YYH fans are confused about what makes a youkai a youkai especially while living with a secret human double identity in the human world because they do not know much lore about youkai in the first place. There are also different connotations due to its translation as "demon" as well as some parts of the manga not getting animated. But here's the thing: a lot of youkais had human origins in Japanese folklore but they are full youkai and aren't half human. That's because youkai are more like spirits and a spirit could come from a human (Yusuke) or an animal (Kurama) past life amongst other things. Example of this is Kuchisake-onna or slit-mouthed woman that was mentioned in the manga when youkais were starting to live with humanity (unfortunately, that wasn't shown in the anime).

Kurama is a demon fox (youko) but was also called a spirit fox (kitsune) which are actual born foxes that turn youkai after living a hundred years. We don't call Kurama a half animal for being born a fox before turning youkai so why should Kurama or Yusuke be half human half demon?

More about Kuchisake-onna on this link if anyone's curious because I don't want to get distracted by overexplaining one of my favorite folk tales:

Are there actual half youkai or youkai hybrids in YYH? Yes, in the manga there were 2 of them. These half youkai pretended to be Yusuke and Kuwabara in chapter 45 of the manga.

You can assume that these are also just youkai assimilating into the human society like Kurama does based on them being described as having "registered name and citizenship in the human world" but in the manga they are actually textually called half youkai and Kurama wasn't referred to with the same wording nor Yusuke after his atavism.

Also, something about Kurama that had puzzled me in a while is that if he was half human half demon and hybrids are supposed to have both youki and reiki like anime only Yusuke, then why was Kurama never shown using reiki?

The anime is confusing because of 3 things: It doesn't follow everything in the manga and makes up its own lore; It makes a distinction between youki and reiki by different red and blue colorings but isn't really consistent about it; the anime doesn't include the ending of the manga which is unfortunate because the anime is more popular but doesn't do the manga justice.

TLDR: Depending on how much an audience understands youkai and which source they like better (anime or manga), they might experience YYH a little differently and that can make the story confusing.

Bonus: Sensui as Shinobu talking about RPG after beating up Team Urameshi is funny and shows more of himself being innocent and non-malicious like Itsuki described him.

I positively adore the running joke of Idia unknowingly finding Lilia to be the coolest guy ever whenever he doesn't know it's him, like when Silver described his father, or obviously with muscle red. I can't say what'd be funnier, Idia finding out his online best friend is actually Lilia, resident spooky hyper fairy; or them both never finding out, and it'd become even more ridiculous as time goes on. How do you think it'll play out ? You're always so on point

(Also, though it makes sense, I'm still devastated bat boy didn't get a ticket for the Halloween skeleton train : ( does anyone mentions him at some point ? Like how he'd have fit right in with all those Halloween town little freaks, and how he'd have impressed them with his spooks and scared techniques; after all he's been every Briar Valley's children worst fear on Halloween for centuries. I'm on the eng server and I didn't wanna spoil myself by watching the whole thing on youtube)

you and me both, Idia and Lilia being oblivious online BFFs (+ Idia being incredibly intimidated any time Silver brings up his jock gamer dad) is my favorite running joke/subplot. 🤝 it's SO good, to the point where I also am unsure if I actually want it to ever be resolved or not...maybe, like, as a post-canon stinger or something? everyone's standing around covered in overblot ink, and Idia and Lilia's phones go off at the same time...

(legit I do think this is part of why Idia couldn't be present for Lilia's dream, because for some reason Lilia decided he was going to just. embody his past self online. he probably quotes his own battle strategies or whatever in the middle of boss fights. Idia didn't pick up on the whole "oh how weird that we both live on a super remote island" thing, but he would spend thirty seconds listening to General Lilia describing siege warfare and be like "w-wait")

all that aside, however it does end up happening, I do see Lilia being very blasé and all "oh! cool!" about it. y'know, taking it very much in stride! and Idia...very much not.

as for Lilia sadly missing out on Halloweentown shenanigans...he does get one little mention as part of an offhand reference to the light music club, but so far no one has brought up how this basically is just Lost In the Book of Liliatown (Sebek's been too busy yelling about not getting to be in the same group as Malleus). 😔 honestly though, it's probably for the best that he got left out, because he would just settle right in and refuse to ever leave. canon would shatter. we would miss out on all the delightful angst of episode 7 because Lilia is too busy eating poisonous shrubbery inbetween practicing his very best screams, and no one can pull him away from it.

(I can hope for a sequel next year though...)

Annoying pet peeve of endgame is how many people misspell Zenas' Empowering Disc (I can tolerate Zenas but I will not stand for people calling it Zena), but only partly for the typo reason.

The real reason is they don't even know who Morian Zenas is. Like hey that's my niche lore character whose only appearance for years was in lore books and, of all things, the crafting motif books from the base game that also tell an insane story about a love triangle between him and Divayth Fyr of all people competing for the attentions of a woman, until Fyr trapped Zenas in a apocrypha to get rid of the competition.

FLAMING HOT TAKE INCOMING, DISCLAIMER FIRST: punch out is a game with no lore and little to no characterization so it’s natural that different people have different takes on a character and I 10000% respect that and I love seeing how people interpret stuff differently from me!!!!! this is not a dig or a diss this is just personal observation!!!!!!!!!!

i don’t get why the overall fandom consensus is that don flamenco is head over heels in love with the blonde lady [that the fandom calls Carmen (this I do understand why)] in his cinematic trailer. it’s always been apparent to me that this guy is supposed to be like a casanova/serial womanizer/harem enthusiast douchebag kinda guy.

1. country of origin and profession: every enemy character in this game is supposed to be an exaggerated cultural stereotype/caricature, so it’s natural to assume that most of their character traits are not meant to subvert audience expectations, and flamenco is no exception! Spaniards are stereotyped as carelessly romantic, and toreadors seem to be associated with more socially conservative or dare I say, sexist/woman objectifying behavior. it would be logical to presume that flamenco also embodies these traits

2. contender intro slideshow: most people (and I as well) like to use the final slide of his contender intro as evidence of his romantic status. however, I fail to see how it shows him as faithful; on the contrary, the fact that the girls around “Carmen” are a. (for one of them) also wearing roses - the same color as the one he’s giving her, in fact - and b. clearly looking shocked and disgusted seems to show me that those girls were also the object of flamenco’s short-lived affection and that the blonde girl is just his next “target” so to speak.

now how to justify his in-battle voice lines referring to his affection for carmen? well look no further than Carmen, the opera by Bizet, where the titular Carmen ends up being with a toreador (like don flamenco). it could be possible that he uses “Carmen” as a pet name for all of his flings rather than the actual name of his one true love

please feel free to prove me wrong bc I see nobody else with this interpretation and I wanna know why everyone agrees that he’s a faithful boyfriend/malewife lmao

i feel like the north, with all its snowy and honorable knighthood and swordfighting themes did well in having characters like ozeca and zoey as a nod to the contrary (as well as the occasional camo print uniform suit) but IMO, it’s a cop out to simultaneously dilute zoey with 3000 other applesque and knight themes (current diamond arena) and give ozeca -0.8 seconds of screen time but i’m really not here to complain.

i just think that this wouldn’t be an issue if there was inspiration from the right places, because if you want to write a badass military lady you’re at a loss if you allude to everything else but ignore the soul of the contemporary military type, of which i believe to be the usaamerican WTF IS A KILOMETER tactical crayon eater and patriot gun slinger. i’m just saying if the north wants to acknowledge the existence of a modern military lets👏go👏all👏the👏way👏🇺���🇺🇸🇺🇸

something that really frustrates me about Discourse(TM) re: stories in video games is that the vast majority of people who engage in those discussions seem utterly incapable of considering anything besides the literal text of the game and will not acknowledge any meta elements of a game, how it functions as a product, etc.

like i'm seeing people argue about the point of giving majima amnesia in pirate yakuza, and i'm only seeing shit like "it was pointless bc he just ended up remembering anyway", "he wouldn't have gotten as invested in noah if he hadn't lost his memory", etc etc, like. gamers. they gave him amnesia because this game is meant to be an intro to majima for people who picked up the series with y7/y8. y7 in particular did huge numbers and brought in a ton of people who are new to the series. they wanted those people to be able to play the game without being completely lost but also didn't want to try to dump 7 games' worth of majima lore on them to get them up to speed. giving him amnesia and transplanting him to a completely different setting lets them do that, while also letting them slowly reintroduce the parts of majima's backstory that they want new players to know over the course of the game. i'd bet my bottom dollar that his amnesia + hawaii as the setting were among the first things about the game that were decided on for that specific reason, and everything else followed from that. any function/value his amnesia may or may not have had wrt the narrative was entirely secondary.

like im not saying we need to take a super ~academic~ or ~rigorous~ approach to discussing the wacky pirate game, but can we use our brains at least a little bit?

so obviously mike’s fave pokémon is oshawott bc i think he’s very nostalgic about his First Partner Pokémon and although he love all pokémon nothing can beat oshawott. i’ve said at least part of this before but i def think for acswy specifically, gen v (black/white) was mike’s first gen hence why oshawott is his fave, and for will his first gen was gen vi (x/y) — this is what makes to me sense based on when these games came out/when mike and will respectively would be able to access them!! so while will’s first starter was chespin (and he actually loves all of chespin’s evolutions which is why he is better than me) and i do think that there is emotional attachment there i think there are others that he really really likes and always tries to use if they’re available to him!! this also means most of my picks for will’s faves are gen vi and later but it goes without saying he also loves All pokémon. duh.

i think one of his absolute faves is dragalge mostly bc it fucking looks cool and i do think will would love a dragon type as a whimsical fantasy lover 😌 dragalge for everyone’s reference:

i think some of his other faves would be rockruff (bc will byers loves a puppy pokémon and i will die on that hill, not that i need to bc i am right), hatterene and mismagius (the wizardy vibes of it all), armarouge (knight in shining armor 😳), and milotic (i know i just said post gen vi for the most part but milotic transcends generations. bitch.)
