Before Neil’s parents came and cleared out his side of the room, Todd went through his things, grabbing homework assignments, midsummer night's dream scripts, his favorite green jumper-things that mattered to him.

The trivial items went in a box under Todd’s bed, but Neil’s jumper which still smelled like him despite constant washes, never disappeared from his sight. Todd couldn’t bring himself to wear it, but holding it and breathing in the sweet scent was the only thing that kept him from crying himself sick when he’d wake up in a panic.

And then years later, when Todd fled from Vermont's strictness and went to seize his life in New York, where he could experience real life and true emotions, he still hid the box in a corner of his cramped room.

He still has Neil's things, fragments of his life, hidden in the same little box. And every 15th of December he would open it and go through Neil things again, remembering how this golden boy used to shine with truthfulness and life. The boy who gave him hope and joy and dreams. The smell is gone from Neil's jumper and the assignments are crumbled, but some soothing emotion comes to Todd from the familiarity of it.

And the box would still be there, even years and years later, when his hair was grayish and his face marked by years and time. He would keep it until the day he could finally be reunited with Neil and gave him his jumper back, which now had Todd's smell engraved in it.

All I ask is for a lover I could write letters and poetry to. And watch dead poets society every 15th of December with. And they could be the Neil to my Todd. And we would have little walks around the forest in autumn or run underneath the rain in summer. And we could do romantic shit like going to a bookstore or a café and talk about life. And I would buy them every little thing that makes me think of them. Is that too much to ask??

I'm a fucking romantic, no wonder I don't have any partner. *sigh* I'm gonna watch before sunrise and desperately project myself with both ethan hawke and julie delpy again then.

I think Todd probably got Neil something for Christmas. And maybe it was a Shakespeare book because he knew his father would've given him only medical books as a gift. And he wanted Neil to be happy so bad.

But they never could experience Christmas together, and now this period will always remind Todd of grief and guilt because he did nothing to help his dear friend. And maybe he kept the book he wanted to offer to Neil, and maybe he's reading it every damn Christmas because he feels like he's forgetting more and more about that boy.

That boy who had such an impact on him even if he knew him only for a few months, and Todd knows that he will never be able to thank him. So he reads Shakespeare to remember Neil’s voice because the last time he heard it, that voice was reciting Shakespeare as if it was the only language worthy of being recited.

So from now on, for Todd, Christmas is bitter but also accompanied by theater and acting, so he will never forget that boy with big brown eyes and childish laugh.

Yes Neil is the more social one and protective one, he is the one who goes around asking people directions to places when they have a dayout for Todd but when they cross the road, it is Todd who holds Neil's hand tight so that he does not get hit by a car while he babbles about some Shakespearean play

I think one of the reasons why Dead Poets Society is a movie that touched so many people and will continue to touch them is because it's so utterly accurate.

Everything, even Neil's death, was on point. The way not every student stands up at the end. The way Neil and Charlie don't stand at the end when they're the first ones standing on Keating's desk. The way the school chooses to focus on Keating instead of taking responsibility (because that would mean ruining its reputation, better ruining a young teacher's life than a century-old establishment). The way Charlie is expelled at the end, because he never really was accepted at Welton in the beginning. The way Camron fink, because he was just a boy trying to survive Welton's harsh environment and make his family proud.

The way Todd breaks down after Neil's death even though he knew him for a few months, because Neil had so much impact on him, because Neil was the first person to see him. The way Keating was so appreciated because those students, even the ones not standing at the end, needed a good teacher to show them the joy of life, to make them want to learn, to make them feel like education wasn't only a burden. The way Keating's teacher friend told him to be careful because those students were young and unpredictable.

Keating may have changed these seventeen boys' minds, but of all the students he helped, there is one who died. And this ratio is as hard and painful as it's right.

Everything is so on point in this movie it's actually insane.
