Yeah, this is actually helpful.

We've heard a lot, in the run-up to the election, about how a second Trump presidency will be worse than the first, because this time he's coming in with a plan and experience.

But experience cuts both ways, and people like the ACLU--and, we should hope, the outgoing administration, and the Democrats in Congress and state governorships, and judges who still remember their duty to the rule of law--are also coming in with a plan and experience they didn't have in 2016.

Last time, in 2016, I remember this period--between the election and the inauguration--being dominated by a sense of confusion and disbelief that he'd actually been elected. And the early phase of his presidency we spent a lot of time looking at each other and going, "Did that actually just happen? Did the president of the United States do/say that batshit thing we just saw him do/say?" The first response to his every piece of norm-breaking and outright overreach was to say, "Can he do that?" and then explain how either he technically could or technically couldn't, but was doing it anyway.

Now we know that those are all the wrong questions; the right question is, "He just did, so what are we going to do about it?"

Of course, even as I scramble to get ready to hit the road for months, I'm regrettably forced to give some rent-free space in my head to Elon Fucking Musk. This week, I wrote about DOGE as a government-scale private-equity style plundering of the nation:

But that was before I read Henry Farrell and Abraham Newman's Lawfare article about how Musk's seizure of payment chokepoints will allow him (and Trump) to surveil the entire economy and wield unilateral, unaccountable power:

In 2023, Farrell and Newman published an important book called Underground Empire, explaining how, during the War on Terror, GWB (and then Obama) weaponized global payment processing systems (most notably SWIFT) and other boring, technical systems, and then used them to wield enormous power around the world:

Farrell and Newman's point isn't merely that this power was used unwisely or cruelly, but also that the co-opted systems had an actual, useful, important job to do – a job that was only possible if these systems were widely viewed as credibly neutral and apolitical. The book ends with a sobering message about the chaos on the horizon if (when) other countries walk away from these system, leaving infrastructure vacuums in their wake. In their new Lawfare piece, Farrell and Newman imply not just that Musk and Trump are fashioning a powerful weapon out of the nation's digital infrastructure, but also that this could permanently undermine the vital national systems they're seizing control over, with no obvious candidates to replace them.

Meanwhile, the Democrats are still trying to find their asses with both hands, even as voters across the nation bombard them with demands to actually do something. I'm gonna call my senators and rep right after I finish this and remind them that when South Korea's autocratic president attempted a coup, lawmakers stormed the capital, leaping the fences while livestreaming to voters:

But not everyone is taking Musk's bullshit lying down. The AFL-CIO has led a coalition of unions in suing DOGE:

It's nice to see some inside/outside strategy underway. After all, Musk is cruel and disgusting, but he – and the lawyers and creeps who back him – are also very, very stupid, and they're fucking up all over the place.

Take shutting down the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the agency charged with defending America from financial predators (e.g. would-be usurers hoping to turn their social media sites into payment processing platforms). Under Biden's CFPB chief Rohit Chopra, the Bureau was an absolute powerhouse, adopting rules, investigating scammers, and punishing wrongdoers, all in service to the American people:

So naturally Musk and Trump have shut down the Bureau. But, as Adam Levitin writes for Credit Slips, this was a profoundly stupid move. You see, under Dodd-Frank – the post-2008 financial crisis law that created the CFPB – state attorneys general are empowered to enforce its rules. Those rules can't be amended or rescinded for so long as the CFPB is in a coma. What's more, any "violation of an enumerated consumer law is a violation of the Consumer Financial Protection Act," which can be gone after by state AGs. Another thing: the Truth in Lending Act has a threshold for small loans, below which the Act doesn't apply. The CFPB is supposed to adjust that threshold for inflation, but without a CFPB, that threshold will be frozen in amber like the federal minimum wage, bringing every-larger constellations of financial activity within scope for AG enforcement in any or every state in the Union. Also: none of this can be changed without a 60-vote Senate majority. Nice one, Elon:

That isn't the only way that Trump shot himself in the dick last week. As Luke Savage writes, threatening to put tariffs on Canadian goods (and to annex Canada and make it the 51st state) had a profound effect on Canadian politics:

Before last week, Justin Trudeau's political legacy seemed assured. His many leadership failures, along with a billionaire-funded dark-money hate-machine that targeted him with culture-war nonsense and climate denial all added up to record low approval ratings. It was so bad that Trudeau actually sent Parliament home (recklessly leaving Canada without a legislature on the eve of Trump's presidency) and resigned as Liberal Party leader.

A week ago, pretty much everyone in Canada figured that the Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre was about to romp to victory with a Ba'ath-style Parliamentary majority. Poilievre was and is an extraordinarily weak candidate, a guy who has literally never had a job except for "politician," who nevertheless ran as a political outsider, leading a coalition of racists, climate exterminationists, xenophobes, forced-birth militants, and other cryptofascists and low-tax brain-worm victims. The threat of a Poilievre government with a commanding majority was frankly terrifying. Think of him as someone with Trump's agenda and Mitch McConnell's ruthless administrative competence. Trump is bad enough – but smart Trump? Nightmare.

Then came the Trump tariffs and the annexation threats, and overnight, the Tories' 20-point lead narrowed to a two-point lead, which continues to shrink. Poilievre's brand boils down to "Make Canada America Again" – dismantle medicare, smash unions, punish immigrants, ban abortion. With Canadians booing the American anthem at NFL and NBA games and Quebecois demonstrators waving maple-leaf flags, this is not a good time to be running as the America guy.

Don't get me wrong. Trudeau is terrible. Bill Clinton terrible, say. But Poilievre? A fucking monster. Canada's political future may just have been rescued by Trump's big, stupid mouth. Thanks, eh?

Meanwhile, south of the border, our American cousins keep getting fed into the corporate woodchipper. It's been just over a year since Mainers went to the polls and voted in a Right to Repair law with an 83% majority. But a year later, the law is foundering, amid a corporate legal blitz led by the automakers, who have also put Massachusetts' massive popular 2020 Right to Repair law on ice with endless lawfare. :

This is the status quo in America. As a highly influential, widely cited 2014 peer-reviewed study found:

Speaking of which, how's things going with Uber?

This week, Hubert Horan, the aviation industry analyst whose writings on Uber are the most important analysis of the company's business, investor scams, wage theft, and lobbying, published his long-awaited 34th research note on the company:

This edition is devoted to Tony West, Uber's Chief Legal Officer, and also brother-in-law to Kamala Harris, as well as manager of her disastrous failure of a 2024 election campaign. West may have run a Democratic presidential campaign, but he epitomizes the corporate corruption that gave rise to Trump. As Horan writes, West's first major accomplishment at Uber was to get the company exonerated for intimidating customers who were raped by Uber drivers. But his obituary will lead with the fact that he got Prop 22 passed in Calfornia, legalizing Uber's worker misclassification gambit, which allows the company to pay well below minimum wage and evade all workplace protection laws.

It was West who tapped Silicon Valley's tech oligarchs for large-dollar donations to the Harris campaign, which presumably played a substantial role in Harri's unwillingness to take a tough line on Big Tech while on the trail, creating the (correct) impression among voters that Harris would stand up for big business over their own interests.

It's an important read, and it's a reminder that the Democrats lost the last election every bit as much as Trump won it, and that their paralysis in the face of a national crisis is absolutely in character for the Democratic Party.

But on the other hand, the antitrust surge in the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, and China (!) over the past five years are all the more remarkable and heartening in light of the dismal and corrupt state of world governments. After all, there is no billionaire-backed dark money lobby whipping up support for smashing corporate power. The antitrust victories of the 2020s marked a turning point – the first time in my memory when extremely popular policies that the wealthy hated triumphed.

Decapitating the agencies that made those policies won't change the enormous political rage that led to the antitrust surge. If anything, it will only feed it. Enforcers like Rohit Chopra, Lina Khan and Jonathan Kanter did brilliant, important work – but they were only able to do it because of us. They're out of office, but we're still here. Don't ever forget that.

I love to see how giving a name and a description to this phenomenon has captured and directed some of that rage. And for the record, it doesn't bother me at all that some of these people are using "enshittification" to mean "corporations fucking shit up" without regard to my formal definition of the process. As I wrote last October:

Many people apply the term "enshittification" very loosely indeed, to mean "something that is bad," without bothering to learn – or apply – the theoretical framework. This is good. This is what it means for a term to enter the lexicon: it takes on a life of its own. If 10,000,000 people use "enshittification" loosely and inspire 10% of their number to look up the longer, more theoretical work I've done on it, that is one million normies who have been sucked into a discourse that used to live exclusively in the world of the most wonkish and obscure practitioners. The only way to maintain a precise, theoretically grounded use of a term is to confine its usage to a small group of largely irrelevant insiders. Policing the use of "enshittification" is worse than a self-limiting move – it would be a self-inflicted wound.

And also: there's a lot of stuff that's just shitty right now, which is one of the reasons my word's putting up such great numbers. People are getting fed up with it, in ways large…and small. Take the post-pandemic trend of using your phone in speaker-mode in public places. I'm a prison abolitionist, but I'll make an exception for people who do this. Display 'em in stocks. Chain 'em up by their wrists. Or, you know, do what they do in France: fine them €150 for using a speakerphone on the train:

Daniel pocketed his uniform pants for his lighter and came up empty-handed. He let out a groan when he couldn't find the precious object. That meant he had to go back to the crew changing room and find it in his jacket. This whole exercise ate a minute from his precious 5. Maybe smoking cigarettes was a disgusting habit he should quit. But managing so many hotheaded people every day was getting a little bit too much for the 35 year old. And even though lately, he's been using some unorthodox methods of stress relief, good old nicotine was still a need.

He didn't expect to be stalled again, but he heard the others through the open back door. They were talking about you. Hearing them speak your name did something to him. Because it had practically become his, with the amount of times he'd whisper it, moan it, grunt it. But to see it followed by "isn't she so incompetent today" and "she looks fucking spaced out". Apparently someone even overheard you saying that you were feeling sick after the holidays. Daniel wonders why you would even show up. He has to hide in the trash room to avoid the gossiping smokers. Having to speed through his cigarette, his fingers still reek of nicotine as he holds his clipboard. He looks at it. At you. You've been at your shift for a couple of hours already, while he's only been around you for 15 minutes. You seemed fine. But as he looks at you from across the shitty fast food restaurant, he notices that you are slower. You're forgetting sauces or mispacking orders, forcing customers to have to circle the drive-through. The response time is in the dumps and you're fucking coughing. He can see you sneeze trying to blame it on dust. He is fucking livid. It all tips over when he sees you slink off to the drink station and drop a tablet into a sprite filled crew cup.

What the fuck were you doing? Were you serious going to take meds with a fucking soda on the job? That was it. He moves past you and asks you to come and check something about your mandatory lunch break times. You agree immediately, nodding. But that's not enough for Daniel.

"Can I get a verbal confirmation?" He says, testing you, teasing you, using his bedroom voice.

"Yes." You say finally, but your voice is rough and scratchy. He can hear you're sick. He gets even more pissed. Especially when you take your FDA disapproved drink and follow him. He locks the door behind you, and you're already scrambling to undress on the couch that's cramped in the corner.

"That's not why I called you in, Jesus. Are you ill? No, let me be clearer. Are you showing up sick to work, creating a health hazard for not only your colleagues but also the customers?" Daniel says, full manager mode. He half-listens to your spiel about how you already had time off for both Christmas Eve and the day after. Not that he didn't know, you two spent the holidays in "couples" mode, going on cute little winter dates, sharing hot cocoa and the like. But for the actual end of the night, he left you to "party" with your friends like it was traditional for you. What you failed to mention is that you cramped too many girls into your single small room. And as the host, with only one bed, you took the floor. Danny had an opening shift on the 25th, so presents and the rest were left for New Years. Which you only managed to get off thanks to a shift swap. Daniel remembered signing off on that, happily allocating you to a time slot close to his. That's why it's weird for him to tell you.

"Go home."

"No." You reply.

"I'm sorry, no?" He wonders. Since when did you wear the white button-down in the relationship?

"I work closing. Judging by the fact that Carlos came in before you, I'm guessing you do too. I wanna help you out. It's just a stuffy nose." You say, reaching out for your apron pocket. You mock press the nasal spray lightly.

"Put it on, then. Let's see it fix you." He says, eyes dark.

You roll your eyes slightly. You've never seen Danny pissed off at you. Yeah, he'd been a little mean when you'd mess up a few ice creams in a row or stall a customer. But that was just a front to dispel any "special treatment" rumors. Still, you take a funky position on the couch, tipping your head off it. Gotta tilt the spray in properly. You sniff and cough a little, opting to breathe from your mouth. Daniel just watches you, and feels complicated. He's sorry for you, and that you're suffering. He's pissed that you put yourself in that situation in the first place. His doll, too fucking nice to tell other people that they can take the floor since the gathering is in your fucking house. Livid that you hid this from him and that you're still not understanding that it's a big deal. Oh, he could teach you. Watching you like this reminds him of an article he thumbed through once in men's health or something. An upside down blowjob was supposed to feel very intense. That was one way to ensure you're breathing through your nose.

"You ever seen the old Spiderman movies, darling?" He asks as he bends down to kiss you. It takes getting used to. It's a bit clumsy, but you're on him, hot and needy. He remembers the last time he had a partner before you and how they were like a cat in heat when they were sick. Danny keeps kissing you, and smirks at your needy, yet nasal whine. Your breathing sounds a bit clearer, albeit the occasional interruption by a cough.

"Wanna try an Aussie cure? A big thick lozenge to remind you to listen." He suggests, palming his election. Daniel knows that even a little kissing has gotten you horny. He knows that his white uniform shirts and presses pants do it for you. The name tag too. Once you jokingly pinned it to your underwear, claiming that you'd wear it like that. After a "I'm sorry, manager Daniel, sir.", it's fine. You can breathe properly and finally get the hang of it. You hollow your cheeks and fucking moan at the relief of breathing properly again. You try to angle your tongue so it can brush against your boyfriend's tip and it works. After a few more thrusts, Danny's coming down your throat, instructing you to swallow it all. You do. You use the back of your apron to wipe any drool or snot from your face. You're ready to return to the floor when he stops you.

"I bet it is, but you have to learn, doll. This is your punishment for not staying home. Bad girls have to deal with this if they wanna stay until closing. Which you do, don't you?". He asks. "Just ask Liam, he's next in line for the promotion anyway. I don't care that he's just a crew trainer." Danny says, looking at you. You're close, he knows your tells. Your eyes closing, your legs that he has to keep spread, your bottom lip between your teeth.

"He went on lunch and refuses to clock back in." They reply.

"Shit, okay, just give me a sec to save this document.". In record time Daniel redresses you, sans bra and panties though. He makes sure your apron is around your neck and not your waist and helps you stand up. You can feel the icecube inside of you are about to plead for him to not do this. But there's no use. You deserve this. You played stupid games and now it's time to collect your stupid prizes. You just hope you can sneak out and take a five minute break when Danny lets you. You didn't wanna end up even more sick, after all.

so I had some thoughts on the burnout post but didn't want to hijack it so this is just my own rambling attempt to process the feelings I've been struggling with for two days which obviously not everyone wants to read, thus my putting a read more

I've been crying off and on for the past couple days which is really no surprise, and I've been trying to avoid political news and political posts. In fact, after this I plan to hide the political tags for a while, heavily curate my Reddit experience, and then do I don't even know what with all my new free time

because I don't talk about it a lot here, this is my fandom space, my casual space, and I'll sometimes post about personal stuff but almost never politics, but I am actually very political. 'member of multiple political mailing lists, have marched in many protests, write postcards to swing state voters' political. and I want to talk a little about why this defeat feels different. because this crushed me in a way that 2016 did not.

the thing is. over the past few days I've seen a lot of people talking about how if you didn't realize Trump was going to win, you live in a bubble. and I think to a certain extent that's true. we all have our little echo chambers. but for me, at least, and a lot of the people I know, it wasn't just that. it was this core certainty that Trump would not win, could not win, because surely our country wasn't like that. surely our fellow Americans were not like that. it wasn't about competency or about policy. it was about basic human decency. and that's what I feel like we lost. not an election. but any remaining belief we had that people are basically good.

because it seems they're not. at least not around here. the cold hard fact at the end of the day is that the majority of our country looked at a senile, racist, fascist criminal grifter [eta: how could I forget rapist in that description?] and either actively wanted him to hold the highest office in the land, or just didn't care whether or not he did. they know exactly what he's going to do, and they're fine with it. and that hurts so much that it is nearly unbearable.

how do you move on from that? how do you cope with the fact that there's something so deeply rotten at the core of your fellow man? how do you deal with that? how do you fight back?

I am full of so much grief that I literally don't know where to put it.

so I don't want to fight anymore. I'm tired. I'm nauseated. I'm angry. But most of all, I'm sad. I can't do it right now. and I think that's probably okay. I think in six weeks or six months I'll feel differently. but right now I just can't do it. and I think the most important thing really can be to take a step back and focus on something else. because I know these feelings are not productive. I know that there are still good people out there and there are still things worth fighting for. but right now, all I feel is this aching chasm where my faith in humanity used to be.

so I'm unplugging - not from fandom or tumblr, but from politics and news - for at least a little while. sometimes that's the most important thing to do if you want to still be able to get out of bed in the morning.

red: my biggest roadblock currently is that i'm just busy af at present with very little free time and next to no available brainpower when i do. it's been several weeks since i've gotten any good writing time in. but i'm hopeful i can get in a good groove again soon when work slows down in a couple of weeks.

i'm also a little stuck on the climax/conflict (which isn't really my strongest skill set in writing anyway). i've never written a movie au or anything like this really so i'm very excited but its challenging to try to work within canon AND a whole separate source of canon/plot. i'm reading a nonfiction book about writing (very very slowly) that i'm using to help me figure some bits out, so i'm hopeful i'll get it sorted and make it as good as I want it to be.

Solely because I know that not everyone has the means to change their appearance but they’re still just as valid and I wanted to represent that. I think as long as you do the proper research and tag appropriately, there's nothing wrong with that. I'm sure people will want to read it!

Just remember that some trans people choose not to do things like get surgery because they don't feel it's necessary. But you're right in saying that some want to do those things and cannot. Either way, I wouldn't say they 'haven't transitioned' because they still could have transitioned socially by dressing differently, using new pronouns, changing their name, etc. They just may not be taking hormones, getting surgery, etc.

Honestly, I would find some articles showing the negative effects of misgendering trans youth. Like the suicide rate of trans youth, the mental effects of dysphora, etc. Find articles that are from official sources, written by scientists and doctors. Adults like listening to other adults.

And I would also ask him why. Like let's say it is a phase (I'm not saying it actually is, but that's what he thinks, so if we go with his ideas), what's wrong with going with it and using the pronouns you want and the name you want, until the 'phase' is over? You're not asking for anything permanent. Like genuinely ask him who it's hurting.

Yeah I think people worry way too much about other peoples' labels. Labels can be important to people for themselves and that's fine, but who cares about other people? And you're right- sometimes the questions people as are so ridiculous and offensive.

Remember that it's okay not to know and it's okay to just not have a label. It's truly up to you and what you're comfortable with. There's no right or wrong and I don't think you're 'faking' anything. It's okay to take all the time you need to figure yourself out <3

ugh i had to go into my stats to find this number (hate looking at stats) but to my surprise that number is a whopping 816,828! (if added to my ff.net word count that figure grows to 1,062,375 🤯)

3. what fandoms do you write for?

stony exclusively, though i opened up to the idea of writing for steve and/or tony paired with any mcu villain for marvel trumps hate, and now i'm writing a steve/loki (with steve/tony as endgame) fic that's more fun than i would've anticipated! (x) still wouldn't call myself a "multishipper," though -- more of a serial shipping monogamist ;)

4. do you respond to comments? why or why not?

i do! sometimes i'm a bit slow to respond for various reasons (e.g. when people angels comment on my WIPs i like to reply when/right before a new chapter drops), and on a few occasions i've belatedly encountered comments that i forgot to reply to (😱) that i'll immediately rectify, but i very much want to encourage people to keep leaving them. a single comment—even short/sweet ones!—can be like rocket fuel to my creative drive -- and as someone who finds myself running on empty and trying to get by solely on fumes from time to time, getting that boost in my inbox is truly priceless.

currently steve/tony. once upon a time it was spock/kirk, and the flame burned so brightly that it troubles me to wonder how it ever managed to go out. i collected vintage zines. i made insanely thoughtful fanmixes (one of which i recorded onto cassette tapes one-at-a-time by hand through a painstaking process and distributed to a few like-minded folks, with hand-drawn cover art and liner notes!). i read AMAZING fic that changed my brain and yet i never wrote a single thing! i made a secret spacehusbands clubhouse underneath a pool table during one long and otherwise unhappy summer. i even made spirk-themed patches and pins that sold quite well on etsy, and turned one of my large back pieces into the central design of a fully decked-out jacket (which was made specifically to wear while loitering around disneyland while baked). here's some photographic evidence of all of the above:

8. what are your writing strengths?

smut-crafting is the obvious answer, but i flatter myself to think that i also manage to tap into a particular kind of haunted beauty that hovers about, casting its ethereal moon-shadow over all the most poignant relationships; something i've been obsessed with in life, that i'm compelled to pursue further in writing.

9. what are your writing weaknesses?

keeping it short. my punctuation can get pretty erratic sometimes. also, this might be a cop-out of an answer since it can be interpreted as a 'strength' but it really can throw me for a loop: i tend to let the characters tell the story 'they' want to tell rather than keeping a tight hold on the reins and sticking to my own agenda -- this can lead me off my intended course, for better or worse! as a storyteller i'm a bit of a pushover—always open to sudden inspiration wherever it might issue from—and steve and tony are such *strong* personalities that this openness can be a problem when i 'channel' them.

10. first fandom you wrote for?

harry potter. i was a bit of a snapewife for awhile there (don't judge). ff.net has been having some server issues so i recently logged back on to download my 245k unfinished epic from 2012, and found over a thousand people had left comments! some people were calling it a "masterpiece" and/or "the best fic [they] ever read [for that pairing]" which made me doubtful, so i skimmed over some of the story expecting it to be cringey but uhhh... it actually holds up? i mean, 2011/12 was quite a time for me: i was simultaneously finishing my thesis on "fandom, fanaticism, and religious fervor" and can recall having full-on religious experiences of my own while writing that [truly 'inspired'] fic, so i guess i was onto something after all!

I tend to give characters a lot of hcs, so if anything weirds you out, all I'm gonna say is ignore it, cuz few hcs may be real stuff I've dealt/deal with.

2024 Writing Round Up

This year I've published roughly 230k Words! Which is (sadly?) about the average for the last few years.

I participated in 2 events this year, Fandom Trumps Hate and Lokius Reverse bang. Which is literally double any event I have ever done. Look at me branching out.

I wrote for 4 fandoms this year, technically for six ships/pairings (a tie between Stizzy (Stede/Izzy) and Lokius (Loki/Mobius) each with three), which is also a record! Big year, 2024.

For the first time in I think seven years I'm still working on a fic into the new year, and for the first time since 2020 I didn't write a Holiday/Christmas story.

@loki-is-my-kink-awakening and @mobiusismycomfortcharacter tagged me for the round up. Thank you for tagging me so often, it's the most I've been tapped for anything fandom ever.

Not when you're stuck for eternity with someone who fed your darkest parts or who shot off your leg. And peace? What peace is there knowing the name and reputation you built is being put into jeopardy by some obsessive nutjob?

With all the loss the Doctor's experienced, he would have thought he would manage to keep his hopes and expectations low when Rose returns. She had, after all, done so with the Metacrisis, Handy - or John, as he's apparently called - as well as a mysterious interloper that evaded the Torchwood in Pete's World.

But something's off. With Rose, with Handy/John, and the whole thing that brought them over in the first place. And River's of no help, what with "Spoilers" being her only answer to anything. Which means the Doctor is inevitably going to be filled with hope that maybe, just maybe, he might be able to keep something this time.

Reality will probably break his hearts, even if it's not the way he expects it to.

Meanwhile, Mobius is trying his best to live a life on the Time Line, to really take in what Loki gave up any sort of life to protect. But try as he might, Mobius can't help but dwell on what could have been, and is plagued by dreams that are starting to feel more like memories. Missions with Loki he'd never been on, conversations they never had.

One More Chance to Be Near You (WIP)

It's going to take Loki centuries to learn what needs to be done to fix the loom and save the TVA. It seems logical, then, to go back to well before the "Time Keepers" were in place and try and spend the time he wasn't reading or asking OB questions with Mobius. It's only when he gets there that Loki realizes how ill-thought-out that was, especially since Mobius seems to have a life that is not only comfortable but also doesn't need the God of Mischief peppering himself in. At least not in any way that isn't strictly professional.

The vaguest idea of a plan that may or may not be exactly what he and his friends need to bring the God of Stories back to them.

So the previous poster had tags of "I couldn't give out any candy with peanut butter in it because of the outbreaks".

WHICH UNLOCKED MY SPECIAL INTEREST so here we goooo

Today, children, we're going to learn about something called The Peanut Corporation of America. See, in 2008, the PCA was the largest American provider of candied peanut butter, which is just peanut butter mixed with powdered sugar. That candied peanut butter is why your homemade Reese's or Nutter Butters taste a little different than the real thing. (And it's super easy to make, protip, you're welcome.) So that candied peanut butter has a ton of regulations to it, as it should, because peanut butter is prone to salmonella if not processed properly. And in 2008, this PCA corp sickened a bunch of people.

So what happened, it turned out, was the Food Safety Coordinator of the PCA, Mary Wilkerson, emailed her boss, Stewart Parnell, and said "Yo boss, we can't sell this batch of peanut butter. It's got hella salmonella in it." And that boss went "Mary, if you want to keep your job, you're going to sell it anyway. It's fine. People are resilient. And that recall is way too much money to lose, so sell it."

And then ~750 people got sick *and nine people died*.

Now, when this happened, it resulted in the then-largest food recall in the United States, involving 46 states, over 360 companies, and over 3,900 different products! Because this was a small but key ingredient in a ton of things! And because of regulations at the time, these people *went to fucking jail*.

Mary? Five years, because she was a foot soldier who nonetheless did not do her job well enough to stop this from happening. Stewart, the CEO? 30 years. His brother, the VP? 28 years. Yep, these two dudes are still in prison.

But what does that have to do with today?

Weakened regulations have allowed these two motherfuckers to almost-successfully file that they shouldn't have gone to jail *for killing nine and sickening 750* because "we only broke a regulation, it should be a fine". A fine. For getting hundreds sick and killing nine people. All because they failed to self-regulate properly. Mary WAS the self-regulator. That's what a Food Safety professional DOES. She went to jail for NOT seeing the fuckery going on and calling the FDA/USDA on them, because that WAS HER JOB. So weakening the self-regulations of the slaughterhouses is essentially giving us more Mary's of the world, but now they won't go to jail for not doing THEIR JOB.

These motherfuckers are ALSO trying to lobby to GET OUT OF JAIL EARLY because "weh, we're old, we're tired, but we're not sorry". Yeah? Tell that to the old, tired folks who FUCKING DIED eating your poison candy!

Sure. Except they weren't eating raw oysters, which comes with that warning and is thus something that can sort-of be reasonably avoided. They were eating homemade things, like a peanutbutter cookie made from a grandchild. Or a PBJ sandwich. And also, peanut butter is a recognized healthy snack for immunocompromised folks because of the vitamin E that's supposed to help boost your immune system. And all of the peanut butter used was commercially packaged, which is assumed safe, *because of the regulations*.

What does all this have to do with Trump?

The above post mentioned the Boar's Head recall, a recall that is just as extensive as this one. 7 MILLION pounds of stuff have been recalled for listeria. That's wild! Two people, as of July, have died! And there's no call yet on if any of this is going to result in a change of regulation or not. I'm hoping that's because it's too soon to tell. But we don't yet know.

The weakening regulations are a problem because that implies that we believe that the honor system will stop something like this from happening again. But as we've seen time and again from problems like this, these corporations have lawyers specifically hired to find loopholes in laws like this to avoid jailtime. And the less regulations there are, the wider those loopholes get, and the easier these bastards can slip through. Mary was the honor system. She failed it. Others will, too.

Regulations are written in blood. They are formed because people had to die for them to be recognized as things that needed to be regulated. And easing those regulations is spitting on the graves of those who died because of greedy motherfuckers. And sure, maybe Boar's Head isn't full of greedy motherfuckers, and this was an oversight that turned deadly. Okay, that happens. But manslaughter is a criminal charge for a reason, it forces people to be careful or to face the consequences of their actions. And weakening regulations makes it so the consequences are just "bad press for a while".

Bad press doesn't prevent the dead.

for most of my followers who arent american and dont know; theres massive protests going on all over the country today but most are gathering in DC to protest trump. We have been planning this day for a month, since the last protest of march 4.

I just saw a palestine voter talking about marching for palestine today. not going to the protests because palestine is your main concern (when it should really be the COUNTRY YOURE IN RIGHT NOW), but rather making an entirely new protest just for palestine.

Do you people not get it yet?? do you not get that half of these palestine voters are nothing more than bots and governmental agents set out to cause disharmony and to take away the spotlight from what matters NOW?

They did (and still are doing) this during the height of the genocide, spamming people back to back with gofundme scams and the idiots ACTUALLY FELL FOR IT AND POSTED IT ALL IN THE #FREEPALESTINE TAG so now you cant find ANY actual posts in that tag. you cant find ANY information or real resources. all you can find are scam requests and people advocating for the scam requests.

They did it during the weeks leading up to the US election, sowing this idea that kamala would be worse for palestine. literally saying that protesting for palestine (which does literally nothing btw) was way more important than preventing a dictator from taking office. Half the country didnt vote because of people and bots like this.

And now, theyre doing it during the protests to try and distract people from what really matters. which do you think the federal news stations are going to show and talk about? do you think theyre going to show people all over the country protesting the false president and his goons, or do you think they're going to reroll the same footage of the palestine protests all week long?
