"Since you've named yourself after Julius fucking Caesar, perhaps I'll follow in your lead and choose one of the conspirators." "Interesting," says Giuliano. "Should I worry about finding you at the center of some kind of conspiracy that ends with my death?" "Not from me," replies Ascanio. He sounds tired. "Not anymore."
informally, some kind of. conversational follow up to the last comic. I'm trying to get the atmospheric conversational whimsy out of my system because I have a vision of the vatican as a body in active decay, a point of infection spreading out and poisoning the well, a jaw unhinged that people walk into over and over, and I am so close to figure out how to convey this visually. maybe.
#not that there's anything wrong with atmospheric whimsy but i kind of want to get into the gross body horror of it all#literally. allegorically. for the vibes. its just hard to pin down the abstract thought of 'oh we should High Rise the Vatican' you know#(High Rise by JG Ballard is what i'm referring to here) like how do I achieve this. well. first. is i must lay out the vatican and become#intimate with the visual set pieces. then i can talk about how this building could literally be hazardous to your health#however. drawing the vatican. is very. uhhhh. man I do not know enough about medieval-renaissance architecture to be inventing#anything and that one book that collected interiors of rooms and houses in renaissance art is NEVER ANYWHERE EVER#and if it is then it's always around when i cannot afford it. i feel like i am in a specific kind of torment torture box#i will not be defeated tho. i can design a vatican through other means.#ANYWAY. i think antidepressants would've made ascanio an unstoppable menace in the vatican#there's a bunch of stuff being referenced here but my pdf reader does not want to cooperate with me so basically we're playing around with#ascanio's household staff (alessandro) that whole thing wrt to ascanio & acts of piety/charity (such as covering dowries etc)#uh. that's it! this time i didn't accidentally call giuliano by his brother's name. which is . sherhhg. so there's a fic i was writing.#italian renaissance tag#komiks tag

so here's my honest thoughts on dragon age: the veilguard, after ~40 hours of playing. i finished the main quest after having finished all companion quests and major faction quests. just to clear up what content i saw, i played as an elven transmasc rook who is a member of the lords of fortune. he romanced lucanis (although after finishing the game i'm now leaning towards taash). i don't know what's happening in playthroughs that have a different race, gender identity, romance or faction going on.
full spoilers ahead, i mean it. don't read further if you want to avoid them. i don't want complaining about it in my asks.
oh and also, if you're worried because of a few negative reviews online i can comfort you by saying don't give a fuck about a certain big name youtuber who is very much tied to bethesda franchises giving this a negative review. i'll explain why.
i'm starting off with the things i liked
the game looks really pretty. i was worried it wouldn't feel like thedas anymore (with them trying to "focus on northern thedas only" i thought they'd make a clear cut in environmental design. they do and they don't. it's complicated. i'll elaborate on it when talking about the negative stuff). anyway it does. minrathous feels like kirkwall. treviso enchanted me like the winter palace did. the hossberg wetlands reminded me of the hinterlands and a couple other inquisition maps. arlathan looked like... arlathan. the crossroads were different, but familiar. overall i like the way it looks and feels. it's thedas, with a twist. it's a good one, and gives everything a solid but unique feel.
combat is top tier. if you're a hardcore dragon age player you WILL miss the tactical aspect of it for a bit, but i promise you, once you're used to the way the combat works, you will be lapping that shit up. and once you get to ability combos you'll mourn the control you used to have over your companions in battle a bit less
the MAIN quest and its story. i expected worse, way worse. and for a while the game even had me tricked (harr harr you'll get it in a second) it is Really That Much Worse. but holy shit was it good. i walked away satisfied ngl.
your choices have SOLID weight. there's consequences, good AND bad. i got minrathous blighted, ruled over by venatori, and the leader of the shadow dragons ultimately died because of my decisions. i made those at the beginning and throughout the game. he died at the end. DAVRIN died because i didn't expect what i was saying to have that much weight. i thought i was in the clear. he had hero status. well turns out, your choices can still get your companions killed even if you do everything right. i fucking love him. he shouldn't have made that sacrifice just because i told him to do everything it takes once.
the inquisitor, morrigan and dorian being there, surprisingly. there's also negatives to this though, see below.
speaking of companions dying and the inquisitor playing a bigger role: the final quest feels like me2's suicide mission. i was blown away by it and the fact that i got to see the results of all my efforts playing out in front of me.
bioware are NOT trying to redeem solas. they love him as a character yes, but i wasn't forced to see any good in him. he betrays you. he fucked my rook over twice. he fucked him over right back, for good this time (the veil wasn't torn down, i anchored it by binding him to it, he's doomed to uphold it). but solas really lives up to his name as the trickster elven god. rip to all the people who grew really attached to him over the years.
varric died. if you like him that's probably as hard reading it as it was watching it. varric died and the game lies about it until the very end. when the realisation hits, it hurts. but in the very best way.
the amount of care they put into gender expression and trans identities this time around. (i'll add onto this with negative points as well too).
rook feels very much ingrained in the world of thedas. he doesn't ask questions that expose the player to lore through dialogue as if he's stepped foot into thedas for the first time. those conversations feel very solid and good. i hope other faction players got as much joy out of this as i did.
and the things i didn't like and boy there's a lot unfortunately
the music. let's just get that out of the way holy shit. it doesn't feel like it belongs in this universe. it gets so incredibly sci-fi-y at times you'd think it's taken straight from mass effect andromeda. there's not a single song unique to veilguard that i really enjoyed. it broke my immersion, real bad. hearing a busker play the tavern songs from inquisition on a lute right after i killed some venatori with wobbly bass songs playing in the background is just odd. weird tonal shift. don't like it. it's made for people who like flashy light-weight cinema.
tevinter nights is required reading. the podcasts are required listening exercises. the game is so fast paced, especially at the start, that there's no time to introduce you to characters and how much weight their names carry in-game. i would not have known who half these people are if i hadn't skimmed over tevinter nights. i'd care even less about them than i already did. there is no time to get properly attached to them. people will act as if you're talking to a legend personified and you'll be thinking man goddamn which chapter of tevinter night were they in again and what did they do???
there's a weird mismatch with the animations. you'll have beautifully fluid ones, like emmrich casting spells. and then you'll have rook's face animating in the most unnatural manner that's sorta reminiscent of mass effect andromeda's "my face is tired" addison, when their emotions SHOULD be landing with the player rn instead.
i'm not vibing with the art style. sometimes it works. most of the time it doesn't. at points i felt like i was watching tangled.
that also brings me to some of the dialogue. same issue. i am watching frozen. i am watching tangled. someone on the writer's team really likes the adorkable trope. bellara is its victim.
for all the talk about identity, bioware sure doesn't like theirs. the grey warden armor got a redesign again and it just makes them look like a generic army. i hate it lol
in general, i don't like the armor design. the wardrobe/appearances system is fine, but it's just not helping if all the armors are just... kinda bland or downight bad looking? and don't get me started on the lords of fortune armor. that is orientalism personified.
the world states should have been carried over, full stop. i know they said they didn't because they want to separate what happens in the north from what happens in the south, which... i could have lived with that. but the inquisitor sends you letters that keep you up to date on... the south of thedas. you learn that there's a blight again, that people are standing strong but it's difficult, denerim's fallen, the rulers are taking care of it, orlais is fighting and they're successful for a while, etc etc. what's good bioware. i thought we don't care about the south this time around. why are you feeding me so much boring generic information. if you're not gonna show any of it and just write letters, then carrying the world state over should not have been an issue. i have a game dev background. those few lines of code would not have broken your budget or pushed your engine's limits. fuck right off.
this gripe of mine carries over to all the cameos. as a lord of fortune you have to deal with isabela a lot. it's fun. i missed her. you get to go drinking with her and taash and bellara! also my hawke romanced her. she's not mentioned once. they had the opportunity to put a sentence or two about her in there with not a lot of effort, trust me.
when varric dies, all she has is a single line about it. for gold, for fortune, for varric. she only says it if you interact with her on your way to the final push. that's not mandatory.
morrigan is there. kieran isn't. the old god soul that mythal and then solas absorbed? who cares at this point, the gods are dead now and solas is locked away for eternity. i suppose? why is morrigan there. she feels unneeded. i wish they'd just left her down south, at least that way i wouldn't have had to witness her god awful redesign.
dorian at least feels as if he belongs in this story. the shadow dragons are a crucial part to protecting minrathous. he's also weirdly underutilised. isabela and morrigan had more lines than him in my playthrough.
on the topic of romance: bro that was underwhelming. no, genuinely. you know when romance picked up a bit? after the point of no return. i heard maybe two lines of companion banter about it before that. maybe i missed something which i honestly doubt, but romance did not play much of a role in lucanis's storyline. i saved his grandmother as he wished me to (and if you read tevinter nights you know she was rather abusive and their relationship not the healthiest) and told him to focus on his family. a reunified family my rook wasn't even introduced to as a partner at the end of all that.
really, do not buy this game if you're only in it for the romances. others might be better, lucanis's basically gave me nothing. except for an outing (the second coffee date i had with him, it was getting repetitive) all of it played out once i committed to the final quest. the sex scene was a fade to black. annoyingly right after davrin died. if you're looking for well paced and good spice, pick up something else. the sweet talk and the final goodbye were nice though.
for all the good the ever-presence of gender identity does, it is brought up in such a disruptive manner too. it doesn't even play out naturally if you CHOOSE the lines that are meant to be said. hearing the words trans and non-binary in this setting doesn't feel right, and i'm saying this as a trans guy. i think it could have been handled more gracefully. the amount of times my rook went "i'm a MAN" as if he's about to start drumming on his chest and roaring any second now got super nerve-grating. "i'm so glad you're into me... the me who is trans. remember?" just. tell me one trans person who'd talk like that to a person they've grown close with and are trying to romance. this game doesn't handle sexuality well, so all this hey my body might not look like the way you're expecting it to look talk amounts to nothing anyway. i feel about this the way i feel about krem: this is partial exposition to trans experiences... packaged up for cis consumption. the ONLY exception to that is interacting with taash. holy shit was all of that heartwarming and bro did it feel good and natural to talk to them about theirs and rook's gender.
rivain and nevarra are new locations added by veilguard. they're also incredibly underwhelming, small and constricted maps. rivain is a coastline with a few ruins. the hall of valor is a partial ruin nestled into a cave on a beach, with a fighting pit. isabela is there in her skimpy outfit commentating your pit fights. that's it. i'm sorry if you were looking for a bustling pirate cove or whatever. you're not gonna get it. the nevarran crypts btw are a long ass dungeon crawl. that's it.
speaking of maps. i thought people were being dramatic when they said you're gonna be fighting the same enemies on them again and again. i thought they were figure of speeching it. they're not. you WILL fight the same amount of enemies. in the same spot. every time you reload the map. best to stay on a map and clear out the enemies and do as much questing on that map as you can before leaving, because you WILL have to do it all over again once you return.
the three choices i made for my inquisitor didn't matter lol she didn't have to face solas and therefore couldn't stop him at any cost as she had sworn (maybe because my rook tricked solas into binding himself to the veil, there was also an option to fight him. would she have stepped in? who knows). blackwall wasn't mentioned. and either her using a small amount of her forces in the final fight was the reason the civilians of minrathous fared so well..... or it just didn't matter. ultimately i think she had very little impact on anything
#datv#datv spoilers#dragon age: the veilguard#oh wow i hit a limit typing this#anyway to tie this up a bit: the good and bad to the environmental design being that well-known architecture like minrathous and dwarven#ruins look fire and remind me a lot of the previous games#but newly added locations are very... generic... very bland#i was very excited for rivain. i thought we'd get to see ships. not a bunch of ruins and a fighting pit and that's it#and why did i say to ignore a certain guy's review? bro because he was complaining about taash being ace and that taking up their screentim#and them being too up in your face about their identity. he did all this while she/her'ing them constantly#but my man they're trans. nb. not ace.#y'all need to be careful about bad reviews. they're coming from people who are upset about gender identity being handled as a topic in this#game. meanwhile they have no clue what they're even talking about. i don't think matty knows the difference between ace and trans#and neither do the hundreds of people who are one star rating this game currently#i liked this game. it's not top tier. it's not something i'll sink hours and hours and hours of my life into#it has tonal issues and it's moving away from what made dragon age stand out for me#but i do think that it's a genuinely fun play and people who are very invested in dragon age will squeeze joy out of it wherever they can#i had a hard time warming up to the new characters (taash and lucanis being the exception because they have an older bioware air about them#but solas's and varric's story (and don't get me wrong that's what veilguard is about) is GOOD. that is how bioware used to be.#and i wish they'd given us that energy all over the game. that direness. that grit. serious and mature writing.#that consistency is lacking#and whether you're gonna enjoy this game or not is entirely dependant on what you came here for and how well the game delivers on it#i think their weakest points are ironically the thing they advertised the most: the new companions and their writing#you won't find nuanced and good enemies here (i already reblogged something about this. you can go scroll around a bit and catch up on that#really the only thing that had me super invested and emotional was the main quest.#so make of that what you will. ultimately i was more frustrated with the game than i got enjoyment out of it. i was close to just put it#aside for now... until i went to minrathous to end ghila'nain's and elgar'nan's ritual. that all blew me away. still on a high off of it.#anyway yeah that review got cut short by the character limit maybe i'll add more to it tomorrow but rn... i am heading to bed#thanks for coming to my ted talk. also i'm sorry. zevran REALLY isn't in this.#dragon age

I discovered these paintings by James McNeill Whistler recently, Nocturne in Black and Gold: Falling Rocket (top) and Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Firewheel (bottom). I’m sharing them because they make me think of Nevermoor, as so many things do.
With paintings, a nocturne refers to the depiction of night. This is derived from the musical term, where a nocturne refers to a musical piece that is “inspired by, or evocative of, the night.” These both just come from the fact that “nocturne” essentially means “of the night”.
On a basic level, this just reminds me of Nevermoor by the aesthetics. The dreamy nighttime setting strikes me the most, but also the sparks of yellow fire that make me think of Wunder. Think of how many important scenes happen at night- Morrigan on Eventide, the Museum of Stolen Moments, and the Hollowpox in Courage Square. But the concept has me thinking, obviously, about the Wundrous Art of Nocturne. The only songs we know are Morrigan and Squall’s, who both chose nursery rhymes as their Nocture. Their choices make me think of lullabies, sung at night… and there’s lots to think about with that.
#does anyone else see or understand my vision…..#nevermoor#nevermoor in the wild#another post from my drafts cuz I feel bad I have no art to share#only art history classes I actually took was animation history and then ancient and medieval so most of my info or knowledge from#anything later relies on me looking it up and seeing what research and info is online and etc etc etc#anyways. love whenever magic (of the wundrous arts variety) in nevermoor is compared to art or the process of making art. <333#I need to make a Pinterest / some other sort of site where I can share everything visually that reminds me of nevermoor. but also filterabl#and also where I can add notes for why different stuff makes me think of nevermoor or what I associate it with…..#bc I’m often sharing architecture in the discord but I also am always bookmarking clothes and stuff that I don’t share lol#I saw two clocks the other day at a history museum and also an alway thinking abt the Prague astronomical clock so my brain is always like:#‘wow just like the skyfaced clock :) nevermoor :)#circling back if anyone knows some sort of site like Pinterest where you can have bunch of images with notes and also filter between#different attributes pls lmk. I’m not a coder so I can’t think how to make smthn like that myself lol#I started this post like a month ago that’s why I don’t have anything better to say besides ending with ‘much to think about’ lol

i keep thinking back to a quote by some architect who was arguing that the most sustainable architecture is the architecture that doesnt get torn down bc we will be (hopefully) constantly finding newer, cheaper, more efficient, ways of being "sustainable" so trying to make the most sustainable building is a moot point. in 5 years it will be outdated & if all it has going for it is "was once a very sustainable building but isnt anymore" well. that isnt much. the point was that the architect was saying that classical/romantic architecture (often considered very beautiful & worth saving which i could get into but that a whole other thing) is sustainable bc of its beauty. bc of the value we put on it. bc we dont want to erase or tear down things we find beautiful or important. i dont really have an end thought but im just musing on the importance of beauty & how aesthetic value can extend itself into material value & also how beauty (infinite) is hoarded by the rich as if it is a finite source. inch resting
#i feel like this could be a thesis but i dont know enough about anuthing to make it more than a post#the whole othr thing i could get into is how classical/romantic architecre is often held up as the most beautiful style#which is very eurocentric.#but also delegitimizes other reasons for wanting to keep a building around#ie historical importance#im just thinking about the endless capitalistic cycle of creating mass produced soulless buildings#from the catalogue homes from the 50s to the white box condos of now#where they get made & sold as New and Modern and Cutting Edge#and then in a few years (when they arent new or modern or cutting edge no one likes them so they get redone/torn down#and often those renos are ALSO souless and just fit more New and Modern and Cutting Edge appliances/architecture#this creates a lack of conse4rvation of “ugly/cheap/poor” buildings which is. again a whole other thing#also what im saying isnt new. and can be applied to many other aspects of capitalism/comsumerism#anyways

As someone who went to Germany and spent like 70% of the time in churches, Von karma sibling growing up Christian head canons is so fucking personal to me
#ace attorney#von karma siblings#miles edgeworth#franziska von karma#if anyone is curious the reason was i was on a choral music tour with my schools chapel choir#a series of words that i know require so much explaining but take it#german church architecture is fucking bomb though just saying#absolutely stunning#i may dislike almost everything about Christianity in practice but they did go hard with the aesthetic#mvk would be Christian. he just would. he has that christan religious flair#i bet he like talked all the time about how laws come from religion#he like said one prayer about Gregory and thought he was fogiven and in no eay in the wrong#and Miles spent every fucking waking second there thinking he could never be forgiven for murdering his father#he probably becomes an atheist after he moves back to America because he needs that rational explanation for everything#but probably still thought he was damned because the only thing thay can over come Edgeworth's insistance on logic is his self hatred#fran probably had such a fucking complex about being a perfect Christian but it probably gets deconstructed eventually as she recovers#honestly i think its gone by 2-1 probably due to her father being a perfect christian but also a murderer#because she is really chill with channeling#it's probably something she loses when MVK dies

Today I started reading Drown For You thanks to a list of fic recommendations I found by chance, and I just want to tell you that I love your writing and the plot.
I love the gentle but detailed way you describe environments, people and their actions <3
thank you!! ❤️ i find environments and especially people's outifts SO tedious that i have to force myself to and i WILL only describe as little as i can get away with and sometimes i forget to in the first place 🫣 so i'm glad you like it, it makes me really happy!
#i think it's because my english when it comes to clothing items and ...architectural.... things... is not Great#i can proudly say that i know the difference between a button up and a button down (because i've googled a few too many times)#but i Do Not Really Know the correct way to describe what i would call a hallway#because hall is to me the entrance area of a home??#but a hallway is like a corridor at home#but a corridor is like a public building thing? but more so like a school thing?#and also i've never seen anyone use hall but they use hallway#i guess i know a few words but i've never really heard/read/had conversations in english about the stuff so idk whats natural to say#and what isn't#anewhey#THANKS#ask#anon#fic:dfy

For those who wondered what was up with the jackets in this photoshoot.
According to @kyuri0465 on Twitter these jackets are typical Japanese industrial ones.
@Princess0fJapan kindly translated everything for me and explained the following:
- this type of "embroidery is only used for blue collar jobs and food industry for safety."
- Mike's jacket says "Architecture department (建築科) and the 53rd graduating class (53期)
then the student’s family name Ōkubo (大久保)."
- Jonathan's jacket looks like it's "from a ready-made concrete company,
生 means fresh or raw and コン is short for コンクリート which is concrete.
()means limited company.
And lastly a family name which reads Kazama (風間)."
- Jeremy's jacket says exactly the same as Jonathan's
- Mike's from the black and white photo "on the right says Takahashi which is just a family name without a company’s name."
Whether this will have any meaning or not only the album release will show.
#Everything Everything#Mountainhead#I mean more than sure that these are just names of the previous owners of these jackets#but you'll never know with them what can be a hint xD#also concrete company and architecture can make a lot of sense if thinking about the album's concept

It’s a little bit ‘I was the match and you were the rock, maybe we started this fire/We sat apart and watched all we had burn on the pyre,’ and ‘Do you understand that we will never be the same again?’ from Bastille’s The Things We Lost In The Fire
and a little bit:
‘A l’instar de son aîné, Caius Antonius sait se montrer délicieux. Il est cultivé, intelligent, plein d’esprit, gracieux, amiable. Surtout, il appartient à la même génération que Brutus, au même milieu. Depuis le départ de Cassius pour l’Orient, il y à quatre mois, Marcus a vécu avec des hommes dont il pourrait être le père, ou avec les soldats, des bas officiers plus âgés mais qui ne sont pas de son monde.’
and also
‘En juin, Cassius a enlevé Laodicée et définitivement défait les forces de Dolabella. Jugeant les autres à sq propre mesur, le beau Publius Cornelius s'est souvenu de ce qu'il avait fait subir à Trebonius…Cassius passant pour un homme violent et rancunier, pour un ami fidèle aussi, Dolabella s'est dit qu'il allait payer la mort horrible de l'ancien gouverneur.’
Brutus: Assassin par idéal, Anne Berner
actually it’s mostly about how my entire playlist for the road leading up to Philippi (after both Brutus and Cassius leave Rome after the assassination of Caesar) is Bastille’s Bad Blood album on repeat. I want their relationship to get messy. There’s another version of this scene that gets a lot more teeth to the subtext of the conversation, but I wanted to play around with it first before committing to like. room layouts. there was originally a couple of transitional panels before the last 2 because I wanted Brutus to really chew on this thought he has, but augh. stairs. didn’t feel like drawing those.
ko-fi⭐ bsky ⭐ pixiv ⭐ pillowfort ⭐ cohost ⭐ cara.app
#that Brutus bio is not good but it IS very fun if he’s like. your favorite blorbo. if HBO Rome’s wet cat of a Brutus is your man#then this is the book for you#roman republic tag#komiks tag#drawing tag#marcus junius brutus#gaius cassius longinus#The real reason I did this is bc I wanted to scribble some architecture. I need. To treat the setting like a character#but my god do I hate drawing columns#also I think half breakups can be the height of romance. where are my fellow fans of the heirs. you know the break up scene#I’m thinking about. It’s been over ten years and I’m still thinking about them. Love teams want the hold that those two#had on me fr#they do kiss and make up about it later but it’s kind of tragic for Cassius

this honestly isn’t really related to what you asked for at all but the idea of jean moreau in a high school algebra class is so funny to me. that man shouldn’t be in a high school he has Torture in the Labyrinth for 21 years. he should have all the basic knowledge imparted into him already idk. imagine 16 year old jean waking up from the new worst day of his life and he’s still gotta show up to high school spanish after a morning practice (they wouldn’t let him take french bc he was already fluent). it’s just comical really
NO I KNOW RIGHT but they had to have an education....... i do think kevin riko and jean were (canonically?) homeschooled and you can really tell........ but honestly to me when i thought about. and first i need people to know that i am a person with issues and i love older women and yes i know and yes i understand. okay. that being said. when i thought about the fact that when renee was a senior in highschool jean was in 9th grade...... “He didn't want to think about the ramifications of the Fire Nation successfully flying one of those war-balloons over the Lower Ring… The only protection available for those poor people would fall squarely on the shoulders of those new recruits, and they would have to be ready to carry that responsibility. This situation was already a mess and they were still in the planning stages.”
Can’t believe I ignored this last chapter. Good thing Zuko isn’t in one of these meetings or there’d be a fight. Interested to see if this is a redemption for Iroh though to think of the little people or if everyone is just completely fine with the lower ring being burnt to a crisp. Bato clearly has his mind on other things so someone else needs to step up. Jeez
Bato isn’t the only one concerned about this, Suki is also pretty fired up about it in the next chapter… the tension of the upcoming battle gets heavier as we go along.
Unfortunately, there really isn’t much they CAN do to keep the Lower Ring from experiencing casualties…. but how many citizens survive & how bad the destruction is will depend on how many resources they send down there and what their plan of action will be to save lives. (If they even care about saving those lives… many of them being refugees and ‘lower class citizens’)
I am also curious to see if Iroh shows any interest in trying to help the citizens in Lower Ring or if he keeps his focus strictly on keeping the forces from reaching the Upper Ring (where his precious Zuko is)… chaos in the Lower Ring can keep troops from advancing, and there is limited space to flee depending on how Azula advances upon the city… idk. I can’t see it going well, and even Iroh, as powerful as he is doesn’t hold much authority over what the generals do with BSS… He is a tentatively welcomed guest after all. Haha.
we’ll see I guess!! Haha thanks for the ask!!
#Stick a bunch of middle aged military men in the room and see if they give a fuck about the women and children in lower ring#I’m not saying their all like that but I would think the focus would be on destroying the FN before they can advance further into the city#To where the ‘worthy citizens live’#Where the architecture they give a damn about protecting is#Hakoda and bato are the ones thinking of those women and children#Because they know what it’s like to have their women and children killed#& they know what FN soldiers are capable of I mean fuck they stole their water benders and locked them in metal prisons#Hardcore… so yeah I do think iroh is a good guy#But I don’t know if his mind thinks of the little guy… not when he was raised to believe the little guys were only there to for kindling#Idk maybe I don’t give iroh enough credit or I give him too much credit and know just because he loves zuko and wants to be the happy goofy#Fun uncle he needs & not still the dragon of the west who chuckled when he talked about burning BSS to the ground#WE WILL SEE I GUESS haha#We are getting clossseeeerrrrr haha#& we get some iroh time next chapter which is super fun#For everyone but zuko haha#Thanks for the ask anon#Liab#ITF#leaving it all behind#ask

This is a post about light pollution and my absolute hatred of modern architecture and outdoor lighting.
This is not going to be a short post, but I had to get this anger and frustration off of my chest. Writing is the best way I know how to do that.
I have seen a great many stars fall from the sky. Most recently when I was out in the field in front of my house, roughly a month ago, and I was wandering around, listening to Queen on my headphones, and as I looked over towards the road, I saw a star fall from the sky. I stood there for a moment, unmoving, staring up at the part of the sky where I saw that beautiful flash of light as one life ended and it felt as though mine had only recently begun, and I thought to myself how this one was different from others that I had seen. It lasted longer, about two full seconds. I continued walking, a little happy yet also a little sad. How tragic it is, what humans will do to obtain power. They oppress people, they choose the cheapest options to save money that they do not need, and rarely do they seem to think things through. They'll do anything to get the people into their grasp. They will even steal the sky from us.
How fascinated we used to be with the stars, but not anymore, because the night sky looked so much different three hundred, four hundred years ago. People used to be able to look out their windows at night and see the entire galaxy. What do we get? A few specks of light scattered throughout the sky if we're lucky? If it is not a boring, grey abyss? I should not have to drive four days into the middle of the wilderness to see the night sky as it truly is. No one should have to put up with this. I remember, when I was fourteen or thirteen, when they built a big house on the property next to where I lived, with blacked out windows, a basketball court and a swimming pool. The owners were rarely ever there, and when they were, they were terribly obnoxious with their parties and loud music, perhaps not realising how exactly sound manages to travel through that part of the island. And yet, for some reason, they felt the need to install a big floodlight which did not even shine onto their own property, but rather the field in front of my house. It shined directly into my parents window, and so often did I wish I could shoot it with an arrow. Now, my family did not own the property that we lived on. We rented a house there and in the day, the property functioned as a business. I recall the day that they installed a floodlight shining over the small parking lot. I hated it then and I still hate it now. The only reason I did not throw rocks at it until it broke was because I did not want to accidentally set fire to the building, or get evicted. Not to mention, my parents would know that it was I who knocked down the light.
But it was so frustrating, because no one is there at night except for my family and our neighbours (until the landlord kicked them out so that she could use the space as her own personal office), so why should they need a floodlight at all? And why must it stretch so far across the property? I did not live out in the middle of nowhere, as much as it used to feel like it at times. There was plenty forest and farmland surrounding the area, but beyond that was just city and suburbs. It used to feel like the only place where you didn't have to see the ugly architecture of the city, but even it caught up eventually. The house that the obnoxious neighbours built was only one example. In the distant hills, there appeared more lights than there used to be, and when I stood at the top of the hill on the property and looked out over the land, I did not used to be able to see the cranes in the distance constructing five or seven story condos. I used to not have to worry about security cameras watching me. I used to be able to wander around in darkness. I used to be able to see the stars. There were many stars at one point, scattered throughout the night sky. It was not the entire galaxy, but it was still a nice sight. I used to see the stars, and now I get little more than the big dipper constellation. Some nights, I am not sure that I can see anything at all, especially when it is a night where there are more cars passing by than usual, and you cannot even see the road when they pass, because their headlights are so unnecessarily blinding.
The night itself used to have a different colour: orange and yellowish, not horrifically bright, but now it is plagued by sterile white lights. I might like to write a complaint to whichever council, board, or committee is in charge of architecture and construction and suchlike in this city, if only I knew how. But even then, I have little belief that it would make a difference, for I would be only one voice with no one to join me. We are capable of change, I am sure of it, but if only I knew exactly how. If only I knew exactly who were the right people to talk to, how to reach them, and what to say. If only more people knew how, then maybe we could recognise that we are not alone. People don't see the point in trying, for they do not feel like putting in that sort of effort because they do not believe it will make a difference if they as an individual do not participate. But tell me, how many individuals think that? How many of you people believe that your voice does not make a difference? Alone, it might not, but when placed among thousands of others who share that same belief, it makes a huge difference! Imagine what we could achieve if we all stood up together and called for action. Imagine if people realised just how much they are actually capable of, and imagine if they actually took the steps to do that thing.
It is not impossible that I could make a revolutionary change in my country, or my community at least, if I really put my mind to it. If I gathered people together, devised some kind of plan, or used all of my writing capabilities to speak against what I believe the government is doing wrong, it's not unrealistic to say that I could make an impact. Now imagine if an entire city's worth of people did that. Do you know how much is actually possible? Do you know how much could have already happened if we didn't wait until the fate of the world was on the line? If only I knew exactly how. If only I had the resources and information. If only I was more willing to take up more responsibility and actually start trying to do something. Ah, but what might parents say if I told them I needed to be driven to the post office to send a letter addressed to the city council? I'm sure they'd be supportive, but it might be an awkward conversation, especially if they tell me it probably won't do anything. And alas, I am a coward.
Look at this entire post. Look at what I have managed to write on such short notice because I felt like it. Imagine what I could do if I were given the right opportunity. This entire post, and all because I was pissed that I could barely see the northern lights those few months ago when it was the only chance I might ever get, only to be disappointed because of that FUCKING FLOODLIGHT THAT MY BITCH OF A LANDLORD DECIDED TO INSTALL FOR NO FUCKING REASON.
#god i fucking hate my landlord#AND WHY DO PEOPLE THINK FLOODLIGHTS ARE NECESSARY FOR EVERYTHING#IT'S BULLSHIT#if anyone knows how i can write to whichever council board or committee is in charge of this shit in Victoria BC Canada#then please let me know#also the godawful bike paths that you can tell had absolutely no thought put into it#light pollution#led headlights#street lights#urban landscape#cityscape#modern architecture#i hate capitalism#honestly we wouldn't need anymore condos if they made housing more affordable for the average human being who didn't grow up with rich pare#night sky#modern urban design#modern city design#there's one thing i wish they would put more money into and that is#public transportation#public transit#pollution#modern infrastructure

HEYYYY
Someone (me, it's me) just spent 12 straight hours re-drawing floor plans on autocad, FROM MEMORY, of the house I visited this week while working as a trainee (I remembered most measurements and approximated the rest). From 4 pm to 4 am.
Now, that COULD be just a normal thing that happens when I make my own fun.
BUT
I did drink coffee at 4pm, so maybe that was what made me hyperfocused. Typically coffee does not affect me, but I the quantity was substantially more than usual.
It's almost 9 am now.
...
I'm going to do a little experiment.
#i was genuinely having fun and coffee never gave me a energy boost before that is why i need to double check#the real measurements are all a little off (think 7.62 m and 0.34 m) since life is not a technical drawing#so i rounded up what i could to make it make sense (think 7.6 m and 0.35 m)#also i could not find for the life of me two parallel walls in the actual building and it was honestly irksome#so i made sure my personal version of the floor pland had fricking parallel walls where it made sense#once i am back at work on monday i will be able to compare and know how accurate my memory was#but yeah i made floor plans and it was awesome#this is defintely a profession i can see myself doing for years#architecture and engeneering#situations#my life#my blog#my words
