Thoughts from reading Yona of the Dawn Ch. 10

Ch.10 in summary: in a manifestation of her internal change, an enraged Yona takes a stand to try and save Hak from Tae-Jun and co but ultimately causes her and Hak's symbolic death when they fall from a cliff, leaving Tae-Jun and Soo-Won to grapple with the results of their actions as they grieve.

"She's like...a raging firestorm. I can't look away. Did her highness...ever look like this before? At the palace she seemed so young...and weak. Just an ordinary girl. But now, even though she's lost everything..."

Really Yona's "Wind Tribe moment"!! "Even though she's lost everything," she is taking a stance. Acting in spite of suffering. Not letting it stop her.

Repeating my end of chapter 9 thoughts with saying Yona's hidden power has been unlocked inside her. But she seemed like "just an ordinary girl," and well, she's not but she is. And also maybe there is power in being an ordinary girl! But for Yona specifically, she is ordinary in that she doesn't seem to have any special talents or abilities, at least not yet. She's not "good" at anything. But she is learning her own power and strength.

Summing Yona moving forward as "passionate, not passive"

"He's going to die" – look how big that text is! She cares so much about him.

We also get the very important and clear parallel to King Il's death. Yona did get there too late to prevent it, but upon seeing her dead father, she froze. Here, she dives into action.

No more just sitting and hiding and taking it. Yona embodies "stay afraid but do it anyway" What can she do? It doesn't matter. She has to do something.

The eyes here are really something. In Yona's expression you can see her terror and emotion and almost feel her shifting back into how she felt in the moment of her father's death. Tae-Jun's eyes are very expressive too.

It's also interesting how casual (and even excited) Tae-Jun and co are about killing Hak.

Grabbed by the HAIR! And then BAM! She chops it off. HAIR SYMBOLISM, BABY. It is a physical representation of her internal change.

This contrasts the opening scene, where Yona is focused on her hair and her appearance. Now that seems frivolous and doesn't matter. It's not even in her thoughts at this moment. That's another part of her transformation– figuring out her priorities/what really matters.

And she's never used a sword, but that doesn't stop her! She'll do whatever she can in this desperate moment. She just keeps going, such a difference from her prior numb, frozen shock.

Hak is kind of the ultimate motivator for Yona here. She has become progressively more active, but with Hak, acting on someone else's behalf becomes more personal.

Also...Yona the beautiful badass (and again, look at her eyes! The depth there)

"I won't let them kill him! I refuse!" – Yona's stubborn determination, like when she stood her ground against Hak ("I've made up my mind") when leaving the Wind Tribe but in a more perilous, escalated situation.

And the parallel to her father's death was clear before now, but here we get it explicitly spelled out. Yona won't let more people she loves die.

"I said...get away from Hak!"

I keep pointing to the eyes but there's such EMOTIONALITY in them. And Yona is an emotional character, so I love seeing that come across in her face.

We've got kind of the "looks like a mess but has never looked more beautiful" energy

"But...is this really...Princess Yona?" – the transformed Yona, her self-discovery and change is evident to others too. She's almost unrecognizable in her appearance + actions.

"Hak! It's my turn to save you." – awww. There is so much weight to these words. How much Hak means to her, her feelings of guilt and incapability... This whole encounter has been a test of "new Yona" and it must really feel like it for her in this moment. It's a bit like if she fails to save him, then that's it for her.

The energy here is very "I rather than die (with you) than live without you" + "if we go down, we go down together"

"You idiot...run away! You can't do this! Hurry up and get away–" – I like this little combination of teasing Hak + serious Hak. Obviously he's not teasing her in this moment, but he affectionately calls her an "idiot." I feel like you get that a lot in dynamics like Hak and Yona, one calling the other an "idiot" when they prioritize the other instead of what's in their own best interest.

"No! Never! If you die...I'll never forgive you!!" – this is the second time Yona has said this, the first being in chapter 3 after Hak and her flee from the palace. Here, we get a significant pause/reaction from Hak, almost like he didn't believe her before or didn't take it seriously considering the circumstances. But Yona is showing him how serious she was and is. He's seeing her choose him + staying by his side over her own survival.

Just...woah, wow, yes. Beautifully depicted.

And all that's left behind is...HER HAIR.

We see that Tae-Jun actually does care about Yona and that there's more to him than appears. He can be short-sighted and irrational + take things too far (compare his "flirting" in the flashback of chapter 3 with Hak's flirting– I don't love all of Hak's flirting but he is self-aware of when he's doing or saying something somewhat repulsive/off-putting whereas Tae-Jun is not).

Tae-Jun is a mess and a menace, but as the second son, he's also probably trying to prove himself, and thinking Yona has died clearly leaves him feeling horrified and dead inside.

Like Tae-Jun, Soo-Won is shocked and affected by Yona's "death." And OOOOH giving Soo-Won the hair he so loved HA

"Princess Yona...has left this world" – and HELLO I scream not just about the HAIR SYMBOLISM but Yona's SYMBOLIC DEATH (and REBIRTH!) that is happening. She's crossed a threshold.

More of Tae-Jun's reaction: he's feeling guilty + ashamed and can't live with himself. He's tortured by his actions and wants (begs!) to be punished.

"Punish me! Please!" – the desperation. Tae-Jun's outward display works as an expression of what Soo-Won is feeling on the inside and holding in.

Soo-Won thinking of Hak and Yona and their shared past brings me back to Hak and Yona facing the Soo-Won revealed by his betrayal: "Would you authorize this awfulness, Soo-Won?" + "Are you satisfied, Soo-Won?" Soo-Won is facing the results of his choices. And he did choose this, but he didn't want this result specifically. He didn't want his friends to die, but he must accept the responsibility for what happened.

YOON! (I love Yoon) What an introduction lol "What a pain. A pair of corpses" (also also more symbolic death and HakYona are tangled together in it, both having tried to protect the other)

But hello to whatever he was singing prior to finding Hak and Yona. "Long, long ago...the great red sun was devoured. And when the world went dark..." is he also describing what's happening/what is about to happen with Yona and co?

Hi, Chai! I've been following you for a bit, mostly for the RG content, and I've recently seen you talk about your other non-RWBY interests when I realized that I'm really curious on what other media do you like? (Be it shows, movies, music, games, books, etc.)

Oughh this is a very good question. I'll put them under a read more cause I have a feeling I took this question too literally and it might get just a little bit long because of that. 💦

I'm generally very passive with the media I consume and only draw as much RWBY as I do because RG has had me in a vice grip since V8E1 and isn't letting go anytime soon. 💀 But I do engage with lots of other stuff too! This isn't an exhaustive list, just ones I like lots or re-watch often enough.

Anime

I probably watch this stuff more than anything else. My favourite of all time is probably The Eccentric Family, both seasons. The art direction and the messages of the story just hit very hard for me and I re-watch it pretty much every year. My second favourite is Kekkai Sensen (i prefer the first over second season as they switch directors).

Ooo thank you for the ask! :D Some of these are really hard to narrow down to just one, but I'll do my best!

Favorite female character: Hmmm if I had to pick just one, it would be Tohru Honda from Fruits Basket! <3 She's so sweet and genuinely kind and also so strong willed. She sees the best in everyone and wants them to be happy but also rarely puts herself first, and it's nice to see her grow over the course of the series. <3

Favorite male character: Aki Hayakawa from Chainsaw Man, without question <3 I love him so so much, his whole story arc is so well written and he is so kind and caring and such a sensitive soul and I'll spare you my whole rant about him but he's just the best and my favorite character in literally anything <3

Favorite animanga: Hmmm I'd have to say Tokyo Ghoul! I genuinely think that series is a masterpiece and I read it at a time where I really really needed it, so it has a special place in my heart <3 The characters are wonderful and so well written and the story is so gut-wrenching and heartfelt. Also Ken Kaneki is like...right behind Aki in terms of favorite characters out of all things I've read <3 I love that series a lot, I really need to re-read it sometime.

Animanga you are currently enjoying: Ahh I'm not watching too much recently because grad school work is kicking my butt, but I've been catching a few episodes of A Sign of Affection and I'm really enjoying that! (also helped by the fact that Itsuomi's voice in the dub is also Aki's please don't judge me XD) I've also been watching Bucchigiri?! and I....think I like it? Still figuring out my opinions on that one, but I like Marito Jin and he's kinda the only thing keeping me watching XD

Animanga that exceeded all your expectations: Chainsaw Man! I *hated* Chainsaw Man for a good amount of the time I was reading it, I was kinda only in it for Aki's story for the longest time. And without spoiling the manga, there's a big plot reveal at one point that, when it happens, puts a lot of the story in perspective and I genuinely had a moment where I had to put down my phone and be like "......oh my God.....this series is so smart." So once I re-read it with the whole story in mind, I absolutely loved it <3

Unpopular animanga you really love: Rokuhoudou Yotsuiro Biyori! <3 I will sing this show's praises every chance I get! The manga isn't translated in English, so I haven't been able to read it (though I do own up to volume 16) but there is a 12 episode anime on Crunchyroll listed under "Yotsuiro Biyori" and it is one of my comfort shows! It follows four very sweet gentlemen and their cat as they work in a tea shop and help their customers though their problems. It's so so sweet, the characters are so adorable and kind, and it's pretty episodic so you can jump in pretty much anywhere and follow what's going on. Definitely recommend it!

Favorite romance: I don't actually watch a lot of romance anime, so I guess I'll probably have to say A Sign of Affection for right now XD Or Sasaki and Miyano, that series was cute too! :D

Favorite action animanga: Jujutsu Kaisen! The fights in that anime are unmatched <3

Favorite fantasy: Ahhh this one's hard! It's either Yona of the Dawn or The Case Study of Vanitas, but I'm leaning towards Yona purely because I think about it more often! Both of those series are phenomenal! <3

Favorite sci-fi: Psycho-Pass! <3 .....I say having only watched the first 2 seasons and the movie! But the first season of Psycho-Pass IS a masterpiece! And the movie is also really really good! .....We don't talk about season 2 XD

Favorite comedy: Life Lessons with Uramichi-Oniisan XD I love the comedy in that series *so much* XD It does get very dark and pessimistic with it's comedy though, I have very rarely shown it to other people and gotten a reaction other than ".....oh my God" so....be aware of that going in XD

Favorite anime movie: Howl's Moving Castle! <3 I have seen that movie an *unhealthy* amount of times, both in theaters and at home. I....I like that movie a lot haha

Next in your watch list: Metallic Rouge, Ninja Kamui, and Delicious in Dungeon, because friends recommended them to me! :D

Oh this might be get long because I love blabbing on about things I like, but if you're ok with that I'm happy to answer! (also disclaimer idk if anything here will be like. DEFINITIVE all time favorite but all of my answers will at least be within the realm of being one of my favorites lol).

Favorite female character: I just did a Chihayafuru rewatch and forgot how much I really liked Chihaya!! I relate a lot to her of having this kind of hyperfocus/passion for things I love and losing myself to it a little bit, and also how she navigates that passion with the relationships she's formed. I kinda hc her as neurodivergent like me lol but I think she's such a good protagonist!

Favorite male character: Going through heavy Sanji brainrot right now so I gotta go with him lol. You guys know my feelings, but the fun thing about Sanji is how deeply layered he is and how you can just keep picking at him. He has such deep flaws, he can be kind of insufferable but at the same time so caring and good, he really fascinates me.

Favorite animanga: God it has to be One Piece, and I hesitate in saying that because I got into it so recently, but man. Don't get me wrong, it's flawed, I can bitch about the things I don't like, but at the end of the day, there are very few things I've loved to this extent. The themes and the characters and the world and just everything works so well and is filled with such love and care and attention. And it just keeps getting better, which is ridiculous, this thing has been going on for 25 years and Egghead is one of the best arcs in the series. I have full trust that it will stick it's landing and it will be unlike anything we've ever seen.

Animanga I'm currently enjoying: I've been making my way through Blue Lock, it's a lot of fun! I finished the one season that's available and now I'm reading the manga. More of an action series than a sports series lmao but the characters are really fun to watch, it's intense, and it's pretty funny in how intense it is lmao.

Animanga that exceeded all of your expectations: One Pi-No we're going with something else lmao. I'm gonna say JJK actually! I actually gave the first episode a try around the time it aired and it just...did not click lol. Didn't watch more, and then one day I had nothing to do and gave it another try, and I wanted to smack myself, because I think JJK has a great first episode/opening. REALLY liked the first season and then read HI and Shibuya and was just shocked by how good it was, it really surprised me in how amazing those arcs are.

Unpopular animanga you really love: Not sure if this means unpopular as in "guilty pleasure" or "underrated" so I'll answer both lol. I still think it's good but Kill la Kill is definitely a guilty pleasure as well for me, it has a lot more fan service than I'm usually comfortable with and I would undeniably embarrassed to be seen watching it lmao. In terms of underrated, for manga I would say I want Sweat and Soap to be a lot more popular than it is (begging god everyday for an anime adaptation). For an anime, Mushishi definitely is critically acclaimed but I don't think enough people have watched it, it just has such a unique and calming atmosphere, even with the melancholy. It's a good intro anime too for people who are just starting out as well.

Favorite Romance: Oooh maybe a three way tie between Yona of the Dawn, Fruit's Basket, and Kaguya Sama Love is War. All three are so different lol, but maybe something I like about all of them is that (apart from fanfiction) I don't usually like reading straight up romance, there's gotta be something else too. With Yona it's the fantasy elements/big plot, with Kaguya it's the comedy, and Fruba is mainly a romance but it focuses on all the interpersonal relationships, not just the romantic ones. But it kind of simmers in the background until later on it overtakes the story, that's honestly the good shit.

Favorite Fantasy: I might just have to give a list here lmao - Revolutionary Girl Utena, One Piece, FMAB, ATLA, Yona of the Dawn, HxH, Dungeon Meshi, Lord of the Rings, PJO, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Discworld, Mushishi, The Tales from Earthsea (NOT the ghibli movie lmao the book), and if I can include video games: All of the Legend of Zelda series, Hollow Knight, Hades, Super Mario Galaxy

Favorite sci-fi: Everything Everywhere All at Once, or maybe Stein's Gate as well! Oh Neon Genesis Evangelion too.

Favorite drama: Shōwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjū, I also watched Succession and enjoyed that a lot too (kinda a comedy too but more of a drama imo). Omg I can't forget Monster either (is it a drama? idk close enough)

Favorite comedy: Hmm one I haven't really talked about is Hinamatsuri. Omg I should rewatch that, it really is hilarious lmao I love it a lot.

Favorite anime movie: Princess Mononoke, Your Name, and One Piece Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island. OH I really like Promare as well!

I'm an aspiring writer/director who currently lives with two wonderful roommates, one of whom has a cat named Rookie, whom you will see often in my garden posts. My main work in filmmaking is limited to wardrobe/production design. I have 5 short film credits, 1 music video credit, and 3 more shoots coming up in the fall. Of course! I have some chronic health stuff of my ownand have been wanting to write something like this for ages. That’s actuallywhy I made this blog but I started getting requests and didn’t get to thisuntil now. Thank you for sending this, I hope your liver isn’t too bad ♥

Forthis I did more general chronic symptoms, where the biggest thing is chronicpain with a few variations with each character. I hope that’s alright ^-^

Jumin

- you don’t tell him at first,mostly because you know he’ll spend a lot of money trying to help butultimately that won’t do much

- you manage to keep thingsunder control for a while after you move in

- until you promise to go towork with him the next day to help out as he’s been particularly stressedlately

- he said you didn’t have to butyou insist and in the end, he gives in

- the next morning you wake upfeeling fine, but as the day progresses your body quickly starts acting up

- you decide you can deal withit and last through the day

- but while filing some papersJumin gave to you, the pain suddenly spikes and you curl up on the floor,unable to move

- Jaehee finds you andimmediately call Jumin and an ambulance

- you try to say that you’ll befine soon enough but Jumin will hear none of it

- he’s in panic mode honestly

- he has no idea what’s wrongbut the person he loves is hardly able to speak because of pain and he needsthe doctors to see you now

- at the hospital, you’re justgiven some pain medication and you finally explain your condition to him

- he’s slightly upset that youdidn’t tell him before but after you say why he understands to a point

- you convince him not to pourmoney into trying to find a cure for you, but he pours money into making sureyou’re as comfortable as possible and starts donating significantly more tomedical causes

- has a doctor completelyfamiliar with your case on call

- he’s not used to comfortingothers, especially those in pain, but he does his best

- he’ll hold you or let you restyour head in his lap and if you want he’ll bring Elizabeth 3rd overto you

- usually stays quiet and willjust stroke your hair if you’re okay with it and asks every now and then if youneed anything

Zen

- you don’t want to worry him sonever bring it up

- you don’t purposely avoidtelling him, but you don’t make a point to either

- one day he invites you to goto one of his rehearsals

- of course you want to go,you’re really excited

- once you get there though,your excitement dies down

- it’s in a basement, one that’svery humid

- heat does not go well with youand your illness

- you sit down and hope thingswill be fine so you can enjoy seeing Zen rehearse

- things do not go that well

- very quickly, you realize thatthe humidity is getting to you

- you curl up, hoping the painslowly rising will falter

- by the time Zen can take abreak, you haven’t moved an inch and you’re not sure if you can

- you feel faint and your bodyis throbbing in pain

- Zen asks if you’re okay,sitting down next to you and placing a hand on your back

- you shake your head slightlyand he freaks out, starting to ask a bunch of questions about what’s wrong

- you don’t answer most of hisquestions as he’s talking to fast, but you manage to say that you’re in a lotof pain and probably need to go home

- he nods and tells his directorhe’s leaving for the day, which doesn’t make the director happy but Zen doesn’tcare

- he doesn’t care so much thatyou never told him about this, his main problem with it is that if somethingbad had happened he would have had no idea how to help

- he’s never taken care ofanyone sick before, so when you’re having bad days he’s not always sure how tohelp

- he does a lot though

- if you’re in too much pain togo to bed or anywhere else, he’ll carry you

- if you’re having a really badday he insists that you stay laying down as much as possible and he’ll doeverything to help

- if you have meds to take hereminds you when you’re supposed to take them

- tries to do everything youcould possibly need help with

Yoosung

- you don’t say anything untilyou have an appointment and tell him you’re going to the doctor’s

- he asks why, to which youreply “because I have xx”

- he panics a little becausewhat? You never said anything, how long have you had this?

- the idea of you having achronic illness freaks him out a little

- he’s never been close toanyone with something like that and he gets really worried thinking about allthe possibilities of things that could go wrong

- he calms down pretty quickly thoughbecause you have things under control most of the time, just need regular checkups

- since he’s a vet, he doesn’tknow many details about your condition so he learns as much as he can

- if you need meds, he checksevery night or whenever you need to take them, if you have

- also regularly asks throughoutthe day if you’re alright

- if your symptoms flair up he’lltake off from work to take care of you for the day

- likes to go to appointmentswith you if he can

- after you have one, he likesto get ice cream or some kind of snack with you

- after first finding out hetreats you a little more delicately, but eventually stops

Jaehee

- you tell her around the timeyou two start up the café together

- you think it’s best if sheknows beforehand

- but you don’t want to worryher too much so you downplay your condition a lot

- after a busy day, though, yourpain is already pretty high

- you don’t say anything,deciding that if you can finish cleaning up then you’ll be done

- while moving between thetables and wiping them off, your legs give out beneath you and you knock over achair while falling

- Jaehee hears the noise andrushes in

- she calls an ambulance rightaway and while waiting asks you questions to get an idea of exactly what’sgoing on

- sits with your head on her lapand after you answer her questions, tells you to breathe deeply and tries tohelp you do so

- the doctors confirm you’d justhad a very bad flair up and that you’d be fine with some rest

- Jaehee is a bit annoyed thatyou didn’t tell her the extent of your condition, but mostly she’s just glad you’reokay now

- very strict about you takingyour meds (if needed) and getting enough rest, food, etc.

- if you’re not feeling greatshe asks the “on a scale of 1-10” question

- does so much research on yourcondition

- she didn’t do much researchwhen you first told her because of how busy you guys were with opening the caféand everything, and because of how you much you downplayed it

- but after you fall she learnseverything there is to know about your illness

- makes sure you’re seeing thebest doctor available given your location and finances

- will randomly ask throughoutthe day how you’re feeling

Seven

- when doing background checkson you he saw that you visited the doctors a lot, but didn’t look at what yourcondition was specifically to respect at least some of your privacy

- he figures that you’ll tellhim or it’ll come up if it’s important

- he does have an idea of whatcondition you have based on what doctors you saw

- he doesn’t bring it up though

- a few weeks after you moved inwith him you wake up in the middle of the night in agony

- you’re able to just barelymake it the bathroom before you throw up from the pain

- Seven runs in from where hewas working in the other room, keeping your hair out of your face and rubbingyour back

- he gets you some pain meds andholds you throughout the night, trying to stay calm for you

- once your pain subsides andyou’re not on the verge of barfing and he’s confirmed that you don’t need to goto the hospital or anything, he asks you what your condition is

- you softly explain,apologizing for not telling him

- on some level, you assumed healready knew, which was part of your reasoning for not telling him

- he looks up everything aboutyour condition and tries to make some jokes so it’s less of a serious topic

- that doesn’t mean he doesn’ttake your symptoms seriously though, he constantly nags you about how you’refeeling and actually stops eating as much honey Buddha chips, instead buying morehealthy food so you have a better diet

- whenever your pain gets bad, herefuses to let you leave the couch and holds you the whole time if you’recomfortable

- he tries to distract you byplaying games or talking to you about what he’s doing or telling you stories

- whenever you need to go to anappointment he drives you in a different car, every time, no repeats

Your heart was still heavy from the earlier encounters, from seeing that woman and Kaeya walk away and them just getting along all flirty, which ofcourse hit a spot on your nerves but you're not about to ruin your mood over this any longer.

Afterall you too got a date to go to, ofcourse.

You can't help but think though, is it okay? Will I be okay?

Well the universe didn't give you the time to ponder over this, as you jump from your seat a bit, startled from the knock on your door. You remembered as your eyes drifted off to the clock on your bedside table! Ah right, it's him.

Quickly walking over to the mirror, you make sure you're all set, idly mutter positive affirmations to keep yourself composed as you then made your way to the main door. Swinging it open to reveal Huffman. You couldn't lie, outside of work... well without wearing his whole getup as a Knight of Favonius, he looked very charming. Common Mondstadt clothing wrapped around his well built figure aside from the unique piece of cloak and coat, a gentle reminder to you about the temperature decrease around evening.

You smile, acknowledging the visible difference of height between the two of you as he looked down at you, smiling as well as having his face turning red as he too takes a minute to admire you from top to bottom. "Good evening miss L/n." He was the one to say the first words between you two. "You.. look beautifu- well pretty! Uh your dress is stunning if that's okay for me to say." Well Huffman was internally beating himself up for being so awkward and stammering over his words like a teenager. He's never been like this.

Your soft laugh helped him be less tense though, "You look great too, Huffman." You assuringly smiled at him but then you realized it's been a good minute since both of you have been staring at each other like this. "Oh!" You turn back and quickly grab your bag, taking the time to hide the blush on your face too. "Well, ready to leave?" You cock your brows at him, to which he sigh out of relief from the change of subject and nods.

"Yes, miss L/n."

You were honestly surprised to say the least, Huffman was always not the strict and disciplined Knight that swore to protect the city and it's citizens under any costs. No, He seemed to be a man of tales and have a talkative nature under his serious cover. Taking a walk all the way to the Starsnatch Cliff, he kept you entertained as he shared his time in the Knights, about his dreams, why he even decided to join the Knights 3 years ago and confessed of being in the Barbara Fan Club, which lead to another whole conversation, both of you sharing love and admiration for the deaconess who was with no doubt a very good idol. You too talked about your life, your experiences, your daily jobs and all the shenanigans acts you sometimes deal with, whether it's treasure hoarders or hilichurls. Impressing the man with your capability of defending yourself well enough.

Picking a spot near the cliff, you both sat down, both being on the edge but unconsciously without even noticing you two came closer and closer as you both got comfortable with time, up until you both were leaning against each other with no gaps in between to cover and Huffman had his hand snaked on your waist protectively mindlessly.

"You know, it's been a while since I've gone out like this and just..I would like to thank you" Huffman turns to you, suddenly speaking after a while of peaceful silence, you look at him with assurance to continue.

"I honestly didn't think you'd accept me when I've asked you yesterday.." he lets out a chuckle, scratching his neck sheepishly.

"Oh?" You smirk, "Why is that?"

"You know, I just didn't think I'd be interesting enough to have a sliver of your graceful presence." He smiles.

"Ah cut it off. I'm a commoner, you're speaking as if I am one of the nobles-"

"You give yourself less credits for who you are and you know, you don't have to be a noble to catch my attention." he cuts you off, you freeze. Noticing just how close he is to your face. His heart was rhythmically beating along with yours, he was just as nervous as you but he shoot his shot and decided to be a little bold. "The way you are, since the first day I've laid my eyes on you.."

At this point, both of you were breathing hard. You think, you think hard. It's been a while you felt this way. Well you felt this way with Kaeya but the difference is that man is probably out with that woman, playing with her as he played with the strings on your heart but the man infront of you right now, Huffman was internally praying to every Archons and the whole Celestia that you'd just close the gap between the two of you.

You mumble to yourself, "fuck it." As you let your mind throw any concerns or feelings your harbored for the captain with a silver tongue out the edge and closed in the distance between you and Huffman and really savor just how soft his lips felt on yours, how his brown strands tickled the side of your face and just how sweet he felt, specially when you felt him smiling against yours while he just protectively raised his other arm on the back of your head as he laid you down. His body weight erased whatever cold you had felt cause of the wind and just how safe you felt in his strong arms.

Leaning back much to your dismay, you let out a small whine as he laughs, looking down at you. Catching his breath while he couldn't help but say, "You really look as beautiful as the Cecilias." your eyes drifting to the side to realize, you were laying on the ground surrounded by freshly bloomed Cecilias. That made you flustered and look away, anywhere but at the man above you. Gosh his heart was exploding, you are just adorable. "Hey hey no" his warm fingertips gently turns your face to look at him, "look at me, Archons forbid if I allow myself to miss this pretty sight." Your eyes went wide and your skin was on fire while Huffman just couldn't stop smiling and being amused by your every cute little reactions. Before you could muster up anything to say though, the man already has his lips on yours again, almost groaning in relief against you.

The moment was short lived though, as footsteps from afar caused you both to lean back fast and look at the source of the sound. Ah, you both spot the couple that always stayed secretly on the cliff was coming towards your way. Seemed as though they haven't noticed you two in the dark and from that distance, them being Marvin and Marla. Huffman points out it's best if you both sneak away without them noticing, as you both didn't wanted to be seen at this time, considering this is just the first date.

Walking pass them somehow through the trees, you both made you way back to Springvale, the night was still young and silence took over between the two of you. Except it wasn't awkward or tense. It was rather peaceful and comforting, his warm hands never left yours. You noticed he never looked at you but you could make out the blush covering his face on the entire way back.

Finally though, he looked at you as you both step up to the front door of your house, looking back, his face still red but his pretty lips curled into a smile that probably hurt his cheeks from smiling for so long.

"So.." he starts, "Soo." You smirk, unlocking the door, you peered inside, "We didn't get to eat anything, you know?" You say, teasingly ofcourse. But Huffman was a little late to get the memo as the smile faded from his face and pure panic took over. "O-oh! Oh Barbatos forgive me, it slipped my mind, I can run over to Good Hunter right now and fetch us a meal-"

You laugh, raising a hand to stop him, "Please! Huffman I was just joking." You opened the door wider invitingly, "Besides, wouldn't it be nice to have something homemade, hmm?" You wink, catching on, the sweet little smile returns to his face. Stepping in, he removed his cloak and the coat he had on underneath.

"Well, I have no complains, miss L/n."

"Y/n is just fine."

He brings your face a little closer to his by leaning down, "Okay, y/n." Before kissing you again, pulling away and suggesting he shows you a thing or two of what he knows about cooking, to which you jokingly ask him to not burn down your house.

To ask again, is it okay? Will you be okay?

I think, you will be.

i haven't read the fanbooks, the short story collections, the manga (it has extras, i think?), nor the sequel (hannelore's house of lords, right?) yet. i'd like to think that's going to last me for a while, but the brainworms are too strong and i just KNOW i'm going to finish them all in under two weeks, tops. do you have any aob fic recs? or any other book/light novel/web novel/manga recommendations? PLEAS EI'M NOT READY TO LET GO OF AOB FJEAKFN

I've only read the ones that have been translated and for the most part they are just different POV on what we already know happened in the series, I like them, but not much more story wise. . . I think Hannelore's is set after the series though, I looked at a few on the site and they seem to be after Rozemyne has 'graduated' from school, but I didn't want to read them yet so not completely sure they all are... maybe you can clarify after you read them.

I did try to look into AOB fanfiction, but A LOT of them are spoilerly so often I couldn't follow (as I haven't read all the way to the end) or didn't want to be too spoiled. I'm looking though my AO3 history and I only looked at a few before I  decided to just wait, so maybe you or other can add their favorites.

There was one I remember reading and liking was Schlaftraum's Blessing

I admit this is what lead me to finally seeking out the Japanese website and spot reading a few of the chapters. Most fanfiction likes to focus on romance or a romantic moment over telling a story, but this one integrated nicely with the series and had a nice thru arc between all the parts and was written well. I see that the author TheChatteringMagpi has since started a few more AOB stories and they all look interesting, one is AU and the other about Adolphine, so maybe even I can read them without needing to have read everything yet. So if I had to recommend one this is the best I got as I haven't really done a deep dive on AOB fanfiction / Japanese doujinshi.

Would love anyone else with recommendations to add their favorites stories

As for other series... I guess I could write more about this later with a better break down... I actually used to read a lot more when I was younger, but took a break from it, but during Covid I jumped into manga/anime again so I've been playing catchup ever since, it feels like there are more titles than ever now.

OK maybe I've just been reading too much into things but I think...Yona might get pregnant at some point in the story.

What makes me say that? Well it all began in the Xing arc when Yona gets her period unexpectedly and starts getting swift period pains, making the others concerned. Now I'm sure all the ladies out there can relate to this situation on a very personal level. But what made this stand out to me is that although this is a Shojo manga and periods being focused on for a brief moment isn't uncommon, it's normally found more in series that have more sexually active characters. Such as Ai Ore, Black Bird, and Wolf Girl & Black Prince.

While Yona of the Dawn hasn't explicitly shown two characters having sex, Kusanagi makes it VERY apparent that there's a lot more sexual activity that isn't being shown to the readers. Such as the Red Light District being a prominent setting early on, the constant pressure on Su-Won to sire an heir with a Queen, and even the (failed) attempt by one of Tae-Jun's maids to get Hak and Yona to have sex after Yona's bath. Giving her an aphrodisiac to seduce Hak, peaches to snack on (peaches are estrogen boosters and believed to be fertility aids), and their room was set up for a married couple situation.

And this has been apparent since the beginning of the series.

Yona and Hak's relationship has finally progressed to the point where they're lovers. Their friends practically treat them like they're Husband and Wife, Hak isn't afraid to kiss her now that she's told him that she loves him in the current arc, and Yona herself has even shown more signs of wanting to get a little more intimate with him now that they're lovers.

But I believe Kusanagi plans on using Yona's pregnancy as a way to further her role in the political war raging within the palace. Because Su-Won refuses to sire an heir or take a wife, Yona and Hak having a child would not only produce a royal heir, it would also make her more favorable in the eye of the people. Since dynasties and kingdoms throughout history have viewed the fertility of their rulers as an important part of their society. If there isn't an heir to take the throne after their ruler passes away, it sets the stage for a civil war to seize the throne for themselves. Queens in particular were focused on heavily in regards to fertility and having children. Such as the real world example of King Henry and his many wives that either couldn't produce children or couldn't bare him any sons that he had divorced until he got a son.

So all the pressure Su-Won gets from the leaders around him to have a child in order to secure the throne for his family isn't without historical accuracy. It's one of the themes in Yona of the Dawn that is brought up CONSTANTLY - having children.

Su-Won is running out of time. Even if he manages to have a child with a Queen, he might not even be able to see his child grow up due to his sickness. But I believe he doesn't want to have a child because he doesn't want his child to suffer from the same disease he has. Since he's a part of the Crimson Dragon King bloodline.

While Hak has been hiding his desire for Yona since childhood and has made it clear that he has to hold back from acting on his sexual desires for the sake of being her bodyguard for most of the story. But fast forward and Hak is now Yona's lover. His love is mutual. And they've shared quite a few steamy kisses since he rescued her from the burning palace. Who's to say that they won't have sex at some point in the story? Especially when Kusanagi has been practically winking at the readers with the bedroom scene set up by one of Tae-Jun's maids that it was going to happen at some point in the story.

So to wrap up this theory: I believe at some point in this arc Yona and Hak will marry in secrecy and on their wedding night they will have sex. Especially if Yona wants to consummate their marriage before her virginity is used as a political pawn by Kei-Shuk to gain the alliance of a foreign nation. And their first time winds up being the only time that they need in order for Yona to become pregnant with their first child.

But again...that's a theory.

Owari no Seraph/Seraph of the End - vampires! possession! drama!

Bleach - One of my first ever anime! Kind of fizzled out during the drudge of vs. Arrancar fights, but I'm excited for the new season. High nostalgia value, currently reading the manga.

Dororo - lovely and dramatic

Haiku! - very low stakes and lighthearted fun

Free - fun sports anime with fun character dynamics!

Satsuriku no Tenshi/Angels of Death - this is a weird one where the show itself is actually too far into the horror/gore for me to enjoy on its own but i read quiet like a fight and that propelled me through a good chunk of it. the amount of anime I've started because of good fic might be embarrassing if I cared.

Magi - the sexism was really over my threshold but in between that i had fun

K/K Project - kind of weird but i watched the whole thing in one night and cried. Suoh is one of my favorite character types and Kenjiro Tsuda is one of my favorite VAs.

Seven Deadly Sins - definitely not on my rec list given the sexism but the dude in red (Greed?) is My Kind of Character so i skipped through a lot of it.

Partly watched and enjoyed:

Isekai Izakaya - certain shows I really love, but instead of watching them all at once, I pull out an episode whenever I'm in the mood. I pull this one out whenever I want to chill and see delicious food.

Trigun - fun, more or less the same as above! More episodic type anime usually falls under this category for me.

Tanaka-kun is Always Listless - another chill one that's firmly on my likes list even thought I haven't seen much of it

Mob Psycho 100 - REALLY liked the first season, haven't really been able to get into the second for whatever reason.

Kimetsu no Yaiba/Demon Slayer - Liked the first season! It doesn't quite have that special spark that makes me love it, but the lead is precious. I might continue.

My Hero Acadamia - I watched like until? season three? and had some kind of allergic reaction that has rendered me spectacularly indifferent. I enjoyed it at the time, though?

One Punch Man - kind of brainless fun for when I want the exact same thing repeatedly but in a funny way

Kamisama Kiss - Tomoe scratches a particular character itch for me but I keep getting frustrated by shoujo romance tropes I hate

Golden Kamuy - I really enjoyed the first season! and maybe season two, I'm not sure? I would like to finish this one sometime.

Rurouni Kenshin - the characters are a+ but some older shows are A Lot. I might try the manga instead?

The Ancient Magus' Bride - I get bothered by shows where female characters are rendered permanently delicate by circumstance or tropes (one of the things I dislike in Yona) and when it's combined with romance it can squick me really easily. This kinda walked the line? Enough that I stuck with it, and it's absolutely beautiful.

Sword Art Online - less bored and more baffled? I really liked the firsttttt....two? seasons? but then they kept jumping settings and I got frustrated.

Black Clover - eventually the shounen shows start to blur together and the first few episodes felt like Just More Shounen so I dropped it.

Thoughts from reading Yona of the Dawn Ch. 4

Ch.4 in summary: the symbolic end of childhood, the (Yona, Hak, Soo-Won) trio backstory, and the history of Yona's loneliness and circle of support

The child left behind.

"Please don't cry, father. Mother's gone, but I'm still here"

When one parent is lost, the burden can fall especially hard on the child as the surviving parent relies on them and/or grows absent. In a way, the loss of one parent is the loss of both.

"You're not alone" – a BIG THEME for the story.

"I need to stay cheerful so my father doesn't cry"

I usually do the The Apothecary Diaries connection, but surprise! Here I'm calling on Fruits Basket and Tohru with how Yona must be there and behave a certain way for her father's benefit like how Tohru did for her mother after her father died.

"You're not alone. And...I have Soo-Won with me" – Yona has Soo-Won as a friend and a support and she has Hak, which we are repeatedly shown but Yona never seems to address (at least not yet or when looking at the past). Could it be she's simply taking him for granted? Has him as such a staple that he isn't noteworthy or "special"? I take it she doesn't realize how important he is to her yet. These two, both in denial in some regard.

"That's amazing, Hak! You cheered Yona right up" – no notes, just genuinely hilarious. And shows off that Yona-Hak dynamic we've come to know. The teasing and comfort.

"Where's my father?" "His majesty is extremely busy. He only just ascended the throne, remember." – poor Yona :( She tries to be there for her father, but feels a bit abandoned by him.

But! If King Il only recently ascended the throne and his wife recently died...is it possible that Soo-Won's father is behind Yona's mother's death?

Even in this memory/flashback, all is not well and there's a lot happening in the background that young Yona probably doesn't understand. This is ultimately a feel-good memory, but Yona is missing the full picture as she focuses on her personal relationships and trauma (not that I blame her).

Yona, Soo-Won, and Hak really are a trio of best friends.

"Lately I've been holding Yona's hand while we sleep, so this is just like normal" "You do that? I think I should leave. I'm in the way." "What?! All three of us should hold hands!" – Hak is already feeling some jealousy and his "I'm in the way" is very much the outline of his future approach to the Yona and Soo-Won situation. And Soo-Won's obliviousness to the lines being drawn within their group is also very telling.

Soo-Won is doing all this and expects us to believe that the way he acted with Hak and Yona was all a lie. Look at those hearts. He is a lil bean excited by everything.

"I didn't know he was your grandfather." "I'm an orphan. Grandpa and I aren't actually related." – Soo-Won didn't know about Hak's connections and status, these things didn't really matter to these kids. Only Hak already feels like he isn't "really" the heir to the Wind Tribe. He feels unworthy and like an outsider.

"But...Mundok came to see you. He must really love you, huh?" – yes, you tell him Yona! She is of course hurting on the inside because her father hasn't come to see her, but this is also a sweet moment between her and Hak. Don't let him be such a grump resigned to feeling unworthy!

Soo-Won's love and admiration for his father just pours out of him. He also admires Mundok and his strength, showing what Soo-Won values in a person and what he will try to emulate.

"Uncle Yu-Hon...he's so tough and stern. He's nothing like Soo-Won at all" – or so it seems, for now.

"Yon-Hi was determined to come too...But in her condition, it would be dangerous for her to fall ill, so I made her stay home" – what's up with Soo-Won's mom? Is she pregnant? What happened to her? Soo-Won (in present day) seems like he doesn't really have anyone.

"You mustn't make your mother worry. I want you to slaughter this sickness as soon as possible" – strength is valued above all else by Soo-Won's father too. It seems he is probably hard on his son too, at least having high expectations of him.

"It hurts so much, father...Don't abandon me."

Little Yona is a reflection of current Yona (and vice-versa) – in moments of hurt, she retreats into herself, becoming distant and depressed. She doesn't eat or take care of herself, as if life (or her life specifically) is not worth living/doesn't matter.

"Yeah...I'm sorry. I'm, sorry for thinking I was all alone."

More emphasis on Yona having Hak and Soo-Won– they're her people (along with her father, but he is not there for her as much).

But King Il does say Yona gets lonely when Hak (and Soo-Won) aren't there, and it's true–what does she do when they're gone? Loneliness is still a big part of her life. I said she lives for snatches of moments with Soo-Won, but moments with Soo-Won and Hak light up her life and drive her forward (though infatuated Yona seems to forget about the Hak of it all).

I wonder how Yona's loneliness shifts when Hak becomes her personal guard and is a more permanent fixture.

"Your father is the king. He's doing his job even at a time like this. I admire that." – Hak's words are to cheer Yona up, but I think he also demonstrates true admiration for duty.

Yona joyfully eating the terrible food her father made her really exemplifies how much she values acts of care from other people.

I said back in chapter 1 that Yona hasn't really thought of the future much beyond wanting to be with Soo-Won– she's not really ambitious or caught up in who she could be or what she could do, she's happy living for those small moments and the people she loves. She wants to love and be loved in return. She knows she's the princess in terms of the lifestyle she's gotten used to, but she hasn't considered the implications of being a princess– at least she hadn't until her father brought up that her position might put the ones she loves in danger.

I love the look exchanged by Hak and Soo-Won, expressing their mutual care for Yona.

A stab to the heart!

"I wish we could all sleep next to each other forever and ever, even if it meant having that cold" – and this from Soo-Won! At this point, he too had simple desires.

"We don't have to be sick. Staying together...is pretty simple." "You're right. Soo-Won...Hak...let's play again tomorrow. Let's play forever and ever..." –I love Hak being the one to point out that they can just choose to stay together and here we basically get a promise of that, an expression of the intention to remain close forever. Ouch.

Now that childhood and that promise is forever tainted. Yona (and Soo-Won and Hak) will never get it back.

I wonder if his father's death is what tainted it for Soo-Won and changed his heart. And now with the death of her father, Yona is forced to experience the same.

Soo-Won threw all of this, the love and the friendship, away. And basically ruined it for all of them, but I feel it isn't just his fault. Whatever we're missing from the story of King Il and his brother will shed some light on this.

It's sad that now even happy memories must be viewed through this new lens. Yona can't think of Soo-Won or her father without feeling the weight of what happened.

The pain continues when Yona wakes from her memory-dream-nightmare to find Hak gone. Her facial expressions are such a journey! From panic to relief at seeing Hak to feeling the full weight of sadness and grief as reality sets in.

She had her father, Soo-Won, and Hak, but now Hak is all she has left.

"The three of us...always used to gaze up at the sky together. That sky is nowhere to be see now." 💔

What was and the future that could have been are gone. And Soo-Won isn't unaffected, even if he pretends to be. He remembers it all too.

The symbolic end of childhood.

Soo-Won lets Hak and Yona go. "You're going to let them live?"

"Now that they've left the palace, there's nothing they can do to us. Anyway...we've got more important things to do." – In spite of everything, Soo-Won still cares for them but hides his affection behind practical justifications.

Soo-Won is angry and determined to follow the path he has set on. Yona is lost and sad. And interestingly, Hak still looks to the sky.

For the Fave's Ask... 1-21 😁

Starting off tough! (With question one, but that's okay.) XD I don't know about absolute favorites right now, but I loved My Sisters The Saints by Colleen Campbell as well as Left To Tell by Immaculée Ilibagiza. (Where memoirs are concerned.) My favorite volume from Yona of the Dawn is volume 18 (because of Zeno's backstory!). As far as poetry goes, right now, I'm enjoying Mantras Of A Poet Jessica Powers, but haven't finished reading that yet. Date And Time by Phil Kaye was my go to read last year, because I bought it during a Poetry Month sale (having heard several of the poems in it before), and have reread certain poems lots of times. I also loved my anthology of Robert Frost's poetry. (And I love so many poems by poets I have yet to get poetry collections and chapbooks for.) Novels? Not sure; I haven't been reading much fiction lately. XD (And when I have, it's been fanfiction.) XD And in general, I love C.S. Lewis' writing, though I've read very, very little of his fiction. 2. Ooh. Out of the movies I saw recently, I absolutely loved Chariots of Fire! Like, I watched it about last month or so, but it's absolutely incredible! (I'm debating rewatching it. It's a true story about the Olympics to summarize poorly, but it's about two men in particular who ran during the Olympic games. And it's just incredible.) As far as Studio Ghibli films, I ranked Princess Mononoke as my favorite years ago (and I haven't watched near enough of those). For watching a lot of movies lately, I'm really blanking. XD 3. Right now, probably Yona of the Dawn or Akagami No Shirayukihime. Chuck is up there on the list too, for a non-anime suggestion. I really love FMA in general, and I've been enjoying the Fruits Basket reboot when I was watching it regularly. I have a Season to go in that and the Prelude to see. XD (I've read the whole manga, which now that I realized I didn't mention series has been up in my favorites as far as manga series go. A place that Yona of the Dawn is also at.) :) 4. I don't know??? I listen to all sorts of songs. I've been really enjoying songs about family and friendship though haven't been listening to them as much. XD I know every time I hear "Holy Spirit" by Francesca Battistelli on the radio, I stop and listen. It practically sits me right down in Adoration, and one day, if I ever felt like I could or should bring music with me to Adoration, I'd take just that song. I was absolutely in love with I Wanna Go Back by David Dunn last year. :) Then Cursillo happened, which sounds funny, but afterwards, I stopped finding the song as relatable. (Which is probably fantastic in some ways.) XD Anything Matthew West or Francesca Battistelli is amazing. XD But I didn't really list songs out of other genres, whoops.

5. Of music? I don't have one. Well, in terms of writing, I like stuff that focus on relationships. Like I love family, friendship, and romance genres the most. As far as anything more exact than that, I don't have anything else? I do really love Fantasy though as well, though rarely write or read it, whoops. XD In music, it's the lyrics that are most important to me, if I don't like the lyrics, I don't like the song, and if I love the lyrics, I love the song. So, I listen to about any genre imaginable. XD 6. Uh??? Found Family, I guess??? I don't usually think about tropes, but I always forget that's a trope, and I love it. (Something like what happens in Chuck with the main characters or Yona of the Dawn with the Happy Hungry Bunch. Like both of those are my best examples for what kind of Found Family I'm looking for.) <3 <3 <3 7. What??? Well, I love my family and friends and the Saints, etc... (I guess to put it simply, which doesn't help with specifics.) Saints feel like really good friends or siblings or role models, and there are definitely Saints I fangirl over, though that's probably not the right word. XD And Jesus! Of course! (Since it says people, I'm assuming human. And Jesus being both Human and Divine has to count.) My goal is to love everybody, and so, I'm not actively ranking people. That sounds like a really crazy goal, but it's something I want to do. (Which means loving my enemies, which I don't like to call anybody an enemy, so the closest to enemies I have are the people that don't like me. So, I love them extra hard! Even though it's onesided!) <3 <3 <3
