Ok very tmi period discussion
My period has been going on for 3 weeks now. My last one was around 2 months long.
The cramps were worse than usual today. I found work really really hard because of it. I found school difficult the other day because of it. I walked out of my study lesson, and sat in the nurses office with a heat pad for a bit because of how much pain I was in.
My period symptoms are not good. When I was 15, I used to get this weird nausea thing the two weeks leading up to my period. I’d wake up, and feel super grotty, and I felt like I was going to throw up. (I mainly coughed up flem, and once or twice bile?) I started self medicating with glucose tablets, so I’d take one in the evening when I went to bed, and one in the morning, first thing, the minute I woke up, to help with the nausea. My cramps were insane, I’d get nausea randomly so I’d struggle to eat in school. My breasts hurt like hell, and I’d have insane mood swings.
So at 15 they put me onto rigevidon. I took that for about a year. Some of the symptoms were still there. I mean the nausea was gone so?? My mum was worried because I’d basically break down crying a lot. My periods weren’t regular anyways so my pills got changed to Gedarel 120 (I think that’s the name?) for a couple months. But those didn’t do anything, I remember the mood swings feeling worse and crying a lot more?
So in February I got nexplanon. And it all went away. I didn’t even get my period. Until the 2nd of august, when I got my period again. After a month and 1/2 of straight bleeding I went to the doctors and the nurse asked about my symptoms. She gave me a pack of rigevidon, and told me to take it consecutively (no breaks like the regular) for 3 months, and that after that, if the bleeding didn’t stop we’d look at other options. It was that or an IUD, something that’s stressful to think about most of the time, let alone whilst you’re in your final year of high school, and you’re terrified that you might be broken in some way because of all this mess.
The period stopped sometime after I started taking them, I think a couple days after? Like late September early October time. So like the nurse said I kept taking the pack.
I thought finally, I would be done with this all. Then mid November, the first week of my first ever job, I got my period again. Now I should clarify: I’m not expecting nexplanon or any birth control to get rid of my periods full stop, so I didn’t think much of it at first.
But once again, it just kept going, after about 10 days I knew it was another bad one. It’s now been around 3 weeks of this. I’m planning on contacting my doctor again tomorrow.
The last time I saw the nurse, she said to look up PMDD since a lot of the symptoms lined up. And they do, like insanely well.
I’m unbelievably scared. I can’t go off birth-control because the original symptoms wrecked my fucking life to the point I was missing school regularly (something very difficult to do as the daughter of a teacher). But what if, despite being on this, they come back. What if my fertility is effected by this.
I don’t want to get rid of my periods. I just want to be able to manage them. I’m going through hell for literal MONTHS when I get them. My entire emotional state turns into shambles. I can’t keep doing this but I don’t know what another doctors visit is going to do at this point.
I’m 17 years old and I have another what? 30-40 years of this shit??
I can’t keep fucking doing it
#gwendols rambles#period#menstruation#someone please tell me what to do?#i feel hopeless and scared#and like something is seriously wrong#PMDD#and I’m fucking lucky#my doctors actually listen#my friend has all the same symptoms as me#arguably worse#and they get Jack shit support#wtaf#and then some cis dude will make a joke at the expense of his partner saying how his wife is only emotional because it’s#“it’s that time of the month” like we’re fucking werewolves???#like no fucking shit of course anyone who menstruates is emotional? do you see what we’re dealing with??#we’ve got to pay for this shit might I add#I’m lucky I live in England because my healthcare is free#it’s absolutely ridiculous that people have to pay for this shit in other countries#feminism

Antlers, Bog, Wildflowers 💚
TW: fat shaming, drugs, human trafficking, homophobia, body dysphoria, clowns
antlers - if you could change anything about your appearance without worrying about judgement, what would you change?
I would choose to change my weight. I dont care what people would think if I changed my weight to be thinner, people already judge me for not being thin, so what would it matter if I could magically be thinner. But its genetic to be curvy, and I dont really like it. I didnt really start puberty until high school, and at that time I started birth control because of how awful and frequent my periods were, which sped up the puberty growing part. My mom has told me that I got fat after high school. Well that's when I started changing from having a prepubescent body to a womans body. She has fat shamed me, but when I was thinner she told me I was too thin. Most of my insecurities come from my mother, so I think I'd change myself not to be super thin hut to what I like.
bog - where would you most like to live?
I would live in Derby England. From all the research I have done (this was in like 2017-2018) it is quite pleasant there. It rains but not a lot of snow or freezing temperatures, yearly temp is like 40-70 so sweater weather almost all year, affordable economy, and free healthcare. That or Oregon, but Oregon has alot of drug problems (not talking about marijuana) and human trafficking, so I dont think I would like to live there unless if I knew the area was safe. Where I live and work has drug problems too (I pass used needles a lot omw to work from the parking lot, and i have almost stepped on a needle full of heroin at the local grocery store) and we have a lot of human trafficking also, there are more and more of those signs that have a pho e number and what not popping up where I live and it honestly scares me. When i visited california in 2017 i really liked it there but it was warm, it was San Francisco, I do really lime northern california however!
wildflowers - how do you like to dress?
I dont really know tbh, my self identity is wish washy so I dont really know. I tend to dress in comfortable clothes, pretty much all the time. I havent worn normal pants for an extended period since early 2020, I did wear cargo shorts for a while until my mother said I look like an and I QUOTE "an ugly butch lesbian" I think it might be internalized homophobia. So I threw those out because she made me feel like shit. I wear leggings too! I just ordered a pair from amazon along with a cute cozy black cardigan that I am going to put a cute lucky cat pin I got from a patreon supporter gift. I also wear baggy shirts usually from the mens section when I go shopping. I hide my body because I usually dont like my curves or attention to my chest (I am a 36DDD) my body causes my a lot of dysphoria, and I have considered getting a breast reduction, but then I realized it wouldnt look right with the rest of my curves. I dress like this to feel safe and to not draw attention to myself, but it's getting to the point where I'm literally hiding who I am. People outside (everyone besides my boyfriend and mothers) can only see my hands and eyes. I knitted myself a safe hat but it's a bit big so it covers everything and the brim goes down past my eye brows, then with a face mask all you can see is my eyes. I think maybe me trying to hide away is effecting my mental health in a bad way and I should dress how i want to to be happy. I am not happy dressing like this, but it keeps me from having anxiety when people look at me. Tonight i decided to dress in ways that make me feel happy, such as cute clowncore stuff. I'm going to save $10-20 a paycheck, so that would be $40-80 a month, and my boyfriend said he would match what I save up as well to get me a happy outfit, which consists of a colorfully striped shirt, dickies overalls, red hightops, a rainbow patch to put on the little front pocket of the overalls, some rainbow jewelry, worm on a string earrings, and some cute clown pins to put on the straps. I created this outfit based on not only clowns, but what makes me happy. Clowns, worm on strings, and furbies make me extremely happy and I need to embrace my happiness.

I'd like to send you an ask about healthcare in America, but my character limit ran out. If you don't mind, I will divide it in parts...?
Part 1) I follow your blog for Poldark, but as an American, I noticed your reblog about the healthcare crisis in our country. This is personal to me, because my family has experienced the greed of our insurance companies and pharmaceutical industry firsthand.Part 2) My dad was diagnosed with colon cancer last year, and the cost of surgery and chemo almost bankrupt him. My mother has hyperthyroidism but has no health insurance and doesn’t take her medicine because the cost is too high. I myself lost health insurance for two years after my father retired.Part 3) I don’t know how you feel about Bernie Sanders, but I support him for his lifelong and genuine concern of the gap between the very wealthy and the very poor, and his tireless fight to bring a national healthcare system to our country. Older generations say millenialls support him because we want everything for free - I say I support him because I don’t want my parents to die just because they’re poor. Part 4) Lastly, I wonder from across the pond, what are your thoughts about the healthcare crisis in my country, and what has your experience been with healthcare in your own country?
——-
Well first of all I’m so sorry for you and for your family. Illness is already its own burden that brings worries about money, never mind having the worry of medical bills on TOP of those too.
I’m going to be honest and tell you I don’t know a whole lot about the US election candidates - maybe once the election is imminent I’ll take more of an interest but the process is sooo long and it’s still so far away. I will say that anyone who is advocating for universal healthcare is worth supporting.
I’ll tell you a bit about my experience with the NHS in Scotland.
Our healthcare is free at the point of care and I can guarantee I would not be alive today if it wasn’t for the NHS. Not because I’ve had life threatening conditions but because I would literally have made sure I wasn’t alive. (Suicide TW) It may not seem like much (especially given what others go through with chronic conditions etc) but I was getting treatment for acne since I was 12 years old. I’ve detailed my treatments in my ‘Skin Troubles with Scabby Legs McGee’ tag so I won’t run through the meds again here. Dentistry in this country is free until you’re 18, I needed multiple teeth pulled, braces etc. Optometry appointments are free, and I had to wear glasses to correct an astigmatism for 4 at least 4 years as a young teen.My family would not have been able afford all of this and my self esteem (which is already affected enough by it) would not have allowed ME to survive it.
As for life threatening, my mum had treatment for breast cancer, a mastectomy and a reconstruction 19 years ago. We had very little income as it was because she couldn’t work, but we didn’t have medical bills hanging over us which would not have been the case without the NHS. This year in January we found out my mum’s cancer had come back and she has been receiving treatment ever since - again, while money is tight and the pressure of future finances are hanging over us, I’m at least working now and we don’t have those medical bills to pay. We would have gone bankrupt when my mum first had cancer, there is no doubt about that.
My aunt had a cardiac arrest in February and was attended to by two ambulances and a medical car (and has been getting treatment ever since). I think I read somewhere it’s like over $1000 bill for an ambulance in the US and that is, quite frankly, horrific. In the past 5 years alone my dad has needed 3 ambulances.I have a diabetic aunt who has severe arthritis. She has had a partial leg amputation and surgery on both of her elbows. She has been unable to work for years, but she doesn’t have medical bills hanging over her.
It’s all very well me saying it’s ‘free’ by the way, it is definitely not free. So anti-millennial folk don’t know what they’re talking about. The NHS is funded through taxes and in Scotland we’re lucky enough to have no prescription charges but that isn’t the case for England. We pay for dental work after 18 (off the top of my head I needed a filling a few months ago, I paid for private treatment in order to get a white filling and it cost me £60, if I’d taken the NHS treatment it would have been a silver filling costing £16). There are allowances for people on benefits/full time education etc
People complain and complain about the NHS and the wait times etc but they don’t blame the government and systems like the Tory party systematically dismantling the NHS by reducing funding and causing staff shortages etc. The option to go private is always there if you can afford it of course and many people choose to go private to reduce their waiting times but my mum started treatment within (at most) 4 weeks of her cancer diagnosis. She saw the GP for a persistent cough and was sent to hospital the same day for an xray, within a week she had the diagnosis and within another week she had started treatment. People complain about having to wait a week to see a GP but I have worked in a doctor’s office and having been on the ‘front lines’ as it were, emergencies are ALWAYS seen to. The scare mongering stories the anti-universal healthcare people push are absolute nonsense
You asked about my views on the healthcare crisis in your country from an outsiders perspective and I can honestly say it terrifies me. Like…terrifies me all the way to my bones. I can’t imagine living somewhere where I could be charged thousands of pounds for something I cannot control. It’s horrific and draconian and I genuinely feel for you and the people of your country.

Tempesst-Music for Tempestuous Times
Oct 29, 2020
By Mossy Ross
Credit: Gyorgy Laszlo
Tempesst could be a band that’s one marijuana puff and a mushroom trip away from being a Ken Kesey novel. But they’re too smart for that. Maybe the rockstars of yore could stay up for days on end, free-lovin’ and festival-in,’ tripping balls for days on end. Or if we’re talking the 70s, snorting lines off of supermodels’ asses, and shooting up in the dingy downstairs bathrooms of, what are now, legendary music venues. But escapism is so last century. Now, the music venues have been replaced with condos. Our planet is facing extinction. Political unrest is threatening democracies. Social media is taking over our lives. And for many of us, a future with job security and healthcare is unlikely. But that isn’t stopping Tempesst. They’ve realized there’s nowhere to run, so might as well face the future head on…while still hanging on to what seemed like a much fun-ner past.
Tempesst’s dreamy new album, appropriately titled “Must Be a Dream,” makes existential crises seem romantic. Their flavor of rock is one of my favorite kinds…pretty. Tempesst shows us that the shitty parts of life don’t always have to lead to screaming anger, but that something beautiful can come out of asking the hard questions. Their retro style gives the modern problems they sing about a feeling of comforting nostalgia. Showing us that we can still slip on a polyester suit, get behind a Hammond organ, and rock out; while being honest about the terrifying future we face. Tempesst reminds us that if all else fails, we always have an analog world to go back to. And that might not be such a bad thing.
Before you read my chat with lead singer, Toma Benjamin, start going down the rabbit hole with Tempesst by watching their video for “Mushroom Cloud.” It not only has addictive visuals, but three of my favorite things: kitschy decor, a man in makeup, and a slammin’ saxophone solo.
youtube
Mossy: What’s your band’s history?
TB: The four of us, Blake, Cain, Andy, and I are from the same town in Australia. It’s a collection of towns. But the closest, most famous of the towns, is called Noosa. It’s a little beach town. So Cain, Andy, and I grew up with each other. But Blake’s actually about five years younger, so I met Blake because he lived three houses down the road. But it wasn’t until we were all in London, that we were just part of two groups that happened to come together, and all of these sorts of coincidences. I suppose when you move to a new city, for us coming all the way from Australia, you tend to find other people who have done the same thing. And then you bond, because you’ve got this similar experience of leaving home behind, and coming to this new city.
Mossy: What brought you to London?
TB: We were in New York, and we would’ve loved to stay in America. We were trying to get a visa to come stay in the states. And we got this business visa through my dad’s film distribution company. He distributes all the really bad B-grade films before the internet. People would actually buy the rights for them and distribute them across Australasia, which is pretty hilarious. This was in the 90s and 2000s. So we got a business visa to stay in the U.S., but you had to renew itall the time. So we renewed it once, and we tried to renew it again, but they wouldn’t let us. So we had to pack up all of our shit in thirty days and go back to Australia. And after growing up and spending all this time in this little coastal town in Australia, and then going to the complete opposite end of the spectrum, living in New York and experiencing the city and the energy, it was just too hard to stay home. So we lasted about three months and then we were like, “Well if we can’t go to New York, where else can we go?” So, not so very romantic (Laughs). It was for practical reasons. We could easily get a visa to come to London, and then we fell in love with the place after coming here.
Mossy: I always have to ask people from England or Australia who their influences are. I feel like there’s always such refined musical tastes coming from those two countries. Who were you listening to growing up?
TB: I’m a little bit of a late bloomer, to be honest. We grew up in quite a sheltered environment. Our families are quite religious. Myself and Andy grew up playing music in church. So it wasn’t until I left that world when I was about eighteen, that I started to learn about other artists. And I was really lucky to have a close friend who was actually playing with us in the original Tempesst, when we first started the band. And he’s a music lover and would spend all of his time listening to music from all over the place, and would just introduce us to some really great art. And then when I moved to New York, he also moved with me to New York. And I would say moving to New York introduced me to a lot of DIY bands like Yeasayer and Darwin Deez. When I was there, they were really big, and it was kind of the first time for me listening to that.
So getting into all the classic albums that I love now, that didn’t happen until well and truly in my twenties. And that was just because of my circumstance. But when I did start listening, it was just all the classics. I was just trying to catch up. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, Jeff Buckley was one of my initial favorites. I still feel sometimes like I’m catching up. There’s just so much great music to consume, and not enough time to do it. And sometimes when you’re making music all day, the last thing you feel like doing is listening to music. So it’s kind of strange, I find myself listening to Talkback radio. I feel like I’m a 70 year-old man. (Laughs)
Mossy: What religion?
TB: Like Pentacostal, Christian. So yeah, I had some R&B gospel influences. My dad used to listen to George Benson, so I would try and mimic George Benson by playing guitar like George Benson, and singing the melodies with the guitar line. He might have listened to the odd Beatles song. But yeah, it wasn’t like my dad was listening to, like, really cool obscure records and introducing me to his favorite artists. He didn’t give a shit. (Laughs) He was listening to Christian music.
Mossy: I’m always surprised at how many rock musicians I talk to who grew up religious. I always assumed they would have had the cool dad who listened to obscure records, but a lot of them were sheltered and didn’t get to hear any of that. It’s almost like that upbringing helps you create a really original sound, because you didn’t have those influences around you when you were growing up.
Credit: Gyorgy Laszlo
Your sonic landscape matches your aesthetic. The way you present yourselves. Is that life imitating art, or art imitating life?
TB: I wouldn’t say there was any intention. I think there’s certain music you feel inspired by, and there’s certain fashion that you like, and it tends to be that all of these things come from that same world for us. I would also say that sonically, a lot of the equipment we use is old, vintage equipment. We’ve got vintage synths and our desk is a 1979 Neve console, and it sounds like an old school desk. So I think it just so happens that that’s the kind of music we’re into. We’re influenced by the artists that led us to have a think about what kind of instruments or gear we want, and it just naturally creates this specific sound.
Mossy: Why the extra “s” in Tempesst?
TB: We originally spelled Tempesst with one “s.” But soon after, we found that there was a 20-year old Celtic rock band that had the name already. When we started releasing music, Spotify started listing our music on their band page.
Mossy: Where did you shoot the video for “Mushroom Cloud?”
TB: An old workmens hall here around the corner in Islington. It’s a little hall that you can hire out, and we just thought it was funky and fit the vibe of the song.
Mossy: Tell me about your album cover.
TB: That was done by a guy named Jose Mendez. We basically sent the record out to a bunch of artists, and asked them to send us back what the sound of the album would look like. And Jose sent us back this sketch. The ways he was describing the songs felt like he really understood what we were trying to say. And then when he sent us the sketch, we all felt like it was really cool and trippy, and quite bold. And we wanted the music to feel quite bold and unpredictable. So I guess what we loved about it, was that it felt very bold and sort of random. Some of the ways he personified the characters in the songs were really cool.
Mossy: How would you describe the Age of the Bored (the title of a song off their new album)?
TB: I would describe it as insular. I would describe it as a waste. It was actually Eric that came up with the lyrical concept, and we wrote the lyrics together. I think the frustration came from life caught in the vacuum of this device that sits by our bedside, and in our pocket, in a holder in the car. It’s literally your entire life is linked to this device, and all of the things that distract you, and pull your attention away from the things you should be doing. It’s like a loud voice just demanding your attention. Binging with messages and fucking emails, and everything just taking you off your focus. When I come in to the studio now, I leave my phone in my pocket, hang my jacket up behind the door, and it sits there all day. Because otherwise you find that your whole life is ruled by this device. As opposed to it being something that serves you, it actually takes over. So the idea of that song was just choosing to separate yourself from it at times, and not have this symbiotic relationship with your mobile phone. Everything comes from this idea of not wanting to waste. That life is precious and we only have limited time.
Credit: Gyorgy Laszlo
Mossy: I think it’s great when people who aren’t old, are telling people things that some people don’t realize unless they’re old. It takes a lot of self awareness to admit that this device gives you anxiety, and keeps you from being in the moment, and that you don’t have to have it by you all the time. I think it’s important for people to say that.
TB: One of my favorite lines in the whole record is in that song. It’s, “Offline, the new underground way to unwind.” How strange is it that, like, if you say to someone “I left my phone at home today,” they’re like, “What!? You have to go home!” It’s this bizarre idea that if you wanna unwind, if you wanna feel free, if you don’t wanna feel anxious, you don’t want to be ruled by this device and you leave your phone at home, people just freak out.
Mossy: It’s like a form of rebellion to leave your phone behind.
TB: Yeah, because we have lived in both worlds. So it’s like, you have the contrast. And it’s terrifying to think that at some point, if you have kids or whatever, that they’re gonna live in the world, and they won’t have that contrast. They won’t know what it’s like not to live with a mobile phone. It really will be a very different thing for someone to have that separation from their phone.
Mossy: “Is That All There Is?” also seems to have a message that speaks to a lot of people.
TB: I think again, it’s just another chance to talk about something that feels a little bit silly. That we aren’t always the best stewards of our time. That song’s probably more focused on a time of reflection. What happens is every year, I go back home for Christmas. And it’s a really strange time, because I have this contrast of leaving my busy life in London, and going back to this little beach town, and sitting on the beach. And I’m in this new environment, observing the people in that environment, reflecting on my year. And then the contrast always brings up these questions. For example in that song, “Is this it? Is this all we do? Just work our asses off all year?” And sometimes questioning even the whole creative process, and the creative lifestyle. And even questioning if that’s something that has merit. Does the world need more music? Does the world need another person trying to share their ideas? You’re grappling with this tension as an artist, wondering if the world needs any more fucking artists. (Laughs) There’s so much amazing music, you couldn’t possibly consume it all in one lifetime. And it’s also about just working out and reconciling with just growing up. That we’re not young forever. And we’ll have to, at some point, accept our mortality. And it’s that time when I go back to Australia, and I stop the busy-ness, and I’m sitting on the beach…that I get tormented with all these ideas. (Laughs)
Listen to “Must Be a Dream” on all streaming platforms or, better yet, buy it on vinyl.

The perfect storm that UK nursing faces - healthcare/political post
Okay so some of you may remember last year when I was posting about how nurses have suffered years of pay freezes and due to rising cost of living, inflation etc, the average nurse was thousands worse off, with some leaving the profession or taking extra jobs to make up for the deficit in their wages. At present, nurses are 14% worse off than they were in 2010, and is predicted to drop a further 2.6k by 2020 against inflation
We were eventually ‘rewarded’ a 1% pay rise which meant nothing because in the same year inflation increased by 2.6% and our national insurance contribution increased which effectively meant we had received a pay cut… yet again. This pay increase was recommended by the NHS Pay review body in their 30th report, 2017 (see 1), however because of the government imposed pay cap we could not get higher than 1%, and the review body explicitly stated that this could not go on.
A nurse currently starts on 22.5kish and can work their way up to 28kish. This is a band 5 registered nurse , and this pay is across the board via Agenda For Change, a national pay system for NHS staff regulated . Only private companies can pay equivalent nurses more. We cannot just ask for pay rises, we have to lobby the government. To get any higher than this 28k, one must become a band 6+ nurse and this means becoming a specialist, or into a more managerial role. It means that thousands of experienced nurses with decades in the NHS won’t receive more than 28k a year.
Alongside this Nursing is rightfully a graduate profession needing a Bachelors Degree to register, however training bursaries have been scrapped which means student nurses now have to pay to train to be a nurse (it used to be free). I’m sure my US friends will think this normal, BUT student nurses have to work 37.5hrs per week for the NHS for free to be able to pass their degree. So they are paying to work. This has led to a 23% drop in nursing university applications
All this means we are struggling to recruit and retain nurses. There are now more nurses leaving the nursing register than there are joining . 1 in 3 nurses are coming up to retirement age, so this means we are going to lose many more. We are also losing thousands of European nurses because of Brexit .Currently we are short of 41,000 nurses (see 2.) and this will only increase.
One thing Health Education England has decided to do is invent a new role called the Nursing Associate which was supposed to ‘bridge the gap’ between health care assistants and registered nurses. A potentially valuable role, but ignores the fact we already have Assistant Practitioners who do fit this gap already, and do it extremely well. Instead of funding nurses money was put into training these who were supposed to support RNs. They will do a foundation degree one day a week for 2 years alongside working in the NhS. However as some of us predicted, some trusts are converting nurse vacancies into nursing associate posts and have cut RN places to make way for this support role, ignoring the evidence that graduate RN reduce mortality rates. This creates a huge safety concern and also threatens the RN job security because some chief nurses have said it makes sense for the NA to take over RN tasks to ‘free up RN for advanced practice and supervision’ aka being the paperwork pushers and assessors whilst NA do the jobs we became nurses to do. The Nursing Associate will be paid less than an RN, but will be allowed to do the majority of tasks that an RN does - which begs the question, if we - for example - need three years of medicines management to safely administer meds, why are they allowed to after doing only 1 day a week at uni (cramming in all sorts of subjects) for two years? Unfortunately with the amount of underfunding and shortage going on, hospital trusts are just going to see people who can do a job for cheaper, rather than looking at it more broadly and seeing that anyone can be trained to complete an action, but it needs education to complete it to the same standard and with the same reduced mortality and good outcomes an RN has be proven to produce. It also really isnt fair on these Trainee Nursing Associates as they came to bridge the gap, not replace the RN for far less pay. I'm lucky to have worked with some and they have been amazing as trainees, but should never be seen as a sub for registered nurses
So all this, along with the deliberate underfunding of the NHS has created a perfect storm. This summer was a 'summer of protest’ in which nurses protested for fair pay. Last month it was announced that our pay cap was to be scrapped however no pay restoration or rise was given. Our challencellor then said that if we are to be given a pay rise we must be more productive, ignoring the fact nurses already are looking after too many patients (the ratio on my acute med-surg ward is 8-10:1 and 13:1 at night) are not getting breaks, are working extra hours for no pay, are at their wits end and routinely suffering mental and physical health problems due to the role. Today was the UK government’s autumn Budget statement and we expected a pay rise to be announced. This was not the case. Instead we got told that our Agenda For Change pay structure is being subjected to ‘reform negotiations’ by our Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt (who no-one likes, sorry but not sorry) and if these reforms bear fruit, only then would there be money released from the budget for our pay rises/restoration.
So basically it seems like the Agenda For Change pay structure, which you can read more about here, will be changed and only then will we receive a pay rise. But what changes? We all know these changes cannot possibly be for our benefit if only when they are changed will we receive extra money. Many of us believe our unsociable hours enhancements will be targeted and removed - at the minute we are paid extra for nights, weekends etc. This is something that has been attempted in the past and something they’d love to get their hands on. It’ll be a case of robbing Peter to pay Paul, either way we win nothing.
In the long run the patients suffer. They’re the ones who need nurses. Nurses we are currently struggling to not only recruit but retain.
So yeah, thats it in a nutshell in my words and with the factual stuff cited. The next few years are going to be… interesting to say the least.

Hallo when you go the hospital in England, does it cost money?
haha hi?
the short answer is no, we don’t pay for most* medical care, at least at the point of service
(*yes, we pay taxes that fund it and so we technically pay for our healthcare but it’s a fraction of the cost spread out over a ton of time)
the longer answer is sometimes? it depends on things like you’re age and where you live. england has different rules to the rest of the uk.
i’m sure you were looking for a yes or no, but i gave you a wall, i’ll bold the highlights if you wanna skim:
across the board we don’t pay for hospital visits, or ambulances - i think some of the remoter islands do have to pay for the medical boats that transport them to facilities on the mainland? or they were considering bringing in the charge...i live on the mainland so i’m not sure
we do pay for prescriptions (at least in england) but you’re not charged for anything given to you while you’re being treated in the hospital, and you don’t have to pay for recurring treatments like chemo. i know wales gets free prescriptions. if you get the pill on prescription you don’t pay for that and there’s some other stuff (i think TB controls and some of the bad STI’s and stuff? basically stuff they want controlled, they don’t want someone not being able to afford treatment and ending up with a giant problem when things spread)
you get all your childhood immunisations free, and any they give you at school (the cervical one at high school was free), boosters etc. not sure about holiday jabs - i think it depends what you need
in england you can get subsidies for your prescription or at least money off if you get a pre-pay prescription card and also groups like over-60′s, kids, pregnant women get free or reduced cost medicine. not sure what the actual rules are but i know all of those from experience so i can say they happen at least
you also don’t pay for dental/eye appointments and treatment in most cases, if you’re using an nhs service, are under 18, or are over-18 but still in full-time education (uni students) or are over 60, you get free visits/treatment. i never realised how expensive dentist visits were until i graduated holy moly
oh also if you’re diabetic or have a significant risk you get certain eye stuff free (certain extra tests they want to get to prevent you needing more expensive treatment later on, i think)
you have to pay for any extras like aesthetic choices (like nicer fillings, whitening treatments etc) and you pay for the cost of your actual glasses/lenses (at least as an adult, i can’t remember as a kid) but you do get free braces under 18
and you can still always get insurance to cover private treatment etc i know we have it for our glasses because we were spending a ton out of pocket so now we spend nothing out of pocket
tl:dr - no we don’t pay for most of our medical care, especially preventative measures bc we know it’d cost us 20x more if we didn’t and also it’s the right thing to do and i feel incredibly lucky to be born here given my family’s medical history
although i will say that my dad drove himself to the hospital while having a heart attack because he ‘didn’t think it was anything serious and i didn’t want to bother the paramedics’ so...don’t do that. bless every saint in heaven he made it to A&E before he collapsed.

The Power of Suggestion
“Women deliver their own babies alone on the floor of small living rooms everyday...I felt like if they can do that why couldn't I?” In the months leading up to giving birth, Paula practiced Hypnobirthing affirmations and listened to guided visualizations to help her stay calm and focused during labor. She also planned to deliver in a hospital with midwives. As her due date approached, Paula’s skepticism of her achieving her desired birth experience in a hospital setting grew. After following her doula’s suggestion of switching to a birth center, Paula had almost exactly the birth experience she had known was possible - supported yet unassisted on the floor (at the birth center).
What had you known about childbirth prior to your own experience?
I was born and raised in the UK where mostly midwifery care and assisted births is the norm. Even in a hospital, the set up feels slightly less "medical" than it does in the US.
Oddly, in my teens I was very much of the mindset that giving birth sounded horrific and if I ever had a child I wanted all the drugs. But I think that was mostly due to the experience of my one 16-year-old friend who ended up with what seemed like a million stitches and a lot of screaming similar to what I had seen in the Hollywood films.
What was important to you in having a natural birth?
Once I was pregnant I became a crazed, birth research, junky and the more and more I learned the more an un-medicated birth seemed like the most stress-free, healthy and in terms of recovery (perhaps this sounds insane) the most likely pain-free option for both myself and the baby.
Talking to my mother who had both my sister and I naturally, it seemed obvious I would be able have a natural birth. By the third trimester there was no question of my capability and in my mind, an epidural or C-section was truly reserved for a medical emergency.
If I am being honest, I think this persistence of wanting a natural birth was mostly out of stubbornness. I felt like the more I learned about it all the more I perceived this pervasive fear of birth as really some crazy construct aimed at up-selling women's anxiety – and well I was like, ‘No, no, no!’
You were planning on giving birth at UCLA hospital with the midwives up until 35 weeks pregnant, what made you decide to have your baby outside of the hospital 'last minute'?
As I mentioned previously, in the U.K. hospital births tend to be a little less intense than those in the U.S. And in my opinion, I think a lot of that has to do with the fact the U.S system is for profit and the U.K. wants to keep costs down as it's part of universal healthcare.
So with this in mind, I felt like the hospital system would be fine. While I had great prenatal care with the UCLA midwives, as my due date loomed and I found out I couldn't give birth in water, I would need an IV (just because) and would be constantly monitored I felt more and more uneasy that I would be able to have anything close to the birth I wanted.
The last straw came when the suggestion was presented to schedule an induction at 39 weeks seemly for convenience. This made me high tail it outta' there and thankfully to Del Mar on the suggestion of my doula, Emma!
You chose to do Hypnobirthing for childbirth preparation. What was inspiring to you about a specific childbirth method like Hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing just seemed to make the most sense to me given that really most of labor (from what I had read) is about managing your anxiety and your breathing – two things at the core of Hypnobirthing.
Did you utilize the Hypnobirthing techniques in your labor and birth?
I'm not sure I managed to disappear into ‘a changing colored cloud of love’ [Hypnobirthing’s guided visualization of the colors of the rainbow to help with relaxation and calm], but as soon as my water broke I was very calm, and at no point was I scared.
Did you have any fears around giving birth?
Yes – the obvious fear of the unknown and the slight fear that something might go medically wrong. I was also a little scared of tearing, which reflecting back on it now, once the time came to do the repair after the birth I didn't really care about the stitches in my vagina at all!
You are originally from England and as a writer, you have traveled around the world quite a bit. Do you feel that fear around childbirth is a country specific cultural issue or deeply systemic to human kind – this fear of the great unknown?
I think being from the UK certainly gave me an advantage in trusting midwives and natural birth overall. I also think traveling to developing nations helped me gain some perspective of different cultural practices depending on what’s available to them.
Women deliver their own babies alone on the floor of small living rooms everyday and then pick up and go feed the family. I felt like if they can do that why couldn't I in the ideal environment?
We are very lucky in the Western world but I also think that birth is over-medicalized in many ways. A pregnant woman isn’t sick – she is giving life!
Can you tell me about your birth?
Haha! My birth was a little surreal. Before I gave birth, I read on some dumb blog if you stood naked under a full moon and rubbed your belly it would induce labor.
At 38 weeks there was a full moon, so I decided to give it a go. Afterwards, I went to bed to read a book and 10 minutes later my water broke. I called Del Mar and at that time, around 12:30 am, I was having mild cramping every 10 minutes or so. Jen, the midwife, told me to call back when the contractions were strong and coming every 4 minutes for at least an hour.
Within 30 minutes the contractions felt pretty intense. I wasn't sure if I was just being wimpy, but all I could do was ball up every time a contraction came on. An hour later, the contractions were every 3-5 minutes and I felt I needed to go in.
I arrived at Del Mar around 3:30 am. Jen checked my cervix (I was 6 cm dilated), ran me a bath and checked the baby’s heart rate. My boyfriend turned on my Hawaiian lullaby music and a few minutes later Emma, my doula, arrived.
If I'm honest, once Emma got there everyone but her disappeared from my consciousness. I was in the tub at that point, but then had to get out as the baby's heart rate was a little high, possibly from me overheating. So I moved to the floor with my elbows leaning on the edge of the bed.
At this point, I had a little gas and air [nitrous oxide] to cope with the contractions and was feeling pretty hazy. I just remember Emma in front of me, holding my hand, reminding me of my breathing. At this point, all was very calm.
Jen checked in with me about what I was feeling and how I was doing and popped out for a minute to check in on another mother. My boyfriend went to the car to warm up as the birth room was freezing (apparently) as everyone thought I had hours to go before birth as I hadn't even started to feel the urge to push yet.
However, as everyone left Emma looked at me and gently said, “It's just us now. You can relax.” As she said this, I can only liken the feeling to suddenly needing to poop. So I just followed my body and one push was the baby’s head and the second was her body and ta da! Emma ran around behind me and picked up this naked human – my newborn baby – off the floor. (It was certainly a bonding experience as she is also a close friend and the first person our daughter, Luna, ever saw!)
On hearing my baby cry, Jen raced in and she and another midwife moved me onto the bed and placed Luna on my chest. Emma went outside and knocked on the car window to let my boyfriend know he was now a father!
That is a very fast labor (under 5 hours) and to go to from 6 cm to birth in less than 2 hours! What was your mental state like in labor?
I was just super internal.
I apparently thanked everybody for coming and asked if they were hungry, but I really didn't have a sense of time or what was happening outside of my body. I was just breathing through each new contraction.
How did you best cope with the contractions?
Really deep, low breathing. Once I arrived at Del Mar and Jen suggested I hum to keep my breathing sounds low everything just seemed to click into place. I literally hummed through my whole labor.
There were a few times I slightly panicked and caught my breath but Emma just helped me through the next breath and then I'd be back on track.
What do you think contributed to your fast labor and birth?
I followed ALL of the advice: raspberry leaf tea, 6 dates a day, walked and walked. I also went to a chiropractor to make sure the baby and I were in the best possible alignment.
You basically had the most natural birth one can have - hands off and unassisted except with the help of your friend/doula who scooped your baby up moments after she was born. How do you feel after experiencing something like that?
It was sort of magical! It was the most accomplished I think I've ever felt and the most at peace – like everything was where it was meant to be.
What can you compare the experience of giving birth to?
Um, it's hard. But I guess similar to period cramps in so much as you know it hurts but it's not bad for you. But it was also euphoric and spiritual in a way I hadn't quite expected it to be.
Do you feel there were other events in your life that properly prepared you for the journey that is giving birth?
I'd say on the whole I'm pretty fearless of the big stuff (I'll worry about the small things, like saying the right thing or not being perceived in the right way.) But I lost my dad when I was 20-years-old and had quite a turbulent childhood – I moved to different countries, lived in 5 different cities and got married and divorced before 30. So I feel I'm ready for what the universe wants to throw at me!
Has your birth experience been influential within your community of women and expectant mothers?
Yes! I feel like I'm a little evangelical now in so much as I want to encourage all my peers to be less fearful and more positive in anticipating their experience giving birth. I've also become a resource on natural birth for lots of friends of friends and that feels really special to be able to help them make informed choices.
Some would say that giving birth is also a rebirth for the woman. How has giving birth changed or affected you?
It's made me feel stronger and braver for sure. Also, more in touch with my body as a thing rather than just for looks!
What would be your sage advice or wisdom to impart on other women and mothers?
We are made to do this and you are so much more powerful than you give yourself credit for.

What would therapy be like for a man (he's 25, not sure if that matters) on suicide watch in a psych ward/hospital? He lives in England, but I'm not sure if that matters either... He attempted to overdose but was found by his boyfriend and brought to hospital by ambulance.
It actually does matter, a lot! The British healthcare system is WILDLY different from the American one, and I’m not very familiar with how it works. Luckily, some of the Scriptshrink consultants have had experience with it! Their answers are after the jump.
CW: mentions of a suicide attempt, overdose, & medications
nothowiplanned
I mean my first response is that those circumstances absolutely do not guarantee hospital admission.
No NHS psych beds means they’d most likely give him physical treatment at hospital and then send him home after an assessment with the crisis team.
Crisis teams - at least in my part of the country - don’t like to be regularly involved in care for more than a few weeks so he would probably be discharged from them quite soon.
They might make a referral to adult mental health services but more likely they would refer him to IAPT - improving access to psychological therapies - who would put him on a waiting list for CBT*
*Is my bitterness showing :/
I honestly think the only way that character would end up in a psych ward in those circumstances is if he could pay for private treatment and I have zero knowledge about how that works.
Charlie
Alright, so first things first - it is difficult to be admitted inpatient in the UK. An overdose is not likely to result in an admission. Usually ODs are seen as “less serious” attempts, once you’re medically cleared you see the liaison psych team. Liaison will then decide the next steps, whether a person needs to be hospitalised or can be sent home.So for realism, I’d change the overdose to something else. BUT I said difficult, not impossible, so it’s not really necessary.
Then it would depend on whether the character was a voluntary admission or detained under the Mental Health Act - being detained in the UK is commonly referred to as being “sectioned” after sections 2, 3, 4, and 5 of the act, which outlines the legislation allowing a person to be detained.
https://www.rethink.org/living-with-mental-illness/mental-health-laws/mental-health-act-1983
As for the actual inpatient care, it depends. We don’t really call it “suicide watch” but instead “observations”. You have different levels depending on your need: 2:1, 1:1 arms length, 1:1 eyesight, 10 minute, 15, 20. 2:1 means two members of staff (usually psych nurses or healthcare assistants) are by the individual at all times. 1:1 means there’s one staff member with them, either within arms reach or in their field of vision, and 15-20 is minutes. Again, the amount of observation will depend on whether the character is there voluntarily or not. A risk assessment will be carried out the night of arrival and they will decide from there what level of supervision the character needs.
If the character is very high risk they may transfer them to an intensive psychiatric care unit, but this is unusual and is only if it’s believed they can’t even be kept safe with 1:1 or 2:1 constant observations. In IPCU, you don’t get much in the way of therapy - it’s all about managing risk and stabilisation first of all.
And again, you’re unlikely to get much therapy if you’re on constant observations, even if you can be in an open ward (aka not an IPCU).The actual schedule and therapy varies from unit to unit, but usually there will be group therapy, art therapy, occupational therapy and individual therapy. Each day starts with breakfast and medication, you have a morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack then dinner and an afternoon snack, then night meds.
There’s a ward round once a week where your allocated psychiatrist comes around and tells you how you’re doing and updates you on your situation. Here’s a pretty good example of an inpatient schedule:
http://www.fourwindshospital.com/about_four_winds/westchester/pdf_schedules/lodge_core.pdf
Snail
When I was 25 I was admitted into a psychiatric hospital in England following an overdose. I was admitted as an inpatient because I was already under the care of the crisis team, but still kept making suicide attempts (the other ones were a type that is perceived as “more violent”, although the last was an OD) so it became clear that I wasn’t safe without being admitted.
As Charlie said, the therapy that your character would receive in hospital varies a lot.
For “suicide watch” (observations), I was under 15 minute obs. The way this worked during the daytime was that as the nurses did their rounds they made a note on their charts when they saw me, and they would go looking for any patients who weren’t accounted for. At night, they shone a torch through the window in the bedroom door, waited until they saw me breathing/moving, and then would move on. I sometimes like to sleep with my sheet over my head, so that meant that the nurses would come in, pull the sheet off my face and shine the torch on me to check.
In terms of therapy, there was not much available. We didn’t have any group therapy or individual sessions, but there was occupational therapy - this consisted of the art room being open for an hour and a half in the mornings Mon-Fri, when patients could go in and do drawing, painting, or colouring. There was also a programme of activities in the afternoons or evenings - max one activity per weekday, lasting approximately half an hour - of things like bingo, a crossword puzzle, a quiz. These occupational health activities were all completely voluntary, and took very little time. Most of the time people were either in their rooms, or sat in the common room with the telly. I was determined to be a Good Patient™, so I did every single activity that was offered, but I was an outlier in that respect, and there were plenty of patients that one would only ever see at meal times - the rest of the time they sat alone in their rooms.
Being in hospital was a case of being under obs while they waited for meds to kick in - they were looking to stabilise patients rather than trying to heal them (inpatients are expensive).
“Review meetings” were the main point of focus for the patients I spoke to - at these meetings, led by the consultant psychiatrist, your case was discussed with you and bunch of other people (like representatives from other agencies), and decisions would be made about your medications, the status of your section, discussions about day release, etc. People basically spent their time waiting for these meetings, because these were the only times when we could find anything out about going home. One thing that was difficult was not knowing when the review meetings would be. I was lucky - I had one a week, but other patients had gone 2-3 weeks without one and without knowing when they could expect to be seen again (I expect that the nurses’ and OHs’ reports were part of the process for deciding if it was appropriate to schedule a review meeting - financially, it doesn’t make sense to gather all those people only to say “yeah, nothing needs changing, we’ll leave everything the same”).
Although I may sound like I am being negative in this reply, I know that I am extremely fortunate to have access to free healthcare, and to have access to interventions for mental health at all!

I was asked as a favor to drive one of the car and the car owner's home. The car I drove belonged to my good friend's neighbor. I received a speeding ticket during the drive to the neighbor's home (73 in a 65) PLUS no insurance!!! I informed the officer that it was not my car and that it belonged to the passed out lady in the back but he didn't care and decided to write me the ticket anyway. Now I've been told that I will have to pay for it ($988) plus my speeding ticket. I spoke with my good friend about it but the neighbor now refuses to go to court with me or write a letter at the least explaining the scenario.""

Now I called the other driver's insurance company after receiving the police report and was told that a claim has already been filed and an adjuster's name and number given. I have been ever since calling the adjuster and leaving voice-mails. Its about 3 days and I have left more than 8 voice mail but he does not call me back. Its getting frustrating and am unsure if thats their strategy ? How long should I continue this ? and How can I get him to attend and address my claim ? and what else are my options ? Should I go to small claims court ? Advice is much appreciated.

How much does it estimately cost for a car insurance?
Please don't give any stupid answers. All I want is to get an estimate because I have not got ANY ANY clue about it. You can just give a range like 100-200 pounds per [unit time]. Hint: I will get my car when I am 17 so roughly how much will it be annually/monthly? The most sensible and reliable answer gets 10 points for best answer.

Which car would be better for a 16 year old boy?
A 1984 chevette a 1987 Oldsmobile cutlass ciara or a 1986 NIssan 300zx? If anyone knows insurance costs for these and a teenage boy? I will be 16 next week and may get a car this summer and these are what i'm looking at they are 400-500 dollars each... The Nissan needs a lil work i think. The ciara needs front brakes checked. and the chevette runs but needs a lil work. All of these run and are not expensive. I saw other teenagers having like 20 g's but no I start working next week and will save up my own money to pay for these... No i will not be racing and don't care what anybody would think of me. I'm just asking which of these would be better suited for a teenage guy?

Why is my Auto Insurance so high?!?
I am 20 years old paying full coverage insurance on a 2011 Nissan Versa that I am making payments on. My Credit is middle of the pack and I've never had a wreck or a ticket. So, can anyone tell me why my insurance is twice as high as anyone I talk to with the same set up?!? My insurance company said that it was strange, but can't find out why it's that high and this is my 2nd insurance company. The previous one charged a little more. I've gotten quotes and they're either close to my monthly currently or are more. I am paying nearly 500 dollars a month... I hope someone out there can help me lower this insurance. Thanks ahead.""

How to find how much my car is worth for insurance purposes?
I was involved in a car crash, legally not my fault - but is still going to come off my insurance. The car is written off and I'd like to know what to expect the insurance company to offer me - and perhaps argue that the car is worth more if I can. Car was a Seat Ibiza 1.4S, Reg no. Y828 TGC. About 128,000 on the clock. In good working order. Five previous owners, part history for three of them. No visible rust. Small dent rear bumper. M.O.T. good for another 4 months. Have already tried a few online valuations, they vary so much I'm not sure they're much good to me.""
Wouldn't the PPAC (Obamacare) bankrupt insurance companies?
PPAC seems very similar in nature to the Community Reinvestment Act that played a role in the 2008 financial crisis. The PPAC requires insurers to offer the same premium (price fixing) to all applicants of the same age and geographical location without regard to most pre-existing conditions (excluding tobacco use). It also states that minimum standards for health insurance policies are to be established and annual and lifetime coverage caps will be banned. As a business owner, I don't see where the government comes to the conclusion that insurance companies could survive the price fixing and taking on such high risk liabilities. It seems like 2008 all over again, does it not? Wouldn't they get involved in something similar to what the banks did with derivatives since they were forced to take on high risk loans? It seems like the big focus on Obamacare is the part where people are forced to buy insurance. I don't think that is a big issue, the big issue is how can the insurance companies handle this? Am I wrong? I am going to do more research tonight.""
Why do we need car insurance?

""3-car accident, what will insurance do?""
I was in a 3 car accident, I was the middle car. It's stop and go traffic at a red light, the line is backed up a good way, and the person in front of me stops. I stop behind them, but the man behind me doesn't stop. He hits me and pushes my car into her car. His car seems to be flawless, the vehicle he knocked me into also seems unharmed, maybe a scratch on the bumper (it was like a jeep or explorer, so my car went up under hers a little) and the front of my car is a little messed up. The police will file an accident report, but while I wait, what can I expect? I'm expecting his insurance to cover the repairs to my car, because this was in no way my responsibility, he hit me into her, I was more or less a ragdoll vehicle. Yes, I hit her, but it's not because I'm a bad driver, I cannot control being hit into another vehicle during a line at a red light. And though it was never mentioned (I was a little shaken, my mind wasn't clear), I am almost certain he was on his phone because he was looking down and doing something when I looked back after he hit me. It's too late to mention that, but yeah. Got the registration and insurance for it 3 hours before I wrecked. Had the car a week.""

I've recently encountered my second hit-and-run instance, and unfortunately my car is somewhat expensive to repair. Refund on car insurance?
Basically i got my car insurance on the 21st may. And i payed the amount in full. I asked, when the documents ill be arriving and they sed with 5working days. But nothing came. I went on holiday on 5th june and i didnt come back until 15th july. And i find that my postbox is damaged and all my post went back to the royal mail. But i still didnt recieved anything from the car imsurance and because it was a renewal quote, i thought probably they dont need anything of me, coz they have already got my detail from last year and thats why i didnt recieve anything. And this was my first time i paid in full. So i thought they only need my signature when im paying monthly. Anyways i went through my spam mails outa curiosity and i find one email from car insurance that says that my car insurance is cancelled. I called them up, but they arent willing to reinstate a cancelled policy. Now im confused, whether i can get my money bac for the rest of the year or not. And if so, how much will they deduct etc. Ive not had any accidents or motor convictions for the past 3years of driving. And i cant find the cancellation policy on there website and i dnt have any paper work that explains it either. I know i can call up. BUt im curious, whether anyone knows about the idea behind this and how it works. Thanks x""

Struggles of a British Teen in Paris
So it’s 05:30 and I’m currently sat in my apartment with a messed up sleeping pattern due to rehearsals for a new show that I’m in, when suddenly I get this crazy idea to write my first blog post. When you live in the Disney bubble just East of Paris there’s not too much you can write about, so I’ve decided to go with how I’ve adapted to French living, and the struggles that came with it.
Whilst living in France has its pros and cons, one thing I strongly admire about the French people is their ability to often brighten your day with a simple “bonjour” or “bonsoir”. I can guarantee that if you’re walking along the street, someone will not pass you by without greeting you, something that would rarely happen in England. But whilst this can put a smile on your face, it can escalate VERY quickly with not one, but two kisses on the cheek. The dreaded ‘bisous’; between friends? Yeah, why not, go ahead. Someone who you pass in the corridor at work approximately once a week? Don’t you dare invade my personal space with your double cheek kissing, let’s stick with the kind “bonjour” because I can guarantee you will not want my Brioche coffee breath so close to your face at 8am. And whilst we’re on the topic of coffee, if you’re a coffee lover, don’t even think about moving to France.
Something I’ve struggled with a lot since moving to France is the ability to enjoy food without having to spend 20€ on it in Planet Hollywood. I completely agree with the buzz over French cheeses, breads, pastries and macaroons as such, but come on – somewhere where some minced beef moulded into the shape of a burger and named a ‘steak’ should not be on the list of ‘Cuisine Capitals of the World’. And those poor vegetarians and vegans, I take my hat off to all of you living in a country where the waitress looks at you blankly as she struggles to understand why you’d ever ask for a meat-free meal. Whilst I believe they struggle slightly on the cuisine side of things, they sure do make up for it with their champagnes and wines – I’m not even a wine drinker but when it’s between a 4€ 2L bottle of wine or a €14 double vodka and coke, the wine wins.
What would I like for Christmas? FOR FRENCH PEOPLE TO BELIEVE ME FIRST TIME WHEN I SAY "Je m'appelle Nicky”. Not Nicholas, not Nicola, NICKY. Please just take my word for it, it’s far too much effort to present a form of ID every time someone doesn’t believe me. I apologise for having modern-day British parents who thought it would be a good idea to give me an abbreviated name at the time of my birth. But, it does makes me laugh when people get confused over the fact that my one of my female friends is called Nicola when really, in France, it should be me. You know, because they enjoy overcomplicating every aspect of life; like masculine and feminine words. I understand when it’s used to describe something that has a gender, and whilst my job is to entertain and make people smile, when I’m just trying to get through my early shift by ordering a gallon of coffee, I’d rather the barista didn’t almost pee herself laughing every time I use the feminine translation.
Something I’d love is to live and work in a place where fax machines didn’t exist and instead they used (god forbid), computers and emails. But no of course not, I live in France and unless you actually want to be paid, receive healthcare or have a roof over your head then please be prepared to wait the length of time it takes for a pigeon to deliver your 10,000 page, badly-translated documents to someone who, I can guarantee, will lose them.
Whilst it seems like I’m hating life since I’ve ranted a hell of a lot in this first post, I have truly never felt so happy and content in the 19 years of my existence. Being away from home for such a long length of time can more often than not get very hard, but every so often you’ll come across a little touch of home, whether that be in the form of seeing a bottle of Newcastle Brown Ale on the shelf in Auchan, a Geordie family visiting Disneyland, or someone special, they will always give you a little reminder to keep going and enough comfort to keep you going until you’re able to return home.
The beauty of Paris and it’s surroundings aren’t too bad either, if you take it all in and dig deep enough, you’ll realise that it’s more than a city with an average wrought iron lattice tower and an (extremely) urine-smelling metro system; because on every street corner there will be a beautiful piece of architecture, fountain or garden that will truly remind you how lucky you are to be where you are, and give you more and more reasons not to leave.
So, one thing that 2016 has taught me? That we’ll always have Paris.
Happy New Year Everyone! Bonne année à tous!
Nicky
