Mandy, Indiana — i’ve seen a way (Fire Talk)
youtube
There are plenty of different ways for a record to be overwhelming. We sometimes talk of great pop music as undeniable, as if solid enough craft has its own kind of inexorability. There is of course pure sonic and/or conceptual extremity (heck, there’s a whole book on that if you’re interested), and in even more subjective waters we can each find our personal limits when it comes to emotional intensity. Mandy, Indiana have made an LP that has some familiarity with most of those realms, but also shows off one other particular kind of overwhelming. i’ve seen a way can seem at first both thorny and kaleidoscopic in construction, a discombobulating whirl of a record. But it has a sneaky way of reconfiguring your expectations, so that even listeners who don’t know quite what to make of it may find it evolving from patchwork to singular statement even as they’re listening.
For Anglophones, at least, there’s one immediate barrier here; although the quartet formed in Manchester, vocalist Valentine Caulfield sings entirely in her native French. The kinetic and sonic force of her vocals are present regardless of linguistic background, but translating turns up everything from a list of things men have said to her about her body (the fierce “Drag [Crashed]”) to… instructions for video game players (the stiff robo-grooves of “Injury Detail”). The rest of the band (Alex Macdougall on drums, Simon Catling on synths, Scott Fair on guitar and production) match her range and radical force. If you want to start tracking down rough genre referents for i’ve seen a way you’ll be grabbing pieces from post-punk, synthwave, industrial, noise, and more and spotwelding them together, less worried about achieving seamlessness and instead taking pride in the visible joins. Most bands don’t display the kind of range found here, for example from the seesawing, shuddering blare of “Peach Fuzz” to the fervid steamcloud ambience of “(ノ>ω<)ノ :。·:*:·゚’★,。·:*:♪·゚’☆ (Crystal Aura Redux),” let alone sequence those examples next to each other.
At times, like when the menacing, cavernous “2 Stripe” evokes a half-dub of Massive Attack’s Mezzanine or when the brief “Mosaick” overdrives vocals, cymbals, and various grinding noises into the red, it’s easy to feel in the moment like you’ve gotten a bead on what Mandy, Indiana “does.” But then they immediately pivot somewhere you might not have immediately expected (to the placid feedback howls of “Iron Maiden” and the cyberpunk motorway music of “The Driving Rain (18),” respectively). And miraculously enough these shifts always feel like they make sense, even like they’re building to something. Mandy, Indiana are still a pretty young band; 2021’s … EP was a thrilling and promising debut, and i’ve seen a way is a lot more than that. If they keep improving (and expanding) at this rate, the prospect of what that might do is almost a little scary. Overwhelming, even.

i'll let phie-san say it:
#the vids i've seen on tiktok picking at her immediately get a block...#bitter otaku sitting in their socks in their mom's basement feeling threatened/enraged by a hot successful black woman outnerding them-core#also this kind of criticism is so demoralising and damaging to people who are trying to learn another language#also. accents are NORMAL and not a bad thing#i don't think that the end goal of picking up a new language necessarily has to be sounding native#and i know sometimes the way japanese people react like SUGOIII? *W* when a foreigner says like one (1) word in japanese is joked about#but like... genuinely... i always love when someone clearly has made an effort and took the time to learn some of the language#anyway she can step on those haters <3#also like. it’s just some lines in a song people need to relax…#megan thee stallion#autoplay warning#japan#japanese#language#mamushi

if there's one thing this last episode has affirmed for me about Alastor it's that he FUCKING HATES being reminded that he's not the most powerful creature in hell.
Like, he hates being ignored by Carmilla when she says she doesn't care why he was gone
He hates Lucifer ON SIGHT
He threatens to KILL Husk when he dares to mention that Alastor is working for someone more powerful than him
and now this.
Alastor freaking out because he almost died. Something almost killed him. He can fucking die. There is something more powerful than him out there. And it's not something he can ignore or brush off because it almost killed him.
Alastor hates the reminder that he's not as powerful as he tells people he is. He isn't indestructible, he isn't invincible. And he fucking hates that.
#hazbin hotel#hazbin hotel spoilers#al talks about things#OUUGH HE'S MAKIN ME INSANE#he isn't blorbo yet#but he could be#anyway I've seen people say that he's freaking out because he's realizing he maybe does care#No???? that's not it???#He's scared because he just got the shit beat out of him by an angel???#He got reminded that there are things out there that are more powerful than him?#that's why he immediately jumps to trying to figure out a way out of his deal#because he wants to get out from under whoever is more powerful than him!!!#hazbin hotel alastor#hazbin alastor

followers who have had/are looking to get top surgery!!! i highly recommend thinking about scar mobilization. many times a scar after soft tissue surgery will feel "stiff" or "stuck." this is because in scar tissue, the soft tissue layers partially fuse together:
luckily this can be reversed at least partially most of the time through massage. once the wound is completely scarred over, you can begin to gently but firmly massage across the scar with 2-3 fingers in up and down, side to side, and clockwise/counterclockwise circular motions (more repetitions than i'm doing here), you can also gently pull the scar if it's not painful:
[video id: me briefly demonstrating on my scars how to do the scar massage. i place two fingers directly on top of the scar tissue and massage with light pressure in motions described above. /end id]
start with very light pressure and increase as time goes on. this should never be painful, only sometimes feeling that "tight" feeling. again, the wound must be COMPLETELY scarred over, no scabs whatsoever. but you can start massaging as soon as that happens.
you can do these as often as you like as long as it's not painful, but once or twice a day for maybe 5 minutes is definitely enough
#this is my psa bc i've seen people talk about being annoyed at the feeling of tightness#and there IS a way to fix that and it's pretty easy#ccrow.txt

Today my therapist introduced me to a concept surrounding disability that she called "hLep".
[plain-text version of this post can be found under the cut]
Which is when you - in this case, you are a disabled person - ask someone for help ("I can't drink almond milk so can you get me some whole milk?", or "Please call Donna and ask her to pick up the car for me."), and they say yes, and then they do something that is not what you asked for but is what they think you should have asked for ("I know you said you wanted whole, but I got you skim milk because it's better for you!", "I didn't want to ruin Donna's day by asking her that, so I spent your money on an expensive towing service!") And then if you get annoyed at them for ignoring what you actually asked for - and often it has already happened repeatedly - they get angry because they "were just helping you! You should be grateful!!"
And my therapist pointed out that this is not "help", it's "hLep".
Sure, it looks like help; it kind of sounds like help too; and if it was adjusted just a little bit, it could be help. But it's not help. It's hLep.
At its best, it is patronizing and makes a person feel unvalued and un-listened-to. Always, it reinforces the false idea that disabled people can't be trusted with our own care. And at its worst, it results in disabled people losing our freedom and control over our lives, and also being unable to actually access what we need to survive.
So please, when a disabled person asks you for help on something, don't be a hLeper, be a helper! In other words: they know better than you what they need, and the best way you can honor the trust they've put in you is to believe that!
Also, I want to be very clear that the "getting angry at a disabled person's attempts to point out harmful behavior" part of this makes the whole thing WAY worse. Like it'd be one thing if my roommate bought me some passive-aggressive skim milk, but then they heard what I had to say, and they apologized and did better in the future - our relationship could bounce back from that. But it is very much another thing to have a crying shouting match with someone who is furious at you for saying something they did was ableist. Like, Christ, Jessica, remind me to never ask for your support ever again! You make me feel like if I asked you to call 911, you'd order a pizza because you know I'll feel better once I eat something!!
Edit: crediting my therapist by name with her permission - this term was coined by Nahime Aguirre Mtanous!
Edit again: I made an optional follow-up to this post after seeing the responses. Might help somebody. CW for me frankly talking about how dangerous hLep really is.

#hlep#original#mental health#my sympathies and empathies to anyone who has to rely on this kind of hlep to get what they need.#the people in my life who most need to see this post are my family but even if they did I sincerely doubt they would internalize it#i've tried to break thru to them so many times it makes my head hurt. so i am focusing on boundaries and on finding other forms of support#and this thing i learned today helps me validate those boundaries. the example with the milk was from my therapist.#the example with the towing company was a real thing that happened with my parents a few months ago while I was age 28. 28!#a full adult age! it is so infantilizing as a disabled adult to seek assistance and support from ableist parents.#they were real mad i was mad tho. and the spoons i spent trying to explain it were only the latest in a long line of#huge family-related spoon expenditures. distance and the ability to enforce boundaries helps. haven't talked to sisters for literally the#longest period of my whole life. people really believe that if they love you and try to help you they can do no wrong.#and those people are NOT great allies to the chronically sick folks in their lives.#you can adore someone and still fuck up and hurt them so bad. will your pride refuse to accept what you've done and lash out instead?#or will you have courage and be kind? will you learn and grow? all of us have prejudices and practices we are not yet aware of.#no one is pure. but will you be kind? will you be a good friend? will you grow? i hope i grow. i hope i always make the choice to grow.#i hope with every year i age i get better and better at making people feel the opposite of how my family's ableism has made me feel#i will see them seen and hear them heard and smile at their smiles. make them feel smart and held and strong.#just like i do now but even better! i am always learning better ways to be kind so i don't see why i would stop

Cis intersex women being discriminated against in sports for not being "real" women is not misdirected transphobia, it is intersexism.
A century of sex testing for sports participation is intersexism. Calling intersex women "not real women" is intersexism. Saying their sporting successes are due to their not being real women is intersexism. This is on purpose, it's not collateral damage from transphobia. It's intersexism.
When you post about an intersex woman experiencing intersexism in sports but your message is "this person is experiencing transphobia, but actually they are cis! Let's talk about trans women being included in sports!" that is intersexism. If you're using instances of intersexism to discuss transphobia and not even acknowledging the intersexism, it's intersexism.
And it fucking hurts. It fucking hurts when I see a post about one of these athletes and I think "oh! Maybe this post is actually going to acknowledge the discrimination intersex people face! Maybe someone is actually going to care about us!" and the discrimination is immediately minimized and the spotlight is immediately yanked away.
Shut up shut up shut up people like me are worth caring about beyond the extent to which you can use us to talk about other issues!
#leemursays#mine#intersex#intersexism#I've seen three posts already this evening doing this#i do not want to relive the way we talked about this issue this past summer with the Olympics#do better#please please please

... (2021), I’ve Seen a Way (2023), Mandy, Indiana
I cannot be arsed to concoct a visual image of the place to which Mandy, Indiana’s music transports, but there’s a cohesive, thorough atmosphere and mood to this group’s music which is certainly worth tuning in for. Muscular, filthy and nightmarish but also cool and trendy. That sort of vibe.
Pick(s): ‘Alien 3’, ‘The Driving Rain (18)’
