Thorns IS boring but I’m obsessed with madame marisha finding out about Cathy and Chris bc there’s not nearly enough of that sort of drama in the rest of the books
If I could change anything about petals it would be to make Julian freak out even more about Cathy and Chris’ weird relationship and also give Cathy and Chris visible whip scars that people reacted to or some other visible reminder of the attic
Agreed, but i will say the drama in seeds was crazy i mean Bart almost chopped cathy for it he just couldnt let it go 😭
Julian couldnt be too mad because he was like damn if cathy was my sister i’d hit too :/
On one hand im glad they didnt have scars bc that makes it easier for them to move on (not that cathy did). But on the other hand i know personally that people tend to downplay your pain if you dont have visible marks. I personally dont scar, but ive had some pretty serious mutilations in my childhood including a third degree burn on 9% of my body. But since i have no scars people tend to rationalize that it wasn’t “that bad” and maybe i exaggerate it. So i can already picture people thinking that chris and cathy simply got spanked and couldnt get over it or something—instead of realizing they had been actually maimed 😭

is garden of shadows worth reading? i'm not that interested in FITA sequels because they seem less dark/gothic and garden looks like a nice return to the gothic vibe of the original but i have some reservations about it possibly being the ghostwriter's work because i have no interest in reading anything under the v.c. andrews name that wasn't actually written by her
I totally understand how you feel. I actually didnt want to read any of the fita sequels after i finished it either. I read the wiki synopsis of Petals and was like nahhh. Now its my second favorite vc andrews book 🤷🏼♀️
I’ll give you some info to consider while making your decision.
GoS is inconsistent and kinda of boring tbh you can tell the ghost writer wasnt super familiar with the series before writing it. So you will get some contradictory information that doesnt quite fit or make sense. So technically it shouldnt count as canon. But i still consider it to be because i enjoyed it enough. Is it gothic? Hmmm. It definitely feels more like soap opera drama most of the time, but there is some crazy shit that goes down in the attic 👀
As for the other sequels; Petals is more drama, romance, slice of life until everything goes balls to the wall insane towards the end. If youre curious at all about what happened with Cory or if Cathy gets revenge on Corrine and Olivia then you should read it. Also something to consider, Fita and Petals were written together before being submitted to the publisher as if it were meant to be one big book then got split in two. So i often recommend people read them together to fully appreciate the story.
Thorns is the book most people find boring, again the end gets crazy, but you dont have to read it. Unless you want to read Seeds of Yesterday which imo is the most gothic book behind Fita. Its basically a home invasion horror story riddled with paranoia and religious psychosis. Most fans love this book a lot.
Lastly, i recommend you dont waste your time with the later books like Secret Diary and the “first corrine” series. The bastardizations and cash grabs that never should have existed.
Ultimately its up to you, if you like fita as it is then you dont need to read the others 🌸

do you think cathy and christopher would've ended up engaging in incest even if christopher sr had never died? i read the book for the first time recently and in the parts before the dad is dead it seems clear he's competing with chris for corrine in the same way corrine was competing with cathy for christopher sr's affection... idk maybe i'm just overthinking it but it feels like the parents were setting the kids up for that kind of thing long before chris sr died
Yay congrats on finishing the book, i hope you enjoyed it 🙏🏻🌸
You’re definitely right about the emotional incest component. That was clear from the beginning and even later in the story with Corrine always turning to Chris jr. for comfort and acceptance. It might be that the Dollanganger family had to remain relatively isolated, keeping everyone at arms length, for the sake of their secret. So they had to meet all their emotional needs amongst themselves.
However, i will say that I don’t think Chris sr. dying was the catalyst for Chris Jr and Cathy to engage in that sort of relationship. I believe it was a combination of loneliness, proximity, and the obsessive paranoia of their grandmother which planted that seed and pushed them into it.
I personally think the Dollangangers would have always been like weirdly close by other family standards, but i dont think Chris and Cathy would have sought to sate their romantic and sexual needs with each other had they had access to other people.

i prefer to think of whitefern as bad fanfiction than sequel to msa how come it lost all the gothic glam and became a mediocre thriller
I’d say most of us here agree with you
Because it was a lazy cash grab written by someone who had no hand in the creation of MSA 🤷🏼♀️

If you like the psychological aspects of the Dollanganger books, I recommend My Dark Vanessa. It chronicles a student-teacher relationship, jumping between the MC’s teenage years and adulthood. The main thread the two share is delving into how much childhood trauma follows the people it affects throughout their lives. (Plus the grooming isn’t romanticized *cough* Paul)
Thanks for the recc!!
It’s been on my tbr for years but i just never feel emotionally stable enough to read it lol maybe i need to just balls up or read it along side a light hearted romcom 😭

I personally think Cathy Dollanganger and Orel Puppington have a lot to bond over.

Someone was nice enough to link me this website which should be helpful for finding movies and other media otherwise difficult to get a hold of. I hope this helps you find Rain!
is there any way to watch the film rain online or impossible?
Ive actually never seen it myself. It doesnt look like its available on any streaming platforms. I also checked Hoopla the library app. You might be out of luck unless someone has a link to a dubious free streaming site lol all my favs got shut down so i dint even have that to offer, im sorry 😢
