[PSWG x Splatoon Manga]

So here’s a few attempts, this was originally done traditionally, again it was so ugly I won’t post it here. Anyways, this was edited, I had to add shading, fix Aloha’s face, and fix the background. I'll link the original (reluctantly since again it's ugly). This might be my least favorite but I won’t deny that it was a stepping stone to studying the art style. Took me from Aug 19 2021 - Dec 9 2021 to finish it.

I usually remake screenshots traditionally before fixing it in Ibis paint, so this won't be the last one.

Once I uploaded it to Ibis, I took 20 extra minutes to fix it, which isn't something I usually do with my art. But it made me dislike it even less.

i hope this isn't weird to ask, but I've been taking a bunch of pictures in Splatoon and I kinda want to start editing them, but I currently only have an android phone and no computer, do you have any editing apps you'd recommend? Also any tutorials on how to use them (I have like, very very minor experience in stuff like Photoshop but not much else)

hmmm well i also started out just with my phone so you should be fine!

i don't think my process was the most optimized, but i'll share it anyway.

(this is going to be under a read more since it ended up being long)

I used ibis paint x when i started out, which is a free drawing app available on pretty much every mobile device. It may take some getting used to all the buttons on there(it took me a while to learn) but i would think you could find a tutorial online for the basic functions of everything. The way i learned was by just messing with every button to see what they did and figuring it out slowly from that.

And here are the steps as to how i edited:

take the image you want to make transparent(if you don't want to make your own transparents yet mine are free to use and there are official transparent renders of certain characters as well that you can easily find on inkipedia)

just import it into your new drawing

take the eraser tool and manually erase the background.

If needed: try to redraw any parts that are missing/were obscured by other things in the image(such as items in the foreground or word bubbles if it's a manga panel). this was sort of easy for me to start to get a basic hold of since i draw already. If you don't feel confident with this, just choose an image where the character is fully visible.

In a new layer(underneath the character one), add your background.

In a new layer(above the character one) add any particle affects or the like.

You're finished!

You can also draw extra decorations (like hearts and stars) manually with the brush tool! Make sure it's on a separate layer so as not to permanently affect anything else if you decide you don't like it!

I also think canva may have a mobile app version? I have a paid version of it through someone else that i use on the website version, and i can give a tutorial for how i work in that as well. I don't know how the free version compares, but it should be pretty similar?

In canva i do the following:

select the 500x500 logo option if you want to make an icon, or another size if you want something else.

Press uploads, then upload your picture.

once you have the image you want on your canvas, click on it and select "edit photo"

choose "bg remover" and let it do its thing.

once its done loading, if there are any errors click on bg remover again and fix them with the erase and restore options.

Add a background and extra details and there you go!

I find the last step to be a lot easier in canva since it comes preloaded with a ton of options as long as you know what to look for!

Also note: i DON'T like canvas bg remover tool. it is inaccurate and kinda dumb so i would just do the transparents manually through ibis if i was you. i just dont have any other option rn. If you choose to do the transparents in ibis make sure you click "save image as transparent png" when you are downloading it so you can upload it to canva.

As for how i choose what to do and all that, i can try to explain some things that work for me.

lets use this image of dedf1sh for example:

lets say i wanted to make an icon with this. what wuld i use for backgrounds and such?

for starters: colors. Take a color that's already on the characters design/associated with them and then look for things that match that color scheme.

so some examples of that:

some other things to use would be things associated with the character. so for dedf1sh it would be subways, djs, music, the 80s aesthetic of octo expansion, sanitization, etc.

so here's how i would incorporate things like that:

but just a character and a image can (sometimes) be boring to me, so i like to add extra things as well.

theres always my tried and true: the white shape

you can use any shape and any color really, i just default to white squares a lot since i think it looks clean. variations like a neon affect can also be a fun way spruce things up a bit!

borders of all kinds also work well to add some more stuff:

and extra little shapes like hearts and stars can be fun!

and things like glitch effects, blurs, monochrome/other color filters, etc can can also make things interesting:

put all of this together with a theme and you can make some other cool things! stuff like seasons, colors, aesthetics, pride flags, and more can all be fun themes to make things around and thats how i end up with icons like these:

you can also make things that aren't icons (obviously) but i don't have as much experience with that.. i would just say to try and make sure things feel balanced when working with a bigger canvas? don't have everything cluttered up in one area. and be aware of the sizings of what you are using. you don't want things to end up being too small.

i would work first on familiarizing yourself with whatever you choose to work in, and i would look at other people's work to get inspiration as well!

and if anyone else has any suggestions for better/more efficient ways to do any of this feel free to add on! this is just my personal process, and im sure everyone uses something different. so try new things and find what works for you!

I think it's definitely... something. You have to download some apps to have some brushes, if you don't know how to create your own and tend to look for brushes others do (like me😭) it definitely shocks you. At first I was like: ??? Where is the option to look for brushes online???

You also have to pay for some of those brushes/in the apps for brushes, I mean. Which, is fair, I guess???but at the same time it shocked me, because, well, ibis paint.

Procreate already comes with lots of brushes included, but personally...none of them were of my liking and I kind of altered one that I found similar to the one I used on ibis paint. I still like better my Ibis paint brush.

It doesn't have as much filters as ibis paint either, I mean it has the essentials, but that's it.

Ibis paint is way easier to just, use. I had to look in Google where the ruler was and how to turn my canvas 😭, maybe it's just because I'm clueless 😭😭😭.

As for quality, I do find procreate better. I mean, no adds, no having to look adds to use my brushes, and you can do animations in better quality too! Tbh, I thought the animation part was other app and I was so disappointed. Still... it's kind of meh, but at least you can create your animations in whatever quality and size you want.

Idk where you live, but it costed me 15€ (14.99 or something like that) and, to be honest, I don't think it's really worth it. maybe it's because I had lot of expectations...and because I'm poor and I don't like spending money lmao, but, idk, that's just my opinion. I'm really getting use to it and I can say that is, idk, more pleasant to use than ibis? Maybe it's how it looks, well it definitely it's because definitely the lack of adds lmao, I've been drawing a LOT lately.

I don't think it's hard to use, maybe a little tricky at first but nothing a couple drawings can't fix.

The brushes are meh to me, but if you like texture and all that, then I think you'll like them. My art is kind of...messy, and none of the brushes it had really catched my attention.

My conclusion is...that it's not necessary and if you want you can keep using ibis paint. I still have some sketches on ibis I'll finish on ibis because I feel like procreate doesn't give me the same result. Maybe it's just me. I'm not saying the app is bad tho, as I said, it definitely has more quality than Ibis, but I guess that's what you pay for? Idk. I'm still learning to love procreate, so sorry if this comes off as negative/discouraging :(

I hope my opinion can give you a new perspective and help you choose if you buy or not procreate tho, if you do, I'd love to know what you think! Maybe having your POV helps me love procreate more.

hi!! I'll try to make a step by step explanation for ya

first you're going to want to download whatever sprite sheet you need from here ↓

once you're done with that, make a new canvas in ibis paint and import the sprite sheet onto the canvas (or just import the sheet as the canvas itself).

next you're going to want to single out what sprites you actually want to edit, and erase the rest of them that you don't care about. confine all the sprites to a small area on the canvas that way you don't have to keep zooming in and out to edit each one.

make sure you are using the "digital pen" brush set to 1 pixel and youre free to edit them however you want! you can also use the fill bucket tool if need be but make sure the strength is set to 0% and the expansion is set to 0.0 px.

Once you're finished with your sprites and you want to export the image, you might notice that it's really blurry when you post it anywhere. you can fix this by sizing up your canvas or the sprites themselves, however, if you don't have your settings set right it could be blurry when you resize them. to fix this, make sure the interpolation method is set to "Nearest Neighbor (Dot)". It's at the bottom of all the options you get when you go to translate your selection, under the angle and zoom bars.

Field Trip Perils

Pt: 1

Hum was quietly waiting to say goodbye to her friends as she had planned to go to the human realm, primarily the Republic.

The Acadian university had planned a field trip to explore human culture due to the vast cultural differences. Where Arcadia was a place at peace and everyone used what gifts they had to make their society better, it would seem that the Republic was the opposite. When the realms collided, magic leaked into the Republic. Causing people to mutate or unlock some inherited form of magic.

Given that not all use their power for good, Arcadia has a safety barrier that only allows those who have proven themselves to the barrier that they hold no ill intentions inside. With the rise of crime, the various discrimination of smaller fae, and blatant corruption. The Republic made a Heroes Association, training people to keep others safe.

Though, it was most definitely not the fix that they ever so claimed it to be. Hidden intentions and agendas inside their own associates still showed many bias towards smaller fae.

Arcadia warned many smaller fae alike to always travel someone larger, or at least in groups, if going to the Republic. As such, Hum was happy that her human cultural class was primarily larger elves, including her high elf friend, Charlie. He wasn't the tallest, but standing at 5'6" made her messily almost 5 inch height nothing. Charlie had long chesnut brown hair, a soft face, and bright green eyes. The two were the first to pair up, given she was the only fairy, and no one rushed to pair with her.

She had departed after giving her fairy friends Sera, Sunbright, and Casper hugs goodbye. Along with the promises to send them plenty of pictures! Sadly, her fellow friends couldn't attend the field trip due to conflicting classes. Other wise, Sera and Sunbright would have attended. The duo wanted to go into the hero field in the Republic, where Hum's primary was communication studies, along with public speaking. Though she had just started with that, and was timid, soft spoken. She wanted to advocate for the fae that were taken advantage of due to their smaller height.

With the field trip getting ready to depart, Hum perched on Charlie's shoulder, waving her friends off. "See you guys in a day or two!"

When they crossed the bridge that connected both realms, there was a tour guide awaiting them. Alongside a bus to take them to a small town in the Republic called Outcatch. Though unbeknownst to the fae tourists, it was called 'Smuggler's Den' by the locals.

"Alright, the names Andrew. I'll be your guide, or at least somewhat. I'm mainly here if you have questions and to keep a head count." Andrew was a rougher looking human, shaggy black hair, scruffy face. Shades on, flowery dress shirt tucked into a pair of black slacks. Himself looking more like a vacationer than a tour guide.

"Getting a head count now their are only eight of you, and you've already agreed on your pairings. I like to see that, less work for me." Andrew shuffled the papers in his hands and gestured to the bus. "Load up and buckle in. We've got a two hour bus ride ahead of us."

The group quickly did as told, and when all settled on the bus, Andrew did a roll call. After making sure all was accounted, he signaled the bus driver to head out. Before pulling out maps for everyone to have, wanting everyone to know the restricted areas for smaller fae. Not everyone in Outcatch was fairy accommodating, though this wasn't unheard of. Many claim it's for the safety of the smaller fae, but mostly it was because they didn't want to have to accommodate or be held responsible if something happened to them.

Two hours went by rather quickly for Charlie and Hum. The duo had agreed not to limit each other, as Charlie did want to enter some stores that wouldn't allow her to. She figured she would shop in ones that did whilst he shopped in ones that didn't. The map they received showed a fountain that they could inevitably meet back up at. When the bus stopped at their destination, Andrew stood once more.

"Once again, I was mainly hired as a head count. Just stay in pairs, don't separate, and have fun. We'll meet back here in a few hours, then we go to the hotel." Andrew made sure to stress to stay together, though he clearly wasn't going to baby them. Hum was still perched on Charlie's shoulder as they left the bus, Outcatch was a rather small town, with little to no stores that allowed small fairies. There were two shops at most, and one diner.

Hum stood to take off, her wings humming as she fluttered them quickly. "I figured we'd give each other an hour? Then meet at the fountain?" Charlie offered to which Hum agreed to. Seeing how there was much more for him to explore than her. The duo then split, Hum managing to do a small amount of shopping with what little options she had. They had also agreed to eat after they met back up, so once she finished with two tiny shopping bags in hand, she landed on the fountain's rim. Playing on her phone while awaiting her larger companion, occasionally checking her texts given that Charlie was a tad late. Soon, a few minutes turned to an hour late! Growing rather frustrated, she sent a message: Where are you??

A shadow soon engulfed her small form, blocking out all the sunlight she had been basking on her before. She gasped, looking up in hopes that it was Charlie; finally finished shopping so that they could continue their day together. Her hopes dashed just as quickly away as she locked eyes with a human man that wasn't Charlie: tall, lanky, and had a rough scar across his face as it was twisted into a sinister smile.

“Aren’t you far from home? Where’s your keeper gone?” He asked in a rough but low tone so as not to attract unwanted attention. Hum froze like a deer in headlights, unsure of what to do, confrontation not being her forte.

“I-I’m fine thank you, I am waiting for my friend.” She managed to say, ignoring the ‘keeper’ comment. The man sneered, looking around at the empty plaza around them.

“Looks like no one’s around right now, tiny. Be a shame if someone just-“ Before she could even react; he had snatched her up into his hand. “-snatched you right up. Little birdies like yourself can cost a pretty penny in the market. It’s rare we catch you alone.”

“N-No!” She gasped, his grip on her firm, threatening nearly suffocating her when she tried to struggle. Hum had dropped her phone in the quick altercation, and the man simply stepped on it before pulling out a cloth bag for smaller animals and fae.

“If you make a sound, I will suffocate you to sleep.” He threatened before she was helplessly shoved into the cloth bag. He pulled the ties on it after he released her from his hand into the cloth. The rough cloth caught her as she was dropped inside, unable to see anything in the confined space. She was shaken slightly as he tied the bag to his waist.

She was quiet, anxiety overtaking her as she curled up in the bag, tears silently sliding down her face. The rhythm of the man’s walking was making her cloth prison sway back and forth, the man taking her to gods knows where.

“Kaiden, you had better have your quota made today. The boss doesn’t like excuses, regardless of how hard it is to lure away fae’s. Especially with your ugly mug.” Snarked a woman’s voice as her captor stopped, Hum assumed that meant his name was Kaiden.

“Jokes on you, I caught one all by itself! Little thing sitting out in the open, easily snatched up.” Kaiden chuckles as he untied the small bag from his waist. He shook the bag to get a reaction out of the inhabitants of it. A smug smile grew as she yelped from inside the bag.

“S-Stop!” Hum nearly cried out as she was shaken up. She tried to grip the inside of the bag for some kind of support.

“Well I’ll be damned. You actually caught one.” The woman sneered at him before gesturing towards the tables behind her. “Pick a cage, get it set up, and sell it.”

Hum shuddered as they talked about her as if she were some kind of object. She held in a gasp as her prison was suddenly opened, and she ended up being dumped into a bird cage. She landed on her stomach, feathery wings outstretched in an attempt to lessen the fall.

“What a beauty. How the hell did you catch it?” The woman’s icy blue eyes locked onto Hum’s wings. She crossed her arms a little jealous about his catch. “I’m sure she’ll sell as fast as you got her, little thing’s scared, probably submissive, and doesn’t have any trace of magical energy. You hit the jackpot.”

Hum wasn’t snarky like Sera, nor was she as brave. She didn’t want to even look at her captors. The realness of the situation hit her as they talked about her as if she couldn’t understand them, like she were a dumb little birdie. When the cage was suddenly lifted, forcing Hum to jerk up in fear, she was now on display. Other cages nearby held similar content, different fairy types in their own distinctive display, some magically bound. Some with wings cut short so they couldn’t take flight, and she wrapped her wings around her protectively. There wasn’t many of her kind, but it was tragic that there were any at all trapped like this.

Could her friends really make a change for this world? If they treated her people like this, no one would be able to change it. If it kept going like this, Arcadia would close again, but there’s no guarantee they even know about this. Hum didn’t know about this until she had gotten kidnapped into it, her eyes wandering around her prison.

It was a standard birdcage, though it had a padlock on its only entrance. They really left bare, though they probably didn’t want to chance the ‘merchandise’ escaping. She hadn't even noticed the large woman who was accompanied by her High elf boss approach her display with great excitement. Hum is nearly overwhelmed with her own anxiety and fear. Would they clip her wings? Would she see her friends again? Would they be safe? She was snapped out of those looming thoughts as a bubbly feminine loud voice chirped above her.

"You are so freaking cute!! Look at you!"
