I was discussing Korean shamanism with @agotia-t after they introduced Hanbam, and this encouraged me to finally draw my White-Naped Crane shaman OC, Chongsu (link to months old post here), as I said I eventually would. I have briefly included her in The Rod that Blocks the Lightning (here, about 2/3rds of the way through the chapter), as well.

She participates in the spiritual and medicine making practices of the mudang, while avoiding the performances of the kisaeng path.
Here is an example of one of her gutdang worship rooms, in which she would perform sacred ceremonies.

Generations past, a Joseon style caste system was kept in place with the help of the spiritual priest class, mudang shamans with a mixture of Confucianism and Buddhism, enjoying many luxuries and power in their caste high above most other species.
In the current day of the AU, generations after the former kings and caste systems were overthrown, the scars still remain (ex. Weasels thinking they are superior to smaller species and the squirrels needing to be reminded that they are allowed to join the soldier hedgehogs).
The White-Naped cranes spiritual practices, and preference towards the old caste system, have fallen out of favor with the general populace of Flower Hill. It is, however, very popular with the Weasels, who still hold that they are superior to the smaller animals. Many shaman leave Flower Hill to join the weasels to provide spiritual practices, something Flower Hill cannot stop due to migration permits.
Chongsu is based on a mudang shaman whose bloodline supposedly ties back the strongest to Sungmo, the mother of all shaman priestesses. Which makes her a sort of community elder despite her young age, as well as her constant mysterious illnesses.
She is a young crane, who lives in Flower Hill, too sickly to make the annual migration to Teikoku (Japan), like most of the White-Napes cranes. She and her followers assist in making medicine for the troops. Her biggest wish and command is for all species to get along with each other in harmony. What she does not realize, is that as the ‘supreme leader,’ this could possibly be misinterpreted as a command for her followers to reinstate the caste system, by any means possible, which could even mean teaming up with weasel, wolf, or tiger leaders, who also wish to return to the caste system and crush all underfoot.
In real life, white named cranes are unusual in that they primary live in the demilitarized zone of North Korea, but migrate to Japan. Shaman still exist in Korea to this day (participating in spiritual/healing leaders, fortune telling, and entertainment such as with the kisaeng), but are sometimes treated with suspicion, especially in North Korea, due to many of them, especially the kisaeng (who the Japanese troops found similar to geisha, apparently according to reports), siding with the Japanese during the invasions. As a result, the distrust and semi discrimination the Flower Hill commanders hold for Chongsu, is a hint that all is not absolutely perfect in Flower Hill.
#squirrel and hedgehog#separate pictures because I AM NOT drawing that window a third time#and I would have to if I wanted to get her in there#return of the snake wine from the Halloween posts though lol#squirrel and hedgehog OCs#guess who discovered 3D rotating and radial fill!#anyway I am unsure of what gods to use in there and I'm a bit uncomfortable all of a sudden with using the wrong ones#in the wrong context#so I used the wikipedia picture of Sungmo and a picture of crane from kung fu panda#using a crane made sense but I can remove it if it is sacrilegious#some people on Tumblr really like Crane from Kung fu Panda A LOT#but I wound up using real life cranes as references instead since it was easier#props to all of them for drawing forward facing bird heads though#Mr. Ping was good for wing reference and holding things though. Does Crane ever hold things?#white naped crane#gutdang#mudang shaman#Taegeuk#Sam Taeguk#chosŏn-ot#I tried to line the candles up with the same colors and trigrams like the South Korean flag#I can provide the references for all of this if anyone wants#the window patterns can be found anywhere on the internet apparently#all the mudang shamans seem to be photographed with their arms in the same position like that?#I also used my own photos of some plants and paintings#Chongsu is really an innocent young girl but will be treated as just as guilty by the FH commanders if she cannot control her followers#idk if I should mention that she has epilepsy in the post#It kind of has Hmong#the spirit catches you and you fall down#vibes

Wikipedia, 자수성가 (自手成家)
자수성가 (自手成家) (Ja Su Seong Ga) is the fourth (officially fifth) studio album by South Korean boy group Fable. It was released on February 20, 2025 by Zenith Entertainment. Its lead single, "별주부전" represents the group’s first foray into traditional Korean folk music.

YouTube, why is it so hard to cancel kpop boy groups?
The saying “there’s no such thing as bad publicity” seems to hold true in the case of Fable. Despite a small handful of scandals that would have ended the careers of smaller boy groups or just about any girl group, Fable has come back with one of their most commercially successful albums to date. The slight dip in their sales wasn’t reflected by their music show wins, or their increased music video views, or the number of endorsements Haksu appeared in, or anything else at all. For a group who built their career on the idea of Korea, a chinilpa scandal should have been the final dozen or so nails in the coffin. For whatever reason, it wasn’t.

this isn’t just the old fable this is ancient fable

Vice, Fable’s Comeback is a Stunning Display of Perseverance
After covering the controversy surrounding Fable’s Byeonghwi, I had the pleasure of attending the comeback showcase of his group’s latest album. True to their word, they were perfectly on time with their only slightly postponed release date of February 20. Going into the showcase, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Would Fabulists continue to stand behind them? Or would the sentiments I saw online be reflected in real life? I got my answer far earlier than I expected to. The audience was full of dedicated fans, many with Fable’s lightstick: a tiger figurine set atop a taeguk under a clear plastic dome. Upon my arrival, I bought one of my own, along with a convenient wrist strap to carry it and a keychain charm of a persimmon with the album’s name inscribed on the bottom: a piece of the night’s exclusive merchandise. As the minutes ticked closer to the beginning of the showcase, the crowd’s excitement became more and more palpable. All it took was the lights dimming for the cheering to start—Fable had yet to step on stage. The anticipation built for a few more minutes, and then it was time. The silhouettes of the current five active Fable members, dressed in custom outfits courtesy of modern hanbok brand Shinbok, were enough for the crowd to reach a fever pitch. Even in my desire to remain objective, I couldn’t help but get caught up in the crowd’s energy. One thing was clear: it would take more than this scandal to bring Fable down.

@.atlas.son via Instagram Live
“Intak-hyung said I can play the demos for the Fable songs I wrote. Sajangnim said I shouldn’t do that, not that I couldn’t do that.” Atlas grins lopsidely at the camera. He sits in a poorly lit room, the barest shadows of a guitar and a drumset behind him. “Don’t tell him, ‘kay?” He lifts his laptop, a silver Macbook covered in stickers, into full view of the camera. “I was surprised that I was asked to do this. I mean, I only debuted”—he counts on his fingers, pointer, middle, ring, pinky—”four months ago. Intak-hyung wrote my debut song. There’s no way I’m on his level yet.” He pauses, gaze flicking between his laptop and the camera. “You’re not allowed to ask me what my favorite song is. But I would have kept ‘쉽다’ for TMT if I could.”

Billboard, Fable’s Andrew and Mingeun on Their Latest Album, Byeonghwi, and More
“This was our first time writing traditional folk music, although we’ve been preparing for a while,” Mingeun recalls. “It was like learning to sing all over again.” He speaks in an easy, self-assured manner, taking small sips of his whipped cream-topped coffee between sentences. “It was probably Intak-hyung’s first time writing folk music too. It’s hard to tell with him sometimes.” I take the opportunity he’s offered me and ask Andrew my next question. “You’ve written most of Fable’s music. Is there any reason why you didn’t work on this album?” I catch his pleasant expression freeze for a second before a more professional facade slams down. “I wouldn’t say I’ve written most of Fable’s music. That’s only true if you started counting recently,” he says. “Intak wrote the majority of our music for years before that. I’m not sure why him writing this album is a surprise to anyone.” I sense there’s more to this conversation that no one wants to tell me, and I move past the fact that he didn’t answer the question.

Am I the only one who noticed Hajun's character based outfit is inspired by the South Korean flag called "taegeuki"? The white colors of his polo and jacket mixed with different shades of red (representing the yang) and blue (um or the yin in Korean according to the to/Tao chinese influence) coordinating the attire schemes around it? If you also recognize the black as well in his ripped knee jeans, and designs overall also comes from the flag itself!
The three bars on Hajun's neck tattoo could be the four sets of the flags trigrams as I've researched. He has three bars tattooed on his neck it means "sky," according to the taeguk design from the upper red part (heaven). Since I've been observing how Hajun really sparks the Korean representation in the anime paradox live.

In 2022 my only motivation to wake up every day was to watch BTS content. I spent hours lying in my bed watching old RUN BTS! episodes, random interviews, Bon Voyage episodes over and over again… My friend Lou (🥰) recommended me to open a blog to organize all that content and keep it handy if want to rewatch o remember any specific moment. And that's how this compilation blog started. Little did I know that this small community of ARMYS was going to do me so much good! I've felt super accompanied by your creations, memes and personal stories… I can proudly say that I've grown this year. I still struggle with my anxiety and depression but I have important goals now: I've started studying again and I want to be a better woman when Bangtan returns. There are better and worse days but here on Tumblr I always find a warm space where I feel you're next to me even if it is from a distance.
So I want to wish happy holidays and merry christmas (if you celebrate) to all my amazing followers and to the people I usually see on my timeline. These dates can be hard for some and we need an even bigger hug 🫂

Let’s throw Sport Poomsae vs. Traditional Forms in the ring. What is the difference?
Traditional forms is like its name, the more traditional event for forms competition. Depending on the type of event, you may have a certain selection of forms you can do based on style, martial art, etc. There are also open testimonial forms events where anyone from any martial art doing any form can compete with their form. For the sake of this post, we will assume Taekwondo competition event with only Korean forms allowed.
Traditional forms do not have a standard way to do each and every move. You need to do your form correctly and not modify it, but there’s no standard to exactly how every single move should look because different styles and Dojang have different ways of doing their moves. Instead, they look for power, energy, and good presentation. At the end, they will simple hold their hand out and point to whoever they feel had a better form.
Sport Poomsae is much more complicated. Sport Poomsae is limited to only WT taeguk and black belt forms. In this event, there is a standard for exactly how each and every move should be performed and you cannot stray from this without loosing points. But what do I mean by points?
Much to the confusion of many traditional martial artists, sport poomsae has scoring. You start with 10 points, and throughout your form 0.1 or 0.3 deductions will be made based on accuracy issues. Accuracy deductions may include things like a stance not being the right length/width, your arm being a bit off to the side, or your back leg not being at the exact right angle. After you have finished your form, the judges will then put in presentation. Presentation is the power, energy, and flow of your form. They have a range of scores they will give based on how good your presentation is. At the end, they average these points up and you have your score, the highest score in the division wins.
Although these two events both revolve around forms, they are massively different. Both require skill and dedication to be good at, but have much different ways to go about training and winning.

AFC World Cup Qualifiers recap: Round 3
Australia 3:1 China PR
Following a recent managerial change, the Socceroos have returned to winning form. Under Tony Popovic’s leadership, the team entered the match as clear favourites despite their recent challenges. Although they conceded an early goal against the run of play, Australia maintained their pressure and secured a 3-1 victory over the Red Dragons. This result provides much-needed relief and lifts them to second place in the standings, with four points from three matches. Goal scorers for Australia: Lewis Miller, Craig Goodwin, Nishan Velupillay Goal scorer for China PR: Wenneng Xie
Jordan 0:2 South Korea
The Asian Cup runners-up faced a setback in their latest World Cup qualifier, falling to the Taeguk Warriors. South Korea dominated the match, maintaining control of possession and limiting Jordan’s opportunities to hold onto the ball. Despite having just 25% possession, Jordan managed to take more shots (13) than their opponents (12). However, their efforts fell short as they succumbed to a 2-0 defeat against the clearly superior South Korean side. With this victory, South Korea solidified their position as table toppers, while Jordan remains in 3rd place. Goal scorers for Korea Republic: Young-woo Seol, Hyun-gyu Oh
Uzbekistan 0:0 IR Iran
Team Melli played to a draw against the White Wolves of Central Asia, with both sides proving evenly matched—each recording 10 shots throughout the game. Despite their parity in statistics, Team Melli showed greater attacking intent and might have secured all three points if not for the heroics of Utkir Yusupov, Uzbekistan’s goalkeeper, who made four crucial saves. In contrast, Uzbekistan struggled in front of goal, managing only one shot on target. Due credit must be given to Team Melli for maintaining the scoreline after being reduced to 10 men in the 57th minute, following Saleh Hardani's dismissal by the referee. Their resilience and determination in the face of adversity played a crucial role in securing the draw against a competitive opponent. Following this match, both teams remain level with 7 points each, but Uzbekistan holds the top spot in the standings due to a superior goal difference.
Bahrain 2:2 Indonesia
The Red Devils of Asia played to a draw against Team Garuda on October 10, 2024. Talajic's side showcased their dynamic attacking style, keeping Indonesia on the defensive for much of the match. Their efforts paid off early, with Mohamed Jasim Marhoom netting a stunning long-range goal in the first half, shaking Team Garuda. However, Indonesia quickly responded just before halftime, with Ragnar Oratmangoen levelling the score. The match remained tightly contested, and although Indonesia came close to victory, Marhoom struck again in the final minutes to equalize, neutralizing the lead that had been established by Rafael Struick. This result marks Indonesia's third consecutive draw, leaving them still in search of their first win, while Bahrain holds 4th place with 4 points. Goal scorer for Bahrain: Mohamen J Marhoom Goal scorers for Indonesia: Ragnar Oratmangoen, Rafael Struick
Oman 4:0 Kuwait
Oman delivered a dominant performance against Kuwait in their latest FIFA World Cup qualifier, securing a resounding victory in Muscat. From the outset, Oman took control of the match, consistently pressing forward while Kuwait's defence struggled to keep up. Oman registered 17 shots compared to Kuwait's 8, highlighting their offensive superiority. Abdulrahman Al Mushaifri earned the Man of the Match award with a well-deserved brace. This much-needed win propels Oman to 4th place in the standings, while Kuwait remains winless, with two draws and one loss. Goal scorers for Oman: Abdulrahman Al Mushaifri, Abdullah Fawaz, Muhsen Al Ghasani
UAE 1:1 DPR Korea
In what can be termed a shocking result, the UAE dropped points against North Korea in a nail-biting game of football. North Korea turned out to be a surprisingly tough team to compete against for UAE, as they struggled to find the back of the net against the east asian team. Despite clearly being the better side, North Korea conceded first and had to work hard to restore the scoreline. Their efforts paid off as they were presented with the opportunity to level the score from the spot but Khalid Elsa stood tall and made a crucial save which allowed UAE to hold onto their lead. The lead didn't last long as Il Gwan Jong scored in the 88th minute to draw level allowing North Korea to salvage a point from this game. The UAE currently holds 3rd place in the standings with 4 points, while DPR Korea is positioned second last with 2 points from three matches. Despite their recent draw, the UAE remains ahead in the race, while North Korea is still searching for their first win of the campaign. Goal scorer for UAE: Yahya Alghassani Goal scorer for DPR Korea: Il Gwan Jong
Qatar 3:1 Kyrgyzstan
Qatar secured a crucial victory over Kyrgyzstan in their FIFA World Cup qualifier, living up to their pre-match billing as clear favorites. Tintin Marquez's side demonstrated their attacking prowess, preventing Kyrgyzstan from settling into their usual rhythm. Akram Afif delivered another standout performance, while Almoez Ali made his mark with a goal. This win propels Qatar to 4th place in the standings with 4 points from three games, while Kyrgyzstan's winless run continues in their pursuit of the World Cup 2026 qualification. Goal scorers for Qatar: Almoez Ali, Ibrahim Al Hassan, Tamirlan Kozubaev (OG) Goal scorers for Kyrgyzstan: Alimardon Shukurov
Saudi Arabia 0:2 Japan
The Samurai Blue continued their flawless performance in the World Cup qualifier on Thursday with a decisive victory over the Green Falcons of Arabia. Despite the valiant efforts of Roberto Mancini's squad, they proved no match for the Japanese, who showcased their dominance as the leading team in Asian football. Although Saudi Arabia enjoyed higher possession and took more shots than Japan, their efforts were rendered ineffective as the Japanese displayed greater efficiency in front of the goal. This victory keeps Japan at the top of the standings with a perfect record, while Saudi Arabia sits in 3rd place with 4 points. Goal scorers for Japan: Daichi Kamada, Koki Ogawa
Iraq 1:0 Palestine
The Lions of Mesopotamia secured a vital victory against a resilient Palestine in their latest World Cup qualifier. The Iraqi side, managed by Jesus Garcia, entered the match as clear favourites, demonstrating both physical and technical superiority. Aymen Hussein's decisive goal in the 31st minute proved to be the match-winner, allowing Iraq to claim all three points. Despite Palestine's determined efforts in the closing minutes, the Iraqi defense held firm, ensuring a clean sheet. With two wins from three matches, Iraq remains undefeated and sits in 2nd place in the standings, level on points with group leaders South Korea, while Palestine occupies the bottom position with 2 draws and 1 loss from three games. Goal scorer for Iraq: Aymen Hussein
