the entire basis is the idea that Corn in Future retconned og JSR Beat as leader/founder of the GGs (is beat being leader in the og even CANON?) so Corn and Beat are the Myras. no it's not a joke funny enough to justify how many hours i sunk into drawing these. no attempt was made to change the setting, assign most of the other cast, or otherwise make this au hold up to ANY amount of scrutiny. if i tried to make this actually work somehow then i'd REALLY end up too far gone. also i keep calling myrtle!beat "Meat".

hopefully the last bitter post i make abt totk, but i had this realization abt it

(starting with the disclaimer that this is very much based on what I personally value in video games, on my feelings towards totk, this is subjective unless I start getting into objective things)

this was going to be a longer post but i am exhausted and i don't know how to really word this, but; totk feels like a world built almost exclusively on doylist explanations. it does not feel like a natural place, it does not feel like a time that takes place a few years after botw, it does not feel like a story that happens because events happened in this world; it feels like a video game location created for player entertainment, the whip-lash inducing shift from sheikah tech focus to zonai exists literally because the devs wanted to give the players shiny new toys while the old sheikah stuff doesn't take up any space, the story is clearly an afterthought compared to gameplay and an excuse to give the player more little things to play with, the worldbuilding has little thought put into it past new ways for the player to have fun and do new things, any and all references to past games (even to fucking botw) are very shallow callbacks that either make no sense in context or are just stupid little winks to those who aren't new to the game, while much of the extremely awkward inconsistencies with botw are there because they wanted to cater to new people.

this story doesn't build on botw's story, it rolls back and stampedes over some ideas from that game, it's a squeal for the sake of giving people these characters and this world again with some tweaks and fliers, the musical references to divine beasts and champions mean absolutely nothing in context and are only there as hollow references in lieu of using any new and relevant leitmotifs, characters that are flat on the surface and downright confusing and nonsensical and marinated in old stale tropes if you look any deeper, the villain being ganondorf specifically does not matter in context because nothing unique to ganondorf the character is ever explicitly important and he was just put in because he's the popular zelda villain, the references are hollow and carry no meaning in the greater scheme of things, the story itself ends by returning to the way everything was when the game started because oh we can't have our precious well-known ip important characters be permanently disabled or forever altered in a meaningful way.

it's so painfully... all there because it's a fictional work created for an audience seeking fun. it's so obviously like that because it was created with the goal of fixing things from a previous title and adding new things without any regard for narrative cohesion or good worldbuilding.

as someone who enjoys games with stories best when really taking into consideration and delving into the depths of that story, totk just unravels in front of my eyes when i try to do that, and it just feels insulting at how obviously ultrahand exists literally so the player can pull off dumbass g-mod dogshit while any story explanation for why that power exists at all is either flimsy as hell or straight-up not there.

I finished turnabout serenade it wasn't as mid as I thought it would be it was actually fun I saw people say it's like big top two but it's better than that case and even that actually had some good moments imo (just like the parts with franzsika and edgeworth etc) like that was interesting!!!and maya was pretty fun in that case but yeah despite most of it feeling like filler and max and ben existences I still think it's better than the first case of that game that's my least favourite it was so annoying imo anyways them playing the video a bunch of times was getting a little annoying but I think with how weird 3d klavier looked it kinda made it more funny than annoying and I think it wasn't that bad of a set up to the next one I'm so excited to play it but turnabout corner was definitely less fun than this one

sincerest apologies if you've been asked and said something about this before, but i'm curious what your process for coming up with your characters is! the way the isat cast are written is so good and well rounded, they each really feel like a person. how do you develop them to that point! for that matter, was there any interesting Character behind the scenes development between comic!siffrin and game siffrin as their story changed and became more fleshed out? thank you so much if you decide to answer, and if you don't that's ok too and i hope you have a good day!

ok i feel like i have answered this before, but it's not in my #reference tag so you get a whole new answer!!!!!!

-figure out a Trope. a Fella full of Tropes. like omg thats a Fella who Likes Puns. take your Trope Fella thats your basis.

-give them a secret. or more. the secrets will drive their actions. this Fella has amnesia and also has abandonment issues. do not reveal the secrets until the Right Moment, but you should often allude to it

-with those two things you will get Rules. this is a Fella who likes Puns. they use puns to deflect. so if someone asks a question that is a little too close to home, they will ALWAYS DEFLECT.

-write them in so many situations. how would they react to this? what would they say here? how would they answer when someone asks about their favorite hobby? would they be honest about it? or are they lying about it? why?

-every situation theyre into should go back to the rules. even if you're the only one who knows it. just a sprinkle to make people go "huh that was a weird reaction...."

-that way, people experiencing the story again will be able to go "OH MY GOD... THAT WASNT A PUN OUT OF NOWHERE... THAT WAS A /DEFLECTION/" and they will love it.

-rules are here to be broken. but only for the best moments ever

-lastly, give them a hobby or two to make them seem like real people. be REAL specific about it. this girl doesnt just like romance books she likes MONSTER ROMANCE

Ah! Granted this wasn't right away but,

SO a while after the dust has settled after blind betrayal with all that means; Danse is somewhat awkwardly settling into the minutemen, Tango heavily minutemen alligned by this point and is avoiding / stealing stuff and info from the BoS, Haylen is unhappier than ever with the methods of the BoS, and Rhys is still only a knight, and its really just him and Haylen left of Gladius.

side note: by 'awkwardly settling into the minutemen' I mean Danse has SO many suggestions for fixing the lack of efficiency, and so many things bother him because they are slack or not military grade.. His used to being a leader and running a 'tight ship' is not meshing well with the minutemen's lax structure, and also with his feelings of 'oh god I'm the worst thing alive why am I still alive', as well as just general awkwardness at interacting with 'civilians', many of whom are nice to him??

Anyway: Haylen is helping Tango snoop through some files that neither of them should have clearance for on a Cambridge terminal, when they stumble on the profiles for their squad.. they read through and find that of the three not Dead (or marked dead) members they are all marked as potential traitors with notes to watch carefully and not to promote them.

For Haylen this is the tiny push she needed to leave, and she knows that Rhys would never agree to leave on his own and would probably turn them both in for trying, 'he lives and breathes brotherhood". She just cant leave him here, they think hes a traitor waiting to happen!

So She convinces Tango to help her 'rescue' him. Not that Tango needed much convincing, Tango likes Rhys in a very weird not quite friendship 'asshole to asshole communication' deal, they operate on similar wavelengths and personality etc.

So they wait till hes on night patrol at Cambridge, and when hes on the outer perimeter near the end of his shift, Tango grabs him, they both tie him up and Tango fukin books it, while Haylen goes in to wake the next knight for their shift saying Rhys was ill.. which is plausible because shes a field scribe and they are medics too. (the real MVPs of the BoS by the sound of it, organizing, planning, medical, hell even mechanics!!)

She meets them a little while away and they make their way to the castle with a seething Rhys being carried by Tango, and arrive near dawn.

Inside they pass Danse already awake of course, Haylen says good morning sir, and he greets her distractedly before his brain catches up. He stares for a bit with eyebrows narrating internal monologue for him, before he chooses to ask "so they've marked you as traitors..?"

It takes Rhys a. while. and lots of evidence stolen by Haylen and Tango, including a fresh warrant for his presumed betrayal and desertion before Rhys comes around enough to not be a risk to the minutemen.. Fortunately for Rhys they have much nicer policies for prisoners than the BoS ..

Even after he agrees that going back to the BoS at this point would be dangerous for any of them, he's still a absolute ass to everyone around him.. Like Danse, its going to take a very long time for Rhys to confront his own biases, if he ever fully does at all.

He avoids Danse for the longest time and Danse lets him. Rhys and Tango still get on like a house on fire, and by that I mean its chaotic, destructive, and they fan each others flames of assholery. He forgives Haylen first, and Rhys probably wont ever admit it, but the months with Danse 'dead' and barely seeing Haylen and Tango.. he missed them.

\/ this is what I mean by asshole to asshole communication, like that 'clown to clown' communication meme

Firstly.. Sort of? is it still a crush if you wake up one day and realize that you probably see the person you've spent the last few years nearly inseparable from as more than a friend? That you look at your partner that you've shared all but romance with and you go oh. oh. Is it still a crush if her sleepy smile when she wakes up in the evening is enough to make the day a good one? ... The answer is probably Yes, But it would take Danse a long time to grow enough to catch feelings, and even longer to realize the fact that he has these feelings, AND to be honest it probably takes some outside intervention to push these too idiots together because the are both the kinda people to assume feelings are not reciprocated and flirting is obviously not real. 🙄

Secondly.. THE short answer is that his ass needs to survive blind betrayal and all of the personal bias deconstruction that goes along with it (to me, non of this vanilla half-assed arc here), though Murphy's friendship had already begun to challenge some of his views (at a glacial pace.)

TO explain in more detail the situation necessary for Danse and also expanding on the 'long time to grow' part of above:

I'd like to be clear that Murphy is very obviously a mutant, and as such every interaction she has with everyone postwar is coloured by this fact, regardless of what the person thinks of mutants. She also had quickly gained fame with a mixed reputation, shes been helping people but shes still a mutant and some of those from that vault have turned out to be monstrous, cruel or both..

Her reputation and her 10 charisma was about the only things that kept Danse from turning her to ash where she stood in Cambridge when they first met. Against his better judgment he agrees with Haylen that they need help, and he also agrees with Rhys that one mutant vault dweller will be easy enough to take down when necessary regardless of its status in the region.

Arcjet goes smoothly considering the circumstances and surprisingly NOT Crispy! I don't think Danse would have taken the near roasting the same from a mutant as he does in game.. He doesn't offer her a place in the BoS, why would he? Hes already breaking protocol by not shooting her.

By this point Danse has spent enough time with Murphy to see that shes .. a few tools short of a kit, and likely isn't harboring any nefarious plans for their downfall. (that's Danse for 'no thoughts, head empty'), and he could also see that she really does want to help. Accordingly, he still gifts her Righteous Authority (his lazer rifle) because its obvious that traditional ballistics are impeding her combat effectiveness with her flinching at every shot ringing out, not to mention that she was trying to use a pistol for medium range tactics..

(definitely didn't get distracted here to make this meme..)

A lot happens to them, and the BoS is up to some shadier stuff than they are in vanilla, which ties into why they 'recruit' Murphy at all.... But really what Danse needs is to be out of the BoS so he can examine his biases away from where they are being re-enforced, he needs to somewhat healed from his self loathing from said biases, and to do that he needs time, support and people to challenge those biases.. Danse doesn't join the MM but he is befriended by Nick, much to his disgust at first.

Note game but with goals I want to hit by the end of 2025. but knowing how I am, I probably won't without some kind of outside motivation.

And we are starting at 30 because I've seen how these things go for some xdd

30: I'll try to eat more regularly during the day

40: I'll try to drink more water untill I eventually start drinking enough daily

60: I'll start painting again

100: I'll be more active instead of bed rotting all day (I haven't been in bed nearly as much)

200: I'll exercise at least once a week

300: I'll try to be more social and make new friends online and in person. (I MADE 2 NEW FRIENDS)

400: I'll learn a new skill

500: I'll start being more open about how I feel

1000: I'll learn how to cook

1500: I'll learn how to love myself and live for me rather than live because I can't stand the thought of people being sad.

2000: I'll start dressing how I want instead of how I was raised too.

4000: I won't let the fear of my homophobic family finding out I'm Pansexual stop me from dating.

5000: I'll tell my family I want to leave the religion I was raised in.

From now until November (because of holiday rush) I'll check the notes and complete or start goals as soon as I can.

Let's limit this to 5 notes per blog I guess and I'm tagging some people just so I can say I tried when the last several goals aren't reached.

On Blorbability

I think one of the strengths of modern D&D is the ability to efficiently describe the blorbos you make with it using understandable components. Like the template of Alignment + Species + Background + Class lets you put together a quite evocative picture of who a character is quite efficiently, just by swapping in and out those components like those mix-and-match monster flipbooks.

Like, to take a character I played, when I say:

Lawful-Evil Drow Monk with the Inquisitor background.

you can immediately picture that character, right?

You can do this indefinitely. "Chaotic-Good Halfling Bard Criminal" or "Chaotic-Neutral Human Barbarian Outlander" or "Lawful-neutral Elf Wizard Accademic". It clicks.

There's a sweet spot of having the right amount of slots you pick from, 3-4. Less than that and the blorbo comes out flat, more and its too granular. An OSR character is probably one template (class), two if you're doing race+class AD&D style, and thats not quite enough detail to go full Blorb. Same with most PbtA games where you just pick a playbook. A gurps character is pretty darn granular, and is also not a particularly legible blorbo even if you can be very expressive with it.

The actual *stats* don't matter, what your attributes and spells and gear are don't matter much, the point is that you're madlibsing archetypes together in a legible way.

Like take vampire the masquerade as another good example of an extremely blorbable game. Here, the actual weight of your character is carried by attributes/skills/disciplines/backgrounds/merits, right? But you can still describe them with that same combination of archetypes. Here's a character I'm playing right now:

Ancilla Noiad Anarch on the Path of Harmony.

Age + Clan + Sect + Path. Simple. Four tags and you get a good picture of who this character is. And like, I bet you could take a good guess at what she's like mechanically, right? From that description, I bet you're picturing somebody with Survival and Stealth and decent combat and probably leaning hard into Protean, and that's accurate!

Here's some more VtM characters. "Camarilla Ventrue Elder on Humanity", "Camarilla Ventrue Elder on Honorable Accord", "Sabbat Tzimisce Elder on Path of Ecstasy", "Independent Giovanni Neonate on Humanity". If you're familiar with VtM, you can picture the shape of these characters.

So I'm taking this idea and applying it to my Magical Girl project. You have two playbooks that slot together - one magical and one mundane - and then you pick whether you're heroic or villainous. And on top of that, in the late game you might become Something Else like a Spectre or a Princess. So that's 3-4 mix-and-match slots. A player character can be expressed as:

Villainous Ruffian Blaster

and you can picture who she is. The combinations work. "Heroic Recluse Spy", "Villainous Fangirl Summoner", "Heroic Weirdo Cheat becoming a Princess", these are legible just from the options picked.

Which I think is a good sign, it means its easy to picture and communicate the sorts of characters you can have in the game.
