it’s October 25th 2020. I learned of your engagement a week ago through social media. However, let’s start at the beginning of our timeline.

September 2016:

Matched on Tinder, I remember telling you about a scholarship I got and you immediately wanted to celebrate. We planned a time to meet. I sent videos of me goofy dancing to you, and you jokingly called me the basic white girl stereotype. I rode up to Lincoln with my sister and met you for the first time. You kissed me and you had just shaved so it hurt but I didn’t mind. We played music on each other’s phones to guess the artist before I left. You texted me immediately saying it was the best first date you ever had. I went to Lincoln the following weekend and spent the day with you. We got Chipotle, snuck into Dont Breathe and you couldn’t stop kissing my head through the movie. Like it was a habit. Like you were going to be doing it for the rest of your life. We went to a party that night, I got way too drunk and threw up on your shoes, telling you I was going to fall in love with you. Someone from your frat drove us back and we snuggled and immediately fell asleep. I came out to you about my suicide attempt while at work, still remember the feeling of leaning down on the cold, metal, table and crying as you told me you couldn’t imagine it being successful and not meeting me

October 2016

I ask you to come to Valas for my moms office party and you agreed. I got to your house before you did and sat in the kitchen and talked with your mom. You walked in, put your hands on my shoulders and acted and bickered with your mom over her telling me about your childhood stories. We take the back roads to get there. We do the normal activities, you pulled me into the corn maze and kissed me. You kissed me like you’d been waiting to do it all day. We walked out of the corn maze giggling as if we got away with something. My birthday comes up. You bring me to Ihop and make a joke about me being a gold digger because you just got paid for being a DD for your frat’s party. We came back to my house and watched legally blonde. You kissed me goodbye and said you’d see me that night. I celebrate with my friends and immediately go to your house. You asked if I wanted to smoke with you. We drove to a field and smoked. We went back to your house and you went to shower. I was coming up the stairs to join you when you were walking down in a towel to get me. You said “Hey you” and kissed me on the forehead. We showered to XO by Eden on repeat. I can’t listen to that song to this day. One night you got drunk and said that you wanted me. You wanted me forever and you didn’t know what the future held but for now, I was yours and that’s all you cared about. We fought about long distance later that day due to me going to ISU and you going to Lincoln. I told you I didn’t want to keep getting attached to you if we were just going to break up when I went to college. You told me you understood and you were sorry. I tried to take it back, I tried so hard to take it back, take you back, but I couldn’t. You told me you were scared for me and almost called an ambulance for me. I lashed out and told you that you pretended the whole time. You didn’t respond. I wrote you an apology letter and mailed it to your house. You texted me weeks later stating that the letter meant the world to you, and you forgave me. We said goodbye.

August 2017

I was moving into my dorm at Iowa State. I checked my phone and saw that you followed my instagram. My stomach dropped. I stood in the middle of the room with tears streaming down my cheeks, missing you all over again. You never liked my pictures and I never liked yours.

May 2018

I was scrolling through tinder and saw your profile. I swiped right and my stomach dropped when nothing happened. I was in the target parking lot when you matched with me. I screamed. I started jumping up and down and skipping to the entrance. You sent the first message. “Still as cute as ever I see”. I couldn’t stop smiling. I couldn’t stop thinking about how there was another chance for us. You asked me to come over when I got home. I came home and sat on your floor while you laid in bed, just catching up. I thanked you for not letting me go to Lincoln to be with you. You winked at me, saying you knew me. I never doubted that for a second. You told me about going on tour with TWLOHA. That was your dream. I was so excited for you, but my heart hurt knowing another goodbye was coming.

June-July 2018

We met up between your breaks, you told me stories from tour and I told her you about the crazy customers that were coming into my job. We snuggled and kissed and I will never be able to forget the smell of that ratty cream colored blanket on your bed. It smelt like you. Nothing made me more comfortable and safe. You introduced me to your favorite movie and I compared it to Wall-E. It became an ongoing inside joke between us. After leaving your house one night, you texted me saying “I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. I’m always going to care for you, but I still can’t do long distance”. I told him I understood and you stated that we would stay best friends.

August 2018

You were back from tour. We shared more stories and experiences. You had a checklist of everything you wanted to do with the money you got from the tour; Getting a dog being on the list. I immediately looked up the humane society and saw they had puppies. I followed you to your house in Gretna to get in your car with you to go. You told me they had your dream dog at Tulleys and we had to go there first. The first dog was wild, bit a hole in my shirt, we couldn’t stop laughing. The second one just snuggled right into your lap. You called your mom and as she told you no, you said you were not asking for permission, just giving a heads up. We brought her out to the car and she fell asleep on my lap. We brainstormed names, landing on Daisy. I carried her through PetSmart while you got supplies before bringing her back to your moms house. I went back to Ames for school the next day, but before I left, you told me you needed to get Daisy acclimated for road trips so you could bring her to Ames. I went to Ames praying to a god I don’t even believe in that dog would always remind you of me. We kept in touch off and on for a few days before telling me you had to bring Daisy back. You said you cried, I cried. I was terrified that you wouldn’t think of me anymore without a constant reminder such as a dog we got together. That was our last conversation for months.

February 2019

I was in class and saw your name on my phone and my stomach dropped. You were sending an inside joke. I couldn’t stop smiling. You were thinking of me. I was still part of your life. You invited me to a 3OH!3 concert in Des Moines. We planned the weekend around it. You cancelled two days before saying your professor moved an exam to a night exam instead. My heart hurt but not because I missed the concert. I wanted to see you. I told you I understood and that was our last message for awhile.

April 2019

We were texting off and on throughout the month, I told you I was seeing Bazzi and you told me I was killing it when I sent you a picture. I thought of you throughout the entire concert.

May 2019

We hang out when I get back from Ames. I crawled into your bed and buried my face into that blanket and was instantly at peace. I was with my person. You told me you were going to Israel to study abroad for a few weeks. You called me at 4am one night to tell me about following a couple random men to a club, telling me that you could’ve been killed but it was an adventure. We talked on the phone for an hour before saying goodbye until he was back home.

June-July 2019

We go mini golfing, we’re laughing and at complete ease. I never wanted it to end. Conversation didn’t drag, silence wasn’t uncomfortable, it was everything I thought love was. I knew I was in love with you. I’d always known but it was when we were eating our rolled ice cream afterward in comfortable silence that I knew I was completely in love with you. We spent the summer going through the motions of a relationship, neither of us addressing what things were.

August 2019:

I asked what we were, and you reiterated that we were best friends. I told you that I couldn’t handle doing romantic activities such as kissing and cuddling and talking about futures if we were never going to get there. I had upset you, and that was the last conversation we had for months.

March 2020:

I was sent home from school for COVID-19, I swiped through every dating app trying to find you. Did not look at pictures, if the person wasn’t named Austin I didn’t look twice. I found you on Bumble with your bio saying “msw uno” I gathered the courage to text you after not getting a match for weeks. I was terrified to text you, terrified you were still upset with me. I tried to keep it light hearted to test the waters and you came back with your usual responses. We fell back into our old patterns. I was in your bed many nights, pulling your blanket up to my chin for that sense of comfort of your smell. You said you got a job working as a dispatcher. I was happy for you, but hurt that we were going to be in two different places once again. Just once, I wanted it to be us.

April 2020

You texted me you moved to Lincoln to be closer to work and your friends. I asked you if you thought we would ever have a future, if you could even fathom me being your future. You told me you “definitely saw me” that way, but there was no way you were ready for a relationship or anything serious. We discussed staying friends.

May 2020:

You texted me on May 31st to come to your parents house. You said you missed me. I told you I couldn’t blur the lines anymore, it hurt too much to lose you every time you left again. You left the invitation open. I never went.

October 2020

I texted you about your favorite movie being on a girls backpack at work and referenced walle like we used to. You never responded. i was having a girls night with my friends, I asked to go through her social media’s because I didn’t have mine anymore and wanted to look at what people were up to. I saw your profile picture. I saw the ring on her finger. I couldn’t breathe. I took 8 of my friends xanax that night because I didn’t want to mentally aware that you were officially gone, that you officially decided that I was not the one you wanted. I took 3 days off work because I could not contain my crying. I was numb. my heart hurt. I was not good enough.

Just four months prior you texted me to come over. Just five months prior you told me you were not in any way shape or form ready for a relationship. Now you are engaged. Planning a life with someone. Envisioning the future with someone else when for the last 3 years I always thought it was going to be us. I always thought you’d come back when you were ready. You never did. I feel so many things. I can’t contain my feelings. Everyone is watching me with an eagles eye waiting for me to fully lose it. I sincerely hope you are happy. I just wish more than anything that it was with me. Me, the one to change your mind about relationships, change your mind about the lifestyle you wanted to have. I just wish more than anything that it was me.

offering behavior part 1: Hi, I read an ask you answered a while back about dogs who are (and I'm not remembering the exact wording) very motivated for things (food in this case) but are confused about what you want so they just start offering behaviors. I was wondering if you had any resources about how to correct this? I can't find the actual post now, and I tried looking up information about it, but I'm not sure I'm finding the resources I need. I don't use a clicker anymore but use "yes"

offering behavior 2: as the "click" sound instead. This worked well for us, but his behavior offering and getting worked has worsened to the point that I think it's too stressful for him to work him right now. Even with simple things that he knows well he starts offering everything under the sun if food is involved. If food isn't involved, he can be asked to do things he already knows no problem. Also,

offering behaviors 3: when treats come out, he gets progressively louder until its just him screaming and offering things in quick succession. I've tried ignoring him (which was the only thing the petsmart trainer suggested) and responding when he's quiet, but that never happens. It doesn't help that the nearest trainer (other than petsmart) is 45 min away which makes an assessment difficult bc car rides are stressful.

offering behaviors 4: Anyway, that was my very long winded way of asking if you have any resources on correcting this type of behavior training styles that might suit better? I was only ever exposed to clicker training, which did work well until we got to more complex things. Even of the answer is "go to the trainer 45 min away", thank you for reading through this ask, which was entirely too long, and for your feedback

My apologies for taking so long to get back to you- my computer time is fairly limited right now (moving into an actual place instead of bumming it at a friend’s mom’s house, health stuff, personal drama, the works) and the bulk of my blogging comes from snatches I get on my phone while out (also why I haven’t been able to do much of anything social media related).

I’d definitely take him to the trainer that’s going to be able to help you in person, you’ll be able to have someone evaluate him with eyes actually on him to confirm or deny what my suspicions are at least, and I’d value them more than a stranger online telling you what it could be from the text post.

I’d also ask @twobigears about the barking situation- I believe she had to deal with something similar with Ryker making quite a lot of noise during agility runs? I think the solution was to heavily discourage it by ending the run (and thus the “fun”) there and marching him out, rather than ignoring it and allowing him to continue to self-reinforce. I also do this with a few of my class dogs- if they insist on barking nonstop in class, they get marched out of class (or out of playtime) and taken to go potty and can only come back in when they’ve calmed down. Remember that barking is usually not a problem itself but a symptom of a problem- inappropriate vocalization is almost always from a dog experiencing an emotional high and being incapable of capping themselves in the moment, so it comes out as LOUD NOISE. I believe there’s a quote floating around somewhere that basically says they test to see if the dog can control themselves by correcting once for the vocalization. If the dog continues, then repeating the correction will not help because the dog is not capable of controlling themselves, and thus correcting for something the dog cannot control is not fair. At that point, you have to evaluate how you’re setting up the situation to see if the way you’re approaching it is what’s causing your problem, rather than focusing solely on the bad behavior you want to fix. Keep in mind that the correction we’re usually talking about is a verbal correction, not with a collar, or having the dog removed for a short while, or similar.

As I believe I said in that original post (which I also can’t find now???), most of the time a dog that is rapidfire offering behaviors is actually a stressed out dog that has no idea what you’re looking for and is flinging their entire collection of learned behaviors at you in hopes that you’re after one of them. This is also frequently a human-created problem and one that will likely need someone watching you to see how you could approach each training situation differently to calm your dog down and actually get what you’re looking for. Usually it’s an issue of clarity, of capping, and of impulse control, so a lot of little adjustments will go a long way!

Dogs that are riding these emotional highs are not dogs that can currently think. You cannot train a dog in the middle of an emotional high. You must bring the dog’s emotions back down to a more reasonable level before any learning can actually occur. If that means you change your whole setup, then that’s what it means. Hopefully the trainer that’s 45mins away can help you more in person!

Pet ownership comes with many perks. There’s the unconditional love, the furry cuddles, the companionship.

In 2018, it can also come with an added advantage that used to be relegated to dog show folk and whose ubiquitousness is surely a sign of our times: making a nice income from them. The catch, of course, is that the pet has to be famous. Instagram-famous.

Today, there are tons of pets who’ve gained enough of a following on social media to earn the coveted title “pet influencer,” and they can command tens of thousands of dollars creating content for brands. And it’s not just pet food companies and vacuum makers; fashion brands like Ralph Lauren and upscale hotel chains have written checks for four-legged talent to appear in their marketing too.

As the pet influencers field has gotten crowded, a cottage industry has sprung up to help pets — or their owners, at least — manage their newfound marketability. Loni Edwards is one such entrepreneur: For the past three years, she’s been running her talent management firm, the Dog Agency, working with “the most influential animals in the world.”

Edwards — whose dog, known on Instagram as Chloe the Mini Frenchie, amassed so many followers that her death last year made local news — knows that striking the jackpot in the pet influencer space isn’t as simple as just creating an Instagram account for your photogenic Labradoodle. I sat down with her over breakfast to talk about the business of being a pet influencer and how she avoids clients who treat their pets unethically.

First and foremost, how on earth did you get into this type of business?

Loni Edwards

I used to work as a lawyer, and was pretty unhappy. I quit my job and started a handbag company [with bags] that had phone-charging capabilities. Being an entrepreneur is pretty lonely, and so about five years ago, I got a dog to keep me company, Chloe. She was the cutest thing I’d ever seen, and I decided to start her own account so that I wouldn’t bombard people with photos of her five times a day.

She quickly amassed this large following. Within six months, she had 20,000 followers. People really liked her personality because I dressed her up and had her sitting next to me in business meetings. She was always smiling and was a sweet, adorable, ball of love, and her personality translated through the photos and by the way I wrote the copy.

Pretty soon, pet brands like PetSmart and Purina were reaching out to send us stuff and invite us to parties. I started meeting other pet owners, and realized there’s this new and growing pet influencer world. Every time I meet someone behind a celebrity pet and they’d hear I was a lawyer, they’d ask me for help on the contracts, to read over the terms and agreements they had to sign from brands. It seemed like this was a perfect way to match my legal background and obsession with pets.

What are your daily tasks as a celebrity pet manager?

I help grow a brand, whether it’s deciding if they should write a book or branching out in terms of content. I also connect them to the right companies and people. A lot of it is acting on behalf of owners. Brands used to DM pet owners, who have full-time jobs and couldn’t coordinate details. They also couldn’t negotiate rates or read a contract. It was a mess. Now I have relationships with both clients and the brands, so I have a standard of how to run things, and I take commission.

Do you help pets become famous?

No. We’re super selective as to who we assign as a client, so they have to have a large following, they have to have really good engagement, and they have to have good-quality content. We take an influencer that has already proven themselves and then bring them to that.

Can any pet become famous? Like, can a basic golden retriever really become a star?

Loni Edwards

The way pets become famous is all different, but what they have in common is that they stand apart to develop a following. So either they’re very unique-looking, or the copy is super witty — as long as there’s something, whether it’s that they are insanely cute or really not cute, that make people go, “oh my God,” and tag their friends.

Ella Bean is basically a fashion blogger in dog form. The fashion community loves her. Popeye the Foodie is LA’s hottest foodie, who takes photos in front of amazing dishes. Food bloggers love him. Harlow and Sage, who are these two dogs that just cuddle all the time. Wolfgang, who is a guy that takes in all these senior pets and is the sweetest guy to follow. We just signed this cat, Bruno, who went viral because he is fat. Like, really fat.

Yes, we work with pigs, monkeys, hedgehogs.

What are some unique challenges you think people in the pet influencer space face?

Loni Edwards

Pets can’t work as many hours as a human. They need breaks, they get tired, and so we have to explain that to brands all the time. “No, the dog can’t do a five-hour meet-and-greet!” Sometimes, it also takes longer to create content because you can’t communicate with the dog to tilt their head this way. They’re not as human as we think.

What was it like to get brands on board?

Loni Edwards

Human-facing brands totally didn’t get it. When I started the agency, my first big focus was meeting with brands and convincing them that working with pet influencers made sense. I got a lot of looks. But Chloe would come to all the meetings, and so she helped sell the idea. They would look at her and see and feel a connection.

The first brand I worked with was Dyson. I had to convince them, but it totally made sense for me because dogs shed, and we clean up after them. I had similar pitches when I went to the Body Shop and Urban Decay. These are brands that don’t test on animals, so why wouldn’t they work with pets?

Same with Ritz-Carlton, since they are pet-friendly — of course they should want pet influencers staying at their hotels in Aruba and Puerto Rico, showing followers that it’s a pet-friendly hotel chain. Now, we work with brands like Dyson, Sony, Coke, Ralph Lauren, Barney’s, Moda Operandi, Neiman Marcus.

What are the prices for a pet to land in a brand campaign?

Loni Edwards

The price varies and is usually tied to your follower number, where a scale of, say, 100,000 followers will get you a few hundred dollars and up. I have clients who have a few million followers and are getting $15,000 per post. There are a few variables to factor in, like if they’re creating video, because that’s a higher cost. People also make money off book deals and merch.

Does the price vary when clients are posting on Instagram versus Instagram story?

Loni Edwards

Yes, story posts are less money than in-feed posts. So someone with 1 million followers would get a couple thousand dollars for a story post, instead of their usual $15,000 post. We are mainly creating content on Instagram, with a little Facebook and YouTube.

I don’t understand why pets commend such a price, no offense. Why are they this valuable?

Loni Edwards

People like to look at pets on social media. Pets raise endorphins and makes people feel happy. They are adorable to look at and are easier to connect with than human influencers. There’s no barrier like jealousy. You can gush, “Oh my god, you’re the cutest little terrier” in a comment without feeling weird. It’s weird. to gush over a stranger.

As a society, we’ve evolved that we now think of our pets as our children. They’re such an important part of our lives, and that also has helped this become such a huge and important space. Human-facing brands want to work with pet influencers because they want to show that they align on the values of their consumer, and their consumer loves pets.

Do you find that people are buying animals specifically to make money off them on Instagram?

I do get a lot of requests from people who ask me to help get their pet famous. I get inquiries about what type of dogs people should buy, based on what is most likely to become an influencer and make money. They want to know, “[If] I get a dog that’s missing an eye, will they become an influencer?”

How do you make sure you aren’t working with an owner that’s abusing their pet for fame? Like Toddler and Tiaras but, you know, fur and fortune?

Loni Edwards

It’s definitely become a thing. Since pet influencers have become more common, people are actively trying to make it happen for them, and all they care about is capitalizing on their pet. We do not work with those people.

But how can you tell?

Loni Edwards

Oh, it is so easy to tell. You can tell when someone is hugging and kissing their pet, and asking to take breaks so they can give their animal a drink or something to eat or a chance to run around. The pet looks happy. It’s very different from the people that are yelling at their pet, “Sit! Stay! We’re getting a shot!” You can tell when all they care about is getting the photos so they can get paid. I can also tell by the way people write an email if they are in it for the right reasons.

So what are the right reasons to you?

Loni Edwards

The right reasons are loving their pet. Being able to spend more time with them, being able to work with awesome brands that they love, and getting a middle or main income doing it. The pets enjoy this too, you know. Some pets love dressing up; others love meeting people.

Do you think it’s wrong to want to make money off your pet?

It’s not wrong if you want to make money; it’s wrong to be in it if you pet doesn’t want to do it and you’re forcing them. Some dogs just want to be dogs. And at the end of the day, it has to be good experience for the pet too. It can’t be about being forced to act and perform so you can buy more clothes.

What’s some advice you would give to someone who has a pet with a following and wants to monetize?

Loni Edwards

You want to be consistent and find the one thing that stands out about them, whether it’s if the dog is really funny or you are really funny but the dog is cute. Anyone can take photos and put them on the internet; it takes effort to develop a strong brand and to consistently engage with people and be the front of that community. A consistent brand voice is the most important.

This year, for the second time, we’re running an event, PetCon. It’s on Saturday and Sunday, November 17 and 18, at the Javits Center [in New York City]. It’s a big pet event. There will be meet-and-greets with celebrity pets, brand shops, a dog adoption garden, an adoptable cat café, and a panel with the Animal Legal Defense Fund about malpractice and protecting your pets.

MERCED, California—Nita Vue’s parents, refugees from Laos, wanted all nine of their children go to college. But Nita, now 20, is the only one of her brothers and sisters who is going to get a degree. A few of her sisters began college, and one nearly completed nursing school, she told me. Her brothers were less interested. “The way I grew up, the girls were more into schooling,” she said. “Women tended to have higher expectations than men did.”

This is not unusual. Across socioeconomic classes, women are increasingly enrolling and completing postsecondary education, while, even as opportunities for people without a college education shrink, men’s rates of graduation remain relatively stagnant. In 2015, the most recent year for which data is available, 72.5 percent of females who had recently graduated high school were enrolled in a two-year or four-year college, compared to 65.8 percent of men. That’s a big difference from 1967, when 57 percent of recent male high-school grads were in college, compared to 47.2 percent of women.

Women from low-income and minority families especially have made great strides in recent decades. Just 12.4 percent of men from low-income families who were high-school sophomores in 2002 had received a bachelor’s degree by 2013, compared to 17.6 percent of women. And in 2016, 22 percent of Hispanic women ages 25 to 29 had a bachelor’s degree, compared to 16 percent of Hispanic men.

(While poor women are outpacing poor men, it is important to note that in the big picture, poor women are nevertheless far behind their richer counterparts. About 70 percent of women from a high socioeconomic status who were high school sophomores in 2002 had gotten bachelor’s degrees by 2013, compared to 17.6 percent of women from low socioeconomic status.)

This gender gap in college completion has been a long time in the making. In the early 1900s, when some elite colleges started opening up to women, women quickly got better grades than men, according to Claudia Buchmann, a professor of sociology at Ohio State and the co-author of The Rise of Women: The Growing Gender Gap in Education and What it Means for American Schools. In the 1970s, as more women started attending college, they started graduating at higher and higher rates, while men’s enrollment and graduation rates remained relatively flat. But until recently, the women attending college were mostly from elite families. Now, women from lower-income families are increasingly attending college.

This is a positive development for women, because a college education is increasingly important in today’s economy. Out of the 11.6 million jobs created after the recession, 8.4 million of those went to those with at least a bachelor’s degree, according to the Center on Education and the Workforce at Georgetown. But while women across socioeconomic classes are embracing the idea that education is important and are pursuing postsecondary degrees, many men from lower-income households are not. “The puzzle is—why don’t boys get it? There’s all this talk that we hear constantly, about the benefits of a college degree,” said Buchmann.

Some of the problem is that boys from low-income families appear to struggle more in school than girls do. They lag behind as early as kindergarten even though health tests show that, at the time of birth, they are just as healthy and cognitively able to learn as their sisters, a recent paper found. This is partly because they appear to be more affected by poverty and stress than girls are. “Boys are differentially sensitive to negative environments in general,” one of the paper’s authors, Northwestern professor David Figlio, told me. These findings dovetail with much-cited research out of the Equality of Opportunity Project that finds that childhood disadvantage is especially harmful for boys.

School quality is also more important for boys than for girls, Figlio said, and since many low-income families attend poor-quality schools, their sons, who are already lagging behind their daughters, fall even further behind. The paper found that lower-income boys often do worse in elementary and middle school than their sisters, and have more behavioral problems, which can lead them to disengage with school entirely or get kicked out.

Nita Vue told me she was always set on college, even when she was in grade school. Neither of her parents has a college education, and neither has worked recently, but they encouraged all of their children to focus on school. Nita, who is now a junior at the University of California-Merced, would come home from school and read while her siblings were listening to music. She always had good grades, and graduated from high school with a 4.0 grade point average. In general, her sisters did better academically than her brothers did, her mother, Mai Kao Vue, told me. “The girls were more into schooling, and the boys were more outgoing,” she said.

What is it about girls? The differences start young: Girls enter kindergarten more prepared than boys, and derive more satisfaction from pleasing parents and teachers than boys do, according to Buchmann. In one study, 62 percent of eighth-grade girls said that good grades were “very important,” compared to 50 percent of boys, according to Buchmann and her co-author Thomas DiPrete. Girls also have more of the social and behavioral skills that are important for succeeding in school from an early age, Buchmann said.

Boys often feel pressured to act “masculine,” which can lead them to eschew school —one study showed that boys put a lot of effort into school are often labeled as “gay” or “pussies.” Yet boys who don’t buy into those stereotypes and participate in music, dance, or art, do better than other boys academically in eighth grade, according to Buchmann and DiPrete. Those different levels of engagement can make a difference for college attendance: students who reported getting mostly As in middle school have a 70 percent chance of completing college by age 25, while those who get mostly Cs have only a 10 percent chance.

How parents raise children can exacerbate these dynamics. Pressures to be “masculine” are often stronger in lower-income or working-class families, Buchmann says. “The notion of what it means to be a boy and a man, especially among lower working-class boys, makes it such that they see doing well in school as something that girls and women do, and they don’t want any part of it,” Buchmann told me. This is especially true if boys see male role models like fathers or older family members working physical, blue-collar jobs that don’t require an education. They may assume that they’ll be able to work those jobs too, even if they’re disappearing, and think that doing anything else is too “girly.” By contrast, if boys have role models that are educated, they do better in school. Better-educated parents often teach their children a different concept of masculinity in which academic achievement is important. Moreover, they are more likely to know men in careers that require an education, and to have those men as their role models.

Nita’s brother, Por Vue, who is now 28, told me he thought he was deeply affected by his family’s lack of knowledge about the educational system. He actually applied to and was accepted into Cal State Monterey Bay, but his parents advised him to instead go to a junior college closer to home, he told me. But the junior college was overcrowded and he couldn’t get into many of the classes he wanted, so had to change his major. Then, while he was in college, he started a family, and later dropped out so he could support his wife and kids. He’s now a manager at PetSmart, where he makes around $13 an hour. “I think if I’d had a better family background, I would have had knowledge that other people had, and I would have been able to go further,” he told me.

Boys may also be more susceptible to short-term instant gratification than girls are, Buchmann told me. Boys may have a harder time slogging away at a college degree and paying for it when they know there are jobs available where they could get paid a decent wage, even if that job might not be a long-term proposition. I talked to a 31-year-old in Merced named Edward Vasquez who was one-and-a-half years into a two-year nursing program when he dropped out to take a job as a certified nursing assistant that paid $17.50 an hour. He’s since lost his job and is looking for work.

This is not to say that men can’t succeed if they don’t have a college education. I talked to a woman named Olga Jimenez who was raised by a single mother, and who went to college when her brothers didn’t. But her brother has still made a good career as a real-estate agent, and has a license and his own office, she told me. Meanwhile, Olga had to work three jobs at once while she attended Whittier College and is still paying off her college debt.

Yet Jimenez’s brother is the exception, not the rule. People with just a high-school diploma make, on average, $692 a week, compared to $1,156 for those with a bachelor’s degree. And the returns of a college education have grown over time. People with a bachelor’s degree or higher earn 14 percent more than they did in 1979, on average, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics; people with a high school degree earn 12 percent less.

As the gender gap grows, there are wider implications for society. People are more likely to pair with others who have a similar educational background; as more women get postsecondary degrees than men, women will increasingly find their marriage prospects dimming. This is already happening in some areas of the country—I wrote in May about a town in Ohio where the women complained that all the men were on drugs or unemployed, while the women held down steady jobs. Their daughters will face a similar future, unless they can get their sons to succeed at—and care about—school.

Week-End Update: Hazy Days of Summer

Another week is over with a bunch more dogs saved and a few more adopted. All in all, that makes for a good week here at TLC. Our boy Jacques’s foster family fell in love with him immediately so, to paraphrase Beyonce, they put a name tag on it and now he’s a full fledged member of the family!

“Yes, she’s settling in well! She loves her dog bed (photos below) and relaxing in the house (must love the AC!). She also has some fun running around in the backyard! She is very smart and lets me know when she wants to go outside by going near the sliding glass doors. She’s also gotten used to my schedule with going to the bathroom, work, sleep etc. I taught her to sit in order to get a treat in just 1 day! She now does it right away. I plan to teach her a few more commands, working on ‘stay’ right now. She has been very well behaved, very gentle and friendly towards people, and has gotten along with most dogs (petsmart and pet store visits; holding off on bringing her to work for another week).

I have kept her name Lucy but also have her the nickname of Lulu. So Lucy ‘Lulu’ is on her new dog tag.”

He is going through training with the woman I used to train my beloved mastiff, Cooper, and has his level 1 test this Thursday.

“We changed his name to Flint. He seems to be taking to the home quite nicely. My vet did not have any openings until next week, so unfortunately I won’t be getting him in as soon as I would like to. “She is doing really well. We changed her name to Reese. We have an apt on Sunday for her first vet visit. She has been such a welcome addition to our family. “We are changing Ivory’s name to Dolly. It just seems to fit her personality. She’s doing ok. Has a serious thing about shoes but is not chewing them. Dolly collects them and moves them to another room. Maybe this will train certain people to put them away?

Dolly has the first appointment I could get with our vet so that is scheduled. Also her first obedience class begins with Peppers Paws and Eryn on July 19th. I am looking forward to this. We are still working on sit.

“We have changed his name to LUPO. He has been perfect!

We have been taking him for walks 4-5 times a day and he is great on the leash and has not had one accident in the house so far, knock on wood. I have put a crate in our bedroom with the door open, but he seems to like his dog bed better. He also never cries when we leave in the morning or at lunch. The only strange thing so far is that he poops almost everytime we walk him. It was soft at first but has been getting better. I think maybe we gave him too much food to begin with, but have cut it back to a cup a day now.

He has been barking at people and other dogs while walking, but it seems to be getting better.

We found a local vet with great reviews and scanned and sent them Lupo’s records: http://sheehanveterinarycentre.com/. We have an appointment on Thursday.

I believe Erin updated his name and address online and we got him a new tag.

I want to thank you and Erin so much for your help. I feel like other shelters may have looked down upon us simply because we have a Camden City address while your shelter responsive and so nice since the beginning. “Everything has been going so well with Kona (FKA Nugget), and I can’t believe it’s already been 6 months! She is such a sweet dog and loves to greet everyone and anyone. She loves to sleep, which means she’s also the best cuddler. She loves going on car rides and I try and take her everywhere, including an upcoming road trip to Charleston, SC and Shenandoah Valley, VA. She also loves to be outside and lay in the sunshine. “Elvis is doing great. He loves going camping with us. He gets to meet other dogs and people too. He’s very friendly and playful to both. He now weighs around 90 lbs and is very strong but also gentle. We certainly are happy to have him as part of our family. Super Major Life Update lol

1. March 10, 2016 was the day I found out I was diabetic and the day I quit eating meat. It has now been 14 months since I quit and it definitely paid off. I’m down 28lbs. My A1C level has lowered. I feel so much better overall. Best decision I ever made. I still eat fish, but it is so sparingly now I feel I can quit that too. Maybe sometime soon. 2. I got fired from Petsmart. I was so fckd up over it because I genuinely loved my job and the salon associates. I was devastated until I found a position as a mobile groomer. I now make a ton more money, I make my own schedule, the customers tip well and I’m happy. I made a grooming page on IG (yggrooms) and it’s slowly but surely gaining me clientele. I’m so sure about this job that… 3. I’m going back to school. Originally, right after high school, my major was vet tech. I went to the gen eds but didn’t give a fck cause it was my first year and I bullshitted. I applied to the program and didn’t get in. I applied again and didn’t get in. An academic advisor said to fix my transcript to make it more appealing, I did, applied, and didn’t get in. By this time I had started grooming. I found my passion in that because generally all I wanted to do was work with animals. I do that now. So, I’m switching my major to chemical engineering. I know, such a contrast from vet tech but I need something to fall back on if a dog bites me the wrong way some day. Also, this job has literally no benefits. I’m legally self employed. If I’m off work, I’m just off. No sick days. No vacation days. No pto. If I’m off, I just miss out on a days worth of money. I mean, it’s good now but not for the future family I hope to create. I was gonna pursue math but like 3 more classes I’d get an engineering degree and like 5 more classes I can have a chemical concentration so I'ma get my associates degree and then transfer to Morgan. I go back this fall. I'ma stay focused. 4. My love life is a fckn disaster LMAO. After I stopped dating Koya I started fckn with this girl named Michelle. All was good, but I felt like she just wanted to fck me and nothing else because I never fckd a girl and she wanted to be my first. I’m just like, damn can you get to know me first? I’m a great person! Lmao but that wasn’t her focus. So despite my initial attraction to her, I was turned off. And, after the shit I found out about her, I’m glad I didn’t fck her lol. I started fckn with this guy but his ass was way too old to be acting how he was acting so I stopped fckn with him. I very briefly kinda talked to this girl I worked at Petsmart with but I think my attraction was a “I can save her” one and she clearly ain’t want saving lol. We still chat and flirt. She wants to take me out on a picnic. I don’t think I'ma go lol. Before all them, and kinda during all them, is R. R is a guy I started fckn like seven years ago after I broke up with my ex. Initially, all we did was fck to make up for the nonexistent sex life I had in my relationship and that’s all I wanted. For like two (maybe three) of those years he had a girlfriend, which I respected, so I started fckn other niggas. We reconnected on a dating app and we fckd same week. I started to like him. I mean, I’m kinda ready for a relationship so I relay that to him since he stated that if I had mentioned it before he wouldn’t have gotten with the girl he was with. But I knew he wouldn’t be ready for a relationship so he said we could “build a foundation”. I’m thinking, communication, consistency, dates, ya know, foundation building type shit. I barely heard from this nigga unless we was fckn. If I asked a question it was a problem. It just wasn’t right, and my feelings was involved. So I cut him off. Obviously I was wrong for that. So I told him maybe we could just fck and that’s it. I was wrong for that. So I cut him off again. I invited him to my goddaughter’s grandmother’s birthday party, he came. I got drunk. We discussed some shit. I ended up “wasting his time”. He cut me off. I was basically kissing ass. I got tired of that. The communication lacked. I cut him off again. He said he loved me and that he’d do anything to make it right but I knew it was bullshit. I stood by my words but I couldn’t get him off my mind for shit. Even while fckn with another guy, Dre. I met Dre on a dating website lol. I like him a lot but I think something wrong with me lol. R just fcks me so well. Like, so so well. Our sexual chemistry is perfect. Everything else is off. Dre is a good guy, we had sex once but I was sleepy. Like, dead sleepy, so I couldn’t get into it. I’m pretty sure he’s a great lay but I’m stuck on dumb ass R. It pisses me off. Dre was perfect at first but now he’s just like R. No communication. No consistency. And I know it’s because he was laid off and is finally back working and playing bill catch up but still. I’m trying to be understanding. And I do care about him. But I work EVERY DAY. I still find time to attempt to check on him only to not get a response. I suggest going out. He can’t. I even offered to pay, because I know he’s behind and I’m thinking he don’t want to go out simply because he has to put his money toward bills. Nope. It’s just, I’m not getting what I want and it leads me back to R because hey, at least I’m guaranteed a nut our seven. And the longevity is there. But I’m not about to be fckn a nigga I have feelings for for another seven fckn years because he’s not ready for a relationship. ***I should pause this update to mention that R just left. I done put this post in my drafts like seven times lol. But, we fckd. I moaned “I hate you” in his ear, he told me I didn’t mean that and fckd me harder. I really do hate him. Prior to the sex, I told him we should just be friends and then see what happens. We hashed out our issues I guess. He told me he can’t be my friend. Said we were already friends. I said no we aren’t. He kept touching me. His touch makes me weak. He knows this. I wanted it. Bad. Before he even came over. I knew that’s what I wanted. But I put up a “fight” because I know he don’t deserve it. But I knew I was gonna give it to him anyway. Something is truly wrong with me smh. Anyway, I’m not gonna stop seeing Dre if he ever comes back around. Well once he get his shit together on his end financially. Our connection isn’t completely lost, he’s just working hard to get back on top of bills and I understand that. I of all people know what it’s like to not have money. Hell, I’ve even given him money toward small shit like gas and food. I should mention that when I met him he wasn’t like this lol. He was on his shit. But his job is contractual. He was out of work for a month due to it ending and the next contract not starting when it was supposed to. So, I get it. I just want him to catch up and come back to me. I think it’s something there that’s worth exploring. I know me and R will never do more than fck. And if we attempted a relationship, it won’t work. He’s a Pisces. My ex is a Pisces. I’m a Pisces. Pisces-Pisces is a horrible pair to began with. Ironically, our sexual desires are mutual which is basically what keeps up from completely quitting each other. Like I said, a fckn disaster lol. 5. I found out the “straightest” girl I know has an attraction to women. I’m literally still reeling over that lol. Me personally, I think gender attraction is fluid but I think I may be going based off my own experiences. It wasn’t until Koya that I even ever had an attraction to women lol. After her, I’ve just been neutral about it. I wouldn’t consider myself bi lol. Just, idk, not gonna miss out on someone or something real because they’re the same gender as myself. Not finna block my blessings lol. But there’s always that girl that you could never imagine wanting to be with another girl, until she text you about her there is a girl that makes her wet and she wants to taste her. Changes your whole perspective lol. 6. One of my brothers has a baby on the way. Or possibly has a baby on the way. I don’t care, but the fact kills me because they’re incompetent. Both not capable of raising a child because he’s only 19, jobless, and didn’t complete highschool. She’s, just as lacking. My mom is about to be a grandparent to the child of the child that caused her the most grief and pain due to his actions. I just pray they don’t drive her insane. I can’t stand seeing her stressed. They’re taking a paternity test, am I wrong for hoping it isn’t his? 7. Ever since my other brother moved to PA, we don’t talk. I keep up with him from his daily snapchats. We text every now and then about our dysfunctional family but that’s it. He’s changed. He smokes weed now, drinks constantly, and just lives recklessly. My mom doesn’t know. He flaunts all this money around on social media but always cries broke to her. On Mother’s Day he came down and bought my mom a card and flowers. That’s it. Might I mention he didn’t even read the card long enough to see that was a Happy Nurse’s Day card and not one for the occasion. She didn’t care. She was happy to see him. I got her a discovery flight experience, took her to a comedy show and paid for everything, plus flowers, chocolate, and a card. She was excited for that too, but it’s evident he’s still the golden child. Despite everything, and the wrong he’s done, he can still do no wrong. Baffling. I truly don’t think this is an issue with my mom, but with my brother. He does the bare minimum every birthday and Mother’s Day while I go above and beyond and the gratitude is the same. And he makes the money to do something more meaningful for her. I want to do what he do but I just, she’s our mother. I think she can get more than a card and some flowers every damn holiday. Maybe I’m just jealous. I miss the old him. 8. While at Petsmart me and a coworker adopted a 12 year old Jack Russell terrier from a lady who had to move in with her mom at a nursing home so she couldn’t take him with her. He had a slew of health problems but he stole our hearts so we couldn’t resist, plus, a shelter would have killed him. His name was Dinks. We coparented him for 6 months before he died on my dad’s birthday in September. We were heartbroken. I mean, it tore me to pieces. I cried so damn hard and she did too. It took a minute for us to recover. He had dermatitis so he used to thump his back leg on his front leg to scratch himself. For a long while after his passing I’d still hear little ghost thumps. He was just so perfect and I wish I could’ve spent an eternity with him. I’ll never forget the little dude. Since then, she adopted a coonhound from a shelter and I adopted a chihuahua mix from a lady on Craigslist. We’re both happy with our new pets but Dinks still has a place in our hearts. Maybe this post will have a part two but that’s my life in a nutshell. A fckn mess with a few good things. I might go back to my daily posts but I had to put this somewhere so I can clear my head space. My mind just runs rampant with all the things and I have to put it somewhere or it’ll be cluttered lol. This public post is basically for me lol. But, you’re welcome.
