Girlie HIIII!!!!!!!
I’ve been well 💓 I’m glad you’re feeling better and back to posting!!
Tbf, I think I made the mullet call off a very grainy photo and it ended up being more bowl cut/lego cut BUT that man truly looks good with any haircut so I’m still frothing over it 🥵 the affinity has to be genetic 100%, like i found mullet Ash 1000000000 times more attractive than non-mullet Ash (he’s cute but he’s not my type, yk? but put a mullet on a man… then he becomes my type 👀). bitch I just love a good mullet.
Also YES!!!! to the dusty cut 🥵🥵🥵 (I follow footy, all of them 🤭 and I so get it, it does things to me too 👀)
ngl I also don’t really remember what was said politically, but I’ll leave it at this we’re wayyy more screwed if that bald dickhead gets elected next year (I hate him with a passion, if you can’t tell).
On to more thirst and fun things, buzz cut Luke smoking though 🥵🥵🥵 that video took me out, I had to actually lie down. I’m so excited for new music and new break up music. We been knew, like the Nashville trip made it obvious and it’s not like he didn’t talk about getting together with the guys to write and record but the TikTok weirdly makes it more official? Idk
Also I’m obsessed with Dirk and Blonde Dirk, like if you ever wanted to know my type… it’s that but with a mullet 🤭
Okay my Spotify Wrapped actually surprised me a lil. I had the 5sos not being my top artist last year. This year I had:
1. 5sos
2. Luke
3. Sabrina Carpenter (short n sweet was my personality for like a whole month, bed chem is such a bop)
4. Ashton
5. Ariana Grande???? This one was the big surprise for me, like I feel like I didn’t listen to her at all…
But unsurprisingly Wildflower was my top song (I listened to it 169 times in one day which I fear is very fitting ✌🏻)
xoxo ⚡ lighter anon ⚡️💋
HAHA LEGO MAN HAIR IS SO REAL when my bf gets that haircut i call it 'man haircut'. like what did you even ask for?? just give me a man haircut??? its not even a bad haircut its just so plain like its not even basic like short back and sides, its just stock? like how the fuck did you get default hair bro what HAHA
yep a mullet makes any man 10000% more hot (even ashton who also isnt my vibe i feel youu)
holy fuck actually LUKE with a dusty would be elite. i think he might be the only one that could pull it off better than cal probably could 🫢🫣🫢🫣 id die. on the topic of luke though WHAT SMOKING VID?!?! the way im running to tiktok rn bitch i need to see that. unpopular opinion but smoking is so hot 🤫🤭 like yeah, totally disgusting, but also soo hot yummy delicious
the dirks hahahaha i love that for you, a fantasy manifest (even if only for a minute long video🥲)
wildflower 169 times in one day is god tier listening HAHA ICONIC I LOVE
i swear theres always at least one artist or song thats a total shock in every wrapped. some how i didnt get any full surprises this year? i had:
1) beabadoobee
2) radiohead (this one is my glimer of hope that if i ever met cal wed have something to talk about cause hes also super into radiohead but i bet he likes their way cooler experimental stuff that i dont have the palette to listen to 🥲)
3) billie holiday
4) the sundays (surprised they werent number 1 or 2 since 4 out of 5 of my top songs this year were sundays songs but ok spotify ??)
5) luke
i honestly think i listened to so much 5sos last year that now their discography feels ranthrough 😅. this was also the first year the strokes havent been in my top artists which was a bit of a surprise
love u girl 🫶🫶🫶🫶
EDIT: i can not find loke smoking vid I REPEAT I CAN NOT FIND IT lord help me

I received an email today from my brother (mind you, i am in my home office and he is like 2 rooms away), it was titled ‘very very very urgent’ and then he yelled from the living room ‘URGENT MEANS CHECK NOW!’ So I did. And I wish I hadn’t. He literally started the email with ‘I am coming to you through email due to the fact that I have been a victim of a horrible, vicious attack by a foot rest and Netflix.’ He wrote an email (cause he can’t write now lol) about his music/qaf idea he had. Turns out what I thought was just a little thought he had, he actually spent days thinking about. I should’ve seen it coming tbh. Anyway, these are just SOME parts i thought I should share but there is so much more. Mostly just him going on and on about Brian/Britin and occasionally getting distracted by different topics such as the fact that he thinks I need new curtains. Anyway, these are some parts copied from his email, that i thought you deserve to see. Some I actually liked but some made me confused and worried: ‘I want videos of my boys to music but that’s hard according to youtube tutorials so I need you or someone else to do it, after all I am a victim of a fall. Please google people for hire. Anyway, these are the songs I have great ideas for: The Winner Takes it all by my homies Abba. Dude Just imagine that shit. It would be for when Justin left Bri Bri for that kazoo player. And Its Brian all sad and lonely. I mean come on dude, the winner takes it all, the loser has to fall? BUT TELL ME DOES SHE KISS YOU LIKE I USED TO KISS YOU (no). Somewhere deep inside you must know I miss you! (My name) tell me that shit doesn’t scream when Justin was returning the bracelet!’ (Here is where he got distracted by the bracelet so im just gonna copy the second/third song part) ‘You know that dude with the pretty voice I told you about? Yeah, his songs too! (He is talking about Noah Kahan) That song All my love could totally fit my boys. Now I know your name but not who you are!!! You got all my love!!! If you need me dear im still the same as I was! Wait for it, the best lyrics that describes my baby boy Bri Bri is coming at you now: You burrowed in under my skin, what id give to have you out from me! At the end of it all, i just hope that your scars heal! SEE?! What the fuck did i just say? I know my pretty boy’ (here he got distracted by Brian the cat for a few paragraphs) ‘and dude, I can’t forget my favorite song Stick Season. Listen to that shit and tell me you can’t see Bri Bri in that chorus? Or like when he hired that dude to cosplay as Justin? It’s in there, go listen, work isn’t that important I can hear you on the phone with mom.’ (This is where he then went on a big rant because he got upset when he realized the songs he suggested are kinda sad aka broken up Britin) ‘Yo no, this is fucked up. Okay, i got it. But I have no ideas how it would be so just imagine parts of the episodes where they’re all over each other happy to this song’ (he linked Bad for business by Sabrina Carpenter) ‘(his friends name) sent this to me and told me it reminded him of me and Bri Bri. Do you think he was fucking with me or not?’ (He got distracted here by his love for brian).
He did also say he wants something to Now that we dont talk and to Is it over now by Taylor Swift. But he couldn’t decide what.
So this is just a tiny part of the email he sent to me. The only other part in the email I actually laughed at was that he just wrote: ‘give me Brian Kinney being hot to these songs and fuck you, I know what I’m talking about, you can’t see the vision cause you don’t find dudes hot.’ (Said by him, a straight man…according to him) songs that he listed: ‘Heartless and Party Monster both by The Weeknd and (i wish this was a joke but i asked and he was serious) Hands up by Ayesha Erotica. Also that one song that mom is obsessed with but it would be just Bri Bri all cute and happy with Blondie.’ (I had to ask my mom and it was Love me like you by little mix)
Anyway, the man has officially lost his fucking mind. This was literally just an email containing song and that was it. He did reveal that it took him 20-30 minutes to write it, which usually would take him like 10-15 minutes but the cast is showing to be a real pain in the ass for him so that’s kind of funny to me personally. Anyway, I just wanted to share whatever the fuck this was because I obviously forwarded it to my cousins and some other people and we are all 1) impressed a little ngl cause he’s onto something at some parts 2) a bit worried and 3)finding all this very funny
Oh and in case you were wondering how he’s doing with qaf? He went back to watch 3x08-3x14….he has watched it each day of the week so far…
HE SENT YOU AN EMAIL FROM THE OTHER ROOM.
But okay fandom, we have our orders. We can repay Brother Anon for all the entertainment he has provided us with some fan creations for after our Dear Sweet Anon does the great reveal.
The Winner Takes it all by ABBA for S3 during the break up with the scene where Justin returns the bracelet
All My Love by Noah Kahan
Bad for business by Sabrina Carpenter
Stick Season by Noah Kahan also the break up with the hiring the Justin lookalike escort.
Now that we dont talk and to Is it over now by Taylor Swift
Heartless and Party Monster both by The Weeknd
Hands up by Ayesha Erotica
Love me like you by little mix
Okay fandom we have our marching orders and they are:
‘give me Brian Kinney being hot to these songs and fuck you, I know what I’m talking about, you can’t see the vision cause you don’t find dudes hot.’ (Said by him, a straight man…according to him)
(from one lesbian to another, anon, I am DYING over this)
#ask winderlylandchime#dear sweet anon#queer as folk#a straight man watches qaf us 2000 in the year of our lord 2023

Teen Witch
Controversial opinion: stories about witches are the best stories. Just look at WandaVision - bitches ate that UP because it’s about WITCHES, which means it’s ultimately about loss and trauma and female (literal) empowerment in the face of those tragedies (and I mean there’s some complicated stuff in there about inflicting trauma upon others, even accidentally, and that’s kind of a witch thing too). And Sabrina is all well and good and everything, but what if you want your witch story to be a little less Dark Arts and a little more candy-coated? Have I got the film for you! Wes requested Teen Witch as part of his quest to expand my cheesy 80s cult classic knowledge, and boy did this one deliver. How 80s-tastic are we talking? Well...
The basic story is this: Louise (Robyn Lively) is a typical teen girl who occupies the nerd level of the high school hierarchy. You know the type - soft-spoken, nerdy best friend, has a crush on the cutest guy in school (Dan Gauthier), made fun of in gym class by all the cheerleaders. One day she crashes her bike in front of a psychic’s home/place of business and goes inside to use the phone, but gets her palm read first. The psychic, named Madame Serena, (Zelda Rubenstein, playing, I’m assuming, herself) tells her she will soon come into some witchy powers on her 16th birthday. When Louise’s birthday rolls around, you guessed it - witching aplenty. She gets the popularity, she gets the cute guy, she ditches her nerdy friend; it’s basically The Princess Diaries without Queen Julie Andrews. But then, y’know, she learns a valuable lesson about the high price of popularity and how important it is to be true to yourse--wait, no she doesn’t, she takes off her magic necklace and smooches with the boy she likes at the school dance and that’s how it ends.
Some thoughts:
This slow motion credit sequence is incredible. See, we just don’t have this anymore, where the movie starts and you have no fucking idea what’s going on. The 80s really knew how to draw an audience in. Is this a dream? Is this a music video? No one knows! That’s why it’s exciting!
Why are tv and movies so obsessed with a completely made-up depiction of what takes place outside a high school’s entrance before the first bell? Apparently there’s a busker festival going on at this high school every day - there’s guys doing BMX tricks, an all white rap group, I think I saw some jugglers.
I’ve actually taught in both middle and high school, so I know this English teacher (Shelley Berman) wouldn’t be fired for being such a shitty teacher, but he should be.
Is this like...a musical? First there was the terrible rapping, now there are cheerleaders doing “the new cheer” which is literally a song just saying “I...LIKE...BOYS!” and there’s a dance routine on top of lockers - there’s a lot of towel choreography. It feels like a musical in the sense that it’s nonsensical, but I don’t actually think it IS a musical. Genre-defying!
It’s kinda creepy that Louise is watching an extended montage of Brad (Gauthier) working out shirtless from the shadows but like...same, girl. Damn, Brad.
Aw, at least Brad is reasonably nice. Louise, show some backbone! You shouldn’t have been too proud to let him drive you home after he ran you off the road on your bike accidentally!
I am just mystified by the market for roles that were appropriate for Zelda Rubenstein in the 80s. What is this niche? Which came first, Zelda Rubenstein, or these characters?
I am also mystified by this gremliny little brother (Joshua John Miller) who seems to be obsessed with eating cake and never washing his hair. He’s like a goblin trapped in a diminutive nonbinary body made of pizza and spite. [ETA: I now feel a little bad for finding him so repellent in this, as the actor wrote one of my favorite meta horror movies, The Final Girls, in 2015. So at least he grew up and made something cool of himself.]
OMFG did Brad just hit the soda machine for her like the fucking Fonz?
There is (temporarily) a Very Good Dog who is not harmed in any way.
In what universe does Louise see what her date, David (Jared Chandler), is wearing and be like “he’s such a geek” when she looks like an extra from Leave it to Beaver.
The DJ just said “OK guys, grab your wallets, it’s a slow song.” What...does that even mean? Is he implying that slow dances are expensive? Ooh or even more nefarious, that there’s a rampant pickpocketing problem during slow dances?
Did Louise...just imply that the number of light years away a star is dictates how soon a wish you make on that star would come true? Listen. I’m no astrophysicist. But I have read enough Neil Degrasse Tyson tweets to know that that’s not how any of this works.
OK I take back what I said, David is a fucking CREEP. Drag his ass, Louise. However, I think she may have straight up murdered him by making him disappear. David is never seen or heard from again in this film.
Obsessed with the dad’s sweaters both because they are ridiculous and because he is the lesser Darren from the original Bewitched.
It feels weird that Louise’s revenge involves forcing Mr. Weaver to take his clothes off in front of the class.Who wants that? Like I get that it’s humiliating for him, but really, you’re only punishing yourself here Louise.
There is a rap-off that is meant to convey electric sexual tension between two nerdy ass white kids.
I don’t know what it was like at your school, but I can tell you for sure that at my high school no one ever applauded when the most popular girl in school walked into the classroom like she’s Kramer making an entrance on Seinfeld.
Why is Brad taking her to an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere? And why is she wearing heels?
Oh god she took the heels off and now she’s barefoot in this decrepit house, that’s so much worse! TETANUS EXISTS LOUISE.
Wait are they going to fuck in the abandoned house? Brad has a girlfriend! You brought heels, but did you bring condoms?? I guess she has bigger concerns than tetanus now. Also I feel so bad for these actors, they are both DRIPPING sweat. That must have been a miserable shoot.
I’ve said this before, but the 80s were such an incredible time for himbo fashion. Crop tops, those tank tops with the giant holes for the arms, teeny little basketball shorts. In the 90s all we had were JNCOs and weirdly “urbanized” Looney Tunes characters on baggy t-shirts. Gen X has no idea how good they had it re: male fashion.
I’m genuinely obsessed with the idea that popularity means the school just has banners all over that say “LOUISE” and she gets like, cards and fan mail that say “Louise U R the best.” This feels like if you ask a kindergartner what being popular means.
Madame Serena just said “the real magic is believing in yourself” which is exactly what Louise’s dad said like 15 minutes ago, but I guess he wasn’t a 3-foot-tall witch so no one paid attention when he said it.
Y’know for an 80s prom outfit, Louise’s dress is pretty cute.
I cannot stress enough that Brad’s girlfriend is at this dance while he and Louise are kissing! Does no one care? Were high school attitudes toward monogamy just way more flexible in the 80s?
Did I Cry? Shyeah, right.
This is such an odd, mostly charming, but wildly perplexing little movie. There was no antagonist or real conflict here, at all. Louise barely struggles with any sort of tension or remorse about having her powers and what it means for her life, she just kind of decides at the end that she’s over it, and she still gets the guy and no actual negative consequences from bending the entire school to her will for the past few months. I mean, in The Craft, when people use magic for their own gains, other people fucking DIE. I was definitely entertained, but a lot of it was due to me saying, “What? How? What?” loudly at the screen. I can see how this has gained a cult following in much the same way that other oddball 80s fare like Better Off Dead or Girls Just Wanna Have Fun did. Watch it once, then watch it again while you get drunk with your friends (in a post-Covid world, obviously) and you’ll probably have a pretty great time.

September/October stories and struggels
Happy spooky season everyone!!! It’s been a while since we last talked, school has be crazy and I feel like I am going more insane as the days pass but I finally found a little free time to chatch up with you. Considering that I had so little time those past weeks, I watched quite a few movies, most of them movies I wanted to watch since forever and I’m really happy I finaly got to see them plus I’m even more exited to discuss them!
So starting with the movie I watched back at the beginning of september. I hate it when I don’t get to write those discussions right after I finish that certain movie or book because I don’t remember all the details and I hate not remebering all the details but there is nothing we can do about it now, I took notes tho while watching so we have at least some of the details.
Starting of with ‘Chemical Hearts’, I was so super excited to watch this one because I absolutely love Lili Reinhart and I was so so so excited to see her in this movie, besides that, a few years ago I started reading the book this movie is based on and I was even more excited because of that. Lili was absoultely stunning in this movie I love her and I loved her as Grace! I remember feeling so inspired after watching this movie, I wanted to take out my notebook and write, I think the best movies and the best books are those who inspire you those who leave you with louds of ideas, the ones that make you want to do something as inspring, I love that feeling and this movie definitely gave me this feeling, I absolutely loved it. It also had sooo many beautiful phrases full of thruth they bescaly exposed what it’s like to be a teenager and I loved that! I wanted to write down all those wise phrases so so beautiful!! As I said before I loved Grace so much and it was so painfull to see her go trough all those phases but it was also so relatable and the fact that in the end she and Henry didn’t got back together made the whole thing even better because that’s just life you think youre going to be together forever but that’s not how it realy goes and high school it’s just a little portion of youre life and then your paths divide...it’s sad but its very true! I also love (ok I am deffently using the word love way to offten I’m really sorry..) how she said that one time that she is broken and he should’t try to fix her like one of his pots (by the way I loved that thing with breaking the pots and than rebuilding them and the parallel to Grace....ahhhh just perfect😍😍) because he couldn’t fix her, that sentace stayed with me since than, I found it sooo sooo beautiful!!! I highly recomend this movie!
I also finnaly, after such a long time, got to watch ‘Little Women’, I was ultra exited for this movie, I have the book laying around in my bookshelf for a year now and I wanted to read it but as I said earlier the time isn’t with me. And I normaly don’t do this but I diced to watch the movie before reading the book because I was way to exited for, it and guess what I more that enjoyed it, I loved it!!!!!! I can’t wait to read the book even tho of corse I got spoiled for it because I watched the movie first but the book is always better so I’m sure I will still love it!
This movie was as inspiring as Chemical Hearths, Jo inspired me so so much and jet again after whatching this I wanted to grab my notebook and write my own stroy (or better say continue it) I loved Jo, she was my favorite out of all the March sisters even tho I didn’t always agree with all her actions like how she refused to marry Laurie even tho I do get her point on marriage and I also very much agree with her but still I loved Laurie and it made me so so sad to see him suffer! Also I think I’m not the only one who after watching this movie got all obsessed with Timothée Chalamet!!!
But I guess Jo and Laurie are eally better friends than anything more because I really really liked their friendship! I also really liked Amy with her painting and all but oh boy I got so mad at her for stealing Laurie away ahhaah... but than I kind of made my peace with it I have learned to accept it because it must have been hard for her to live in Jo’s shadow and she had a crush on Laurie all her life. Ooooo but when she burned Jo’s papers oh my God I was fuming I was beyond mad I don’t even want to imaging what it must have been like for Jo! Another thing I absolutley loved about this story is that all the sister where so artsy, I love art so much and I found it so beautiful how each sister had her own art, Jo with the writing, Amy with the painting, Beth with the music, Meg with fashion, that was sooo sooo nice and their palys!!!! Ah God my hearth when they were making up all of those theater plays, absolutley lovely! As I mentioned Beth, I’m sure there is more about her in the book because even tho she is important for the story I feelt like there wasn’t much of her and I’m not sure I like her but only because we only saw so little of her. As for Meg I really really wanted to like her more because she likes fashion and everything but I don’t know... her wanting to marry so early and become a house wife... that ruined her a little for me because I have to admit I am with Jo on that one I feel like she could have done so much more in her life than what she got, I am reaching high as Jo, I don’t want such a “boring” life like Meg. Other that that I also really loved the time period they live in and I love how their mother thought them to be nice and so lovely, I love how they have given their Christmas food to that poor family and how they have been taking care of the so so beautiful! Ah but that guy, Friedrich something... I didn’t liked him at all and I don’t like it that Jo chose him in the end but what can one do... I’m really proud of Jo tho, that she didn’t give up and that she made it as writer and I am really looking forward to read the book!
Next we have ‘The Sun is also a Star’ movie, as I mentioned in one of my previous posts ‘The Sun is also a Star’ is one of my favourite books of all time ( by the way I found the notes I took while reading the book and I to this day regret not writing a discussion about it...) so I was very exited to see what they did with the movie and I had very high expectations! I must say I liked it of course it wasn’t as good as the book but it was all right I guess. There were tho some things that bothered me, I am aware that the movie can’t be exactly as the book but still I think those changes they made are kind of crucial and that’s why they bothered me so much. Starting with the fact that they made out of that one day where everything takes place into one day and a half like nooooo just no!!!! They ruined the magic of that one beautiful perfect day, the book starts in the morning and it ends at night with her leaving and not like in the movie the folowing day!!!! The other thing is that they left out that security guard lady, in the book for me that lady had such an important role and I can’t agree with them leaving her out in the movie! And this point also leads us to the ending, it bothered me that they didn’t found each other again in the airpale (with the help of the security guard lady) I cryed so much when I read that part and I don’t agree with how they made them meet again in that coffee shop it’s just not accurate! I know it’s impossible to do everything perfect and I konw I am beeeing nit-picking but still. And not to forget how they changed the thing with the lawyer guy, or better say how they left out that it was his fault that Natasha had to leave, because of his affair with his secretary, I still blame him and I don’t agree with him beeing so innocent in the movie! I know I have criticsed this movie a lot but I did enjoyed whatching it and did like it!
I also watched those new dance movies on Netflix the one with Sofia Carson, ‘Feel the Beat’ I believe it’s called and the other one with Sabrina Carpenter and Liza Koshy, ‘Work it’. I had such a great time watching them they gave me such happy feelings! I have to say tho that I liked ‘Feel the Beat’ more, in my eyes it was better than ‘Work it’ but they were both really good and funny! They made me want to dance again, I feelt really sad that I gave up dancing because I really love dancing and I belive that in an other life I was supposed to be a dancer but you can’t change the past...
Oh my how is it possible that I almost forgot to mention this amazing movie... I also watched Enola Holmes and my God did I have a great time watching it! It had everything I ever wanted, it was funny, it had mystery in it ( I always love myself a good mystery), it took place in London (London is my favourite city ever), there was British accet all over the place, it had action and not to forget Sam Claflin also had a role in it, (I love Sam Calflin)! I also love Millie Bobby Brown and she was once again amazing! It was really really good I highly highly recomend watching it!!! (Not to repeat myself but this was also a very inspiring movie 😂😂)
And because I am already at it and I was more than excited when it came out I want to mention how much I love Shawn Mendes new song ‘Wonder’, that song is such a masterpeace I can’t listen to it enough I am basicly crying every time I hear it, because of how much I love it and how much it toches my hearth! The lyrics ahhhhhh......😍😍😍so so so beautiful I just can’t and don’t get me started on the music video! And when I watched the trailer to his documetary the other day I was screaming and crying at the same time with excitement I can’t wait to watch it!!! And I can’t wait to listen to the new album, December can’t come soon enogh! If all the songs on that album are as good as ‘Wonder’ I think I’m going to pass out!!
Can we also talk about how Ariana Grande is releasing a new album this month??!! Like how unespected and more than welcomed is that! The single is coming out tonight and I can’t wait for it!
Even tho I’m still on my One Direction phase from the summer and I don’t think it will ever go away, I still welcome this new music with all my hearth! ( Yes I am kind of 10 years to late with my obsession with One Direction but I don’t care I love them and they have totaly marekd my summer this year and they got me trough the hard days.) They are my happy place and my go to running songs! I also will forever love and treasure Harry Styles esspecially young Harry Styles like omg my heart😍😍!
And because I started talking about it I have to mention it now because I forgot to do it in my ‘Chain of Gold booktalk’ the song ‘Slow Hands’ by our boy Nail I totally conect it with Matthew Fairchild, I can’t explain why but I do! I tend to do this thing where I conect a certain song with a book character, the one song I am obsessed with at that time I am reading a certain book tends to become the song of one of the characters and every time I listen to that song I think about that character. Like ‘Boyfriend’ by Ariana Grande is in my head Julian Blackthorn’s song and ‘Havana” by Camila Cabello Isabell Lightwood’s. Does that make sens? Probably not and I also got totaly of topic I’m really sorry!
I think I am going to end it here because this post is gotten way to long again. If you made it here thank you so much for readig and I hope to see you in my next never ending post😂😂😂! Have a great day!

Top 10 Albums of 2019
Okay, since there are quite a few albums on this list I’m going to make my reviews a little smaller, which is sad because they’re already small but if anyone wants a detailed review of a whole album, just let me know and I’d be happy to dive deep into the album or song or EP. Anyway, let’s get started since this is practically the same as my Top EPs of 2019, but instead it’s albums, so I don’t have to give a detailed intro.
10. Singular Act II by Sabrina Carpenter
Okay, to start off we have Sabrina Carpenter’s second act of her Singular project and it’s on this list so that means that I enjoyed it, BUT I would have liked more songs like Exhale or even Pushing 20. By that I mean that I would have liked her other songs to have more lyrics and not just repeating the same words over and over again. I guess I just wanted more vulnerable songs from Sabrina but I still love the album. My favourite song is by far Exhale. (Who saw that coming?)
9. Once Upon a Mind by James Blunt
For this one I didn’t even know James Blunt was making new music this year and was surprised when I found out he released Cold and then a whole album. James Blunt’s voice just makes me really happy because it’s super unique and calming, but most of his songs sound the same. That’s fine if your in the mood for it, but I’m not always in the mood for it. I can say though that most of his songs make me want to get up and dance with him and I like how he uses real instruments in his songs and almost always has a guitar playing. My favourite song is probably Monsters followed closely by The Greatest.
8. Was It Even Real? by Olivia O’Brien
Olivia O’Brien is another new artist that I really fell in love with this year. She is really good at writing songs, and her voice is very uniquely hers which I like. She doesn’t try to be something she’s not which really shows and makes her even more special. That being said, I do miss her old songs that did sound a little bit more mainstream and softer, not as sharp as her new songs. This album is also filled with sadness and anger which can get exhausting at a point, but when the album first came out, I couldn’t stop listening to it. My favourite song is the last song that leaves the album on a happier note with Love Myself which is all about trying to accept who you are, which really hit a heartstring and I loved that.
7. YOU by James Arthur
I also wasn’t ready for this album and didn’t even know it came out until months later. I’ve really loved James Arthur’s voice for a while, but I just never really committed to loving him until I heard this album and instantly knew I needed it. I really love both his upbeat songs and his slower songs equally which doesn’t always happen with me. I usually just fall for the slow songs, but that really changed in this album where the first half is more upbeat and the second half is slower, but I love them both so much. His songs are all really well done with the music really complimenting his voice well. Even though I really love his upbeat songs, my favourite song is still a slower one, Quite Miss Home that just gives me shivers every time I listen to it.
6. Romance by Camila Cabello
For this album I’ve already done a song by song review when it first came out in the beginning of December so if your interested in that, it’s under December 2019 song review on my post list. I really love this album and I’m so happy how many happy songs there are because that essentially means that Camila’s happy which makes me happy. I’ve loved Camila Cabello since Fifth Harmony and was obsessed with her first solo album and she really just keeps growing and growing. Honestly she’s my favourite from Fifth Harmony and I was very excited when she left them to pursue her solo career. My favourite song is First Man which made me cry the first couple times I heard it.
5. A Place We Knew by Dean Lewis
I first found out about Dean Lewis when he released Waves and I loved it. Then I kept forgetting about him until his new songs popped up on my YouTube feed. I became really obsessed with Be Alright when it first came out and finally kept him on my radar and was ready when his album dropped. Many of his songs do sound the same, but his songwriting skills are quite good while the songs that do stand out are really out of this world. I love so many of his songs, which is why the albums at number five, but the best one is definitely Half a Man which really is beautiful and vulnerable and raw.
4. Lover by Taylor Swift
This album was the only one that really surprised me this year. All the other albums that I knew were coming out I had high expectations for but not this one. I’m not a Swift fan and really didn’t love her last couple albums and miss her old country youth. But when Lover came out I had to try it out because it’s Taylor Swift, and I was very surprised on how many songs I loved on this album. I thought I would only like at most three or four songs on the album, but I love 90 percent of it. She’s an amazing songwriter which I’ve always known but on this album the songs sound good AND are beautifully written. It’s been a while since I could say that with confidence about Taylor Swift. My favourite song is Cornelia Street which I loved since I first heard it, but I have to also mention Soon You’ll Get Better which made me bawl the first couple times I heard it.
3. World War Joy by The Chainsmokers
When Closer was released and took the world by storm I found both The Chainsmokers and Halsey. I will be forever grateful for that, since now Halsey is my second favourite artist of all time, and The Chainsmokers are in my top ten. When The Chainsmokers released their album Memories… Do Not Open, I fell in love with them. I was not disappointed with this album. They are amazing creators and they are just getting better. Every song on this album is good and most of them are great. My favourite is Kills You Slowly which is one of only two songs that they don’t have a feature, which are usually my favourite by them.
2. The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change by Nina Nesbitt
I found out about Nina Nesbitt on YouTube through her music videos for both The Moments I’m Missing and The Best You Had. I loved the songs but didn’t buy them on iTunes because I was still unsure about her. That was two years ago, and I kept her on my radar. I’m glad I did. When she started to release more singles from her upcoming album, I was impressed. And then her album dropped and I listened to her story. Now her album is my second favourite of the year. She’s an amazing songwriter and singer and with everything she's been through in the music industry, she came back stronger than ever. The whole concept of the album is about always looking forward and knowing that things will get better when it doesn’t feel that way. I can’t even say for sure which one song is my favourite from the album so I’ll name a few: Empire, Is It Really Me Your Missing, Last December, Things I Say When You Sleep, The Moments I’m Missing, The Best You Had, and The Sun Will Come Up, The Seasons Will Change.
1. No.6 Collaborations Project by Ed Sheeran
Now this isn’t a surprise. Anything Ed Sheeran does, I’ll love. This project is no exception. I love how Ed Sheeran just does things he wants to and doesn’t care about fitting into the norm. His songwriting is purely him and the impact he’s had on the music industry is important. He doesn’t worry about what people think about him which is a hard thing to do. I love so many songs on this album including Beautiful People, Best Part of Me, Antisocial, Put It All On Me, and Way To Break My Heart. Ed Sheeran is my favourite artist and songwriter ever and I don’t think that will ever change.
That concludes my favourite albums of 2019.
Until next time!

My Favorite Songs of 2018 by Genre
There was a LOT of music this year that I still wanted to talk about but didn’t get put on the other posts I made, so I decided to put yet ANOTHER list together. (Read my top albums and EPs of the year lists if you want some context.) Buckle up, because it’s going to be a long one, folks. Here are the rules for eligibility:
The songs on this list most likely a) weren’t on an album that I loved in its entirety/didn’t feel that strongly about, b) were on an album that I didn’t have time to listen to, or c) were released as singles.
No songs from the albums or EPs I’ve previously mentioned are eligible.
I’ll try my best not to include singles that are for albums coming out next year (for example, I’m not putting Light On by Maggie Rogers or Party For One by Carly Rae Jepsen on the list.) Those songs will be eligible if I do a list next year. If I accidentally do put an album single on the list, it’s because I didn’t know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Now, presented in no particular order, let’s get to some tunes.
POP
Used to You by Dagny: If you’ve been with me for a while, you know that I’m obsessed with Norwegian pop star Dagny, who I learned about through a recommendation from a friend. This song is one of her best: uptempo but melancholy, with honest, vulnerable lyrics about a strained relationship.
Crush by Tessa Violet: On the complete opposite end of the spectrum, we’ve got a bubbly sugar-pop song about having a crush on someone. It’s quite simple as to why I love this song: it’s just so joyfully adorable.
Sweet but Psycho by Ava Max: Okay, why is this not a hit the U.S.? It’s already gotten to number one in Norway, Finland, and Sweden, and is making a splash in the U.K. While I’m iffy on the lyrics, this song has one of the catchiest hooks of the year. It’s a giant guilty pleasure of mine.
Sucker Punch by Sigrid: This was named the eighth best song of the year by Time magazine and it’s easy to see why. It has all the elements that make up a Sigrid song (catchy melody, her signature raspy vocals,) but has just enough quirky touches and eccentric details to it that set it apart from the rest of her discography.
Do Right by Glades: Glades are so underrated, and I’ve mentioned them in a bunch of posts before. This song is them at their best, with one of the stickiest choruses of the year and a sweet synth riff.
Batshit by Sofi Tukker: I first heard this song in an iPhone commercial, oddly enough. I’m not going to say that this song is good, because I’m fairly sure that it isn’t good. The chorus is literally the word “batshit” said over and over and over again. But somehow, it’s perfect? It’s simple while at the same time having so many cool elements that it’s never boring. The funky bass riff, lowered vocals, electronic drop are all so infectious. Sofi Tukker are my guilty pleasure band, so check them out if you’re into strange dance club music.
Chasers by Bahari: This pulsating, electronic groove from California based trio (now duo :/) Bahari is like a dangerous lullaby. The twinkling production and harmonies keep the tone tense but enjoyable. I hope they release more music soon.
Cause You Did by Willa: Willa exploded onto my radar with her powerful, ass kicking anthem Swan, which she released back in 2016. I was so excited to see that she had released new music. This song is a bit different from her previous work, swerving more into the pop lane, but is still charming as hell. (Fun fact, she was in an episode of Supernatural. 10.13 Halt and Catch Fire. The more you know, am I right?)
San Francisco by Fickle Friends: This is my favorite song off of the Broken Sleep EP (I think it’s an EP? It’s only three songs... Check it out regardless.) Fickle Friends’s sound is so summery and tropical, it never fails to put me in a good mood, and this song is a perfect example of that.
F**k U by Kailee Morgue: A whole tell off anthem. Like her other material, this song balances darker material with a sweet and innocent sounding vocal delivery. Just make sure you listen to the uncensored version. Listening to the clean version is like listening to the radio edit of IDGAF by Dua Lipa or “Forget” You by CeeLo Green. It has no bite to it without the title word being said.
Emotion by Astrid S: When I first heard Such a Boy, I knew that Astrid S had the potential to be a pop starlet in the vein of Zara Larsson. This song is a lot of fun, with a whistling hook and Astrid S’s usual sassy delivery.
Cherry by Rina Sawayama: This is a whole BOP, from the whispery intro to the rushing production to the melodic, get-stuck-in-your-head chorus. This song is much like its title suggests: bright and sweet with just enough of a twang to keep it interesting, just like a cherry.
Baby Don’t Talk by LÉON: Of the two singles she released this year, I can’t help but like this one a little bit more (but don’t get me wrong, Falling is a whole bop and a half.) This song is just so likable, from the snappy percussion to the “ooOOooOOhs,” to the unforgettable melody. LÉON is so underrated, I can’t encourage you enough to listen through her three EPs and other singles. They’re all gold.
Daughter by L Devine: I can’t tell you how shook I was when I first heard this song. It’s L Devine at her finest, with a catchy melody, relatable lyrics, and just the right amount of electronic elements. This song is the wlw bop that no one’s talking about that everyone should be talking about.
Carousel by Skylar Spence: I found this gem thanks to Spotify’s Indie Pop playlist. The pulse to this song always makes me want to tap my toes. It’s like if the color yellow was a song. The lyrics are super cute, and the glitchy, robotic chorus just works somehow.
R.E.M. by Ariana Grande: While I found Sweetener as an album a bit uneven in quality, it’s still by Ariana fucking Grande. She could sing What’s The Fox Say and it would sound beautiful. This track is my personal favorite, with the cute little “bum bum bums” and the all around dreamy atmosphere. There’s also a funny amount of self awareness in this song, with the whole “’Excuse me, um, I love you,’” and “does this end?” It adds a layer of charm and personality that elevate this song. Ariana Grande is definitely the pop idol we need in the hot 100 right now, dear Lorde.
Sue Me by Sabrina Carpenter: What a fricking BANGER! This song rocked me to my core. Sabrina Carpenter is one of the best singers to come out of the Disney machine, and she’s always had potential for greatness (remember Thumbs? That song slaps.) There’s something visceral and inexplicably powerful about this song, I feel it right in my gut. It’s my favorite off of Singular Act 1, @eleanorschidis thank you for convincing me to listen through the album.
Love The Lie by Call Me Loop: I don’t feel like I can communicate why I’m so obsessed with this song, but I’ll try. It’s catchy as fuck, the twinkling guitar riff, the beat and melody... it’s all just so perfect. You know what? I can’t do it justice. Just listen to it.
Drink About by Seeb ft. Dagny: This might be my favorite pop song of the year, and I both do and don’t know why. On one hand, the lyrics are repetitive, it’s simplistic, and it’s just another club dance song. But on the other hand, there’s something about it that elevates it beyond that. First off, there’s Dagny, who I’ve said before I LOVE, and her performance brings so much emotion and pain and personality to the song. Then there’s Seeb’s production, managing to make an unforgettable drop and chorus out of only a handful of lines. There was a period of time where I would just listen to this song on repeat, and it never got old or tired despite its repetition. It’s like a rush of euphoria whenever I hear it, and I can’t recommend it enough.
R&B/HIP HOP
Honey Dew by LION BABE: Like Say Lou Lou, I first learned about LION BABE by reading about them in Teen Vogue. I put off checking them out for a while, and when I finally did, I wasn’t disappointed. This songs is one of the chillest I’ve heard this year. Jillian Hervey’s smooth voice and the twinkling pianos and shuffling percussion of Lucas Goodman’s production just meld so perfectly together.
After the Storm by Kali Uchis ft. Tyler, The Creator and Bootsy Collins: There’s something about Kali Uchis’s voice that is so unique and so sultry, I can’t help but get sucked into her music. This song mixes together her lovely crooning, a rap verse from Tyler, The Creator, bubbly production, and uplifting lyrics, and I can’t help but feel happy whenever I hear it. This song feels like emerging from a cold lake, it’s that refreshing. (Also, count In My Dreams as an honorable mention, that song is great too.)
The Kids Are Alright by Chloe x Halle: The song is awe-inspiring, from the powerful harmonies of the opening to the rhythmic switch-ups present all throughout the song. I love the “we are we are we are” mantra that repeats all throughout the song. It almost sounds like a poem put to music.
Blue Lights by Jorja Smith: Mixing a spoken word style hip hop and reggae elements into her usual graceful sound, Jorja Smith manages to craft a pretty sounding R&B song with a meaningful message behind it. Her debut album Lost & Found isn’t what I usually listen to, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Also, can Jorja Smith drop her skincare routine? How does she get it so dewy and smooth? She’s so hecking pretty, I can’t even.
Honey by Raveena: YouTube played this song as a commercial before a video I was watching, and I fell in love with it. Raveena’s voice is so delicate, fragile even, and just lovely paired with the simple but glistening production.
Summer Pack by Childish Gambino: Okay, I’m putting both songs on here. My only explanation for this EP is that Donald Glover took the entire season of Summer and managed to distill it into two R&B songs. Summertime Magic has a watery, tropical mood that’s always refreshing to hear (am I the only one that is reminded of Wii Sports Resort?) and Feels Like Summer makes me feel like I’m sitting on my front steps in the middle of August with a melting orange popsicle.
ALTERNATIVE/INDIE/ROCK
Baby by Bishop Briggs: While more pop leaning than her usual content, the blatant sexuality, personal lyrics, and Bishop Briggs’s usual powerful vocals sell this song. Also, the music video is AMAZING. I’ve put it on my animated music videos that give me life series, but I can’t reiterate enough how great the animation is. Holy hell.
Gold Rush by Death Cab for Cutie: This song is downright ethereal. It sounds like it’s lulling you to sleep, but in the best kind of way. It isn’t boring, it’s soothing. Hearing this song on the radio is what got me into this band, and while I haven’t heard their entire discography, I know that this song will remain one of my favorites.
Hand It Over by MGMT: Just like Gold Rush, this song is so soothing it’s practically therapeutic. Every time I hear it, I just melt right into my chair. I’d say I’m a casual fan of MGMT, (I haven’t heard their less mainstream albums,) but I really like Oracular Spectacular and Little Dark Age. This is one of my favorite cuts off the latter album.
Idaho by Gorillaz: While The Now Now didn’t leave a big impression on me, this song makes me glad that I decided to listen to it. The production has this swell to it at the chorus, which is just so calming. I really like how the song is dappled with nature sounds, too. It makes me feel like I’m in a cabin next to a lake in the middle of the woods and it’s raining outside but I’m cuddled up in a cozy blanket with a cup of peppermint tea.
Baby You’re A Haunted House by Gerard Way: I’ve never listened to My Chemical Romance, so I didn’t know what to expect from this song, but holy crap. It’s a total banger. The guitars on this track are so fuzzy and aggressive in all the right ways. This was what I had on repeat all throughout Halloween.
Blood and Bones by TRACE: The only word I can use to describe the song is entrancing. TRACE’s smooth vocals and the laid back production always make me feel so relaxed, and the funkier electronic touches and glittery piano riffs add just enough to keep it all interesting.
Nobody by Mitski: I told y’all I be mentioning Mitski on one of these lists! While the entirety of Be The Cowboy was lovely, Nobody stands out as one of the catchiest, strangest, and most depressing songs of the year. How can a song about crushing, isolating loneliness that literally has a lyric about the hypothetical aliens living on Venus bop to the gods? I have no clue, but Mistki pulled it off.
Fruity by Rubblebucket: Speaking of weird lyrics, this one takes the cake: “I said I’d make it to the party / But I’ve got a lot going on / The lioness gave a feast for forty off her body / Then slept on the ground till a flower grew out.” I have no clue what the hell that's supposed to mean, but it works. The little “lalala”s and the whispered vocals make for an interesting listen. Thanks, Spotify’s Discover Weekly!
Pristine by Snail Mail: The brain child of nineteen year old Lindsey Jordan, Snail Mail is one of the most intriguing indie rock acts I’ve heard this year. Her debut album, Lush, is full of awesome songs, but Pristine has got to be my favorite. The lyrics about the monotony of party culture, accompanied by an upbeat guitar riff and communicated through her raw vocals, all come together to form a song that you can both headbang and relax to.
She’s Kerosene by The Interrupters: I don’t listen to ska punk, but this song is a just a ton of fun. There’s a sweet saxophone solo, and holy crap does Aimee Allen have a ton of personality on the vocals. Even my dad liked this song.
Body Talks by The Struts ft. Kesha: AND I MEAN THE KESHA VERSION. The original is fine, but when you’ve got a version of a song with Kesha on it, do you really need to hear the other one? This song has such an explosive and rocking chorus and Luke Spiller of The Struts and Kesha have great chemistry. I hope Kesha ventures more into the rock genre in the future, because she, well, rocks at it.
Midnight by Black Honey: A grimy banger complete with bold vocals, a chorus that will get. stuck. in your. head, assertive guitars, and a kick ass synthesizer solo? Yes, please. I loved Midnight from the first time I heard it. I might have mentioned before that I heard of this song through YouTube recommendations, and I’m so happy to have come across this song and this band.
Lavender Bones by Stand Atlantic: As I mentioned in my artist recommendation post, this song is the update to Misery Business by Paramore that I never knew I needed. It’s noisy, it’s angry, it’s so goddamn catchy. I’m not always into the whole punk sound, but this song surpasses its genre. It’s just so good.
Shame by Elle King: Since hearing Ex’s and Oh’s back in 2015, I’ve been obsessed with Elle King’s debut, Love Stuff. It’s one of those albums that I can put on and listen to all the way through. Her follow up, Shake The Spirit, was also pretty good, showcasing her gritty, powerful voice intertwined with rock, blues, and country elements. This song is the standout, explosive, boot stomping, and a whole lot of fun.
Uh Huh by Jade Bird: This song is the epitome of a headbanger. It was a tossup between this song and her other singles, Love Has All Been Done Before and Lottery, for this list, but this one just had to be on it. This is one of my most listened to rock songs of the year. The energetic guitar gives the song an electric pulse, and Jade Bird’s vocals... holy shit does she have pipes. Her voice reminds me of Alanis Morissette. This song sprints at full speed, as over as quickly as it started, and a hell of a rush too.
Fireworks by First Aid Kit: I’m not a big fan of country/folk music, but this Swedish sister duo have surpassed my usual genre bias time and time again. This song is my favorite off of their album Ruins, (they dropped the EP Tender Offerings this year, too. It’s a lovely little slice of folk that I’d definitely recommend y’all check out.) This is a grand, soaring ballad, showcasing the sisters’ harmonization and a showstopping string instrument. Just gorgeous.
Reasons Not To Die (Demo) by Ryn Weaver: Ryn Weaver was one of the first artists I listened to when I was first defining my taste in music. Her album The Fool is what got me into the indie pop and alternative genres. While hopeful that she’d drop more music, I was also pretty sure that it wasn’t going to happen for a long, long while because she doesn’t currently have a label. Then this song came along. Everything about it is beautiful: Ryn’s vibrato-rich voice, the melody, the lyrics, guys. This song’s lyrics are so personal and authentic. As the song continues, it builds up to this crescendo, and Ryn’s voice gets more powerful and yet more vulnerable at the same time, the music swells... and then it drops back down again. This song makes me teary whenever I hear it, and that doesn’t happen that often. Please, Ryn. Drop more music. Lorde knows we need voices like yours in the current music scene.
Listen to the complete mix of all these songs HERE. What were your favorite songs of 2018? Any artists, albums, singles, etc. I should know about? Leave your thoughts and recommendations down below.

01. what’s your name/alias you go by ??
it’s not my real name but i go by cody online, usually.
02. what’s your age ??
nineteen, almost twenty. i feel 12 tho
03. what’s your zodiac sign ??
aries! i added the exclamation point bc we’re supposed to be assertive but i didn’t get the memo.
04. what’s your ethnicity ??
umm what ISN’T my ethnicity is a better question haha. but no i’m mostly italian/sicilian, lots of different other european countries too, and also part native american, but sadly the only person that even knew what tribe was my grandmother who never really shared those details with anyone before her passing.
05. what’s your nationality ??
i am a US citizen :)
06. what’s your favorite band and/or musical artist ??
i can never answer this because i like pretty much every genre of music and my “favorite” is constantly in flux but right now i’ve been listening to a lot of greta van fleet, eminem, harry styles, joyner lucas, tenacious d, and also one specific willie nelson song has been on a constant loop when i’m not listening to the other stuff.
07. what’s your dream job ??
i don’t really have one tbh. lots of people do and that’s awesome, but sometimes people don’t believe me when i say the only thing that matters is that i don’t hate the job and it earns me enough money to live comfortably, maybe own a small house, reasonably priced car, etc.
08. what’s one place you would love to visit ??
alpha centauri
09. what’s your favorite tv show ??
another one of those things where i can’t pick a favorite. i’ve been enjoying arrow, riverdale, titans, the ranch, sabrina, supergirl, the flash, legacies, and legends of tomorrow lately though. i’m also a big fan of general hospital, the 100, izombie, lucifer, and stranger things.
10. what’s your favorite movie ??
um... tough one but i have always had a soft spot for Joe Dirt, or The New Guy. Also, I really liked Why Him with James Franco, Bryan Cranston, and Zoey Deutch. I mean, not the greatest movies ever but they’re what come to mind when asked, so... lol
11. what’s your favorite song ??
as of the past couple weeks? “cruel cruel world” by willie nelson, or “unshaken” by d’angelo. for weeks before that it was “lucky you” by eminem & joyner lucas. but i really, unironically love “only in america” by riff raff. the video is hilarious and it just puts me in a good mood.
12. what’s your favorite sport ??
is watching tv a sport? haha video games is a sport, right...?
13. what’s your favorite food ??
pizza. or cereal. i have difficulty picking favorites if you couldn’t tell.
14. what’s your favorite face claim to use ??
chris wood or paul wesley, usually. i’ve just used them a lot and gotten used to them. i tried to justify chris wood for john but he’s way too buff to be john and his skinny gifs don’t look nearly enough like john to make any sense.
15. what’s your least favorite face claim ??
andy ballsack biersack. emma roberts. those two bring up bad memories. dylan o’brien. idk why, i like him well enough as an actor. i’m not necessarily opposed to rping with any of them though
16. what’s your favorite canon character to play ??
i played kai parker for a while. that was fun.
17. what’s your sexuality ??
heterosexual. i legitimately cannot remember a time i wasn’t into girls. as a toddler i’d play with barbies to take the clothes off lmfao
18. what’s the last movie you saw in a cinema/theater ??
batman v superman i think. it’s been way too long.
19. what’s the worst injury you’ve ever had ??
i’ve had some bad ones. i broke my wrist/hand in a few different places, which wasn’t too bad. had a sprained/fractured ankle which didn’t heal for like a year. but the worst was when i got assassin’s creed brotherhood as a kid and laid on my stomach across the whole couch, propped up on my elbows for like 7 hours straight. my back was in a u shape the whole time and when i finally moved, that was the moment i realized i fucked up lol
20. what’s a random or interesting fact about you ??
um.... idk i’m boring but maybe that i have lost 120lbs
21. do you listen to music while you write ??
sometimes. if i find a good playlist (i’m too lazy to make one) that’s not too distracting then sometimes i’ll use it for a while but other times i just like the silence.
22. are you a morning, day, evening, or night writer ??
night. no matter how hard i try my sleep schedule always gets turned upside down eventually to where i get up at like 6 pm and go to sleep at like 10 am, so i usually only write while the skies are dark lol
23. have you ever roleplayed intoxicated ??
nope. i’ve never had a drink or done drugs so that’d be a neat trick. lol
24. what language or languages do you speak ??
only english. i’m probably too dumb to learn another language tbh. though for a while after playing assassin’s creed 2 i’d say random italian sentences and call people “stronzo!”
25. how long have you roleplayed ??
i mean technically i’ve been rping since i was 8 on myspace, but i didn’t move on to legit rp until i was like 11 or 12, then i went to rp.me for a while, then finally got to tumblr around 2012-2013.
26. favorite roleplay genre ??
i don’t really have one, but i was once in a scifi rp that changed my view on what groups can be, and i think it was my favorite experience ever. everyone was so close and friendly and that made the rp even more fun, so now a good scifi rp brings up those memories for me and makes me enjoy that genre even more.
27. one sound you hate & one you love ??
ok so the sound i hate is nails scratching cotton. not a chalkboard, oddly enough that’s tolerable to me, but nails scratching up against cotton... i have no idea why but it sends chills down my spine lmfao
i love the sound of a crackling fire though. or rain. or rain and a crackling fire.
28. do you believe in ghosts ??
hell yes i do. pls don’t hurt me ghosts i believe in u
29. do you believe in aliens ??
do i think aliens exist? yes. do i think we’ve been visited by aliens, or that we’re even close enough for them to know we exist? not necessarily. but i do like the ancient alien theory that we were visited by aliens a long time ago and taught stuff. especially when you consider that so many cultures, even those that had no way of being in contact with each other are so similar, have similar thought processes, and progressed at similar rates.
30. do you believe in true love ??
yes & no. i believe that initial attractions can be very powerful in producing a “love at first sight” feeling, but no one is just meant to love another person. i believe you can grow to feel “true love” for anyone assuming the right circumstances.
31. do you hold grudges ??
i’d like to think i don’t but i know i do, at least in the back of my mind. sort of forgive but not forget, but also never 100% forgiving either? idk.
32. do you have any obsessions right now ??
red dead redemption 2. big shock, i know haha. i just can’t get over the ending, the characters, the music, the world, etc.
33. do you drive & if so, have you ever been in a crash ??
nope & nope
34. do you like the smell of gasoline ??
nooooo it makes me feel sick, honestly.
35. do you prefer writing fluff, angst, or smut ??
all of the above! each has its merits, and writing too much of one thing can get old and make the others feel more appealing. smut gets old the quickest though imo, even though i’ve run a smut rp in the past haha
36. are you in a relationship ??
are you? lmao
37. grab the nearest book to you and turn to page 23, what is the 17the line ??
well it’s a comic/graphic novel so there’s not 17 lines on that page but the second to last line is “and edward nigma... did you know that when the riddler was first transferred to arkham, they had to keep moving him from cell to cell to keep him from being able to formulate an escape?” it’s Batman Volume 10: Epilogue by Snyder & Capullo.
38. put your playlist on shuffle and list the first four songs that pop up:
1. Santeria by Sublime 2. Money Trees by Kendrick Lamar 3. Heart Shaped Box by Nirvana 4. Ladders by Mac Miller

Interview with Kyd the Band
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kyd the Band over Zoom video!
Alt-pop act Kyd the Band (aka Devin Guisande) pays homage to his hometown of Loomis, Sacramento and all the things that grounded him in the official video for “Roots” out now via Sony Music.
Featured on the latest Season 3: The Realization EP, “Roots” is an unapologetic track underlining the internal struggles of faith, identity, and self-acceptance. The companion video (directed by Garret Hayes) unlocks yet another episode for listeners in the series and offers further insight on Kyd the Band’s incredible journey. From being a pastor’s son in the Pentecostal Church to prospective professional baseball player to singer-songwriter who has toured with and worked with the likes of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, gnash, NF, Lennon Stella, ROZES, among others, Kyd the Band asserts “Nobody's gonna dig my roots up… And as seasons change, they still won't break me down...”
The visual gives an intimate glimpse into Kyd the Band’s childhood and previously undocumented origin story. As Devin walks through his hometown, he stands firm in front of buildings that are close to his heart - his childhood home that his family lost in the 2008 economic crash, his baseball field, his local church - and confidently chants “My feet are buried in the ground, they'll be like that long as I'm around.” Speaking on these key locations and influences, Devin divulges “I became obsessed with the drums at around one or two. That turned into me playing drums in my church at ten. My first real passion was baseball though. That’s what I wanted to do for a career.” He continues, “When that path was removed from my life, I turned to music and realized I could be just as passionate about it.”
With unabashed honesty in his lyrics and broad range across his collection, pulling from his early gospel influences and incorporating alt-rock, R&B, and pop elements, the up-and-comer illuminates his vulnerability, self-reflection, and ultimate realization. On the latest EP, he says, “‘Season 3: The Realization’ is me taking everything else before this and making sense of it. The Intro was my childhood and upbringing, Character Development was going out on my own and the start of me trying to become me, The Realization is now.”
This new season kicks off with upbeat pop-rock single “Corridors.” The song - co-written with Adam Friedman (Allen Stone, Mike Posner) and Kevin Griffin (The Night Game, Moon Taxi) - invites you on a trip into his mind, painting a vivid picture of his ever-evolving self and ongoing struggles. “It’s like a prison in my head, some days I can’t get out of bed...” croons Guisande on the all too relatable intro of the track. Instead of remaining trapped in old memories, Kyd the Band encourages his listeners to keep their head up and positively push forward against the odds. The newly released “Roots” single and video follows “Make It In America” produced by Mark Nilan (Lady Gaga, Zedd) - one of the most personal songs to date in Kyd the Band’s discography, based on when the singer-songwriter was just 16 years old and his family lost everything they owned. Other tracks include groove-heavy “Love Someone Else” co-written with Jimmy Robbins (Dan + Shay, Kelly Clarkson, Sabrina Carpenter), “The Way The World Is” co-written with Christian Medice (The Aces, Dixie D’Amelio), and slow-burner “I’ll Stay” - a touching song on being there for your loved ones when you’re needed most.
With each season, Devin reveals more of himself as he finds the confidence to delve deep into his tumultuous past from a socially isolated childhood, to leaving his home and family; overcoming a drug overdose to then finally finding solace in music and healthy relationships. Likewise, he hopes that by unveiling his experiences, he will forge an open dialogue with his fan base - inspiring his listeners to reflect and grow from past experiences.

Your Fashion Questions, Answered
I took a poll on Instagram last week and requested that you send in all of your questions.
Because there was such a strong response, I decided to break them up into sections starting with the most popular category, Fashion & Style!
Do you still wear your Chanel sunnies you got last year? – Ashley P
No. They were an impulse purchase that I made while in Florence and I regretted it. I actually gave them to my brother to he can wear them for fun this summer.
Top 5 pieces for a summer wardrobe? – Cat
1 A great pair of denim shorts. 2. Oversized sunglasses. 3. A medium sized straw bag. 4. A classic black one-piece swimsuit. 5. Pair of white sandals.
How did you find your style? – Hibi C
That’s a tough question to answer because I feel like my personal style is constantly evolving. After high school when I moved to Chicago I was given the chance to play dress up more {living in a big city}. The seasons gave me a chance to play with layers and really explore different sides to my personality. After I moved to Los Angeles the style here is much more laid back. However I travel {or used to} quite often to New York and Paris for work so it lended me with opportunities to dress up. I think the more chances you have to dress up for different types of occasions the better you get at doing so.
What are your favorite styles of belt bags? Martha D
Do you mean crossbody bags? I don’t really wear belt bags but my favorite cross body bag is the A.P.C. half moon and all of Clare V’s crossbody bags.
Do you prioritize eco-responsible clothes (non-toxic, good salary, local) – Lauren C
I shop a LOT locally and strive to support my friends such as Heidi Merrick, Rachel Comey, Rachel Pally, Clare V., The Optimist, Janessa Leone, Sophie Monet, Sophie Buhai…to name a few. So to answer your question: yes!
Favorite everyday handbag? – The Luces
I absolutely love my Goyard PM tote and carry it almost every day. It’s a great bag to buy used because it’ll get banged up a little bit. For a less expensive option, I also love the Everyday Tote bag by Mansur Gavriel or the Cloud Bag by Baggu.
Can we see your fine jewelry collection? Favorite piece of jewelry? – Quyen P
I don’t love showing it all together. It feels a little braggadocious. My collection includes Cartier Juste un Clou and Love Bracelets, an Hermés watch, Retrouvai jewelry and Tiffany & Co. pieces to name a few.
How do you keep your tees so white? – @bexhunt1
I’m not sure but I do wash ALL of my whites together using Laundress. I love, love the smell of Laundress.
Do you take your love bracelet off? Is it hard? – Maddie B
Very rarely. I recently took my bigger one off as we entered quarantine because I wanted to wear minimal accessories while at home. It isn’t hard to take off at all.
Can we see your engagement ring? – Anne R
Sure! If you google it I think more images will come up. It’s a modified radiant cut, 3.25 carats.
Do you like your small Cartier Love better than original? Reason you’re wearing one less? – Keesha G
I’m only wearing it less because I’m home and it felt weird to be wearing two bracelets all the time. I’ll put it back one once I go back out into the wild
But to answer your question, lately I’ve been liking my smaller one because I’ve been feeling rather minimal lately.
How often do you do closet clean outs? – Sarah
Once a month.
New favorite clothing finds? – Lauren B
I’ve been loving finding secret pieces on Amazon. I’m doing a year-long partnership with them soon so I’ve been geeking out to finding super affordable pieces. It’s like a fun game for me!
How do you style outfits for spring? – Stephanie V
I’m all about layers and never leave the house without a light jacket. Lately I’ve been loving lots of neutrals and don’t worry about them being too matchy. I also lean in to accessories more during the spring, such as hats, jewelry and scarves.
Favorite affordable online shops? – Desi G
Obsessed with Everlane lately!
Any ideas for re-entry looks? – Janelle I
For me I’m going to wear less make-up and stick to minimal styles and neutral colors.
How to elevate basics for work? – Lisa L
I think that any outfit can be easily elevated with a great slingback heel. You can also pull your hair back in a low bun and add a headband to elevate the look.
Tricks for save/splurge style? – Lisa L
Splurge on bags and accessories such as a classic black headband and good jewelry. Splurge on classic pieces like the Hermès Oran Sandals or a Chanel quilted handbag. Save on jeans, tops and sunglasses.
Trend you can’t get behind? – Christine
Just one? (ha!). I can’t get behind the puffy Bottega Veneta sandals or the netted cage sandals. I can’t get behind biker shorts and crop tops.
How has your style changed to accommodate mom life? – Penny
My pajamas are less cute because I get messy during dinner time and soaked during bath time. Really just my “stay at home” style is different. I still love getting dressed when I can go out.
How long did it take for your Amazon straw bag to arrive? (backorder situation) Christine E
Damn! Mine took about a week.
Have you always had an eye for fashion and design or is a skill you have honed? – Joni
I’m not 100% sure but I do know that I’ve always enjoyed playing dress up and my mom and I used to take a lot of shopping trips growing up.
Summer tank/shirt dresses to wear with sneakers/sandals? – Narz T
Love this dress by Lacausa. It’s been in my closet for a very long time and I always bring it out during summer.
Robe suggestions? – Nina M
100% Lunya “The Robe”
Affordable fashion picks for transitioning back into seeing people? – Sabrina M
I’d check out my clothing favorites from my Amazon shop because I’m constantly adding affordable pieces that I love.
Classic, everyday pieces for work? – Grace M
Black trousers, a slingback heel and a crisp white button up shirt.
How do you know when something is out of style? – Marija P
If you are dressing in classic pieces that feel timeless then you will never be out of style.
Hat box suggestion? – Melissa D
I’m on the hunt! Steamline makes some great hat box luggage pieces.
What are the items I should invest in at goal weight? – Niamh C
Congrats! I would invest in a pretty black silk dress.
Next big wishlist purchase? – Noelline B
A piece of Retrouvai jewelry from her Lollipop collection.
10 best shoes? – Noelline B
Hermes Oran Flats, Gianvitto Rossi Portofino 70’s, Soludos Beach Slides, Mansur Gavriel Slingbacks in White and Black, Jenni Kayne House Slippers, Chanel Ballerina Flats, Tkees, New Balance Sneakers, Tory Burch Bubble Sneaker and a pair of Hunter Boots.
10 best bags? – Noelline B
Chanel Quilted Black Classic, Bottega Veneta Quilted Pouch, anything Mansur Gavriel, Goyard PM in black, Dior Saddle Bag, Cult Gaia, Staud, Tory Burch, Clare V. and Loewe.
I feel like I reached a certain age and lost my style – any tips for re-finding it? – Wendy W
Oh no! Have you tried hanging out with people who are younger than you are? Try listening to different music, watch a new show or read an inspiring book. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone a little bit and maybe buy something you normally wouldn’t buy.
Where are your sunglasses/eyeglasses from? – Melissa W
My eye glasses are very, very old and from LA Eyeworks. My sunglasses are Amazon.
Jewelry organization tips? – Erin T
I would check this video out. I use inserts in my drawers to keep everything organized.
Favorite white tee? – Jennifer J
Currently it’s this one by James Perse.
Best workout clothes for postpartum mom? – Stephanie
I love Beyond Yoga pants because they have stretch. I’d wear an oversized tee with them.
Do you have a bag you love that seems to go with every outfit? – Devon
Yes! Any of the Dior prints like this one OR the Tory Burch Lee bags.
How do you decide what to get rid of? – Kristin
If I haven’t worn something in over a month it gets moved to the further left side of the rack. I then make myself wear it within a month or I get rid of it (unless it’s something sentimental or occasional like a black silk dress).
What’s the story about your Chanel ring that Grant got you? – Julie
Ha! I’ll share it in my book (coming soon!).
Easy wardrobe style tips? – Tracy M
Keep things sweet and simple. I would “favorite” or take screen grabs of favorite outfits you come across online. I save all of my outfit inspiration images into a folder on my phone so that when I go to get dressed I try to put together an outfit that’s similar.
Favorite high and low designers right now? – Nadia D
High – Asceno // Low – Amazon
Best investment white sandal? – Tiffany
Hermes Oran Sandal for sure but there’s a great knockoff on Amazon. I also really love these Tkees.
If you were an award circuit celeb, which designer would be your dream gown partnership? – Shannon
Maria Grazia Chiuri
Favorite running shoes? – Amanda
Nike
Favorite affordable denim shorts? – Inessa
Everlane!
Affordable summer dresses? – @cmoggs
Faithfull The Brand
How do you organize closet? – Veroushka
I put everything into categories {t-shirts, dresses, blazers, dressy tops} and then organize by color.

[01/12/18, Friday]
its day 11 it started out rocky again due alarm problems. what the hell! it's been ringing at 850! im supposed to be out the door by 850 or sooner but 850 is definitely the latest i can leave the house that i could speed into work. but mom needed me to come home anyway (yeah i work for my mom. its good work and i take it seriously and anyone who wants to look down on me for it can suck it; i'm doing the best i can right now with all the coliding mental stuff. i'll talk about later on in this entry) John left some of his notes on a certain issue one of our clients is having at the house and i picked them up. kind of lucky there. we loligagged a little. i took out our new pet bunny. she's surprisingly very cuddly for a bunny. i have no prior bunny experiences mind you but still. not what i expected from a large rodent. or any rodent or smaller than a cat like animal. my gliders are certainly not that well behaved though i don't expect it either, energetic and lithe creatures that they are. still she is more endearing than i anticipated. i still am not very fond of rabbits but this one is okay. we chatted for a minute about my baby sister's room. and i was off with the notes and to grab john some water and get gas (not in that order). fridays are my favorite because its a slow day and people generally dont bother me much.
the last bits of yesterday where kind of exhausting and i find myself really challenged by the excuitive function disorder i have. i kept thinking about where i want to put this or that and thought to myself, just do it! but ultimately didn't. i rewarded myself too early. to my credit, i was exhausted. but still. today i will try to work first THEN reward myself. it is a habit of mine and it enables my EFD (excuitive function disorder). so basicly i just played a lot of video games yesterday.
i just feel jittery and unfocused for right now. hopefully it will change.
the house is a mess of laundry. i am sensing a much needed "20 minutes of cleaning" (read: 120 minutes of cleaning) from mom which is a chance for attitude from everyone. not excited. so when i get home, i'll definitly clean first. i think i'll start with tiding up the dinning room because that's really how you can tell if the house is in dire straits. If the dinning room is messy then it is time for a family cleaning session. i didn't even make the mess. i would agree to cleaning the kitchen or do the laundry but nothing else, but that's not going to fly, really. i should either start in the music room or the dinning room... Probably the dinning because you see it when you walk in and its the most visible eye sore, and then the dinning and move to the kitcheny part the den, the den i'll leave to vannah and mom. savannah's stuff is littered across the floor and even for me, its agrovating to look at. but i have to remind myself that my baby sister is probably worse of than me when it comes to EFD and adhd. there is definitly going to be a fight about that, i can feel it. i hope im wrong though.
mom suggested i log what i end up eating. at the time, i was offended by the suggestion. sounds silly but you have to keep in mind the historical obsession about my weight and food intake my mother has expressed over the years, sense i was small and still very impressionable. i still don't really know what to make of it, all the dietary routine changes i was mad to go though and shamed for. i was 13! 14! 15! I was young and still growing. i was in an important part of my developing as a person and myself worth, and what did i learn? that im too thick. i didn't really think i was at the time, but how can i say no to the person driving me around and im not in charge of my destination? it was wholy unfair... im not really saying that this is the root of all my self-esteam issues but it didn't help. not only did my peers see me as imperfect and flawed, so did my family. its hard to think about. i try to forget. so therefore the suggestion of working out, of listing what i eat or anything else by mom is offensive initially. in hindsight, yeah it a good idea. i just hate to admit it because of the implications.
speaking of my peers, my social/educational/school experience in childhood? fucking. awful. about the time i was in 3rd grade i really started to notice people didn't like me much. i can't remember much else than that. i know i wasn't a popular person in 1st or 2nd grade and i'm not even going to count kindergarden, but 3rd grade is where most of my memory begins. my teacher didn't even like me then. said i was a trouble maker and a bad person. not to me, but she made the mistake of saying that to my mother. why did she say that? because i decided i was going to clean up the class room. she said i was a manipulitive little trouble maker for cleaning her class room. this is were my earliest descriminations against me and my adhd and learning disablities really begins and i remember it. forget about my peers for a moment; my teacher hated me for reasons i didn't even know or understand. i wasn't even that hyperactive like some with adhd, but i did have an issue with attention and being a little disruptive with my best friend. at the time, pokemon was the new wild thing and i was utterly obsessed my friend was too, but that was my doing. instead of paying attention, we were playing. i was just a kid being a kid. when it came to start doing the standardized state testing, no one explicitly stated how important these tests were. i seem to remember someone saying that they were just practice and didn't count towards a grade and i thought oh okay, so its okay to mess up. so much so, i chrismas treed the whole thing. the whole goddamn thing, i just put in random bubbles just because i wanted it done and out of the way of whatever. well. that was the catalyst to a lot of issues i had from then on. without the consent of my mother or any discussion to anyone, they placed me and my friend in a "special ed" class, where you basically just colored stuff and glued stuff together and what not. i was in this class for half of a year before our parents found out and were enraged. upon finding out, they rained hot fiery war upon the school, they tried to cover it by saying how worried they were, that weren't sure i could even read. they didn't do any testing. they didn't ask me or my mother anything. long story short, that's a lot of school i missed. it put me behind in reading for years until i was in 7th grade. from there i struggled because of the things i missed out on because a teacher didn't like the disabled child they were responcible for. i think about that a lot. i think about all the late nights being screamed at because i wasn't doing well and struggled in elementry school things. i remember certain things my mom did that i dont really wish to describe, but while school was a battle sometimes going home was worse. it wasn't always like that, but if mom was in a mood, it went there.
my peers were really no better. a throughout, i was very much picked on because i really liked certain things, and they were my hyperfixations. and i was weird and my teeth were wrong. some of my favorite things ive been called when in elementry school: a cockroach, r-slur, someone said they humped me (they didn't but it was still humiliating), called me useless, made fun of my teeth, made fun of me because i made eye contact with people by saying i had a crush on anyone i looked in the eye (it mortified me as a kid because i definitely did not like any of those assholes, i still struggle with this), i was told that 9/11 was my fault, people tried to cut my hair, people stole from me, spat on me.... it was rough. i'm going to stop talking about it for now.
mom, if you're reading this, then you're probably thinking wow, is this really all i think about? or wow i guess im just a terrible awful mom (or some reverse guilt trippin thing you tend to do to try and make me feel bad for validating myself and addressing what you do that hurts me, even though you're the adult and primarily in control of our relationship) or also wondering why i never talk like this about my father. my father doesn't know me. i am my dad's only child and all he knows about me is that im gay, what i went to college for, and basic likes and dislikes. beyond that, my dad doesn't know me. maybe its the same for my sisters and everyone else but im my dad's only child. i have no competition with him for attention.
i've also have been thinking about myself growing up and my relationship with my sisters. full disclosure: i was not as nice to my sister sabrina as i am today. i was mean. i acknowledge it and think about it all the time. i mean, i was no more a kid myself, but i wasn't nice at all. i didn't even think nicely of her. and worse, i was nicer to savannah than i was her, and im sure that killed her a bit. mom would talk, beg, for me to be nicer. i wasn't like her abusive sister, but it felt like i was taking notes. in part, i blame society and media for what learned about being a sibling. most media i saw and consumed growing up, siblings hated each other, were mean to each other and competed against one another for attention, even in cartoons, that's what i picked up on, and internalized, obviously. my parents obviously didn't do anything to reassure me of that not happening, but i can shoulder some of the responsibility. i have to keep reminding myself, and others that i was just only 8 or 9 or 10 when my sister was born and i already had all these thoughts in my head but by the time i was 13-14-15, it starts to be a combined effort of me and my parents and upon 16-17-18, i made little to no move to change my ways. i sincerely regret it now. after college and being apart from my family for so long and learning powerful lessons on what stands against the grains of time the strongest, family - particularly my sisters - became the centerpiece of my life. in college i met some interesting people, but the most notable thing i remember hearing from some of them, was how much they hated their siblings, younger or older or otherwise. just hated them for whatever reason. im not sure what exactly i thought, except that i was tired of listening to people act like this and that i had sounded like this too. and after failing some classes and being abandoned by friends, i realized the most important connection i could make was to my siblings. from the moment i decided to stop bad-mouthing them, i embraced them, their quirks, and loved them with everything i had. i still get aggravated with them ofc bc yaknow, nothings perfect, but they were perfect as they were. all i wanted and still want to do is spend time with them. i constantly think on how i was when i was growing up, especially for my little sister sabrina. i wasn't kind, as if the i didn't even know the word. i apologize a lot for it. every so often, i take her aside to talk to her about it. im still afraid to full acknowledge just how much damage i might've caused, but its still my responsibility to make it right and to mend it. sabrina, bless her, tells me not to worry, that she understands, that she doesn't remember a lot, except for a few things that make me cringe at myself. i apologize a lot. even now i am still sorry. i hope i am making up for it. i hope she doesn't grow to resent me, as i likely deserve. i love her so much i just want her to be happy and fulfilled and safe. i hate myself for how i was.
and i worry. a lot. its not exactly the same, theres a lot of different aspects to their dynamics, but i sometimes see myself in how sabrina acts towards savannah and it worries me. savannah is a lot less forgiving. a lot closer to bina's age and therefore harder to impress later on should sabrina change her tune. they both go at it though. savannah gives as much sabrina does, and especially so that she's 13 and moody as 13 year old typically are. all the same, i feel like the example i led has won out to the example i try to lead now and it frightens me. i want all 3 of us to be close. for all we've suffered together, to be alone in the world once our parents are gone frightens the shit out of me. more than anything, i want us to remain close. all three of us. i worry a lot about our relationship with each other...
anyway, so yeah i'm currently living with and working for my parents. i do take the work seriously even if doesn't look it and im proud of my (few) acomplishments. and living with them has its ups and downs. it feels good on hand to start from the ground up on how to like. live. how to be a person. or something. sorry i know i was going to go into this, but the previous topic got me down a little. i'm changing the subject.
my desk came in early, and im excited to put it together. can't wait really.
eh. i'm bumbed. will consider the listing of foods i eat.
peace.

Powerlunching with Mary Dauterman
I’d normally avoid posting two interviews in a row, but honestly my life is a bore, and this one’s been burning a hole in my e-pocket for over a month, so why not!? Happy March, y’all!
I met Mary when my friend Jackie invited us to a friendly lady dinner because we all had a background in advertising, and when Jackie moved away, Mary and I kept hanging out due to us both being art director-types that like graphic novels and are into doing funny projects. Mary has great glasses and is both younger than me and has some legit awards/recognitions under her belt (Young Guns, anyone?), so if she wasn’t so damn nice and creative, I would probably have to claw her face off (because women can’t be happy for each other’s successes, of course). Every once in a while we meet up to work from home together, brainstorm ideas, or just hang out; a little while ago we met for lunch at baba cool to do just that!
(This is also the first interview I’ve done in person instead of via emailed questions, so like, please bask in its authenticity and the novel way I can ask follow-up questions.)
What’s your full name? My full name is Mary Margaret Dauterman.
And where are you from originally? I’m from Dallas, Texas.
What do you do for a living? I’m a freelance art director and director, and I do lots of crafts and stuff I guess.
Where did you go to school? I went to University of Texas, it was in-state tuition, and I have no loans, so that’s great.
What’s in-state tuition? Because I’m from Texas, it was super cheap. But it was a pretty good school, and I got to live in Austin, and I love Austin. I was majoring in straight-up advertising, but in year 2 I found out there was a creative sequence you could apply to, so I got into that program and we made fake ads for 2 years, so I had a fake ad portfolio to get other jobs. That’s a thing only University of Texas has that was purely lucky.
Do you have a bachelor? Yeah, I have a BS.
HAHAHA… so advertising is sciences? I took so much biology and I thought I had every dramatic disease cause that’s all I was learning. I was like, I definitely have Marfan syndrome. It’s tall people who are near-sighted and have very long limbs and oversized hearts and a lot of them drop dead in their early 30s. The case study was this woman named Flo Hyman who was a volleyball player, and they think Abraham Lincoln had it, too.
Marfan syndrome!
I know you’ve done a lot of non-client side projects, can you tell me about them? I do so much non-client work. I just made a video about an influencer who shits her pants. I have written and illustrated two books. I made a tortilla towel a few years ago. I guess I made more web-based stuff at first; I made an awards show for gifs when I lived in California.
Do you code? No, not at all. That one, I had the idea at work and so there was a web developer who made it with my photoshop files. I’ve made a few tiny sites that I’ve made [my boyfriend] Kirill code, like yulebra.com. It’s just like a yule log, but a bra was burnt.
How do you find the time to do self-directed projects in between client work? I guess now I’m trying to figure out the best way to do it. Now I’m really excited when I have downtime in between clients, when before I used to be mad stressed [about money]; you just don’t know what’s going to happen. And then if you’re making an expensive project you’re like, I need money for my project. But now I’m psyched about my downtime cause I can focus on my weird shit. If I get obsessive about an idea I just want to work on it all the time, just literally squeezing it in any time I don’t have to respond to other stuff. I’m a big old dork and I like working.
How do you negotiate work or rates as a woman? The best thing is to keep it all in email, which I’ve actually been told not to do, but you can be as emotionless as possible and just send the info without making it about the fact that you’re a woman. Give yourself an hour to respond so you can think about it before you send something. Every time I send something out of anxiety it’s bad. Be a slower emailer!
So you work from home a lot of the time. I know you were in agencies before, so how did you make the transition? My first freelance gig was in Portland, and every time they’ve hired me since they ask if I can come out there. Sometimes I’m like, “Sure”, and other times I’m like, “I don’t want to come live there for 3 months again, that was intense, and my life is in New York”. So for them I work remotely a lot. And then a couple of places here, I’ve said, “Hey if we don’t have meetings, I can just work from home”, and they’re cool with it. The best way to do it is to have a client that is nowhere near you so there’s no way to go into an office.
How do you find clients? Do they come to you? Mostly the places I freelance for had recruiters that reached out to me asking for me to become full time and I said, "No, but I will freelance for you”. So that’s how it’s happened a lot. Sometimes, since I’ve worked at so many big agencies, all the people I’ve met there have dispersed and will sometimes reach out or I’ll bug them and find gigs.
What would your dream job be? I think in terms of lifestyle, I like my [current] lifestyle, it’s great. Project-wise, I’m wanting to do more short films, so I’m planning on that. But it would be such a dream if someone else paid for that, not me.
I’m pretty certain I want to focus on directing but the aesthetics of things are still very important [to me], that’s part of why I like [self-producing projects], cause it’s all that stuff at once. I’m thinking I want to be directing commercials and then getting to do passion projects with that funding, but if there was no financial concern, it would be cool to just be directing movies… but that’s like, NOT REAL, haha.
But probably [my dream job is] no real job. Just lots of things at once.
In regards to working at home, what do you find yourself wearing? Well I only have one pair of sweatpants. I’m looking for recommendations for a second.
I was in UNIQLO recently and I’m considering getting a pair. I know we’re both kind of tall, and you’re taller than me, but I have a hard time finding sweatpants that are long enough. Long sweatpants are important. I bought some online and they had a drop crotch and I’m like, this isn’t going to work, even if no one’s ever going to see me. Just, no.
I also hate the ones that are low-rise. I need a high-rise on my sweatpants! You want to be cozy!
Do you wear them everyday? Lately, embarrassingly yes; sometimes leggings, sometimes I will put on comfy jeans. My boyfriend was making fun of me because sometimes I will get dressed from the waist up because I have video calls, but sometimes it’s literally the t-shirt I slept in the night before and then I’ll put on pants.
What’s your favourite thing to eat when you’re working from home? I’ve basically been trying to recreate sweetgreen bowls. I’ve been doing lots of stir fried veggies and grains and stuff, which would be $15 if I weren’t at home.
What’s the most shameful thing you eat? I eat handfuls of chocolate chips a lot. I went through a phase where I was just making myself a giant grilled cheese every single day, and then I was like, Why do I feel horrible?! It’s so delicious! Actually no, I take that back; the most shameful thing is when I just Seamless something to my house when I have plenty of time to cook.
How does your boyfriend like living with someone who works from home? Recently I was bragging to someone about how I was really clean, and [my boyfriend] was like, “Uh NO, sometimes I come home from work and wonder, what the hell happened in here?!” If I’m intensely in a project I will still cook myself lunch and then just leave everything out, which is gross.
I get that, you don’t want to spend your precious time cleaning. You’re like, Huuuhhhh I have a deadline!!
What do you listen to when you work? Sometimes I watch movies when I’m working if it’s something mindless. I listen to podcasts and recently I’ve been listening to lots of classical music but it kind of makes me feel like I’m a serial killer plotting a murder.
How do you practice self-care* and work/life balance? Well I just came from the gym. I have 2 gym classes I really like going to but I can only go to them if I’m working from home because they’re at 10am on weekdays. And I’m like, who are all the other people in here?! They’re packed classes!
I think a lot of people either work in the service industry at night, or they’re like us, or maybe they’re housewives? I think at the Park Slope location, all housewives. And there’s always one 40-50yr old guy in this one pilates class I take and I decided he just sold a bajillion dollar company, that’s his deal. Although he would probably go to Equinox if that’s his story, not Crunch. So I dunno what he does.
Do you have any weird skills or talents I don’t know about? I should be talented but I’m not. I took piano until I was 18 but I am not good at it.
Anything else you want to plug while you’re here? I recommend getting a cat while you work from home. It makes you feel less alone, even if they’re passed out asleep. [My cats are] Lemon, from Liz Lemon, and Bobby, after Bobby Hill. Lemon loves conference calls and she comes running and sits on my lap during them which is really nice.
Mary with Bobby, last August
Are there any tv shows or books you're really into right now?* Ooh ok I JUST binged all of Russian Doll in one day and I'm pretty sure I loved it. I'm also always re-watching old eps of King of the Hill and X-Files. I'm currently reading The Road Through the Wall by Shirley Jackson. I'm really into the graphic novel Beverly and got Sabrina by Nick Drnaso (your suggestion!). It was DARK and sad and good.
What are you wearing? I’m wearing a sweatshirt that is red, a shirt that I sleep in a lot, and leggings that I think are my mom’s, and some Nikes, and a coat. I’m *so* glad this is my outfit for our interview, but it’s pretty accurate.
*Shoutout to Chanice Hughes-Greenberg and her inspiring bi-monthly interview newsletter Who Is She, who I blatantly stole these great questions from. Subscribe!
