made things easier for manga artists as they only had to worry about drawing the manga. Editors, on the other hand, took on many responsibilities such as promotion and distribution. This is how they consolidated their role in the publishing industry. Therefore, the remaining 90% of the profit was considered "necessary expenses." However, now, in the digital era of e-books, manga delivery is simplified as the manga artist only has to create the manuscripts and send them. The functions between the editorial department and the publisher have been divided. Publishers are now responsible for granting distribution licenses to platforms and transmitting data. Overall, publishers have less work than before, so what is the true involvement of publishers in e-books? The royalty rate for manga artists in e-books is between 15% and 20%, but few people receive 20%. Previously, negotiating to increase e-book rights put distributors in a very vulnerable position due to threats from Shogakukan, as Shinjo makes clear: "without manga provided by the publisher, there was nothing to distribute." But the situation has now reversed, and it is the publishers who ask for works to be converted into e-books. Over time, more authors realized that publishers were charging too much in terms of e-book royalty rates. In this way, the publisher becomes an exploiting intermediary. Distribution companies don't charge as much because they aren't the authors; but publishers, who own the related author rights, receive significant rates without doing as much work.
Shinjo Mayu denounces that publishers are paying very low salaries to their staff and encourages manga artists to seek fair and equitable compensation for their work. She also urges publishers to recognize and adequately support those who contribute to the creative process.
Currently, she works at the distribution company "ナンバーナイン," which has an editorial department. Therefore, the company itself is responsible for sending data to applications, conducting advertising, negotiating, and managing the data transfer and management process on behalf of the mangaka. However, their editorial department is responsible for providing feedback on manga, creating data reports, and offering advice and guidance. Shinjo Mayu considers these companies to be modern and flexible, so it's a good idea to try negotiating manga and distribution fees. In fact, she says that one can be a manga artist without needing to go through a traditional publisher.
I wonder if publishers could be in danger in the future for not offering their workers the respect and rights they deserve. I love magazines, but Shogakukan is getting a terrible reputation for not taking care of its artists (and for quite some time). Some are even encouraging a boycott of the publisher.
"Who can truly say they are supporting manga artists when those who work the hardest are the ones receiving the least money?" - Shinjo Mayu.

Toto is in a pretty hard situation. Next year is way to early for Kimi to go to merc. He is fast and talented that is not a question but he is young and he makes mistakes. And thats fine. Thats what feeder series are for, to develop drivers. But he is not given enough time. Making mistakes in f2 is one thing, making them in merc very different. The social media reception after he finished p14 in his first race were quite brutal. That would be way worse in an f1 team. The drivers are also using social media, Im sure he saw the people making fun of him. That cant be helpful long term.
Toto finally noticed that overhypeing an 18yrs old before his f2 debut wasnt really a good idea.
Announcing him while he is p9 in the f2 championship would be a pretty wild move…

All he is talking about in this interview is how much he is learning. Which is good. But putting him on f1 testing while he is still learning f2 is an interesting choise. Its great that he is getting testing opportunities but they are really rushing him. And sure it worked out with max but he was one in a million.
Yes Toto doesnt want to lose an other Max level driver, but he could easily be the one to destroy Kimis carrier by rushing him so much.

Tbh, I half agree on Kimi but i think Toto is the biggest problem facing kimi.
While yes, Kimi is p9 in the championship, he is beating his teammate. Yes Ollie missed Saudi so you could argue he could have won or whatever but realistically, there hasn’t been a chasm between their results that would suggest Ollie would be ahead. Kimi is learning very fast for someone who didn’t have the experience of being in f3 at all. I don’t think it’s that crazy to consider giving him a seat.
BUT. Is Toto the TP he needs as a young driver with next to no experience? In my opinion, no. Apart from the fact that Toto doesn’t develop drivers, and is used to dropping them off at the Williams day care and picking them up when they’re ready, or just picking an already finished driver off the market, Toto makes no allowances for the antics that young drivers come with. Even in 2016 he made no allowances for Max, who wasn’t even HIS driver, to be “getting in the way”. He doesn’t like his drivers complaining or inventing. He doesn’t seem like a team principal who would have the understanding that yeah, a kid is going to end up in a first lap incident sometimes, he is going to fuck up qualifying. He is going to impede someone, and you are going to have to go to the stewards with him and fight for him, and not hang him out to dry when he does something a bit unorthodox. And I don’t think Toto is that guy.
Max was one in a million but he didn’t get there in his own, he had a Christian, Helmut, GP, and Jos, but largely Christian in a professional sense, fighting for him, letting him make his mistakes, and swallowing those fuck ups as part of the cost of putting a kid in a car. I don’t think Max would be the driver he is if he’d gone through Williams and Merc, I think he would have been encouraged to be more conservative and ultimately not developed in the same way. You would rather go over the limit and then come back, than never reach the limit.
I don’t see Kimi reaching his potential if he is under Toto from the beginning. And for that reason I don’t see Merc in 2025 being the best idea for him.
That being said, if Merc weren’t who Merc are, taking 2025 as basically live testing for him before the new regs come in is not a bad idea. If watching F2 this year has taught me one thing, it’s that those races will not adequately prepare you for driving in F1 in terms of speed, strategy, awareness, or a long calendar. A burner year to experience that where no one is expecting much from you in a midfield car is the best gift that could be given to Kimi. But coming from Merc, I don’t know how it will go for him.
As for the social media aspect, all you can hope is that Kimi has a good team around him and that he is consuming as little of it as possible. The way he always focuses on the learning says he is taking the right approach to it so far, but only time will tell. I do think there is a twisted positive in the amount of eyes on him, because most of these guys have no clue the amount of scrutiny they will get once they get to f1 and it’s a baptism of fire. As harsh as it sounds, Kimi being eased into it might not be the worst thing. Especially considering he is already associated with such a high profile team.

My Season 3 Diatribe
for @wowbright who gave me a platform that I really didn't need but took anyway. ;)
The thing about Glee was that it started with a woman being fake pregnant for thirteen episodes and then ended the season with a baby being born while Bohemian Rhapsody blared in the background. It was weird and crazy and insane and just edgy enough that it was being talked about but not too niche that it couldn't find an audience. It also hit in the sweet spot of the Obama years when, as a nation, we could get on board with being a little different and a little crazy.
Ryan Murphy is both a genius and insane at the same time. I'm not really fond of him, and I think his tendency for going big sometimes obscures the nuances of really good storytelling. But he knows how to make a loud statement. And Glee was that loud statement.
And then it got big. Too big. It got more money, an awards, and the national stage, and then all eyes were on it. And Ryan Murphy got tired because that's also Ryan Murphy - being distracted by American Horror Story where he could be abstract in the way his brain really wanted to go. And so, new writers were brought in, but having all eyes on it meant you had to dial it back, and the new writers didn't jive the same way, nor could they really juggle all of the new network notes, ballooning cast, mandates of the Glee project and responsibility for now having to be a 'role model' for all the new outsiders who were hanging on.
The show was once about being an awkward kid in the 80s. And then it was forced into becoming a mouthpiece for the changing times of the 2010s.
And that... doesn't work.
The funniest thing is way back when... after I had stopped watching the show for a while, Season 3 is what brought me back. I did think, for a moment in time, that I liked it better than Seasons 1 or 2. I can't exactly tell you why. But The First Time is when I fell in love, and maybe you feel connected to something when you fall in love with it that you can't really discribe.
And I hated Season 4. and I was listening to a podcast of the day (Those of you who remember Lima Heights Adjacent?) and the group of people were talking about how, with all of its faults, Season 4 was at least NOT Season 3. And I was confused because at the time - I much preferred Season 3. Because my favorite couple was at least a couple back then -- because the cast was people I liked. Because the episodes were easy to digest and the structure of it, while being bland and predictable, fit into a nice, uniform way of storytelling.
And then time moved on, and I left my twenties, and digested the entire story (the second half, with all of its faults, does not get the recognition it deserves -- despite it falling apart at all times) and got a lot better at critical analysis and media analysis and being open to the ideas of others and just... shake my head.
When you look at the whole, Season 3 isn't AS bad as I make it seem sometimes. There's a good chunk of it, right in the middle, that is... more watchable than what's at the beginning and end.
There is, however, a laundry list of reasons why it's not good -- from questionable story telling choices to dulling the edge of a more biting comedy to just not being able to service all the characters it has in a satisfactory way. They botched Santana's story, which had been set up nicely in season 2. They threw in guest stars and special episodes to throw off that they didn't really know what to do with the story other than praise Rachel Berry and get those kids winning nationals and graduated. They took Kurt and completely neutered him in a way that went against everything they had built him up to be in the first two seasons. And so on and so on and so on.
But I suppose most egregiously -- they played it safe and it was no longer interesting.
I don't fully understand why people love it so much. But I will say - part of the reason might be why I liked it at the time. There's a huge influx of newer fans always coming to the show. And like Klaine, Brittana (which has a following unlike it ever did when it aired) remains together and having the most screen time in Season 3. All the original characters are around, and the story structure, if nothing else, is secure and sound and plays out exactly as its supposed to. Rachel Berry gets the crown, Will gets the teacher of the year, and they all win nationals - hell, even Sue gets a baby. Cue the music and roll credits.
To each their own.
Season 4 comes next with its awkward new characters and its break ups and its wild ups and downs. And then season 5 with its grief and queer in a way that's not accessible but fuck it who cares and season 6 that just wants to go back to the beginning and end it all like the weird creation it was when it started. And as complicated as all of that is -- it's not as digestible as Season 3. I like the afterwards better. But I understand that some people won't. It has, after all, taken me years to get to this level of appreciation.
Who knows how people are going to look at it in ten, fifteen, fifty years. I'm sure, as streaming shows continue to go on and on and on and nothing dies any more, it'll take on different tones and different meanings.
Maybe this time around - those people just need that comfort.
I can't tell you.
But it won't ever be my favorite. And that's fine. As always, ymmv.

i was wondering if you’d be willing to talk about or list what cartoons/movies/comics/art influenced or inspired you/your style.
i’ve long been sick of people lumping other styles in with viv’s as if she’s the first to ever draw like that (as well as viv acting like she is.) and one day when i have the time i’d like to sit down and make an info-graphic of sorts explaining style influence and how it can overlap with other artists even with them never crossing paths.

That's fine!! I don't mind engaging when people ask my side of things, I just don't want to be a source for other people to post random things through, if that makes sense. I do try to be upfront about my experience and bring it up from time to time because there are constantly new victims, and I don't want anyone to feel alone or like they're the only person having a negative experience. I know that a lot of others are afraid to speak out, so I try to be a story that's open in case anyone else needs validation.
As for stylistic influence, The Nightmare Before Christmas was the earliest movie I remember watching and my grandma had to get it on VHS for me because I watched it like every week. I loved Tim Burton's claymation as well as his live action movies (Beetlejuice, Mars Attacks, Batman, etc.) My favourite American cartoons growing up were Batman the Animated Series (very big stylistic influence), The Grim Adventures, and Animaniacs. I grew up abroad, though, so I had a lot of other influences, Winx Club was extremely popular as well as Sailor Moon, so I picked up a lot of habits in my anatomy from those (I think automatically associating ice with villains is also something I picked up from that). But the very long legs compared to bodies is definitely a prevalent thing in media I liked, I even had these dolls (they were called Hi Glamm dolls if you want to look them up) who had legs twice the length of the rest of their bodies. Don Bluth movies were some of my favourites, especially All Dogs and Anastasia. I read a lot of comics my dad collected as well, in big whole-volume collections, and I remember being very fond of Asterix and Obelix, and Bill Maildin's comics about the military (which might not seem like a big one, but I took a lot of inspiration from his spot-blacking for when I do spot-black).
Other major influences concerned, some of my biggest when it came to making comics were other webcomics, specifically Warrior-U (Aisha Thani) and Lackadaisy (Tracy Butler), both of which have been around on the internet far longer than a certain someone who thinks she invented half the things in these comics. I did see her webcomic and followed webcomics from the circle of comics it was lumped in with (Our Personal Purgatory and Alice and the Nightmare, the latter of which is still ongoing and the former you can see the artist's new comic on Webtoons, it's called Death Sitter). Ironically, a friend linked me to her comic and said "it reminds me of your art so I think you'd like it". I wanted to like it, but she was so overly defensive of her "style" that people were "stealing" and so aggressive toward other issues that it pushed me away from it. She definitely didn't invent the very fluid, cartoony bodies thing with big eyes that everyone equates to her, that came long before with Aisha Thani and Puppetology. From what I've seen, Viv used to have a way more Disney-esque style until she became associated with Puppetology and Dollcreep, so if anyone deserves credit for "inventing" the "style", it's them.
I'm genuinely sad that Warrior-U is still gone, but I need to buy her other comics because her art is amazing. Funnily enough, recollecting this all is what prompted me to go look up her gumroad, and see that there are even more new comics to check out.
I don't mind posting this publicly, I'm very proud of my artistic journey and I'm incredibly happy to share due credit to all of my influences growing up. I'm trying not to make this too long, so hopefully this clears up enough, but if you have follow-up questions then feel free to ask.

VIZ Media Licenses the Magical Girl Dandelion Manga
VIZ Media has confirmed with Anime News Network that it has licensed the Magical Girl Dandelion manga, and will begin releasing it as a simulpub in early October 2024.
