India is likely to face a blistering summer after recording its hottest February since 1901, its weather department has said. Average maximum temperature was 29.5C in February, the highest since India started keeping proper weather records. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also forecast "enhanced probability" of heatwaves between March and May. Prolonged heat could affect wheat production and push up power demand. Last year, India was forced to ban wheat exports after unseasonably hot weather affected the crop, sending local prices soaring. India is the world's second biggest wheat producer. The unusually high temperatures had also triggered a spike in power demand last year, leading to outages in many states. This year too, demand for electricity has already reached near-record levels in recent weeks, Bloomberg reported. India saw a 55% rise in deaths due to extreme heat between 2000-2004 and 2017-2021, according to a study published last year in the medical journal, The Lancet.

What is IMD?

Minor intervertebral disorder, often abbreviated to MID, is a spinal condition characterised by a small ‘imbalance’ in a vertebra. This imbalance, although minor, can lead to significant and limiting pain. Imagine a stack of books: if one book is slightly askew, the whole stack can become unbalanced and cause tension. It's much the same with the vertebrae.

What causes it?

The exact causes of IMD are not always clearly identified, but several factors may contribute to it:

- Repetitive strain injury: Sudden movements, poor posture or poorly executed physical efforts can cause vertebral misalignment.

- Stress: Stress can lead to muscular tension that disturbs the balance of the spine.

- Postural disorders: Prolonged poor posture can encourage the onset of IMD.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of IMD vary and can affect different parts of the body, depending on which vertebra is affected. The most common symptoms are

- Pain: Often localised in the neck or lower back, but may radiate to the limbs.

- Stiffness: Difficulty performing certain movements.

- Numbness or tingling: In the limbs.

- Headaches: Sometimes associated with cervical DIM.

How is IMD diagnosed?

Diagnosing IMD can be tricky, as there is no specific test to confirm it. The doctor relies on :

- Clinical examination: Palpation of the spine, mobility tests, assessment of reflexes.

- Imaging tests: X-rays, scans or MRIs may be carried out to rule out other pathologies, but they do not always show IMD.

What are the treatments?

Treatment of IMD is mainly based on conservative approaches:

- Physiotherapy: To restore mobility to the spine and strengthen the muscles.

- Vertebral manipulation: Carried out by a health professional (osteopath, chiropractor) to put the vertebra back in place.

- Medication: Anti-inflammatories and painkillers to relieve pain.

- Rest: It is important to take it easy during the acute phases of pain.

How can IMD be prevented?

To prevent the onset of IMD, we recommend that you :

- Maintain good posture: Whether at work, at home or during sporting activities.

- Regular physical activity: To strengthen back muscles.

- Lifting correctly: To avoid putting excessive strain on the spine.

- Manage stress: Stress can encourage muscular tension and therefore spinal imbalance.

Odisha Prepares for Cyclonic Storm with 'Zero Casualty' Goal

As a cyclonic storm develops over the Bay of Bengal, the Odisha government is taking proactive measures to ensure safety, aiming for "zero casualties." The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that a low-pressure system is expected to form over the east-central Bay of Bengal and adjacent north Andaman Sea by Monday, likely intensifying into a depression by Tuesday and becoming a full cyclonic storm by Thursday, October 24.

Forecasts indicate wind speeds of 40-50 km/h along the Odisha coast on Wednesday, escalating to 90-110 km/h, with gusts potentially reaching 120 km/h on Thursday. While the precise path and intensity of the cyclone are still uncertain, the IMD has issued warnings for heavy to very heavy rainfall in coastal and nearby districts from October 23 to 25.

Districts such as Puri, Khurda, Ganjam, and Jagatsinghpur are expected to face the brunt of the rainfall. To prevent fishermen from venturing into the sea, the state government has advised local collectors to enforce this restriction until further notice.

In anticipation of possible flash floods, waterlogging, and landslides, the government has instructed district officials to identify vulnerable populations and relocate them to safer areas. Additionally, collectors are to assess the readiness of over 800 multi-purpose cyclone shelters and identify pregnant women who may need immediate medical attention.

Odisha’s Special Relief Commissioner D.K. Singh emphasized that the state is closely monitoring the situation and has implemented necessary precautions. Historical context underscores the importance of these preparations, as Odisha has faced devastating cyclones in October, including the super cyclone of 1999 that resulted in over 10,000 fatalities. Recent improvements in disaster management have helped reduce casualties during storms like Phailin in 2013 and Hudhud in 2014, though significant property damage remains a concern.

Heavy rain likely in Kerala till October 5

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that heavy rains are likely in Kerala till October 5.

The weather department also issued yellow alerts in nine districts of the state till October 1.

The IMD, in a statement on Sunday, also said that heavy rain ranging from 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is predicated in the coming days.
