tarantulas/mesothulas for the headcanon meme?

Headcanon A:  realistic

i assume that the actual period in which mesothulas and prowl worked together was substantial, but not that long. i think by the time Sins happens, it has been longer by far since they saw each other than they ever actually like... worked together for. when prowl throws him in the noisemaze, they're still on cybertron, and more to the point there's clearly still major settlements of civilians on cybertron. (it's the inciting incident, in fact.) we know mass evacuations started about four million years prior to canon, if my timeline is in order, after which things increasingly moved offworld. anyway, i think they worked together from about the start of the war through to somewhere before the million year mark at most, so mesothulas(/tarantulas) has had a very, very long time to stew over the version of events his brain has settled on when we see him in Wreckers. which... well i'm sure that was very healthy and fine probably, look at him, he's a model of emotional stability.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

i do think the concept that he's sort of lying about never even trying to join either side because of his Aloof Neutral Objectivity is. a little bit of a lie. is very funny. he briefly tried to join the decepticons for purely pragmatic reasons (shockwave had a very fancy lab) and shockwave was like. hm. no. massive liability. and now mesothulas is like "oh i would never even BOTHER WITH THOSE IDIOTS nope i am far above all that actually". seems like the sort of thing he'd do.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

i am increasingly convinced of the idea it works to have the original impetus for tarantulas to make his time travel device be some kind of plan to go like. take ostaros out of the timestream before anything ever happened and start again with him. (presumably erasing springer in the process.) it strikes me as completely unrealistic he'd never have even considered it when coming up with that idea. so him not doing so makes the most sense to me if it's an idea which (having watched, and grown attached to, springer as he currently is) he actively abandoned.

i think he's telling the truth that when he abandoned this idea he was 100% onboard for all the 'fuck around with the specimen' stuff, but his original goal being an aborted one to go get ostaros fits fine with that.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.

do i think the relationship mesothulas had to shockwave was supposed to be senator shockwave? no, obviously it's supposed to be post-shadowplay evil amoral scientist shockwave. do i think it is way too fun to imagine pre-war shockwave as mesothulas' benefactor despite all those red flags i'm sure were visible from ten miles away, because, well, senator shockwave was a little morally dubious and mesothulas was very good at science? absolutely. 100%. you'll pry it out my cold dead hands.

♡ Misc. Varia Headcanons ✧ 1 of 2

✧ Belphegor is fascinated by the dentist office kid's toy. He thinks its an absurd little contraption, but he really enjoyed something akin to mouse trap as a child and the structure of moving blocks and balls reminds him of that silly little game. It's where he began training his brain to set up traps. He would have also been a Lego kid and enjoys a good 3D puzzle. Unfortunately for him, he also had a very traumatizing childhood and is not the best at tuning in to and soothing his inner child, so you won't necessarily find him building a little miniature saw trap for fun.

Speaking of the dentist office, he built up a very meticulous routine with his dental health and adheres to it pretty well, despite being fairly lazy with everything else. It's just a part of his morning and evening routine, so he doesn't think much of it at this point in his life. Compared to the rules and to-dos that he had growing up, this is the most lax living situation he could be in.

✧ Lussuria is a notorious shower singer, it's like he has whole entire pop concerts in there. He will go through Lady Gaga's entire discography if nobody stopped him. He may not always have time for it, but hell, he will make time because there is nothing better for him than a little Sunday reset everything shower. He has a similar routine prior to missions as well.. gotta look and feel his best for his fabulous job, clearly.

He's an enigma for how packed his schedule is and how he has time to do so much. He has missions to complete, physical training and conditioning, so much paperwork to fill out, and is actually in charge of a lot of the Varia "onboarding", if that makes sense. Part of it is because he does see them as a family and wants everyone to be welcomed appropriately to the team. A lot of the underlings really like Luss for that reason, he's the most warm and welcoming, as odd as he can be. A number of Varia members don't even get to see their boss in the flesh, mostly hearing about him.. or hearing his outbursts and being too scared to approach and find out what happened this time... as a result, many are most familiar with Luss and Squalo as the representative leadership.

✧ Levi loves a good affogato, and would rather die than let the word get around that he likes ice cream in his coffee. He does not like black coffee at all, and sometimes is secretly, on the inside, extremely displeased when that is all they have available. He's got too much of a tough guy exterior to keep up to bring it up, though.

He uses a ton of alarm clocks to wake himself up, and it's fine until they are working from outside of their usual base and the walls are any less soundproof than the ones at their mansion. He's a heavy sleeper, and he falls asleep fast. Like, flop down into bed and start snoring within 90 seconds type of fast.

Y'all is it so obvious that I'm so work-brained right now.. why am I thinking about Varia onboarding procedures... I love Luss so much can you tell. I was going to continue with the other members but I got sleepy... gn xx

I'm gonna touch on some NSFW material so there's your warning!

Quick disclaimer, this is just how I personally see Rufus and how I will be playing him as my muse. Any and all interpretations of his character are absolutely valid and I'm not here to tell ANYONE how they should view or write the character!!

So like, first off, I really more or less see Rufus as bisexual. But I myself am a gay male, so I'm inevitably gonna be A LOT more onboard and passionate about male/male ships. I'm sorry! Though honestly, with how much Rufus openly flirts with Cloud in the Remakes, I think he does have a preference toward men anyway.

Rufus ALWAYS has his guard up. It's gonna take A LOT of work and effort to break those walls of his down. He is pretty much THE most famous, influential figure in the world and he cares GREATLY about his image and how people perceive him, even if he sometimes claims that he doesn't. He'll flirt all day long, but as soon as things start sounding more serious or vulnerable he will likely shut down unless he is completely trusting and comfortable toward the person.

I do very much see him as a Dominant, both in and out of the bedroom. That's something I kinda struggled with for a while. I think it's pretty common for authority figures to secretly be more on the submissive side in bed, as it's their way of letting go of control for once and getting away from their responsibilities. But Rufus worked REALLY HARD for those responsibilities and seems to genuinely relish the opportunity.

"You're a SOLDIER, aren't you? Which, of course, would mean that I own you."

I think the guy definitely has some fetishes, and is highly into dominating people in the bedroom and holding personal, intimate power like that over someone.

But, weirdly, I think he would also be very sweet and nurturing toward his partner?

Dude's got mommy issues AND daddy issues for days. But since I also view him as a Dom, I think those issues manifest more as being the authority figure he always WISHED he had in his life. He's almost maternal toward his partner. He nurtures them, he cares for them, he cheers them on.

And although he isn't submissive, I think he does also want to be nurtured and cherished in the same way. He'd never ASK for it or say he needs it, but he totally needs it.

Rufus is a Soft Dom: he treats his submissive with respect and dignity, he rarely yells and punishes, but rather nurtures and rewards. He pushes boundaries (and is definitely into some kinky shit), but is respectful about it and makes sure his partner is comfortable before he continues.

2. What’s your favorite part of the trilogy?

As in, which game ? Or which part of a given game I think is strongest ?

For the latter, it's indisputably the resolution of the Mordin/krogan/genophage plot, which is heartbreaking whatever you do. Trick Weekes at their finest, no notes.

For the former, you're asking me which of my three children is my favorite but (sorry @average-mako-enjoyer) I'm going with ME2. Full disclosure, I'm fully onboard with the analysis of the late, lamented Shamus Young, who argued (rightly, I believe) that ME2 is basically filler as it doesn't advance the plot of the OT past the end of ME1 (thereby preparing the clusterfuck at the end of ME3 from lack of set-up), and that it significantly veers off the themes and preoccupations of the original Mass Effect (though I would argue, sometimes for the better).

Yet at the same time, this is a game which isn't supposed to work that catches lightning in a bottle because it's entirely structured on the mechanics of the final Suicide Mission, which itself hinges on the players caring about the companions enough that their deaths would be a loss. And it works, because the companions are fucking amazing. I really like it when a game or a story has a structure uniquely suited to its needs, which is why I'm kinda skeptical when BW tries to systematize ME2's structure to other games (e.g. Loyalty missions in MEA ; while I'm all for personal missions exploring the lives and perspectives of companions, ME2's LMs work because many of them can be significantly failed (usually - but not limited to - by not doing them) and have immediate consequences in the game itself).

But I'll be honest : the real reason I love this game so much is how much we learn about the galaxy. I love how the Terminus Systems are retconned ; I love how we really get into the darker side of the galaxy in a partial deconstruction of the previous game (much like another all-time fave, KOTOR 2), and how we see various people being people outside of the Citadel (which, in ME1, could get very Babylon 5-stilted at times). I fucking love Legion and the new perspective on the geth. I love everything about Mordin. I love the variation in the Loyalty Missions, how (gasp) sometimes there are some missions with no combat ? I love the lore. I love the humor. I love the Suicide Mission's music. I really love that we do gain one significant insight into the Reapers as a species, which is that we are material for their reproduction, which really emphasizes for me the cosmic horror of it all (try and tell someone the best possible use for them is as proteins for a sperm packet). (Conversely, I can't stand the final design for the Reaper larva, especially when I've seen other concepts artists were cooking with).

6. Who was your romance interest? If you changed it, why?

Here is my shameful answer : for medical reasons, I have never been able to play a single Mass Effect game. I have therefore never been able to commit to that personal choice : romance. Which is fine, because until fairly recently I was more interested in the universe than the characters.

I used to be a big Shakarian fan, partly through osmosis (and gorgeous fanart), partly because Garrus is completely unhinged and goes through a corruption arc that is not so much resolved as sidestepped in ME3 (hence my personal headcanon that, in a post-ME3 setting where there's no Shepard, he becomes a Spectre but full Saren). I suspect the broad appeal of the romance for others is that this is a man whose life purpose is to go Punisher but who is always immensely respectful (and at times subservient) to the PC (a woman).

But overall, I've largely stepped away from concerning myself with the romances. I'm largely neutral toward most, with some who are serious NOPE for me (typically : Liara or Tali, which I find unhealthy in ways I do not find sexy). This probably largely boils down to there being no Commander Crapeau Shepard.

11. Any particular memorable quote and from who?

I'm basic, but Javik's. I don't even need to quote it to you.

13. What was the perfect ending for you and why?

I'm an absolute, unabashed fan of the Control ending, who I think most people don't care for because it's TIM-coded.

Synthesis irks me the wrong way because you don't know what you're doing and you're imposing that choice on literally everyone. I'd say the fact it's clearly the Catalyst's favorite option makes it bad, but really, this would be the good ending only when we had any thematic and narrative momentum to build on, Casey.

Destroy is an easy way out. The scorched earth solution. No Reapers, no problem, right ? You just need to kill EDI and the geth, but Shepard gets to live at the end, so that makes it okay I suppose.

Seriously, this solution manages the feat of both proving the Catalyst right (organics can only survive by prioritizing their own survival over that of synthetics) and actually doing nothing at all about the cycles the Catalyst harps on (because synthetics will reemerge in the future, and then you're fucked, son), and you've just implicitly given the Catalyst the vote of confidence for their opinions. What ? I think I'm more offended by the ending's popularity than the ending itself. It's a Pyrrhic victory, but is treated as 100% good because Shepard breathes at the end. Damn everything else.

Control, though. Now this is an ending that takes up the theme of Shepard's sacrifice to its limit. Not only can we expect wildly divergent futures based on Shep's personality (as seen in the subtle changed in Hale's/Meer's voiceover, and how great is it to hear them have the last word ?), which is fanfiction fodder, but more importantly, this is the best ending for everyone that isn't Shepard and their crew. Every species lives to the end ; no one gets fundamentally altered in ways that are unknown and horrific ; Shepard-controled Reapers speedrun the galaxy's reconstruction, minimizing loss of life after the war ; and at the very least, people get breathing room to try and find a possible alternative to the Crucible's shit choice. There is only one (1) person who is fundamentally impacted by Control, and that's Shepard. Shepard is God, but Shepard is gone. They endure as something profoundly different from what they were, in a monstrous form, both literally and theologically. Their apotheosis is, in a way, worse than death. They have to be the hero forever, and they can't even do it as themselves or with the people they love. It would be horrific for their squadmates, it's absolutely the choice a hero should take if they're defined by their ability to give up everything for the sake of everyone else. No, I won't be taking any questions.

Hello! I'm not sure how to start this ask. First let me tell you how amazing your art is and how I'm in love with all your AUs, even the one I don't know of!!!!! You give us so much beautiful content so thank you forever!!!!!!!!!

I've seen your recent Titanic AU art and it was chef's kiss as always!!! Hob getting dream to feel like he's flying zazedffgggdfrffggfggh!!!! I'm also very glad to see this AU with them because I've been thinking about it too for quite some time and I'm taking on the opportunity to tell about it because I really really want to get it out (hope you don't hate me for this please please don't hate me!!!)!!

Basically everything happens like in canon up to the 1900s (Hob and Morpheus first meet in 1389 and their 1889 meeting ends with Morpheus stroming away because he certainly isn't lonely and doesn't need friends and doesn't need hob and so on...).

Only, in this AU, Roderick Burgess captures Dream somewhere between 1900 and 1910 and - is it due to the ceremony itself or to further magic Burgess used to try and get Dream to obey him? - Dream ended up losing all his memories... At first, it pissed Burgess pretty bad (first this guy turned up to be the wrong Endless and now, even if he ever was to cooperate, he doesn't even remember how to anymore!!) but then he found a way to take advantage of the situation.

See, I've got this headcanon that if Burgess didn't use the ruby to its 'full potential', that's because he understood how dangerous it could be to humans...except now he's got an entity powerful enough to wield it and whose mind has gone completely blank (and thus ready for him to reshape) at hand! So Burgess tells Dream he's his master - the powerful magus Dream came to in hopes of a fresh start. That he used to be in trouble, a minor magical being that had angered the wrong entities and ended up on the run. Burgess accepted to protect him, erase his memories and offer him a new life. Of course, there was a price - every now and then, when Burgess would ask, he would have to put on Burgess' ruby to grant him a wish - not much compared to what Burgess did for him but something Burgess couldn't easily do on his own.

Flashforward to 1912, when Burgess embarks on the Titanic, probably accompanied by his son(s?) and, obviously, by Dream who's still completely amnesic (I've also been thinking that Burgess might make him wear some special artefact or tattoos, supposedly to help protect him, but really to ensure he doesn't start instinctively using his magic).

Now guess who's also onboard? Hob of course! He's probably just faked his own death or something and is yet again about to start a new life (therefore he might be travelling in second or even third class in spite of him having enough hidden money?).

When Hob first sees Dream he can't believe it. Why would his stranger be on this boat? With Roderick Burgess? Acting so...strange?? (well another strange that his usual strange!). It can only be an uncanny resemblance but also...how could anyone ressemble his stranger?! How could he ever mistake him with anyone else?!! It must be him!!! But, hey, his stranger has a right to have a life of his own after all, and, though he hadn't imagined he'd spend his time with one Roderick Burgess, well, that's none of his business! It's not been 100 years yet and, anyway, his stranger had been very clear about the fact that he didn't want to hear from him ever again!

Still, Hob soon comes to notice something feels...off. His stranger doesn't only seem to accompany Burgess, he appears to be his subordinate. To obey him. To bow down to him?? Just looking at it makes Hob feels sick in his stomach and he knows he has to do something, to check if his stranger's alright.

Which won't be easy, first to find a moment to speak alone, then to convince Dream Hob's a friend - well, at least someone who means well - despite not even knowing Dream's name...let alone that a part of Dream might not entirely whish to get his memories back. Burgess of course won't be helping, pretending Hob's only after the ruby and probably getting him arrested (given his experience during the 1600s, being handcuffed to a sinking ship must be quite a nightmare to Hob).

Aaaaand that's what I have for now I think!! Anyway, sorry for being so long and thank you for having given me the opportunity to talk about this AU!!!

do you ever think about how learning to fight in a family of three mages must have affected carver’s fighting style?

if he joins the templars, he gets yelled at for charging onto the battlefield without waiting for his squad to catch up. they call him dangerously reckless and it’s not like he can say that he’s used to having three healing spells ready for him and at least one barrier already cast.

on the other hand, he’s very popular with the mages in the wardens. he’s the only person on the entire continent for whom run into battle and absorb as much damage as possible is an intuitive strategy. tanking was always his job! he knows to pull the battle away from the mages as much as possible.

he also knows how to be buffed. most warriors need practice to be able to use haste without tripping over their own feet. carver? carver was the guinea pig for hawke and bethany’s support spell training. it takes at least three haste spells stacked on top of each other to faze him. he’s not thrown when the heroic aura wears off and suddenly his hands are slower and his sword is heavier. he’s got a sixth sense for when a mage is about to cast an aoe spell right on top of him and he needs to move. 

you ever think about how no one outside of the dalish elves grew up fighting with mages?

the warden commander probably puts him in charge of training new warriors, is what i’m saying.

HMMM in a hypothetical follow up to The Sweet Burn of Venom, how would Snape react to Harrie being rushed to Hogwarts after her heat had started and yet mysteriously ended sooner than it should have? In a kind of reversal to Harrie and her Alpha, how would Snape react to Voldie getting to her first?

And also to Harrie blocking out her heat/being in ABSOLUTE denial about any signs of pregnancy? At least, that’s what I would assume she’d do; what do you think the aftermath of Voldie’s visit(?) would be for her going forward, regardless of whether it was a dream/vision or not? 👀👀👀

Weeeeell I do have plot for what would happen next regarding this oneshot, but I have so many fics to write I'm not planning on continuing it.

Here's what would have happened:

Harrie shakes awake from her dream, is completely feverish and disoriented, but still coherent enough to understand it was a dream and Voldemort isn't here. She's also in heat. She scrambles downstairs, probably falls down the stairs actually, wakes up half the house. Her friends are worried, Harrie is NOT WELL, shaking, whining for an Alpha. She tells them she needs Snape (her Omega instincts trusts him and she does have a small crush on him at this point).

No one is onboard with that idea, but there is no other Alpha available, and in my headcanon A/B/O universe, an Omega going through a first heat alone could die. So in the end they call Snape, and he immediately grabs Harrie and tells everyone he'll do what's needed.

Snape Floos back to Hogwarts with Harrie, who's begging for him to fuck her. Except Voldemort has already marked her as his, and if Snape touches Harrie, he knows he's dead. So instead he brings Harrie to Voldemort.

(But it would be told from Harrie's POV so she doesn't know his reasoning and just feels utterly betrayed.)

Voldemort fucks Harrie for real, and claims her, and breeds her. He keeps her in his bed for the duration of her heat, which is one week. Once that time is up, he lets her go. Summons Snape, tells him he can bring Harrie back to Hogwarts, and that he'll see her soon or some other vaguely menacing promise.

Harrie is FURIOUS. She probably tries to kill Snape right there, or claws him and leaves a scar, or something. Snape brings her to Dumbledore's office, where they explain the plan they came up with.

Now that Voldemort claimed Harrie as his Omega, and also because she's pregnant, he can't hurt her, and he'll be compelled to please her. So their plan is for Harrie to lead Voldemort by his Alpha dick, finds his weaknesses, *become* his weakness, and end the war like that.

Harrie goes along with that reluctantly. She's half at school and half with Voldemort, and she's also still attracted to Snape despite everything (it doesn't help that he cares for her while she's at Hogwarts, brews her potions for her pregnancy, and protects her from all threats because Voldemort has ordered him to (and also because he loves her)).

Anyway, they end up fucking at some point, a hate fuck from Harrie's POV while Snape hates himself (a self hate fuck, if you will). Voldemort finds out, and Harrie watches while Snape gets punished, or punishes him herself.

Then I hadn't decided how the fic ended. Either Harrie decides life as Voldemort's Omega is tolerable if she gets to influence him enough to not be such a tyrant once he wins (bleak ending still). Or she flees somewhere with Snape and they raise the baby together (bittersweet Snarriet ending). Or she goes scorched earth on both Voldemort and Snape (and Dumbledore), and once they're all dead, she lives a happy life with her baby.

That's about it. :D

re: endersmile, i'm very much in the belief that things like the community house, handing over of the book, and keeping of the disc were trust exercises in a way, both ways. they're both very guarded people, so it'd make sense that they'd need to test each other out before committing to the larger portion of the plan. if enderboo was the one to suggest the community house like you pointed out, then that'd be dream risking something dear to him, the largest symbol of the server's past 1/7

His past, the symbolic Commitment to the plan, lose the past for their shared ideal future. meanwhile enderboo handing over his book is like him baring his neck in exchange, back then the book was the only lifeline ranboo rly had w the everchanging politics/relations/events, to lose it would be losing himself. and i think the traitor reveal was planned, a way to distance them in the server's minds, fully knowing the risk of execution (one that dream and punz could easily stop like hog hunt, and we know ranboo's opinions on dying for a cause he believes in, especially if petty bc jfc he hated how nlm was). the supplying of tnt was likely as simple as "i want this place Gone, let me help" from enderboo, bc we hear from ranboo how he was onboard w its destrunction, that it was inevitable and was likely for the best. the disc holding is described by the voice as a secret exchange in the nether, one of them having gotten the disc from skeppy beforehand(happyduo is very involved in their shit at key points, its interesting), and this one For Sure is a trust exercise since dream could've easily hidden it elsewhere or had it in his e-chest but instead he gave it to enderboo to hide until he needed it back, and after retreiving it he even left a lil thank you note. ranboo's main concern when finding it was the horror of doing so unknowingly and not wanting to believe it, but then it was feeling in danger from Others finding out, not dream, he was worried for his, phil, and techno's safety bc he knows the lengths people(tommy, namely) will go to for the discs, for the power they hold on some people. i think from then on they had their bond Solid, dream letting enderboo into the disc finale rehearsals and all, enderboo quickly visiting prison over and over, dream and his clock tantrum arc and wanting to send a message to ranboo above even george, enderboo's eager response to the message in a way that seemed to mock his forgetful self. not to mention how i think that enderboo was expecting to have a big reveal in disc finale(-points at Mask of My Own Face-), but dream being dream chose to protect him instead(an ongoing trend of his that i hold dearly) by taking the community house blame, which confused enderboo as shown by the staring and his notes from the finale. i care they and their fucked up plans that they Somehow keep getting away w -Soul (apologizes for the sudden ask essay lmao, i have terminal endersmile brainrot its a problem -Soul)

i completely agree wrt the whole trust exercises thing, and that is such a fantastic take on my mostly-silly theory/headcanon about the community house explosion that i'm adopting it immediately omg. i think the only thing i don't fully agree with in this is that i really don't think that ranboo was ever meant to be revealed in the finale? i've talked before about how ranboo's alliance with dream is one that is played extremely close to the chest, like i don't think there was any way that he would've exposed that in front of 90% of the server. in my mind, the eye contact was something very different, it was more about an unspoken signal like, "this is all according to plan, you know this. we both know what needs to happen next."

only semi-related tangent, but it's interesting the context in which dream does finally reveal information connecting himself to ranboo, i.e. to sam in the prison. dream told sam about ranboo in the midst of attempting to destroy sam's entire worldview, and it was a very spiteful, targeted reveal of information, like he was saying, "this is the person you wrote off as just a meek hostage, as just collateral damage, and yet this is the person who shook the control you so desperately grasped for. what does that say about people? what does that say about you?" and yet even in revealing ranboo's actions, he still holds back. he doesn't give any details as to why or how the prison tnt happened, he doesn't give any context to why or how ranboo is working with him, it's just an isolated bit of information, given only after dream has already made sure of the limits of sam's knowledge on ranboo overall. and this is speculation, but just based on how dream is and on the nature of his and ranboo's relationship, i don't think dream would have revealed anything if he wasn't fully confident that there would be no chance of sam retaliating against ranboo in the future. obviously at this point ranboo is already dead so he was less at risk, but more than that, i think it shows that dream was absolutely Determined to intimidate and break sam down to the point where he wouldn't dare.

12) Favourite final map? ashen wolves!!! i fucking LOVED the final map. it was the only map in the dlc i absolutely stormed, to the point i beat monster-mum before she used her special ability lmao, i was so confused as to why my brother got so frustrated!! i went back and did it a couple more times to play it properly and i had SO much fun playing that map!! it was my kind of challenge!! also Thematically, the whole retroactive foreshadowing for the ends of the other routes with the whole body-horror-monster-autonomy-free-will-devotion-dragon-mum-in-a-church-and-we-killed-her-with-other-thematic-buzzwords content. Now That's my kind of story. i fucking Loved ashen wolves, it might get the edge for my favourite route overall!!

13) Favourite song in the soundtrack? Oh it simply must be Colour of Sunrise. it's absolutely colour of sunrise. i love that track completely unironically, it's just marvellous on every single level to me. not only for the Fire Emblem Emotions it instills in me, but i'd also probably listen to it if it was on spotify. honerable mentions go to; Chasing Daybreak (rain) for the emotional decimation it wrought upon my ears when the timeskip turned all my little students into hardened war criminals; A Promise bc it, again, heavily tied to my favourite moments of the game; Broken Routine because i didn't expect the MUSIC to mourn jeralt as well. literally the music from this game is so, so good. i love how cohesive it is.

22) Unpopular or rare ship/support you really like, and why? ohohohoo well. my 3H otp is hubert/dorothea/edelgard/byleth. and ferdie too, why not. any combination of those 5, really. I saw the found family trope in the eagles and went 'is someone going to add romance to that' and did not wait for an answer. poly eagle rights. 'co-dependence' feels a little.. like a damnation, but when it comes to shipping, i very much enjoy those complex war-weathered relationships that are too entangled to separate. (sidenote: that's not exclusive to my fire emblem fanning. i see a fucked up group of fictional friends and i start making polycule onboarding jokes.) The other ship i'm ride or die for that counts as rare is dorothea/hubert!! I'm obsessed with their no children by the mountain goats vibe. their canon end card is probably one of my favourites, and honestly i just think they have some Discussions^tm to have with each other, which is why i crave their ship content lmao. my other otp that i do not think gets enough love is leonie/ignatz!! mostly based in my own headcanons about them, but I love them very very much. I think they'd have such an interesting post-war dynamic (as archers, as 'commoners', something something their utility to the deers/world in a post-war ceasefire environment flipped, both grapple with the idea of debt - to jeralt/her village and to his parent's wishes/raphael) and honestly i would sell off the remaining inch of my soul for more of them. i love them so much. I've been chipping away at a deers post-war!au fic about exactly that, but i lost a solid few months worth of work on it and now i'm so unmotivated to finish it :') i'm also SO on board for Edelgard/Ingrid as (and idk if it's rare or unpopular, but) most of the work i've seen for them has been absolutely class, and the very, very niche (to the point i'd almost consider it a crackship) Edelgard/Leonie. but that one's purely self indulgence <3

Saw this Perihelion hoodie by @souldagger in the midst of my recent fall headlong back into murderbot feelings and loved it so, so much.

Some of my favorite warm layers are from the onboard gift shop when I worked on a research vessel. They have the profile image of the ship on the front with name, designation, and home port, and the one with print on the back has '[Ship Name] Science'. So I'm now headcanoning Peri with a gift shop where research assistants, student interns, etc can feel more like part of the regular crew. I made some modifications to the design to match with that vision (I am so not a graphic designer). The ship image I based on the Latvian cover art for Artificial Condition.

43 plus hours of hand-stitching later I've completed it! I re-listened to all the audiobooks and some of the audiodramatization for this project (I like the Kevin R. Free audiobooks better, but wanted to be listening to murderbot the whole way through so continued into dramatization when I ran out of the former).

Working on the back took me partway into Network Effect which thankfully is a long because the front took more time than I would have expected, possibly because the university name is single thread satin stitch which was an absolute bear to do, but I'm pleased with how it turned out!

Suna here has a really cold and icy demeanor, which I think has to be balanced out by outgoing people (like the Miya twins). He likes to act like this dark and brooding person, but deep down, he’s actually just a little gremlin like most of us. 

- Okay okay, I know what you’re thinking. Yes, I already know that you’re a Suna stan, but I genuinely could not think of anybody who matches your personality description better, the two of you would just be *aggressive chefs kiss*

- I’m kinda getting an enemies-to-lovers-ish vibe with this dynamic, but also like a partners-in-crime-to-lovers type of deal. Either way, it’ll start out a little bit chaotic

- Has a crush on you immediately, I just KNOW it, but he won’t realize this until later on, and may even totally deny it to himself

It was never easy juggling all the activities that you took part in - each of them was truly a labor of love. Today was particularly draining because it was, after all, your birthday, and it just HAD TO fall on a weekday. You plonked on your bed and started scrolling through your phone.

Your tight-knit group of friends continued to send you birthday wishes, despite having already done so when you saw them earlier that day. They had sung to you and let you blow out a birthday candle - it was all they could do, given your busy schedules. You looked forward to the weekend you had planned with them and your boyfriend, Rintarou.

Speaking of Rin, you thought to yourself, as a message notification from him popped up.

You were giddy, not expecting him to show up. “I thought we were gonna wait til the weekend for my celebration??” 

“Do you not know me by now?” he chuckled. “As if I’d let today pass without doing anything about it.”

You smiled and looked at him for a few seconds. He rarely looks so sincere, and so warm, and you just wanted to drink up every last drop of this moment.

A L L R I G H T I’m finally going to make a rec post, I’ve put this off long enough.  You’ve definitely already started to watch it, clever, so please forgive me for using this as an excuse to pitch this show.

So, for starters, Anon, The Untamed is indeed on Netflix!  It is in Chinese!  If you (like me) do not understand Mandarin Chinese, the Netflix English subbing is…fine, it’s fine, but I recommend poking around in the fandom because every single form of address is changed to the character’s full name.  And maybe I just spent too much time doing translations for my old Spanish and Chinese and especially Latin classes, but I think there are some things that, A, shouldn’t be translated or, B, should be translated awkwardly over being translated incoherently.  

I digress.  My thoughts about maintaining forms of address in their native language for the sake of clarifying levels of respect/etc are not relevant here.  Chuck a note in my inbox if/when you get confused about everyone’s three names and I’ll write/link you a guide.

POINT IS.  The Untamed is an adaptation of the novel Mo Dao Zu Shi, which is generally translated as “The Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation,” and my quick pitch for it is: There’s a plot, sure sure, it’s the story of Wei Wuxian (his fall from grace to Most Hated Person In Magic!China, and then his resurrection and efforts to solve a murder), and if you like character-driven fantasy narratives you Will Like This

You know that post “but is he…you know…your narrative foil?”  That’s this show.  If what you crave is “one character committedly pines over another for twenty years even when the entire world hates that person,” please let me interest you in Lan Wangji, the love interest.  They have a kid together.  It’s a great romance.  Literally what else do you want from me.  I love a narrative foil, I love a tragedy, I love an epic love story, I love a found family.  And good GOD do I love a character who self-destructs in an effort to do the right thing.

Wei Wuxian isn’t evil.  He’s not even especially malicious.  But when the chips were down and he needed to survive, and to save people, and to figure something out, he took the only avenue left to him, and it was—it was inevitable, really, that it make him the villain of the piece.  He saved a lot of lives.  Everyone except Lan Wangji hates him for it.  He’s already thoroughly despised by the time he starts actually doing things that are objectively bad.  Talk to me about it forever.

My usual list of free-form associative Things I Like That You Will Probably Also Like under the cut:

Wei Wuxian!  I know he’s the main character but I love him so much that he gets a bullet point!  He’s the kind of lighthearted goofball who’s perfected the “I Would Honestly Die Before Showing Emotion To Anyone, How Dare You Imply That I Am Not Sincere In My Perpetual Good Humor” mask, and it hits like a sledgehammer when that mask cracks.  I would watch this actor flip between smiles and homicidal rage all day.  He gets a hug from Son Boy in the last episode and I almost cried.  50000/10.

Lan Wangji!  A great love interest!  Noble to the core!  Incredibly bitchy!  I want five more just like him!

This is where I mention that China has strict censorship laws, so, despite the fact that they kiss and have sex and get married and the whole nine in the book, the show is all Intense Staring And Love Declarations Where They Never Say The L-Word.  But like.  Please trust me, it’s actually So Romance.  If anything I think I like the  romance in the show better.

Wen Ning!

I don’t have anything else to say about him, I just love him so goddamn much.  He and his sister Wen Qing are stars and the rest of these sinners don’t deserve them.

COMPETENT. VILLAINS.  I’ve spilled a lot of ink on this one lately, but I love competent villainy, I love villains who have Goals and plan to Achieve Them and actually pull it off.  Jin Guangyao, the big bad of the “present”(the part where Wei Wuxian is resurrected and kicking around trying to solve a murder), is actually phenomenally good at his job and I support him even though I enjoyed watching him go down in flames.  There are enough villains in this show for everyone to have their preferred type of villain, from Devoted Right Hand Man to Megalomaniacal Overlord to Freewheeling Engine Of Death.  GREAT villains in this show.  Which brings me to…

YI! CITY! ARC!  I’m not going to tell you that much about it, but it’s dark and tragic and features my very favorite villain in the entire show, Xue Yang, who is just.  *chef kiss*  A horrible monster of a man.  An unapologetic, cold-eyed shriek of a villain.  The very best at what he does, and what he does is absolutely horrible, and I would watch an entire series about this five-ish episode arc.  Also, I’ve adopted Song Lan/Xiao Xingchen from the Tragic Ships Shelter and someone should toss me a headcanon ask for them.  Any AU your little heart desires.  I love them.

THE MAGIC!  I know it took me a long time to get here, but it’s a very character driven show and I am a very character driven person and I just wanted to yell about characters for a minute.  But anyway, I’m told that the Untamed is a great onboarding point for this genre of Chinese fantasy novel, because they do a really good job of making the necessary points accessible.  I had no familiarity with wuxia/xianxia/etc when I started watching this and everything about cultivation made sense to me, or at least enough sense to be going on with.  It’s very lovely and fascinating and it’s where they put their Entire Non-Clothing Budget.

This is where I mention that their effects department clearly used their entire funding for, like, cool sword stunts and beautiful clothing.  The wolf puppet in particular is just.  Almost adorably terrible.  If that’s going to severely impact your enjoyment, Idk what to tell you, man.

Related to the above, I love plotlines about characters losing control of their magic.  That’s all I’m going to say about it.

Unreliable narrators, baby! They set up a lot of concrete facts about Wei Wuxian in the first two episodes that become obvious as complete bullshit as you go on, and it’s very satisfying to watch!  See also, Nie Huaisang, the most unreliable narrator of them all, whom I adore.

Beyond all those things…it’s just got a lot of great relationships in it.  It’s hugely driven by the affection people have for each other, or the places they feel they’vebeen deprived of that affection.  It has a lot of iterations of the same relationship in wildly distinct ways, if that makes sense—offhand, there are maybe four major sets of siblings, five if you count the Jins, and they are all radically different and insanely compelling.  The basic structure of Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji, the “black cultivator/white cultivator on a crusade to change the world” thing, appears a lot of times, and goes horribly awry in a slightly different way for all of them.  That kind of in-universe repetition of themes, doing the same thing over and over again looking for the Right Path, is one of my favorite things to appear in a story—see also, the Kencyrath (twins, Dreamweavers, Knorth lords, loyal Kendar, etc), the Animorphs (warrior teams, deaths on the field, etc), any number of other things I yell about.

TL;DR: The story is great and the cultivation is fascinatingand the schemes are elaborate, but

No, they actually didn't. Pyrrha had to go in order to have a threat to the main crew, because of how strong she was; which would become even more had she gained half-maiden powers. On top of that her death and Penny's both hit Ruby JUST AS FUCKING HARD as Jaune. Pyrrha died being a badass self-sacrificing (cause I'm 99% sure she went into the fight with Cinder thinking she had no damn chance) fucking heroic warrior trying to stop the big bad. That wasn't for Jaune, it was her doing it for her school and everyone. The way your ass frames it she died while mentoring him, when that's completely not the case. Oh and just to cover the bases, she's also fucking allowed to fall for the guy too and that isn't bad writing because its not to your preference. If that's where that tone was tapping into.

Adam served exactly the amount he should and was tied more into Blake's story than the WF, the only ones bitching about that side of things are incels and simps that had come up with headcanons for him. Your ass doing a "I can understand where they're coming from" is just more showing how you don't have a clue on character & story.

Yeah, I'll laugh my fucking ass off at the notion that Weiss and Ruby have more goddamn chemistry; because WHAT? No, they fucking don't at all. But that does show a bias.

I watched up to about halfway through Season 4. Season 3 ended on a high point that had me excited for more, but basically nothing happened afterwards and I got bored and dropped it. I say the same thing as Hbomberguy because I agree with him; the show is an attempt at anime made by people who enjoy the superficial aspects of anime but fail to look beneath the surface to examine the themes.

Monty's fight scenes were excellent (and even after he died -rest in peace -the fights continued to be excellent; Pyrrha vs. Mercury is probably my favorite of the whole series), but his unwillingness to work hand-in-hand with the writers in charge of providing context let the whole show down.

I haven't seen past season 4 personally, but I've heard many RWBY fans disparaging the series since, especially Season 8, and I have no reason to doubt their testimony.
