My TEFL Journey In a nutshell
Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Almighty, in the 2nd last year (2021), I have passed the 198 hours Level 5 TEFL certification course (168 guided hours + Teaching English online 30 hours) from The TEFL Academy. For those, who might want to know, Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) involves teaching English abroad or online where English is not the primary language. TEFL educators can work for international and global schools, foreign companies, international organizations and associations, and internationally recognized universities, just to name a few. You can read more about my adventures in Fahadventure.
I have been thinking about doing this since 2018, just after my Graduation from the Institute of Business Administration, Dhaka University (IBA, DU), Bangladesh, but could not really focus much as I got involved in corporate culture, after joining an event management company, namely Asiatic Experiential Marketing Limited. Later on, in May,2019, I joined a locally reputed bank, BRAC Bank where I continued to work for two and a half years. In the meantime, the overall lockdown phases during 2020 and 2021 finally came as a blessing among all those office workloads, few trips and some personal hassles which motivated me once again to work from home and pursue my dreams. This certificate is just like a passport to travel the world while I'll start working on attaining the visa i.e jobs abroad once it reopens. For now, I am exploring the online possibilities to start with. Check out the vacancies for better exploration.
Just after leaving the job of my previous organization, BRAC Bank, I got the opportunity to join a global platform within few months, named as "Native Camp" where my everyday work nowadays involves teaching and talking people online, mostly from China, Japan & Taiwan and I can't even explain how happy I am right now to have those sessions and exchange our thoughts with fun while doing so. I am also an avid learner and traveler with interest in knowing cultures and norms from all around the globe. I have worked for a very short time in this period with Lingua Roma, a global teaching company where I had to work with South Africans, Russians, French, Kenyans etc. Apart from that, while traveling in various parts of India and Thailand, I resided in the local hostels and houses to mingle with mixed races and know more about them. You can have a look at my teaching profile.
Being a TEFL tutor is a great way to build transferable skills, like communication, creativity, adaptability, critical thinking, problem solving, and leadership etc. It's been a tiring journey with lots of obstacles since I didn't know who to connect with for suggestions; specially anyone from my country. So, I had to look for international blogs, knock random people and gain idea on this. I would humbly request to expand my knowledge if anyone wants to know & explore this beautiful world together. I'll be writing other detailed posts about my journey and other tefl course online, tefl jobs in the coming days. For now, you can look the official website if it fits your budget. Please keep me in your prayers so that I can smoothly advance towards my dream journey, not just by sitting at a corner of the office. Thank you all. Soooo excited! 🤩

Villain Deku Au
Autor: Varios artistas exponentes
The Hero Lover AU
Autor: http://agileo-101.tumblr.com
All Might se mantiene igual.

CIVIL SERVICE SUB PROFESSIONAL PASSER (PART 1)
After six years of being an employee from private sector, Alia decided to climb up herself on the next step of the ladder. LOL.
Last December 2018, nag-register ako sa CSC office sa Trece for sub-professioonal. I was trying my luck before, because unfortunately, I failed the professional on my first take last 2017 and I wasn’t able to take my second application last 2018 because we were scheduled to be audited by our certifying body.
My former colleague told me na dapat, hindi professional ang i-take ko kasi nga raw, mahirap. So, he advised me to choose the sub-pro kasi ganoon din naman daw ang ticket. Basta may eligibility ka, that means, you can have the opportunity to work on public sector.
And then, ayun nga, I filed my application without even telling my officemates. Before I filed, I prayed to God and to the Lord na sana, one take lang. Pagkatapos noon, I reviewed a lot. Mabuti na nga lang din at natapos ko nang gawin that time ang Tricked and s-in-set-aside ko muna ang Selfless. Paunti-unti lang din ang update ko noon.
Every early in the morning, I always got up just to review myself. Unlike in the pro level na masyadong complex ang things to review, sa sub-pro, medyo chill lang. Haha. I didn’t focus myself to review alot in grammar pero nag-te-take ako ng chill quizzes sa Merriam (the app was really helpful, swear). I focused more on numerical part kasi expected ko nang mahirap ang math, huhu. Then, I reviewed alot din sa clerical ability. Lately ko lang nalaman na you don’t have to really focus on that part kasi may instruction naman sa booklet para sa pag-o-organize ng words. At no’ng nag-take ako, oo nga. Haha.
The materials I used in reviewing were the following:
Haha. Kapag sa part na ng General Information, Verbal at Numerical Questions, kinukuha ko ang questions then I put the answer afterwards. Mas madali ko siyang na-re-review kapag ganoon. Hehe.
* Team Lyqa - This person is a huge motivational speaker slash teacher slash mentor slash tutor, lahat na. LOL. I learned a lot from her, swear. Her techniques are so understandable, kasi, she uses so many ways to chunk the information into simplest ones. Kada video niya na may kinalaman sa sub-pro and lalo na sa grammar, dina-download ko. Unfortunately, those videos got deleted here in my PC. Sayang din iyon.
* Google - You have to thank him so much kasi accessible masyado si Google ngayon. Haha. From the pdf of 1987 Phil Consti down to SVA and such, mapapa-thank you, Google, ka na lang talaga.
* Facebook Groups for CSC - Malaking tulong din sila especially if you want advice from them. Lalo na sa mga passer. They were also giving ways on how to solve mathematics, quizzes for word and grammar, etc. Diyan ako minsan tambay kapag breaktime namin. Hehe.
Haha. I put here all my learning and binabalikan ko siya every now and then kasi nga, sa takot kong baka makalimot ako.
So, last March 17, 2019, I went to Bayanan Elementary School in Bacoor, Cavite to take the examination. I was damned nervous. Haha. I chose not to review the learnings I gained kasi nga, baka, makalimutan ako. May tendency kasi ako minsan na gano’n. Depende sa mood.
We took the examination for about three hours almost, if my memories served me right. Imagine how I compressed myself to answer all of the questions. LOL. Naalala ko lang din kasi iyong turo sa akin ni Ma’am My na you have to focus on the easiest questions and leave the difficult ones for the meantime. Kung no’ng una, hindi ko siya ginawa, this time, talagang ginawa ko na. As usual, nagtagal talaga ako sa math. I was damned running out of time so I hurriedly answered all the math questions. My piece of advice for myself that time, kahit na hindi ko alam ang iba basta h’wag lang ang rules ng linshak na SVA kasi nga just like the lesson I learned from professional examination, doon mainly focused ang questions lalo na kapag grammar error. LOL.
Doon naman sa clerical, may instruction nga talaga kung paano aayusin ang jumbled words so I just followed it. Hahaha.
When I finished taking-up the examination, I looked for a church nearby because I really want to pray for Him and ask for his glory and guidance.
Then, I waited for 45 days for the releasing of passers.
I hurriedly went to the site and checked my name if it’s included in the list. HAHAHA.
The moment I saw my name included, my heart leaped and beat fast! Haha. Whenever I remember it, napapangiti na lang ako. Hehe.
I told my parents about it afterwards. Doon na ako naka-relax. Iba talaga ang prayers. Iba talaga ang powers ni Lord. Iba talaga.
Because I passed it in one take only. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, God. <3
PS. May part 2 pa `to. Bukas na lang. Haha.

Quote
Ricky Lee, 2019 Graduation Speech with Communications and Arts & Letters graduates of PUP.
His words pulled a lot of heartstrings, and stirred the best of hopes from everyone in the audience. I was enraptured the whole time, but I was also left thinking, what more could I do to help others move forward?
***
Ricky Lee’s speech transcript is right here as a constant reminder to dream, find hope, and fight even as the embers of light fade, and the coldest of the winds envelope us in fear of the unknown.
Tatlong beses akong nag-apply. Tatlong beses akong na-reject.
Working student ako all throughout college. You have to be resourceful. You have to work hard.
Hayaan mo sila. Just keep working hard.
You are never worthless. Just be yourself.
Bata pa ay may inferiority complex na ako. Maaga akong naulila, sakitin, clumsy at makakalimutin, walang sense of direction. At ang sagot ni Chanda do'n, ‘Oo nga, Ricky, I won't be surprised kung gawin mo 'yun!’ Kasi up to now I make that mistake. I enter the wrong car.
So may inferiority complex ako bata pa.
Lumaki akong laging gano'n. Kaya ang ginawa ko nagsikap ako. Nag-aral akong mabuti para maging First honor ako mula Grade 1 hanggang Fourth Year.
But in the end I realized it was all worth it.
Lagi nila akong tinatanong.
Kaya ngayon sa pagtatapos n'yo, go out, celebrate, work hard para makompleto ang silya, make mistakes, makisangkot ka, vote wisely. Ipaglaban mo ang mga karapatan mo, write a story, hug your parents. So hug your parents, listen to somebody else's heartbeat, join a rally, donate to a cause, support your friend's dream, listen to the silence in the midst of chaos, persevere.
Congratulations!

RareJob: Tips for passing the Demo Lesson Part 2
It was my day off and I did some late spring cleaning and I found an old notebook that had my notes during the time I conducted my demo lesson and it had a few helpful tips.
It’s as important to pass the test call and not just the demo lesson. Because if you fail the test call, you will have to reschedule. According to my notes, I almost failed my test call because I had an issue with my microphone.

According to my notes, I got lucky because my RareJob evaluator was actually nice. She had a very friendly voice but she maintained a professional tone for the entire demo lesson. I do remember that and I also remembered part of why I was so nervous.
Nag research rin kasi ako online for tips during my application process. Puro lang daw mga negative comments during the lesson kaya same lang naging performance nila nung pangalawang demo lesson or role play.
Before the lesson role play, may short introduction muna. She asked me to describe myself, why I want to teach and etc. Then we proceeded with the 1strole play.
Nerve-wracking talaga and “aligaga” pa ako nun! Na mention ko na before na sablay yung 1st lesson ko so my evaluator had a lot of feedback with my performance. Which I listened to and used to improve my performance for the 2nd lesson.
Note: Your demo lesson evaluator and “student” are the same person. During the demo, he/she will pretend to be a Japanese student. Sometimes he/she might role play as a shy beginner student or an intermediate office worker. It depends so it’s best to prepare yourselves.
o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o
Establish rapport or connection
Use the introduction to do this. Don’t just state your name then move on with the lesson! Mention your hobbies and interests. Same with the student. if she only tells you her name, ask her if she has any hobbies and interest and try to sound interested!
Listen to the student
After the student answers the exercise questions, ask her follow-up questions related to her answer. This shows that you’re listening and you’re interested.
Don’t skip questions!
Never skip any exercise questions. Ask all the questions in the lesson material. If the student doesn’t know how to answer or if she’s having a hard time in understanding the question then you have to explain it in simpler terms.
Make the demo lesson student-centered
If you like to talk a lot, you have to refrain during the demo. Because in actual RareJob classes, you will encounter students who love to talk. And some of those students don’t like to be interrupted because they sign up for classes so they can practice their communication skills and they would appreciate it if someone will listen and only correct them during the feedback near the end of class.
Apply the 70/30 talk ratio. Give the student (70%) more opportunity to speak up.
Just click the image to sign up for RareJob :)
Take note of the time!
It’s okay if you extend the allotted time for each segment (ex. long introduction) just as long as you end with a wrap-up and feedback!
Utilize the chat box!
If you correct the student’s sentence, do it verbally after you type it in the chat box.
Ex:
You said: My hobby is traveling and playing basketball.
Correct: My hobbies *are* traveling and playing basketball.
Also do this if you introduce a new word, provide the meaning and sample sentence.
Ex:
Benevolent - kind and helpful
Ex: Giving to charity is a benevolent deed.
Typing everything in the chat box is very important because it’s useful for the student. Actual RareJob students use them to study and review after classes.
No dead air!
This is very important! Dead air or long silences is probably one of the reason a lot of applicants fail. There should be no silence (for at least no more than 5 seconds) during the entire lesson. An actual RareJob class is only 25 minute per lesson slot. So it is very important to maximize the time. Every second counts!
o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o
When the time is up for your 1st lesson or role play, the evaluator will immediately give you his/her feedback. Use this break to focus and listen well! Listen to everything your evaluator is saying! Forget how nervous you feel and prepare yourself instead!
If you can, write down notes! Especially the areas you need to improve on according to the feedback.
In my case, I was correcting the student too much instead of listening to her answers. That resulted in me forgetting the time limit and I wasn’t able to fully follow the lesson flow (no wrap-up or feedback!).
I also wasn’t able to utilize the chat box. I was able to provide sample sentences but I didn’t type it in the chat box.
I was really nervous during the 1st role play and I was aware that I performed terribly so I focused and applied the feedback I got for the 2nd role play.
Dapat gamitin niyo yung 2nd demo lesson to improve your performance kasi yun yung 2nd and last chance niyo. Dun makikita nung evaluator kung nakikinig ba kayo sa instructions kasi yung mga RareJob lesson materials puno ng instructions on how to conduct each and every exercise portion of a specific material.
Before joining RareJob, I didn’t have any professional teaching experience whatsoever. But, I focused, I prepared and I did my best. And I guess I also got lucky! It’s almost 2 years since I’ve been teaching with RareJob and it has been a really great experience so far. The pay is okay (it could be better!) but teaching and learning with my students is really fun and surprisingly really fulfilling as well.
Ang saya-saya pag nakikita mo kung gaano nag improve yung students mo especially if within a short amount of time and pag ini-express nila kung gaano sila ka-grateful sayo dahil you helped them during the learning process.
So, I hope the tips I gave will help you pass the demo lesson and become a RareJob tutor like me.
