Electrical room rubber mat vs. ESD anti-static mat
What is an Electrical room rubber mat? How is it different from ESD anti-static mats?
Do they have similar applications?
If these questions pop into your mind, then this blog is ideal for you! We offer your insights about these mats and how they differ from each other.
An electrical room rubber mat provides electrical safety for the operators dealing with high-voltage applications. It can withstand high voltages and provide electrical insulation. On the other hand, an electrostatic discharge anti-static mat safeguards electronic components and appliances from static electricity discharges. It acts as a protective guard to save sensitive electrical parts from damage.
Now, you might wonder what ESD means!
ESD stands for Electrostatic Discharge which is basically a sudden electricity flow. It takes place between two electrically charged components. It causes dielectric breakdown and short circuits. There is a massive discharge of electricity that damages electrical equipment severely.
Now, an electrical shock proof rubber mat prevents electric shock. It offers a barrier to the flow of excessive current during any system faults. It saves people's lives by deviating the track of current trying to pass through their bodies.
Whereas, an ESD anti static mat dissipates and controls static electricity. It is manufactured with either rubber, polymers, or vinyl. It has grounding to channel the static electricity to the ground. This saves electronic devices from such massive electricity discharge.
An electrical rubber safety mat can be compliant primarily with IEC 61111, ASTM D178, and IS 15652 standards. These standards vary with the geographical regions and their safety standards.
On the other hand, ESD anti-static mats can be compliant with standards like ANSI/ESD S20.20 and IEC 61340-5-1.
You can install an ESD mat on places where there are multiple electronic devices that can be vulnerable to electrostatic discharge. You can find them in repair shops, assembly lines, and work benches. They are able to control and check the electrostatic discharge.
On the other hand, you can install an electrical room rubber mat in any area prone to high-voltage accidents. You can install it in generator and lift rooms having high-voltage machinery. You can install it in near panels and switchboards having high-voltage circuits and applications. However, the electrical mat price depends on the type of insulating mat you are willing to buy. The price depends on the class, thickness, size, and voltage withstanding properties of the insulating mat. You should check the electrical mat price list before purchasing a safety mat.
You might want to check these FAQs!
1. What are the specifications of IS 15652 compliant shock proof rubber mat?
The IS 15652 compliant electrical shock proof rubber mat follows the Indian safety standards. These mats have different classes like Class A, Class B, and Class C. Each class is suitable for different working voltage operations. However, these insulating mats have unique insulating properties along with good resistance against chemicals and weathering. They have flame retardance properties which help them resist the ignition and spread of fire.
2. Where can you use an electrical rubber safety mat?
You can use an electrical rubber mat while operating high-voltage machinery and appliances. It will protect you from any electrical system hazards. You can install electrical mats in control rooms, panels, and lift rooms. You can also use them near switchboards, HVAC systems, and transformer rooms.
3. How to install an insulating mat?
You should install an insulating mat very carefully. Follow these steps:
Clean the floor properly where you will install the mat.
Make sure to align the mats and cover the whole working area.
Use a brush to apply adhesive on the surface of the floor and back of the electrical mat.
Apply rollers to make sure there are no uneven surfaces.
Wait for it to dry completely before using it.
Thus, an insulating mast and ESD anti static mat have different intent of applications. You should use an electrical rubber mat to protect yourself from high-voltage power hazards. On the other hand, you can use ESD mats to protect appliances and devices from static electricity. Choose your mat wisely according to your needs!

Antistatic Shoes Market: Structure and Overview of Key Market Forces Propelling Market
The most important property of safety shoes is its ability to resist electric current. Two of the most important things that are to be considered while purchasing such shoes are, how efficient are the shoes at the prevention of electrostatic charging by pushing it out quickly and secondly, if the shoes are shock resistant. It is very important for any person to wear shoes that resist electric current if he works with electricity, because such shoes minimize the level of electricity that enters the body.
Electrical resistance offered by antistatic shoes are between 0.1 and 1000 MegaOhm (MΩ), as measured according to EN 20344: 2011 5 10. Antistatic shoes provide the user with protection against electric shocks and can be worn in various works scenarios.
Electrical resistance offered by electrostatic dissipative shoes are between 0.1 and 100 (MΩ), measured according to BS EN 61340-4-3: 2002 (IEC 61340-4-3:2001). ESD or electrostatic dissipative shoes therefore guarantee a very low electrical resistance.

IEC New Release: IEC TR 61340-5-2 Electrostatics – Protection of electronic devices from electrostatic phenomena
New Post has been published on https://piek.international/iec-61340-5-2-electrostatics-protection-electronic-devices-electrostatic-phenomena/
IEC New Release: IEC TR 61340-5-2 Electrostatics – Protection of electronic devices from electrostatic phenomena
IEC TR 61340-5-2:2018, which has been developed to support IEC 61340-5-1, applies to activities that: manufacture, process, assemble, install, package, label, service, test, inspect, transport or otherwise handle electrical or electronic parts, assemblies and equipment with withstand voltages greater than or equal to 100 V HBM, 200 V CDM and 35 V for isolated conductors. Additional control elements or adjusted limits can be applicable for ESDS with lower withstand voltages. This second edition of IEC TR 61340-5-2 has been modified to provide guidance for users of IEC 61340-5-1:2016. The text has been arranged to follow the requirements of IEC 61340‑5‑1:2016 as closely as possible as well as providing specific guidance on each of the requirements of IEC 61340-5-1:2016.
IEC New Release: IEC TR 61340-5-2 Electrostatics – Protection of electronic devices from electrostatic phenomena
This user guide has been produced for individuals and organizations that are faced with controlling electrostatic discharge (ESD). It provides guidance that can be used for developing, implementing and monitoring an electrostatic discharge control program in accordance with IEC 61340-5-1.
Avoid a discharge from any charged, conductive object (personnel, equipment) into the sensitive device: It is preferred that all conductors that may come into contact with ESDS including personnel, are bonded or electrically connected to a known ground or contrived ground (as on shipboard or on aircraft). This attachment creates an equipotential balance between all items and personnel. Electrostatic protection can be maintained at a potential different from “zero” voltage ground potential, as long as all items in the system are at the same potential. If a conductor that cannot be grounded (e.g. isolated conductor) comes into contact with an ESDS, the ESD risk should be evaluated and if necessary mitigated

ESD CONTROL IN AUTOMOTIVE MANUFACTURING
With the automotive industry quickly and increasingly adapting to more and more advanced electronic technology, the need for proper ESD protection grows more critical.
Electrostatic (ESD) damage is one of the biggest threats to safety and productivity for automotive manufacturers. Every piece of electrical/electronic equipment has the potential to contribute to the occurrence of ESD. It is also most susceptible to the damage caused by ESD.
Why ESD control is important for electronics-related industries
Today vehicles of all types are packed with electrical/electronic parts and systems. Protecting electronic devices and components that are sensitive to electrostatic discharge (ESD) is very important in manufacturing processes or environments. ESD control is needed to prevent damage from the electrical charges that accumulate during critical manufacturing processes.
Static charge can be generated and built up by simply walking across a floor or by standing up after sitting a while. Assembly lines, robotic production equipment, hand tools & devices, metal surfaces, even clothing can cause ESD buildup. Workers too can spark a reaction that causes a significant ESD event.
If the discharge is powerful, the damage to the electronic component will be visible. However, latent failures can occur at much lower voltage ranges and these are more difficult to detect. It is estimated that latent failure in electronic devices is responsible for 90% of all failures in those devices, and costs the industry billions every year.
Studies of damage to components in electronic devices, related to ESD events, estimate the cost of damage according to when the event is detected. If the damage is discovered at the point of assembly, the cost is one times the cost of assembly and labour. But if damage is discovered during QC testing, the cost is ten times that of assembly and labour. And if the damage is discovered once the device reaches the customer, the cost is100 times the cost of assembly and labour. (Source of cost estimates: Cisco Systems, Inc.)
How to control ESD in automotive manufacturing
Because static build-up and discharge can cause injury to human life and damage to property, components and finished products, it’s important for automotive industry to adopt a comprehensive ESD control programme. One that takes into consideration the ESD environment as a whole, including workstations, clothing, flooring, packaging materials, etc.
Such a programme helps to set up ESD Protected Areas (EPAs) for the protection of manufacturing areas or workstations. The EPA can be equipped with ESD-resistant products such as ESD workbenches, industrial furniture, ESD chairs &stools, trolleys, ESD storage racks, etc. Here, workers can be dressed in appropriate clothing, with conductive straps, grounded wristbands, etc. to dissipate ESD safely.

TACKLING ESD PROBLEMS IN SEMICONDUCTOR MANUFACTURING
Semiconductors or chips/ICs (integrated circuits) are the heart and soul of alldigital products. Semiconductors were required by a large number of industries, including telecommunications, information technology, industrial machinery and automation, medical electronics, automobile, engineering, power and solar photovoltaic, defence and aerospace, consumer electronics, and appliances.
Semiconductors have been a key enabler in the advancement of electronics for the past 50 years and will continue to play an even greater role with the introduction of new technologies and applications, such as internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence, 5G, smart cars, smart factories, date centres, robotics, etc.
While the Indian electronics industry is growing in leaps and boundsencouraged by government policies and international investment, it still relies heavily on imports of semiconductors. However, before a chip, such as microprocessor chip or mobile communication chip, is designed, it goes through acomplicated development process using FPGAs and similar prototype methods to perfect the design as perstated specifications. Once the prototype chips are delivered by the labs, they undergo intense laboratory testingto thoroughly check the end product in all its variety of usages.
Semiconductor companies in India all have elaborate ESD laboratories to test the chips supplied to them. And they all have to overcome the challenges and risks of ESD.
The problems caused by electrostatic charge in semiconductor design, manufacturing and testing are well known. They make it more difficult to maintain high levels of product quality and yield. It is estimated that ESD may be responsible for up to a third of manufacturing product losses.
How to control ESD during manufacturing
There are five broad areas that semiconductor and PCB manufacturers concentrate on to protect sensitive components from ESD contamination during manufacturing:
1. Establish ESD Protected Areas (EPAs) with the correct furniture, tools, equipment, etc. to minimise generation of static electricity.
2. Identify sensitive components and handle them appropriately.
3. Handle components as per documented handling procedures - only within EPAs (ESD Protected Areas) of the manufacturing floor by assembly technicians who are trained and prepared for working with these parts.
4. Reduce Electrostatic charge generation by reducing and eliminating static generating processes, keeping processes and materials at the same electrostatic potential, and by providing appropriate ground paths to reduce charge generation and accumulation.
5. Follow all possible methods to dissipate ESD - using anti-static workstations, ESD chairs, other ESD-safe furniture, flooring and floor mats, ESD-safe tools, clothing, gloves and accessories.
How Messung can help
Messung Workplace Technology offers a complete range of ESD products for EPAs in the semiconductor manufacturing and other industries. Messung Workplace Technology is one of India’s leading ESD products manufacturers.Under its 'Navonmesh - Make in India initiative', Messung offers the AFM-PLUS range of indigenously designed and manufactured ESD workplace products that offer reliable ESD protection as per IEC 61340-5-1.
Messung has its own design and manufacturing facilities with the latest international machines for aluminum and wood cutting, testing facilities, etc. Messung can provide customised solutions for industrial ESD workstations, ESD tables, ESD trolleys, ESD storage racks, drawer cabinets and cupboards. Using the latest volume ESD technology, Messung ensures all its products provide durable ESD protection as per global standards.
Messung also offers a range of ESD task chairs & stools in standard and high versions. These ergonomic seating solutions come in three options: Thermoplastic PU Integral Foam, Synthetic Leather and Fabric.
About Volume ESD
Volume ESD makes the entire worktop or storage shelves conductive with dissipative lamination on both the sides of the workstation. The properties for discharging the charge are uniformly present throughout the volume of the material as compared to its presence only on the contact surface in traditional technology.
This technology guarantees lifetime fail-safe ESD properties of the product which means that the chances of ESD failure are negligible; thus helping customers to save costs in repairs, warranties and replacements of products.
Moreover, Messung's ESD workbenches, ESD Chairs and ESD storage racks are tested as per IEC 61340-5-1 safety standards, which are mandatory for all international quality Electronics manufacturing and R&D facilities.
More about Messung’s ESD chairs
Messung’s ESD task chairs and stools are specifically designed for use in electrical and electronics industry. They are proven to minimise environmental pollutants in cleanroom applications too.
Some of the tasks associated with ESD areas call for elevated seating positions or require workers to stand for long periods or to alternate between standing up and sitting down. As a result, their bodies are often subjected to a great deal of physical stress. Messung’s high ESD chairs and stools with footrests support the human body and relieve physical stress. Also called task chairs, they have pneumatic seats that adjust to an optimal working height.
As the leading ESD chairs manufacturer in Pune, Messung‘s products are in accordance with the European EN 61340-5-1 standards for conductivity. Messung’s ESD chairs with armrests and stools are builtof robust metal frames with non-conductive materials, static-free fabric and static free casters/glides, to deliver reliable ESD protection and long service life.
They also ensure ergonomic seating and support for worker productivity and comfort. The adjustable conductive backrests (for chairs) and smooth gas lift height adjustment make Messung ESD task chairs and ESD-safe industrial metal stools a must-have for the electronics industry.
Conclusion
Electrostatic attraction increases contamination of critical product and equipment surfaces causing defects and increasing maintenance costs. ESD damages semiconductorsand also produces unwanted electrical signals that interfere with the operation of production equipment. These problems occur throughout the semiconductor process, including silicon wafer manufacturing, photomask manufacturing, front-end device manufacturing, and back-endassembly, packaging and test. Many of these static problemspersist through the entire use cycle of the semiconductor device. Similar problems occur in the manufacture of disk drives,flat-panel displays, and medical electronic devices.
Messung’s industrial worktables, ESD tables, ESD trolleys, ESD lab tables with drawers, ESD racks and pedestals, ESD chairs and stools are built to enhance safety, ergonomics and productivityin ESD workplaces. Manufactured under Messung’s 'Navonmesh - Make in India initiative', they are the preferred choice for customers looking for world-class, customised products at a competitive price.
