A little wip of something that won't leave my mind.

Cardinal Volpe watched the now married couple. Even though they're surrounded by many of their loved ones, their eyes are trained only on each other. Gabriel was always gripping her hand, and Marie leaned up to kiss his cheek. Cardinal Volpe chuckles at the antics. It would take some time, but he knew Gabriel and Marie were meant for each other.

Behind him, he hears the voice of Death. A voice belonging to someone who was using the body of his long lost Brother. But he had a role to play, and he was a master at his craft.

"A lovely couple they make, huh?" Zobek asks.

Volpe wanted to bristle, but he had forced his body to keep calm, "Yes. They do. Everyone was expecting."

"Awfully strange for the groom's best man to be hiding here." Zobek thought he would be caught off guard. It would take a lot more than this filthy impersonator to do anything to him.

"Gabriel does not need me at the moment." Which was true. Gabriel was still his silent self, but he was smiling more.

Zobek sneered, "well, I guess I am not needed here. I have.... Business to attend to." Before the awful stench of death disappeared.

"Good riddance." The cardinal mutters. He continued to look at Gabriel. He wasn't supposed to be attached. This boy, well, now man, was to carry the world's fate on his back. Volpe had seen it coming for decades now, but wasn't prepared for finding Gabriel as a freezing infant, abandoned in the hands of an Archangel Gabriel statue.

Now this man was like a son to him.

His chest heated up. Not from emotions, no, he lost those centuries ago when he sent his Brothers and Sister to their fates. Now he was going to be sending a lamb for sacrifice. Like Abraham with Isaac. Except, God would see this sacrifice through.

The heat came from the pendant on his chest. Pulling it out, he looked down at the shard of glass. In the mirror image, he saw buildings far larger than he could fathom. Carriages that didn't need horses. Lights, without the fires, lining the sidewalks. And a battle. A battle between the Champion of God, and the Lord of Death. The Champion wins the battle using the Combat Cross to stake the Old man.

Cardinal Volpe let a rare smile come to his lips. Just a little while longer, and then the Lords of Shadow will be no more. Till Satan is destroyed once and for all.

He looks back up at the happy couple, ready to start a new chapter. Cardinal Volpe prays. He prays that Gabriel would be the darkness of the world, and that Marie would be his guiding light. Never to let him stray from his purpose. He prays that Gabriel is strong enough to see his fate through.

Volpe also prays that his son would forgive him for being forced into this role.

Another subject nobody asked my opinion on but I'll give it anyway. I love MDZS, but sometimes it hurts my heart that it turns R+18 all of a sudden, because I need to recommend it to every person in my life for the amazing social commentary.

And JGY is one of those characters that I need a whole team of my nerds to analyse. People like to just dismiss him as evil, but my gents, he was creating positive change for the common people! He cared for the common good!

Don't get me wrong, I'm a WWX bish all the way, and we cannot forget that tiny spot of serial murders committed by JGY, but he is SO interesting. Truly the only character that did not come from a privileged background and was really good at lining up his own interests with what The People needed.

Best novel hands down

The Untamed (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation / Mó Dào Zǔ Shī / MDZS) has one of the best cast of characters. Everyone is important, has an interesting backstory, insane lines and line delivery, and entry scenes. This story was so effing good.

im so obsessed with the idea that mages from different circles all have their own cultures and signature brands of weirdness. like, during the rebellion when apostates started mixing, you could probably tell which circle someone was from just by the words they used when talking about magic or their mannerisms. like a tiny regional accent that only existed inside a single building.
