Yeah, this is actually helpful.

We've heard a lot, in the run-up to the election, about how a second Trump presidency will be worse than the first, because this time he's coming in with a plan and experience.

But experience cuts both ways, and people like the ACLU--and, we should hope, the outgoing administration, and the Democrats in Congress and state governorships, and judges who still remember their duty to the rule of law--are also coming in with a plan and experience they didn't have in 2016.

Last time, in 2016, I remember this period--between the election and the inauguration--being dominated by a sense of confusion and disbelief that he'd actually been elected. And the early phase of his presidency we spent a lot of time looking at each other and going, "Did that actually just happen? Did the president of the United States do/say that batshit thing we just saw him do/say?" The first response to his every piece of norm-breaking and outright overreach was to say, "Can he do that?" and then explain how either he technically could or technically couldn't, but was doing it anyway.

Now we know that those are all the wrong questions; the right question is, "He just did, so what are we going to do about it?"

so I had some thoughts on the burnout post but didn't want to hijack it so this is just my own rambling attempt to process the feelings I've been struggling with for two days which obviously not everyone wants to read, thus my putting a read more

I've been crying off and on for the past couple days which is really no surprise, and I've been trying to avoid political news and political posts. In fact, after this I plan to hide the political tags for a while, heavily curate my Reddit experience, and then do I don't even know what with all my new free time

because I don't talk about it a lot here, this is my fandom space, my casual space, and I'll sometimes post about personal stuff but almost never politics, but I am actually very political. 'member of multiple political mailing lists, have marched in many protests, write postcards to swing state voters' political. and I want to talk a little about why this defeat feels different. because this crushed me in a way that 2016 did not.

the thing is. over the past few days I've seen a lot of people talking about how if you didn't realize Trump was going to win, you live in a bubble. and I think to a certain extent that's true. we all have our little echo chambers. but for me, at least, and a lot of the people I know, it wasn't just that. it was this core certainty that Trump would not win, could not win, because surely our country wasn't like that. surely our fellow Americans were not like that. it wasn't about competency or about policy. it was about basic human decency. and that's what I feel like we lost. not an election. but any remaining belief we had that people are basically good.

because it seems they're not. at least not around here. the cold hard fact at the end of the day is that the majority of our country looked at a senile, racist, fascist criminal grifter [eta: how could I forget rapist in that description?] and either actively wanted him to hold the highest office in the land, or just didn't care whether or not he did. they know exactly what he's going to do, and they're fine with it. and that hurts so much that it is nearly unbearable.

how do you move on from that? how do you cope with the fact that there's something so deeply rotten at the core of your fellow man? how do you deal with that? how do you fight back?

I am full of so much grief that I literally don't know where to put it.

so I don't want to fight anymore. I'm tired. I'm nauseated. I'm angry. But most of all, I'm sad. I can't do it right now. and I think that's probably okay. I think in six weeks or six months I'll feel differently. but right now I just can't do it. and I think the most important thing really can be to take a step back and focus on something else. because I know these feelings are not productive. I know that there are still good people out there and there are still things worth fighting for. but right now, all I feel is this aching chasm where my faith in humanity used to be.

so I'm unplugging - not from fandom or tumblr, but from politics and news - for at least a little while. sometimes that's the most important thing to do if you want to still be able to get out of bed in the morning.

Now, trump (at time of writing) is slated to win his second term in presidency. What does ðat mean?

Well for one, it means you can stop worrying about putting kamala in office. She's out, and isn't coming back. What can we expect from trump? Noþing, he's a puppet and a hose for whatever his party wishes to do, which is mostly ðe rich and monopoly companies.

Ðis is what you are to do.

1. Make Friends

Gaðer your community. Friends, enemies, acquaintances, relatives, everyone around you, and make friends.

Friends will watch each oðer's backs, friends will help each oðer grow, and most importantly, friends will stand by you when you go to your representatives to tell ðem what you want.

Fascists only took Germany because ðey could separate ðe people, so take your new president as your target and move! Vote in local elections, vote for district judges, vote on new bills, not just for a desk in a marble building.

2. Go to (your state).gov

Ðis is where you'll find most of what you'll need. News on state activities, where to vote, how to apply for government jobs, etc. To find Representatives, I'd recommend using (www.house.gov), or (www.congress.gov).

Now ðat you have information, use it. Inform your friends of local news, bills, and voting times. Explain to your friends what certain bills aim to do and what ðey can do. Donate to Wikipedia so we don't lose a major information highway. You get ðe picture.

Lastly, and you cannot forget ðis,

3. Don't worry about it

I'm serious, don't.

Trump is going to try to push project whatever? Vote against it and ask your representatives to do ðe same, after ðat, follow up if it still makes you nervous but you can't let it take too much of your mental healþ.

Half ðe country could but didn't vote in ðe presidential election? Ðey always did ðat, now ðey will learn not to.

Are you scared of what ðe people around you might do to you? So are ðey of you! Make friends to show ðat you are no þreat, and ðey will reciprocate!

In conclusion,

Get togeðer, wield information and strengþ in equal measure, and let your fear fuel you, not control you.

Eddie didn't really mind pointing things out to Steve, things that the other boy easily missed. He did mind the fact that Steve wouldn't admit he didn't see them though.

Eddie would point out an upcoming speedbump when Steve seemingly wasn't slowing down, and Steve would swear up and down that he was getting there, that he knew. Eddie would point out a tape that had fallen to the ground at family video, and Steve would parrot back the same "I know, I know!" like he wasn't just about to step on it. Eddie would point to a cabinet of the kitchenette in his trailer, asking Steve to grab something from it, and just watch as Steve reached for the wrong cabinet before saying "your other left" like nothing happened. But he wouldn't get complacent.

He couldn't bare the thought of 'what if Steve misses something on the road' or 'what if he trips and gets one too many blows to the head' and god forbid 'how could he ever navigate the upside down if it reopens'.

Eddie was going to make sure Steve got glasses, hell, even those new extended-wear contacts that he knew Steve could afford. Eddie was going to make Steve see, if not for Steve, then for his own sake.

Steve wasn't necessarily thrilled with the concept. He was at work when

"What if I look dinky with glasses? I feel like they'd throw off my charm." Steve said, doing his best to keep a joking tone.

"What if your eyesight keeps getting worse and you can't see what you look at all, dinky or not?" Eddie retorted back, playing the trump card, "Look, I'll even go with you to pick them out if you want. Get a pair of 20/20 eyes to help out."

"Would you really go with me? Robin's been pestering me for ages but I've never actually committed to even getting my eyes looked at."

"'Course I would Stevie, there's no way I'm letting you see anyone else face before mine. Gotta be the first." He joked, giving a bow, "How's next Thursday sound? You have no work, I have no plans."

"Aw you know my work schedule, how sweet." Steve replied sarcastically, "Yeah, next Thursday works."

And then, the next customer came in, and Eddie wandered off to pretend he actually came in for a tape.

When Steve came out of the optometrist's room, he seemed pretty dejected.

"Severe hyperopic astigmatism in both eyes, just like my dad."

"It runs in the family? And you still never got glasses?"

"Oh it gets better." Steve chose to ignore the question, "They've never seen it this bad in someone so young unless they had severe head trauma."

"Steve, you have had severe head trauma-"

"What they don't know won't kill them, hopefully. You wanna explain the Upside Down?"

"Got me there, Stevie."

"Anyways, they say the prescription is fairly common, so depending on the pair I pick I could walk out with them today, if they have the lenses." Steve walked to the front of the shop, looking at the wall of glasses, hunting down any wire-rimmed pairs, the ones the doctor said would most likely have lenses in his script.

"So what are we looking for?" Eddie asked.

"Anything other than circles. That's what my dad wore. Or, wears. I don't really know. Oh, and also wire framed, the doctor said those were more likely to have these lenses." Steve waved the paper the doctor had given him with his prescription as he squinted at the display.

"Let's get to work then!"

Luckily for Steve, he could make out the thumbs up or thumbs down Eddie would give him when he tried on a pair. He sat down with one of the hand-held mirrors and his pick of five frames. He held the mirror as far as possible so he could see them, even getting Eddie to hold it when he was narrowing down the final two, squinting at himself, picking apart his reflection in the mirror. Just when Eddie was about to tell Steve which pair was his favorite, he got cut off.

"Can I help you two?" The attendant in the room finally asked, making Steve jump a little.

"Uhm, no, thank you! Just trying to narrow down which pair to buy."

"Let me see your script and the glasses, I'll look at the tag and see if we have those lenses in." She said, pulling out a little clipboard with a list of the common scripts, those with none left crossed-out.

She stared at it for a moment, adjusting her own glasses in the process.

"Looks like we have the lenses for only one of these, my dear. Of course, you can still get the others! You'll just have about a week's wait until we have those lenses."

"Which pair has the lenses in stock?" Steve asked.

The lady passed him the navy blue square framed pair with the nice and neat rounded corners. Eddie's favorite out of the two.

"Hmm. If I get this pair, I can walk out today with them right?"

"Yes! If you get this pair I can have them done in about 20 minutes, just need to pop the right lenses in and tighten some screws."

"I'll take this pair then, thank you!" Steve said, following the rest of her instructions to go ahead and pay for them while she rifles through the drawers for the farsighted lenses, finding his exact prescription.

"Lucky boy, got the last pair of these lenses in stock!"

"Lucky Stevie!" Eddie nudged Steve.

"Yeah, lucky me." He smiled.

Still though, Steve let his mind wander wild as he waited for the little old lady to finish his glasses.

"What if they really do look silly?"

"Steve you're not gonna look silly. I promise you looked amazing in the display pair." Eddie did his best to sound reassuring.

"Amazing? Like. How much on a scale of 1-10?" Steve regained his flirty nature.

"Like, an eleven, Stevie." Eddie looked away, not willing to let Steve see the blush rise to his cheeks.

"11/10? He does have a nice bone in his body." Steve teased, before the lady called Steve up to the counter with a mirror and his case, his glasses in her hand. Eddie followed in tow.

"It might take a minute, to adjust. Try to look around, read the liscense plates in the parking lot, or something like that." She held her open hand out to Steve and he picked up the glasses, closing his eyes before sliding them on.

And then he opened his eyes. He saw the detail on the counter, not a blank flat color but a salt-and-pepper spattering of greys and blacks. He read the lady's name tag, Caroline's name tag, before realizing that he didn't know her name until then. He looked at his hands, seeing detail that he had never seen before, saw the littler moles that peppered his arms.

He saw Eddie, saw that little smirk he wore in all of it's detail, saw the long eyelashes that framed his eyes, saw the crinkle in his nose.

"Oh my god-" Steve said, his hands dropping to his side, "The world is so much more beautiful than I remembered." He stared for a second longer at Eddie's eyes, the dark brown glowing a little in the setting sun through the windows.

"Thank you, so much for all your help," Steve told the lady -Caroline, he knew her name now- as he grabbed his case, not stopping to look at himself but striding out the door, to look at the detail of the sidewalk, see the little scratch on his beamer that he had never been more excited to see. He turned around to look at Eddie again, see the pride in his eyes.

"Let's get you home, shall we? Since you can, y'know, see this time."

"Let's."

He drove Eddie home, pointed out every new thing he could see, and stepped out of his car to walk Eddie to his door.

Eddie stopped before the stairs to his trailer.

"So, Stevie, did you have a good day?"

"I feel like the world is so much brighter now." Steve said, his eyes flicking to every movement in Eddie's face at that response. His eyes settled on the strand of hair that fell as Eddie shook his head.

"Feel like it's so much softer too." Steve pushed the hair back behind Eddie's ear as he talked, letting his hand linger just a second.

"Weirdly, enough, me too." Eddie pressed his hand against Steve's.

The sun was setting, nobody was out in the trailer park, and in the June heat of Indiana, no windows were cracked either. Behind the privacy of Eddie's van, parked to the left of where Steve's car was sitting, Steve couldn't help himself.

"Eddie, today was wonderful, even when I was slightly panicking. Thank you for being there, you have no idea what it means."

"I think I might." Eddie noticed Steve staring at his lips, and, hopefully not misinterpreting a sign, finally asked, "Steve, can I kis-"

"Please." Steve cut him off, before giving Eddie the kiss he so desperately had wanted since the moment he saw his face that afternoon. Steve was so glad Eddie's was the first face he saw.

It's depressing that people stop boycotting a company when their favorite thing comes out…

Yes, I'm speaking as a GF fan and I understand that Bill's book brings back those emotions from years ago, but remember, Disney will get the money and it sucks, especially when Disney boasted about financial support for Israel and publicly

It's depressing that many collections cannot reach everyone (And you often have to write to ask people to share, otherwise they don't do it, which sucks, because collections should be shared to reach people who can help, I understand, I I can't make payments, currency, I don't work and I don't have a bank account, and if I wanted to donate to collections, unfortunately I would have to do it virtually, I don't have a bank account because I don't work, because I have a second degree of disability and it makes it impossible for me to find a job)

wasn't gonna do this bc i thought nobody probably really cares about this stuff but since i got double tagged by @meidui and @sunnysideprincess here goes nothing:

1. how many works do you have on AO3?

2. what’s your total AO3 word count?

ugh i had to go into my stats to find this number (hate looking at stats) but to my surprise that number is a whopping 816,828! (if added to my ff.net word count that figure grows to 1,062,375 🤯)

3. what fandoms do you write for?

stony exclusively, though i opened up to the idea of writing for steve and/or tony paired with any mcu villain for marvel trumps hate, and now i'm writing a steve/loki (with steve/tony as endgame) fic that's more fun than i would've anticipated! (x) still wouldn't call myself a "multishipper," though -- more of a serial shipping monogamist ;)

4. do you respond to comments? why or why not?

i do! sometimes i'm a bit slow to respond for various reasons (e.g. when people angels comment on my WIPs i like to reply when/right before a new chapter drops), and on a few occasions i've belatedly encountered comments that i forgot to reply to (😱) that i'll immediately rectify, but i very much want to encourage people to keep leaving them. a single comment—even short/sweet ones!—can be like rocket fuel to my creative drive -- and as someone who finds myself running on empty and trying to get by solely on fumes from time to time, getting that boost in my inbox is truly priceless.

7. what’s your all-time favorite ship?

currently steve/tony. once upon a time it was spock/kirk, and the flame burned so brightly that it troubles me to wonder how it ever managed to go out. i collected vintage zines. i made insanely thoughtful fanmixes (one of which i recorded onto cassette tapes one-at-a-time by hand through a painstaking process and distributed to a few like-minded folks, with hand-drawn cover art and liner notes!). i read AMAZING fic that changed my brain and yet i never wrote a single thing! i made a secret spacehusbands clubhouse underneath a pool table during one long and otherwise unhappy summer. i even made spirk-themed patches and pins that sold quite well on etsy, and turned one of my large back pieces into the central design of a fully decked-out jacket (which was made specifically to wear while loitering around disneyland while baked). here's some photographic evidence of all of the above:

8. what are your writing strengths?

smut-crafting is the obvious answer, but i flatter myself to think that i also manage to tap into a particular kind of haunted beauty that hovers about, casting its ethereal moon-shadow over all the most poignant relationships; something i've been obsessed with in life, that i'm compelled to pursue further in writing.

9. what are your writing weaknesses?

keeping it short. my punctuation can get pretty erratic sometimes. also, this might be a cop-out of an answer since it can be interpreted as a 'strength' but it really can throw me for a loop: i tend to let the characters tell the story 'they' want to tell rather than keeping a tight hold on the reins and sticking to my own agenda -- this can lead me off my intended course, for better or worse! as a storyteller i'm a bit of a pushover—always open to sudden inspiration wherever it might issue from—and steve and tony are such *strong* personalities that this openness can be a problem when i 'channel' them.

10. first fandom you wrote for?

harry potter. i was a bit of a snapewife for awhile there (don't judge). ff.net has been having some server issues so i recently logged back on to download my 245k unfinished epic from 2012, and found over a thousand people had left comments! some people were calling it a "masterpiece" and/or "the best fic [they] ever read [for that pairing]" which made me doubtful, so i skimmed over some of the story expecting it to be cringey but uhhh... it actually holds up? i mean, 2011/12 was quite a time for me: i was simultaneously finishing my thesis on "fandom, fanaticism, and religious fervor" and can recall having full-on religious experiences of my own while writing that [truly 'inspired'] fic, so i guess i was onto something after all!

This is a sideblog-to-a-sideblog for Reasons for Hope, because I want to promote actions and spread awareness for things that don't always fit on a good news blog specifically

For context: Queer, trans, disabled, white, USian, for context.

Let me know if I post something offensive, I promise I have practice fixing things when I mess up instead of lashing out at the person who told me. I don't want to post hurtful things, so I genuinely want to always learn more about how to not do that, even when it's uncomfortable.

This is all very long because I'm still incapable of being concise.

About This Blog

Made this blog because I keep wanting to reblog or post about actions people can take, but didn't want to put them on Reasons for Hope unless they were actually mostly good news.

As a person who's Been There with spiraling, I really get the need to have access to a space that you know will contain good news and ONLY good news, in this day and age.

Also made it because I have Opinions and want to talk about Issues and activism and I'm committed to not doing that on my good news blog unless it involves, again, actual good news.

So, follow if you want! I definitely invite people to send in actions (links to campaigns/petitions/major protests/letter writing campaigns/etc.) specifically as submissions. I'll put up a how-to and link it here at some point, bc I've learned from Reasons for Hope that if they're in ask format I won't usually have the time/energy to reformat that/make it into a post.

(Sorry to people who've sent asks in on there, you're great. I'll switch to a submissions-based attempted system there too once I get the chance. May be a minute, I'm about to start a new job(!!).

My Editorial Standards

My usual editorial standards from Reasons for Hope apply, modified for this sort of blog:

Any donation-related posts/submissions need to be from some kind of established organization. It can be super grassroots etc. but I need to be able to verify that it's not a scam.

For that reason, no personal fundraisers/gofundmes. I'm genuinely sorry about this because I know a lot of people need the help but like I say on Reasons for Hope, there's no way to truly vet the vast majority of those posts, and I really don't have the time to try.

I'll come up with some sort of tag to put on all the particularly upsetting/fucked content so people can filter it and just see the action posts. Preferably something unique so it doesn't screen out other people's posts if you want to filter

I'll also have a tag for any particularly upsetting/fucked informational/educational things I post, because I do want to help spread awareness about a number of things, some of which will be pretty upsetting.

That said, I'll try to keep those informational posts only to things that are solutions-focused and/or have an element of good news or hopeful updates, where possible.

I'll also keep most of those posts behind a read-more where possible.

I will not post any campaigns or actions for reelecting Joe Biden until either the genocide in Gaza ends, or until September 1, 2024 (the month early voting starts).

Why do I have that policy? Because Joe Biden is absolutely committing war crimes, but Donald Trump would still, in fact be worse, for the US in general, for BIPOC in the US in particular, and for Palestinians/Gaza. I made a post about this with more details that I'll link here at some point.

Everything is going to be labeled with the link's source, the organization running it, the date posted (if identifiable), and the dates of the campaign/campaign deadline.

Re: Posting bad news here

I've been thinking about starting this sideblog-to-a-sideblog for a while now, because there are a lot of actions/campaigns/etc. that I really wanted to help promote, but did not want to put on Reasons for Hope, because I'm trying really hard to keep that limited to actual, you know, reasons for hope.

That said, I will be including upsetting stuff here. It will have its own tag for people to filter if they only want to see the links to actions. But I am committed to including it.

That's partly because there are a lot of issues that very people know about, and I believe a lot in the power of spreading knowledge/awareness.

It's also because of the reason I finally stopped pondering and decided to start this blog: I just found out tonight that my grandfather died young because of toxic radiation from a nuclear meltdown at a super dangerous and experimental nuclear reactor, which the US government covered up completely and continued operating for decades. Right next to Los Angeles. btw.

If you live in or near Simi Valley, Chatsworth, or the West San Fernando Valley, or your parents did, get high-risk-level-appropriate cancer screenings. And if you're in Simi or within like 5 miles of it...probably don't drink the tap water. Also maybe try to move. (Consulting with a public health scientist/activist friend about this, will report back.)

I was already anti-nuclear, including anti-nuclear power, because of the absolute devastation it's done, especially to Indigenous communities and Japanese civilians. I didn't want to get into it on Reasons for Hope because of the whole "urgency of climate change" thing. But suffice to say that being anti-nuclear just shot very far up my "activism priorities" list.

None of this, or any other horrific things I may post about, conflict with or ruin my faith in humanity. I've definitely been incredibly pessimistic and misanthropic in my life.

But I believe that, for all the bad and evil things humans do, there is equal or greater potential for good. I believe it's like they say: "Hurt people hurt people." That's not the case always, but it is very often. Now, for the first time in history, we have the physical ability to end starvation and scarcity and a lot of death and suffering. We're still getting there, though we still have a long way to go.

I believe in a future where we can all hurt each other (and the other life around us) far less. I believe in a future where we have beaten and reserved at climate change.

I want to live to see that future, and I want all of you to get the chance to see it with me.

2024 Writing Round Up

This year I've published roughly 230k Words! Which is (sadly?) about the average for the last few years.

I participated in 2 events this year, Fandom Trumps Hate and Lokius Reverse bang. Which is literally double any event I have ever done. Look at me branching out.

I wrote for 4 fandoms this year, technically for six ships/pairings (a tie between Stizzy (Stede/Izzy) and Lokius (Loki/Mobius) each with three), which is also a record! Big year, 2024.

For the first time in I think seven years I'm still working on a fic into the new year, and for the first time since 2020 I didn't write a Holiday/Christmas story.

@loki-is-my-kink-awakening and @mobiusismycomfortcharacter tagged me for the round up. Thank you for tagging me so often, it's the most I've been tapped for anything fandom ever.

When it comes to rest, there's no sleep in the afterlife. And while one could argue being where you were happiest with what makes you happiest could be restful, that's really not the case. Not when you're stuck for eternity with someone who fed your darkest parts or who shot off your leg. And peace? What peace is there knowing the name and reputation you built is being put into jeopardy by some obsessive nutjob?

Somewhere in Your Universe

With all the loss the Doctor's experienced, he would have thought he would manage to keep his hopes and expectations low when Rose returns. She had, after all, done so with the Metacrisis, Handy - or John, as he's apparently called - as well as a mysterious interloper that evaded the Torchwood in Pete's World.

But something's off. With Rose, with Handy/John, and the whole thing that brought them over in the first place. And River's of no help, what with "Spoilers" being her only answer to anything. Which means the Doctor is inevitably going to be filled with hope that maybe, just maybe, he might be able to keep something this time.

Reality will probably break his hearts, even if it's not the way he expects it to.

Meanwhile, Mobius is trying his best to live a life on the Time Line, to really take in what Loki gave up any sort of life to protect. But try as he might, Mobius can't help but dwell on what could have been, and is plagued by dreams that are starting to feel more like memories. Missions with Loki he'd never been on, conversations they never had.

One More Chance to Be Near You (WIP)

It's going to take Loki centuries to learn what needs to be done to fix the loom and save the TVA. It seems logical, then, to go back to well before the "Time Keepers" were in place and try and spend the time he wasn't reading or asking OB questions with Mobius. It's only when he gets there that Loki realizes how ill-thought-out that was, especially since Mobius seems to have a life that is not only comfortable but also doesn't need the God of Mischief peppering himself in. At least not in any way that isn't strictly professional.

The vaguest idea of a plan that may or may not be exactly what he and his friends need to bring the God of Stories back to them.

He could pray. He should pray. If this was going the way he suspected it was, he wasn’t much longer for this world and it was probably a good idea to say some holy words on his way out.

I was so excited to invite @caroll-in for our March Happy Hour! I did it as a little treat for myself - I've loved and been a fan of her art for such a long time (I love the bold lines, bright smiles, and the way she does hair. My favorite part is how she draws people who look like they're having a good time with each other! Partners look happy together.) I've been so excited to see what recommendation she'd come up with. She did such a lovely job, and even was able to find a rec that I hadn't read yet! I fell in love with her recommendation and I think you will too! Without making you wait any longer - here is the lovely @caroll-in!

I can't even describe the joy I felt upon receiving an invitation from @thedrarrylibrarian to be the guest of the March Happy Hour! It's an honour to be able to contribute a rec to this fantastic blog!

I'm gonna take this opportunity and rec a fic I’ve always wanted to do a proper post about as it's one of my all-time favorite long fics in the drarry fandom. Written for the @hd-fan-fair fest of 2021, it was the very first fic by Romaine that I have ever read and, most importantly, Romaine's comeback to the fandom after an almost decade-long break. And what an epic comeback it was!

This Ain't the Garden of Eden by @romaine2424 (131,466 words, rated E)

In 2020, Hit Wizard Harry is starting to enjoy his life. He’s divorced, and no longer Head Auror. His biggest project these days is trying to remodel 12 Grimmauld Place for him and the kids.

Draco Malfoy is recovering from his wife’s death. But is happy with his Ministry position as Temporary Head of the Department of Intoxicating Substances, and with his son who he adores.

This all changes quickly when Minister Shacklebolt decides not to run for another term. The assumption is that 'all is well' in the British Magical world, and that Hermione Granger-Weasley will easily be voted in as the next Minister for Magic. However, Draco knows better. He knows she has a strong competitor who is wooing those who live in Knockturn. And if he wins, the Ministry, and all that has been accomplished the previous twenty odd years, will be destroyed.

"This Ain't the Garden of Eden'' is a brilliant political fic following Harry's campaign to become the Minister for Magic. What I feel is the most important thing to point out here are his motivations to become a candidate in the first place. This Harry is one we all know and love but since he's in his forties, he's also more mature and has had a chance to figure himself out throughout the years. Even though he very much still enjoys the thrill and action (which he has plenty of, working as a Hit Wizard when we first meet him in the story) he also still cares and is ready to step up and help however he can—this time without being manipulated. Everything he does is done through his own decisions. I love how well Romaine executed that part because after people pulling the strings behind his back for half his life, it's really heartwarming to see Harry still wanting to save the Wizarding World, on his own terms. He won't take the risk of losing everything he and his friends worked for after the War—especially when he realizes how much still can and should be improved. His main political opponent (I hope it won't be too much of a spoiler to say this) is based on Trump and brilliantly so, making the reader root all the more for Harry's success. And for those of you worried it might be too much politics for your taste, please note the "case fic" and "action/adventure" tags on the story which very much *deliver*.

Romaine takes the well-known canon world and expands it, making it so full of details and innovative magical theory (which I bet y'all are fans of as much as I am!) and introduces us to many new magical places, not only in the UK. It might not be a fic about Wizarding Houses and Grimmauld Place per se, but I promise you—those of you who enjoy this trope won't be disappointed either as the fic features a stellar subplot catering to it. We also get a new take on the Knockturn community and their culture and meet many new brilliantly-written original characters who I couldn't help but fall in love with (and I am sure you will too!). Of course, I also have a lot of love for Romaine's characterisations of the characters we know from canon—from Ron, Hermione and the Potters' kids to Scorpius and Narcissa. And Kingsley Shacklebolt, who very much deserves his own shoutout here—I can honestly say it's my very favourite take on him and I'm not being dramatic, he *is* fantastic in this story and I can't wait for you guys to meet him!

And finally: DRARRY. I deliberately saved the most important aspect of this fic for last and I hope I didn't give you the impression this story isn't about them! The main plot circles around the elections and is super captivating on its own, but it's Harry and Draco's relationship we're all here for and the way Romaine wrote them is honestly perfect! As I already mentioned, they're in their forties and, therefore, more experienced and more mature, willing to calmly take a look at the other to see and appreciate how much they changed throughout the years. Thanks to that we can skip the drama unnecessary for this story and have them form a fantastic partnership—both for the cause and as lovers. The pace of their relationship is so well-written and we get to see it develop as the story progresses. Don't think, however, that it's all smooth and easy—their trademark jealousy and banter are very much present to spice things up a bit! Romaine was generous to give both Harry and Draco many quirks and habits that the reader gets to discover along with them but I don't want to spoil your fun by listing them here—you need to trust me, you're in for a treat! One more thing, because it actually might be my favourite: remember the classic fanfic trope of a character recognizing the scent of their love interest's hair? Romaine's take on it is simply stellar and takes it to a brand new level. Everything from their first kiss (!!!!!!), through the smut scenes, to the moment they're finally ready to confess their love is a pleasure to read and I envy those of you who will get to read it for the first time!

And if, after finishing this fic, you won't be quite ready to leave the universe Romaine created just yet, I have great news for you: for the 25 Days of Draco and Harry 2021, she wrote "25 Additional Scenes for This Ain't the Garden of Eden" which features extra scenes from the main story (also a huge rec!).

Okay, so I finished the third Rebuild of Evangelion movie, and as always, I have some thoughts.

So, this was the divisive one. This was the one that was supposed to trump End of Evangelion in how dark and fucked up it was, the one that caused Anno to relapse back into his depression, the one that split the fans by crushing the optimistic vibes of the previous one.

I...kind of loved it? Like, seriously, I really enjoyed this one (for the most part, but we'll get to my one big criticism later). Like, the first one was an abbreviated version of the first few episodes, the second was a retelling of the events leading to the Third Impact, while this felt like a genuinely new story in the Eva universe. We finally get to see past the Third Impact! I had no idea where the story was going at any given time! It was actually kind of exciting!

Okay, let's start off with the awesome. First, the Wunder, AKA the badass Eva-powered helicarrier Misato was captaining? Absolutely incredible. I was watching on my phone's little screen and I still gasped when it was revealed. Seriously, that whole battle was superb.

And Asuka and Mari as a bantering tag team? Also cool. Definitely see why they're shipped, even if Mari is fated to end up with Shinji in the end.

You know, one thing I've always liked about Eva is that for as utterly flawed and even fucked up as everyone's personalities might be, they still feel real and understandable. And while I've also felt that the way Asuka and others have mistreated Shinji in the past was inexcusable, the coldness and hostility he's getting from them now does make perfect sense. Yes, it wasn't his fault. Yes, he was just trying to save Rei and didn't know what he was doing. Yes, it was all a setup by SEELE. But the dude still triggered the Third Impact. That is a whole lot of dead people. And seeing that Misato lost her father to Second Impact, I can't blame her for not welcoming him back!

Okay, so someone in the know clear something up. Was Rei's soul recovered? Like, when Shinji pulled her out of that Angel, did NERV use whatever soul snatching tech to recover her and put her into a new clone body like they did when Unit 00 exploded in the original series? And does the Unit 00 she's piloting now still contain a piece of Rei 1?

Okay, I'm assuming that Shinji's soul lay dormant inside of Unit 01 all those years until I guess his giant robot of a mom spat him back up, after which everyone at WILLE was like, "Oh great, now this planet wrecking asshole is back." At first I assumed that they cloned him and was confused as to why everyone was ignoring him after bringing him back, but they didn't even want him back to begin with!

Kaworu. Oh, Kaworu. You know, I wasn't really on board with the whole Shinji x Kaworu thing when I first watched the series, but then again, that was a weird transitional period in my life as I moved away from my religious conservative upbringing and was still dealing with a lot of internalized homophobia. Now watching them interact with a fresh perspective...yeah. I mean, Shinji x Asuka is still my go to ship, but realistically speaking, the creepy Angel boy is the best option for him. Kaworu is pretty much the only person to show Shinji actual affection, respect, and positive reinforcement from the beginning, and it's clear why Shinji is so smitten by him. Granted, it's Kaworu, so there probably is an element of manipulation there, but it still does seem to come from a genuine place, and regardless of his motives he does seem to have Shinji's best interests at heart.

Okay, so where did it lose me a little? Well, I was a little confused as to Shinji's motivations at the end. I get that he blamed himself for the Third Impact and was convinced that kicking off Instrumentality would reset the world somehow, but he went from I WILL NEVER AGAIN PILOT AN EVA to GET ME IN THE DAMN ROBOT really quickly. At first I thought that he felt that he and Kaworu were sneaking behind NERV's back to further their own agenda, but Rei's presence as their backup would imply that it was an official NERV operation from the get-go. Like, does Shinji seriously trust his dad?

So I feel there should have been one more element to convince him. Like, have him turn Kaworu down at first, but then have one more revelation that makes Shinji change his mind. And maybe have a scene where Rei asks to go with them because she's curious about her own origins. I get that this movie had a troubled production and multiple rewrites, but this bit could have stood to be proofed a little more.

I also don't get Gendo's "Just As Planned" reaction. Like, really? They counted on this exact scenario? And was he working for SEELE or seeking to undermine them? Was this all just a setup to get rid of Kaworu because he was SEELE's boy? Why would he or SEELE want Fourth Impact to be aborted? It's all way too convoluted, even for Gendo.

Okay, so in regards to Kaworu, it seems that he was led to believe that Instrumentality would reset the world like he promised Shinji, but Gendo pulled a fast one by either switching out the Lance of Cassius with a second Lance of Longius, or lied to him about the lances from the beginning, basically tricking him into a scenario that eould result in his death or a different version of Instrumentality than he promised Kaworu or...something?

See what I mean about convoluted?

But the messiness of the finale aside, I still really liked this one, and am looking forward to the completion of everyone's arcs in the final movie.

So the previous poster had tags of "I couldn't give out any candy with peanut butter in it because of the outbreaks".

Today, children, we're going to learn about something called The Peanut Corporation of America. See, in 2008, the PCA was the largest American provider of candied peanut butter, which is just peanut butter mixed with powdered sugar. That candied peanut butter is why your homemade Reese's or Nutter Butters taste a little different than the real thing. (And it's super easy to make, protip, you're welcome.) So that candied peanut butter has a ton of regulations to it, as it should, because peanut butter is prone to salmonella if not processed properly. And in 2008, this PCA corp sickened a bunch of people.

So what happened, it turned out, was the Food Safety Coordinator of the PCA, Mary Wilkerson, emailed her boss, Stewart Parnell, and said "Yo boss, we can't sell this batch of peanut butter. It's got hella salmonella in it." And that boss went "Mary, if you want to keep your job, you're going to sell it anyway. It's fine. People are resilient. And that recall is way too much money to lose, so sell it."

And then ~750 people got sick *and nine people died*.

Now, when this happened, it resulted in the then-largest food recall in the United States, involving 46 states, over 360 companies, and over 3,900 different products! Because this was a small but key ingredient in a ton of things! And because of regulations at the time, these people *went to fucking jail*.

Mary? Five years, because she was a foot soldier who nonetheless did not do her job well enough to stop this from happening. Stewart, the CEO? 30 years. His brother, the VP? 28 years. Yep, these two dudes are still in prison.

But what does that have to do with today?

Weakened regulations have allowed these two motherfuckers to almost-successfully file that they shouldn't have gone to jail *for killing nine and sickening 750* because "we only broke a regulation, it should be a fine". A fine. For getting hundreds sick and killing nine people. All because they failed to self-regulate properly. Mary WAS the self-regulator. That's what a Food Safety professional DOES. She went to jail for NOT seeing the fuckery going on and calling the FDA/USDA on them, because that WAS HER JOB. So weakening the self-regulations of the slaughterhouses is essentially giving us more Mary's of the world, but now they won't go to jail for not doing THEIR JOB.

These motherfuckers are ALSO trying to lobby to GET OUT OF JAIL EARLY because "weh, we're old, we're tired, but we're not sorry". Yeah? Tell that to the old, tired folks who FUCKING DIED eating your poison candy!

Sure. Except they weren't eating raw oysters, which comes with that warning and is thus something that can sort-of be reasonably avoided. They were eating homemade things, like a peanutbutter cookie made from a grandchild. Or a PBJ sandwich. And also, peanut butter is a recognized healthy snack for immunocompromised folks because of the vitamin E that's supposed to help boost your immune system. And all of the peanut butter used was commercially packaged, which is assumed safe, *because of the regulations*.

What does all this have to do with Trump?

The above post mentioned the Boar's Head recall, a recall that is just as extensive as this one. 7 MILLION pounds of stuff have been recalled for listeria. That's wild! Two people, as of July, have died! And there's no call yet on if any of this is going to result in a change of regulation or not. I'm hoping that's because it's too soon to tell. But we don't yet know.

The weakening regulations are a problem because that implies that we believe that the honor system will stop something like this from happening again. But as we've seen time and again from problems like this, these corporations have lawyers specifically hired to find loopholes in laws like this to avoid jailtime. And the less regulations there are, the wider those loopholes get, and the easier these bastards can slip through. Mary was the honor system. She failed it. Others will, too.

Regulations are written in blood. They are formed because people had to die for them to be recognized as things that needed to be regulated. And easing those regulations is spitting on the graves of those who died because of greedy motherfuckers. And sure, maybe Boar's Head isn't full of greedy motherfuckers, and this was an oversight that turned deadly. Okay, that happens. But manslaughter is a criminal charge for a reason, it forces people to be careful or to face the consequences of their actions. And weakening regulations makes it so the consequences are just "bad press for a while".

Bad press doesn't prevent the dead.

TL;DR: Food Safety Important, Vote Kamala.

Paging David Muir and ABC News: Humiliation Is Calling, Courtesy of New FBI Crime Stats

Moderators David Muir and Linsey Davis of ABC News delivered a frankly disgusting performance during the September presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. The network had agreed that there would be no fact checks and no interruptions, yet the partisan duo proceeded to do exactly that.

In fact, Trump was fact-checked at least five times, while Harris was left to say whatever the heck she wanted (much of it lies).

Perhaps the most infamous moment came when Muir, using his most arrogant, self-important tone, interrupted Trump on crime statistics. Yes, the former president fought back and tried to explain why Muir was wrong, but the mission had already been accomplished: they wanted to interrupt Trump’s flow, have him go off on some sideline that wasn’t germane to the argument he was making—and they succeeded. If this were Kamala Harris using these tactics, that would have been fine—she’s supposed to be trying to trip him up—but to have the supposedly unbiased neutral “moderators” join forces with Kamala was quite simply unethical.

Of course, Trump was right, and Muir was wrong. The FBI, whose reputation was already in tatters, just demeaned themselves even more by quietly releasing new statistics showing that rather than the 2.1 percent decrease they’d reported, it was actually a 4.5 percent increase. Oops.

But while Mr. Muir may be at his  $7 million dollar home on Skaneateles Lake, New York, busily eating crow for dinner, has he apologized to Trump, to the American people, to anybody? According to reports, the cat has got his tongue:

Muir has yet to acknowledge the FBI's stat change on "World News Tonight," according to Grabien transcripts. ABC News did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital's request for comment.

"Did not immediately respond." Meaning, they're cowering like cats in a rainstorm.

I wondered in a piece Friday why this election is apparently so close—despite a majority of voters reporting that they are worse off than they were four years ago. One of my conclusions: the lying mainstream media has played a huge role in dumbing down the American voter.

Muir’s needless interjection into a historic and potentially history-defining debate was appalling at the time, but this new information makes him and his network look even worse. It would be nice to see him man up to it, but manning up is not something we see too often these days coming from the Democrat party/corporate media cabal.
