♡ 1. i’m drowning; please save me: L looks at Yagami Light and drowns. There is no other way to put it. As the days pass and blend into weeks, L looks at Yagami Light sitting next to him, the harsh lines of his face creased and determined, and he swallows water.

great characterization, always makes me very emo, and is probably a pretty major influence on my writing. one shot. 1,817 words.

3. Our Bodies, Possessed By Light: L. Lawliet is a gifted photographer who believes he has understood the light and its secrets. Light Yagami is a young, unstable and slightly crooked model. Together, they kill time.

modeling and photography au. make sure to read all teh tags and warnings for this one; there’s nothing gross, but some potentially triggering subjects for some people are in here. multi chapter. 81,218 words.

4. Hearts and Spades: Which would you choose? Love or death? RaitoL, slight AU.

short but sweet piece featuring that classic fanfiction dot net era vibe, an emo-ass playing card metaphor (/pos), and a recounting of l’s death scene that made me sad over him all over again (also /pos). and also light being obnoxious, but it’s death note, so that’s usually a given, lol. one shot. 1,801 words.

5. Not Quite Drowning: Sometimes Light ponders happiness. L/Light

a short lawlight and light character study. i like it a lot, and i don’t usually like light, so that should tell you something about how well i think it’s written! one shot. 424 words.

♡ 6. Water, water, water: In the bath, they forget they’re a detective and a suspect; they remove these identities along with their clothes, layer by layer until there are only the handcuffs left. And them; facing the other in the eerie calmness of their bathroom.

At least, it’s how Light sees it.

i really love this one! make sure to read teh tags, as eating disorders and drugs are mentioned, for example. angst with a happy ending! one shot. 3,504 words.

♡ 3. Do Gay Penguins Go to Hell?: Too many New Year snacks bring about a family discussion between L, Raito and their daughter about healthy diet, common sayings and nature of good and evil. And gay penguins, of course. AU

a really darling kid fic, based on teh stupid, homophobic controversy over that adorable kids’ book about teh gay penguin couple. one shot. 3,791 words.

4. A Feeling: It's LxLight fluff! This takes place after Light was confined and lost his memories, chained to L. : D SO YUS. SOME FLUFF FOR YAH D: Hope you leik it :D

so,,,some of you wouldn't mind some fic recs so here's me recommending my favorite lawlight fics you probably have read before but i ramble about it anyway. here you go :

Soulmate AU where you stop aging at 18 until you meet your soulmate. I'd say this is my favorite fanfiction of all time. Seriously. Doesn't make me cry hard but makes me cry repeatedly. The emotions, the bitterweetness, the writing, the characterization, the yearning UGHH. It's just out of this world. Every morning I check on this fic in case it's not abandoned after all bcs I have more hope on an update of this fic than life itself.

white chocolate roses (completed) & romance (oneshot sequel)

AU where Light is a cardiologist and L is his terminally ill patient. I didn't know what I expected, but I did not expect crying so hard that i still cry sometimes when i think abt it. The characterization is AMAZING and don't get me started with the writing. If you can tell what's gonna happen just by looking at the description and you can't take heavy angst, I don't think this fic is for you (srsly if someone warn me i'd never read it). But the last paragraph of romance tho....

This is How I Disappear (completed)

Canon divergence where L wins and Light is executed. You might know about this one, as you should. It's a genfic, but holy shit FEELS. Pure pain and beautiful writing, amazing characterization and oh my poor little heart. Even the description of light's bedroom made me weep. The relationship between soichiro and light really hits hard. It also explores L's feelings towards light, and it's very very canon. Simply one of the best dn fanfiction out there, really.

Seeking His Hand (incomplete)

Historical AU where L is a gentry seeking Light's hands for marriage. Regency era hoes come get your juice. Seriously, I'd sell my left lung to read this fic for the first time again. It'll bring you so much happiness for being the most romantic lawlight fic ever, and is really good. It's in character as far as historical au can go. the sexual tension between this two oh my god I can't wait, this one is amazing.

Of Music (incomplete/abandoned?)

AU where Light is a stressed college student who loves orchestra shows and meets L, their relationship grows through every show they attend. There's a lot of complication but not too dramatic, it's like enemies to lovers and friends to lovers being mushed together perfectly. Very interesting and oh my god the sexual tension between them and the teasings...i can't even. Misa's only here for like 5 seconds but holy shit i want to marry her. Probs abandoned but you can see the last chapter as an ending or open ending at least.

sugar and pumpkin spice (oneshot)

The best lawlight coffee shop AU. Seriously, you'll love it. As you can tell, I'm a fluff person and this...this is my comfort fic. The one that makes me slam the table after reading and screamed "I WANT MORE OF THESE KIND OF SHIT". Really heartwarming, really sweet, probably not for everyone because of that, but it is def written for me.

Silver Bells (oneshot)

About L and Light spending a real fucking soft christmas day as a married couple. You know i have a certain weakness for ships being married AND christmas. It is a win win but very fucking underrated. I love that it still includes the kira past but don't specify the redemption (the way i love my fix it/happy canon divergence). This is just golden and domestic and soft and i cried reading and rereading it.

One Last Night (oneshot)

Divorce. That's it that's the plot. But oh it will break your heart, build it, and break it again. This one is just...beautiful. the wording...the characterization- the pain. I'm not feeling the best while writing this so...i dont want to explain further i ignore tw for this i almost say it's worth it but pls don't do that so just go read it yourself, it's 👌👌

Change Of Circumstances (oneshot)

Another comfort fic. About Light being a Wammy's kid, building a friendship with L over the years until they fall in love. Seriously, we(me) need more Wammy!Light. This one is just cute. I don't know what to say other than it's just sooo adorable how they build a really strong connection and then fall in love. Childhood friends to lovers isn't the best au for lawlight imo but this one nailed it.

Wedding Date (oneshot)

About L and Light in Sayu's wedding. It's romantic in a lawlight way yknow. I just can't describe it but this fic makes me feel good. I mean, what a dream, to be in a wedding date amirite? And damn the yagami siblings really love the english (yes im quoting a song).

Corta para o dia seguinte e eu estou casualmente mandando memes no grupo do zap. Até que ele me manda essa:

“Ei, IronLad, lembra o padre de quem tu falou ontem? Ele infartou e morreu hoje.”

Eu me senti horrível por rir naquela hora, porque não tinha como ser verdade. Mas era.

A note about Yagami Light: he slouches only when he is being watched. 

Alone, his back is ramrod straight at all hours of the day, his shoulders pulled cruelly into the sort of line that speaks of militant control. It is only when he becomes aware of being observed that he carefully curls them toward himself, pronounces it more in the evening and smiles tiredly at assertions of, “You look beat, Light.” 

Once in a while he slips, when his focus narrows to a single point or he’s especially distracted, and there’s a moment - a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment - when his body is one unbendable, unbreakable line. 

A note about L: he never blinks. It follows that he never misses one of these moments; he only files them away for later.

Sleep, too, eludes him. Sometimes he will slip into the dark void of complete unconsciousness for an hour or two and then slam back awake, shuddering with the notion that he’d been just about to put something together. 

Then, of course, he puts something together. Light says the chain chafes his wrist but doesn’t offer any further complaints on it.

After two days of the chain, a problem becomes apparent: Light sleeps. 

More specifically, Light talks in his sleep. 

Most specifically, Light talks about L. 

The talking never reveals enough information to form any sort of theory, just small huffs of breath and the occasional half-murmur of L’s name, but it sends L careening toward a question so dangerous it stops the blood in his chest. 

If he fell asleep, what would he say? Would he put some deep, vulnerable part of himself straight into the hands of the most prolific serial killer in human history without even knowing it? Would he speak his own name? Would he speak Light’s name?

And further, what is Light dreaming about? 

L has never put stock in dream psychology. It is a soft subset of a soft science, and consists mostly of conjecture and wanking, both of which L abandoned years ago.

Which, of course, makes his burning curiosity all the more concerning. 

A note about curiosity: L cannot recall the last time he was burningly curious about anything. Mildly so, yes. Detached interest, yes. But true, consuming, burning curiosity? An outlier so far outside L’s observable universe it is almost entirely alien. 

Yagami Light, too, is such an outlier. It stands to reason, then, that his alien curiosity would be regarding Yagami Light.

He resolves to let it go for now, but spends a disturbing amount of free time devoting his curiosity to it.

On the 5th night chained together, L still has not slept, and his body is approaching its limit. Light, outlier that he is, notices.

“Ryuzaki,” Light says, and L feels that foreign pang of disappointment  exclusive to Light using his alias, “You need to sleep.”

L waves him off. If he sleeps now, he will shut off for approximately 12 hours, which is not at all acceptable until he’s solved the case. If he sleeps now he will lose approximately 12 hours of surveillance, anywhere from 2 to 12 Kira killings depending on who is currently occupying Kira’s frustratingly nebulous power, at least 14 servings of strawberry cake, and no less than three instances of Yagami Light stretching enough for his shirt to ride up.

L dwells uncomfortably on that last thought for a moment and then shakes his head.

He’s not thinking clearly.

Light says, “You’re not thinking clearly. You’re exhausted.”

L resists the urge to stick his tongue out at him and adjusts in his chair.

A note about identities: L has never gone this long in the presence of another human, and so has never had to keep up the exaggerated charade of his own identity for such an extended period of time before. It is unexpectedly exhausting.

His back hurts. He wants to stretch out and sleep.

Light pokes him with a metaphorical stick.

“You’re not going to be any help if your brain doesn’t work, you know.”

It is a testament to L’s exhaustion that he doesn’t argue. He simply shuffles out of the room and drags Light behind him to go make himself a pot of coffee.

“This isn’t coffee, Ryuzaki,” Light laughs, sticking his finger into L’s cup. “This is engine sludge.”

A note about Light: he has been different since the end of his solitary confinement - freer, somehow. More…innocent. He laughs more, jokes more. It is almost as if he is a different person. He even seems to approach flirting, sometimes.

Light takes his finger out of L’s cup and sticks it in his mouth. L stares.

“Sludge and sugar,” Light amends.

L blinks and takes a sip of his coffee. It tastes sweeter than before, and raises all sorts of awful questions about the specific taste of Light’s skin.

A note about L: there is a 75 - no - 78.9 percent chance that he is slightly sexually attracted to Yagami Light. Which is a problem.

Contrary to popular opinion, L is not clueless about sex. In fact, he enjoys it very much when it benefits him, and has found he’s rather good at it.

The problem, of course, is that this is not the time or person, and also that the likelihood that Light feels the same is under 12 percent.

So he drinks his coffee in silence until Light says, “Come here, Ryuzaki.”

L’s stomach does something awful and he pauses with the cup halfway to his lips. Light smiles, and it’s so honest and sincere that it scares the shit out of L.

What are you doing, Light?

“What are you doing, Light?”

Light leans against the counter and tilts his head. He must know what this position does to his body, and his legs are far too long, and L has no control over his own thought processes and suddenly realizes how desperately he needs to sleep -

“I’m just gonna crack your back for you. It’ll help, trust me.” There’s that smile again. Different than before, so different that it almost makes L believe it.

“Why?”

Light huffs and says, “Because you’re going to cripple yourself crouching like that all day.”

Why do you care?

“Hm.”

“Come here and cross your hands over your chest.”

Is this how L dies? He sees four distinct possibilities: Light cutting his throat from behind him, Light smashing his head into the counter, Light slipping something thin and sharp around his throat and pulling, Light sinking a knife into his back -

No. No, if Light wanted to kill him with his hands, he would have done it already.

Yagami Light is Kira. He is 89.8 percent sure of this fact. Kira wants L dead. He is 100% sure of this fact. The only reason he is not dead is because Kira does not have his name. He is 100% sure of this fact.

L wants Kira dead. He is … 89.8 percent sure of this fact.

Only 89.8 percent? Why -

“Ryuzaki, stop thinking. It’s giving me a headache.”

I want to hear you say my name, L thinks, and immediately regrets it.

“I’m not able to do that, Light-kun.”

Light grins and says softly, under his breath, “I bet I could help,” and then raises his voice again to say, “For god’s sake, just come over here.”

“No,” L says stubbornly. “This is a perfect opportunity for you to kill me.”

Light rolls his eyes and sighs deeply, which is … not what L expects.

“You know we’re being surveilled, right?”

“I doubt it matters to Kira-kun. My name is the only one he does not know.” L takes another sip of his coffee. “After I’ve been eliminated it will be easy to deal with the rest.”

“Fine,” Light says, looking genuinely annoyed, and throws up his hands. “Fucking suffer forever, you idiot.”

L has never seen Light curse before. It is horribly, viscerally arresting. He wants him to do it again. He wants to make him do it again.

Light immediately puts his head in his hands and says, “Sorry. I’m really tired.”

L feels a stab of genuine guilt. In his refusal to sleep over the past 5 days, he’s forced Light to sleep in the rolling chair next to his computer, or on the floor, or sometimes slumped over the desk. 

In a moment of utter insanity, L walks over to where Light is leaning against the kitchen counter and crosses his arms over his chest.

Light raises his eyebrows and looks like he’s trying not to smile.

“You have to turn around, Ryuzaki.”

L hesitates. It sets off approximately 800 alarm bells in his head to turn his back to Light. It feels … wrong. Dangerous.

Exciting.

L turns his back. It thrills him all the way to his toes, so close to unbearable he can almost feel the hairs on the back of his neck standing up.

“That wasn’t so hard, was it?”

Light’s voice is far too close when he speaks, and L cannot see him, and three new scenarios flood his mind at once: Light could snap his neck with his hands - but that would require an inhuman amount of speed and strength and is far less common than it is depicted in movies, not to mention it doesn’t seem like Light’s style. Light could choke him to death, fairly easily as the way he’s leaned on the counter gives him the perfect leverage, and the thought makes L’s toes curl in a way that is decidedly unscientific.

The third possibility evacuates his head the second Light touches him, along with an alarming amount of his other thoughts.

Light wraps his arms all the way around L and leans back a little, whispers straight into his ear,

“Relax, Ryuzaki.”

Impossible. L can hardly breathe.

Something snaps like a branch and then three or four little cracks follow in very quick succession, and suddenly L feels his legs turning to liquid. It hurts.

“There we go.”

Light stops touching him and L immediately grips the counter top, spits out, “Kira.”

Light laughs, then stops. He stares at L with wide eyes. Was he always so short?

What is he looking-

“You, uh, you’re standing up straight now.”

So he is. He takes stock of his body: he can feel all his toes and fingers. That’s new.

Light’s cheeks are pink. That’s new as well.

L is possessed by a new burning question: Does this fluster Light because of L’s sudden height advantage? Does he feel angry at the possibility that L could be physically imposing? Or -

L steps very close to Light until Light’s back is pressed against the counter top.

“What are you doing, Ryuzaki?”

“Testing a theory.”

A note about physical arousal: it is nearly indistinguishable from fear in its physiological processes.

“What theory is that?”

L sees no reason to lie. “Whether you are afraid of me -”

“I’m not afraid of you, you absolute idiot -”

“Or whether you want to have sex.”

Light’s eyes get very wide. They are nearly exactly the same color as the  honey L sometimes puts on his fruit bowls.

“With you?”

“Yes.”

He puts his hand around Light’s wrist and notes that his heart rate is nearly double his normal baseline. Pupils: dilated. Cheeks: flushed. L finds that he likes this sudden height advantage very much.

“In case you are wondering,” L murmurs, and he must be delirious from exhaustion if he’s doing this, “the likelihood that you find me sexually attractive is just over 56 percent.” A significant jump from 12. He looks at Light’s mouth to see if he mirrors it - he does. “62 percent.”

J: this one has a little bit of everything: friendship, teamwork, sports, magical abilities, ~family~ (the main 4 are family don’t fight me on this), beautifully written characters, great storylines, a creepy ass clown,

J: um joshua personally recommended this so you should watch it. MC works in a detective agency that has staff with *abilities*. definitely lots of action. fun fact: the characters are named after famous people in literature and their abilities are named after their work! the first arc of season 2 is a personal favorite of mine

J: basically tells the story of a revolution against the current government. our main boy here, (sometimes douchey) lelouche pretty much leads the revolution accompanied by an ability he acquired- his geass. very mecha and has fighting robots action!!

J: this follows the story of saitama, who just wants to be a hero and save people’s lives. he’s bored because, well, he’s overpowered. you’ll get a lot of laughs here, definitely

V: Ghouls basically look like humans but their diet is limited to humans and coffee only (they can’t eat human food). The ghouls need to kill humans to eat but humans want to live so they fight back. It shows the story of both sides so you feel sorry for both of them lol…and so my boy kaneki just wanted to go on a date but his life turned upside down after that.

J: we’re dealing with the supernatural this time! my girl hiyori suddenly becomes involved with the gods, which is kind of awesome but also awful. also the gods are so very human in the sense that they cause so much shit. you probably don’t want them ruling your planet or something

[Death Note THE MUSICAL] splendid three-man talk! Kenji Urai × Hayato Kakizawa × Teppei Koike talk more about the charm of the production!

In 2015 Japan, the korean performance became a huge influence in driving director Tamiya Kuriyama and Frank Wildhorn who composed all the songs for the [Death Note Musical]. With new and inproved equiptment and apparel, the musical returns with a power-up. From the original works of Ohba Tsugumi and Takeshi Obata. So far, there's been the movies and drama series- it’s name is occasionally recognized even in foreign countries. As such, the series has become one of the representative icons of japanese entertainment. The story of light yagami who upon making a contract with a shinigami aims to use the ultimate murder weapon to be the god of the new world. The various values of life, justice, peace, familial love, friendship and so on will be questioned in this work. We have Hayato Kakizawa and Urai Kenji both playing as the main chatacter light yagami and on the opposition, Koike Teppei plays the genius detective, L.

The three, who came to Osaka, were featured in an exclusive interview.

-- The world of [Death note the concert] is further delved into through the songs sung. When you experience these songs again, do the memories and feelings (of the previous run) return?

Urai kenji : At the scene in which Light confronts L, I felt a surge of recollection like "Ah, thats right, this is how Teppei's L is like". To be able to finaly be in a room together with the other actor playing light (Hayato Kakizawa) is a pleasure I wasn't able to experience during the concert itself.

Hayato Kakizawa : Even though we were only given two days or so to praftice together, we familiarised ourself and got the hang of it almost immediately. During the very first performance, I practiced and practiced. Despite the fact that two years have passed, I could still enter the role.

-- During the first performance, it was a shock to see Koike Teppei as L singing Mr. Frank Wildhorn's song whole heartedly with an arched back.

Koike Teppei : Even now I still have the habit of hunching slightly when I sing, but there are also parts that I cant quite follow, so theres always this element of unease and wondering if I’m doing the best I can...isn’t that right? (laughs)

But it’s not just singing we have to do- we have to recite the lines as well. As such, I find that in the end it’s the best to walk in an L-esque manner rather than just normally while singing. The dimly lit setting also makes the production really cool.

-- Well, we've decided to play [ Death Note The Musical] again (round of applause) As seen in the title, this work covers on an extreme choice of "death" can be thrust upon (someone) so it was a suprise to see various dramas bring it to life. How do you feel about the theme of death in this work? 

Urai Kenji : Death is inevitable, no matter who you are. With the addition of a slightly fantasy-based item such as the death note falling into the hands of a regular high school student, I think it’s very manga-esque. But at the same time, in the rehearsal studio, Kuriyama-san (the director) constantly talks about "the discord between the youths of today" Because of the fact that the scenes are taking place at shinjuku station and the things shown are for the most part seen in normal daily life, it really evokes a feeling like "ah, maybe Light is really there". The feeling of nearing death, the subject itself scares me.

-- Indeed, the less realistic and more shock-factor based horror like "sweeney todd" and such are not as scary as those that are based from real things in life.

Teppei Koike : A notebook that can so easily snatch away a human's life- it’s a terrifying thing to portray! For light to think that he is justice, from L's point of view, I think he really has strayed from his path,

Urai Kenji : Yes, its rather arrogant.

Teppei Koike : It may be justice to him, but from L's point of view, he’s nothing but a criminal. I think that the reality of this should have been felt by the audience as well.

-- In terms of "the youths of today" that Kuriyama always mentions, I think Kakizawa is the closest to the generation of this musical's heroes. What are your views on this work?

Hayato Kakizawa : Young people are very bored even in this world filled with so many things. I remember that during the time of the premier, murders commited by young kids were growing more common and attracting attention around the world. The first chapter (of the manga) titled "boredom". The shinigami Ryuk was bored and light too, despite being in a world with so much to see, was bored out of his mind... Of course, the actual crimes committed and this work is not one and the same. However, Kuriyama says that the underlying meaning is not completely different. Through this stage play, perhaps a parallel will be drawn between the theme of "death" and "youth" in this present era The youth crossing during the shibuya scramble in the musical were all glued to the screen of their smartphones endlessly. The atmosphere and realism of it all brings out the realistic aspect. While the manga is the original, the play has a wonderful sense of realism now thanks to the magic of Kuriyama. To me, that is both facinating and terrifying.

-- Do you relate to the role of Light?

Hayato Kakizawa : Well, it’s definitely useful for the stage to think about killing L when he appears.

Kenji Urai : Well, the part that I live in japan is relatable...If it were anywhere else itd have a feeling of "who?" "where?" but since it takes place in japan, that part makes it easier for me to create a role.

1) Do you have any specific diet you go by? (Vegan, Gluten-Free, Paleo, etc.) i used to be pescetarian, but then the deficiencies it gave me caused some pretty bad dental / gum problems, so i started eating a bit of lean chicken and pork on the side again... (yeah i know supplements exist, but even my nutrition major of a friend thought a pescetarian diet won’t yield deficiencies, and also supplements are fairly expensive. get off my case)

2&3) Do you have any siblings? If so, how close are you? nope, i’m an only child

4&5) What’s your favourite book and why? (I might want to read it lol) hmm. i still really like 1984, it was the first dystopian classic i read and the concept of Newspeak, tampering with historical authenticity on such grand scales, etc. just blew my mind. so even though i still dislike its weakass character-writing (p much anyone besides Winston has no personality, no distinct personal motives, etc), it’s got a soft spot in my heart. next to that i also liked A Clockwork Orange for the philosophical discussion of the nature of right and wrong (although in hindsight the story is a bit didactic); To Live by Yu Hua (the ill-fated episodes and tragic ends are made all the more absurd by the subtle and simply narration style, but it really is a humbling and informative experience for us readers of a different era and socioeconomic background); and of course, my favourite fable, A Little Prince.

6) Would you describe your personality as dominate or submissive overall? what the fuck kind of question is this. well i’m opinionated as heck, so i’m not submissive “personality-wise”. and that’s all i’ll say on the matter because i’m p sex-indifferent lol, if that’s what this question was trying to get at.

7) What are your dreams usually like at night? oh man. i usually don’t dream normal dreams; as in, most dreams i have is either one big adventure / story, or some bizarre situation that would have been questionable at best, fucked up at worst, in real life context. when i start dreaming about mundane everyday life problems or situations, like failing a test or being stuck with a friend i’ve cut off from my life years ago, that’s usually when i’ve got some kind of stress going on in my life.

(i’ve been trying to restart my dream journal tag actually, but i got stuck on my second entry trying to recall the specifics lol. maybe i should release entry #3 from the drafts first.)

8) Is there anything you’re currently anxious about? well, yeah. my future. my job prospects. being homeless once my parents decide to sell their house off for retirement because the housing prices are through the roof here. pick one.

1. What kind of music do you listen to?

hmm, i only listen to really slow music or something dark or rock-ish, nothing in between!! muahahaha!! 

okay that’s generalising it; i do love The Honey Trees and The Novembers, which are on opposite ends of the “slow” spectrum (one’s dream pop, the other’s infused with shoegaze and other distortions + some screamy vocals and loud noises at times), with Lana Del Rey and her decadent sounds smack in the middle lol. but yeah i certainly have a taste for the more atmospheric stuff, so aside from the fuzzy feelings of The Novembers’ stuff and the grandness of Lana’s string instrumentals i also like the darker chill vibes you get from The Neighbourhood, some of The Weeknd’s older stuff, etc. 

and I also really enjoy MCR, Muse and the like - i.e. dramatic sounds, that’s the good shit to me haha.

i also like more conventional pop acts like Lorde... and my fave local singer, Ivana Wong, of course!

2. Do you prefer to keep your living space neat and tidy or do you like a certain amount of mess?

i do prefer order and routine in my life, sadly if i can’t do that on a structural level you think i can do that with my desk?! lol. in an alternate universe, maybe.

3. What was the first ship you remember really shipping?

hmm probably TerraxBeast Boy from CN’s Teen Titans. i was lukewarm / indifferent to other canon pairings i’ve seen in media up until that point; but i guess i was more persuaded by the storyline than their characterisations as looking back there are glaring trust issues in their relationship (and that’s an understatement)

4. Do you have a certain show or book series that holds a lot of nostalgic value for you? If so, what was it?

hmm, i guess Courage the Cowardly Dog? (i was a weird kid but shush) and Teen Titans of course. as for books, hmm... ASoUE is definitely one of the ones that just takes me back to middle school. i even bought the Beatrice letters files thingy. tbf the whole Lemony Snicket universe did teach me a lot about cryptography, which i guess if me or a friend of mine were to do an L rp and solve cases it would help a lot (*cough* not saying that’s what’s happening right now because i’ve got other stuff i’m investing my time into. i guess my friend’s gonna make themselves scarce as well hahaha *cue Mariah Carey’s i can’t read gif except it’s L*)

5. What is your favorite type of food?

Italian and Japanese are my fave cuisines! i guess that means i love richly-flavoured foods and creamy stuff. ooh, love those sauces.

6. Was there ever a fad or activity from your childhood that you could never understand or get into?

i wasn’t a gamer at all. we didn’t own a single console and i wasn’t allowed to get a handheld. the most i had was a Tamagotchi. so i guess it’s not so much i never got that ‘fad’, just that i was never given the opportunity to discover the really good games. i’ve only ever played a bit of Mario Kart or Cooking Mama on my cousin’s NDS so yeah. didn’t see the appeal in the more light-hearted games like that.

(now that i’ve played Undertale i’m kinda wanting to explore more PC games though. i heard Papers Please is good, and PJ (@kickthepj)’s been recommending Hyper Light Drifter a lot, and the art looks amazing, so yeah... too broke to get them though... and even if i had the money and time to play them i’d be allocating it towards other stuff you know?)

7. What’s your favorite time of day?

well i got 2 fave time periods. the first one’s the witching hours between midnight and early morning, when the world is quiet and you could do anything and nobody would know. the other one is early morning, just after sunrise, and the air is clear and slightly chilly, and it’s also really quiet but you can just hear the birds tweeting somewhere.

i’m more likely to be awake for the first time period described here though... ._.

8. What’s your favorite type flower and why?

hmm i'm not really a flower person. i’m just gonna steal Luke’s answer and say cactus flowers haha (well i do like cacti, they’re some of my favourite plants; i even named my IG/Twitter and Pokemon Go usernames after the plant; also some of you might remember that i had a pet cactus for 8 months)

9. What’s your favorite cliché/trope in fiction?

10. Did/do you do any extracurricular activities when you were in school and what were they?

(wow Luke that’s a lot on your resume!)

i did bits and bobs throughout school, but perhaps my longest commitment was my Clarinet lessons. started when i was in Year 2, carried on until i obtained a Pass in Grade 8 ABRSM certificate in Year 10. i had to quit and give up on a diploma there because i was starting the IB diploma programme in Year 11...

this commitment is only rivalled by the dance classes i took. i did ballet from a young age until i was about 12~13, quitting just before en pointe shoes were introduced; i had also been in Chinese dance lessons from Year 1, so after quitting ballet i just focused on that until Year 10 as well (again, quitting to focus on my full-time diploma).

i also did Taekwondo as a child and obtained a black belt qualification by age 12. i quit once i did though, because again i couldn’t afford to juggle so many commitments the older i got and the more demanding my studies became.

perhaps the proudest extracurricular i’ve done is in my senior years of high school: i started and chaired the student committee as the editor in-chief for the school’s first student-ran and seasonal (now monthly) publication. it’s not student-ran either anymore because i guess the kids that came after the classes of 2014, 2015, and 2016 just dgaf about slightly more demanding extracurriculars that require organisation as long as they can earn their credits elsewhere (yes i’m salty, i’m allowed to be okay, it was my brainchild but apparently kids these days don’t care about having their voices heard if it means having to negotiate diplomacy with the adults in charge. god, how do they expect to survive in uni or in a workplace?)

11. What’s your favorite piece of work that you’ve ever created and what about it do you love so much?

hmm. i think for sure the prose poem i wrote about Light’s death in the anime. idk, the flow and the imagery is just a good concentrated example of what i could be capable of given the right tone and context. (of course, i’ve been trying hard to branch out in genres and forms, so that sort of language isn’t always applicable. but yeah, it remains my fave as a showcase of my best writing abilities ^_^)

you know what, i’d trade for something as simple as better control of my own brain. i don’t care about mind control over others; i just want to be able to harness the best parts of my lightning fast thought processes and out-of-the-box thinking on my best days without being constantly tripped up by executive dysfunction like that on a metacognitive level.

i don’t have one, sorry! i was 4 when it aired on TV, so i don’t remember much from those years except the Sailor Moon t shirt i got courtesy of my aunt because it was all the rage back then... i’m sorry, but i have more vivid memories of Pretty Cure and Sugar Sugar Rune!

6.Do you prefer potato chips chocolate?

it is a good combo for sure! we are talking about Royce’s chocolate potato chips, right? (if you haven’t tried it get some next time you or a friend/family goes to Japan! we can buy it locally from like Citysuper or something, but i doubt they export it to any countries beyond East Asia haha)

7.What song makes you feel melancholic?

oh, Six Billion did last week. it left me feeling cold all over. an effect from the combination of the layered vocals and the instrumentals i guess. (is it in minor key? i’m sorry i can’t tell anymore, it’s been far too long since i’ve had any musical training. but if it’s in minor key it would explain why.)

there’s also some of the stuff off The Novembers’ catalogue... mostly 終わらない境界 from To (melt into), which was my daily commuting soundtrack at a time when i had brainfog on a regular basis, so yeah, anxiety and all that fun stuff :/

8.Which dn character would you invite to Spaceland(the amusement park)?

Sayu or Matsuda? they deserve a lot more than the hand canon dealt them. hmm maybe Rem too? but she wouldn’t be able to interact with a lot of the stuff there :/

9.What’s the funniest movie you ever watched?

i guess The Lego Batman Movie? i’m sorry i know i keep bringing this film up, but it’s comedic genius for a “kid’s movie”.

Blissey was gonna be my go to answer. she’s a tank, have you seen her? but is she really my fave mon? debatable. idk man. i really liked Vulpix/Ninetales as a kid... but dark and ghost types though!! okay i can’t choose, next question

i went to another poetry event last night and i met up with a friend i haven’t seen since September :P

Chapter One

Naruto regained himself. He was still groggy from being knocked out and the icky damp in the air didn’t help. There was a stinging metallic taste and his skin crawled as cold sweat trickled down his back. He groaned, spluttering through some phlegm. He was sitting down; they’d given him that luxury, whoever they were. Everything was grey, green and dark in the single light bulb’s feeble illumination. Dramatic effect, of course. He was in a cell of some kind. No - too big to be a cell. Perhaps a holding cell. There was s deep, distant but pounding murmur around him. Underground? Something about the air pressure felt off. By now, he could make out shapes, make out the corners of the room. Behind the light, a shadow stared at him. And it spoke:

 “It’s been a long time, Naruto.”

 He knew that voice; a voice like the eye in a storm. It couldn’t be. The shadow stepped into the edge of the light. Naruto saw him.

 “I should’ve known you were behind this, Batman.”

 “That’s no way to greet an old war buddy.”

 “Save it. You’re no buddy of mine.”

 “Naruto. I invited you here so we could talk.”

 Naruto erupted to a stand. “Invited? That’s what you call knocking me out and kidnapping me?”

 “I needed to show you something. I knew you’d say no otherwise.”

 “Hey! I’m retired. The war’s over and you’re not my commander anymore. I don’t have to take orders from you.”

 “Excuse me.” There was someone else here. A switch ticked and the light went off. Dark. Then another tick and the whole room went up. Naruto winced as his eyes stung. Grimacing, he peeked around and made out the figure better. A woman. She was wearing a lab coat. This must be some kind of secret R&D facility. Government? Or another of the Crusader’s pet projects. She was looking at him, patiently.

 “Who are you?”

 “I’m Dr Irene Adler. I’m the chief of ASAHI’s medical staff.”

 “ASAHI?” asked Naruto.

 Batman explained. “After the war ended, most of the former rebellious samurai were absorbed into Japan’s new government. The others established a republic in the north, in Hokkaido. ASAHI was created with the purpose of rooting out the remaining ronins, to stamp out the old order; hence, the Rising Sun.”

 “I’ve heard about you. You kill ninjas too. I didn’t believe it. So many of my old friends went missing. Missing or forced to become civilians. Told there was no need for ninjas in the new world. That we were an embarrassment.” Naruto paused. He turned to the doctor. “And you? Are you military?”

 “No,” she said. “Civilian. Part of the new CDC, a department founded by the US Government. I’m part of the US’ expedition here, to help modernise the new government here.”

 “Modernise?”

 “Yes. The Emperor has been clear in his aims. The past four years have seen small waves of Western diplomats to help inform government policy. With them have come a not insignificant task force of scientists, engineers, doctors, pedagogists and military officers to help the Emperor as he establishes a more centralised government.”

 “I can’t believe it. You’re taking over, aren’t you?”

 Batman assured him. “That’s not why we’re here, Naruto. We’re here on a mission. That’s why I brought you here.”

 “And where am I? Just where in the hell even am I?” Naruto bellowed.

 “A Kasatka class submarine, fifty miles off the coast of the Ryu Kyu archipelago.”

 “Kasatka?”

 “If it comes to the worst case scenario, we can’t have this being traced back to us.”

 “I see. You’re doing the government’s dirty work. Working in the shadows. A ninja killing ninjas. I can’t believe it.”

 “I don’t have time for this. We have a mission and you’re the only one who can do it.”

 “Why me? I’m not American.”

 “You fought with us once before.”

 “That was different. I didn’t know what we were fighting for, what the real goal was. I never would’ve joined you if I’d known.”

 “That’s still the goal. Officially, the war’s over but I haven’t hung up my cape just yet. The Five Kages were corrupt, Naruto. Deliberately instigating conflicts between daimyos to drive up demand for their services. The corruption was systemic. War was our last resort, believe me.”

 Naruto said nothing. He suddenly desperately needed to smell fresh air. To run somewhere.

 Batman continued. “There’s another reason I chose you.” Naruto looked up. “Terrorists have taken control of the ruins of the Hidden Leaf Village. They hijacked a US Marines tanker, headed for Tokyo for inspection. That tanker held a top-secret weapon that in the wrong hands could mean chaos for the whole region.”

 “Top-secret?”

 “I’ll explain this part,” said Dr. Adler. “During the war, The White House said that it would give its unfailing support to the Emperor in quelling the rebellion. But as it drew on, several generals expressed concern that perhaps we had backed the wrong horse. So, they developed a contingency plan in case the Shogunate won: a new, highly-advanced revolutionary form of artillery. A sixteen-cannon barrage, it could fire missiles up to heights just below the stratosphere. Armed with a hyperintelligent processing unit, the machine could take into account wind patterns, varying atmospheric pressure and seismic activity thereby calculating its trajectory with a margin of error of a mere twenty metres. In short, a weapon that allowed its user to attack without giving away its position. We called it . . . Metal Gear.

Low-level testing was already under way as the war was coming to a close. We’ve actually never got to see it operate at its full capabilities. If we did, outside of a conflict scenario - that many missiles? It’d surely make international news.”

 Batman joked, “If it were that many missiles, it’d make the weather report.”

 Silence. Dr Adler didn’t appreciate his attempt at humour.

 “Never mind that,” continued Batman. “Naruto, this weapon can’t be in the hands of a rogue nation.”

 Naruto frowned. He couldn’t. The old order might have been over but he still had his ninja code. He couldn’t refuse.

 Batman added, “There’s another reason why we asked you.”

 “Huh?”

 “The terrorists have an army of ronins and renegade ninjas. If this were a rag-tag group of mercenaries with a grudge, it wouldn’t be much of a problem. But they’ve been disciplined by their new leaders into a professional army, aiming to establish a nation-state not just for themselves but with the aims to reconquer Japan.”

 “New leaders?”

 “Yes. That’s another reason why we brought you. The people in charge of this whole affair are some of the most capable warriors from the old era. Light Yagami, with his powerful supernatural abilities. Bayonetta, the beautiful and deadly berserker. Mario, master of disguise. Mecha Godzilla, giant and humanity’s nemesis. And sans from Undertale, specialist in interrogation and a formidable gunslinger.”

 “Helluva misfit gang. I’ve met better. Too bad we’ll be meeting under these circumstances.”

 “One more thing: the person in charge of them, the sqaud leader . . . you might know her by her codename: Sailor Moon.”

 “My sister!?”

 “Yes, and you’re the only person who can stand against her.”

 “. . . She disappeared. All those years ago.”

 “Yes. She’s been AWOL for twelve years. Surprised me as well.”

 “No-one really knows her as well you do,” said Dr Adler. “You’re the only who can figure out what she really plans to do.”

 “What do you mean?” asked Naruto.

 Batman interjected. “There’s another reason we need you. The terrorists haven’t just hijacked Metal Gear. They’re also demanding two thousand tonnes of gold-”

 “Two thousand tonnes of gold?”

 “Yes. They’re also asking for the remains of a certain someone.”

 “The remains of a certain someone?”

 “Yes. The late Barack Obama.”

 “What!?”

 “That’s why we need you on this mission,” said Dr Adler again. “You have the skills, the knowledge, and the only one who can understand what she’s thinking.”

 “Huh.” What the hell was this, he thought. He hadn’t fully recovered but his head was sufficiently calibrated by now for him to see how crazy this all was. Had he missed something? He’d spent so long wandering after the Leaf Village was destroyed. Had the world changed that much while he was away? “Alright,” he moaned. “Alright. I’ll do it.”

 “I’m glad,” said Batman. “There’s . . . another reason I chose you.”

 “Another reason?”

 “When the terrorists first took over the ruins, the governor dispatched special forces to investigate. Half of them were wiped out. The other, captured. One of the hostages is my niece.”

 “Niece?”

 “Yes. The daughter of an old friend of mine. Her name’s Lyra. You’re the only one I trust to rescue her.”

 Naruto shook his head. His voice turned raspier than usual. “I’m . . . rusty. Spent too long wandering around. I’m not the ninja I used to be.”

 Batman clasped his shoulder, his face fully in the light, his eyes clear. “You are, Naruto. I believe in you.”

 Naruto looked away. “Okay,” he finally resolved. “One thing though.”

 “What’s that?”

 “I need scissors.”

 “Why do you need that?” asked Dr Adler.

 “Just gonna clean myself up a little. I don’t wanna be mistaken for the leader of the terrorists.”
