The companies can't endure additional strikes. Netflix's "new" section is a throwback to retro content; CEOs got a compensation cut due to shareholder-imposed pay reductions. Iger and Disney face multiple lawsuits from various investor groups. An "activist" shareholder, Nelson Peltz, seeks to dismantle Disney. These companies and CEOs hurt themselves and us, they need our work, badly. And will try hard to divide us to get it for nothing.
IATSE and Teamsters can bring home to the CEOs this everlasting truth: employees deserve a fair day's pay for a fair day's work in safe, stable working conditions. "Alone we beg, together we bargain" isn't just for individual people: it means unions working together succeed together. This year we set the tone, next year we bring it home.

just in case anyone missed this in the news or maybe not in the loop, Disney is currently refusing to meet with or acknowledge the newly formed animation production workers union that just voted to join IASTE and become an official part of TAG, the animators and animation artists guild
production workers across all studios are currently voting to be recognized for their hard work and invaluable skill at keeping these productions running, but studios are refusing to meet with them to let them negotiate deals or even exist
as someone who works in animation as a designer i know i wouldn't be able to do my job at all without any of my production workers. they are the incredibly hard working people who oversee pretty much everything in animation. they make sure everything is running on time, that schedules are being followed, they have to know pretty much every single word of the scripts and beats from the storyboards to make sure nothing is missed, and most importantly, they make sure artists are being taken care of and not overworked. they really are the unsung heroes of the animation world
production workers are also by far the most exploited workers in animation currently. they make about a fraction of what artists make for just as much work put in, and currently have no agreement for health coverage or other benefits that artists protected by the union are guaranteed
BUT! there is some good news. right now there's a petition on IATSE's website that has over 80,000 signatures currently addressed to disney leadership to do the right thing and meet with this new union and recognized their vote to form. it still needs roughly 21,000 signatures and only takes a minute to sign! anyone with a zip or postal code can sign, meaning both US and Canadian residents can sign and help this union get the deal it deserves!!

Production workers at Walt Disney Animation Studios have voted to unionize under the Animation Guild, the union announced Wednesday on X. Production coordinators, managers and supervisors at Disney Animation are poised to be represented by Local 839 IATSE, a branch of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees. Sixty-three of the 68 workers who participated in the election voted in favor of union representation, according to the National Labor Relations Board. “Congratulations to the production workers at Disney Feature Animation!” the Animation Guild posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “With 96% voter turnout, 93% voted yes!!! Let’s celebrate!”

with 2 "nick rocks" appearances and a shout-out on "clarissa explains it all", it does seem the most appropriate station for them. here's what they look like uncrusted.

SAG-AFTRA, Teamsters, IATSE, Writers Guild Issue Joint Statement in Solidarity with Directors Guild of America
May 31, 2023
Los Angeles, CA — As the Directors Guild of America’s negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) enter their final scheduled week, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), the Teamsters, Hollywood Basic Crafts (Teamsters Local 399, IBEW Local 40, LiUNA! Local 724, OPCMIA Local 755 and UA Local 78), the Writers Guild of America East (WGAE), the Writers Guild of America West (WGAW), and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) stand alongside our sisters, brothers, and kin in the DGA in their pursuit of a fair contract.
We believe in a Hollywood where every worker is valued and their contributions recognized, whether their labor is on or off screen. A fair contract for directors does not benefit just a select few; it uplifts every worker in the film and television industry and acknowledges the interconnected nature of our work. We call on the AMPTP to immediately negotiate a fair agreement that addresses the Directors Guild of America’s unique priorities in good faith.
As eyes around the world again turn towards the negotiation table, we send a clear message to the AMPTP: Our solidarity is not to be underestimated. The Hollywood guilds and unions stand united, and we stand strong.
In solidarity,
Matthew D. Loeb International President, IATSE
Lindsay Dougherty Motion Picture Division Director & Western Region Vice President, Teamsters Hollywood Basic Crafts, Chairperson
Duncan Crabtree-Ireland National Executive Director and Chief Negotiator, SAG-AFTRA
Michael Winship President, Writers Guild of America, East
Meredith Stiehm President, Writers Guild of America West

IATSE has been making a concerted effort to organize the largely non-union VFX space for some time, and notched a few high-profile victories in the past year. This past fall, in-house VFX staffers at Marvel and Walt Disney Pictures voted unanimously to unionize, along with DNEG workers in British Columbia. IATSE hopes to form a new, national local for VFX artists that would work under the same Basic Agreement as workers at Locals such as 600 (International Cinematographers Guild), 700 (Motion Picture Editors Guild) and 800 (Art Directors Guild). That three-year agreement expires in 2024 and negotiations for a new contract are expected to begin in March.

Oscars 2024 & political issues
I get cheesy about the Oscars.
At its best, this is a celebration of humanity, of people sharing their artistic vision with the world, of creating from the heart of what they care about, of reflecting social and ethical crises through the medium of movies, be they documentary, historical fiction, or fantasy.
--In the monologue, Jimmy Kimmel offered support and solidarity to the members of IATSE, the union representing many crew members, which is currently in contract negotiations that are expected to be difficult. IATSE was a key ally to the writers and actors during their 2023 strikes.
--The In Memoriam segment began with a clip from last year's winning documentary "Nalavny" - "the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for the good people to do nothing."
--Osage Nation member & songwriter Scott George says about their performance "We're hoping you see us as a people that have survived and that are able to hold on to what we have."
--Cillian Murphy dedicated his Oppenheimer Oscar to "the peacemakers everywhere."
--Nimona director Troy Quane wore a Protect Trans Kids pin.
--Oscar speeches don't often open with the words, "I wish I'd never made this film." Mstyslav Chrernov accepted Ukraine's first ever Oscar and closed his speech with the words "Slava Ukraini - Glory to Ukraine."
--Zone of Interest filmmaker Jonathan Glazer's speech reflected themes from his movie: "All our choices were made to reflect and confront us in the present, Not to say 'look what they did then'; rather, 'look what we do now.' Our film shows where dehumanization leads at its worst.
Right now, we stand here as men who refute their Jewishness and a Holocaust being hijacked by an occupation which has led to conflict for so many innocent people, whether the victims of October the seventh in Israel, or the ongoing attack on Gaza. How do we resist?"
--attendees from Mark Ruffalo to Billie Eillish to Ava DuVernay wore a red&black pin to show their support for a ceasefire in Gaza
--protestors calling for an immediate ceasefire closed a major intersection and blocked traffic near the Dolby Theatre, delaying the award show — and forcing an acknowledgment of the issues the protest centered on.

hi there! as an industry [film/tv] professional, i have to say, it's insane things have lasted this long. at any point, the AMPTP could have decided to negotiate with us in a good faith position, and yet they've decided that is not a prudent business choice. it's put hundreds of thousands of below the line people like me in the place of "is living in LA worth it?" because so many of us need to scrape together the barest amount of money to sustain ourselves here. i'm lucky, i have an SO who loves me enough to let me stay here even though i haven't had rent money in four months, but not every one of us is as lucky. the entertainment industry is hemorrhaging, and i doubt all of us will survive this. but never forget, our real enemies are the over payed CEOs on the top of our corporate ladders. they refuse to give us a fair share, they refuse to even negotiate what looks like a fair share. these people are not your friends. when they die, we will all be better off. none of the guilds wanted this. it is entirely on the laps of the greedy mother fucking pieces of shit who cornered us into this. and I hope they die soon.
