Rufus Wainwright - Going To A Town (Official Music Video)
[I'm So Tired Of You, America]
But I don't know where I'm going Searching for that place It's not inside me I wonder where I'll go Don't we always linger 'Cause we know this ain't had no good
I'm going to a town that has already been burnt down I'm going to a place that has already been disgraced I'm gonna see some folks who have already been let down I'm so tired of America
I'm gonna make it up for all of The Sunday Times I'm gonna make it up for all of the nursery rhymes They never really seem to want to tell the truth I'm so tired of you, America
Making my own way home Ain't gonna be alone I've got a life to lead, America I've got a life to lead
Tell me, do you really think you go to hell for having loved? Tell me, enough of thinking everything that you've done is good I really need to know After soaking the body of Jesus Christ in blood I'm so tired of America
I really need to know I may just never see you again, or might as well You took advantage of a world that loved you well I'm going to a town that has already been burnt down I'm so tired of you, America
making my own way home Ain't gonna be alone I've got a life to lead, America
I'm making my own way home Ain't gonna be alone I've got a life to lead, America
I'm making my own way home Ain't gonna be alone I've got a life to lead, America

About covid being over: are we just meant to put our entire social lives, our entire society on pause forever? My mental health plummeted during lockdown and will take years to recover. Now that there's vaccines and crowd immunity and less deadly strains we ARE meant to learn to deal with it as a given, the way we have with many deadly diseases in the past, and move on. So for the sake of life moving on at some point it's **normal** to treat it as a cold, and I'm saying this as someone who's lost people during the pandemic too. Please do not fear monger.
No, but you SHOULD care about other people enough to still mask.
I am NOT fearmongering.
Covid is still dangerous, especially to the many MANY people who are immunocompromised and people who cannot get the vaccines (for whatever reason).
I know several people who THIS YEAR caught permanently disabling covid, despite all being fully vaccinated.
I am not saying you have to quarantine yourself anymore. That was NOT a thing I said. There is a world of difference between wishing that other people cared enough to MASK, a thing that is NOT HARD AT ALL, and demanding that people still observe full quarantine protocols.
Plugging your ears and closing your eyes and refusing to listen when people are still justifiably worried, and not listening to experts that haven't been pressured by the government to say 'COVID IS NOT A THREAT ANYMORE YAAAY!!!' just makes you a fool.
I know that's harsh, but it's the truth.
Hospitals are no longer required to report covid cases and covid deaths as such. This is a GIANT RED FLAG that people are happily ignoring so they can feel safe.

I'm genuinely nervous about this issue. It seems like the covers I like the most have had the issues I've been really upset by, and given that I am in LOVE with this cover...the trend is not promising.

I am trying really, REALLY hard not to fall into the trap of catastrophizing everything, to look on the bright side and attempt to plan ahead, but today is one of those days where it's just so fucking hard to do that. All I want is to be able to have some cash in the bank to fall back on, but I can't even keep it long enough to have the ability to fall back on it in the future.

Consider Yelan's facial expression to be my own in reaction to opinions shared on both X and Tumblr, and I guess I'm in the minority of the 'loud ones', but I'm pretty excited for Natlan since that trailer, actually. The previous teasers left me a little 'eh', but this definitely got my hopes back up, and I'm back in the right spirits for it (and ready to catch some Pokémon.)
Now I wouldn't be me if I didn't touch on the salt that I've seen scattered across the dash, so here I go. Listen, I read people's objections and I see what you're all aiming at, but in that light want to note that it's often incredibly easy to point fingers (arguably too much so) at others while being, quite honestly, hopefully rather aware that many of our own countries, cultures, and its populations across the board (and no, I'm not excluding anyone here) would likely be just as easily guilty as MHY is with these things. And no, I'm not blindly defending them, but I also won't point fingers at only one without pointing them everywhere else as well, including those you might think would 'never do such things', because I'm absolutely certain that they would. /continues on in the tags.
#we all wear biased lenses. and no-- 'informing yourself through social media' doesn't make you aware of how cultures work/look.#people informing themselves through social media is the /worst trend/ that the 2000/2010s have ever brought us. it's insane.#i'm sorry i'm also very tired of people deciding who are minorities and when. and who is allowed to 'get away with things' and who aren't.#and who is guilty and who isn't. and how “everyone is supposed to do everything right” when most people don't even know...#how the culture of their neighboring country genuinely looks outside of simple stereotypes (and usually only bad ones).#we also need to ultimately realize that mhy is chinese. it has (uniquely) gotten a lot of praise for its presentation of japanese culture.#(from what i hear) which is incredibly rare for a chinese company (and others). and then...#it's doing cultures further away from its own less justice. it didn't exactly do mondstadt great. it played into stereotypes.#and then combined them from multiple cultures. same with fontaine. it played into stereotypes /yet again/ in the same way the west does it.#and not just stereotypes from one country and culture. but /several/. but do most people who aren't familiar with those cultures know this?#no. they don't. and why would they? look at even just the west. europe and north america think that they're similar. /they are so not/.#if WE can't/won't even get it right. and yet we pretend to every damned day; why are we condemning a country halfway across the globe?#and also no-- i don't think latam or africa would portray china properly. or france. or the states.#... but you know what all this'll still do? cause people to look up and go 'hey this is so cool-- i want to know the inspiration'.#and people will still look into it. and people will learn.#and people will be drawn to them in life outside of their homes. or at least the ones who want to touch grass. and maybe even foreign grass#sanity knows i've looked infinitely more into chinese culture and customs because of liyue than ever before. with a much higher...#interest than i've ever admittedly had in regards to china. /ever/. just like i've had other games do the same for other cultures...#way across the globe.#[ salt. ] should i be quieter next time? / no. no… it's fine. children don't learn unless you shout at them.#[ out of character. ] don't bend or water it down. don't try to make it logical. rather: follow your most intense obsessions mercilessly.

me: people don't seem to hear me when I say I've tried everything to get a job. I've been doing this for over 6 months now. I promise you there is not an avenue I haven't explored. I've reached out to nonprofits and the government for emergency funds. I've applied to gig works and retail. I have an upwork. I've tried finding freelance opportunities. I've applied for jobs in-person, hybrid, and remote. I tailor my resumes and cover letters. I'm active on linkedin. I've done more work, put in more effort, studied harder, and talked to more people on this job hunt than I did for any actual job I've had or when getting my college degree. I haven't received a piece of advice I haven't already tried in months. I'm actually really sick of getting advice for this reason. the unsolicited advice makes me feel like people aren't listening and I get really mad when someone not only suggests something I've tried, but something that only a moron wouldn't have tried at this point.
the crisis line worker I'm texting: That sounds really hard and frustrating. Have you tried looking for remote work?
#my diary#I don't have the screenshots cuz it only got worse and I ragequit but when I tell you this is nearly verbatim#I'm understanding why mad means insane now I genuinely feel like I'm going to explode#it's interesting cuz I saw an interaction in the group chat earlier today that reminded me of this phenomenon#where when people vent they do it for one of two reasons: to be heard or to be helped#most people respond with help and when you want to be helped that's fine#but when you just want to be heard jumping straight to solutions and advice can feel like a disconnect and like the helper isn't listening#or doesn't care#and I'll be honest I had to manually learn this I'm a chronic advice giver who had to learn how to deal with people who just want a listene#I texted the stupid crisis people because I *thought* I just wanted to be heard and listened to and not problem-solved#and I know this stupid divide exists so I was very up-front with 'I don't need solutions#in fact unsolicited solutions will just piss me off'#I don't need to troubleshoot why I'm unemployed I'm unemployed because America is fucking broken and I'm a piece of shit DEI with no networ#so you can imagine how frothing-at-the-mouth blind with rage I must feel right now#reaching out to a crisis line for help#front-loading the conversation with 'please do not give me advice I don't want it and I promise you have nothing new to offer'#and then getting what was actually such breathtakingly stupid advice I had to read it four times to really register it as real#anyway thanks for nothing lady I feel even worse now#this in the wake of really obnoxious advice from a friend earlier#it came from a good place but it betrayed a level of obliviousness to any situation outside of their own that just left me feeling tired#and challenging it would have just made it sound like I'm just making excuses#like all of this is my fault somehow#like I'm not dedicating the majority of my free time to applying for jobs and adding to my portfolio and practicing job interview questions#you're so right bestie it's my fault for not just applying for jobs online (I do)#or insist on getting relocation assistance in the mountain of job offers I'm apparently receiving (0)#80 applications I've clearly learned nothing maybe I SHOULD kill myself#I hate this I hate what this bullshit is doing to me and what it's turning me into#doing all of this during puberty 2 too? I'm so fucking ANGRY#and being so angry all the time is just pissing me off even more!!!!!!!!!#gonna go smash my head against the concrete floor for a few hours I guess

I cannot believe they're bringing the 1776 commission back. in the year of our lord Ken Burns' documentary? after they got lambasted in their last term by almost every colonial historian in the nation? they're like hold up let me try and lie to these kids again real quick before they learn the truth in november. I need trump to die and go to hell for what he's done to solidify the american revolution as a symbol for nationalism and white supremacy alone.

genuinely really frustrating that people will like. choose to accept the age mistake made in assassin as canon for deathbringer when it actively contradicts older material. like. sorry idk if this is me being unfair here but genuinely like. why would you think it's intentional when deathbringer is described in main series as maybe a year or two older than glory at most, and can canonically not be any older than 9 due to stated timeline facts in the main series.
like. I get not liking glorybringer, i really do. no ship is for everyone. hell, even if assassin specifically makes you feel weird about it, so be it, to each their own. i can undertsnad that too. and yes, the glorybringer fans who think the age gap are canon are also in the wrong. they're being really gross, i don't think it's necessary to disclaim that, that feels given, but like... that only comes to my point still of like, i really don't understand taking a spin-off as canon over the main series. i don't really understand prioritizing later content as canon as opposed to the main work over spin-off as canon. why should a spin-off take jurisdiction just cuz it's newer? i feel like the older the canon is, the more likely it is the newer stuff will make mistakes. to me, in the case of a contradiction, the main series should be taken to? a spin-off is meant to supplement the main series, so shouldn't it only supplement canon that doesn't contradict?
like also, i get being frustrated it isn't fixed, but also. like. i obviously have not worked with a publisher before, but if I was writing for fucking scholastic books, no matter how well fucking beloved my series was, I don't know if I could risk being like "hey. can you pull my books from shelves and e-stores for me so that I can edit one line?" Like. I really don't think there's any reality in which I can make a corporation agree to that kind of thing, no matter what that one line may fuck up about my main story. like it's not even the only mistake she makes in the winglets. she calls deathbringer a rainwing in the flip book, but we're not hailing that as canon in retrospect, right? I don't know. I think it's unfair to presume that she's choosing not to fix it as opposed to it being an improbable to downright impossible thing to ask of a publisher. like yes tui is an incredibly successful author but i really don't know if we can presume she has that much actual sway on her publisher.
it's just really exhausting as a deathbringer enjoyer to feel like if I want to talk about and enjoy his character, and yes, that includes context given in the assassin winglet once you ignore the timeline error, i feel like I constantlyyy have to be saying "yes I think the timeline error is an error. no i don't think deathbringer is 13." like. every time i bring him up. i'm a riptide fan I'm used to it but also it's sooooo tiring to go into a character tag for a guy i like and be swamped with hatred for him and it's so much worse for deathbringer than riptide because in the deathbringer tag I have to deal with being actively accused of excusing gross shit for liking him instead of people just saying that my blorbo is boring.
#by nightwings standards deathbringer isn't even a fucking adult. like even when I was first reading the books he never read as an adult to#me. and the assassin winglet only further adds to this for me not lessens. he reads so much as#teenager/barely in his 20s guy who grew up#way too fucking fast for his own good but fully buys into his own narrative that he's got everything sorted and together#the way the age system works as I've always interpreted it is that like. each age up to 7 covers a wide but decreasing number of human#maturity years every time and then slows to the years being one-to-one by the time they're 7#with 7 corresponding to 18#which makes the nightwings not counting dragonets as fully grown until 10 the equivalent to how 21 is kind of like being an Actual Adult#law wise in America at least i mean to say#deathbringer can't even legally buy beer yet is what I'm saying. some hotels wouldn't let him check in without an accompanying adult#deathbringer#misc#wings of fire#wof#sorry for complaining in main tag but I'm so fucking tired of being made to feel gross for liking a character over material that#no casual fan of the series is even going to know exists or read that is so clearly a timeline error based on everything in the actual#series that I read#does my joke about him not being able to buy beer make up for it#do you guys still think i'm cool#on the note of publishing too#there's no reason to think scholastic could even make it happen in a timely fashion even if tui did ask for the change to the books. like.#looking up working with scholastic reviews some of the most common negative reviews are about poor management#i'm not trying to white knight for her or anything i think she's a flawed human being like anyone else I just think if ur gonna critique he#you should do it about stuff that's like actually poorly handled in her series. not a timeline error in a spin-off. like. come on.

alright so here's the current plan with the nominations to the main tourney, not the oc tourney. tomorrow will decide if i'm closing them early or not. if we get a bunch of submissions and it turns out the last 2 days were just slow, then they'll continue to stay open until friday at least. if we continue only getting a handful of submissions, then submissions will close wednesday the 10th, 11:59 pm PST

my biggest pet peeve is how many people in my life (knowing i know things about Plants and Science) ask me if things are weeds are not. stop asking me if that's a weed! weeds do not exist! there are no weeds! it's only a weed if you don't want it there! are you trying to make a pristine flower bed or growing crops? okay, then that might be a weed if you don't want it to be growing there. is it just growing in a random place? is it just growing in a field? then leave it alone, it's just a little guy! it might even be a beneficial little guy, you just don't like how it looks! now in some circumstance it might be a (harmful) invasive plant we should be eradicating, but most of the time i get asked this it is literally just some innocuous plant or flower
i'm for real gonna cry if one more person points to a native wildflower and asks me if that is a weed or not

I got a packet from the social security people I have to fill out and have sent back in--by mail--by the 26th. I got it on Friday. And I haven't looked at it til now, bc I was so stressed out about my dog being sick and i feel so overwhelmed. They want all my medical records from the last year, which I don't have, because I've only started keeping that stuff since I had my complete mental breakdown and she took me out of work. And there's so many pages and so much information they want. They have to nitpick my whole fucking life, before they can decide I deserve health. Being disabled in this country is a fucking nightmare. Instead of trying to hep, the just look for reasons to disqualify you. Because they don't want to help us; they just want us to go away
#america is a trashfire#i can't even leave my house alone#i literally have been in tears every time they call me#bc taking on the phone to strangers gives me that much anxiety#i can't function#i can't remember anything longer than a few seconds#i can't focus or concentrate on anything#i have to set alarms just to remind me to do things like eat or take meds#i forget to shower sometimes. others i'm too tired to bother#i literally went an entire week without showering recently. bc i didn't remember to do it#i am not well#and i just need help long enough to get well#but how am i supposed to get it? if they make you wait 200+ days just to hear if your claim is accepted#how am i supposed to survive until then?#I can't work bc i can't leave home with having panic attacks#i can't file for unemployment bc to do so you have to be actively looking for a job#and to get disability i have to prove that i can't work#i could probably work if i found a job i could do from home that payed enough to live off of#not to mention they want me to list any income from may-july#which i didn't make any working. but my brother lives me and gives me money to deposit for the bills#that are all in my name bc he hadn't established credit when we moved in. and my credit was better back then#bc i couldn't afford to leave home until i was 28. so my credit was literally based off my student loan payments#and they were pretty low bc i did the income based thing#i'm getting my parents to come help me with the paperwork#not bc i can't understand it. but bc i literally cannot remember something i read 30 seconds ago

The fact that men are so annoyed at the Barbie movie makes me laugh so hard. It's not even the best movie ever. It didn't claim to be the best movie ever. It's not framed as revolutionary. It's just a movie.
When men praise the worst movie ever as the most revolutionary cinematic experience around, I don't go to them and ruin their party. I just don't care for it and go on with my life.
But apparently when a movie that's directed by a woman and it's for women and about women hits the box office, it will have to be a masterpiece, otherwise why even bother, no?
Cry, babies, aww, you see yourself in the token side character? Aww, have you seen a woman in any movie from the 2000s? There just to please the main character? If they didn't forget to write her in the scene.
Barbie is fun. It makes some good points, it has some fun songs, it has a nice ending and some emotional scenes. It might not be the best movie from this year, but it was quite enjoyable, if you like the genre.
People who hate it on principle are weak and shouldn't speak on it. Goodbye.

Hey if you're in the replies of this post saying something like "typical of Appalachia to be backward/idiots/religious weirdos" maybe have a think about why your first instinct on a post about one group of fools is to generalize your derogatory thoughts to an entire region that A) isn't a monolith and B) has historically been one of the poorer regions in the country?
Reminder that you don't have to be a dick to all of Appalachia to criticize 1 (one) oddball group of people who are doing something dumb. We have history, culture, and yeah, religion, that goes beyond "let copperhead bite me to prove I love Jesus."
I love snake handling, as a religious practice.
Because while they can point at some Bible verses to justify it (a couple gospels use "snakes can't hurt you" as a metaphor for strength of belief, and they took it very litteraly) it's basically a modern invention. Like, the American Christian practice of snake handling is barely over a hundred years old! That's very young for a Christian practice.
It's younger than Mormons and Christian Scientist, and it's mostly limited to my area: the Appalachians.
It's basically just a regular Pentecostal service (which often involves laying of hands for healing, and my favorite Christian tradition, glossolalia!) except they add The Snake.
Like, you're at church, and there's the pews, and people are going up and Feeling The Spirit, and some of them are Picking Up The Snake.
That's alright, it's a harmless snake, right?
NOPE! They use venomous snakes. Usually American ones (your rattlesnakes and copperheads) but sometimes they import cobras and the like.
The venomous nature is the point. They believe that if they're blessed by God, they'll be able to handle the dangerous snakes without being hurt.
And given that this is a relatively rarely practiced thing, and it's connected to faith healing, you might think it's just a con. There's some traveling "holy man" with a well-trained snake that he can "miraculously" handle without being attacked, right?
Oh god no. It's a bunch of different guys and they get bitten all the time. Wikipedia has a list of 15 of 'em who died because of it, and that's just the "notable" ones.
People are allowed to just come up and touch the venomous snake! No training or safety equipment needed, just Jesus. Reportedly people who get bitten are not considered to be lacking in faith, just "it was their time to go". Like, they don't even call the hospital about anti-venom. You just die.
(Did I mention sometimes they drink poison too? Mainly strychnine, possibly because it's survivable in small doses. Same reason: their faith will protect them)
Anyway I really do love it. It's such an unusual thing to jam into Christianity, that I can't help but be mesmerized by it.
But it makes up the majority of 20th and 21st century American deaths from snakes. Most people avoid snakes so even the most deadly venomous snakes in America usually only ever kill by surprise, like someone reaches into a gopher hole and gets bit, or they accidentally bother one trying to piss in a bush. And even then, we've got anti-venoms! Lots of people bitten make it to the hospital and get treated.
So naturally the main group that ends up dying from snakes is the ones who are constantly handling deadly snakes and then refuse medical care.
