Sims 3 animated bedding tutorial

I've been working on this tutorial for quite a while now, and i figured i'd upload it for those who need an in-depth explanation on how to assign bones to beds so they animate properly However, i must note that i do NOT know how to assign 'bits' to beds, therefore that part of the tutorial is missing... You may be able to accomplish this if you try following Gruesim's tutorial found here, but it is not included in mine [the bit is the piece that stretches to cover the inside of the bedding]

Programs you will need: TSRW (i like to use the old version/portable) Milkshape 1.8 Blender (im using 2.7 but you can use any version) Meshtoolkit

-To start, let’s find a good bed to convert. Try to find something that has the blanket, pillow, and mattress textures all on one image, so you don’t have to re-map it. Try and pick a bed where the design isn’t too complicated, if it’s your first conversion.

-This is an example of a good bed to convert. The textures are all in one image, the polycount is only 2k so we don’t even have to decimate it, and it has a good blanket and pillow mesh.

Step One: [Exporting the mesh and textures in sims4studio]

-Open the bed you chose, and import it into sims4studio. Export the mesh, and all the textures into a folder. I usually name my texture files (1,2,3) and so on.

Step Two: [References to use]

-This is extremely important. Open TSRW and clone this specific bed

-Use either the single or double version. I’m using bed single modern, since I'm converting a single bed.

-Go ahead and export this bed as a .obj file in the mesh tab, as we need it as a reference to use in blender. Leave this for later, we’ll come back to it when we import our finished mesh.

Step Three: [Separating the mesh in blender]

-Open the .blend file you got from exporting your mesh. We are now going to separate the bed into multiple pieces (pillow, blanket, mattress, bed frame) and fit them to be the same size as the EA Bed.

-Separate your mesh by shift clicking verts, and pressing shift+ to select the entire piece. If shift+ doesn’t select the entire thing, you’ll have to select them all by hand. Separate your selected piece, by pressing P

-After your done, your mesh should be separated like this:

Mattress

Bed Frame

Pillows (i usually separate both of them if its a double bed)

Blanket

Step Four: [Shaping the mesh in blender]

-These shortcuts are going to be very important for this part.

Shift S → x (scales on the x axis) Shift S → y (scales on the y axis) Shift S → z (scales on the z axis)

-Go ahead and move the pieces of your mesh around until they closely align the EA Bed, so it animates properly

-This is what my finished mesh looks like

-Once your mesh parts are close to the EA counterparts, go ahead and export each piece separately.

-Be sure to give them the correct names (blanket, pillow, bedframe, mattress), so that you don’t get confused later. I usually save the .blend file as well, in case I want to make edits later, which you will probably have to do if something happens after you assign your bones.

Step Five: [Renaming files to the correct groups]

-This is where things unfortunately get a little bit tricky

-We’re going to be going both milkshape and Meshtoolkit quite a bit

-Import the .obj files from your bed, one, by one so we can rename them. They need to be renamed ‘group_base’ so we can assign bones.

-Export all files you rename with the same name, except add “merged” onto the end, and export them as a .wso file. The bedframe bones are going to be assigned when we import all the finished bones into milkshape, so you can export it as 'merged' but we aren't going to be using meshtoolkit for that one.

Step Six: [Assigning bones with meshtoolkit]

-make sure you have frankie’s EA bed mesh references

-Open meshtoolkit → Auto Tools for WSO, and uncheck interpolation, and make sure you have it set to ‘replace all bone assignments’

-WSO mesh to modify: your merged file

-Reference mesh: The EA reference of the same kind (IE, blanket)

-When it prompts you to save the file, save it over the existing ‘blanketmerged’ file.

-Once you’ve assigned the bones to the blanket, pillow, and mattress, import them all into milkshape.

-Side Note-

This is important, you will NOT have to merge all your groups if you are doing this for a DOUBLE bed. only merge all the groups if you are assigning bones for a single bed. For double beds keep the groups separate like how they are in the TSRW reference mesh!

-Go ahead and select everything, press the ‘regroup’ button in the mesh tab, and then rename it back to ‘group base’

-do this for everything EXCEPT the bed frame. we will be assigning the bed frame by hand.

Step 7: assigning the bed frame bones

-Since you've got your bed pieces all grouped together and renamed group_base, go ahead and import your bed frame file.

-Go ahead and 'hide' your bedding in the groups tab so we can only see the bed frame mesh. go ahead and search for the specific bone labeled "0xCD68F001" in the joints tab. once you have found it, go to the model tab and click "select". 'alt shift right click' to select all the verts of your bed frame mesh. go back to the joints tab and click assign. your bed frame bones have now been assigned.

go ahead and "regroup" the bedframe and bedding as one group.

Import your mesh into the tsrw project we made earlier, import your textures and you should be finished.

she could see the look of horror on trevor’s face the second he pulled her name from the baseball cap in the middle of the living room of the hughes’ summer house.

while the group of them had a few weeks to be here without the supervision of jack, quinn, and luke’s mom and dad, they decided to throw a party.

y/n had been close with the brothers her entire life, originally having been given quinn as her ‘guardian angel’ in elementary school, a program where kids in the third to sixth grade would be given the responsibility of sitting with the kindergarteners on the bus since they lived nearby.

that tradition stuck with them, having sat together in the years they went to school with each other up until quinn got to highschool. being luke’s age, she was over at the hughes’ home a lot, and their parents almost saw her as a daughter. she always went to the lake with them in the summer.

when each of the boys were in their respective years of world juniors contention, the friend circle just kept growing and growing, and now there had been a hoard of them taking a trip down to michigan every summer for a bit of free time before the new seasons started.

this had been the first year the party had gone from just people in the group to the house and backyard being almost completely packed, courtesy of raya and each of the boys telling everyone to bring their friends.

in the living room, a couple dozen people were playing spin the bottle, but instead of a bottle was a hat full of everyone’s names.

trevor was greatly regretting that suggestion, originally having thought it would stop people from cheating and would cause more drama. boy was he right, in the worst of ways.

none of the hughes brothers were playing the game, but he could still almost feel three pairs of eyes boring into his soul from wherever they were in the house as he nodded to her and they made their way to the designated room for the game.

“you look like you’re about to cry, z” he looked up from his lap and scanned her, shaking his head.

trevor had always kept his distance from her, usually opting to pair with someone else during party games or go for the option that she hadn’t been part of entirely.

they hardly ever spoke, but she wasn’t stupid. all he would do was stare, aggressively, right at her until she caught him and then he’d pretend like it never happened. she felt like she was harbouring a middle school hallway crush again.

“no, it’s just i don’t want to fuck up our friendship, and there’s quinn and luke. probably jack, too. they’d murder me, and-” she chuckled, ruffling his hair and sitting down on the bed next to him

“you don’t need to make excuses, trev. if you don’t want to do anything that’s fine” he looked at her with wide eyes, mouth opening and closing like a fish while he tried to string together what he wanted to say in his head

“no, no. oh god, thats not- i do want to, y/n/n, that’s the issue,” he stopped talking, feeling like he was just gonna upset the both of them if he continued, and she raised an eyebrow.

“i get it, trev,” they sat in silence for the next five or six minutes until someone came to let them out of the room, disappointed to see the two of them were just sitting around. after all, that wasn’t the point of drunk party games.

the next morning was even worse for trevor, because not only was he rethinking the entire conversation in his head way too hard for way too long, he was also nursing one of the most powerful hangover’s in his lifetime.

everyone was kicking out people who had fallen asleep on furniture or around the yard while also trying to clean, and he was being uncharacteristically quiet and helpful.

“trevor. do we need to talk?” she wasn’t expecting to have to talk to him about anything that happened last night, he was drunk and she figured she handled it maturely enough while it was happening, but she immediately noticed he was off.

“please,” she nodded, pulling him over into the same empty room as the night before and looking at him expectantly, waiting for him to talk first.

when he didn’t, she rolled her eyes and gave him a kiss, wrapping her arms around his shoulders and looking up at him so maybe he’d just say something.

“I shouldn’t allow myself to get this close to you” was all he said, the only thing going through his brain is how colossally screwed everyone would be if he fucked it all up.

“oh my god, trevor. who gives a shit what quinn wants, or what could happen. if you want me, just say it” he finally looked her in the eyes and nodded slightly, wrapping his own arms around her the way she had.

“you think more critically than i thought you would,” she mumbled, connecting their lips again and feeling him smile against her, turning to face the bed and backing her against it til she fell onto her back.

his hands slid under her shirt, lips moving to her neck and she smiled.

“you gonna fuck me like you should’ve last night?”

“would be stupid not to, huh?” she laughed, nodding and pulling his lips back down towards hers.

Alright, I’ve slept on it; here’s my proposal:

So the main issue I have with the QWERTY layout is, it disperses the letters over just about every gear. This increases the amount you need to move the gearstick to type letters. To counteract this, I’ve looked at letter frequency (a quick glance on wikipedia to see what the rough figures are, but I figure I can trust it), and I’ve come up with a new layout. See below...

It doesn’t look as pretty as yours because I basically rigged this up with discount Excel, BUT broadly it works like this:

Gears 1, 2, and Neutral follow more-or-less the most frequently-used letters, to minimise movement when typing. There’s some deviation - mainly becuase wikipedia also helpfully gave the most common letter pairings, which I tried to accommodate within first gear as much as possible. Without moving the stick at all you can type the pairings TH, HE, AN, RE, ER, AT, EN, and TE, which are all commonly used. It’s not all of the most common pairings (because that would be too many letters) but it includes the five most common, among others.

(The one change I might make is swapping the “A” and the “R” in first gear, so muscle memory picks up the “vowels on the right” thing whilst typing and you don’t need to hunt for it)

Second gear takes up the next-most-frequent letters (O, I, S, D, L C), with less focus on pairings - most letter pairings use one of the other vowels with one of the consonants in the first gear, so it was more about making sure those are easy to reach from first gear.

I moved the middling letters (U, M, W, F, G, Y) to neutral, to reduce movement - you can go from first to second, then back up to neutral if you need a “U” or a “Y”. Incidentally, this brings us down to the letters whose total frequency is less than 6% put together. As it also leaves us with just 8 letters, I’ve divided them into two gears - fourth (P, B, V, K) and fifth (J, X, Q, Z) - because they’re used infrequently enough that I feel punctuation takes precendence. Four each, to preserve muscle memory.

(Incidentally, change 2 I might make is swapping “Enter” for the “~” / “\” key on third gear. I just think Enter will be used more than either of those symbols in most cases)

Finally, you have numbers with mathematical symbols on sixth gear and reverse, along with mathematical symbols. I’m a little less happy with this - with only six keys for each, I didn’t have much room to play with, and I don’t like how 9 and 0 suddenly move to the bottom row, leaving the rightmost keys for punctuation, as it feels like it opens things up for error. But it didn’t look right with 0 alone on the middle row, so I’m leaving it as-is.

With regards to punctuation, I don’t know how much control you have over moving symbols, but I’ve tried to pair it off so similar punctuation is with its pair. Thus comma is the shift of full-stop, question mark and exclamation mark are together, and you’ve got both quotation marks on the same key.

Anyway, this was weird. It’s an interesting way to look at design and layouts, and I liked trying to figure out how to make your keyboard move better. I’d be interested to see if it works, but also let me know if I missed out anything.

Behold! My latest Bad Keyboard, the ShiftKeyBoard!

It's got nine buttons, and an 8-way gear shifter. You simply shift into different gears to select which sub-keyboard to use. Surprisingly easy to use, in fact.

Here's the layout I used:

Two more things:

1. the numbers under each gear position image are an implementation detail for the gearshifter I used, which I had on my guide image to help me code it.

2. the funniest thing I discovered is that you have to shift into neutral before reprogramming the keyboard or it wouldn't work right. I kept leaving it in first gear which caused problems, where it would only recognize 1 and 4th gear.

E-40 : On The Case

One of the hardest-working men in Hip-Hop, E-40 has recorded twenty-six studio albums, and still sounds as dope has when he debuted back in 1992. This is from his sixteenth, the second in the "The Block Brochure : Welcome To The Soil" trilogy, and as the prisoner quoted in the hook says, it does indeed slap! Chris "THX" Goodman gives him a dark, stomping beat which is a perfect backing for 40's flow as he gives you some free game. Whether you're facing a case or just a tough week at the work, I hope this helps!

Lsdream & Z-Trip : Space Funk

Giving exactly what it says on the tin, this tune is heavy instellar bass business. Z-Trip is better known to many of us as a turntablist and DJ, but his collaboration here with the former Brillz is a beautiful slice of bassy, floaty, vocoded production goodness!

Semi Six & Ilajide : Too Code

Going back to the "Park Orange" collab between these two Detroit natives, we have bump in abundance on this one. If one part of the track stands out, it's the fact that clearly, the roads in their neighbourhood and those in Manchester have a lot in common. Don't ride your 23" rims round here, for your own good!

Karl Hinds : Don Gramma

Twenty-two years on, some of these terms may have been superseded, but you get the point! Essentially the UK (or London, at least) version of Big L's underground hit "Ebonics", Karl runs you through a selection of the local slang, and handles the squelchy, bassy production on top of that. I'd only be half-surprised if it turns out he did the 12" cover design too...

Bumpy Knuckles ft, Sy Ari Da Kid : Word

It was a struggle to find a tune to fit into this spot, but I'm pleased with the choice - very much a deep cut from Bumpy, taken from the now ten-year-old "Mix Files, Vol.1" EP, which seems to be little hard to find nowadays. In fact, it's not even listed on his Discogs discography at present, which makes me wonder if that's just an oversight or if it was actually some kind of bootleg! Note : Feburary 29th does come, just infrequently...

Rich The Factor & DJ.Fresh : White Party

I've been playing this one in the car so much over the last year or so, it's about time it made its way onto the show! Kansas City's incredibly prolific Rich The Factor isn't coming with particularly complex bars, just vibing to the 80s-flavoured beat from DJ.Fresh from their edition of the "The Tonite Show" series, sampling a great bit of jazz-funk to great effect.

Tavaras Jordan : Photogenic (Instrumental)

It was great to see a complete instrumental release of Le$' "E30" LP, which was produced by Tavaras Jordan, who is rapidly becoming a personal favourite. Smooth synth and drum machine action with a lot of polish. Definitely one to hear in the car!

Slum Village ft. Phife Dog : Push It Along

Marking the anniversary month of Phife's passing, I thought I'd share a track of his you may not know. The circumstances are beautifully circular - Phife, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Q-Tip make up Tribe. Q-Tip puts J Dilla on as part of The Ummah, a production unit that worked on the later Tribe albums, which ultimately gives a boost to the early career of Slum Village. Years later, Slum Village, after the passing of J Dilla, bring Phife of Tribe in for this feature - named after a track from Tribe's debut. You can find this on Slum's "Yes!" LP, with Young RJ representing lovely on production.

ILLAMAN & Pitch 92 : Sometimes Relax

Great new single out of the UK, with ILLAMAN (all caps?) of Pengshui flowing over a Pitch 92 instrumental that is built around what sounds like reversed strings, wrapped in warm bass and a suitably-relaxed drumline. As the song says, sometimes we all need reminding to take a breath. Great to hear Pitch continue to build on his early catalogue with Plato and The Mouse Outfit, consistently releasing high-quality music.

Kardinal Offishall ft. Glenn Lewis : The Naked Truth

This one from "Kardi Gras Vol. 1 : The Clash" went down well on a Twitch stream recently, so I thought I'd finally include it on the podcast for all the subscribers! It's an all-Toronto affair, with R&B vocal master Glenn Lewis adding the perfect accompaniment to Kardinal's loverman lyrics with a hook that I think really makes the track.

Chris Mazuera : Inspiration (Statik Selektah Remix)

NYC's Mazuera was already onto a winner with this track from his debut LP "Let's Take A Trip", but getting Statik Selektah to remix it lifts it to an even higher level. It's still subtle and considered though, with Statik not overwhelming the original, and making it very much a joint piece of expression.

Benny Reid & Havoc : Temperature's Rising

Tracks from this combination between the jazz musician Benny Reid and Hip-Hop production legend Havoc have been trickling out over the last couple of months, and this version was one I was especially glad to hear, with the original "Temperature's Rising" being a personal favourite from the classic Mobb Deep LP "The Infamous". An all-instrumental remake, it of course derives from "Where There Is Love" by Patrice Rushen, but works in a live version of the boom that made the Mobb track such a killer.

Alaskan Fishermen : Fire & Ice

No hook, no radio appeal, no R&B affectations, just aggro underground rawness. The MCs build the lyrical structure in extremely short four-bar blocks, taking turns in trying to spit the most killer lines before passing to the next man. The final cut on Thirstin Howl's "Brooklyn Bullet Goldcard Membership" 12", the dramatic production brings exactly the right vibe.

Will.I.Am ft. KRS-ONE : Take It

It somehow feels wrong that KRS isn't officially the headline artist on this track, but aside from the hook, he is the only one on the mic! This 12" really deserved an airing after it made it into my digitised collection, as I realised that very few people have heard it. The beat is an interesting one, with the timing/programming being a little "off" in a way that makes it hard to mix with but also gives it the hard-to-place feel, and the hardness can't be denied. "Where Is The Love?", this is not.

Ras Kass : TV Guide

Dopeness from the eventually-released "Van Gogh" album, Ras takes inspiration from tracks like GZA's "Labels" and "Publicity", folding the names of dozens of TV programmes into his verses, while simultaneously making a critique of the medium itself. There's an alternate version with very different production courtesy of Carlos "Six July" Broady on the 12" of "Tha Dopest", if you can find it!

Pharoahe Monch : YAYO

The transition here is so swift that you might miss it at first, but we hand over from Ras to Pharoahe with the quickness for a fierce cocaine-themed cut (no pun intended)... Lee Stone's guitar-laden production on this single is heavy, and it's all topped off with some exceptionally sharp cuts courtesy of Boogie Blind of the X-Ecutioners - not seventeen-click flares or anything, just absolute mastery of the fundamentals and great scratch composition.

[Le Damus & SLA] Kwest, Gauge, and Eddie Broke : 718 (Instrumental)

This isn't even my favourite cut on the "Get Large Productions" 12" (that would be the mighty "Get Large"), but the horn-laden production on this instrumental would easily cut the mustard as an A-side on another release!

The Notorious B.I.G. : Real N****z (Do Real Things)

Excuse the sound quality as I share a piece of history - a legendary entry in Biggie's unofficial catalogue that you may never have heard if you're a little younger than me! This is drawn from the "Best Of Biggie" mixtape by Mister Cee, who of course was a critical figure in Big's early career. Sadly ironic given the eventual drama that played a central role in his premature death, the soundscape is pure California, with Biggie freestyling over the instrumentals from some of the biggest West Coast classics of the era. RIP.

Please remember to support the artists you like! The purpose of putting the podcast out and providing the full tracklist is to try and give some light, so do use the songs on each episode as a starting point to search out more material. If you have Spotify in your country it's a great way to explore, but otherwise there's always Youtube and the like. Seeing your favourite artists live is the best way to put money in their pockets, and buy the vinyl/CDs/downloads of the stuff you like the most!

I see a fan open and close, and that fan rotates so when it’s closed it idealizes to the invisibility of the z-axis so it thus idealizes to szK), and it opens into and as x-yK. That’s a better analogue in notation than x,yK, which lists, because x-yK is grid squares mapped to a coordinate grid of x-y regular squares.

So I can see Triangular make a diamond from the perception receiving End, that which identifies as yourself when the ‘invisible’ End’, typically the one closest extends to you. And thus into you, from the edge of your perception, like the individual parts of a large crowd are distinguishable only as parts of a large crowd, especially at a distance, to the most compelling, intimate experiences, which is connecting fan to fans because it’s the same opening and closing, because each one of those connects the line on the Register of Actualities to the larger meanings associated with it in grid squares and thus within the Dimensional Enclosure.

BTW, I started this fantastic work by saying you never loved me. This is what that sparked. That’s all it took. That and the return of weird dreams about apartments. This one devolved into my first, time to go to the bathroom dream in years, this time involving some weird toilet design that couldn’t take toilet paper and thus was clogged. It was gross but not as disgusting as might be because I deal with the litter box. The apartment seemed to made of concrete because sounds could be heard, with people talking in one room, but they were muffled even though there were no doors between the main rooms. I used to have many dreams about interiors, some many times, and I’ve always wondered where those come from and whether I’ll see them and when.

This seems to have been sparked, in turn, by me going through N621MM to identify patterns. Like that N is 14 and 14-6 is 8, and 6-2 is 4 and 2-1 is 1, which all add together to 13, and M is 13, so three 13’s, one constructed. And this one, 6*14 is 84 and 2*84 is 168, which leaves 1, and 13*13 is 169. So multiplying within the first 13 generates an attachable structure which equals 13 square, which is also MM. And this one: Lorali Li, pronounced Lee like the Lie Algebra is, coming from the MerMaid, maiden who emerges, the goddess of the water, of life, because she contains the fluid of life which surrounds the newborn (both literally and figuratively). And Lorali is a long i, and that Triangulars over the short i to the long ee sound for i, which is that short i sound held and dropped in pitch. So, when I order these, the long i is highest, then over the short i to the long ee sound. And Lorali Lee is Marilyn Monroe, which connects to all the doppelgänger photos, and the way you always emphasize your legs translates from how she always emphasized her bust.

It’s a lot like one of those cootie-catchers we’d make in 3rd or 4th grades, with different things written on the leaves. The process would generate a result depending on the pathway, even though the Ends were pre-written, and thus only interesting for a time or two.

In other words, because of the fan idea, I can see the abstract geometry, and that connects the grid squares structure - I’m much more comfortable using grid squares than IdT, because IdT is still open-ended in meaning while gs refers to anything having to do with Dimensional Enclosure at D4, meaning three dimensional objects within the enclosure which is ordered by the concepts of time and distance, with the latter emerging out of the generation of physical existence into a grid square meaning rules emerge about sets and what is discrete versus what is not, what is union and what is disjoint, and what occupies a space and to what extent that occupancy is shared versus not-shared, which carries all the way in to physical intimacy, to bearing one inside the other, and back somehow to Isis, who is the restorer of life, meaning a view of creation in which the woman is the active restorer of life in each generation, which fits with how traits mix, meaning the woman takes the male’s traits and mixes them with hers to actively make, to reconstruct, to build again, new life.

Story is down below!

You had paid a visit to Madam Scream’s in order to pick up some macarons. Barbatos had been kind enough to help you cook dinner for the brothers a few days prior, so as thanks you had ordered macarons as a gift. The butler had been quick to thank you, though he returned two of the four packages that you had given to him.

“There is no need to give me so many,” he told you, smiling slightly. “Perhaps you can put these macarons to better use.”

His words were the reason why you now were sitting alone in your room, eyebrows furrowed as you finished up designing the last macaron. You stared at macaron Belphie’s face as you added a small letter “z” near the top of his sleeping head.

Satisfied with your work, you placed the macaron down on the platter. The faces of the six other brothers stared up at you, ready to be given to their human counterparts.

“I sure hope they enjoy these…”

It wasn’t surprising that you ran into Beelzebub as you stepped into the hallway.

“Oh, Beel!” you exclaimed, and you were quick to pick up his macaron. “Perfect timing! I have a little surprise for you.”

“Mmph?”

He was munching on a cheeseburger, giving you a curious look. While one hand held the food item to his mouth, the other was holding a plastic bag. It was filled with more cheeseburgers.

You held out the small dessert. “Here! I designed it just for you.”

His eyes widened, and he was quick to finish his burger before taking the macaron from you. You half-expected him to quickly eat it in one go, but to your surprise he simply stared at it. It looked so tiny in his hand; Beel’s hand, though large, held the macaron gently.

“It looks delicious,” he said. He gave you a bright smile, eyes closing. “Thank you, (Y/N).”

His smile suddenly disappeared, looking a bit sad.

“It really does look delicious,” he said, staring at his macaron self. “I want to eat it, but you worked so hard to make it…”

“I can make you more if you want, Beel.”

He perked up at your words. “Really? In that case…”

He ate the entire macaron in one bite, a pleased look on his face. You laughed at his actions, happy with his satisfied expression.

“Thank you, (Y/N),” he said. You noticed that he was staring at the plate in your hands, violet eyes focused on Belphie’s macaron in particular. “It tasted delicious.”

“I’m glad you think so.”

He had bent down slightly to take a closer look at the macarons, and you took this as the opportunity to go on your toes in order to press a sweet kiss onto his cheek.

“I’ll see you, Beel!” you said, giving a small wave as you left to find another brother.

The Avatar of Gluttony simply waved back, a happy smile on his face and a slight blush now on his cheeks.

“You captured my beauty perfectly!”

“That’s a relief,” you chuckled. “I was worried for a moment, actually. Your beauty was almost impossible to capture, Asmo.”

Asmodeus had been in the middle of doing his usual self-care routine when you had popped into his room to give him his macaron. He held the small treat up right next to his face, eyes sparkling.

“You did well, (Y/N)!” he praised. He had a green face mask on, and you had to hold back from bursting out laughing. “It looks just like me~!”

“It really does,” you said, and you had to cover your mouth with a hand. He looked so happy, yet the face mask was making it difficult to stay serious. “As breathtaking as always, Asmo.”

“Oh, you flatter me!” The brother took a napkin from nearby, placing the macaron on top of it. “I’ll eat this later. I want to take selfies with it when I’m done with my beauty routine.”

“Alright.”

You giggled as he pulled you into a hug, pressing a quick kiss onto your cheek. The cool feeling of the face mask touched your own face, a slightly sweet scent meeting your nose. It was nice.

“Join me tomorrow night,” he said, his voice a bit musical now. “I was given this new self-care kit, and I want to try it out with you.”

“Of course, Asmo.”

You waved him goodbye, the sound of his humming disappearing as you began your search for another one of the brothers.

Your voice was hushed as you poked Belphegor's cheek, calling out his name. You had found him in the common room, fast asleep on one of the couches.

“Belphie?”

You gave his cheek another poke, and his eyebrow gave a small twitch. You gave him another poke, and he let out a small noise.

“Ngh… (Y/N)...” He was drooling now, hugging his pillow as he lay on his back. “(Y/N)...”

How cute, you thought, staring at him before looking at his macaron. Macaron Belphie and real Belphie are both asleep. Should I just leave it here?

As if reading your mind, the Avatar of Sloth suddenly rolled over, grabbing your wrist. You let out a small yelp, caught off guard by how secure his hold on you was.

“(Y/N)... maca… ron…” He trailed off, his words now replaced with light snores.

“Belphie…”

Your gaze on him was soft as you slowly removed his hand from your wrist. You held his hand for a little bit, your thumb gently massaging the back of it. He seemed to relax even more at your actions, as if comforted by your touch.

“I guess I’ll leave your macaron here,” you said, replacing your hand with the macaron.

Even in his sleep Belphie seemed to understand; his fingers were careful to curl around the dessert as you positioned his arm so that he was fully hugging the pillow again.

You slowly got up, but not before brushing away the male’s bangs and pressing a soft kiss onto his forehead.

“Rest well, Belphie,” you whispered, your fingers brushing through his hair one last time before grabbing the macaron plate and leaving the room.

The faintest trace of a smile now decorated his lips.

“Uh… is this a bad time?”

You had walked into Mammon’s room, only to be greeted with the sight of him holding Goldie up to his lips and mere centimeters away from kissing the credit card.

The second-born was quick to panic. “(Y-Y/N)!” He hid the card behind his back, sweat forming at his forehead. “Didn’t anyone teach ya’ how to knock?”

“Your door was open, Mammon.”

“W-whatever!” His tan cheeks were flushed red. “What are ya’ here for, anyway?”

You approached him so quickly that he had to take a step back. You held out a macaron, and upon seeing the design his cheeks became even more red.

“I made this for you, Mammon,” you said. “Here.”

With slightly shaky hands he took the sweet from you. “Stupid human,” he grumbled, staring at the colorful item. “You didn’t have to, ya’ know.”

“I wanted to, Mammon,” you said. “You deserve it.”

Though he was unable to make eye contact, he wrapped an arm around you and pulled you into a hug. He smelled of expensive cologne, you noticed, and the quick press of his lips onto your cheek caused your eyes to widen just ever so slightly.

“Stupid human,” he mumbled, his lips moving against your hair.

You two stayed like that for a few more seconds, and you glanced up to see him admiring the macaron. He had a smile on his face, blue-yellow eyes filled with obvious delight.

He then glanced down at you, and upon meeting your gaze he suddenly cleared his throat.

“Thanks, (Y/N),” he said, letting go of you. He looked off to the side, shifting his weight between his feet out of nervousness. “You should probably get goin’. My brothers would want to try the macarons too.”

Giving a small nod of agreement, you gave Mammon a wave goodbye. “Alright. Catch you later, Mammon!”

“Later.”

He took a bite of the macaron as he watched you leave, trying to ignore the hot feeling on his cheeks.

Leviathan let out a groan of frustration, leaning back against his chair. His computer let out noise, signaling to him that he had once again failed to pass the level.

“What’s up with this game? I’ve spent so long trying to complete this-”

“Hey, Levi!”

“Huh? Ah! AH!!”

The otaku shot up at the sight of you right behind him. The sudden action caused his chair to lean back, and you moved out of the way just in time to see him topple backwards onto the floor.

“Levi!”

You were quick to bend down, a hand reached out as you searched for any serious injuries. The male groaned, rubbing the back of his head. He was still awkwardly sitting in his chair; the entire thing had fallen backwards along with him, and he was now laying on it at an awkward angle.

“Levi!” you repeated. “Are you alright? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you…”

“It’s fine,” he muttered. He awkwardly removed himself from the chair so that he was now sitting properly on the ground. “What are you doing here?”

“I have something for you!” you said, and his eyes lit up.

“Is it that new Ruri-chan figurine I mentioned over dinner a few nights ago?” he asked excitedly. “I just checked online, I heard they still have-”

“No, Levi!” you interrupted. “It’s not that, though I do remember you talking about it.”

You took his macaron and grabbed his hand (causing him to suddenly stiffen, you noticed), placing the dessert in his palm. His face became as red as a cherry at the sight of the cookie; you had even taken the time to design his signature headphones over his ears.

“W-w-what-!?”

“It’s a macaron version of you,” you explained. “I tried making it as accurate as possible. I’m sorry if it’s not to your liking…”

He used the back of his hand to cover his face, trying to hide the redness of his cheeks. “I-it’s… i-it’s-!”

“It’s?”

“I-it’s cute!” he said, and he was shaking his head rapidly now. “I-it’s so cute t-t-that I c-can’t take i-it!”

You laughed at his words, kissing his cheek. “I’m so happy you think so!”

Perhaps kissing him wasn’t the best thing to do, for the small action caused the male to pass out. He fell back onto the floor with a thud, the macaron barely staying in his hand.

“Oh, Levi…”

You placed a pillow beneath his head, giving his free hand one last affectionate squeeze before making your leave.

“... and they lived happily ever after,” you finished, reading over Satan’s shoulder.

The blonde looked up from his book to see you right behind him, a look of surprise passing over his face momentarily before smiling.

“Ah, (Y/N). I was so busy reading that I didn’t notice you right away…”

“I didn’t expect you to be the romantic type,” you said. “That story is a romance, if I remember correctly. Isn’t that the one I recommended to you?”

The brother’s cheeks grew a bit red. “Yes, this is the one you mentioned,” he said. “I had some time on my hands, so I figured why not give this book a go? Although…”

He closed the book, head tilting slightly as he gave you a small grin.

“It seems as though you have finished the book for me, (Y/N).”

You held out his macaron. “Well, how about a macaron to celebrate your completion?”

He stared at the dessert for a moment. “Oh. Thank you, (Y/N).”

His fingers were careful as he took the macaron from you, his cheeks still holding their slight red color. He seemed to admire your work, giving a small chuckle at the tiny smile that you had given his macaron self.

“I know you’re the Avatar of Wrath,” you said, “but I wanted to capture the expression you make when you read. You always look so calm and happy.”

“How observant…”

“I’ll make a cat one for you next time, yeah?” you said, pressing a quick kiss onto his cheek before leaving the library. “See you, Satan!”

The male gave a wave in return, his face still a bit red as he gave the macaron a try.

Lucifer was asleep at his desk when you entered his office.

“Huh.” Your steps were light as you made your way over to him. “I guess I’m a bit late…”

The eldest brother held a fountain pen in his hand as he slept. His dark hair was uncharacteristically messy, and he had a large stack of paperwork right next to him. From the markings that decorated the documents one could see that he had completed quite the amount of work.

Resting a soft hand on his shoulder, you placed the platter in front of him. Macaron Lucifer looked a bit lonely now that his brothers had been given away to their human counterparts.

“You work hard, Lucifer,” you said quietly. “Please take some time for yourself, alright?”

You smiled down at his sleeping form.

“Your brothers are lucky to have you, you know,” you said. You knew that he couldn’t hear you, and your hand was now gently rubbing his shoulder. “If you don’t take care of yourself, then how can they look up to you for guidance?”

As you leaned down to give his forehead a kiss, you were met with the sudden turning of his head. Though tired, his red-black eyes stared into yours, obviously awake.

“Lucifer-”

“I appreciate your words, (Y/N),” he said, and you felt your cheeks warm. He sat upright, giving a small stretch as he stared at the plate in front of him. “Oh?”

“I bought some macarons from Madam Scream’s for Barbatos,” you explained. “I bought too much, though, so Barbatos gave me the extras. I decided it would be a nice surprise to give you and your brothers macaron versions of yourselves.”

Lucifer chuckled, and before you knew it he had grabbed you by the wrist and pulled you onto his lap. A small squeak of surprise left your mouth as he kissed your cheek, picking up the macaron.

He studied the macaron for a moment.

“You captured my expression quite well,” he said. “Well done, (Y/N).”

His free hand suddenly grabbed you by the chin, forcing you to turn your head and look into his eyes. You couldn’t help but laugh, surprising him.

“You’re really close, Lucifer,” you said. “Do you want me to feed it to you?”

You didn’t give him a chance to reply, instead taking the cookie from him and holding it up his lips. To be honest, you were a bit nervous; his expression was unreadable now.

“... tch.”

You didn’t expect him to look off to the side. If you looked closely enough, you could see the faintest traces of pink now painting his cheeks.

“Come on, Lucifer,” you said. “Just say ah~”

“Do you really think that I’d so easily follow the orders of-”

“Please?”

He paused at your pleading tone. After a few seconds he sighed, choosing to give in and opening his mouth.

You were grinning now, well aware of the way he gripped onto your waist as you fed him the macaron.

[Bonus]

“How lovely!”

Diavolo let out his usual cheerful laugh as he admired the macaron that you had given to him.

“How funny, to see my face on a cookie,” he said. “Is this usual in the human world?”

You shook your head, smiling at his cheerfulness. “Not really,” you answered. “I had some time on my hands, so I decided to decorate a cookie for you.”

“This is beautifully done, (Y/N),” he laughed. “Don’t you think so, Barbatos?”

The butler, who was standing right next to the prince, gave a slight nod. “Yes, My Lord. It is a fine piece of work.”

You felt yourself grow warm at the compliments. “It’s not much,” you muttered, rubbing the back of your neck in a somewhat awkward manner. “I’m not that talented when it comes to desserts and decorating. Barbatos is, though.”

“You are too humble, (Y/N),” Barbatos said.

“That reminds me, actually…” Diavolo looked serious now. “I have a favor to ask of you, (Y/N).”

“Yes?”

The prince’s unsmiling expression made you feel a bit uneasy. You were so used to seeing him bright and smiling; now he stood there, arms crossed as he stared at you.

Your worry was short-lived, however, for he became even brighter than before as he now gave you a huge grin.

“I will be hosting a party in a few days,” he said. “It would be fun to have many macarons with my face on it, don’t you agree?”

“Uh…” You glanced over at Barbatos for help, surprised to see him a bit shocked as well. “I… well…”

“My Lord-” Barbatos began, only to be cut off by Diavolo’s laughter.

“I think it would be wonderful!” Diavolo said. The look he gave you was so happy that you felt yourself lose the ability to speak for a few moments. “What do you say, (Y/N)? I think five hundred macarons will do, yes?”

You felt yourself sweat now.

“I… uh…” You had no choice. “I suppose-”

“Wonderful! Barbatos will help you if necessary.” Diavolo gave you a kind smile. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to meet with Lucifer.”

The prince left before you could say anything else.

“Please contact me if you are in need of any assistance,” Barbatos said, and though he held a small smile his eyes were apologetic. “I will do my best to help you in any way.”

The butler then left to catch up with his master, leaving you to stand there alone in the hallway.

Listen, I love Pokémon just as much as the next fan does but DIGIMON. Digimon will outlive Pokémon over and over in my heart because of it’s how it’s made.

What do I mean? Well let’s back up a little here.

Pokémon was created to simulate irl bug hunting/collecting in game format. The franchise was based off of something fun and engaging for small children and that’s part of it’s charm and why it got so popular.

Digimon on the other hand, was the solution to the girlish Tamagotchi toys. The company needed a brand that would attract a younger male audience, and also serve as a counterpart to the Tamagotchi toy line.

While both spawned animes respectively, Digimon lagged behind Pokémon by a little more than a year, but Digimon’s concept was based on marketing and selling a virtual pet. (Something not unique to the 90′s time period). While Pokemon was focused more on the gameplay mechanics and subsequent character designs that they could market down the road.

The thing about Pokémon is that the franchise itself is fictional, and much more fantasy oriented than realistic. Digimon’s franchise is based off an object that exists in the real world but is connected to a fictional ‘programmed’ world that is dynamic and constantly changing on a whim.

Only the very core mechanics of the Digimon games stay the same, but each entry into the franchise brings something fresh to the table; new characters, new game mechanics, and most importantly new virtual pet toys. This means fresh material can be added to the old, but can be unique enough to remain separate in style (kind of like fashion). If a season didn’t do too well, then they can scrap that and introduce something different. No two toys or games are alike. Each entry is unique.

This is not to say Pokémon doesn’t add new content to their franchise, it’s just less separate? Like, barring Mega Evolution or Z-Moves and the introduction of the fairy type, most of the gameplay is exactly the same as the last Pokémon game. Which some people like, but after a while can feel kinda stale. (Like eating nothing but pizza for a month. That gets kinda old really fast even if you like pizza.)

Sure, they crank out recolors new Pokémon each game, but it doesn’t really bring many new things to the table. (There’s also Rangers, PMD, and PL:A I know, but they’re not really the mainstream games and don’t come out annually enough to act like series additions to the franchise and also don’t have animes revolved around them).

And the animes? Well, both Digimon and Pokemon might have episodic seasons and some movies, but Digimon tends to hone in on stylizing their characters and giving them growth and development. It’s hard to make a show where the main character never ages, but it’s a whole lot more fun to show off a world where computer programs talk to each other and are influenced by humans both intentionally and unintentionally, which in turn affects the human world.

With Digimon, the stakes can always be raised, characters can always change, and growth is encouraged instead of leveling up your monster. Pokemon’s repetitive gameplay formula is what’s going to end their reign of popularity in the toy market, but honestly I’m okay with that.

Animation Night 103: Toshiki Hirano

Hi friends! It’s a Thursday, and I hope you know what that means by now~

Next week: the two year anniversary of Animation Night! I’m aiming to get a commenting system up on my blog by then and do some of the cleanup tasks for the Animation Night archive.

Now, you like Animation Night and want it (and various other creative projects) to continue, please forgive me for humbly passing around the Patreon hat. The next week or two I’m going to be working on illustrating, and then releasing, a certain RPG setting with all sorts of things I like such as jelly alchemists, weird gender shit, and early-modern body horror, and I’ll be keeping you posted on there.

Anyway, on to this week’s event: lesbian apocalyptic sci-fi mecha OVAs from the 1980s.

Tonight on Animation Night, I have two of the earliest ‘big’ OVAs, back from when the new format was still an open question, which both became cult classics: Megazone 23 and Fight! Iczer One. And this writeup, I’m indebted to Youtube user MercuryFalcon, who put together a 30-minute video about Iczer-1’s production, and even more so the blog aaltomies, who wrote this impressively detailed retrospective.

We’ll begin with the erotic manga magazine Lemon People, which I believe I first talked about back on Animation Night 69 (now in its proper place in the Animation Night archive!), and the mangaka Rei Aran (阿乱霊). Despite the long shadow that Lemon People’s work cast over the evolution of anime and manga styles, and Aran being active at their strongest period, Aran remains barely known outside of his work on Iczer One. Aaltomies writes that Aran was prone to overworking, and as a consequence, most of his works - including Fight! Iczer-1 and Galaxy Police Patrizer-3 (the latter running from 1983 to 1993).

You can see some of Aran’s work at the link above. He was a self-taught artist, working his way up through dōjin groups before submitting work to Lemon People at the suggestion of his friend Hariken Ryu. but here’s a cover he drew for the issue of Lemon People in which Iczer 1 debuted:

The jump to OVA came via Hariken Ryu’s college friend, Toshihiro Hirano (who’d later change his first name to Toshiki), who in 1982 had been working on Macross (Animation Night 64). Having yakked sufficent de culture, Ryu, Hirano and many Macross animators announced in ‘83 they would adapt Ryu’s 1982 manga Gekisatsu Uchuken (Space Punch) for TV, but it fell through. Meeting Aran, Hirano instead started talking about adapting Iczer, perhaps as one of these new-fangled OVAs...

The OVA format was still very new in 1985, and even in the bubble economy (c.f. Animation Night 34). The ball was supposed to start rolling Mamoru Oshii’s Dallos (1983), but when it flopped, the idea was postponed and Hirano went to work on other projects like Megazone 23 (1985). Planned as a 12-episode TV anime, funding was pulled and Megazone came out instead as an OVA, where in contrast to Dallos, it proved wildly successful. Suddenly adapting Iczer was back on the table for AIC, who gave Hirano the choice of what to adapt; he chose Iczer, and the first episode released that very same year.

Hirano is one of the major sources of the look of 80s anime, and yet he was slow to come around to the medium. (Drawing now on another retrospective on him here). Born in the 50s, Hirano was initially dismissive of anime, seeing it as inferior to his beloved manga; he changed his mind after seeing Toei’s The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon (わんぱく王子の大蛇退治, Wanpaku Ōji no Orochi Taiji, 1963), which was I suppose you could say his sakuga awakening, but his biggest passion was tokusatsu, particularly Tōhō’s kaiju movies and TV series like Ultra Q and Ultraman. His interests drifted to Western movies, but he was pulled back in high school by the 70s era of tokusatsu (notably the original Kamen Rider) and early robot anime such as Mazinger Z.

This waxing and waning interest continued as he went to Tokyo Designer Gakuin College, falling in with a group of future mangaka including Hariken Ryu who shared his love for robots and toku. Still, it wasn’t as if he then ran straight for anime; he took a part-time job at Toei at university, drawing inbetweens for none other than Yoshinori Kanada (see Animation Night 62); he only gradually came around to working full-time at Toei.

As such, he is an artist whose passions are very straightforward: he wants to make stuff with the same feeling as tokusatsu; he likes drawing robots, superheroes, monsters and women he finds beautiful. He got his start at Toei only to find to his immense disappointment that he’d instead be working on a 200-episode historical series Ikiyu-san about a young Buddhist monk, which ran from ‘75 to ‘82. He absolutely hated the ~8 months he worked on this series, only finding relief drawing robots for Televi-kun magazine. Eventually he escaped to draw nigen [2nd key animation, aka tiedowns] of cars for a racing show Arrow Emblem: Hawk of the Grand Prix (1977) directed by Rintaro, which proved much more to his taste. This led him directly to work on Captain Harlock, drawing nigen for two episodes, particularly proud of his illustrations of the women antagonists in each. (Not sure if the following is one of Hirano’s...)

Next came inbetween checking on Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato (1978) - it’s notable that here Toei were already outsourcing douga (cleanup and inbetweens) to South Korea, and Hirano’s job here was to fix those drawings or even fully redraw scenes that weren’t up to standard. This is where we can join (drink) Matteo Watzky’s account of the period here, as Hirano finally left Toei to found studio Beebow with Tomonori Kogawa, working as a subcontractor mainly for Sunrise, particularly on Space Runaway Ideon (see: Animation Night 88). There, we started to see some real breakthroughs in drawing characters with solid 3D form; Watzky points to this cut from the Ideon followup film Be Invoked.

Following this, Hirano launched another new studio, called Io, and it’s here his work on Macross takes place. Hirano was very frustrated with the corners the anime had to cut, but here he started rising to prominence for his animation of Linn Minmay, off the back of which he became one of the animation directors for the Macross film Do You Remember Love (Animation Night 64), made an episode director debut in the foundational ero-anime series Cream Lemon (Animation Night 69). DYRL was followed for the Macross team by Megazone 23, pitched as a sci-fi series Omega City 23 that ended up awkwardly compressed into an OVA film after a troubled production, yet this all found unexpected success on the sheer strength of the animation and style - much of that being Hirano’s character designs. (Notably, this film also featured the key animation work of Hideaki Anno.) Which brings us back up to Iczer One...

So what’s it about? We’ll start with Iczer One. Let’s put it this way: in 1983, throwing around the word Cthulhu wasn’t nearly so stale as it is today. It’s packed full of indulgent ideas and things that someone like Hirano would like: women, robots, body horror... and he made it even more so, making it much more lesbian centric. As not just the director but also the character designer

The story begins with a catgirl called Iczer-One - this is a catgirl of the classical anime big hair mode - who wishes to fight aliens called the Cthulhu (no relation, I think) who are attempting to take over the Earth by implanting mind control parasites. When Iczer foils this plan, they escalate to full-on military invasion. To fight back, Iczer needs a suitable ‘synchronisation partner’ to pilot her mecha... which she finds in a Japanese schoolgirl called Nagisa. The battle against the aliens rapidly escalates, destroying much of the planet that Iczer wished to defend.

And Megazone 23? It’s set in a far-future city deep in space, locked in a war with a rival megazone. The government of the eponymous Megazone 23 launch a plan to hack the city’s governing AI, EVE, and force it to participate in the war. In the midst of this is Shōgo Yahagi, who gets pulled into a complicated intrigue which reveals that, surprisingly enough, the government is full of lies and his world is some kind of simulation. The first two parts of the OVA series, released in 1985 and 86, tell the story of what happens to Shōgo, while the third, released in 1989 under the direction of Ichiro Itano (yep! the missile circus guy!), takes place after a centuries long time skip during which time Shōgo has undergone a serious heel turn. whoops, I got this mixed up: Itano directed the second episode in 86, and actually that’s a really interesting story in its own right which I’ll address in a followup post!

The animation is absolutely spectacular: you can totally see that this is the same team that made Macross DYRL, and it’s full of the ideas of the Kanada school taken to an absurd level of polish - like just look at this background animation, how??

I will admit, these are absolutely on the more indulgent end of OVAs and probably not going to offer deep meditations on the human condition, but they’re also a fantastic window into a period when the craft of animation was going through some seriously rapid development. It really is hard to overstate the difference in animation of 1980 and 1983: the drawings are more convincingly physical, rich in detail, move better; effects animation has completely transformed; the complex camerawork of people like Itano has come in. Nothing would be the same after.

Hirano would go on to make many more OVAs and films, both as a director and key animator which I may well address in the future; he would later fall in with the realists and work on Roujin Z and Akira, and work on Itano’s gory 90s OVAs like Battle Royal High School. And although his 80s designs sensibility went out of fashion, he is still very active in the anime industry today, most recently directing a Netflix-backed adaptation of the Grappler Baki martial arts manga just last year! Which is wild, because he is almost 70 years old at this point.

Soft ABC’s

note: i’m trying to clear my drafts and i’m left and right with ideas.

A - Affection (how do they show affection)

In the beginning KC wasn’t as affectionate but later on she became super affectionate but only in private. She isn’t big on the whole PDA thing unless she’s jealous.

B - Balance (how do they balance you, work/school/life?)

With spy life and school life, KC finds it hard at first to balance your relationship. The more dates she missed due to missions the more distant she felt you were. KC finally made the best of both words and turned your date nights into study dates.

C - Cuddles (do they enjoy cuddling? what positions?)

KC adores your cuddles, especially after long and hard missions. She’d yearn for the hours to end quickly so she could be wrapped in a big blanket with you watching movies.

D - Date (what was your first date?)

A picnic. KC wanted to make sure the date was perfect and no interruptions at all. She wanted to spend the date to get to know you. The picnic was in a beautiful meadow with a gorgeous view of the town.

E - Excited (how excited do they get when they see you/are with you?)

After long and stressful days, KC tries not to run you over so she keeps her cool around you. She doesn’t want to scare you off so she “walking” to your house and waits a few minutes to knock.

F - Fighting (what happens when you fight)

It takes a lot for you guys to fight. She’s pretty chill and you’re pretty chill. The only time you fought was when you found out she was a spy. It was pretty bad, yelling and screaming. Trudie powered off to avoid the screaming.

G - Gorgeous (pet names. what do they like to call you? what do they like to be called?)

The typical nicknames, KC isn’t big on creating new names. “baby” “babe”.

H - Hi (first time meeting)

You were new to the school and had the pleasure of running into Marissa. She instantly hooked you around her arms when she saw your designer purse. KC was doing homework at lunch when she laid eyes on you. Sounds cliche but KC swore time froze. “KC this is YN! YN this is KC”. KC felt her face heat up when you smiled at her “Hey KC”

I - Intimacy (how romantic they are)

KC doesn’t have a romantic bone in her body. She may be smart but when it comes to romance, she isn’t the best at it. You’re the romantic one in the relationship.

J - Jealousy (do they get jealous? how do they react to you being jealous)

She's 100% the jealous type. Guys and girls are on her radar. If she feels someone is too close she’ll instantly wrap her arms around you and make it known that you’re hers. When you’re jealous, she finds it cute. She’ll remind you at the end of the day that she’s yours and your hers

K - Kisses (where do they like to kiss you/how often?)

Bc of her height ( if you’re taller than her, read the second part) she loves giving you forehand kisses as much as possible. If you’re taller than her, she loves giving you kisses on the shoulder/cheek. She usually gives you shoulder kisses on dates tho.

L - Love (when was the first time they said I love you or realized it?)

KC realized she loved you after she came back from a mission where she was almost killed. Limping back into her bedroom, you surprised her. With your rambling, she realized how much she loved you. That same day she told you she was in love with you.

M - Moving in (when do you decide to move in together)

Keep in mind, you guys are still in high school. The first step into moving in together would be roommates in college.

N - Newborn (their reaction to starting a family)

I'm not sure about this one since KC seems the type to not want kids, but if yall did have kids it would be a long discussion before you guys adopt

O - Open (how open you are with one another)

You guys are pretty open about everything the only thing that is kept away from you is that KC is a spy.

P - Photos (what kind of photos you take of them/they take of you)

KC loves photos of you sleeping/ wearing her clothes. You take photos of her when she’s studying or not looking.

Q - Quirks (what random habits do you have that they love or hate/vice versa)

When you get nervous you hiccup. KC loves/hates It depends on her mood.

R - Recovery (how you help them after an injury/vice versa)

You can always be found at KCs house so every night when KC comes home from a mission you already have ice pack and warm bath ready for her.

S - Solution (how they resolve fights)

Let’s be honest, KC won’t apologize if she thinks she’s right. Usually fights end up in tearful apologies or little jokes here and there

T- Touch (when they need/want your touch, what will they do? how often?)

KC isn’t so big on PDA like I said earlier, but when she feels the need to come into skin to skin contact with you, she’ll hold your hand and play with your fingers.

U - Up ( waking up with them)

You wake up earlier than her and so usually you clean her room ( if needed) while you waited for her to wake up

V - Vacation (where they travel with you)

With KC’s benefits from being a spy, she can practically take you anywhere.

W - Wedding (how they propose/where you get married/honeymoon)

You’re the one to propose. You propose to her after graduation from college at the library. Y’all get married in a nice small ceremony in a DC park. The honeymoon is in Paris where you go to look at art

X - X-factor (what about you captivated them?)

KC loves how you don’t hold back from telling the truth. She loves your bluntness.

Y - Yawning (how they act when they’re tired)

As soon as she yawns, she can go out at any moment. Makes sure to carry a pillow

Z - Zzzz (how you fall asleep together)

Can I ask, if it isn't too personal, how hard it actually is to get a job (and what kind) after studying polisci and English? Because I think I want to do that but my parents are quite skeptical about job prospects, and they'd much rather I do something in stem. No pressure tho obviously! Thank you

The thing is, a lot of people end up in a career that’s totally unrelated to their major (probably more commonly those of us with liberal arts or social sciences degrees, although I know a guy who has a Masters in Physics and he worked as a movie theatre projectionist before becoming a manager there 🤷🏻‍♀️), so choice of major is not necessarily a great predictor for employability or what career path(s) you might ultimately take. Also, I feel like things are much more fluid now and it’s really not uncommon to see people retraining to switch careers after 5/10/15 years, because they want make lifestyle adjustments or for other reasons.

Personally, I think it’s better to pursue something academically that will sustain your interest and curiosity during your studies. I chose those particular subjects because they were the ones I enjoyed most and excelled at in high school. Rightly or wrongly, I wasn’t thinking too much about my future career prospects. Even when I graduated I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, beyond that I had no great desire to teach or work in government/civil service 🥴. Applying to a corporate graduate recruitment program didn’t appeal either. In the UK, they’re hugely, hugely competitive, and I just didn’t want to put myself through the ringer, plus I kind of lacked the cutthroat ambition to go that route anyway. For a while I temped in a series of entry-level office jobs until I figured out my next steps.

Around this time I was getting into web design and front-end coding - completely self-taught - and I eventually decided to go back to university for a postgraduate diploma in that area. The work I do now (UI/UX designer; I’m tangentially in STEM!) has absolutely nothing to do with my Bachelors degree, but what I would say is that there are transferable skills in terms of research, critical thinking, written and verbal communication, all of which are desirable to employers, regardless of industry. Plenty of practitioners in UX and Service Design come from other academic disciplines or different walks of life. In fact, it’s positively encouraged to bring in a more diverse set of perspectives and experiences. In the same design team, I once worked with someone who majored in Psychology and another who had a Masters degree in Ecology & Sustainable Land Management. It was only the two most junior designers who had any ‘formal’ design education. My point being, there isn’t only one route into a particular career. False starts, trial and error, or a complete change of direction can be formative and are not bad things by any means. Imo, there’s way too much pressure on teens and young adults to decide what they want to do in life, because unless someone had a burning ambition from an early age to become x, y, or z, how can anyone possibly know beyond a vague “I like art” or “I’m good at maths” or “chemistry is cool”?

I mean, I do understand your parents’ concerns. For many, higher education is a costly investment and they want you to have plentiful job opportunities and not to struggle financially. But, trust me, there’s no impediment to making a good living by choosing a non-STEM major - and it also largely comes down to what your own definition of “good” looks like and your criteria for personal/professional fulfilment.

Not sure if this is the case where you are, but over here university degree programs typically publish stats on what graduates went on to do, career-wise. That might be a good place to start to get an idea of what options are out there, see what appeals to you, and you can share that info with your parents too, to reassure them that you’ve done your research and are making an informed choice, whatever you decide. Also, if there’s a careers advisory/guidance service available to you then that would be an excellent source of information to tap into. Good luck!

A = Affection (How do they show their affection?) The kinship type of guy. A lot of holding hands and smiling forehead kisses. Almost everywhere does he wrap his arm around his s/o’s shoulder. At a basketball game or something he will pack an extra blanket or jacket to give to them if they’re cold. He is very thoughtful about the little things in a relationship.

B = Breath (What could their s/o do to take their breath away?) Their smile. Seeing their whole face light up when they are happy or amazed. How their eyes sparkle and maybe their dimples show? It’s his favorite thing in the world. His s/o’s smile makes his aches go away and his day clear up. It clears his mental acne really.

C = Cuddling (Do they cuddle? If they do, how and when do they cuddle?) Huge cuddler. All the time. (See more at H)

D = Dream (What do they dream of doing with their s/o?) He would want to take his s/o to Chicago and show them where he grew up. Introduce his parents and show his partner around. Make them taste his favourite pizza, maybe a road trip? The open road (the highway to heaven....), sunsets and gas stations. Have midnight pancakes and black coffee at a diner!

E = Effort (How much effort do they put into a relationship?) This I am not sure about. I would say he puts in a normal level of effort. Pretty much the same amount as his s/o. He shows them they are precious and his most valuable thing in life but he won’t go full bonkers on valentines day or something like that.

F = Fear (What do they do if their s/o is scared? How do they handle it?) Johnny handles it very well. He is very educated and cautious about mental health in general so he would take every fear seriously. If his s/o is anxious about anything he will do his best to make a situation more comfortable for them or try to avoid the situation as a whole. G = Gifts (What type of gifts do they give their s/o? Do they want a gift in return?) Accessories. Johnny strikes me as a men who gets his s/o small things likes designer bracelets or card holders. Things they wouldn’t buy themselves because it’s unnecessary and expensive but if he knows they will accept and like it and most importantly use it - he will get it to them. And if they say they can’t accept he would say something like “It’s alright, don’t worry. I got a discount on it because I worked with them earlier this year.” Even if it’s a lie.

H = Hugs (Do they hug their s/o? How often?) Johnny is tall and he has long arms. Perfect to wrap around someone and should them from cold wind at a busstop or pull them in after a long walk in the rain. He knows how much his s/o craves those hugs and how protected they are feeling when he holds them tightly.

I = Intimacy (How romantic are they? Do they have problems with intimacy?) Has this man issues with intimacy? No?? Have you seen him??? I would be just as confident if I was him. J = Jealous (Do they get jealous? How do they act when jealous?) Jealous boyfriend right here. Johnny might act chill about his s/o hanging out with other men on days he is also available or seeing them walk out of lecture together on a day he wanted to surprise them by picking them up. He won’t let it show because it would hurt his reputation as LBBY (Laid Back Boyfriend of the Year) but his s/o will notice. Maybe by how short his answers are or because of all the questions he asks about that friend. Or maybe by the way he kisses them later that night. Maybe he also dislikes this side about himself because he knows he can trust them. K = Kiss (Are they a good kisser? Do they like to kiss? How often do they try to kiss you?) Johnny’s kisses are to melt for. Just the perfect mix of soft pecks and slightly rough ... idk how to describe it. He would randomly bite his s/o’s lips to catch them off guard and if they blush he will laugh about it and pull them into a long lingering and smily kiss ...

L = Love (When do they say they love you? How often do they say it? Do they prefer to say or show it?) Constantly. He will say it. He will text it. He will moan it. He will ask you “You love me right?” There won’t be a day his s/o won’t hear or read it or both.

M = Marriage (Do they want to get married? If so, what kind of ceremony?) In a committed relationship Johnny would think about marriage 100% but he doesn’t have to get married right away. Maybe ever. He strikes me as the kind of guy who is happy just being with his s/o. Maybe he will think different if they’re ever thinking about having a kid. But in that case time will tell.

N = Night out (What type of dates do they like to go on? How often do they like to go on them?) Goofy dates! Game nights! Haunted houses where his s/o clings on to him! Arcades and hours of dance dance revolution! O = Out of the Ordinary (What’s something they don’t normally do with/for their s/o?) I don’t think he would go to fancy restaurants. Not even for an anniversary. It’s just not his thing and this casual red wine at the river or beach is more his thing than make dinner reservations and letting waiters tell him what wine he’s having. I am not saying that he doesn’t do it at all - maybe he enjoys it on some occasions (when he has to impress parents for example) but overall with his s/o ... I think a chill open air wine tasting might rather be his thing. P =Playful (Are they playful in a relationship? If so, how do they play around/mess with their s/o?) He messes around all the time. He will make himself a bra out of lather when he’s in the shower try to seduce his s/o, he will mock the radio moderator and make up an semi-interesting newsflash about their breakfast. Q = Questions (Do they ask their s/o their opinion on things? Do they share theirs?) Loves to ask their s/o for their opinion so he does it a lot. Sometimes he even changes his decision if his s/o has some really good points or perhaps even better ideas. R = Random (How spontaneous is their relationship? Do they do things on the spot or plan ahead?) This man is so goofy how is he not random. He will wake his s/o up in the middle of the night just to go see the stars. He would make last minute dinner reservations and trick them into a dinner date by asking them if they come pick him up. He is so random and I love it. Though it would drive me insane. S = Sleep (How do they sleep with their s/o?) A lot of cuddles and soft temple kisses during the early state of the night or the going-to-bed/settling in but once everyone is comfy and tired they slew butt to butt. He jokes about that constantly. T = Trust (How much do they trust their s/o?) He lives off and thrives on trust. A relationship in which he wouldn’t fully trust his s/o is no relationship to him.

U = Unique (What makes them unique as a s/o?) Johnny radiates positive vibes, which makes him insanely attractive. He is so comfortable with himself and empowering towards literally everyone it’s as if you would have your very own personal cheerleader. With him on their side his s/o could literally accomplish everything. V = Vulnerable (How long until they can be vulnerable around their s/o? What are they like in this state?) He is pretty open about his feelings and concerns so I don’t think it would take a long time for him to talk to theyr s/o about everything. He shares his worries with a lot of friends/close friends but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s less significant when he tells his s/o. He might talk to a lot of people about things but he might only take advice from a few. W = Weather (What would he do during a cloudy and rainy day?) Coffee and galleries. A day with rolling thunder or just light annoying rain for him is the most welcome excuse to take his s/o for a classy museum tour. It doesn’t matter if it’s modern art or some good old fashioned photography. He would love to spend hours there and not missing out of anything in the outside world. X = Xylophon (What does he think about their s/o’s taste in music? Is it different?) If you they like the same music as he does - he would love it. But honestly he is such an open-minded man we would listen to anything at least once and even though he doesn’t like it would say something like ‘It’s interesting.’ On a car ride or something they would agree on something they both enjoy or put on a shared playlist and he would peacefully endure the songs he doesn’t like or enjoying them just as much because they make his s/o visibly happy. Y = Yuck (Is there anything that might bother their s/o about him? Any flaws?) So... we all know how much he enjoys coffee. Sometimes maybe a little too much. And we also hopefully all know the rules of basic hygiene and how you shouldn’t overdo it. What I am trying to say it that boy has coffee breath. He has so much coffee during the day that he can’t possibly brush his teeth every time. Not saying that he is dirty or anything. Just ... take a hint - pop a mint.

Z = Zeal (Are they passionate as a s/o? Do they want or like passion?) This man breathes passion. I honestly don’t think he could be with someone less passionate than him. More reserved? Yes. Someone who doesn’t take the lead? Yes. But someone lacking in passion is a no-no. I’m not even talking solemnly about passion in a sexual way. It also applies to interests or hobbies. Being passionate about a certain topic or sport, music, politics, ... you name it. He is the utmost passion able person and we all know it. Period.

- Stuff that makes you uncomfortable, or just plain stuff that is Not Your Thing. While the Black Emporium does not believe in kink shaming or otherwise insulting people for their own personal taste, we do want people to let their artists or authors know what their limits are. You don't have to give any reasons for this; "no x/y/z" gives your creator plenty of info to discern where your limits are.

We can only take action if someone writes you something against your DNWs if it is in your sign-up.

Prompts:

Prompts can be just about anything, but they're meant to be ideas that you'd like to see that can help give your artist or author something to work off of. Sometimes this can be a prompt or a question you'd like explored (for example: What if Solas found himself falling for M!Trevelyan? How would he feel about potentially falling for a human?) or an idea you'd love to see (Josie and M!Cadash snuggled up in front of a fire, please!) or just a few words of inspiration (Leliana/Josephine - secrets, lies, ravens).

Details about your character(s):

It is fairly common for people to give basic descriptions of their characters if it is a character where their appearance or personality may vary (ex: Wardens/Hawkes/Inquisitors), particularly if fanart is requested. These descriptions can be very basic indeed (ex: purple hawke), or extremely detailed (ex: This is Celeste Trevelyan, she loves her squad more than life itself, pink hair, dusky-rose skin, built like she could bench press you six ways from sunday).

Bucket Requests:

You may also use the description field to note additional pairings that you would be willing to receive. You may find this option helpful if you are willing to consider different Warden or Inquisitor backgrounds for your specified pairing that have been nominated. You are limited to an additional ten pairings specified in this manner. Please fill out the form entirely before filling in pairings manually in the description; those that you fill in in the relationship field (the first 30) will take priority.

Things you should not put in the description field:

“I would like anything but nasty [kink]. I think people who write that are gross and nasty.”

Please do not insult people who like something you dislike. It’s Not For You, and That’s Okay. “No [kink]” expresses this much better than a long explanation of why you don’t like [kink].

“I’m only choosing this to get to three nominations. Please don’t write it.”

While we know someone who signs up for a, b and z may want a and/or b more than z, but please don’t scream to your author or artist that what you may well match on is something you don’t want as much as other pairings. Writing something like this also reduces your chance at treats as well.

“Even though I said I wanted M!Solavellan, I’m fine with F!Solavellan too if you like that better.”

Please don’t tell people that you’d be alright with non-nominated pairings, as fics with only non-nominated pairings cannot be added to the collection.

Minimums and Maximums in Requests:

You are required to fill out a minimum of three request fields (Required: Relationship, Additional Tags; Optional: Letter, Description). Remember that you may put in one OR two relationships per request field, so the maximum number of pairings that you can list in this manner is thirty. Remember also that you must fill out at least 3 request fields, so if you fill 2 out with 3 requests in each "request box", Ao3 will still want you to add one more -- it's a good rule of thumb to fill at least three out with one request, then double up as you wish.

4. Continue to the “Offers” field

There are several different components of this field:

Relationship:

Enter one, two, or three approved relationships that you would like to see in a fanwork created for you. This field will autosuggest approved pairings. If your pairing does not show up, it may be that you have fallen victim to a known bug of Ao3's that we cannot fix, wherein pairings in a tagset do not autofill. If this happens, simply type it in as it appears in the tagset. If it continues to give an error, please drop us a comment with the pairing so we can figure out what's going on. You also have the option to select any relationship.

By selecting “Any Relationship,” that means that you are willing to write or draw fanwork for, literally, ANY of the approved pairings.

The only limitation we will accept will be be a limitation of what category of relationship you want to create for: eg, Any F/F, Any M/M, Any F/M, Any Multi, Any Other, or Any Nonbinary. Anything else WILL BE REJECTED. You may NOT use this option to say, for example, “Any Cullen pairing”. This option is for any and all of the approved pairings in your designated category/categories. Do not use this option unless you are sure that any is truly what you want.

Additional Tags:

You can offer to create fanfic, fanart, or both. Selecting "any" is treated the same as selecting both.

Comments for mods:

Here is where you can provide additional detail about what you will and won’t create. As with your requests, you can provide general likes and dislikes as well as things that you absolutely will not do. If there is someone signed up you absolutely cannot stand, please write "don't match me to x" here; we won't ask details, we just won't match and this will be a fully confidential field. If you hate nugs, put it here, and we'll make sure you get at least one nug-free prompt and, ideally, a nug-free sign-up. We want you to have an assignment you'll be happy about, so if you've got something that would be triggering for you to create for, let us know. We can only take action based on our own knowledge, so the more information we have the better we can try to match you with what you really want. If you do not enter anything into this box, we will assume that means you are okay with anything for the specified pairing(s) selected. If you have any preferences or do not wants, we would encourage you to add them. It makes the process smoother for all involved. None of the mods will blab over whatever you write; we just want you to have the best time possible with your assignment.

A Note on Matching

Black Emporium runs on OR matching, which means that you will match on one relationship out of the ones that you offer and request. You are guaranteed to match on ONE relationship; you may match on more, you may not. For your assignment, you can write what you matched on OR you can write any other couple on their sign-up form. You will only have to write or draw for ONE request, not all of them. The minimums will be one piece of artwork or one 1,000 word fic.

Brothers With a Crafty Poly!MC

And I mean like, arts and crafts! Because I think that a good chunk of us are creative people. With creativity comes mess though 😅. Speaking of creativity, I made some strawberry barrettes. I have two sets to sell, but one single for me, and tbh I love themmmmmmmmmm.

This kinda includes my artistic s/o ask, but kinda doesn't. Basically anything at Micheals lmao

Lucifer

The mess and supplies are most likely what bothers him.

Like, he actively encourages hobbies, but when people begin trailing supplies throughout the house (thread, sequins, glitter ((thanks Diavolo)), and little strings of hot glue), the demon becomes absolutely annoyed.

This stuff is okay in it's designated space, and honestly he doesn't mind the occasional trail of glitter that somehow got stuck to you in some way, but all the time drives him crazy.

I mean it's to the point where he's always got something stuck to him.

(^^which is pretty unavoidable, if he hangs around you often. Get him a lint brush, that might shut him up)

He does enjoy watching you work though. Seeing you dedicate your time to something other then school and his brothers is extremely heart-warming.

He isn't afraid to criticize your work. However, there's always some recommendation to follow. Except when it comes to things he's never seen done before like resin art. Then he'll just be pretty straight forward, and might not even tell you what he thinks you did wrong because even he doesn't know.

Especially likes hobbies that include scrapbooking, embroidery, and glass art.

Mammon

He's basically like a kid bothering his parent when you do your crafty stuff.

Like he either wants to be apart of your crafts.

Mammon also digs through your things all the time, so if you have valuable craft supplies, hide them!

Tends to spill things all the time. Expect to find him covered in glitter at least twice.

He does, probably, make something from your supplies. There's no telling how it turns out. He's going to be very proud of it though, and depending on how his brothers react, you can make or break his self-confidence for the rest of the day.

(Mammon, sweetie, I love what you made, but please don't use my sewing scissors on craft paper ever again)

Mammon likes to lay his head on your lap when you do things. Puppy dog man.

Likes hobbies that include; Jewelry making, basically anything shiny, and sculpting

Leviathan

He's going to take FULL advantage of your creativity space lmao.

Loves to do things with you, by himself, watch you do them, ext.

Really enjoys taking stickers and putting them on you lmao.

Will probably try anything once.

(^He likes the idea of having something no one has. Limited edition is kinda his thing after all. But, wood carving/burning and knitting don't ever agree with him)

You'll probably wake up one day to find some weird, intricate craft project started in the middle the night. He might leave notes telling you not to move the project, or to please add X/Y/Z so it's a bit more stable.

Also he just buys random craft supplies that you don't even know the name to.

Likes hobbies that include; Sewing, resin art, and polymer clay.

Satan

Oh my goodness this many loves to buy fucking YARN.

I don't know if it's just the cat man in him, or if it's because he especially enjoy knitting/crochet crafts, but he buys yarn for your supplies all the time.

And it's always the weird stuff too. Like the yarn with pompoms, or something in that neon green he seems to adore, or whatever else he finds that catches his eye.

(Honestly, everything that catches his eye is scary)

He also really enjoys watching embroidery.

Idk something about all the parts coming together to form a beautiful picture really makes him relax.

Tbh you could honestly make him anything for a gift and he'd be happy you put time and effort into something!

(Best gift Idea off the top of my head is one of those little hads with cat ears lmao.)

Asmodeus

Asmo is either going to treat your space one of two ways.

He'll be your best craft partner, buying little charms and stuff for the two of you to use on the things you'll end up doing. He always cleans up after himself, and makes sure to replace whatever he uses.

Or he's the worst and never cleans up after himself, and takes without ever giving back lmao.

Either way he's still always going to be up there with you, doing something to bedazzle his life.

(Remember the phone case convo? Yeah, that's basically this situation all over again...just with EVERYTHING.)

He kinda does the Levi thing too where he makes stuff and just leaves it there over night, but you'll always know what he's doing, because Asmodeus always brags about his skillful hands.

Likes hobbies that include; soap making, resin art, and sewing. Basically Levi without the extra weeb

Beelzebub

Y'know how the stereotypical TV dad is always like "Wow, amazing" whenever their child does something?

That's pretty much Beel.

(I kinda relate him to my dad lmao. I show him something and the response is always "Wow babe, that's amazing! Have you ever thought of taking classes in that?". Like, I'm not saying beel is dad energy, but I'm saying he has that same support for his partner. He wants them to commit and be happy with whatever they do.)

He is pretty bad about getting crumbs on your workspace though.

Likes to sit you in his lap when you're working so he can watch you do you're thing. It's not exactly the best thing for most projects, but it is pretty cute.

He's really aggressive about treating your injuries lmao.

Likes hobbies that include; Most candy/cake decoration, polymer clay, and miniatures (!!!! He really likes miniatures !!!!!)

Belphegor

Most crafts are loud, stink, and give him a headache. Like really.

Who knew that glass cutting made such screechy noises? That sewing machines could be so violent? How wood burning and hot glue smell rancid?

Ugh. He avoids your crafty space like the plague.

It's a bad napping area, and tbh, it's probably the most annoying place in the house for him when he's not sleeping anyways.

He will take advantage of the fruits of your labors though.

He likes fluffy sweaters, blankets of all kind, and those pretty glass decorations you put in the window to catch light.

Pillows are fun, heated rice packs are too, and anything that smells good is great in his book. Honestly just as easy to make something for him as Satan tbh.
