#IF A BOOK IS THAT LONG THEY MAYBE SHOULD GET AN EDITOR
redbreastedbird · 2 days
Note
Do all authors have to blitz through writing in the way that you do once they have a series? I really want to be an author but that part terrifies me!
Two answers to this one!
The first version is no, absolutely not. I got myself into a complete mess with my schedule because the puzzle book took much longer to write than I thought I would. What was supposed to be six months to write the first draft became four, then three, then two. Ideally I’d take about five months to write a first draft, researching as I go. That’s a much easier schedule, and slightly more normal.
The second answer is: despite best efforts it often turns out that way. I love writing, but writing to publish is hard. If you’re traditionally published you should probably be thinking about publishing one book a year. You can maybe push it a bit if you write for adults, but if you write for kids or teens this is fairly non-negotiable, because your readership will grow up!
So imagine you do take that five months for the first draft. Your editor will take about a month to edit it, then send it back to you for a second draft revision stage that takes maybe 2 months. Then you go again, maybe 2 weeks for your editor to look at it and a month for you to edit. Then you’re on to the copyedit and proofread stages - and you need to leave 2 months minimum between the time you print the book and the time it appears in stores. You will notice here that this is pretty much exactly a year. So if anything goes wrong - if the book needs another draft, or if you get sick, or if you take a long holiday, you’re going to have to be working on the end of one book while you plan and start to write the next book. And then maybe you get an idea for another book that you want to sell to another publisher so you’re writing that too, during the editing process for your first book … you can see how the schedule can get crunched and how you might end up tearing your hair out and trying to write a book in two months.
It’s hard! It’s really hard!! It’s particularly hard if you’re neurodivergent, which most authors are. It’s also hard because a lot of authors don’t know the world of publishing well. I do, because I used to be an editor, so I’m able to push back on some things that other authors wouldn’t know to. Sometimes I can’t, obviously, hence this schedule, but …
All of this to say, I don’t want this to put you off. I think writing is a vocation, in that if you need to do it you really need to do it, and doing anything else just isn’t the same. But I think it’s worth being honest that it is a grind, and it’s wise to know that going in, so you can think about ways to take care of yourself through that. The one thing that I think is absolutely CRUCIAL to remember is that your brain is where you create from, and if you burn out your brain you won’t be able to write a single word.
Which is why I am taking a small break after MUA 3 to work on some other projects without the stress of a deadline!

said is NOT DEAD. our brains have seen it so much that when reading dialogue, it just glosses over it. if you don't want to detract from the dialogue, USE SAID. other words might ground the reader a little too much and lose a bit of immersion.
--this comes from my old tutor who now has a phd in literature
Said Is Not Dead
Of course not! "Said" should still be your go-to speech tag, the benefit being that it flows best. I find it nice to have a larger working vocabulary when it comes to expressing speech, though, and I think many writers would agree! It's one thing to use "said" because you know it's the best word choice and another to keep using it because you can think of no alternative.
Having said that:
". . . Don't tell me your character 'excaimed,' 'stated,' or 'replied.' When in doubt, just use 'said.' That's all. Maybe they 'answered.' They certainly did not 'retort.' You can use 'said' more often than you think . . . it's one of those words that takes a while before it starts sounding repetitive." -- Ariel Gore, How to Become a Famous Writer Before You're Dead
"The best form of dialogue attribution is 'said,' as in 'he said, she said, Bill said, Monica said." -- Stephen King, On Writing
"Mr. [Robert] Ludlum . . . hates the 'he said' locution and avoids it as much as possible. Characters in The Bourne Ultimatum seldom 'say' anything. Instead, they cry, interject, interrupt, muse, state, counter, conclude, mumble, whisper (Mr. Ludlum is great on whispers), intone, roar, exclaim, fume, explode, mutter. There is one especially unforgettable tautology: '"I repeat," repeated Alex.' The book may sell in the billions, but it's still junk." -- Newgate Callender, in The New York Times Book Review
"Editors and critics often refer to melodramatic dialogue tags as 'said bookisms.' They know that these phrases give our story an amateurish look. Your readers might not know what the darn things are called, but chances are that they'll notice them, too . . . In most cases, the word 'said' would work just fine, and using said bookisms detracts from the dialogue." -- Ann M. Marble, "'Stop Using Those Said Bookisms,' the Editor Shrieked."
"[Say is] just too simple and clear and straightforward for many people. Why say something when you can declare, assert, expostulate, whine, exclaim, groan, peal, breathe, cry, explain, or asseverate it? I'm all for variety and freshness of expression, but let's not go overboard." -- Patricia T. O'Conner, Woe Is I
"In journalism circles, said is a virtue--simple, precise, and unadorned--and alternatives to it are considered frilly and silly. You don't have to agree, but be aware that lots of editors hold this view. Choose your alternatives to said with great care." --June Casagrande, It Was the Best of Sentences, It Was the Worst of Sentences
"We're all in favor of choosing exactly the right verb for the action, but when you're writing speaker attributions the right verb is nearly always 'said.' The reason those well-intentioned attempts at variety don't work is that verbs other than 'said' tend to draw attention away from the dialogue." --Renni Browne and Dave King, Self-Editing for Fiction Writers

THIS FIC IS 18+ MINORS DNI!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Green eyes narrowed into slits as he watched you up at the bar. The man you were toying with was fucking you with his eyes and he wasn’t even being shameful about it. That megawatt smile of yours seemed permanently plastered on your face as you forced a laugh at something he was saying.
Jake knew what you were doing.
He knew the second you stepped out of your shared bedroom in that dress. The one that hugged your curves in all the right places and dipped just low enough to show off your cleavage without looking trashy.
You were pissed at him. He’d talked a little too excitedly about a new coworker. You didn’t know her actual name, just that her call sign was Aphrodite. It was the first time you’d ever felt concerned about the status of your relationship. Jake hadn’t even realized he’d been talking about her so excitedly. He was just happy that he wasn’t the only one stuck training the new aviators anymore. That someone else could help go over flight plans so he could spend more time with you. Not to mention she was a skilled and experienced aviator herself. Jake enjoyed sharing stories with her.
It wasn’t until you’d asked how work with Aphrodite had been that he realized something was wrong. It was the way you said her name. Like it was poison and you were trying to spit it out of your mouth. Jake knew you well enough to know what that meant. When he asked you about it you just deflected, chalked it up to you just being tired and moody. He didn’t buy it, but he was running late and he figured you would talk to him about it when you were ready.
That was one of the things you loved about Jake. He never pushed you to talk, he just offered you a lap to snuggle into and waited until you opened up. It was different this time. You’d sunk so deep into a level of insecurity you hadn’t felt since before Jake cockily walked into your life.
The way he’d talked about Aphrodite brought up memories from your previous relationships. Even if in all reality it wasn’t anything you should have been suspicious about.
Still, you’d sunk so deep as a defense mechanism you had surpassed the crying or arguing phase. You’d gone straight for the antagonizing phase. Wanting to see how far you could push him before he finally got pissed off enough.
Jake had never experienced you being this jealous before. He always thought you knew how much he loved you. Maybe he had taken that for granted. As far as he was concerned you’d hung the moon and the stars and there was no one better than you. He had no idea that there was the tiniest bit of insecurity in you. That some pretty, hotshot pilot would come along and he would find in them something he couldn’t find in you.
You weren’t a pilot. And sure, you were a military brat, but you worked for a book editor. Your job was boring. You didn’t save anyones life, you just proofread young adult fantasy novels and porn with plot books. What was exciting about that in comparison to a fighter pilot who was so pretty her call sign was the goddess of beauty?
What you didn’t know was earlier that week Jake had shown Aphrodite the ring he’d picked out. It was almost as beautiful as you are and when he saw it, he just knew it would look pretty on your hand. And the woman had gushed about it. Asking Jake where he’d gotten it because she was preparing to pop the question to her own long term girlfriend.
Right now he was wishing he’d already asked you. So that way the ring would shine right in the douchebag's eye.
His eyes never left you, even as the man who’d just bought you another drink led you out to the dancefloor. If Jake didn’t know any better he would have caused a scene. Hell, he came close until you finally met his gaze. The glint in your eyes reminded him that you were doing this on purpose. You wanted to get a rise out of him, but he wasn’t going to give you that satisfaction.
Jake would remind you at home why his body was the only one you should be pressed against in the middle of some pretentious club.
“You think you’re so slick, don’t you little one?” Jake’s voice was low as he pinned you against the wall in the entryway of your home.
A grin curved your lips and the mischievous glint in your eyes came back. “Whatever are you talking about? I was a perfectly good girl tonight.” A blatant lie if you’d ever heard one. Your actions tonight had gotten you in exactly the position you wanted to be in.
Jake didn’t say anything, instead he just hoisted you over his shoulder. A harsh smack landed on your cheek and had you yelping.
Once in your room he set you down and you were finally able to get a good look at his eyes. They were a much darker shade of green than normal. “On your knees.” It was an order and from his tone you knew not to disobey. Your knees hit the plush carpeting in your bedroom and his hand came down to caress your cheek. “You remember your safe word sweetheart?” His voice was sweeter, waiting for your nod of acknowledgement. “Good. Color?”
“Green.”
Jake’s face changed again. You could feel your pussy clenching around nothing at the idea of what all he might do to you. His belt was the first article of clothing to come off, but rather than discard it on the floor it was wrapped around your neck. Jake pulled tight enough to send the sensation straight to your core, but not so tight it was dangerous.
You let out a moan and your eyes rolled back just slightly. The blonde aviator felt himself grow harder at the sight. He loved having you like this and he planned on fucking you so hard all the came out of you was incoherent babbles. Jake was going to make a mess of the woman he loved.
His cock was straining against his jeans and he finally undid them, pushing them down just enough to release himself. “Open your mouth.” You did as you were told and watched as Jake pursed his lips to spit. The glob of saliva landing perfectly on your tongue. “Swallow.” Again you did as you were told and seeing the pride in his eyes as you listened had more arousal coating your thighs. “I’m going to fuck your throat little one, if you need to me to stop you tap my knee twice.” You nodded, trying to keep your excitement at bay. “Open up.”
No sooner had you opened your mouth was his cock sliding in, the head of him tapping the back of your throat. You felt your throat constrict at the intrusion and Jake groaned at the sensation. The sound went straight to your pussy. Fuck, everything Jake did went straight to your pussy. You were addicted to the man and the way he made you feel in every aspect of your relationship.
He gave you a minute to prepare, the hand that wasn’t holding onto the belt wound into your hair, gripping at the crown of your head to give him leverage. Then he was thrusting, skull fucking you in a way he’d only done a few times since you’d been together. When you’d been especially bratty like you’d been tonight.
“Su..ungh..uch a good girl.” He grunted and the praise had you moaning on his cock between gags. Each sound Jake drew out of you only had him fucking you harder. Tears were streaming down your face, the smokey shadow and mascara you had on streaking down your cheeks.
You could feel his cock twitch in your throat and you knew he was close. You were waiting to feel him cum down your throat, but it never came, instead he pulled his cock out, tapping you softly on the cheek.
“Ah, on all fours.” The command came as you went to push up on your feet. You dropped to your hands, looking up at Jake through lashes that were clumped together from your tears. He licked his lips, his pupils blown out with lust as he looked at you on all fours.
The belt around your neck was used as a makeshift leash, Jake walking you towards your bed where he sat on the edge. His hard cock stood straight up, resting against his abdomen. Your eyes were drawn to it, staring until he spoke again.
“Look at you.” He hummed, finally letting go of the belt so he could grip your chin. “On all fours like some kind of bitch,” normally he would never call you that and you would never stand for it. Right now, though? Fuck did it do things to you. “I bet your pussy is just dripping down your thighs right now. Turn around, put that ass up, daddy wants to see.” He tapped your cheek a little harder this time before nodding his head.
Biting your lip you turned around and arched your ass up, pressing your face close to the floor. From behind you the groan he let out was low. Suddenly two of his fingers were swiping from your clenching hole down to your clit and then they were gone. You whimpered and turned to look only to find Jake stroking himself, using your arousal as lubricant. The sight had you whimpering and wiggling your ass in the air. Asking for him to fuck you, but he just shook his head.
“Not yet, little one. C’mere.” His accent slipped a little, indicating just how aroused he was at the moment.
When you reached him again he lifted you up and laid you on your back on bed. With one hand he held your wrists above your head and with the other he secured your hands to the head board.
Jake didn’t want you running from the pleasure and he knew without the restraint that’s exactly what you would do. “Be a good girl for daddy and try not to move too much.” He knew he could only ask so much, because he knew what he was about to do.
A kiss was placed on your forehead and then he trailed his nose down along your skin, taking in your scent and leaving nips here and there. Well, not really nips. They were marks. Ones that you knew you’d see come morning.
Upon reaching your nipple he bit down roughly. You yelped again but that quickly changed into a moan as you bucked your hips, searching for some sort of friction. Jake sucked your nipple into his mouth while he spread your legs and situated himself between them before continuing his trek down.
Coming face to face with your sloppy cunt he ran his nose along your inner thighs, nipping as he went. The scent of your arousal made him groan. You always smelled so sweet, especially when you were this worked up.
His arms snaked under and around your thighs, throwing your legs over his shoulders as he settled with his face centimeters away from your cunt. “No coming until I say so.”
Fuck. You were in for a long night.
“Oh-ungh!” You whimpered out as his tongue licked a stripe up your slit. Your hips moved and Jake’s grip tightened to hold you still.
Collecting some of your slick on his thumb he pressed hard circles into your clit as his tongue dove into your cunt. You cried out loudly, your head thrashing back. Jake was eating you like you were his last meal and it was a fucking heavenly experience. You’d never met a man as skilled with his mouth as Jake was, but Jake had also never loved eating someone the way he did with you. If all he had to survive on was your pussy, he would die one happy man.
“Daddy…p-puh...so…gonna…” Just as you felt that blinding light about to hit the ministrations stopped.
Your eyes shot open and Jake felt his cock grow harder at the wild look in your eyes. “What did daddy say?” You whimpered, but didn’t answer him. “Words little one, or you won’t cum at all tonight.” The threat had you stilling because you knew it was true. He would absolutely deprive you of an orgasm. He’d done it before.
“No coming.” You whined, but nodded your head in agreement.
“Good girl, he purred and dipped his head back down. Only this time he sucked your clit into his mouth while two of his fingers dove inside of you.
“Daddy!” The sensations were so getting so intense you dug your heels into the mattress and tried to push away, but Jake wouldn’t let you. Instead the arm that was still looped around one of your thighs tightened again, squeezing almost painfully.
Jake could feel you clench around his fingers and just before you came he pulled his fingers out of you. Making you cry out, tears blurring your vision again. You could barely make out how swollen and red his cock had grown as he rubbed it up and down your slit.
Jake’s hand came up, wrapping up in your hair again and gripping it tightly. After pumping his cock a few times he gripped your hip and in one thrust he bottomed out inside of you. You let out a scream as your back arched up the bed violently.
He wasn’t slow in his thrusts. Each one was hard and meaningful. “Open your eyes little one,” you registered the words but your brain was becoming so fuzzy you didn’t obey. Until he slapped, not hard enough to really do any damage, but enough that it had your eyes shooting open. “There are those pretty eyes.” He grunted.
His fingers dug into your hip so hard you knew he was going to leave bruises. “Want to tell daddy why you were being such a brat tonight?” Jake had leaned forward, his eyes staring into yours.
“A-aphr…fuck!” The tip of his cock brushed against your cervix in a painfully pleasurable way.
“Come on baby girl, spit it out.” Your eyes rolled back into your head when he changed the angle of his thrust just slightly. Just enough to hit your sweet spot.
“J-fuck-je..d-daddy…” you couldn’t even form a sentence right now and he was trying to get you to tell him you were jealous.
“Were you jealous of Aphrodite, baby?”
At first all you could do was nod. “Y-yes!” Jake’s lips met yours in a bruising kiss. His thrusts became a bit more erratic and you could tell he was trying to hold his own orgasm back.
“Thank you for telling daddy,” he hummed against your lips. Then he was pinching your clit and hammering your sweet spot over and over. “You can cum for daddy.”
And cum you did. Hard. Your screams so loud you knew that your throat would be raw come tomorrow, especially with the way he’d fucked your throat earlier. Jake’s orgasm came just a few thrust later. His seed coating your walls as his thrusts slowed down, softly fucking the both of you through your orgasms.
He reached up to undo the belt and as soon as your hands were free you wrapped your arms around his neck.
You didn’t even realize you’d started crying until Jake was cooing at you. “Hey sweet girl, why are you crying? Did I hurt you?” His voice was soft and sweet as he wiped the tears from your eyes.
“No. I’m just…I’m sorry about everything I did at the club.” Your voice was weak, both from screaming and from being vulnerable. “I-I just was so scared that you were going to leave me, because y-you talk about Aphrodite so much and like you w-were smitten.” You sobbed out, burning your head into his chest.
Jake sat up, pulling you into his lap and squeezing you tightly. Gently he lifted your chin so you would look at him. “Baby girl, I could never love anyone the way I love you. I’m so sorry I made you feel that way, but I wish you would have said something first.” He let out a sigh and reached over to the night stand on his side of the bed.
You watched, trying to calm your sobs from your insecurity finally bubbling up now that the anger had been effectively fucked out of you.
Just when your heart was starting to calm down it picked right back up as your eyes landed on the little velvet box in his hands.
“This wasn’t exactly how I planned on doing this, but I think it’s warranted.” He chuckled and popped open the box. The diamonds in the ring sparkled as the dim light in the bedroom bounced off it.
Another fresh round of tears started streaming down your cheeks as you processed what was happening.
“Sweets, will you marry me?”
You practically tackled him into the headboard with your kiss. Gripping onto him so tightly, like this was all a dream and you’d wake up as soon as you let go.
“I’ll take that as a yes?” He chuckled breathlessly when you finally pulled away.
“Absolutely, Aphrodite can suck it.”
“Sweets, I think she’d rather steal you from me than steal me from you.” Jake let out a loud laugh as he watched the realization cross your face in the form of a crimson blush.
You smacked his bicep, staring at him incredulously. “You couldn’t have told me that before I danced with that cretin at the club?!”
Jake flinched back from you, rubbing the spit you’d hit. “Well it wasn’t like you gave me a chance!”
You groaned and let yourself fall back on the bed, your messy hair splaying around you like halo. Jake chuckled as he picked you, bridal style this time. “Come on, let’s go take a warm bath, fiancée.”

Also also: is there any way, or will there be any way, for readers without whichever special edition (?) it’s in to read “Letters to My Lady from the Abyss…”? Reading your Reddit AMA in a desire to know more about this wonderful book and the idea of a tiny bit extra has me 👀
Thank you for wishing to know more! FairyLoot special edition is the special edition with bonus content. I will explain more. FairyLoot is a wonderful UK-based group who make fancy special editions for their monthly boxes. People sign up for FairyLoot and get books picked for them. You can get Young Adult, Adult Fantasy, or Romantasy, or a combination thereof - Long Live Evil was the August Adult Fantasy pick - and you can buy other special editions from their website. So the FairyLoot folks are Tastemakers as well as makers of beautiful objects. (ISN’T IT BEAUTIFUL? Pictures stolen. Interior art by Bon Orthwick who got Marius’s hair PERFECT.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But you can’t buy the monthly boxes, unless they have extras! If they do have extra Evils to buy, I will put up a link.
There are many boxes now, but FairyLoot and Illumicrate are the two biggest and have made a lot more people embrace reading and see books as a special treat. Waterstones and Barnes & Noble have started making special editions of books because of them. A while back I knew none of this, because I was staying away from publishing, working with IP books (very different branch of publishing) and training for a different job. But then I did a catch-up call with my frien. She talked about FairyLoot. I did not understand her and thought maybe the deadlines had got on top of her and she believed fairies had looted her manuscript.
Holly: So these FairyLoot editions have (She holds up a copy of… I think… the Coldest Girl In Coldtown?) been amazing for UK sales.
Sarah: Sorry but why are these books so beautiful?
Holly: Because I just explained to you why, girl. Sarah: Can I have this.
Holly: No they’re limited!
So then I knew FairyLoot was a Giant Deal and they were offered Long Live Evil but I was sure they wouldn’t pick me.
My lovely editor Jenni: great news, the FairyLoot people picked you! Sarah: are you. are you quite sure.
Jenni: … yes? Could you write them some bonus content? Sarah: YES! A thing I can do for them? Oh yes! Here’s three things I can do. Tell them they can pick which one they would like!
I wrote a letter for them as well, to be bound in with the book. But the bonus content is an extra adventure or point of view you didn’t get to see in the main book. FairyLoot picks what they think their readers might like most.
I really like epistolary novels, where the action is told though letters, such as Jane Austen’s Lady Susan and Amal El Mohtar and Max Gladstone’s This Is How You Lose The Time War. So I thought it would be fun to do a story through letters!
Obviously I then had a moment of dark self-doubt.
Sarah: O my god why did they pick this nobody’s going to like him what shall I do! Holly: When I was writing Cardan’s letters you said ‘epistolary is so fun, you said, this is a piece of cake, you said, get in loser we’re writing romantically sinister letters, you said…’
Sarah: my Vision is a romantic The Screwtape Letters. Holly: … oh dear. Okay. Get in loser we’re writing romantically sinister letters.
And so with a lil help from my kind frien, I wrote Letters to My Lady From the Abyss, which is an epistolary short story with a POV we don’t get in book 1 and an adventure we don’t get to see. But I did write it, as you see, for FairyLoot so it belongs to them and it’s up to them. I think I might get it back in a year and then I’ll put it up on my website. I will let you know!
Tumblr media
I am so sorry for this very long explanation, I just wanted to let you know what was up.
Should you read it, I hope you enjoy. And I will write more bonus content, I promise!
Also speaking of FairyLoot, they’re doing a readalong of Long Live Evil right now if anyone might like to chat about the book. Here’s a link to people talking about chapters 1-7 - they will do a different chunk every day! I like that people are choosing favourite characters, so far the Cobra, Key and Emer have the votes!

OUR SECRET — MYG
final chapter
Summary: You and Yoongi are having an affair. No, you are not being his lover. But the world is not ready to know that an idol is dating someone. So you two were doing your best to make sure no one found out. Until he breaks up with you. His mistake.
Author's note: It was a beautiful journey to write this fanfic. But unfortunately, it comes to an end in this chapter. I will miss all the readers of this fanfic, which was so precious to me. Thank you all, and until next time.

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade." Upon reflection, this philosophy could be right, but no one mentions that sometimes, just sometimes, life gives you lemons and you don't have the strength for anything else. It's been two months since your baby passed away. You're trying to move forward, but the path ahead seems so murky, as if there's nowhere to go. Since your daughter's passing, you and Yoongi have been trying to maintain a sense of peace, but it feels like a hollow peace. He works all day and only comes home late at night. You've returned to work as a book editor, doing some freelance work from home.
"How is this going to be?" You ask, with the laptop in your lap, as you stare at the corrections needed for the new book that some new author wants to publish at the publishing house where you work. Yoongi looks at you, bringing a plate of food that he's trying to learn to cook.
"What do you mean by that?" Yoongi speaks as he hands you a plate and takes another for himself. You look, trying to understand if he hasn't noticed that you've been treated like a child since your daughter died.
"I mean, husband, that I know you've been neglecting your concert schedule and what should have been your tour with the boys, because of me. It's noble of you, but you know that I can take care of myself, right?" You say, tasting the macaroni that Yoongi made. He's a good cook.
"Wife, I'm not just doing this for you. It's just that I didn't plan on working at this time. But believe me, I'm working on a new album." Yoongi says as he turns on the television to watch the sports channel. At least that's what you think he's watching.
"Even so, I may seem fragile, but I can be alone. I can even call you while you're away. I don't want you to neglect your life because of me. I'll be here when you come back, no matter where you're from." You say as you set your laptop on the table and sit close to him. You continue eating the macaroni he made. Eventually, both of you finish eating, and you decide to put some music on the television. He looks at you angrily for changing the channel from sports. Then you extend your hand to him, hoping he'll take it so you can dance. After some grumbling, he gets up and pulls you close by your waist.
"You know it's weird for us to dance like this, for no reason after dinner, right?" Yoongi asks, and you feel a bit awkward about saying that you're trying to be spontaneous. It's been a while since you and he have done anything cute together.
"Loving someone means doing senseless things with them, you know? And I think it's been a while since the last time we were romantically together. Our beginning was all secretive and full of passion. Then we had a dramatic breakup that resulted in a surprise pregnancy that left us both grieving for our daughter. We're married now, but I feel like we barely dated. Maybe now is the time for us to do cute, silly, and romantic things." You confide in Yoongi as you rest your head on his shoulder, and you both continue dancing slowly.
"I don't regret any of this, though. Our love story is confusing. Maybe even complicated. But at least I have you. And you have me. And I may not show it very well, but you are the most precious thing I have now. I love my fans, I love my group, but my love for you is greater than the success I have. I know it took a long time for me to say this to you, and I'm really sorry for not being the man you deserved, but I want to be now. Know that." Yoongi says, pulling his head back slightly, looking at you, and you immediately kiss him. A calm and peaceful kiss. Exactly how you want your love to be.
"You know… I could go on tour with you if you need me to. And I think in the future, we can consider expanding our love, but for now, it would be good to take some time to reconnect, you know." You say with your mouth still close to Yoongi's, who gives you a few pecks while seeming very lost in your lips to care much about what you're saying.
"I think this part of reconnecting is very important. Do you want to start now?" Yoongi says and kisses you. A deeper kiss, and extremely needy. Needy for you. You try to show that you feel so much I miss his kisses as much as he does. The truth is, you want Yoongi. You want to give a chance to a flame that has been extinguished for some time. Yoongi holds your face gently but firmly and intensifies the kiss. His hands roaming your body make you feel alive.
"Honey, I think we should take this reconnection to the bedroom, don't you think?" You speak as you move away from him a little and walk at a pace very slowly to your room. Your heart feels like it's going to escape through your mouth, because of your nervousness. But then Yoongi grabs your hand and spins you around.
"I love you." He says smiling slightly and kissing you. You know he loves you. And you feel the same way about him. You then pull him to bed and there you reconnect in the most beautiful way.
Your story continues to be a lesson for some time that not every love story happens in the same way. You loved each other and just when you were separating, you discovered that together you could be better. With Yoongi you faced grief. And with you, Yoongi matured. Fortunately, years later you adapted to married life and he was able to return to being a world-famous singer. You have a mature relationship filled with reconnections. Every year you go to the cemetery to take flowers for your daughter. It seems that sometimes finding a happy ending means going through many barriers. But you're trying to live your happily ever after with Yoongi.

Throughout the books, airplane bro or as I would like to call him Airplane-nim reminds me of that one scene from Doom at you Service. Where basically the fl Tak Dongkyun (an editor or like a manager for a web novel company) attends the funeral of one of the authors grandfather's. His name is Siberia btw.
And Siberia tells how bad he feels that he never really told his grandfather what he writes, because he felt shy of his work. Eventhough his grandpa was proud that his grandson is an author. And the Dongkyung just tells the author that he would have been proud of his works. And the author gets excited and just goes, "Like 'You were never just a friend to me'?" and the editor shakes her head. Because no, this three star bl novel is not his best work. Not even close. And she names the novel she likes. But the author again mentions another whacky 1 star rated novel. And she gets frustrated, "See, this is why you can't rank high because the stories you like, nobody else likes"
That's so cucumber and airplane coded.
Because imagine a world where Cucumber turns from hater to manager/editor of Airplane. And he just has to constantly tell his ideas off. "No this will make a plot hole, no it will only confuse the reader, for fucks sake how many chapters long does this porn scene have to last?"
And they have a similar conversation at Airplanes relative's funeral.
Then Shen Yuan dies out of frustration of too much work load. Since he has to constantly edit the plot holes and what not. But Airplane writes like Turbo the snail crawls. Too many chapters in one day.
And then the conversation happens again.
Imagine Shen Yuan dies because of work. Whatever, he goes back to Luo Binghe, chokes on anger, whatever the reason. He dies. And a
Airplane goes to his funeral with his friend or something. Airplane goes there for friend reasons? Hometown reason? They've been through thick and thin? Idk, he goes there. He looks at Shen Yuans photo and just tells his friend, "Man. Maybe I should quit writing. It's so terrible that Cucumber-bro left so many hate comments in my drafts. And then he even died of out of sheer anger".
And the friend goes, "Noo. Shen Yuan was probably very proud of your works". And Qinghua just looks into the distance for a moment and thinks, "Like Proud Immortal Demon Way?"
"No, more like your previous works", the friend shakes their head.
This is so random and such a raw idea. I'm not sure how it would actually look like.

Hello, long time follower just on other platforms and I love your work. I am currently getting my Masters in Comics and Graphic Novels, and do tell me if this an inappropriate question but how much do you make? Like a month doing comics and art? Also what do you do on a day to day basis? I'm worried about my future after I graduate.
Thank you so much! This is a great question, and I wish more people would be candid about answering it because I'd like creators to demand more money. This will be a very long post! Keep reading if you're interested. MASSIVE info dump below.
Tumblr media
I think earnings in comics and books can look wildly different for almost every creator, and it depends on a lot of things. With that in mind, I make a slightly different amount every year. I view my finances mostly through page rates, contracted projects, and passive-ish income. Because I'm terrible at math, I'm just going to tell you how much I make per contracted projects, plus some relevant information in terms of Life Stuff. This will be very long, and I will highlight some important details that people maybe don't like to talk about very much.
Please also bear in mind that I live in Minnesota, away from all my major publishers and editors who are situated on the coasts, so my cost of living is much more manageable.
Background: Building a Foundation (2012-2018)
I graduated from college in 2012 and lived with my parents until 2018. I did not have to pay rent or worry about food, so I got to save up a lot of money to invest in developing as an artist–paying for printing zines, making merch, travel to conventions, table costs, and secure hotel accommodations. This helped enormously, and I would not have been able to spend six years developing my portfolio and connecting with comics peers and professionals without my parents. They were very supportive, even if they had no idea that I was developing professionally as an artist (LOL, they're very proud of me now, but they truly just thought I was being a weird internet gremlin the whole time). They're also not wealthy people by any means. My parents immigrated to the US in their 20s as refugees with absolutely no money and one baby (it me, I am the baby), but they each became pretty successful small-business owners in their own right and were able to help put me through school with minimal debt, even through the financial crisis in the late aughts.
I started making art in 2012-ish as well, but only semi-professionally, and barely on purpose. I was employed full-time in a non-art job between 2013 and 2018 at a local non-profit that specialized in pediatric therapy. I occupied a role as their front office person/corporate assistant. I made about 40k a year at that job, with benefits, and I made a negligible amount of money doing art and making comics. I should also note that throughout this time, I was working 40 hours a week at my day job, commuting between 2-4 hours a day depending on the weather (my commute was an hour for each direction in good weather and up to three hours if it snowed), and then working on comics for 3-4 hours in the evening, every evening. This meant that I would frequently be working anywhere between 65-85 hours a week for five years, and I do not recommend this! I burned out pretty bad! I didn't go to art school or learn about comics, either, so I felt like I had to spend time building my portfolio to make up for lost time. I didn't even know I wanted to make comics until maybe two years after I graduated from undergrad.
Tumblr media
I did manage to build a nice portfolio and connect with people who were making the sort of work I liked to make, so the portfolio-building did help. I posted regularly online in different platforms and steadily grew an audience over the years via Tumblr (heyyy!) Instagram (which I personally loathe), Patreon (stressful, but necessary and also getting more comfortable to use!), and Twitter (which I have very mixed feelings about, but I'll miss it if it dies). I did a few short comics with writers whose work I admired. The Fresh Romance Anthology in 2015 was my first major published work, and it was with writer Marguerite Bennett, who remains one of my absolute favorite people. I was so inexperienced at the time, and she would check in with me to make sure I got paid for my work, and then she would follow up with everyone responsible if I was not properly compensated. Not everybody is this on-the-ball about making sure their colleagues are treated well, and she absolutely set the bar for me going forward.
Doing It For Real + Some Numbers (2018-2021)
In 2018, I put together a pitch document for The Magic Fish (if you'd like to see my pitch document, here is a Dropbox link to it! It's just a book report for a book that doesn't exist yet, and I hope you find it helpful if you need it), shopped around for an agent, and found one I'm very happy with (Kate McKean at Morhaim! She's amazing! She runs a newsletter where she gives you the lowdown on how the publishing industry works, so if you're interested in Books, you can check out her writing over at Agents and Books). Then my agent shopped the pitch around to editors and publishers, and Random House Graphic won out. Also, every time she negotiates a contract for me in my home market (the US), she gets 15% cut, which is entirely worth it to me. She does so much. It's incredible.
Tumblr media
Random House Graphic's offer wound up being for two books at $45k each, with pretty standard royalty rates, I think around 10% in general, though there are stipulations around royalties that I can't remember off the top of my head (and also bear in mind that you do not earn royalties until your book sales have earned out your advance, and not all published books earn out). To me, this is a lot of money! BUT the graphic novel took two full years to make, so that $45k needed to last me until 2020, which is not livable if you're on you're own. Also, the advance is paid out in chunks at certain milestones of project completion. I'd get a few thousand at a time for the script, another few for the thumbnails, more for the inks, and on and on until the book is done. I would not start to get paid for the second book until I started working on it.
Earlier in 2018, I'd moved in with my partner, so we managed paying the bills and groceries together. Luckily for me, I had also completed a full tarot deck as a separate personal art project to help build my confidence as an illustrator, and my agent sold the tarot deck project (The Star Spinner Tarot) to a different publisher for a $15k advance, so I had some extra wiggle room in 2018. I quit my day job because this was a rare instance in which a book deal provided me with enough money to live on making art, with the caveat that I shared financial responsibilities with my partner. By this time, my Patreon, which I started back in 2015 I think, was also earning anywhere between $800-$1000 a month, which was really great semi-passive income. I'd post process shots and WIPs a couple times a week, and that really helped from month to month.
In 2020, The Magic Fish was published and got a lot of really lovely press. It debuted on the Indie Best-Seller list, and it got pretty popular in schools and libraries. Suddenly, my responsibilities expanded to also being a public speaker (side note: if you make a book about topics of some academic interest, make a generic powerpoint presentation about it now! I'm so serious!). I stopped tabling at conventions (the pandemic), but I would also be paid for speaking gigs in between. I'm not an enormously in-demand public speaker, so I usually asked for an honorarium of about $500 from schools and institutions for online appearances, though I'm about to ask for a lot more because it's cutting into a lot of the time I need to make comics and hit my deadlines. As people are more comfortable meeting in person, I usually ask for a speaking fee of at least $1500, and it must be after they've already taken care of my travel and accommodations. I'm not very well versed in the standards for speaking fees for debut authors, so this might not be standard! It's just my best estimation of the value of my time and effort for that instance.
Speaking of comics and deadlines, I sometimes take on smaller projects for DC (you might have seen these) and Marvel (shhh it's not been announced yet), and the page rates for those, as they've paid me, are usually as follows: $90 per page for writing ($45 for plotting and $45 for scripting), $160 for pencils per page, and $90 for inking per page. I've never colored or lettered, so I don't know those rates. I do regularly talk to other writers and artists, and the rates for writers are all over the place and seem to depend on whether you've signed an exclusive contract with either of those companies. I don't know what a contracted penciller or inker is paid by them, or if that's even a thing that happens? I also sometimes do comics cover work, and I usually charge between $1200 and $1500. I tend to charge a bit more for covers these days because I personally don't like doing covers all that much.
Tumblr media
Starting to Reap the Benefits Maybe? (2021-2022)
In 2021, I started getting royalty checks for both Star Spinner Tarot and The Magic Fish. These payments will vary wildly, and I think they will naturally peter off as time goes on, and I'll need to make more books and projects. In both cases, I was surprised. I think at one point a random check hit my bank account for like $20k and I nearly fainted, but some of the other royalty checks will be much more modest. This process of getting paid is also immensely eased by having a good agent! I cannot stress this enough!
Then both the Star Spinner Tarot and The Magic Fish got foreign language licenses, and those come with small advances of their own, each between $2k and $3k, from what I can recall, with varying royalty rates depending on the publisher who acquired those rights. Those royalty rates are, in my limited experience, more modest than my American publisher's, come to around 7% or 8%. The Star Spinner Tarot got an official French edition, and The Magic Fish has been licensed for publication in Italian, French, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Spanish so far.
Since 2021, I've also signed on to draw two more graphic novels for other people, and my agent is able to demand higher advances for me, even when I'm only doing the drawing part.
Tumblr media
My Day-to-Day
I think that's about as comprehensive as I can be about numbers. On a daily basis, my schedule depends on whether I'm writing or drawing. Graphic novels are long projects. I'll be writing for months at a time and then drawing for even more months or even years after. I spend a lot of time answering emails for speaking requests, and my agent will sometimes pass along emails about legitimate project requests (another advantage of having an agent is I don't have to sift through scam emails or shady collaborators). I spend way more time answering emails and trying to iron out my calendar than I'd like.
I'm currently working on my second graphic novel for Random House Graphic, and I'm extremely excited about it.
Another thing I've learned is that I like to bounce between projects, but they have to be between a paid project and a personal project. If I'm juggling paid projects, I get overwhelmed and stressed. If I can work on a paid project and then also make personal art, I can feel some relief and maintain a positive relationship with my work. If you can ever get to a point where you can manage to do this, I highly recommend it. I never want to hate making comics, and this balance of personal-to-paid projects helps me keep loving the work.
Closing Thoughts
My only hesitation in talking candidly about all this is that I'm not sure my professional trajectory is applicable for most people. I think I've had a uniquely positive experience once I got off the ground, and I know most people's journeys are very much not this smooth. In a lot of ways, I got very lucky. And along the way I had help, especially before I got my foot firmly in the door. I don't think I make stratospherically high amounts of money, but I know this is still an atypically stable amount for a lot of artists and authors. And even so, I anticipate that some years will be better or worse than others.
Obviously, I couldn’t cover absolutely everything, but my hope is that this will be a good starting point for you to figure out what you need to plan for the future. Best of luck! Thank you for your question! I’m sorry it’s so long.

Sending this here because I didn't want to clutter that post.
I won't get mad at you for having an opinion different than mine 😂 don't worry.
I guess your opinion of Hazelwood is like mine with Colleen Hoover. She's just not for me.
Also my main issue with SJM is that she seems to have no idea where Acotar is going anymore. She takes too long between books and then forgets the original thought she'd had. She keeps changing her mind and retconning things.
Also if you have any romance book recs , I'd love to take a look.
I'm glad, and likewise! I've gotten a lot better over time in terms of pickiness towards books, and I fully acknowledge that there are two different types of "good" books: books that someone loves and enjoys, and books that are genuinely well-written. Ideally, those overlap, but not always.
I think my issue is more with the idea that seems to be prevalent that SJM somehow "is" fantasy, or that her books are at all an accurate representation of the genre when that simply isn't true. There's room in the genre for different types, but I personally can't look at someone who's only ever read SJM and call them a fantasy reader--they aren't. They're a Sarah J. Maas reader.
I had to switch to audiobooks to overlook her grammar and punctuation errors. Again, that's something an editor should be helping with, and I can't understand why better quality work isn't being done. All writers make errors--none are perfect. Yet there isn't an excuse for the volume of them in her books given the resources at her disposal and investment publishing companies have made in them.
The lack of consistency also frustrates me. I don't understand why she "undoes" so much without providing appropriate context or reason, and for me, that even comes down to the fundamentals of the story. This could be helped somewhat with adequate worldbuilding, yet when it comes down to it, even the Night Court could at best be described as, "Whatever Feyre and Rhys want it to be." Or, it's culturally/politically whatever the plot needs it to be at that specific moment.
ACOWAR felt like the end of the series to me, so I think you bring up a good point with her not knowing where to take the story anymore. Maybe she does, and maybe she doesn't. There's always been a lot of aimless writing throughout the series, and each book could easily be cut down about two hundred pages without losing any substance or necessary detail.
There's a lot of room for complexity and intrigue she simply never digs into.
What are the consequences for the bargains being made (besides the short-sighted death pact)?
What do the people of Night truly think about a twenty-one-year-old human girl who became High Fae yesterday being made their High Lady?
What is the depth of the impact of Feyre's and Tamlin's actions to the survivors in Spring? Their lives were uprooted because their High Lord made stupid decisions and their lives were worsened because of a messy breakup.
SJM does deliver on the romance between Feyre and Rhys. I wasn't as sold on Nesta and Cassian (even if I love Cass). I'm curious to see what she will do with either Elain and Lucien or Elain and Azriel (or Azriel and Gwyn).
Aside from the first book (which, let be real, was completely unnecessary given the direction things took), the romances aren't at all my issue with her writing. The worldbuilding has always been an issue: there's no grounding, technology makes no sense, and fashion seems completely random in Night.
The retconning is inexcusable. It's very clear to me that regardless of what she says, she had very different plans for Tamlin at the start of the series. I always thought he and Feyre had no chemistry and that the whole thing felt forced, but she gave no such indication of awareness in the book. Feyre, in my opinion, immediately had more chemistry with Rhys, and while I think it was obvious something was inevitably going to happen between them, SJM took the easiest routes possible for herself (story be damned) and made Tamlin a mindless villain.
Did I ever like Tamlin? No.
Did I think he and Feyre needed to be together at any point? Definitely not.
Do I think he deserved to be written better and for his character to be given more nuance after spending an entire book with him? Absolutely.
I'm worried about what she'll do with Lucien, Elain, and the Autumn Court. Lucien has been my favorite from the beginning--I joked early on about him being exhausted from carrying all of Prythian and the entire first book on his back. Elain has tremendous potential in her own right, and so does the Autumn Court.
I would actually rather see SJM slow down in her writing. I think the speed shows when the story and characterization becomes messy and careless.
Recommendations
It depends on the type of romance you'd want. Carissa Broadbent is the complete opposite and not only digs into multifaceted characters, complex political systems, and intricate psychology, but she pretty much never comes up for breath. Each book in every series she writes gets better as it goes along. My favorite is her Crowns of Nyaxia series, but The War of Lost Hearts (an earlier series of hers) certainly checks the high fantasy worldbuilding boxes on a entirely different level. Every point that I feel SJM misses, Carissa nails.
Be warned: she will gleefully make you question quite a bit about your own morality.
It's not strictly fantasy romance, but Katherine Arden is also excellent in both prose, character complexity, nuance, and worldbuilding (the same strengths Carissa shares). I recommend The Winternight Trilogy.
If you're looking for something quirkier with a wildly twisted sense of humor, T. Kingfisher's Paladin's Grace is a great option. Her characters are also in their thirties/early forties in The Saint of Steel series. There are a few typos I recall seeing and the (obviously) intentional use of run-ons during humorous action scenes. The first two books are great. I did want more out of the third one, personally.
I recently read The Spellshop by Sarah Beth Durst and can say I will gladly pick up more of her books in the future. She has a lovely, gentle command of language, and this book in particular is the definition of cozy. The romance is light, but it's very sweet. This is a whimsical read perfect for a cottagecore crowd. I will say while I felt the last act wasn't as strong as the rest, it was still more than worth the read.
I haven't yet read Hoover, but I've heard quite a few similar opinions. At the end of the day, something not being for us doesn't mean we're against the author's success or bashing anyone else's opinions. It often means we either value different things in books or our opinions have been formed through different experiences.

have been trying (trying. key word) to read lightlark, which idk if anyones heard of it's a YA novel that went viral on tiktok awhile back from the author's pitch video which im pretty sure i watched and it just went over the premise like "would anyone read a book about: six rulers who all meet up on an island call lightlark once every hundred years to fight to the death to break the curses on their realms" and its set to dramatic music and aesthetic fantasy photos (i have done a terrible job summarizing this video i havent seen it in ages and i don't care to look it up).
and the thing is. many people REALLY like this book? (to be fair. i did go look at the goodreads page a few chapters in because i needed to check how off base i was with MY judgement of it and many people also did not like this book. which made me feel better but i digress) so i want to give it a fair shake because i don't think the author is a bad writer necessarily. some elements i really like. and i'm not that far in (it's a long book though like 600 pages and im on page 200ish. also im reading an ebook from my library so the page count may vary) so maybe it gets better?
but my first impression that i still stand by is that it's a first draft and it should have been a seventh draft at LEAST. and get a new editor who actually loves you and wants you to succeed LMAO

Howdy! Could we get a member introduction? I’d love to get to know y’all’s names and pronouns ^^
We actually did an essay and interview for the queer horror zine The Quiet Ones last year where we shared some fun intros! I've included screenshots of our intros here, but if you have a chance, you should check out the zine as well: it's run by a delightful group of queer authors and editors.

Here's the link to the issue with the Forgetmenauts feature: our bit starts on page 47.
(Fun fact: Kit is also an author and has had a couple of their short stories published in other issues of the zine, under their full name of Katharine Gripp. They're here and here if you want to check them out!)
Image text below the cut:
Walker Staples (they/them) Instrument(s): Guitar/Banjo/Vocals
Favorite scary movie or book: Let the Right One In.
Favorite cryptid: Jackalope. Who in the band is most likely to survive a horror movie, and why?: I think it's gonna be Tyler; most resources, best equipped for building booby traps.
Tyler Gary (he/him) Instrument(s): Clarinet, Saxophone, Trombone, Keys. Favorite scary movie or book: Recently I read Mexican Gothic and while it wasn't my all time favorite, it definitely captured some good haunting creepy vibes. Would recommend for the mushroom horror.
Favorite cryptid: The chupacabra. Who in the band is most likely to survive a horror movie, and why?: I'd be the second or third to die. “Quick everybody, I have a plan! All we have to do is...“ *Dies in a horrible dramatic way*. I think Abe would be last to die. He would disappear early on and we would think he's dead but he actually just went on a hike and came back at the end.
Abe Finkelstein (he/him) Instrument(s): Cello, un-mic'd backup vocals and banter, howling. Favorite scary movie or book: Oryx and Crake. And I listened to a great podcast about Midsommar but will probably never have the guts to watch it.
Favorite cryptid: The Baba Yaga house. Who in the band is most likely to survive a horror movie, and why?: Definitely Emma. She lives on a sailboat and is a great problem solver, and good at engineering. You might think I was on a hike but I was actually dead the WHOLE time.
Danielle (she/her) Instrument(s): Drums!
Favorite scary movie or book: I am scared easily and don't really watch horror movies! You
didn't ask about this, but my favorite scary-ish video games are The Last of Us and Dead Space.
Favorite cryptid: Loveland frog. Who in the band is most likely to survive a horror movie, and why?: Walker, they would out-maneuver the attacker/swarm/ pathogen/whatever the horror of the horror movie is.
Kit Gripp (they/she) Instrument(s): Mandolin, vocals.
Favorite scary movie or book: Sunshine by Robin McKinley (ok so it’s not that scary but there’s lots of blood and vampires, so it counts).
Favorite cryptid: Nessie. Who in the band is most likely to survive a horror movie, and why?: Probably Collin. If it were something corporeal, he'd knock it out with a baseball bat. If it were an angry ghost, he'd talk to it and de-escalate the situation.
Emma Williams Instrument(s): Bass.
Favorite scary movie or book: House of Leaves.
Favorite cryptid: Selkie. Who in the band is most likely to survive a horror movie, and why?: I think Walker would be the most likely to survive because they are very nimble and quick.
Collin (he/him) Instrument(s): Drums!
Favorite scary movie or book: Hard to pick a favorite scary movie! Maybe Let the Right One In (the original one). It's rare that horror films are at once so beautiful, disturbing, and sympathetic to the villain.
Favorite cryptid: Michigan Dogman. Who in the band is most likely to survive a horror movie, and why?: Kit survives the horror movie, for sure. Zombie flick? Kit decapitates the shambling hordes with lethal pirouettes. Teen slasher film? Kit distracts the villain with some concocted-on-the- spot YA fiction just long enough that he doesn't even notice he's walking right into his own poetic and ironic death. Vampire horror show? Please. Kit was the vampire. Kit was always the vampire.

If You Want to Write a Good Book, Practice First
The book-writing community is so much weirder than the journalism community. Half the book writing/publishing groups I'm in are great, and the other half are full of posts like this:
"I’m working on a book and I’ve never published anything first. Never even crossed my mind and I still have no desire to do so."
"Hey, I’m new to writing! How do I publish a book?"
"Money doesn't matter! You have to write a book for the love of it! Never give up even if you have to spend every weekend for 20 years finding an agent!"
"i herd 7to hav 80k words write get agenet maniscrupt mine 7k words agent here can@ publishmy bok"
"I wrote a book for my dad. Writing it took five years and I published it five years ago. It sold 3 copies. Why is no one buying it? Do I need to take a marketing class?"
"I need an agent to represent me and a publisher to pay me, but I don't care if the book sells a single copy. I just want to have fun!"
None of these people are going to be traditionally published, and it seems they might not understand/care about writing for an audience in a competitive market.
Listen: I am not forcing anyone to delay or give up their publishing attempts. I couldn't stop you if I wanted to, and I don't. I'm just explaining that there are more successful processes for achieving certain goals but they take work.
I have asked people really earnestly and politely what appeals to them about publishing a full book if they don't want to publish short stories, articles, blog posts, or fanfictions. They immediately get really mad, so...maybe they're making a realization that they should have known before?
IF you want to have fun and write without anyone reading it, I encourage you just to write in Google Docs or Medium or Tumblr. You don't need an editor to have fun! And it literally does not need to be book-length!
If you just want your book out there, technically available and even printable to have and to maintain a fantasy they'll go viral, I suggest self-publishing.
IF you actually expect to make money and sell books and get representation, I encourage you to practice first. This is a profession that you and I are not special enough to luck into profiting from; it requires us to tend our craft and have respect for readers.
Anyway, I'm happy to give advice on publishing as long as you've googled your question first. I'm happy to hear explanations for why so many aspiring authors are...like this, so much moreso than I see in journalism or other professions like visual arts and sports. Like do they think writing a book saves a life or something? But if you're upset that I "killed your dream" with this post, go write your concerns in Google docs and do not send them to me.

A Court of Silver Flames
Tumblr media
3/5 stars
Spoilers for A Court of Silver Flames*
How this book made it past an editor is beyond me.
I read a review where someone said that this book felt like reading smut about a cousin and I couldn’t agree more. I can’t connect with Nesta. She will always just be Feyre’s sister to me and not a main character as she was supposed to be in this book. I feel like we were set up to dislike her in the earlier books and that dislike was set in stone for me.
This was kind of like a long fan fiction and had the same vibe as A Court of Frost anf Starlight because there wasn’t a strong plot and it read like A Court of Nesta and Friends. What little plot exists was mainly there to set up for the sex scenes and Nesta’s redemption arc. When a book is over 600 pages, I expect a strong plot, not for things to conveniently happen solely for the purpose of Nesta and Cassian having sex and for her and Rhys to salvage their relationship. The pregnancy plot came across as nothing more than an excuse for Nesta to come in and save the day so that she can redeem herself. I also think we should have seen the pregnancy through Feyre and Rhys, rather than having it happen in a book where they are side characters. Especially since it involved the death pact backfiring. I have many issues with the death pact regardless and it was a plot point that was set up for failure, especially since it was thrown into the end of ACOWAR. In fairness, we did get a bonus chapter of them finding out she’s pregnant, but after three books of their relationship developing, this seemed like a big thing to leave out. Perhaps we’ll get a novella of it one day. Although, it doesn’t seem like Feyre was getting up to much in this book while she was pregnant, so maybe it would have been somewhat uneventful to read about her pregnancy from her POV. Then again, this book is over 600 pages of nothing particularly eventful, so it wouldn’t be out of the question.
As many other reviews have said, it makes little sense that Cassian’s guts were falling out in ACOWAR and he lived, but C-sections do not exist. As I said before, a lot of things were just too convenient for the ‘plot’ so that Rhys and Nesta could have an excuse to mend the relationship. And the whole thing at the end where Nesta quickly throws in that she changed her hips as well so that she can bear a winged baby?? That’s not the sort of execution I’d expect from an author who has published multiple series and has been writing for years.
The stairs specifically don’t make sense because if Nesta is so tired from going down them, how does she make it back up the stairs every time? Surely going up is more effort than going down. This is a huge plot hole and I don’t understand how not one person picked up on it before the book was published. It’s stated that she is completely drained and doesn’t stop until the can’t take another step down, so it’s not like she’s strategically conserving enough energy to go back up. There’s one occasion where she goes down more than halfway, and then gets too tired so she goes back. Like… would it not have been easier to go down when you’re already halfway there… This bothered me the most out of everything else. The House of Wind in general is a plot hole because as far as I can recall, it’s never stated that there is another way to get in other than flying. So my question is why and how would they use it for their ‘official’ meetings and parties? Do Rhys and co go back and forth to fly all these people in? Especially during those weekly meetings Rhys and Feyre do with the citizens that was mentioned in ACOFAS, because I doubt everyone would be willing or able to go up those 10,000 steps while dressed for a party or meeting.
Also, how did Rhys and Feyre build the River House so quick? Hasn't it only been like 8 months or so since Rhys gifted her the land in ACOFAS? Has the rest of Velaris been rebuilt with this same speed since the Hybern attack? Are there still Velaris citizens living on the outskirts with their houses lying in rubble while their High Lord and High Lady built their fourth house (on the biggest plot in the city, I should add)? Let’s not forget Rhys only purchased the land because the house previously on it was ruined in the attack and the owner didn't want to rebuild. The timing is just in poor taste.
Then there’s the Valkyrie. How do Gywn and Emerie win the Rite after being dragged into it unprepared with a few months of training when we’ve been told multiple times that it is nearly impossible? Even for Illyrians who have trained their whole lives. I could maybe justify it by how it was implied that the Valkyrie had specific training methods and skills, but were those skills really that much more advanced than those of the Illyrian males? So much so that Gywn and Emerie won with only a few months of training? If so, this should have been made more clear, but I’d still find it unrealistic that said skills are so advanced that one could win the Rite with only a few months of training. If Nesta alone had won, I could maybe justify it and think about how her powers made her an exception.
It also didn’t fully sit right with me that Feyre essentially locked Nesta up in the House of Wind after what Tamlin did to her. I know it’s not the exact same situation, but it felt close enough. Even if it was truly and completely the last resort, which it seemed like it was, Feyre didn’t seem very bothered by the decision. I say this specifically because of the scene after the first meeting with Nesta, when Rhys has sent all the servants away so him and Feyre can have sex. Read the room. I get that they were both extra horny from the pregnancy, but I don’t think that scene was necessary. It felt more like SJM just being like 'don't worry! Your favorite couple from the original trilogy are still having lots of sex!' Although, I forget this is the same couple that got it on to ‘the distant cries of the injured and dying' in ACOWAR, so what do I know? At least their characters are consistent in that sense. Is there a situation they won’t fuck in? Now I’m curious about what the limit is for them to say ‘no, it’s inappropriate for us to fuck right now.’
The original trilogy made me want to read slower because I did not want the pages to end and I could read about that story forever. With this book, I ended up listening to the audiobook for 2/3 because I wanted to get it over with because I’d like to know what happens to the characters. I really only got through it because I wanted to read about Feyre and Rhys, but even they were out of character and not enjoyable. Feyre often seemed like she’d aged 30 years in the way she spoke and acted. Being High Lady and the things she went through would undoubtedly have made her more mature, but it’s only been like a year. It would have made far more sense if this book was set 50 or 100 years after the events of the last book. This didn’t feel at all like the badass and sometimes reckless Feyre who escaped the weaver, had water wolves, killed the Attor, and turned the Spring Court on each other—all of which happened approximately under two years before this book.
I would happily pretend that this book does not exist if SJM one day asked for it to be ignored so that certain plot lines could be rewritten. I didn’t like the direction of any character in this and it has not left me excited for the upcoming books in this series. In this case, I think the characters would have benefitted from having their story end in ACOWAR.
I did enjoy the dance scene between Eris and Nesta and I’m excited to read more about Eris and his side of the story. I don’t care much for Mor, though I wish Lucien made more appearances in this book.
Azriel Bonus chapter: Angry Rhys and the whole “My office. Now” is hot, but he was far too harsh with Azriel. He literally told him to go to a brothel if he’s that desperate for sex. I can see where Rhys was coming from, but he straight up threatened Azriel. Not sure how I feel about that, but maybe some justification from Rhy’s POV will help in the future. It's okay for Rhys to almost cause a war over Feyre, but Cauldron forbid Azriel even entertains the idea.
I find the Evil Rhys theory entertaining and this book made me happy in that regard, but nothing else.
The only thing this book somewhat attempted to do well is set up for another book in a different SJM series, which I will not delve into due to spoilers, but iykyk.
2.5 stars, really, but 3 because Azriel called Cassian out for the dining room. In saying all of this, I will absolutely be reading any upcoming books in this series because I love the characters and I’m invested in their stories, but this book was frustrating and slow.

Why doesn't Neiderman use his own name? I just don't get why he has take Vc andrews legacy. tbh, he isn't even a bad writer. I liked the Gemini books, and the cutler family, and I'm about to read Ruby.
Omg my friend i could talk about this all day with you 😭
Its sad because he does- or DID- write under his own name. His most notable work is Devil’s Advocate which had a movie adaptation with Keanu Reeves
I’m assuming he keeps writing under the VC Andrews brand because first and foremost- the publisher keeps paying him to do it. As long as people keep buying the new books, they’ll keep renewing his contract to write them. Believe it or not, a lot of casual fans, and those offline, dont really even know the real VC Andrews is dead.
And secondly, none of his own works (aside from maybe devil’s advocate) can touch the cult fame of Fita. I mean his name isnt a recognizable brand that way Vc Andrews is. So career wise it makes sense for him to stick with it. But i bet it kills him to know this. To know he has to pretend to be someone else in order to hit these sales numbers. That even under the vca label he hasnt come close to cracking Fita numbers. And he can NEVER claim ownership of fita, though he sure tries…
Ive said it before, but im convinced he thinks he IS Vc Andrews. Like, because he wrote more books under the name than Virginia that makes him the REAL vc andrews instead of her 🙄
I do like some of his vca books, like the Landry series, but this never should have gone on for as long as it has. Youre completely right in saying he tarnishes her legacy. This amazing disabled woman, later in her life, wrote a sensational debut hit which surprised everyone including her editor. She had an incredible legacy in her short time as an author. And now some man she never even met claims ownership of HER success. Its like some misogynistic injustice shit vca would write about lol

I've read up about sensitivity readers as a service but something about it still feels off pouring to me? I get the concept and I guess on paper it's a noble cause, but idk if stories should be striving for "sensitivity" on the basis of a single reader/editor. Do you have any particular feelings or insight on the practice?
--
Sensitivity readers have been around for a while. When operating as intended, the practice is both good and not a big deal. They're just a cultural knowledge beta with a more inflammatory title.
The version that exists within a thousand miles of YA twitter and its ilk is a hot mess.
--
See, in the ideal circumstance, what these people should be is a paid editor who does a read for specific cultural gaffes.
They'd be working alongside the main editor who'd hopefully have time for developmental notes (okay, they never do this now, but ideally), copy editors, etc. A bunch of people are taking a look at this book before it goes out into the world. The sensitivity reader is merely more familiar with some particular area, probably their own cultural background, so they can spot things the rest of the editors and the author might miss.
It's just the more professional version of some dude writer being like "Hey, female friend, would you mind reading my manuscript and telling me what you think of the female characters?"
--
Now, near the cesspit of groupthink and intellectual incuriousity that is YA twitter and in other places like that, people have come to behave as though one sensitivity reader can read for everything, not just their own personal background. They talk as though there is one objective standard for whether something is offensive and as though causing offense is the worst crime in the world.
This attitude is poison, and it's how you get assholes passing themselves off as authorities on all ethnic strife ever, then writing cartoonish villains the minute they include a setting outside of the US.
(As a sidebar, it is deeply unsurprising to find that this jackass complained about women profiting off of m/m. Beware the people who think they personally are the unique arbiter of everything. It always devolves somehow into "Buy my book, not theirs".)
A lot of loudmouths desperately wish to do this work, always talking about it as though it's a beautiful opportunity to browbeat others for a lack of wokeness. It's always the biggest clowns too. (Mardoll, for example, while whining about the attack helicopter story.)
--
And yet, sensitivity readers exist outside of the toxic waste dump that is book twitter. I can see why the idea puts your back up, but it's time to unclench.
Yeah, one member of a minority is not the ultimate arbiter of what is Objectively Offensive Forever, but that's not actually a sensitivity reader's job. They're one set of feedback among various. There's no guarantee a copy editor will catch absolutely every typo either. If you had time for 5 sensitivity readers, maybe that would be useful, but it's probably more useful to pick someone you trust. Evaluating and paring down all the feedback you get is one of the major jobs of an author after all.
It's really no different than having a cop read over your crime procedural for silly Hollywood nonsense you didn't realize was false and a cliche.
We do this kind of double-checking over less fraught topics all the time without a problem. Writers just get very tense when they hear the term 'sensitivity reader' because it makes them think of mobs of wokescolds and of their book being secretly irredeemably racist. In reality, a good quality sensitivity reader might tell you that a joke doesn't land because of some cultural detail you missed. They're not there to harass you. They're a professional you hired to help with your book.
Sensitivity readers are fine as long as we treat them as what they are—cultural betas—and not as an official guarantee of Not Problematic And Can Never Offend Anyone.

This is maybe a complicated question but what sources (which for this purpose includes both novels and sourcebooks) would you recommend for learning about drow lore?
For Forgotten Realms drow lore specifically... I haven't read all of it by a long shot! Keep in mind that Menzoberranzan is one of many cities while you read these!! I haven't gathered all information about what different drow cities are Out There, but out of what I've read, I would recommend:
Sourcebooks:
Drow of the Underdark (SECOND EDITION DND, this is the TSR one. You want the one written by Ed Greenwood, NOT the third edition sourcebook of the same name). Some of it is editor mandated (such as prosthetics) but it's still a pretty good source. Should be available on archive.org or floating around on websites, I don't know if you can actually pick it up physically anymore.
Menzoberranzan Box Set (AD&D box set): Available on archive.org if you can't find it elsewhere. No account needed. Explicitly expands on Menzoberranzan-as-trade-hub, more details about the Houses, etc., all things that don't fit in novels.
Underdark (3rd edition supplement) - Play supplement for the Underdark. Expands more on non-Menzoberranzan locations and Underdark adventures and resources.
Out of the Abyss (5e adventure module) - covers a lot of the Underdark, including Menzoberranzan. You get a snapshot of Menzoberranzan in 5e as well as a bunch of other Underdark stuff.
Novels:*
War of the Spider Queen (Dissolution, Insurrection, Condemnation, Extinction, Annihilation, Resurrection): Six books, takes place during an event called the Silence of Lolth. Varied perspectives. Gives different views of various parts of drow society.
Liriel's trilogy (Daughter of the Drow, Tangled Webs, Windwalker): Three books by Elaine Cunningham. Very different protagonist from Drizzt, gives some context and greater fleshing out of the conditions priestesses go through in Menzoberranzan.
Side stories: Rite of Blood (prequel), The Direct Approach (takes place mid-trilogy), Answered Prayers (epilogue). You can find Rite of Blood in Best of the Realms vol 1. Direct Approach and Answered Prayers are in Best of the Realms vol 3, which can be found online in (cough cough) places, I don't think it's in print any longer. Drizzt's books: The character that quite literally started it all in Forgotten Realms, at least as far as drow publishing history goes. If you're buckling in for the marathon: Here is a slideshow of what to expect, with a text transcription.
Here is a reading order.
If you just want a crash course to get basic Menzo lore into your face:
Dark Elf trilogy (Homeland, Exile, Sojourn only if you're invested in Drizzt's story because that's his story of how he gets to the surface). Generations (Timeless, Boundless, Relentless). Generations revisits the Homeland timeline from the view of Jarlaxle and Zaknafein, both characters you'll be introduced to in the Dark Elf trilogy. *There is also Lady Penitent, that follows on from the end of WotSQ. I have read it, but it's not included in my overview because it explicitly addresses drow lore about their origins that as far as I can tell has been retconned as the editions advanced. However, if you are interested in reading it regardless, it is a trilogy with the books Sacrifice of the Widow, Storm of the Dead, and Ascendancy of the Last.
Peripherals:
(insert screaming about polyhedron and dragon magazine, i haven't even begun to go through all that yet, but if you want another example of a 'good drow' in the 2e era that isn't Drizzt, I recommend Polyhedron 97 which you can find here, which gives an example in Dusk, a drow tutor.)
ANYWAY UHH hope this helps a bit lmao. There's so much! And a lot of it is not consistent between editions either!
